THE MAKING Benjarong ware, a kind of painted porcelain in Thailand literally means 'five colors'. Enamel colors are applied and overglazed, creating a swelling effect over the surface of the piece. The production process is incredibly labor-intensive, as each color is applied individually, and the piece is kiln fired after the application of each color. The firing process brightens the colors of the finished piece and adds to its beauty. Gold is also used in painting the porcelain

THE MAKING Celadon originated in China before being practised in Thailand. The colour & glaze of celadon can be produced mainly in earthenware (and very less in porcelain). After the clay pieces become leather-hard, they are then hand-engraved, carved or painted using intricate designs and motifs and then left to dry again. The unique celadon colour (greenish mint colour) is produced by firing the glaze (containing a little iron oxide) at a very high temperature in a kiln.

THE MAKING The raw materials used are weathered rock and serpentine rock, which according to locals, are available at Longpi alone. After heating over 1200 degrees centigrade for 5-7 hours, the pottery is taken out when still hot and scrubbed with a local leaf known as the machee, giving it a smooth finish and nice shine.

THE MAKING Marble inlay is the method of inlaying coloured marbles or semi-precious stones into a stone base. A single flower design with floral patterns – based on Italian and geometric designs is composed of as many as 40 pieces. Floral patterns are sketched using a pencil then the maker cuts the coloured stone pieces based on the leaf & floral patterns. The coloured stones are then inlayed on the marble with the entire process taking a painstaking week of focussed labor.
