New rules, rates, CRC oversight

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com

In its first meeting of the year, the Carmel City Council — complete with several new councilors that ran on the same slate during last year’s city council election — immediately passed several new ordinances. New councilors Bruce Kimball, Laura Campbell and Jeff Worrell were endorsed by Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard and replaced former councilors Rick Sharp, Luci Snyder and Eric Seidensticker, all of whom often disagreed with Brainard on financial issues. The only councilor that remains that wasn’t endorsed by Brainard is Councilor Carol Schleif, who joined the others on several unanimous votes. The council passed an ordinance that allows the council president to table a new ordinance instead of automatically sending it to committee. The council can now also decide to suspend the rules and vote on an ordinance on first reading with only a two-thirds vote instead of needing a unanimous vote to make that happen. The council also approved a change to when the council agenda will be submitted and released to the general public. Council meeting agendas will now be submitted 10 calendar days before the meeting instead of six business days.

Dispatches

The council voted unanimously and immediately to raise the city’s water rates, which Utilities Director John Duffy said will help the city’s budget in wetter seasons when water bills are lower. It will raise Carmel’s combined average monthly bill for water, sanitary sewer and stormwater from $55.79 each month to $65.89 each month. The proposal also states the rate will automatically rise with inflation, so it won’t need council approval in later years. The council voted to ease its oversight of the Carmel Redevelopment Commission after the previous city council voted to tighten restrictions on the government organization. The CRC also no longer has to submit a bi-annual written report to the city council. The council was unable to get enough votes to immediately get rid of the process that allows Carmel residents to opt-out of city trash services with Republic Services. Until the previous ordinance about suspending the rules is signed, it had to be unanimous, and two councilors — Campbell and Schleif — voted against immediate action, so it’s been held over to the next meeting. Councilors in favor said this will reduce traffic on the roads and improve public safety. Several residents spoke against it, saying maneuvering the large trashcans can be difficult, so they chose other services. More coverage: Page 5 and currentincarmel.com.

Stop sign at 126th and Auman removed By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com

Before the Carmel City Council meeting even began Jan. 4, there was a sign at 126th Street and Auman Drive transportation saying that the muchdebated stop sign there would soon be removed. At the first meeting of the year, the newly elected council made it official. The council approved the removal of the stop sign after the first reading of the ordinance. The vote came after 10:30 p.m. after many Carmel residents in attendance had already left the meeting. The new ordinance allows Carmel’s city engineer to decide which stop signs can be removed without council approval. The 126th and Auman Drive stop sign has drawn the ire of motorists having to stop during rush hour. Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard has

previously said that very few people exit the nearby residential neighborhood compared to the amount of east-west traffic on 126th Street, so the stop sign wasn’t necessary. The proposed removal of the stop sign led many to speak out at meetings during the past year, even local basketball legend Bobby “Slick”

Leonard, but the previous council did not have enough votes to make it happen. Many newly elected members had publicly stated their support for removing the sign, so it was widely expected to be removed once the new council took office. Councilor Kevin “Woody” Rider asked that the city council be notified in the future about any stop sign removals so there isn’t a tug-of-war between the city engineer and the council, who could vote to put it back where it was. Brainard said a previous city council stripped the city engineer of the authority to remove stop signs. Under the law, the council could still vote to override the engineer’s decision, but it requires unanimous support. “I’m not going to second-guess my accountant when he tells me how to report my income taxes,” Brainard said, using the analogy to show why he believes the city engineer should be trusted.

Carmel becomes second-class city By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com Within a few minutes of the first meeting of the year, the Carmel City Council voted unanimously to turn Carmel city council into a second-class city. A heavily debated issue in the mayoral and council elections in May, this means that Carmel will, in four years, replace its elected clerk-treasurer position with a mayoral-appointed city financial advisor and an elected city clerk. It would also increase the size of the city council from seven to nine members with one more council district and one more at-large seat in four years. Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard advocated in favor of this change during his election in May. Challenger Rick Sharp opposed the move because he said an elected clerk treasurer provided a watch-dog role and he worried that the mayor could appoint a “yes man.” Brainard won his sixth term — and six of the seven councilors he supported also won — and so he felt comfortable moving forward immediately at the very first meeting. The council suspended the rules, voted on and passed this issue once it was introduced.

