Wright Brothers member scores hit in songwriting contest
Carmel residents John McDonell and Tim Wright sandwich Tom Wright, while being flanked by Brian Chrisman and Keith Clayhorn.
By Lauren Burdick Current in Carmel Carmel musician Tim Wright is chasing stardom with a cause. Wright plays guitar, pedal-steel guitar and banjo in the Wright Brothers Band, and recently won a songwriting contest for the Drive 4 Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease organization.
CarmelFest staples Wright Brothers to serve as grand marshals of parade The beauty of Carmel-living is easy to see for longtime resident John McDowell. John Mc Dowell: "Carmel has always been a big part of the Wright Brothers."
Part of the community
The music men “The people of Carmel have really wrapped their arms around us and supported us,” McDowell said of the band’s selection as parade grand marshals.”
Wright said that the exposure garnered from winning the contest and performing at the CMA Festival was priceless for his career as a musician and for the Wright Brothers in general. “It was a great connection for me as a country musician,” Wright said. “Hopefully it will open up a few doors, perhaps even for the Wright Brothers.”
When the band formed in 1971 as the Wright Brothers Overland Stage Company, Carmel was the site of many of its first shows. McDowell joined the band in 1975 and, after leaving briefly, returned in 1984.
As to why the band has been invited back year after year, McDowell pointed to their family appeal. “I think Carmel knows that they’ll get quality family entertainment (with us),” he said.
According to McDowell, the Wright Brothers’ frequent shows in Carmel over the years, including an opportunity to perform in the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts, has forged a special bond between the musicians and the city.
The video of Wright’s song is viewable at the Drive 4 COPD website, drive4copd. com.
This year, the will have a Main Stage show on July 3 (7:30 p.m.), and McDowell, Wright and his older brother, Tom Wright, will be performing there with the Carmel Symphony Orchestra on July 4 (8:30 p.m.), including a special rendition of Jimmy Buffett’s “The Night I Painted the Sky.” A visitor that edged into the CSO’s rehearsal with the trio Wednesday night at Carmel High School said the performance will be “breathtaking.”
“This is a crazy business, the music business,” Wright said.“The business is such that you just never know. All you can do is throw out what you do and hope that somebody likes it enough to buy it or come to hear you. It’s not easy, and there’s a lot of great musicians and singers out there.”
“Carmel has always been a big part of the Wright Brothers and their career,” McDowell said. “And the Palladium show we did was one of the top five nights we’ve ever had together.” McDowell said all the shows over the years have also given him just a bit of local fame. “People know who I am, I guess, especially friends and people who have followed the band for almost 40 years,” he said. “I love living in Carmel. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”
2
Through the songwriting contest, Wright said he discovered the importance of COPD awareness and how easily diseases like emphysema and chronic bronchitis can be contracted. “A lot of people don’t even know they have (COPD). There’s 24 million Americans that are probably affected by this. If you’ve smoked even just three packs of cigarettes in your life, you can be affected by this,” Wright said.
“I thought it was quite an honor, myself,” McDowell said. “I think this is our 10th year in a row to play CarmelFest. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
“I live in Carmel. One of my daughters, who sings in the band, lives in Carmel. Most of our band members are (Carmel) residents. My wife has an art gallery in the Arts & Design District,” said Tim Wright, who plays guitar, pedalsteel guitar and banjo for the band. “Carmel has probably been our biggest supporter over the years anywhere we’ve played in the United States or Indiana … we’re part of the community.”
Wright’s hit took him on the road to Nashville, Tenn., where he had the opportunity to perform his song at the Country Music Association Festival. “Every country entertainer in the world is there for that four day period, and I got to perform on stage with Billy Ray Cyrus and Jim Belushi,” Wright said.
By Lauren Burdick Current in Carmel
A vocalist and bass player for the Wright Brothers Band, McDowell was selected this year, along with eponymous band mates, brothers Tom and Tim Wright, as one of the grand marshals for the St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana Fourth of July Parade at CarmelFest.
