Students used a 3-D printer to create a tiny mailbox for their gingerbread town. (Submitted photo)
Students learn by creating gingerbread village By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Fortville Elementary School fourth-graders crossed curricular lines with the GinEDUCATION gerbread Town of Fortville project. This is the school’s second year participating in the nationwide project, which tasks students with learning about what makes their community thrive and then creating gingerbread replicas of those businesses or organizations. “This is a global STEM project, so it’s classrooms all over the world who you can connect with to do this project,” FES fourth-grade teacher Lydgia Palmer said. The project began in October when the classrooms identified important businesses in the Fortville community. “The fun part is to create their business as a gingerbread house, and that part we decorated after Thanksgiving,” Palmer said. “The next element was we worked with our STEM teacher. One of our science standards is to create working circuits, so we added different lights in the gingerbread town.” Students also worked with FES’s technology coordinator to use a 3-D
printer to create tiny lamp posts and a mailbox for the gingerbread town. “One of the neat things about this program, I think, is there are so many cross-curricular standards covered in this project,” Mt. Vernon Community Schools Community Relations Director Maria Bond said. The gingerbread town is on display at FES, 8414 N. 200 W., through Dec. 18. A poster of the town is on display at the town library, 625 E. Broadway St. The businesses included in the town were invited to the school to see the display. “We had a really good turnout from the community and the kids could meet them and show them their building,” Palmer said. “It was really valuable for those business owners. The kids obviously felt awesome meeting them. Some of these adults really care about what we did, but it also was very valuable for adults to connect with the school. It’s definitely about building community and seeing what’s important in our community.” The final piece of the project will be completed this week when the classrooms Skype with other schools across the nation to learn about those towns and what makes their communities thrive in different ways than Fortville.

Lawrence Police Dept. Chief David Hofmann unveils the new LPD headquarters at 5150 North Post Rd. (Photos by Ben Stout)
Mayor Steve Collier, center, cuts the ribbon to the new police station.
MAYOR FULFILLS GOAL Lawrence gets its first stand-alone police headquarters By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Lawrence Mayor Steve Collier set creating a new COVER STORY Lawrence police headquarters as one of the priorities while running for mayor in 2015. “About six months before I was elected, I had come out of what we were calling our police station on the third floor of the city’s government center, and I remember thinking, ‘We deserve better than this,’” Collier said. Upon election, Collier discussed with Lawrence’s City Controller/Deputy Mayor Jason Fenwick several times about how to get a stand-alone station. “Jason, as always, found a way to work his magic and was able to build this police station, a $12 million facility that resulted in no increase in taxes for residents of the City of Lawrence,” Collier said at the Nov. 22 ribbon cutting. “That’s a pretty amazing accomplishment. We’ve been around for 150 years, and this will be our first stand-alone police station. “It is truly a historic day.” The design phase was during 2016 and 2017. The groundbreaking on the
5150 North Post Rd. site was in July 2018. Garmong Construction Services was the construction manager on the headquarters. “We got started on it as soon as Mayor Collier got elected and took office in January 2016,” LPD Chief David Hofmann said. “It’s a rare ocasion that a chief of police gets a ribbon on a new police station, so we are beaming with pride.” Hofmann was appointed chief by Collier Jan. 1, 2016. Prior to that, he had been with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Dept. since 1997. More than 115 full-time personnel will work in the new building. Hofmann said the former police headquarters had been on the third and fifth floor and basement of the Lawrence Government Center, 9001 E. 59th St. Police cars were stored at a fire station on German Church Road. The traffic enforcement motorcycles were stored at 86th Street and Oaklandon Road, and the Gator golf cars were stored all across the city. “Now we have everything here under one roof,” Hofmann said. Hofmann said he is thankful for Collier and Fenwick’s vision and the progressive thinking of city leaders. The new station is a 37,000-square-
foot building on 4.5 acres. It includes a 911 dispatch center, a K-9 kennel, a fitness center and a 112-seat community room. “They listened carefully way back in 2016 as we described just what we needed,” Hofmann said. “The literally hundreds of hard hat-wearing tradesmen and women brought this facility to
life under the direction and incredible coordination of our project superintendent, Ron Hueston. Ron should be proud of a job not only well done but safely done. There was not one significant worker injury reported on this project, and that’s no accident.”
MOVING TIME Lawrence Police Dept. Chief David Hofmann said the property room was scheduled to move into the new station during the first week of December, involving relocating thousands of pieces of property and evidence. Police officers reported to the new station Dec. 7, with the first official day Dec. 9. “This is not an expense, it’s an investment in our city and encouraging citizens, families, school children, business and civic organizations to make use of this building, but I also encourage them to use it as a way to build their relationships and connect with their Lawrence police officers,” Hofmann
said. “This is a new beginning for our police department to meet the challenges of the future. For many decades, Lawrence Police Dept. officers and public safety partners will be able to work, collaborate and fight crime all within a headquarters building that’s suitable for them.” The Lawrence Police Dept. was established in 1929 during Prohibition. “It probably just consisted of one guy and a revolver looking for bootleggers,” Hofmann said. “Of course, as the city has grown, we have grown to the size we are now.”