The mayor suggested that he and the council sign the ordinance immediately after the vote instead of waiting until the end of the meeting so it could take effect immediately. By immediately enacting the ordinance, this allowed the city council president to preside over council meetings instead of the mayor. The previous rules called for the mayor to preside over and lead each meeting, but the council had been unaware of this provision and meetings had been led by the council president. Longtime city councilor Ron Carter, who was elected the same year as Brainard, was unanimously selected as council president without any challenger. Later in the meeting, it was unanimously decided without debate to allow the city council the ability to give the council president higher pay than the rest of the council, in essence a bonus for the position’s extra work. That amount would be decided on an annual basis, and the council president cannot serve in that role two years in a row. Outgoing council president Rick Sharp spoke out against this move at the previous meeting, saying he thought there isn’t as much extra work for the position to necessitate extra pay.

Smith shares love of songs, dogs By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Sandi Smith grew up wanting to be a mom, veterinarian and a musician. “That was my childhood music dream,” Smith said. “I got a D in zoology so, go figure; I knew I was going to do well in that (veterinary school). But I’ve always loved dogs.” Smith, 50, is able to combine her love of dogs and music to bring joy into the lives of senior citizens. Smith, who has been singing and playing guitar since she was 7 years old, started performing with her dogs five years ago. The Carmel resident primarily plays at retirement homes and assisted living centers. Casper, 11, is a Maltese. Roscoe, 5, and Gus, 1, are Multipoos, a mixed breed of Maltese and toy or miniature poodle. “Gus will go for one-month training on Jan. 4 to be officially an emotional therapy animal,” Smith said. Roscoe has previously gone through the training. “My son, Spencer, is autistic, and that gave me the whole idea of getting them trained for therapy, because when my son is with the dog he gets calmer,” Smith said.

Smith performs many songs from the Songbook era. “You are my Sunshine” is a favorite of the seniors, she said. Smith, a 1983 North Central High School graduate, studied music at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., graduating in 1988. While Smith gets paid to perform, it’s more a labor of love. “The entertainment fund that the assisted living centers have is not huge, and I’m not there to break their bank,” she said. “It helps me with the dogs’ grooming and the gas. I’m very inexpensive.”

Nurse retires after 47 years By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com After nearly 47 years at St.Vincent, Elaine Phemister just felt it was time to retire. However, that achievement doesn’t mean it was an easy decision. “It’s kind of bittersweet,” Phemister said on Dec. 31, her final day. “I’ve worked with some of these girls for over 30 years. They become part of your family.” She said she will miss the job as well. “I tell people that 50 years ago I made the right decision to become a nurse, because I have truly enjoyed it,” Phemister said. “I will miss the patients and their families.” She graduated from the St.Vincent School of Nursing like her late mother, Mary Margaret Bradley, had before her. Phemister, 67, started at the St.Vincent Hospital on Fall Creek Parkway in Indianapolis. St.Vincent Indianapolis moved to its new location at 86th Street in Indianapolis. She then started at St.Vincent Carmel when it opened in 1985. In recent years, she has been working in the outpatient surgery area. Phemister’s fellow nurses say they will miss her greatly. “She’s dedicated, and she’s selfless,” An-

