No remonstrance from business owners on 96th St. roundabouts By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com The City of Carmel is proceeding with the transformation of seven 96th Street intersections into roundabouts, including Keystone Parkway. transportation Because 96th Street is the border between Indianapolis and Carmel, Christine Scales, an Indianapolis City County Councilor for that area, has voiced opposition to four of the seven roundabouts: Hazel Dell Parkway, Gray Road, Delegates Row and Randall Drive. She claims that business owners don’t want the roundabouts because construction will keep customers away and when completed, drivers will move quickly through the intersections and not check out the area businesses. But at a widely advertised public meeting March 28, no business owners showed up at Carmel City Hall to remonstrate. Josh Kirsh, who works for Carmel’s planning department, said he’s been on a foot campaign, walking door-to-door to meet with each business owner along the 96th Street corridor to explain the project. None have complained, he said. “What I’m hearing from these business owners is excitement,” Kirsh said. Kirsh said business owners tell him the roundabouts will boost business because traffic currently backs up so much that some people avoid the area. “They say, ‘I wouldn’t come to this area if I didn’t work here,’” he said. Current in Carmel reached out to several businesses but couldn’t find any that expressed anger about the roundabouts. Some roundabouts might cut into parking spaces for businesses, most notably Scotty’s Brewhouse, but City Engineer Jeremy Kashman said plans have been tweaked to reduce impact on businesses. Scales, who was not at the March 28 meeting, said the problem with roundabouts is people don’t stop like they do at stoplights and notice new businesses. Kashman said there’s no proof traffic backups help

businesses. “We haven’t seen any data to back that up,” Kashman said. “As people can move through the corridor it becomes more visible. I’m a person that if I’m going to sit and wait, then I’d avoid that area.” Scales said many businesses are opposed to the roundabouts. She declined to give names because the business owners did not want to be quoted in the newspaper. “I went to great effort to contact business owners leasing their retail or commercial office space and will reiterate that each respondent to my questions was opposed to the roundabouts and feared their business would not survive through the construction period,” she said in an email. Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said he’s received no complaints. He said any complaints about 96th Street roundabouts came many years ago, and those business owners have since changed their minds because they’ve seen how roundabouts work. Carmel firefighter Tim Griffin said roundabouts are safer because they reduce the likelihood of head-on collisions. As a result, Carmel no longer needs a “jaws of life” for accidents. “It’s really phenomenal to see the massive decrease in accidents,” Griffin said. “I see the safety of roundabouts, and I want every intersection to be that because I’m going to have five daughters out on the road, and I want them to be safe.”

Referendum meetings – Carmel Clay Schools will host a series of community meetings to discuss the upcoming referendum vote and its impact. Upcoming meetings include: Cherry Tree Elementary, 6:30 p.m. April 12; Forest Dale Elementary, 6:30 p.m. April 13; Carmel Middle School, 7:30 p.m. April 17.

New construction projects, road closures and traffic restrictions are on tap in Carmel in the next week. • 136th Street and Gray Road – This intersection will be closed for 45 days for the construction of a new roundabout. The closure will begin upon completion of utility work, likely in late April. • 126th Street and Gray Road — This new roundabout project has been delayed by utility work and will remain open until further notice. • 126th Street and Range Line Road — Work will begin on or after April 24 on construction of a new roundabout to replace the signalized intersection. During the first phase, the intersection will remain open to one lane of northbound and one lane of southbound traffic on Range Line Road. The traffic pattern on 126th Street will remain the same, westbound only from Keystone Parkway. Phase two is expected to begin May 30 and will involve a complete closure of the intersection for about 45 days. Plans call for all of 126th Street from Keystone Parkway to Range Line Road, and the new roundabout intersection, to be open by midJune, weather-permitting. *Source: City of Carmel

