By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel In a matter of days, Carmel resident Jo Ann Brezette will travel to Germany for an encounter that, until recently, she thought would never happen. Brezette spent 30 years searching for her half brother. She learned of this additional sibling, conceived during World War II, after her father’s death in the mid-70s. Working with little to no accurate information, Brezette spent decades searching diligently for this additional branch on her family tree but never found answers. Battling illness, Brezette was ready to accept that this brother would always remain unknown to her, when a chance e-mail changed her luck. She found her half-brother, and this week she’ll go overseas to meet him for the first time. “It’s all I can think about since I found him,” Brezette said. “There isn’t a day that goes by now that I don’t think about or e-mail him.” Her father, Robert Paul Brezette, served in the Big Red One, First Infantry during WWII. Before coming back to the United States and later marrying, he fathered a child with a woman in Germany – but likely never knew it. A few years after Robert’s death in 1969, a German man came to Indianapolis searching for Robert, claiming to be his son. However, he went to the home of Brezette’s brother, Robert, Jr. Unable to discuss the situation at the time, Robert, Jr. invited the man to return later, but he was neither seen nor heard from again. Brezette herself didn’t learn of the encounter

visual confirmation Jo Ann Brezette’s siblings said the German man who came to Indianapolis in the 1970s was a “spitting image” of their father (left). The man turned out to be their half brother, Volker Paul (right), and Brezette said the only picture she has of Paul looks exactly like those taken of her father late in his life.

until a few years later when her siblings mentioned their “German brother who was a spitting image” of their father. Soon after, she began her long search for this mysterious half sibling. But for years she was looking for the wrong

coincidence. No matter which breaks Brezette got in her investigation, the wrong name would prevent her from locating Paul. In 1998, Brezette’s mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and Brezette herself began experiencing significant health problems, including the loss of most of her sight. After suffering a stroke a couple years ago, she was ready to give up hope. “I just came to the conclusion at that point that I was never going to find out,” she said. But in 2008, there was a breakthrough in her search. At the request of his younger son, Paul began e-mailing anyone he could find with last name Brezette, again hoping to find more information about his father. One such e-mail came to Brezette’s home computer, and she said her “heart dropped.” She recalled her reply to his request for assistance. “Dear Paul, I think I can help you,” she said. “I’m your sister, and I’ve been looking for you for 30 years.” After years of searching for her half-brother, Brezette’s unknown sibling actually found her and did so by accident. Afraid that he would intrude in the Brezettes’ lives, Paul said he stopped inquiring about his father after learning of his death. Robert died when Brezette was just 14, and that, combined with her interest in family history, is what she said drove her to continue searching for Paul despite so much difficulty. “Maybe I felt that there was something missing,” she said. “Maybe that’s why I had this desire to keep us all together.”

OUR VIEWS

It is our position that the Carmel Police Department is acting in a prudent and thoughtful way in conducting its investigation into recent allegations of hazing in Carmel Clay Schools. Carmel Police Chief Mike Fogarty continues to urge our fellow citizens to allow the process to continue and to withhold prejudice until all facts have been accumulated and vetted. We concur. Filling the blogs with hate and name-calling, many outside of our community have taken great joy in the harm that has befallen our hometown. And all the while, many of us demand action – now! In the frenzy, allegations of cover-ups and conspiracies are bound to emerge. We believe in the Carmel police. And we believe if anything is being protected jealously by city leaders, it is the innocent. However, city, police and school leadership must remember that the obligation to protect the innocent does not extend to the guilty. If negligence, bad action or disregard contributed to the alleged harm perpetrated upon on youth, those responsible must be exposed and held accountable for their actions in accord with their adult or juvenile status. But for now, we are patient. Our thoughts are with the victims. And justice will be forthcoming.

Deficit voting

It is our position that the State of Indiana generally and our legislature specifically must act in response to falling revenue. The state has undershot its tax collection forecast for the past 17 months, including this past month. Leaders in the Indiana Senate have undertaken to pass a collection of resolutions aimed at making our budget balance. While no one wants to spend less, we believe it would be irresponsible to take any other action. With business already suffering tremendously from the current recession and concern over coming months (including potential for significant tax increases or continued malaise in the economy), government must continue to make its expenses match it earnings. The Senate bills have passed and are now awaiting corresponding passage from the Indiana House of Representatives. There, Speaker Pat Bauer can choose to act and bring the bill to the floor for a vote – or he can simply shelve the proposals and let the State spend more than it makes. While the folly of such action seems apparent to most taxpayers, it nevertheless routinely eludes the thinking of many government officials. Senate bills 1, 35, 236 and 98 deserve a vote. And we should demand it.

The how and the why COMMENTARY By Terry Anker This month has been a tough one for the Carmel High School boys’ basketball team, coaches, and school administration, and for local police and, frankly, anyone who cares about kids. Regardless of the outcome of what will no doubt be a long and thorough investigation, many lives have been irreversibly altered (and not in a good way) by the alleged activities. Even as haters both far and near seem to take great joy in the pain suffered in Carmel, the community is asking (rightly) how something like this could happen. Many have speculated that the bad behavior manifested itself in the form of a particularly unpleasant act of sexual deviance. The lynch mobs are forming. How did the administration let this happen? How did the coaches let this happen? How did the police let this happen? Sadly, there will likely be plenty of blame to go around. But in the meantime, shouldn’t we withhold judgment until the investigation is resolved? For now, it strikes me that the question

for our community should be why this kind of deviant behavior is taking place, not how it is occurring mechanically. These kinds of crimes are rampant across the nation. And while schools are reacting to a wave of sexually charged bullying, shouldn’t we explore the reasons behind the delinquency? How is it that these young people (both boys and girls) believe such action is ever OK? Moreover, even if one predator was at large, how is it that the other kids don’t simply know a serious line has been crossed? Our youth are inundated with images that are beyond tolerable. Teen comedies routinely call forced male sodomy humor. The Internet delivers every manner of perversion to the everwaiting iPhone. Isn’t it possible (or likely) there is a connection? Why, why, why were we advertising the Palladium on the Olympics now?

Who put what in Mort’s morning cereal? This, to us, was shocking news. Mortimer Zuckerman, The Last of the Great Liberals™ and top editor at U.S. News & World Report, recently wrote something that nearly knocked us from our ergonomically correct chairs. Listen to this: “(President Barack) Obama’s ability to connect with voters is what launched him. But what has surprised me is how he has failed to connect with the voters since he’s been in office. He’s had so much overexposure. You have to be selective. He was doing five Sunday shows. How many press conferences? And now people stop listening to him. … He’s lost his audience. He has not rallied public opinion. He has plunged in the polls more than any other public figure since we’ve been using polls. He’s done everything wrong. Well, not everything, but the major things… I don’t consider it a triumph. I consider it a disaster.” Huh. Where might you have read that before? We’re still reeling from it. Really. It was quite a surprise. ••• We’re sure you heard about the recent incident at John F. Kennedy Airport where an air-traffic controller allowed his son to deliver a few routine messages to pilots. The controller and his supervisor were suspended. Which

Brian Kelly & Steve Greenberg begs the question: Just what does it take to get fired from a federal, unionized, job? ••• The story regarding the purported potential criminal behavior of three Carmel High School senior boys’ basketball players unfortunately continues to spur rumors. And we’ve received multiple unsolicited comments about that, some included in a copy of a vitriol-laced letter sent to administrators and coaches by “concerned parents.” It wasn’t signed and there was no contact information, no return address. The writers must have been too embarrassed to expose their identities. It was spleen-venting at its finest, and other than that we didn’t note a purpose that had not been previously addressed.