Carmel non-profit working to raise money to build Guatemalan school By Renee Larr • news@currentincarmel.com A chance meeting during a family trip to Florida changed Quinn Shepherd’s life, and he’s hoping it will do the same for hundreds of children living in poverty. cover story Shepherd is the co-founder of Wisdom & Grace Ministries, a Carmel-based nonprofit organization working to build a new school large enough for 1,000 students in Santo Tomás Milpas Altas, Guatemala. The inspiration to help students in another country was sparked when Shepherd, a Carmel resident and managing partner with Shepherd Insurance, met Rudi Pineda at a dinner party while visiting his father-in-law, who had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Pineda, from Guatemala, was the guest of a family friend who was a missionary to the Central American country. “I tried to start a conversation by asking him what he did for a living,” Shepherd said. “(The missionary), who is fluent in Spanish, was translating. She said Rudi is a teacher. Three and a half hours later over dinner, we just couldn’t believe the story we heard about Rudi starting a school from scratch.” Pineda founded his school, Colegio Cristiano Saber y Gracia (Wisdom & Grace Christian School), in 1986. He had just finished his education and felt compelled to teach and decided to build his own school, brick by brick, farming the land to make ends meet, Shepherd said. “He had two or three students the first year, and they had no text books,” Shepherd said. “He would find math problems within the Bible, so he would teach grammar, spelling and history throughout all this biblical context. That became his textbook for several years before they could build up enough in reserves to buy textbooks.” Pineda’s education extends beyond his students to their parents. “The parents have to meet with Rudi every other Saturday where he teaches about sobriety, co-dependence, your commitment to your child and what that looks like,” Shepherd said. After hearing about Pineda’s efforts to end the cycle of poverty in Guatemala, Shepherd decided to see it with his own eyes. A small group of his acquaintances accompanied him on the trip to the impoverished third-world country in 2013. Another group is planning a trip at the end of January. “We just had an amazing experience, and saw what this man, Rudi, was doing. We felt with the people we know, and our small group at church, we could really help them out,” said Justin Steill of Westfield, a co-founder of Wisdom & Grace Ministries. Once they saw Pineda’s school firsthand, Wisdom & Grace Ministries was born. The group began with small ambitions of raising money. Its goal was to raise $5,000 and to sponsor three students. They ended up raising $50,000 and sponsoring 100 students. The group feels Pineda’s vision is the driving force behind their success. “We’ve not really been the ones driving it,” Shepherd said. “If you meet Rudi, you’re forever impacted. I’ve met a lot of great

leaders. He’s the single greatest leader I’ve ever met. He’s 100 percent committed to his students.” Now the group is looking to take the next step and raise $1.5 million to fund a school building that can fit 1,000 students. The

current building is large enough for 350 students. “All it takes is doing a little on the side, and you can help impact a lot of different people,” Steill said. For more, or to get involved, visit wisdomandgrace.org.

FR O M   T HE B A C K SH O P So much for the big rally Things have been pretty darned good in our communities for most of us since the recession withered away. Still, we’ve believed all along that the market would “correct” itself in the not-too-distant future, although do not look to us for financial advice. Now comes the news that Richard Fisher, the former head of the Fed in Dallas, spilled his guts on CNBC recently. In a follow-up report by zerohedge. com, we learn market volatility and comments about China driving such wasn’t the case. “It is not China. … What The Fed did, and I was part of it, was front-load an enormous rally market rally in order to create a wealth effect ... and an uncomfortable digestive period is likely now.” Simply incredible. ••• We’ve waxed here more than once about how out of touch the youth/young adults of America are. While not ours, this observation of young liberal America seems right on point. “America’s colleges have always been teeming with Marxist professors and 18-year-olds who don’t know how to do their own laundry, but do know how the world should be run, but they’ve now become havens for the world’s most easily offended people,” according to townhall.com. In 2015, they brought us new terms, including micro-aggression, cultural appropriation and safe spaces, among others. Commentator Mark Steyn might have had the best response of all: “The shrill, little twerps shrieking, ‘You can’t say that!,’ are a far bigger problem than the stuff they object to.” ••• In observance of Martin Luther King Day on Jan. 18, a Monday, the post office will be closed. As such, Current will be delivered to your mailbox on Jan. 16. Brian Kelly, publisher, and Steve Greenberg, general manager, are co-owners of Current Publishing, LLC. Our fuzzles, our tinglers Commentary by Terry Anker Now, to paraphrase the great Dr. Seuss, that we’ve packed up “our presents, our ribbons, our wrappings, our snoof and our fuzzles, our tinglers and trappings,” we turn ourselves back to the more normal operations. During the dark, cold days of winter, the sparkle and good cheer help raise our spirits. In fact, the spirits help raise our spirits, too. Americans drink more alcoholic beverages from December through March – average blood alcohol content per person increases by nearly 50 percent. But we can take comfort that the long nights and lazy days have passed as the sun rises a bit earlier and stays a tad longer. Likewise, holiday vacations and year-end bonuses have come and most likely gone. We now look to the coming warmer weather to indicate the emergence of spring and a new season. So for today we pass the time obsessed with political candidates and fleeting primary battles. The partisan parties triangulate and reposition with the emergence of rising