ESSAY
LETTER
Insatiable need
Wilson’s ‘commentary’ lacking
Commentary by Terry Anker American pop singer and sister of famed super group siblings The Jackson Five, Janet Jackson — Miss Jackson, if you’re nasty — rewrote and performed the 1986 hit song “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” casting some shade on her ex-husband, singer James DeBarge, and asserting a “strong” counter to what had been widely perceived as a sweet pop persona. At the time, she attributed the mood of the album to be one of self-defense. Whatever the motivation, the song has become, for some, at least, an anthem for demanding one’s due: “You may have been valuable to me in the past, but you need to be valuable to me now. If not, get out.” Perhaps it is inure to the human condition. We love those who seem to love us. OK, but how far can one take the notion? What can we reasonably expect, or even demand, from those with whom we are in relationships? Attention? Time? Physical appearance? Age? Gifts? Acquiescence? Priority? In business, our intentions are drawn up in contracts with end dates, exits and provisions for renegotiation. We do X and Y, they do A and B, and we decide if we still like the deal every 24 months. But, human interactions are more complicated. They rarely come with an end point. They always change, and we routinely fail to be rational. But is our need reasonable or is it entirely insatiable?

Waging war in tinseltown Commentary by Danielle Wilson Today’s the day, friends. The Wilson Tinsel War is about to begin. I’m watching my husband HUMOR Doo prepare our obscenely large Douglas fir for lights, ornaments and, yes, the highly controversial artificial aluminum gorgeousness that is holiday tinsel. See, 2019 is my year to decorate our 12-foot tannenbaum in the tradition of my youth. Luckily for our marriage, most of this Doo also enjoyed growing up. Employing fire-hazard, multi-colored ceramic lights, a hodge-podge of ornaments ranging from Waterford crystal to dry macaroni, we happily agree that the end product should be a gaudy narrative of our lives. Where we differ is the literal icing on the cake, and by that phrase I mean fake icicles on a tree. I grew up with a butt-load of tinsel covering every single reachable bough; he did not. And so for the past 20 years, in order to avoid copious
amounts of therapy, we have agreed on alternating. In 2018, I silently endured a naked conifer, sad and dark without that silvery ‘wow’ factor. This December, it’s Doo’s turn to suck it up. The problem is, he’s not quite as accepting of a Danielle Christmas as I am of a Doo one. And, he’s indoctrinated our sons into his stupid way of thinking. Luckily, I have the girls on my side, and the aforementioned boy children are still away at college. Hopefully, this means the Tinsel War will be less Antietam and more Treaty of Paris. Time will tell. I am waiting until the last possible moment to remind him, with photographic evidence, if necessary, that this is a tinsel year. Let the war begin! Peace out.