READERS’ views

Editor: We are writing in reference to the article “Performing Arts Center: Olympic ads good value” by Kevin Kane, published in the Feb. 23 issue of Current in Carmel. Many Carmel residents were appalled when they first saw the Carmel Palladium advertised on television during the Olympics. What is there to advertise right now besides the name? The building isn’t completed, and from what we have read, it isn’t even fully funded. There is not a solid opening date. There are no performances to advertise at this time. Even if the ads purchased to advertise the Palladium were a good value for the price paid, that doesn’t mean it is worthwhile to spend this money in this way at this time. Everyone we have spoken to is dumbfounded that this venue is being advertised now for an undisclosed amount of money. If there isn’t enough money to complete the building right now, who is paying for this marketing campaign? We can’t even tell who’s in charge. The City Council, Carmel Redevelopment Commission,

From the backshop

and Performing Arts Foundation all are quoted within a few sentences of each other in your article. Some members of the City Council and the Carmel Redevelopment Commission overlap, and city employees sit on the board of the Performing Arts Foundation. Taxpayer money has been turned over to the Foundation, but there is a lack of transparency about how the money is being spent. Taxpaying citizens of Carmel deserve to be informed about the way their tax dollars are spent. Although the Foundation’s nonprofit status may not require it to disclose this information or justify its actions, or to ask for input from Carmel taxpayers, it ought to be doing that without any prompting. Since the Foundation is using taxpayer dollars, it ought to be considering how to spend them wisely. Advertising the Palladium now, though it will not open for a year, does not seem very wise. Commentary By Danielle Wilson You know what I’ve decided? A.D.D. makes me M.A.D., mad! Both in an angry sense and in a mentally crazy way. Why? Because attention deficit disorder really screws people up, and if you don’t have the patience or means to deal with it, A.D.D. can seriously tax relationships. My husband and one of my sisters have it, as does the child of good friends of ours. All our lives would just be so much easier if A.D.D. didn’t exist. And I get so irritated with those who think it’s not a real disorder, that A.D.D. is just a label pharmaceutical companies invented so they can make millions from selling Adderall, Focalin and Strattera. Clearly, these disbelievers haven’t had to work around a loved one who can’t seem to get anything done on time or, at the other extreme, gets so involved with a project he forgets about everything (and everyone) else. Take my husband. He’s never been officially diagnosed, but it’s quite clear to me and his family he suffers from A.D.D. As a child, he struggled in school and stirred up trouble. In college, he often missed deadlines and left tasks incomplete. As an adult, he’s learned to make lists and to

self-medicate with caffeine and now enjoys a successful career. But he still drives me bonkers, like when I ask him repeatedly to plow the driveway and days later it’s still not finished, though the garage is spit-spot clean because on the way to the shovel, he became distracted by the leaf-strewn floor. Then there’s my younger sister. I never thought much about her having A.D.D., but when I look back on her childhood, the signs were all there. She too struggled in school, even though my parents held her back a year, and she frequently had trouble focusing on homework. Christina probably had the hyperactivity component too, as she was always in motion, whether it was bouncing off the basement walls or competing in gymnastics or cross country. Over the past several years, she has become increasingly frustrated at her inability to read a book and has opted for medication. She can now read chapters at a time without losing interest or focus. But she’s also 32. Think of all that time she suffered for nothing, believing she was lacking in some way. The worst scenario, though, is parents dealing with a child who has A.D.D. Our friends’ preschooler suffers from A.D.H.D., and because she also has some learning disabilities, her disorder is preventing her

from benefiting from therapy. (She can’t sit still to practice her speech, so her verbal skills are falling farther and farther behind her peers.) At the recommendation of a child psychiatrist, her parents have started trying different medications, but so far they haven’t found the right combination of drug and dosage. She’s either completely unaffected or too comatose to eat. Their doctor assures them that they will get it right and that her A.D.H.D. will soon be a worry of the past, but it’s terribly difficult for them as parents to watch their child go through this. They also have the self-doubt that comes along with medicating a young child. Is it safe? Should we wait until she’s older? What will her teachers say? The whole thing blows. Given our family history, we’ve been extremely lucky that none of our children suffer from A.D.D. No Einsteins in the bunch either, but I’m okay with that. If they work hard and do their best, they’ll succeed. That’s a lot harder to accomplish when you suffer from A.D.D. Peace O.U.T. Danielle Wilson is a Carmel resident and contributing columnist. 131st St. to be named Main throughout

The City of Carmel announced last week that 131st Street will be renamed Main Street for all residents and businesses with Carmel mailing addresses. Currently, sections of this roadway are referred to as Main Street while, in other areas, it is called 131st Street. According to the city’s release on the renaming, the change is occurring to help alleviate confusion for travelers and new residents as well as create a central reference point for cross-city navigation. This name change will officially take effect March 15. Beginning that date, all 131st Street signs will begin to be replaced by Main Street signs. The only area of 131st/Main Street where the change will

Council still seeking data on CRC finances

not occur at this time is on the far west side where mailing addresses carry the Westfield designation because there is already a Main Street in Westfield. If the city name is changed in the addresses of this area, the street would be renamed there as well. In addition to the street name change, a limited number of residences will undergo house numbering changes simultaneously. As Carmel grew west of Meridian, where the 131st Street name was used, the house numbering began again with Meridian as the zero hundred block, where previously, Range Line Road was used. Therefore, changing the street name to Main Street in this area would create duplicate addresses.

By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel For months, the City Council has been questioning the Carmel Redevelopment Commission’s management Accetturo of finances. Some answers were provided during the council’s March 1 meeting, but questions still remain. Mayor Jim Brainard and the CRC have repeatedly stated that no residential taxes will be used to fund the $150 million Center for the Performing Arts. During the meeting, Loren Matthes, a partner with the city’s financial consultant H.J. Umbaugh and Associates presented information on the city’s tax increment financing (TIF) indicating that, even with conservative assumptions, there would be enough TIF money to fund the CRC’s current outstanding obligations – without using fund collected from residential taxes – through 2023. However some council members said critical information was missing from the report, thus preventing them from being confident in its conclusion. “We’re looking for the whole picture,” Councilman John Accetturo said. “I’ve never seen this sort of piecemeal report. We need to see a report with everything

in it.” Accetturo and other members of the council expressed their concerns over the lack of data regarding operating costs and other expenses. Matthes’ report, Accetturo said, showed that the TIF revenue should be able to cover the “mortgage payments” but didn’t address the secondary costs associated with the arts center and other projects. Brainard challenged that most operating costs are “minimal” compared to the larger expenses, but council president Rich Sharp said they are still too large to be disregarded. He also questioned why Umbaugh’s estimates didn’t account for any current developments to be scaled back due to the economy. Brainard argued, though, that the firm’s assumption that no new development would occur for an extended period of time was cautious enough. “Even during this recession we’ve seen new buildings built but we’re assuming here that there won’t be one shovel in the ground,” he said. All council members posing questions acknowledged that the information provided was helpful, but all mentioned that more was needed before the council could feel confident in the CRC’s future finances “We’re just trying to get to the bottom line,” Accetturo said.