and falling poll numbers. The contenders work furiously in a clumsy ballet of words and half-truths to distinguish themselves from each other and from their expected opponents would they advance to the general election in November. If framed as mutual warriors working to improve the lives of we many Americans, they are friends. If framed as political antagonists (or worse) of the various idiots and scallywags deemed to be scraping for national attention, then, they are enemies. Are we served better by a process of conflict or one of cooperation? Is our nation better attended by a high contrast of ideas or explicit attempts at reconciliation? Maybe the shorter days during the darker months aren’t the only reason for raising a frosty beer; we’re just tired of the conflict! Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. Q U O T E  O F  T HE  W EE K The mere fact of being able to call your job your passion is success in my eyes. – Alicia Vikander

Well, it finally happened. That stressinduced meltdown I knew was lurking behind the twinkle lights, cheese humor plates and vacuumed-up tinsel emerged this morning. Read on, my friends, for a tale of going postal. The Saturday started off fine. At 10:30 a.m. I dropped my youngest at dance and then drove straight to Kinko’s with my oldest for a passport photo. After waiting in line for-ev-er, we got his picture and headed over to the Carmel post office. Unfortunately, their passport counter was closed, with no signs indicating hours of operation. So we stood in line. Again. Seven minutes later, I learn it’s by appointment only, made by phone only. Fine. On the way home, I call the exact same post office in which I’d just been standing. Passports are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Not exactly convenient for people who have jobs. The nice man did suggest I try a different post office, which I did. As I am pulling in to my driveway, I discover that if we can be in line at the Fishers PO by 12:30 p.m., we can get the application processed today. Woohoo! Back across town we go. We arrive at noon, but soon realize that we are missing a key component: a paper copy of his driver’s license. There are still three people in front of us, so I dash back to the van and head to another Kinko’s. I make two wrong turns and get stuck behind an accident clean-up, but eventually get the damn copy and return to PO No. 2. At precisely 12:35 p.m., we are called. We hand over his application, photo, driver’s license and copy, social security card and expired passport, as well as my driver’s license. “Birth certificate?” the lady asks. Huh? “Ma’am, we need proof of his citizenship.” “But we have his old passport,” I say. “Doesn’t count. Good day. Next!” And just like that, we are dismissed. No passport, no nothin’. I was in full sob mode even before we exited the building, and I cried the entire way home. Stupid holidays. And stupid post offices. Peace out.

Grumpy new man! Commentary by Dick Wolfsie My wife told me the other day that my New Year’s resolution for 2016 should be to stop being so negative and grouchy. humor But my humor columns are dependent on those very qualities. I’ve made a career out of people mistaking my crankiness for wittiness. I once protested to a couple of Girl Scouts that their cookies were too high in fat and that eating Samoas would shoot my lipids through the roof. Their mothers called and thanked me, saying this was a good health lesson for 9-year-olds. They must not have known I bought six boxes. I complained about my neighbors’ unkempt lawns and their putting garbage out at the curb two days before trash pick-up. I whined about kids making a ruckus shooting hoops in their driveways on Sunday mornings. Instead of being annoyed, they made me president of the homeowners association. I’m optimistic about 2016. I’ve already put together my top 10 list of stuff that makes me grumpy 1. I don’t want the clerk to keep asking me if I have a Speedy Rewards Card. I don’t.

I don’t want my wife asking me when I’m driving if I know where I’m going. I don’t. 9. And finally, number 10, just to show you that I don’t end everything on a negative note… 10. I don’t want someone on the phone asking if I mind holding. I DO!