Editor, Current in Noblesville has been delivered to our mailbox for several years, as we have been a resident here since 1977. The contents for a periodical to serve a constituency should include news items, government information, editorials for subjects of interest to the constituency, entertainment notifications, local advertisements and other notices of interest to the constituency. The commentary by Danielle Wilson is lacking in redeemable quality due to the caustic comments about family and others being the crux of her “commentary.” Commentary consists of explanation, interpretation or illustration of legitimate subject matter, and this so-called commentary does none of this. Comedy and light-hearted articles are refreshing from time to time, but one’s personal ridiculous accounts of their life and criticism of others different from her is not commentary. This story began several years ago when the UPS truck pulled up to the curb at our house HUMOR and we wondered what Brown was going to do for us. We saw the driver struggle with a huge carton the size of a bigscreen TV. He maneuvered it to the front porch and left it leaning against the door. I went outside to look at it. “Who’s it for?” Mary Ellen asked. I checked the label and it was addressed to me, but those stickers can be misleading. Some of our credit cards are in my name, some are in Mary Ellen’s, so when a delivery is made, we are not sure who ordered it and who the gift is ultimately for. If the wrong person opens it, well, there goes the surprise meant for Christmas morning. “It says it’s for me,” I told her, “but I have absolutely no recollection of ordering anything so big. “No.” “Is it artwork?” “No, not even close. But I don’t want to play anymore. If you guess it, I’ll have nothing to look forward to on Christmas morning. I want to see the expression on your face when I open it.” Later that morning, when Mary Ellen went out grocery shopping, I opened the box. It was a really neat present. I’ve never been happier with something I bought my wife. Before Mary Ellen got home, I resealed it, then gift-wrapped it and placed it under the tree. Of course, now we both know what is in the package. It will still be a surprise on Christmas morning - as long as we can both keep a secret.

ordered it, Mary Ellen.” My wife thought for a moment, and so began the weirdest conversation in our 40-year marriage. “Dick, I know what it is. It’s that special item I mentioned two months ago that I wanted for Christmas. You said you found it in a catalog. Don’t you remember? I am so excited! Thank you.” “I have absolutely no idea what it is. Can you give me a hint?” “No, I can’t give you a hint. That would ruin the surprise.” “Ruin the surprise? The gift is for you! It’s supposed to be your surprise. But you already know what it is. I’m the one who doesn’t have a clue.” “It doesn’t seem right to tell you. That’s not in keeping with the spirit of giving, Dick.” It was driving me crazy that I had no memory of what I bought her. “Is it a high-tech item?” I asked. “Not really,” she said. “Do you plug it in?”

HSE grad, ex-Straight No Chaser member releases Christmas album By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com For Ryan Ahlwardt, performing comes naturally. Since elementary school, he has taken to MUSIC the stage, but it was during his time as a student at Hamilton Southeastern High School that he became immersed in choir. With an impressive résumé and a background of performing worldwide with a cappella group Straight No Chaser, Ahlwardt has recorded a new Christmas album, “Indiana Ryan Ahlwardt Christmas.” Released last month, “Indiana Christmas” is filled with Ahlwardt’s versions and rearrangements of famous Christmas songs. The title track is an original written by Dan Ponce, founder of Straight No Chaser. Ponce wrote the song in 2008 for the group’s first Christmas album. “I got Dan’s blessing to record the song for my first solo Christmas album and named the entire project after the song,” Ahlwardt said. “Having called Indiana home for 27 years, I knew ‘Indiana Christmas’ was the perfect name for the album. I wanted the album to sound like how Indiana has always felt to me – home.” The album has 13 songs. Ahlwardt said his favorites, aside from “Indiana Christmas,” are “Hallelujah/O Holy Night” and a modernized version of “Auld Lang Syne,” which he co-wrote with Noblesville-based producer Matt Mellinger. As a senior at HSE in 1999, Ahlwardt auditioned for the then-Indiana University-based Straight No Chaser with a few of his choir

friends. He earned a spot in the group that would gain worldwide attention in December 2007 when a member of the group uploaded a video of their performance of “The 12 Days of Christmas” to an up-andcoming website, YouTube. The video became the most shared video of 2007 and caught the attention of Craig Kallman, CEO of Atlantic Records, who quickly signed the group to the label. “Our first album on Atlantic Records hit No. 1 on iTunes and has sold over 3 million copies to date,” Ahlwardt said. “As part of the professional group from 2008 to 2012, I was able to record an additional five albums, appear on two national PBS specials and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, perform on such iconic stages as the Royal Albert Hall in London, Hollywood Bowl in LA, and the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, and collaborate with such artists as Sara Bareilles, Barry Manilow, Take 6, Phil Collins and Stevie Wonder, to name a few.”
Ahlwardt left the group in 2012 to return to Fishers and lead the local chapter of Young Life, an outreach ministry for teenagers. He served in that position until 2018. Since then, he has worked as a full-time artist and vocalist, expanding his horizons to voice acting, working on projects for the Indianapolis Zoo, the state of Indiana and Eli Lilly. His voice also may be familiar to listeners of “Radio Theology,” a weekly show he co-hosts Sunday mornings on 99.5 WZPL. “Being a creative entrepreneur and small business owner in Fishers gives me the opportunity to provide for my family in one of the safest and most vibrant communities in America,” Ahlwardt said. “My personal and creative roots are here in Indiana, and I’m eager to see what the future holds for our family and the city and state we love to call home.” “Indiana Christmas” is available on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and other streaming services and also is available on CD at ryansongs.com.
MEET RYAN AHLWARDT Ahlwardt lives in Fishers with his wife, Lauren, and their two children, Olivia, 5, and Gus, 2. Olivia is featured on “Indiana Christmas” on the song “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” Lauren sings a duet on “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” The two met while singing a cappella at IU. They regularly perform at weddings, parties and corporate events with their seven-piece ’90s cover band, Mixtape. Ahlwardt graduated from HSE in 1999 and from IU in 2003. He attends Mercy Road Church in Carmel.