The McNamaras and the founding of OLMC COMMENTARY By Danny O’Malia Dick McNamara goes about as far back with Carmel as anyone I know. In the 30s, his dad bought a large brick home on what is now Oak Ridge Road (formerly Our Lady of Mt. Carmel’s rectory). His family lived on Indy’s north side but immeMcNamara diately began spending summers in the house (built in 1861) and raising horses there. “The original idea was to give us ten kids summers on the farm rather than in the city,” McNamara said. Eventually the family owned 700 acres of land, including what is now The Village of Mt. Carmel and Village Farms. Around 1955, a new Catholic parish was being planned. Father McDonald, the first pastor, approached McNamara’s dad, Leo C. McNamara, asking for support. The diocese had land on “Old” Meridian near where the Ritz Charles is now. Leo convinced Father Mac that this ground

would be unsafe due to the heavy U.S. 31 traffic and offered to donate the 12 acres on which OLMC sits today. The McNamara Construction Company, which Leo owned, planned The Village and some surrounding areas for housing to surround the new church and school. Many of the streets in The village, such as Adios and Haldale, are named for some of Two Gaits’ most successful horses, McNamara said. Dick and wife Peg sill live in The Village, within a stone’s throw of the OLMC property. They’ve lived in their home since 1964, a home built by his dad’s construction company. He shared one last OLMC/Village fact with me. The streets in The Village were laid out to resemble The Rosary. I’ve driven those streets many times and wondered about why the subdivision was laid out the way it was. I never imagined that it had to do with the founding of my parish, OLMC.

CSO League members go all out for their cause COMMENTARY By jeff Worrell The lights dim, and the crowd begins to quiet. A full house shows its eagerness with applause, as Dr. David Bowden makes his way to center stage. He acknowledges the crowd with a bow and steps onto the podium facing his talented musicians, all set to create another masterpiece by the Carmel Symphony Orchestra. Twenty-five very special ladies and one special gentleman are in the audience anticipating the start as Bowden, facing his musical charges, raises his baton high in the air. On his cue, the string section – resembling thoroughbreds – sprints out of the gate, delivering what is always guaranteed to be an evening of pure musical bliss. Those special folks in the audience – members of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra League – beam with pride, knowing in a sense, they are performing as well. The league supports the organization by helping to raise funds and provide labor for any projects. President Barbara Crawford speaks affectionately of each member of the tight-knit group, stating, “Whatever Operations Director Denise Ryan needs, we are there. We try to do anything we can to help ensure our city maintains a quality orchestra.”

13658 Smokey Ridge Place

The ladies and one gentleman routinely help out before, after and during concerts, again, “Doing whatever Denise needs to have done.” But the group plays a critical role raising money to keep CSO in the black. Its next big moneymaker is coming up April 20 at Oak Hill Mansion – a spring event featuring Blair Clark’s crooning and a showing of vintage aprons by Jean Kyle, as well as a beautiful lunch kicking off at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $35 and can be obtained by calling 317-575-9737. Really cool tote bags are also for sale from most league members. If you see Barb anywhere near her car, they are in her trunk and cost only $25. As the final note of the evening fades to just a memory and the patrons jump to their feet, the special league members in the audience vigorously clap right along with everyone else. President Barb, VP Doug, founder Jeanne Book and crew, just between you and me, relish the applause as you look around the hall and savor just a little bit of that applause for yourselves. You deserve it. Jeff Worrell is a local business owner. He recognizes volunteers on “Connecting with Carmel” on cable channel 16. Contact him at jworrell@advantagemedical.com

COMMENTARY By Jason “Hogjawz” Peek Instead of getting a bunch of opinions this week at the shop, I decided to go to a good friend of mine of 12 years who works in the school community to get some facts on the $12 million school referendum. You can also give some thought yourself and look up the facts if you have a minute. According to my friend, the money the schools are asking for in Carmel are actually below the state’s average of $6,300 per student. Carmel’s, he said, totals to about $5,400 and that’s state and federal money combined for each student. IPS per student is $12,000 a year and the state average referendum is $14 million. Carmel is 3rd or 4th lowest on the totem pole in received money and they are just asking the $12 million a year for seven years. That totals to $84 million. Unlike some schools they haven’t tried to get parents to pay for bus rides, for their children

‘I don’t try to be fair …’ Is your home fading away? COMMENTARY By Becky Kapsalis Those are the words used by one of my mentors, “Parent Talk” author Chick Moorman. Chick prefers to do what is equitable, not equal. Equitability is characterized by justice or fairness and impartialness toward those involved. Equality, on the other hand, is defined as rights, treatment quantity or value equal to all others in a specific group. For example, Johnny, who is 12, gets to stay up later than Billy, who is 11. Billy complains, “It’s not fair. Johnny gets to stay up later than me.” Our usual response might be, “Johnny is older and doesn’t need as much sleep.” How is Billy to process that information when all he knows is it’s not fair? According to Moorman, his response to Billy might be, “I don’t try to be fair … I’m more interested in being equitable. You’re chances of getting what you need are better if I treat you equitably, not equally.” This is a dilemma for families with more than one child: “She got more presents than me at Christmas.” “He gets to stay out later than me.”

“He had four cupcakes, why can’t I?” “That’s not fair!” So instead of attempting to treat our children equally, try being equitable – impartial towards those involved. Being equitable means not favoring one person or side more than another. Being equitable is being neutral, unbiased, objective, detached, open-minded, evenhanded and balanced, to mention a few. Being equal, on the other hand, means being identical in size, quantity, value or standard. Even though our children are of the same family, they are unique individuals necessitating unique attentive responses. So when we say, “I don’t try to be fair,” we are really saying, “You are a unique person not to be treated the same as anyone else in the family.” It works and is another way of preventing power struggles between parents and siblings. Even more tricky than rocking a rhyme COMMENTARY By Brandie Bohney Anyone else remember Run DMC? “It’s tricky to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme that’s right on time! It’s tricky!” Well, today’s topic is tricky, too. Certain plurals create a real bugaboo for writers and speakers alike. Oh, sure, there are irregular plurals that are formed without an s-ending, and there are plurals of words that end in s. But the plurals to which I am referring today are those which need and s in order to be made plural, but for which the s does not go at the end of the word. Need an example to help you along? Mother-in-law. What? Your mother-in-law doesn’t help you along? Join the club. Seriously, though, in order to form the plural of mother-in-law – or any in-law, for that matter – the s cannot go at the end of the word. You aren’t pluralizing law; you’re pluralizing mother. The fact that they’re both part of the same hyphenated word is irrelevant. So the plural form

of mother-in-law is mothersin-law. And if you have to form this plural very often because you have more than one mother-in-law, let me just express my condolences now: I’m so sorry. Our relations by marriage are not the only tricksters in this group, though. How about measurements ending in –ful? Ooooh. You probably hadn’t considered that. Technically, words like spoonful, bucketful, crateful, cupful, can be pluralized either way: spoonsful or spoonfuls. With the exception of nonstandards like bucketful and crateful, though, the s-on-the-end pluralization is more frequently considered correct. And that, my friends, is truly tricky. Tr-tr-tr-tr-tricky! Brandie Bohney is a grammar enthusiast and former English teacher. If you have a grammarrelated question, please email her at bbthegrammarguru@gmail.com.