Young Carmel actor Wray takes on ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Mitchell Wray likes being busy, but this schedule was hectic for even the 10-year-old Carmel resident. theater Fresh from completing his run as Michael Banks in the Civic Theatre’s production of “Mary Poppins” on Jan. 2, Mitchell began rehearsals for his role as Dill in the Indiana Repertory Theatre’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” a few days later. The performances will begin Jan. 29 and run through Feb. 28 on the OneAmerica Mainstage. “It gets tiring,” Mitchell said. “Sometimes I wish I had a break, but it’s fun.” It’s Mitchell’s choice to keep busy. “We kept asking him if he was sure he wanted to do back-to-back shows,” his mother, Chauncie Wray, said. His mother said her son plans take a break after “To Kill a Mockingbird.” There might be some auditions, but it will be for shows later in the year. “I also like rock climbing, so I’ll do some of that afterwards,” Mitchell said. For now, Mitchell is concentrating on what he describes as a challenging role. “He’s a troublemaker,” Mitchell said of Dill. “He does a lot of things he shouldn’t be doing. He’s like Scout’s sidekick. They do a lot of trouble-making stuff together. They’re very adventurous. They’re very curious about things.” Mitchell said there are some similarities between this role and Michael Banks. “I loved that, just like Dill, Michael is a troublemaker,” Mitchell said. “In the beginning, they are spoiled rotten, and they turn into the

Mitchell also was thrilled he got to fly on stage. “That was on top of my bucket list, so check,” said Mitchell, who wore a harness under his jacket and shirt. His mother said he sings while he is up in the air. Mitchell appeared in his first movie “Cross-

roads of America,” which is now in post production. He also appeared in a short documentary about the Reynolds Farm Light Display. Mitchell is joined in the “To Kill a Mockingbird” cast by another Carmel youngster. Grayson Molin, 13, will play Jem Finch. Grayson began acting when he was 5 years old. “It’s one of my new favorites,” Grayson said of the play. “I hadn’t read the book before. But when I got asked to do the role, I watched the old movie version of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ and I really liked it.”

Grayson performed as Henry Cratchit in “A Christmas Carol” and Jonas in “The Giver” in IRT productions last season. This season he performed as Ghost of Christmas Past and Peter Cratchit. “We’re delighted to have Mitchell and Grayson with us in ‘Mockingbird.’ They’ve both played lead roles on IRT stages, so they are old pros,” said Janet Allen, IRT artistic director. “But the opportunity for them to take on the literary classic roles of Dill and Jem in ‘Mockingbird’ will hopefully be as much of a delight for them as it will be for our audiences.” For more, visit irtlive.com

Uncertainty guaranteed in ‘Doubt’

Our 2016 Season Will Be Even More Magical!

By Zach Dunkin • news@currentincarmel.com When the curtain closes on “Doubt, A Parable” the audience exits without ever seeing the story’s alleged victim or theater even if there, indeed, was one. Did Father Flynn commit sexual misconduct in a private meeting with a student? Or is Sister Aloysius’ suspicion a result of her deep mistrust toward her students, fellow teachers and society in general? The audience is left to decide. And it is up to Trevor Fanning to generate that air of uncertainty as he portrays the parish priest in question. John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play runs Feb. 5 through 14 at the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre. “It’s an important and challenging task to create characters and situations which don’t reveal an outcome of guilt or innocence,” said Fanning, who will be making his Civic acting debut. “Part of my task in creating this character will be maintaining a sense of uncertainty.” “I think the powerful script, and the intimate way that our director (Jennifer Alexander) and the production team will present this play, will have a great impact on Civic

Carmel man launches Alair franchise By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Terry Blake knew it was time to get back into the housing business. Blake business had been working for Custom Concrete Construction for more than 10 years but decided to leave the housing industry during the Knoderer economic downturn in 2009. “I wanted a career change and to get completely away from construction at that time,” Blake said. “I see the time changing back, and construction is something that I have always loved. This gives me the opportunity to get back in with both feet.” Blake, a long-time Carmel resident, has started an Alair Homes franchise for custom homes with an operational area in Carmel and southern Hamilton Co. Blake and Brian Knoderer, a Fishers resident, are co-owners of the operational state development agreement with Alair Homes. Alair Homes was founded in 2006 with 67 outlets in operation. There are many locations in Canada and some in the Phoenix area and one in Ohio. Blake is managing partner of the