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said the City of Carmel is examining whether to invest millions of dollars in updating the city-owned public golf brookshire course at Brookshire. He said an architectural study has been done to look at a $3 million redesign for the clubhouse. “We are looking at various types of clubhouses and architectural styles,” Brainard said. “We need to decide on the square footage. We’re in that process.” Brainard He said the new clubhouse could include meeting spaces, restaurant and an improved pro shop. At the same time, he said it would be wise to invest at least $1 million to update the course.. “We had a consultant look at it, and the play is too slow,” Brainard said. “You can’t make enough (money). And our goal isn’t to make money, but we want to be closer to revenue-neutral. We still want it to be affordable and a place where young people can learn to golf. We aren’t getting enough play on the course due to trees on the fairway. It’s a difficult course. There could be improvements made to speed up play.” Brainard said fees could be increased to pay for changes, but he said the goal is to keep prices low and increase the rate of play to allow more golfers on the course each day. He said changes could be funded through city bonds. Currently, players can book an 18-hole tee time online for between $24 and $39, which is much cheaper than many other area courses. “We’d like to keep it affordable so younger players who are learning the game or retirees on a fixed income can enjoy the course,” Brainard said. Brookshire Golf Course, which is surrounded by homes, was built in 1970. The City of Carmel purchased it in 2006 for $2.6 million. Brainard said the city wanted to preserve the course and make sure it wasn’t turned into more development. Originally, nearby homeowners owned the pool that is attached to Brookshire’s clubhouse, but the city purchased it and now leases it to the nearby neighborhood. Brainard said if the pool is removed as part of the clubhouse expansion, a replacement pool will be built.

Carmel celebrates caramel By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For one day, Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard made a proclamation to rename his beloved city as Caramel, pronounced event ker-uh-muhl, although it pained him to do so. “A lot of people have questioned how we pronounce our town’s name over the years, especially given that little town out in California that says it wrong,” Brainard said. Werther’s Originals chose Carmel to celebrate National Caramel Day April 5 in the Carmel Arts & Design District. Guests enjoyed sampling free caramels, games and voting on whether caramel is pronounced kar-muhl or ker-uh-mehl. “It’s a great promotion for Werther’s, and it’s fun for the people in Carmel,” Brainard said. Another guest was Carmel High School standout Mark Herrmann, who played quarterback for Purdue and five NFL teams, including the Indianapolis Colts. Herrmann said he was contacted by Werther’s representatives. “They know I was a Carmel guy, so they thought it was a good fit,” Herrmann said. “I voted for kar-muhl over ker-uh-muhl.”

Herrmann is in the minority nationally. Meredith Suffron, director of marketing for Werther’s Originals, said nationally 57 percent voted for ker-uh-muhl. The only region that voted for kar-muhl was the Midwest, where it’s reversed with 57 percent favoring that pronunciation. At the event, 58 percent of 385 people voted for kar-muhl.

Kids impress in design contest Commentary by Adam Aasen I was honored to serve as a judge at the third annual Creekside Middle School Sunrise Home Design environment Challenge March 28. It’s a contest where more than 400 seventh-grade math and science students form teams and design their own homes using 3-D computer technology. They do complicated math to figure out how to make the houses as energy efficient as possible. The winning team gets its home drawn up as an actual architectural design by Old Town Design Group. The company’s founder, Justin Moffett, said they even incorporated an idea from last year’s winning design into a home that’s soon to be built. I asked Moffett if these students would end up working for him one day. “I don’t know if I can afford them,” he said. “These kids are going places.” It was hard to decide which teams were the best. There were professional brochures, expertly edited video presentations, handmade architectural models, precise charts/graphs and well-rehearsed speeches.

“I think I’m most impressed with the technology that students use,” Moffett said. “We had 3-D walk-arounds of the model and 3-D-printed models. It’s amazing.” Seventh-grade teachers Chris Bartley and Jeff Kirch said these students spent most of the month of March putting together these projects. Kirch said the contest is a great way to expose them to public speaking. “For many of us growing up, we didn’t really get a chance to do a real presentation for strangers until college,” he said. “So this is a great learning experience.” Read the full column at currentincarmel. com

CHS wins world affairs event By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com After being invited to compete in the Indiana Council on World Affairs state competition, Carmel achievement social studies teacher John Carter had three weeks to prepare. It took one week to put together a team. Carter, a Rho Kappa Society (National Social Studies Honor Society) adviser, was able to form three teams. CHS won the Academic WorldQuest state competition, which covered international relations and foreign affairs, edging Warren Central 83 to 81. The other two Carmel teams finished fourth and fifth. The winning team included Ayon Mitra, Matthew Simons, Dalton Thompson and Xuchen Wei. The group will advance to the national competition April 27 to 29 in Washington, D.C. Michael Wang, the alternate, will sub for Wei, who will compete in a science competition that weekend. “Although at first we were rather intimidated by how quickly the competition was approaching, we had all been learning about international affairs and current events together in Junior States of America,

Mitra said the group believed those two weeks were enough to gain a solid understanding of the material. “Our team’s biggest strength was our coordination,” Mitra said. “In the two weeks that we were preparing, we worked together to divide topics amongst ourselves based on our academic backgrounds and relative strengths.