Wright found reality in some big dreams when he submitted his song, “Just as Long as I can Breathe,” for the organization’s fundraising and awareness event. As the winner of this contest, Wright’s song will serve as the anthem for the organization over the next year.
Beyond CarmelFest, McDowell said he hopes to put out another CD with the band, featuring music from a show they did in French Lick, as well as continuing to do shows around Carmel and Central Indiana. The band also is playing the Minnesota State Fair later this summer. More information on the Wright Brothers can be found at wrightbrothersband.com.
Apart from the positive media attention, Wright said he hopes the song and Drive 4 COPD can make the lives of Americans easier. “We just want to raise awareness of (COPD),” he said, “so if people have it they can start taking care of it at an earlier age and it won’t affect them as badly later on.”

Letter to the community, Welcome to CarmelFest, one of the largest celebrations of the year in Carmel. St.Vincent is proud to be part of this community and participate in this family-focused event. This year, St.Vincent will be involved in the CarmelFest celebration in many ways: • Be certain to stop by the KidZone, sponsored by Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St.Vincent where the K-IDs BMV will be providing free and valuable identification cards for your children. • You may notice many St.Vincent associates walking in the Parade. We will also be providing first aid at stations throughout the parade route. • The St.Vincent Carmel Hospital Emergency Department will be providing safety education, helping you keep yourself and your family safe. • And look for information on our new maternity suites, set to open mid-July at our Carmel Hospital • St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana will also be at the festival, provid-
ing education about heart disease. St.Vincent Carmel Hospital has been serving the medical needs of the Carmel community since 1985. Through the years, we have grown to provide the services that this community demands. For example, we are in the process of renovating our maternity area to provide luxurious maternity suites, complete with rain showers, WiFi and other amenities that you told us you preferred. In addition, we understand that your time is valuable, so our Emergency Department is streamlined to see patients quickly – usually in less than 20 minutes. Our extensive list of physicians include leaders in the field in areas such as Bariatrics, Orthopedics, Ob/Gyn and primary care. And as part of St.Vincent, you can be assured that we will treat you compassionately. I invite you to enjoy the CarmelFest celebration. Sincerely, Michael D. Two days to remember and celebrate COMMENTARY By Gary Frey
It is only two days out of each year, but the significance and impact of CarmelFest in our community is huge. For two days we raise the flag, sing patriotic songs, honor our fallen and our living, celebrate our heritage and our future, and enjoy the coming together of our unique community. All across our nation this year, Americans young and old alike will be focused on those great qualities that make our nation the home of the brave and the land of the free. For that we are “Proud to be an American.” Carmel is one of the most blessed cities in the United States. The vision of our civic and community leaders has been to create an environment that sustains the American premise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We are a true melting pot of Americana, with the highest of standards, and the loftiest of goals. We have much to be proud of and still much to accomplish, but our goal at CarmelFest each year is to provide an opportunity for our citizens to revel for a moment or two in those things that make the United States of America,
In addition to the parade, our entertainment line-up and fireworks this year may just be the best we have ever put together. Two main stages featuring performances by The Wright Brothers, Barometer Soup, three time CMA winner Mac McAnally, along with the likes of Bleu Django, The Renegades, The Tides, The Echos, Jes Richmond Band, Orquesta Bravo, capped off by the best fireworks around.
FREY
and Carmel, the greatest places to live in the world. As is our tradition each year here in Carmel, we will celebrate our community through one of our best parades ever. Each year the CarmelFest parade has grown in scope and quality. This year, 116 units, including our grand marshals, The Wright Brothers, floats, clowns, celebrities and dignitaries, military personnel, both past and present, and a fly-over by the Indiana Air Guard in A-10s will entertain you and move you. We all owe St.Vincent Health a special “thank you” for sponsoring the parade.