construction unit. “Brian’s aspect will be working with development of other contractors that will come into the business,” Blake said. “I will be doing most of the training and oversight. What got my attention on Alair was the fact that when I was building homes back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the industry was Blake behind the times on technology. Everyone was just getting used to computers. The technology had gone way ahead of what the business operations of most builders were. When I first became aware of Alair the first thing that really, really got my attention was their program of taking a client through the actual steps of the business process. They have complete oversight over the entire project. They see every single expense that I see. It’s opens up a lot more clarity over what most builders are going to do. We go through a very in-depth design and estimate process.” Blake will introduce Alair Homes at the Indianapolis Home Show at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on Jan. 22 to 31. Sabrina Wernicke laughs that she’s “not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination.” When she went out in new biz Carmel, she found there aren’t a lot of places to go after 9 p.m. unless you want to sit in a bar. That’s one of the reasons she opened The Quirky Feather Confectionery with her older sister Heidi. It’s a late-night coffee shop and bakery with homemade macaroons, petit fours, mini-trifles and custom cookies made to order. It’s open noon to midnight, Monday through Sunday at 890 E. 116th Street, Suite 125. “There isn’t anywhere else to go get a latenight sweet and coffee or tea, and we felt strongly that there should be,” Sabrina said. “For example, we wanted to offer a place for people attending events at the Palladium to go before or after the show.” Wernicke said the idea was to create a feel where there are lots of arm chairs and comfortable seating so customers can lounge instead of being rushed in and out. “We went for a sort of Alice in Wonderland

We have a lending library. We want both introverts and extroverts to be comfortable here.” Heidi and Sabrina wanted to open a bakery together since they were children. They teamed up with a friend, Stefani Lucas, who they met at pastry school. Matthew Wilson and Alph Bingham help fix things, clean and do everything except for baking. Adding color to your kitchen cabinets Commentary by David Decker Colorful cabinets are back in style and one of the most popular design trends. Don’t get us wrong, classic home interior white cabinets are still very popular and something clients frequently request. However, colorful hues in the kitchen are popping up more and more. Bright cabinets can really brighten up the space of your kitchen and can transform otherwise dated cabinetry. Even just a painted island can liven up a space and add a new look to your kitchen. Black cabinets are a color option that adds a serious look of sophistication. We’ve seen black gain popularity recently, especially in modern homes. These cabinets usually bring a glossy, formal finish to the room and compliment almost any other accent color. Another popular interior color, gray, is also becoming more common on cabinets. Less traditional than white but also a neutral option, gray still allows for easy decorating and is available in a large variety of shades. Another color to consider for cabinets is blue. This is a great option when looking to add a nautical or cottage feeling to your home. The list of blue hues available is end-

less and choosing one for the upper cabinets and a different for the lower cabinets can add interest you may not have had before. Whatever your style, make your selection carefully. Colors especially seem to come in and out of style quickly, which makes it a little difficult to select a timeless look that features a lot of color. If you are choosing to implement colorful cabinets, you will want to make sure that it does not overpower the

Berlin’s Allied Museum collects and displays items from 1948 to 1990, when the city was divided between east and west. travel The museum’s most fascinating item reflects western espionage activities during the Cold War. The Allied Museum occupies the building and land of the U.S. Army’s “outpost” movie theater, used to entertain troops stationed in Berlin’s American sector until the troops left in 1994. Located outside the main building are a number of large items from Berlin’s divided past, including an American guardhouse from Checkpoint Charlie, a British Hastings TG 503 airplane used during the Berlin airlift in 1948 and 1949 and a French railway car. A small section of the Berlin Wall stands in front of a concrete watch tower once used by East German border guards. Inside the museum are exhibits from Berlin’s Cold War history, including a display remembering President John Kennedy’s trip to West Berlin in 1963, when he famously declared: “Ich bin ein Berliner” (“I am a Berliner.”). The museum’s largest enclosed exhibit is

a 22-foot long tube, about six feet in diameter. The metal tube once formed part of a 1,500-foot-long tunnel built by the American CIA and the British SIS in 1953 and 1954. The tunnel originated in the American sector of Berlin and extended east about 1,000 feet underground into the Soviet sector, intersecting 1,200 buried telephone lines. Beginning in 1955, American and British intelligence operatives intercepted more than 440,000 telephone conversations involving the Soviet military. The interceptions stopped when Soviet intelligence discovered the tunnel in April 1956, creating an international controversy. The refurbished tunnel section now in the Allied Museum came from the western segment, excavated in 1997. Remains of the eastern segment of the tunnel, discovered in a German forest about 100 miles from Berlin in 2012, are stored in a museum warehouse.