Traders Point North growing By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Traders Point Christian Church North’s driving motivation for expansion was clear. “Our mission is removing faith barriers that keep people from Jesus,” Traders Point North Campus Pastor Greg Anderson said. “One of the barriers is distance. People were traveling 20 to 30 minutes to the Northwest campus (in Whitestown). That’s just too far for people to be involved and be engaged.” The first service in its new Carmel church, 1242 W. 136th St., was Feb. 19. The building was formerly the home of Central Christian Church, which has moved to a new building in Westfield. “We love the location. It is in the center of Carmel and right off 31,” said Anderson, a Zionsville resident. “We’re drawing more from east Carmel, so it’s an easy commute over here. People love the feel and look.” In April 2015, the non-denominational church announced it would start a second campus in Carmel. Services started at Creekside Middle School with a soft launch in December 2015. There were approximately 350 people at the first two services, but they kept growing.

Anderson said they averaged about 720 people at Creekside. “We’ve averaged 1,210 in this new building,” Anderson said. The sermon is typically broadcast from the Northwest church in Whitestown. The building remodeling started in May 2016 while Central Christian Church was still conducting services. The church launched a downtown Indianapolis campus in January, and an Avon campus is set to open in the fall at a temporary site at Avon Middle School. For more, visit tpcc.org.

Teams will attempt to pull a 24-ton aircraft 15 feet during the Pulling for Wishes Plane Pull. (Submitted photo)

Plane pull honors late Carmel boy By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Pam Frenzel felt a little guilty enjoying a 2004 trip to Disney World funded through the Indiana Children’s fundraiser Wish Fund for her son, Tyler. He was looking and feeling healthy after battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia, while other kids enjoying wish trips were clearly facing significant health struggles. But as it turned out, that week in Florida was the last big trip the Carmel family took together, as Tyler relapsed a week later and died within a year at age 9. “(The Disney trip) is one of our lasting great memories that we have as a family with him,” Frenzel said. “Looking back we see how impactful it really was.” Now, the family encourages donations to ICWF, which grants wishes to children age 3 to 18 who are facing life-threatening illnesses. One of its major fundraisers is the annual Pulling for Wishes Plane Pull, which has been dedicated to Tyler’s memory since it began in 2011. This year’s event is set to begin at 9 a.m. April 22 at the Republic Airline hangar near Indianapolis International Airport, 3998 S. Hoffman Rd., Indianapolis. Teams of 10 people, including three

females, must raise at least $500 for a chance to pull a 24-ton aircraft 15 feet. At the end of the event, prizes are given for the fastest times and best team costume. The free event will also include appearances by the Indiana Pacemates, Pacers mascot Boomer, Colts cheerleaders and other celebrities. Guests can enjoy a kids zone, aircraft tours and refreshments. The fundraising will continue in the evening with the Pulling for Wishes Plane Pull Gala at Prime 47 in Carmel. “It is a fun-filled evening with great food, live and silent auction, music and a live performance by national comedian and impressionist Frank Caliendo,” said LG Edwards, ICWF board president. In addition to ICWF, other beneficiaries this year are Riley Children’s Foundation and Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. Frenzel said Tyler had ties to each of them. ICWF granted his wish. He was a patient at PMCH during much of his battle with leukemia, and he went to Riley Hospital when he needed a bone marrow transplant. “I think that’s really neat,” Frenzel said. “Tyler has this thread woven through each of the beneficiaries.” Learn more at IndyWish.org or rjet.com. Teams must register by April 14.