Olympic athletes inspire, do things the right way COMMENTARY By Maddie Bourgerie This year, for the first time, I truly enjoyed watching the Olympics. I enjoyed seeing the efforts of the athletes when competing, the excitement that overcame them when they performed well, and the emotions that flowed out when the stood on the winner’s podium. It was entertaining and in some ways rewarding. The Olympic athletes make it look so easy. When I watch curling, for example, I think, “I could do that.” But when I saw a clip about curling and its true difficulty, it made me realize it wouldn’t be so easy. There is a great deal more to the game than simply throwing a rock down an enlarged shuffle board. It is sometimes hard to wrap my head around how much these athletes put in to their sports and how talent alone didn’t get them there. They have inspired me in many ways. They are great examples of how to have true passion for something. It takes effort, love for the game and an all-around belief in oneself. Every competitor in the Olympic Games obtains these qualities, and I think we should all use them as an example. Every person has dreams and aspires to be something. Applying no effort or passion is

like a disease in high school students. It is sad to me to see how these students simply don’t have passion for anything, and this usually results in heading down the wrong road. I think developing passion and an aspiration starts with believing in yourself. The best thing my parents ever did for me was to encourage me to be very involved in school or some type of program. It started as a sport. Through junior high and high school, it was a rule that my sisters and I had to be playing a sport, and if we weren’t, we had to find something else to occupy our time. Because of this, I developed a competitive spirit and found I had to believe in myself to be successful. I ended up giving up sports, because I learned that my talents lied in other areas, but what I learned while playing them will stand out in everything I do for the rest of my life. The Olympics shows that if those attributes stay within you, one day your goals will turn into reality. Maddi Bourgerie is a student at Carmel High School. Contact her at maddiclarexo10@aol.com

The 80/20 rule of a gorgeous home! COMMENTARY By Vicky Earley Twenty percent of the time, when I enter a client’s home, they believe they need to change 80 percent too much to pull their home together. Oh, you know where I am headed with this – it is all about the old 80/20 rule by Pareto. Twenty percent of your activities produce 80 percent of your results. Are you focusing on the 80, or the 20? Focus on the 20! Start this process by writing down 20 changes that will produce real results. Be brutal with yourself. If you are longing for hardwood floors, new door hardwood, new tile in the master bath and storage shelves for your kid’s playroom, but still have a sofa that drags on the floor, you could blow the budget and still not have a single room that feels good. Because these changes probably represent separate areas in your home, it is time to isolate the 20 percent of your home (probably two rooms) that can really make a difference. Select these areas based on the idea that they would really benefit from your attention and are important to the quality of life in your home. Often, this could be the family room and kitchen. The

» Layered flooring – According to Marilyn Incerty, trend director for Cost Plus World Market, layering floor coverings adds richness and warmth. She suggested “overlapping several smaller, lightweight rugs with patterns and colors that are complementary.” Those with wall-to-wall carpeting can still get in on this trend. Place “a rug over existing carpet for an instant splash of color or pattern,” said Incerty. “This is a great trick for avoiding the hassle and expense of ripping out existing carpeting when you want an update.” - articles.sfgate.com

other areas are not forgotten…they are simply in queue. Success in decorating comes when it is packaged with completion rather than scattered. These two spaces will become our focus area. At this point, outside of “pick up and clean up,” put blinders on. Pick your high-leverage items in this space to tackle. Estimate the time and money required and put the rest on the backburner. This should represent the 20 percent that will make a difference in the space. The best part of this approach is that once the big-impact issues are completed, the remaining 80 percent might not require

as much change as originally anticipated. Before you take action, plan enough ahead to ensure your future decorating changes will flow. I call this your “design thread,” because it will take you from one room to the next with a connecting element. Always consider style and color in your thread! You will become stymied by something. Consider this as being “stuck in the mud.” It happens to the best. Spinning wheels is counterproductive, so hire a “tow” from an outside source. If your friend is a decorator, employ him or her for a fee, and see if the job can get jump started. Design stores can proffer advice if you don’t have a decorator in reserve. Hit-and-miss (80 percent) decorating will always be a process with little reward, so isolating the biggest impact (20 percent) in 20 percent of your home will result in a great space! Happy decorating!

Making the ‘The Change’ more gentle COMMENTARY By Angela LaSalle M.D. Worsening PMS, changes in the timing of your menstrual cycle, night sweats, foggy thinking, insomnia and low libido are only a few of the symptoms of fluctuating hormones. Perimenopause refers to the years prior to the actual end of the menstrual cycles in which women begin to experience symptoms. The ups and downs of the hormones and its discomforts have earned this process its nickname “The Change.” The average age of menopause is around 51, but genetics, nutrition, stress levels and habits such as lack of exercise and smoking can affect the onset of symptoms. Women may begin to experience symptoms as early as in their 30s, as ovulation becomes less predictable and less progesterone is produced in the weeks prior to starting their flow. Estrogen levels can also fluctuate, causing a wide range of symptoms. If you are experiencing the following, consider talking to your doctor about checking hormone levels. • Hot flashes or night sweats • Insomnia • Vaginal dryness • Mood swings, irritability • Body aches

• Memory and concentration issues • Low libido • Hair loss • Changes in timing of menstrual cycles • Changes in flow (heavier or lighter cycles) • Bone loss (osteoporosis) The best time to check levels is in the second half of the cycles around days 19-22, counting day one as the day you start your flow. Perimenopausal symptoms can be improved by eliminating sugar and processed foods, getting regular exercise and managing stress. Iron deficiency, lack of vitamin D, B vitamins or omega 3 fatty acids can also affect your energy levels and hormone function. Working with your doctor is important to rule out nutrient deficiencies and to decide if low dose hormone replacement is needed for symptom control. He or she can take your own individual risk factors into account to make a plan that helps “The Change” become a more gentle transition.

Tanning salon tax just as discriminatory as ‘Botax’ COMMENTARY By Dr. Barry Eppley The recent surprise decision by Sen. Evan Bayh to not seek re-election is likely a strong reflection of his desire to flee an unpopular ship. Perhaps Bayh knew that as the details of the health care bill began to see the light of day, great public disdain for all those who voted for it was sure to occur. As a plastic surgeon, I was happy to see the unsavory “Botax” (a 5 percent tax on all cosmetic procedures, surgery or otherwise) was cut from the final version of the Senate health care reform bill. The “Botax” was eventually eliminated when it was rightly pointed out that it was not only a discriminatory tax on women but a punishment for those who sought self-improvement. As a replacement for taxing cosmetic surgery, the Senate desperately searched for ways to redistribute more of your money. They turned their focus to … indoor tanning, of all things. Known as the “Tan Plan,” a 10 percent federal tax on indoor tanning was quietly included in the revised bill. Optimistically, it is expected to generate close to 3 billion dollars to help pay for the uninsured. Tanning is a more palatable target, because it is considered by many to be unhealthy behavior in the very least.