Still light on their feet By Rick Morwick rick@youarecurrent.com When Lori Mansell-Solinksi retired from teaching at age 70, she didn’t retire from ENTERTAINMENT life. Instead, she learned to tap dance and joined a dance troupe. A few years later, she created one of her own. Today, at age 90, she’s still tapping away. A Fishers resident, Mansell-Solinski is a founding member of Prime Time Follies of Carmel, a group of eight senior-age performers who entertain residents in senior living facilities in Carmel. The group features singers, dancers, a keyboard player and a soloist. “I moved to Indiana from California in 2003 after tap dancing in groups such as the Hot Flashes, and I wanted to start a group of volunteers to go out to senior facilities to ‘give back’ without charging for entertainment,” said Mansell-Solinski, who moved to Fishers two years ago with her husband, Ed Solinski, 87, who also is part of the

But in light of health challenges for some of the performers (the youngest is 67, the eldest is 92), the group now only performs at Carmel facilities Besides Mansell-Solinksi and her husband, the Prime Time Follies volunteers are Bonnie Kincaid, 92; Meredith Bovin, 67; Joyce Washburn, 87; Sandy Fortier, 69; Charles Alloy, 86; and Kathy Doyle, 71.

December is here, and I’ve got three delicious and versatile sparklers to suggest. While WINEderlust I have your attention, I’d also like to point out that bubbles should be enjoyed often and not reserved for special occasions. They are such a delicious addition to any meal, and at so many price points, there is no reason to skimp. • Here’s your party wine: Pizzolato Fields Prosecco Spumante, $14ish. Juicy but elegant with bright green apple, lemon and a bit of hazelnut. Nice and bubbly, and great as a starter or with food. • Your sweetish choice: Banfi Rosa Regale, approximately $17. This is a unique red sparkler made from Brachetto D’acqui. Subtle pink bubbles that smell like roses but taste like rasp-
berries and strawberries. If you are looking for a wine to go with chocolate dessert, you’ve found it. Balanced and soft but not too sweet. • The splurge: $40 Heidsieck Monopole Blue Top Brut. Toasty and buttery, with rich and heady flavors of white fruit. From one of the oldest houses in the Champagne region of France. Made of pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay grapes, this “blanc de noirs” is always a crowd-pleaser. Got a favorite that you think I should know about? Blueprint for Improvement: New hearth warms old Indy loft Commentary by Larry Greene
Before
After
THE CHALLENGE This loft is in the Old Northside neighborhood of Indianapolis. Built in 1901, the building originally housed the Indianapolis Power & Light Co. The living room featured built-in cabinets and an electric fireplace that didn’t have much style. The owners wanted an update and a more modern feel to complement other updates around the home.

DECEMBER 26,27,28 DECEMBER 21,21, 26,27,28 JANUARY JANUARY 2-42-4
THE SOLUTION 1. A sleek electric fireplace with remote control access is decorative and functional. It’s installed above the floor for a better view from the sofas. 2. The hearth is constructed from quartz and runs the length of the wall and frames the fireplace. 3. The hearth features a wide overhang to add depth and mimics the sleek bulkhead above. 4. Floating walnut shelves with invisible mounting hardware replaced the dated built-in shelving. 5. The owners now have a beautiful and functional focal point in their living area. Larry Greene is the owner of Case Design/Remodeling; email him at lgreene@caseindy.com. Visit caseindy.com for more remodeling inspiration and advice.