springmill crossing Compiled by Adam Aasen Current in Carmel is featuring different neighborhoods throughout the city limits. If you’d like readers to learn more about where you live, email me at adam@youarecurrent.com. This week I talked to Jeremy Glowacki, president of the Springmill Crossing neighborhood association. Neighborhood: Springmill Crossing Location: Entrances on 136th and Springmill Road Size: 332 homes Makeup of residents: Our homes range in re-sale price from around $275,000 to $400,000, and the neighborhood feeds into a very well-regarded elementary school in Smoky Row and provides close proximity to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic School. Seems like lately, we’re one of the neighborhoods where young couples land when they leave Broad Ripple to start their family. What makes it unique: Our neighborhood was built in the late 1980s, and our

semi-custom homes and mature trees are a strong appeal to home buyers. We have two lighted tennis courts and a neighborhood pool and swim club for kids in the summer. Top issues: There was some concern for a while about a string of robberies in the area, but that’s not a problem currently. Fighting basement flooding after big storms is a constant challenge. Fun events: In May, there’s a family movie night and in the fall we host Fall Fest. We have an Easter Egg Hunt each spring and we bring in a Carmel fire truck to lead a bike parade to celebrate July 4 and Halloween. Across Hamilton County, the program helps nearly 500 children per year. How to drive in the roundabout capital of the U.S.

How much is your home worth? Stop in today to find out.

Commentary by Adam Aasen

WE ARE CARMEL REAL ESTATE We are conveniently located in the Carmel Arts and Design District, next to Scotty's. Selling Carmel real estate since 1995.

CARRIE HOLLE

I recently asked readers of Current in Carmel what kinds of stories they want to see in print. Several said Citybeat they wanted to read a story about “how people don’t know how to drive through roundabouts.” Carmel is the roundabout capital of the U.S., with more than 100 constructed and about 30 more on the way. So I sought opinions on the common mistakes people make when driving through a roundabout. I posted on Twitter and Facebook and was flooded with public and private responses. Some people suggested common sense things, such as “Don’t text and drive” or “Don’t speed.” I laughed at how many people say they see people go clockwise through a roundabout, which means they turned into traffic instead of turning right. I hope that isn’t a common occurrence. Scary. But the two biggest mistakes seem to be braking and changing lanes.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard strongly tells people that you’re not supposed to stop inside of a roundabout to let other drivers in. You’ll likely cause an accident and be hit from behind. Brainard also said motorists shouldn’t be too timid and wait for someone completely on the other side of a roundabout to go through before entering. Just jump in when there’s a safe opening. It’ll help keep traffic moving, which is the point of roundabouts. Or one of the main points, at least. People say they see drivers make a complete stop before entering an empty roundabout as if it were a four-way stop. That’s unnecessary, and the motorists behind you might be annoyed. Single-lane roundabouts are easy to navigate, but double-lane ones can be trickier for motorists because they don’t know which lane they’re supposed to be in or when to change lanes. It is not advised to change lanes in the middle of a roundabout. Here’s what you do: To go straight or right, get in the right lane. To go straight or left, or make a make U-turn, get in the left lane. It’s also important to use your right turn signal when you plan to exit the roundabout. City councilor Bruce Kimball said speed is a big factor, especially since roundabouts are often used for pedestrian crosswalks. He said if everyone slows down and pays attention, other issues won’t be as big of a deal. City councilor Jeff Worrell said constituents often ask him what to do about bad roundabout drivers. “Here’s my advice: slow down, always look left twice and pay attention to the markings on your lane,” he said.

She knows she can’t have him because he’s this very holy man. She is respectful of that, but she can’t deny this part of her that is drawn to him. It’s interesting to play that and go through the sadness she experiences.” Brown said the show requires a different way of carrying the body to express emotions. “We use different movements to express those emotions, which I think is the beauty of dance,” Brown said. “Some days we go home very emotionally drained and spent from everything.” Abbie Lessaris is in her third year playing both Pontius Pilate’s wife, Claudia, and the cross itself. “I think the cross goes back and forth between being human and an object,” Lessaris said. “So for a large portion of the show, I’m an object. There is a scene where Jesus accepts his cross, so we have like a friendship. I play a role that comforts him.” Lessaris said Claudia tries unsuccessfully to persuade her husband not to prosecute Jesus. Hancock said “SUPERHERO” is one of his favorite productions because it showcases the company so well. “Every character is able to have a

special moment in the show, and their relationship with the main character, Jesus, is really interesting,” Hancock said. “It’s not particularly set in a geographic location. It could be anywhere at any time.” The costumes are inspired by styles from India. Hancock travels to India frequently to work with dance companies. “We have a large connection to the Indian community here,” he said.