It’s well worth the investment.” “

While I don’t endorse any behavior that increases the risk of developing skin cancer, this new federal tax is just as reprehensible as the Botax. I am not a tanning expert, but I am certain the vast majority of those who patronize tanning salons are light-skinned individuals seeking to darken their natural skin tone. The Tan Plan is really a racially biased tax, likely unintentionally, but true nonetheless. What the Botax and the Tan Plan demonstrate is that it is virtually impossible to pick and chose what type of human behavior you want to tax (penalize) without raising concerns. If you really want to generate a lot of tax revenue and maybe even change societal health behaviors, there should be a “Fat Food Tax.” Must we really be deluged with food choices with such high fat or sugar contents? Obesity is a far greater health problem than cancer, AIDS and many other medical diseases combined. Such a food tax would, however, would cause a huge societal clamor. Taxing personal lifestyle behaviors is risky and will never be politically popular. Dr. Eppley is an Indianapolis board-certified plastic surgeon. Are you mouse or man? COMMENTARY By Chef Michael Vlasich Does it matter if it is orange, gray, blue or black? Will it affect what I pick, how much I indulge, or if I empty my billfold? Dollar signs or not? Roman numerals or bold font? Lengthy descriptions or short? To the left or underneath? So many decisions. The above are all factors of the psychology of sales effectiveness of menus. When you sit down at my table, my intention is not only to have you satiate your appetite, but also to entice your spending senses into a frenzy so. Believe it or not, chefs think about everything, from the demographics of our dinners to the seasons we are entering. I first began to realize the importance of the mental game in sales as a young chef in culinary school. We did tests to prove the point, then hit it home in one of the restaurants where we would change menus weekly, testing theories, measuring results, seeing firsthand how the mice run the maze to get the cheese. You may ask yourself, “What would be so powerful to make me order until I feel so guilty I volunteer at the local food bank for a week?” The following are a few secrets. Shhhh … don’t tell them I told you. First, colors play a big role. Blue, for example, can be positive or negative, depending on where and how it is used. No natural blue food is found in nature, so subconsciously, we do not like to put anything blue in our mouths. However, in menu-writing 101, we are taught that red and blue as underlying colors or fonts subconsciously stimulate an appetite. On the other hand, we are taught purple and shades of gray do the opposite: deliver a feeling of satiation. Think about this: Do you ever see these colors in restaurants or as wall paper or

covering? Another important part is how we designate the cost of our items. Do we use dollar signs? In this economy, most wisdom states no. Believe it or not, a dollar sign on the menu in front of the value of the food decreases sales by 15 percent. Still, the best sales piece of all to ensure unrelenting repeated sales is to have great consistent food and service, a clean facility, good lighting, easy access, ample parking, a clear, easy-to-read menu with good adjectives, and a friendly, confident capable wait staff. On Friday, we did the “Go Red” luncheon benefiting the American Heart Association. Two items received rave reviews, the entrée, which was vegetarian, and the salad dressing, pomegranate emulsion. I thought I would share this with you as it is a super fruit and will continue to grow even more popular this summer.

Lenny’s Sub Shop is a great sandwich stop for any Carmel resident. Lenny’s is a nation-wide chain which satisfies the need for authentic subs and Philly Cheesesteaks. The main attraction to Lenny’s is their unique subs. Each sub features the original hot pepper relish which adds a unique spice to the sub. The regular Lenny’s sub is seven and a half inches long and has around a half pound of meat and cheese. The large sub is 15 inches and has approximately a pound of meat and cheese. Buy your sub with the “meal deal” and Lenny’s will offer you a drink and chips or a cookie. Beyond hot and cold subs, Lenny’s features sandwiches as well as a diverse kid’s menu. Book OF THE WEEK

CRANBERRY-JALAPENO CHUTNEY

By Gerald Kolpan

Etta

Makes 1 quart Ingredients: • 24 oz. fresh or frozen cranberries • 2 cups fresh orange juice • 1/2 cup cider vinegar • 1 1/2 cup light brown sugar • 2 cups minced onions • 2 tbsp. grated fresh ginger • 1 tsp. minced garlic • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon • 1 tsp. curry powder • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg • 1/2 cup sliced pickled jalapenos or 3/4 cup fresh jalapenos, sliced

20 | March 9, 2010

Directions: Add all ingredients except jalapenos to heavy-bottom saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer 20 minutes. Add jalapenos and cook 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Serve with chicken or pork or as a condiment for sandwiches. Allison Campbell is the executive chef at Harvest Fresh Market. You may e-mail her at allison@ theharvestfreshmarket.com.

Debut novelist Gerald Kolpan imagines the extraordinary life of Etta Place, the real-life companion of Harry Longabaugh, the Sundance Kid (of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fame). This delightful story follows Etta’s adventures from her home town of Philadelphia to the Wild West of turn-of-the-century Wyoming, where she gets involved with the “Hole in the Wall” gang of outlaws. Plucky, beautiful and a superb horsewoman, Etta is a western heroine whose exploits outshine those of Annie Oakley and whose friends include Eleanor Roosevelt, both of whom make appearances this story. Aside from a striking photograph of Etta and Harry Longabaugh, there is little known about the real Etta Place. Author Gerald Kolpan invents a believable life story and effortlessly intertwines fact with fiction in this nostalgic tale of the last days of the Wild West. Interesting tidbits of historical detail, colorful characters and a folksy style lend a tone of wide-eyed exuberance to this tale of a young woman and a nation coming of age. If it’s Malbec, it must be Argentina COMMENTARY By Mo Merhoff & Luci Snyder Although the Malbec grape has been around for centuries, it was almost exclusively used for blending with other varietals to bring the depth of color and richness people wanted to see in their red wines. The great Bordeaux of France all contained the Malbec grape added to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. But Argentina saw the potential of this black beauty and cultivated a winner – rich, yet affordably priced and so dark that when you hold up the glass, light does not pass through. A good Malbec is noted for three things: the almost black color, the rich taste of plum and the high tannins. So if red wines give you a headache, avoid a Malbec. Like other strong reds, drink it with red meat. But it also pairs well with the spices found in Mexican, Indian and Cajun food and barbecued

Hummus is like manna from above in the Middle East By Molly Herner Current in Noblesville During my brief travels to the Middle East, in Jerusalem to be exact, I discovered that hummus , like wine or chocolate, has its very own culture and culturists. Hummus, also spelled hummous, is an age-old condiment dating back to the Roman Empire. Its ingredients are very simple and commonplace in the Middle East, throughout the Mediterranean and even into Central Asia. In Jerusalem hummus is served standard alongside pita bread with meals, as a condiment for gyros and falafel and many other dishes. It is like the “ketchup of the Middle East.” Hummus is a divine combination of freshly boiled and smashed garbanzo beans, finely minced garlic, sesame paste (called tahini), lemon and the purest extra virgin olive oil, which is the first and best pressing of the olives. Because these ingredients grow indigenously in Israel and surrounding countries, hummus there is like manna from the gods! As with any ethnic dish, the fresher the ingredients, the better the outcome. These ingredients,

HUMMUS

however, are also packed and exported making them, not fresh, but readily available. Its pure and simplistic nature is what makes this condiment/sauce so delicious and versatile. Serve with calmata olives and roasted red peppers or on a platter with fresh vegetables, feta cheese and warmed pita.