Finally, thank you to my marvelous committee. There are more than 60 faithful volunteers on the CarmelFest committee who spend hundreds of hours each putting together the best festival here in Indiana each year. I am humbled by their dedication and their creativity. If you see one of them walking around in a yellow CarmelFest golf shirt, say “thank you” (Oh, and hug a Trash Trooper while you’re at it). Thank you all for attending and supporting us. You are the reason we do this. Gary Frey is the CarmelFest 2010 chairman. You may reach him at info@currentincarmel. com.

when ''the lights come on and the stage is set,'' and what exactly is it? “I think it was Martin Luther, who said that there is nothing more religious than a man God put here to be a farmer, to farm. When I play with or without the lights or the stage, I feel like I’m doing what I was put here to do. Not that I think I’m all that great, you understand. I’m just trying to answer my calling.”
A conversation with country music legend Mac McAnally
With marketing and business demands on your time, do you ever think, as some do, Man, I just want to make a record? “I say with all modesty that
I’m possibly the worst businessman I’ve ever known. I think music first and second and third and then remember business and marketing. But I do have a lot of appreciation for those on the business and marketing side of things who are as passionate about their job as I am about mine.”
Most of us see iTunes as a positive, but it has had a negative effect on some musicians, or so it is said. Where do you stand on that issue? “I feel like

eigning three-time Country Music Association Musician of the Year Mac McAnally will be the North Stage headliner on Monday at CarmelFest 2011. His free show will begin at 8 p.m. McAnally, may be better known around these parts as “Music Man” in Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band, but his solo performances pack a particular wallop and incredible energy. Alternating between guitar and keyboards, his distinctive, rich voice and other-worldly command of the instruments are unmistakable. Others will recognize him for the music he has written for fellow artists’ recordings, including Kenny Chesney, who landed a major hit with “Back Where I Come From” and Buffett, who has made hay through the years with “The City” and “It’s My Job,” among many others. McAnally, an inductee into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame, also has written for Hank Williams, Jr., Reba McEntire, T.G. Sheppard, David Allan Coe, Shenandoah, Ricky Van Shelton, Charley Pride, Randy Travis and Noblesville native Steve Wariner, among others who have availed themselves of his songwriting prowess.
What’s the best part of being Mac? “The best part of being Mac is
definitely the circle of friends, family, fellow musicians and music fans that I am surrounded with. I don’t know how I wound up in this position, but there is no more grateful guy anywhere. I’m truly blessed.”
All the travel, the planes, the hotels does it ever become a grind or is it' more a way of life to which you've adapted through the years? “It’s interesting to anyone who’s known me for a while, because I’m someone who is always content wherever I may be, so I’m not transient by nature. That

As a studio musician, he has worked with Buffett, Williams Jr., Travis Tritt, Linda Ronstadt, Roy Orbison, Mary Chapin Carpenter and many others. McAnally also has produced a number of albums – his and others’ – including several for Buffett. His Facebook page lists him as “also a producer, session player, publisher, band member, studio owner, comic, story teller, and so on, a basic modern day William Faulkner living in the music industry.” Current vice president and general manager Steve Greenberg caught up with McAnally before a recent show he did with Buffett outside Boston. Time allowed for a round of “15 Questions.”
being said, I love being led around the world by music and friends particularly friends with airplanes. I can honestly say I’ve never been bored and I don’t know whether that relates to my ‘interesting’ life or my low threshold for entertainment.”
What motivates you as a musician and a songwriter? “The desire to do
my best. I have always wanted my work to represent the best I can do. And then as it continues, I want to get better. When you’ve lucked out and done something that succeeded on some level, getting better is no easy task. But I love trying, and I doubt I’ll ever stop.”