‘La Casa Azul’ Broadway-bound? Hancock is attempting to gain support to place his original musical, “La Casa Azul,” on Broadway. The show debuted at The Tarkington in June 2015 and was so well-received it was held again in October. “It’s a Broadway-style musical about Frida Kahlo, the Mexican artist,” Hancock said. “It’s a nice time because people are interested in knowing more about her. It’s a nice vehicle for the Latinx community for audience members. Her life is very dramatic. She turned her pain and misfortune into creativity. For a Mexican woman at the time, her art was jarring and surprising to people. She was married to Diego Rivera and involved with the Communist Party.” Hancock said the process involves a lot of waiting and meeting with people. “We have some meetings set in New York. Nothing concrete yet,” he said. PBS filmed the musical and broadcast it twice in 2016. Hancock is the composer, co-lyricist, costume designer, choreographer, director and producer of the show. Stars align for spring break

Plan the fish fry

Commentary by Danielle Wilson

Commentary by Terry Anker College towns win big. The local economy benefits from the higher-than-average per capita spending of students (and their benefactors – parents and taxpayers). Small-town communities that host significant campuses have seen property values and incomes surge even as peer cities without the industrial locus of higher-ed have almost universally stumbled. Moreover, these places tend to see increased levels of education attainment. As the adage goes, folks are being taught to fish rather than being given a fish. The longterm civic advantage of a well-educated population is thoroughly documented and acknowledged. Indiana State Sen. Luke Kenley has offered a budget amendment to include capital investments into the campuses of Ivy Tech Community College to the tune of $40.2 million for Kokomo and $38.7 million for Muncie. Although not part of our own central Indiana region, it can only serve our larger community. The Kokomo facility was decimated by a tornado this past August. Were it not for the Herculean effort made by students and staff, no learning would be occurring. As to Muncie, it, like all good things, has been a victim of its own success. Thousands of high-paying Indiana jobs go unfilled because Hoosiers cannot access the instruction required to meet demand. Investment in Ivy Tech will reap benefits far in excess of the expense for many years to come. Although there are numerous demands on taxpayers, investments in infrastructure, education and other areas that teach people to fish makes sense. Let’s plan the fish fry.

REA D ER ’ S V I EW

Every vote counts May 2 Editor, Welcome back from spring break! Only six weeks left until the end of yet another successful school year. Our students and staff have certainly earned the summer respite for all the long hours spent fulfilling the district’s vision to experience excellence, explore opportunities and realize potential. However, the sad truth is, hundreds of our finest staff members may not return to our buildings this fall. That is because the Carmel Clay School district’s 2010 operational referendum is set to expire Dec. 31. It currently provides the district with $14.5 million annually. Without it, we stand to lose at least 260 jobs, academic programs not required for graduation and valuable extracurricular programs. Many ask, “how did we get here?” Changes in school funding in 2009 cost our school district millions of dollars. The cut was so deep, in fact, that Carmel Clay Schools now receives the second-lowest per pupil funding of any school district in the state — to the tune of $786 less per child. Our current referendum fills that gap. Unfortunately, Indiana has essentially become a referendum state, where

school districts are forced to pass referenda for a workable amount of funding, especially in communities with highperforming schools. In fact, all but one of the five school districts in Hamilton County has passed similar operational referendums. The referendum we are asking Carmel voters to replace will not allow us to do anything new. It will simply allow us to maintain what we do best. For the same school tax rate that you are currently paying, we will be able to keep our best and brightest employees and preserve the stellar academic and extracurricular programs the community has come to expect. I’ve spoken with city leaders, business owners, staff and parents, and the sentiment is the same. Strong schools equal a strong community. While there seems to be an early groundswell of support for the referendum, we cannot take its passage for granted. Simply put — every vote counts. We have 16,000 reasons to get this right. So please mark your calendars for the Special Election May 2 — and vote yes for each and every student who is, or someday will become, a Greyhound. Nicholas D. Wahl, superintendent of Carmel Clay Schools