Molly Herner, is the baker/pastry chef at Matteo’s Ristorante Italiano. You may email her at odette05@aol.com.

Stay home. Be moved.

Ingredients: • 2 cans of chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans) • 1 lemon • 4 or 5 cloves of fresh garlic, finely chopped • ½ cup tahini, or sesame paste (found in the foreign foods aisle of your grocery) • Olive oil, extra virgin Directions: 1. Boil the chickpeas in water until their skins come off and the skim most of the skins out. A few rogue skins pose no threat to your end result. 2. Drain the beans and put them in a blender or food processer. Pulse the beans, garlic and tahini paste until nearly smooth. 3. Steadily blend the mixture on low and slowly pour in olive oil while the hummus purees. Add the juice of a lemon for extra zest. The consistency should be smooth and thick like cream cheese. 4. If the hummus seems too thick add more olive oil or lemon juice to thin it out. 5. Add a dash of salt to taste.

My daughter loves me IN VOGUE Consignment Boutique as much as orange COMMENTARY By David Cain Nothing is more inspiring than your child’s love. The look in their eyes as they glance at you with a look of reliance. You are their rock. You are their cornerstone, their foundation. They look to you for their very existence. You are their essence. I was playing with my 2-year-old daughter. She is fluent in broken English and a second language I call “baby” – a rich result of broken English spoken through a pacifier. Remove the pacifier, and you get broken English, put it in and you get “baby.” Either way, the result is confusing and cute. You’ll smile as often as you’re frustrated. As we played, she stopped suddenly, looked at me and said, “I love you daddy!” I felt the warmth flush through my body, as I smiled at her with great satisfaction she added, “I love orange too!” I had achieved the same status as a color. Not just any color, but orange. Orange and I shared my daughter’s admiration and love. Her love for her father was at par with orange. I wasn’t sure how to react, but I could feel the warmth fade. Like home, business presents opportunities for the same feelings. While you might believe

your customers are in love with your company and its services, if you don’t consistently deliver an experience that is memorable and valuable, that attractive orange might come along and curry their favor. In business, if you are too comfortable with your business, your services or your job, then you’re at risk. If being good is a hurdle for being great, then comfort is the enemy of confidence. Status quo and innovation are foes. Customer service is a misnomer. You service cars. People demand a relationship. They want to talk to a real person, they want you to have an opinion, they want advice, and they want you to care. They want an experience, not a transaction. And it’s an experience that will keep orange at bay and allow you to continue to capture the love and attention of your clients. If you don’t, you’ll be introduced to orange’s dear friend, red, as in red ink. David Cain works at MediaSauce, a digital media and online marketing company in Carmel. The merry-go-round of bad decisions

call 489-4444 for info

COUPONS

COMMENTARY By Rachael Noble Sometimes I like to visit singles hot spots, where I find it interesting to observe the same singles frequenting month after month, year after year. Why is it that so many people can still be single after all these years of seemingly doing the right things – mingling with other singles, dating online, reading relationship books, etc.? While chatting recently with some of my dear friends, we discussed the “merry-go-round of bad decisions” we singles sometimes get stuck on. Not every single desires a relationship or marriage, but for those who do, why are they stuck going ‘round and ‘round?’ Is it truly that they are unable to find Mr. or Ms. Right? Or could bad decisions play a part? Are you stuck dating the bad boy or the party girl? If these types don’t usually result in healthy relationships, why do you keep dating them? Why is it so hard to learn from these mistakes? And how about those dead-end relationships? We may know in our heads this is going nowhere, yet the familiarity keeps us coming back for more. Friend, are you on the merry-go-round of bad decisions? Maybe it’s time to change some habits. First, evaluate if there are things you need to change about yourself (such as being

DON’T NG BEEMRdISaTyS,AOMSUaTRrcIh 22

too sensitive or insecure). Secondly, look for patterns in the way you’ve been hurt (do you keep getting cheated on or date people who won’t spend time with you, etc.?). Begin facing unresolved hurts from the past that keep you dating the same type, in an unhealthy attempt to resolve those hurts. Thirdly, start dating people who are the opposite of what you would normally date, and perhaps that person you would typically push away. Maybe you’d normally consider him too clingy or consider her to not be hot enough for your taste. Perhaps she’s a diamond in the rough that actually has the solid foundations for a healthy relationship! Singles, if you are stuck on the merry-goround of bad decisions, it’s time to jump off into the vast unknown. I’m talking about a conscious effort that is a one-day-at-a-time journey to remain focused on the goal of healthy dating decisions. This territory may seem terribly unsafe, but someday this unknown will become familiar as you venture into the world of healthy relationships!

As is its modus operandi, the timepiece is open source; should you plan on sticking to default, you'll be gifted with a great retro-style Table Tennis for two. The best part? The time changes whenever the clock "loses" – something tells us that gives one side at least a 59-to-1 advantage. - www.engadget.com » Gadget for guitar geeks – Designed to clip on the headstock of any guitar, the i-tab is a 5-inch touchscreen device that displays and scrolls chords and lyrics in perfect time, serving as a sort of musical teleprompter for guitar players. 4GB of built-in storage provides enough space to carry around thousands of tabs, which are conveniently available for sale and download from the i-tab online Tab Store. i-tab comes with 30 free tabs to get you started including songs from U2, Oasis and The Rolling Stones, and it is expected to be available in April for $199.

Having trouble sending e-mail while on the road? COMMENTARY By Gary Hubbard In the early days of e-mail, most of us used only one machine in one location to send and receive our messages, so programs like Outlook (and Outlook Express) did a fine job managing our mail interactions. As we become more mobile or more likely to use more than one computer, it becomes difficult to use programs like Outlook with the same flexibility. Many customers have contacted us saying their laptops are not working correctly because they cannot send out e-mail while they are on the road. They can receive e-mails with no problem, but when they try to send an e-mail, it won’t send and gives an error message or just sits in the outbox. The reason for this problem is Outlook is specifically configured to send mail via your internet provider’s mail system. When you are on the road, you are no longer connecting to your provider, but your computer is still trying to send through your provider and thus errors out. This restriction was implemented by all Internet providers years ago to stem the tide of spam that was sent via unauthorized systems on

the networks. Simply put, you can only send messages via the Comcast mail system if you are on a Comcast Internet connection. Same thing goes for Brighthouse Road Runner users. Your Outlook Express is configured to use your providers outgoing mail system or SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) server, so it gets denied access when you are on the road. If you knew what the SMTP settings were for the new network that you are connecting to from the road, you could change the setting temporarily to get it to work, but there are more elegant solutions available. One option is to use your provider’s “Web mail” interface instead of Outlook Express when you are on the road. • Bright House customers can go to http://webmail.indy.rr.com. • Comcast customers can go to http://comcast.net • AT&T users can go to http://webmail.att.net/ The nice thing about Web mail systems is you don’t even have to use your own laptop to access them. Just understand that what you do will not be saved in your Outlook at home.