Of what are you most proud thus far in your career? “My dreams starting
out were pretty modest. I wanted to be a guitar player in a band and I wanted to write songs. So I’ve been in the ‘bonus round’ almost from the beginning. But among my hits and awards and amazing memories, what I’m most proud of would be the relationships that have grown from the work. I love being ‘of use,’ as my mother used to say, and the fact that my work has been of use to so many fine folks and the fact that I’m still here is hard to believe. I’m a fortunate fellow.”
a dinosaur sometimes, but a dinosaur with an iPhone. I love iTunes for several reasons. I like being able to get hardto-get recordings immediately when they float across my consciousness. I remember going to every record store within driving range looking often in vain for ‘that’ song. I enjoyed the dedication of that pursuit and I enjoy the instant gratification available these days. I’ve been overpaid and underpaid and not paid for my labors as a musician, and I anticipate more of the same in my life. But I can’t judge the present against the past or the future. I can only appreciate that music remains important to people all over the world.”
What story from the road is something to which everyone can relate? "There’s hundreds at this point
that run together. I enjoy rediscovering them in dinner conversations and my shows, but basically I’m drawing a blank for you right now. I’ll get one ready for the show on the Fourth.”
Do you have an all-time favorite show? Where was it? With whom or solo? Why? “A couple years
ago, I went with Jimmy Buffett to Dubai and played for the U.S. Navy (personnel) aboard the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier. The patriotism combined with the surrealism of Dubai made for an all-time memory.”
In 25 words or less, how would you characterize your friendship with Jimmy Buffett? “I can do it in way
less: Exactly right. Wouldn’t change a thing.”
Do you still get a certain thrill Continued on next page -->

Mac McAnally - another night, another award.
What can the crowd at CarmelFest expect from your solo performance? Any teasers? "Well, anyone there
ABOUT MAC
can expect to see a lucky guy with a decent voice and a fairly good heart and a really fine guitar doing his very best.”
A word for those coming to see you here? "I’m looking forward to it, and
I hope at the end of the day you go home happy and entertained and thinking about what’s important in our life.”
What’s next? “A lobster roll in Boston and then trying to finish this song that’s been tormenting me for about a week.” What do you hope will be your legacy? “Three beautiful daughters and a pile of songs that represent the best I could do.”
Finish this sentence: In my next life “In my next life I probably will have to pay a penalty for how many blessings I’ve had in this one. But if so, that’s still a great deal for me.” The North Stage area at CarmelFest 2011 provides a limited number of tables and chairs, so attendees may wish to bring lawn chairs. Hint: Stake your claim early, as McAnally is expected to draw a sizeable crowd. There will be an adjacent Sun King beer garden, as well, and an area where McAnally will sell and autograph his CDs for concertgoers.

CarmelFest Freedom Run looks to expand By Lauren Burdick Current in Carmel For the fifth year in a row, Saturday's CarmelFest Freedom Run/Walk has worked to promote the health of Carmel residents young and old with its multi-layered approach to fitness. The 4.5-mile run/walk is accompanied by a 1.5-mile loop designed for families and a “pee-wee” run for kids only. According to race director Don Carr, this approach to the event encourages families to stay fit from day one, not just in adulthood. “We’re just trying to have that ability to bring the whole family in, so it’s a family-fun event. Obviously, if we get the kids out running earlier to learn a little bit about fitness they feel like a part of it,” Carr said. “It makes it fun for the family to come out.”
do some other things just to help get the word out more. It certainly has potential to grow more,,” Carr said. In the past, Carr and his team marketed the event through postcards and mailings to residents, as well as using banners around Carmel. In coming years, Carr said he is looking to expand the event to 1,500 or 2,000 participants. “We just need to look at some other ways to get the word out even more next year,” Carr said. According to Carr, regardless of its size, the CarmelFest Freedom Run/Walk represents an important aspect of CarmelFest.
While for the past few years the Freedom Run/Walk has garnered about 800 to 1,000 participants, Carr is hopeful to expand that number in upcoming years through effective marketing techniques.
“I think it adds a nice fitness component to the community. People can get out and exercise, which is important these days with all the emphasis on health and fitness,” Carr said. “I think it’s a good component to CarmelFest because it is a participant-friendly event that you can get out and do as opposed to spectator events.”