I made it! I survived a 15-hour car ride through the night that included, but was not limited to, stream-ofhumor consciousness, high-volume diatribes from three teenagers; the constant threat of severe weather; an honest-to-God highway collapse; and a very early morning rendezvous with my husband Doo at the Atlanta airport car rental drop-off. I credit a poorly-made CD of “The Sound of Music” and the promise of sand and sleep for this miraculous feat of driving. Go, me! Yes, friends, for the first time in five years, I am enjoying a spring break vacation with my beloved family (actually, I am missing one child, as she is a member of a militant color guard team and was denied leave. I did consider staying to support her at their national competition, but after about three seconds, opted for vacay). Usually, because I teach in a neighboring school district with a different calendar, I’ve wallowed in Midwest self-pity while they frolic along Floridian beaches. But thanks to a unique alignment of Jupiter and Mars, we had the same week off in April. Woo-hoo! So here I am, two days post-drive, feeling almost like myself again. I’ve slept for 10 hours both nights, already had my coralpainted toes in the Gulf, and unlike Doo and Boy Twin, have successfully avoided Fifth Disease-esque sunburn. And yesterday (gulp), we ate a real dinner, (tear) at a real table, (full-on weeping), all together! Because that is what family vacation is all about - spending time with each other sans the distractions of the daily grind. Re-establishing connections that have been pushed by the wayside. And laughing at my terrible rendition of “Edelweiss” while making fun of Doo’s splotchy red chest. Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a contributing columnist. In favor of increased cigarette tax Editor, Every week we hear stories about someone overdosing on heroin. It is turning into an epidemic, and I am glad that our lawmakers are serious about tackling the problem. Approximately 95 percent of people who are treated for addiction to opioids also are addicted to cigarettes. If we can help people fight the addiction to cigarettes, or even better, never become addicted to begin with, we will save them from a lifetime of chronic diseases and reduce their risk

for abusing other drugs. That is why I am in favor of the “Raise It For Health” campaign to raise the cigarette tax by $1.50 per pack and increase funding for tobacco prevention and cessation programs. Again, I applaud our lawmakers for wanting to tackle the drug problem, and let’s keep our children drug-free by increasing the cigarette tax by $1.50. George L. Kristo, Executive director Hamilton County Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs

Humor: Roundabouts threaten cakes Editor, The National Wedding Cake Coalition, the nation’s most prominent and powerful baked-goods advocacy group and cakebased organization, announced its strong and committed opposition to the many, many traffic roundabouts in the affluent suburb of Carmel, citing cake safety as a major concern. Group spokesman Farce Stoker states, “These roundabouts, which seem to be increasing in number, may save human lives, but they represent the single greatest threat to wedding cakes in the entire state of Indiana and possibly even the whole Great Lakes Region. We’ve lost 13 cakes this month alone as drivers take the turns on those suckers and the cakes topple right the heck over.” Statistics provided by the National Cake and Donut Safety Board, the government watchdog group in charge of baked confection safety, show a sharp rise in cake fatalities since 2014, when Carmel began

accelerating roundabout installation. “It’s like a war zone out there for cakes. It’s literally cake hell. It’s a cake-tastrophe. I really can’t over-hyperbolize it enough. Cakes are dying by the dozens and we feel we must do something to raise awareness and end the doughy, crème-filled carnage,” Stoker said. “City of Carmel – you have to do something. This just can’t go on. Our cake delivery drivers are in very real danger of an enraged bride hauling off and beating them with her tiara. “ The National Wedding Cake Coalition plans on joining forces with sister organizations the Very Full Grocery Bag Foundation and the Hastily Piled Stack of Books Association and petitioning the city of Carmel to either allow drone delivery of wedding cakes, or replace all the roundabouts (many of which are not even round, but really more peanut-shaped) with traffic signals. Costco has never been hijacked Commentary by Dick Wolfsie My Costco cart was laden with soft drinks, garbage bags, a snow tire and a year’s supply of salsa. I was humor in a good mood because I had managed to circle around several demo tables and inhale a dozen different offerings without being fingered as a “repeat sampler.” The employee at the exit door looked me over head to toe. He was holding something behind his back. Could it have been some kind of breath-analyzer to detect whether I had eaten too much free food? He asked me for my receipt but never actually looked in my cart; he just peered at my list of purchases and then at me, which I think is considered facial profiling. Suddenly, he whipped out a yellow highlighter. Would I soon receive that sought-after stripe that squiggles down the list and shows that you have truly arrived? Actually, it shows that you have truly left. OK, so what’s that stripe really for? No one checks your items. You could have murdered the lady behind the lunch counter for taking too long to serve your pizza, stuffed her on the bottom rack of the cart next