Another option is to sign up for a free Gmail account (http://gmail.com), which can be configured to check your other e-mail accounts (Comcast, Roadrunner, AT&T or others). You can set Gmail up to automatically make your messages look like they are coming from your other e-mail account for all outgoing messages or just those that were originally sent to your existing account. You can export your contacts from Outlook Express as a CSV (Comma Separated Values) file, which Gmail can very quickly import. Once you have it all set up, use Gmail at home, on the road, on your friends computer or anywhere you can access the Internet. You will always have your most current contacts, messages and sent mail, no matter where you are. Gmail has a very small learning curve and will likely change your e-mail life in a very good way! My neighbors are starting to get on my nerves COMMENTARY By Dick Wolfsie All my neighbors are very nice, but the grumpy old man in me is slowly emerging. Lately, everything seems to get on my nerves. For example, this past week, I asked the Foxworthys to take down their Christmas tree. I believe yuletide decorations should be removed by Valentine’s Day. Apparently they feel otherwise. I was so annoyed when I got back to my house, I almost tripped over our pumpkin. There’s Darrell, the bachelor. When we have a snowstorm, Darrell is the first to shovel. I never see him actually do it, but when I look out the window, his driveway and walk are completely clear. Not a trace of snow – like it was the first of July. My wife says, “Why can’t you be more like Darrell?” A man doesn’t want to hear this at any age. In the fall, Darrell puts 20 bags of leaves at his curb every trash pick-up day. His lawn is the same size as mine, and I don’t have that many bags all season. I think he’s stealing other people’s leaves. I just can’t prove it. The Monroes have two adorable little girls. The 6-year-old is always asking me stuff. “Why do you get mail?”

“Why does your dog have a tail?” “Why did Mrs. Wolfsie marry you?” As you can see, the Q&A gets tougher once she’s warmed up. If we move, I need to find a kid with easier questions. The Osgoods live to our left. Larry is a professor, a real egghead. Last summer he decided to construct a fence around his yard. He had never done anything like this in his entire life. He had no plans, no instructions. He just got lots of wood and built it. It was a work of art. Do you see why this drives me crazy? Larry also has two kids but no basement in his house. Wouldn’t you assume that someone like that would have a garage full of junk? He doesn’t. Two cars, two bikes and a seed spreader. I’m suspicious. I think the CIA should know about this. The Johnsons have a huge deck in their backyard, but they throw parties in the garage. Usually 20 or 25 friends show up for a fish fry and a plentiful assortment of beer. Everyone watches sports on a huge flat-screen TV. There’s more action in their garage on the weekends than in any room in my house. I asked my wife why we didn’t do the same thing. She said we don’t have 20 friends. The Bentleys have the greatest lawn I have

ever seen. Thick, green, no weeds, flawlessly edged and manicured. I asked Jerry how he got such perfect grass, and he just shrugged. Wait a second: There’s no shrugging in lawn care. I know he’s hiding something. That’s one more thing for me to grumble about. Finally there’s the family in the center of the cul de sac. They used to have a beagle that howled all night, but the dog was a TV star, so the neighbors let it slide. Their new beagle is unemployed, and the barking is driving everyone nuts. The dog is always in their garbage cans, and then the trash ends up blowing across everyone’s front lawn. This thoughtless person also leaves his garage door open all the time, and the inside is disgusting, piled high with boxes of old books – books he wrote but that no one will buy. As grumpy as I’ve become, I’ve tried to be tolerant of this guy. Some people you just have to learn to live with.

Nothing shocks me more than a random act of kindness COMMENTARY By Mike Redmond The nicest thing just happened to me. I got smacked upside the head by a random act of kindness. OK, well, maybe not smacked upside the head. That might be a random act, but it kind of fails the kindness test. But I was just as surprised as if someone had, indeed, come up and planted a palm smartly against my cranium. I was in Greensburg, giving a speech to the Soil and Water Conservation District annual meeting. They had run out of speakers who actually made sense, you see, so I got the job. I was thrilled. I love Soil and Water Conservation District annual meetings. I used to cover them when I was young reporter down in Columbus. Besides, I am in full agreement with the mission of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. No offense to the other agricultural organizations whose dinners I used to cover and would like to speak, in case they feel like calling my agent to ask about my reasonable rates for hilarious after-dinner stories. It’s just that Farm Bureaus and Cooperative Extension Services

and such seem to get more of the attention, while the SWCDs chug along trying to preserve and improve the very stuff that makes agriculture possible in the first place: soil and water. And I like Greensburg. Don’t get me wrong – Indianapolis, where I make my home now, is a great place to live. But the small cities, the towns, those are the places I know best. That’s where I learned my craft. Those places are home. So there I was in Greensburg, giving my speech. The nice folks there offered me some dinner, but I declined. I usually decline dinner before a speech. Number one, I’m on a pretty strict diet, and sorry to say it doesn’t include noodles or mashed potatoes. Number two, a piece of spinach lodged in your incisors, or a wayward belch, can take the pizzazz out of your remarks. So I made the speech, met some wonderful people, shook some hands and shot the breeze, and then it was time to head for home. The gas tank was getting kind of low, so I pulled into a Shell station in Greensburg to fill up. While I was there, I went inside to pick up a couple of bags of beef jerky, which I eat in lieu of real food. I took it up to the counter and

that, my friends, is where I received an act of kindness, randomly. The guy behind the counter looked at the bags and said, “You see how much this stuff costs?” Beef jerky is expensive anytime. In convenience stores it’s ridiculous. “Sure,” I said. “It’s OK. Ring it up.” “All right,” he said. “I just wanted to make sure you saw it.” That, to me, was kind. A clerk in a store has no reason to look out for my financial interests. In fact, you’d expect the opposite. But no. He was trying to be a nice guy, just in case I hadn’t noticed the beef jerky was roughly the same price as gold. Like I said, I couldn’t have been more surprised if he’d smacked me upside the head. The difference was I smiled all the way home, and I’m smiling now. Kindness will do that to you. Especially the random kind. Mike Redmond is an author, journalist, humorist and speaker. Write him at mike@ mikeredmondonline.com or P.O. Box 44385, Indianapolis, IN 46244.