“I’d like to see it grow, and I think maybe that’s something we have to do from our part. We have to do a little better job marketing the event. Maybe next year even we need to probably
The CarmelFest Freedom Run/Walk takes place July 2 beginning at Carmel High School. Participants can pre-register at tuxbro.com by June 29 for $20 or the day of the event for $25.

Project 9/11 Indianapolis I-Beams coming to CarmelFest By Jordan Fischer Current in Carmel
Begun in early 2010 by Greg Hess, a City of Indianapolis firefighter and paramedic, as a grass roots effort to establish a permanent memorial dedicated to those killed in the collapse of the World Trade Center, Project 9/11 Indianapolis has been gaining momentum steadily.
With the assistance of a semi provided by Sodrel Trucking, Hess will be displaying the two beams at CarmelFest this year. A Carmel resident himself, his connection to the festival stretches back years to when his mother was a member of the festival committee. The beams will also be a part of the St.Vincent HealthFourth of July Parade at Carmelfest.
Hess was a member of Indiana Task Force 1, one of the first FEMA search and rescue teams to arrive at Ground Zero after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The task force spent eight days in New York assisting in the rescue and recovery efforts. In 2010, Hess petitioned the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to obtain two steel beams from the World Trade Center. After months of Photo by Jordan Fischer effort, the City of Indianapolis was The World Trade Center I-Beams have been on granted possession of two 22-foot display around the state since Hess brought steel beams, which will become the them to Indy. CarmelFest Has Talent winners release first albums
By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel
Blake and Christina Cardenás are taking the next steps in their musical careers. The Carmel siblings took home top honors in their respective age groups at CarmelFest Has Talent in 2009 and 2010. They won’t be competing in the contest again this year but will again be singing at the annual festival. This time, however, they will be performing songs from their respective debut albums. The two are students of Carmel performer and voice coach Blair Clark, who recorded a first original album of his own last summer with Preston Glass, a successful music producer and songwriter in Los Angeles. When Clark went to L.A. to record with Glass, he put in a good word for two of his most promising students, and it got the producer’s attention. “He (Glass) said I really like what you guys have and what you can do, and I’d really like to do something,” Blake said. “He’s worked with huge names in the past – Aretha Franklin, Kenny G, Earth, Wind & Fire, Whitney Houston… We’re living here in Carmel, Indiana working with a guy who’s that big.” Glass worked with the two separately, writing songs that represent the singers’ respective interests and personalities. In the fall, Christina, a Brebeuf Jesuit senior, hit the studio to begin recording. Blake, a student at DePaul University, recorded his album second in both Los Angeles and Chicago. “We’re both very happy and proud of how our albums turned out,” Blake said. “But this is just the beginning for us.”

The two said their albums do not fit in any one genre, as they created songs using a variety of styles including soul, R&B and more upbeat club songs, among others. Blake, who simply goes by his first name as a performer, and Christina, who goes by the stage name La Tina, are now working to promote their respective albums – “Born Ready” and “Center of Attraction.” “Basically we’re trying to get a local buzz and get people in Carmel and Indianapolis really interested in our music,” Christina said. “You can’t start big. You have to start small.” Blake and La Tina will be performing 45-minute shows on both Sunday and Monday at CarmelFest. They will perform, individually and in duets, songs from their albums, which are available online at CDbaby.com, Amazon.com, napster.com and others.
Enhanced KidZone to premiere at CarmelFest By Courtney Stiehl Current in Carmel
After enormous popularity in previous years, CarmelFest’s newly-dubbed Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent KidZone will feature improved attractions to celebrate the 4th of July holiday. Topping the list of those new features are 10 over-thetop inflatables, and the “Gyro” spinning ride. Peter Primason, co-chair for the KidZone, says it will also serve a greater range of ages. He said for the first time, adults will be able to use the inflatables, which will include a waterfilled inflatable with pedal boats. According to Primason, the colorful attractions become, “very exciting in the (CarmelFest) atmosphere.” Tickets cost 50 cents apiece, with the rides’ cost ranging from 3-14 tickets. Proceeds benefit local charities. Free features include stage performances,