» Lumps and bumps - Dogs and cats can develop small bumps (papules) or larger lumps (nodules) on their skin. The term 'tumor' means an abnormal growth or swelling, and is often used to designate cancer. Often, the word 'lump' also brings the word 'cancer' to mind. There are, however, many other causes of lumps and bumps. Because the cause could be one of scores, having a vet evaluate unusual lumps or bumps is important. » Looking for a quiet pet? – Rabbits are often not on the top of the list when people go pet shopping, but for adults wanting an affectionate but quiet animal, rabbits can make excellent companions. Often thought of as an outdoor starter pet for children, rabbits are actually better indoors with grownups. They can be litter-box trained, and often get along well with cats (but generally not dogs). They love toys and can be fascinating to watch. COMMENTARY By John Mikesell The Pet Poison Helpline offers tips for the prevention of pet poisoning caused by human medications. The PPH has numerous veterinary professionals on staff, including board-certified veterinary medicine specialists, board-certified veterinary critical care specialists and veterinary technicians specifically trained in the field of toxicology. The number is 800-213-6680. Below are the top 10 human medications most frequently ingested by pets. 1. NAIADS (e.g. Advil, Aleve and Motrin). Common household medications called non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) top the list. 2. Acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol). This drug is not safe for pets, especially cats. One regular-strength tablet of acetaminophen may cause damage to a cat’s red blood cells. 3. Antidepressants (e.g. Effexor, Cymbalta, Prozac, Lexapro). While occasionally used in pets, overdoses can lead to serious neurological problems. Pets, especially cats, seem to enjoy the taste of Effexor and often eat the entire pill. 4. ADD/ADHD medications (e.g. Concerta, Adderall, Ritalin). Minimal ingestion of these medications by pets can cause lifethreatening tremors, seizures and elevated

PETS OF THE WEEK Cookie is a 3-year-old female white Staffordshire terrier mix. Cookie is a darling little girl who has brown eyeliner perfectly applied around her right eye – it's just adorable! She arrived at the shelter when the family that adopted her almost a year ago felt she was too active for them so they returned her to us the day after Christmas. Cookie isn't all beauty, she's also got brains: She knows the commands “sit,” “shake,” “down” and “sit pretty.” She's also so smart she's figured out how to climb a 4 foot fence, so this means Cookie will need a home with a 6 foot privacy fence or always be leash walked. Due to her energy level, she would prefer a home with older children who can play and keep up with her.

Birth control (e.g. estrogen, estradiol, progesterone). Can cause bone marrow suppression, particularly in birds. 7. Ace inhibitors (e.g. Zestril, Altace used for blood pressure). Pets ingesting small amounts can normally be monitored at home, unless they have a kidney failure or heart disease. 8. Beta blockers (e.g. Tenormin, Toprol, Coreg). Adding a wine cellar to an unfinished basement number of bottles you need to store. This can range from a small closet to a large room housing thousands of bottles. The overall layout of the room should be designed by an experienced designer. Windows and doors: Standard interior doors won’t work for a wine room. You will need insulated doors and windows. The options can range from a basic exterior door to decorative specialty doors. Windows in the door and a display window are nice options that allow you to look at the beauty of the room when it is finished. Overall room decor: Most wine rooms in basements have tile flooring and stone or wood accents. Functional and decorative display lighting is critical. Make sure the electrician installs an automatic timer on all lights in case you forget to turn them off. COMMENTARY By Larry Greene Question: We would like to add a wine cellar to the unfinished part of our basement. How hard is this to do on our own? Do we need a specialized contractor to help us? Answer: Wine cellars can be complicated, and it is a good idea to hire a remodeling contractor experienced with wine storage. A dedicated wine room needs to be built to withstand the three enemies of wine: heat, light and vibration. Consider the following. Temperature and humidity controls: The room must be completely encapsulated and insulated, and the ceilings and must include a vapor barrier. A specialized cooling unit must be installed to keep the temperature at a constant 55-60 degrees. The best type of cooling unit depends on the size and location of the room and your budget. Racking and millwork: Wine racking and custom millwork represent two of the largest cost items in a wine room. Wood wine racks are

the most popular and can be custom made by a carpenter or purchased from a specialty supplier. Redwood and mahogany are the best species of

wood for racking. Room size and design: The size of a wine room is usually determined based on the

State flower should represent our heritage, not gravesites COMMENTARY By Holly Funk Indiana is so rich in Native American history that they named the whole dang place after them. So why, then, is our state flower, the peony, an exotic flower from China? Adopted as the state flower of Indiana in 1957, it replaced the zinnia, which held the title for 26 years. Both of these selections perplex me, given the rich history of our state, as neither of them represents our past very well. For example, this area was thick with Native Americans when the settlers arrived, and settlers absolutely had to rely on them a bit to survive. (Remember that whole Thanksgiving thing?) And at the same time, the settlers brought many plants with them that ended up finding a home here. The dandelions, for instance. Settlers brought them here as food for honeybees and many parts of the plants are used medicinally as well as nutritionally. The peony was supposedly chosen for its popularity to adorn memorials all over the state. A nice sentiment, I suppose. But I think a flower that represents the history of the people who settled this land would be more appropriate. Native plant enthusiasts absolutely insist that the state flower should be a native wildflower. And I don’t see why that shouldn’t be so. Except

www.youarecurrent.com

for that I think the flower should represent the history of the state, whether it is a native or brought by settlers. After all, we are a direct result of that mix. The state tree, the tulip tree is a great example of that. In fact, the tulip tree’s beautiful flower preceded the zinnia that preceded the peony. Because of its strong but light timber and its importance as habitat for wildlife, this abundant native impacted Native American and early settler life, alike. Now that’s a reason to give it a state designation. Why the zinnia had to replace the flower of the tulip is up for debate, with stories of a seed salesman being the catalyst. But I am glad that the idea was not abandoned and the tree is now recognized as the state tree. If you ask me, I think we should go back to the tulip tree flower – or an apple blossom, something that provides beauty and has a rich history that reflects the people who are Hoosiers. Including the ones that don’t have peonies adorning their graves.

The meaning of life (It can’t be that easy) COMMENTARY By Bob Walters What is the meaning of life? Many philosophers, spiritualists, deep thinkers, academics, theorists, Darwinists, humanists, humorists, dreamers, artists, odds-makers, rascals – and more than a few theologians – make the answer to that question more difficult than it needs to be. The answer, the capital-T Truth, is built into Christian doctrine: Life means seeking God, praising God, loving God … and loving other humans as we love ourselves. Our faith in Jesus Christ on the Cross – that He erased our sins so we may have eternal life and fellowship with God in heaven (John 3:16) – is the Truth’s straight path and narrow gate (Matthew 7:13-14). Looking around us, it is hard to imagine this life should be dedicated to God and other humans, because so much of it seems to be dedicated to ourselves. Our innate fear of death, our natural appetites (some sinful, some not), a culture that exalts self, even our God-given freedom, all conspire against our trust in Christ’s new covenant and new creation, which divinely calls us not to selfish power, but to selfless, sacrificial love. God promises this new covenant in the Old Testament (Jeremiah 31:31), and Christ delivers it in the New Testament (Luke 22:20). St. Paul explains that when we allow Christ to live in

our hearts, we are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). With this comes new meaning for our lives. Is life’s meaning founded in loving our family, neighbor and nation? Only if we understand it is God Who authored and gives meaning to love. Is life’s meaning money, wealth, power … or fear? Each can wreak spiritual destruction – as can poverty or ill-health – if loving God is not one’s first priority. Love is an exercise of our God-given freedom; but love isn’t something we create. We think we do, but … we don’t. We can’t. “God is love” (1 John 4:8, 16). Period. Believe it. A personal relationship with Christ that truly gives one’s life peace, joy and meaning “beyond all understanding” (Philippians 4:7) is not what the above earthly thinkers readily or willingly accept as life’s meaning. They put too much “me” in meaning, and too much “I” in idea. Life’s true meaning is only in us if Christ is in us, and if our faith is in Christ, because life’s meaning is Christ. Know what I mean? Bob Walters (www.believerbob. blogspot.com, email rlwcom@ aol.com) quotes the Westminster Catechism of 1647: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him for ever.” Amen.