to a 12-pack of Coors Light and you’d still proudly make your way to the parking lot with a yellow stripe on that receipt. Truth is, the precautionary measures at Costco are far better than at the airport. Recently, I handed a gate agent my ticket, showed her two pieces of ID, took off my shoes and was herded through a metal detector. “You call that security?” I asked the agent. “Why don’t you guys put a yellow stripe down my ticket like they do at Costco?” “Why do they do that, sir?” “I have no idea, but they are very meticulous about it and everyone gets free quiche and egg rolls.” I’m going to write a letter to the TSA recommending they adopt the Costco approach to security. They may think this is a stupid idea, but here’s the truth: At the Costco on 86th in Castleton, there has never been a hijacking.

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com Attitudes, action and faith are important to Scott Beck, president of Beck’s Hybrids. “Attitude and work ethic play HCLA an important role in what we do and how we get along,” Beck said at the March 23 Hamilton County Leadership Academy’s community storyteller event at Beck’s hangar at the Indianapolis Executive Airport in Zionsville. Beck’s Hybrids was created in 1937 when Lawrence Beck and his son, Francis, planted a three-acre portion of hybrid parent seed corn on their farm in Hamilton County. Eighty years later, it is the largest familyowned seed company in the U.S., serving farmers in nine states. Scott Beck became president in March of 2015 after his father decided it was time to pass the torch. Although they are family, Scott admits they have different leadership styles. He leans more toward the inspirational approach and is driven by responsibility, while his father liked to be in charge. However, they do agree on the company’s culture. About eight years ago they collaborated with a group of employees to pinpoint who they were as a business. This led

to Attitudes and Actions, which includes teamwork, integrity, innovation, adaptability, commitment and passion. “Those weren’t things that were aspirational goals,” Scott Beck said. “Those were things that really described who we were as people in our business.” They created a recognition program as well, where employees can acknowledge coworkers for their actions through an online system to foster that culture. Regardless of your current level of physical activity, the idea of running a marathon shouldn’t scare you. But it’s a process. The key is to start fitness small and work your way toward endurance very gradually — and by gradually, I mean at least a year or more. For those who are not so active, it’s a good idea to consult your primary care provider before beginning any new exercise program. Having said that, a good starting point would be to walk 10 to 15 minutes, three days a week. This may take several weeks, but when you do feel energized enough to up your routine, try brisk walking for 30 minutes, five days a week. The next step is to incorporate running. Combine a walking/running routine for a few more weeks before you increase distance and endurance. Then gradually build up to a weekly long run, from 10 to 15 miles per week at a slower pace that lets your body adjust. On rest days, keep

moving, whether it’s a casual walk, swim or bike ride. Endurance is about building distance rather than speed, and eventually you could be running 20 or so miles per week. The right shoes Yes, you really need to invest in proper running shoes. Consultants at a specialty running store, such as BlueMile, will put you on a treadmill to analyze your gait and stride to recommend the best shoe for you. No matter where you shop, expect to invest at least $100 in a pair of shoes and replace them as soon as the tread shows signs of wear. One more note: Don’t buy brand new shoes for race day. Wear the type and brand of shoes you trained in, and break them in a few weeks beforehand. For more, visit currentincarmel.com.

‘Power Rangers: Zenith’ showcases Indiana actors, Carmel scenery By Sara Balwin editorial@youarecurrent.com A group of Indiana filmmakers is planning to shift Indiana’s film industry into overdrive with the next “Power film Rangers: Zenith,” a re-telling of the “Green With Evil” story arc from the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers universe. The film is slated for release in October 2018. Emmanuel Carter, cocreator for “Power Rangers: Zenith,” said the film was conceptualized at the beginning of 2015 and began filming at the end of 2016. Carter partnered Carter with a group of filmmakers in the Indianapolis area to bring the concept to life. “There is a veritable amount of talent here in Indiana,” Carter said. “We decided, look, we need to band together to make something that’s going to make a big splash. We chose ‘Power Rangers’ because it’s something that we love, and we saw the potential.” Among the Power Rangers team of Indiana natives is actor and writer Ransom Pugh, the co-creator for “Power Rangers: Zenith.” Pugh also co-stars in the film as the Red Ranger. Brandon Benz is taking on a dual role as director of photography and Blue Ranger. Actress Katie Harbridge will play the Pink Ranger and actress Ariel Noel plays the Yellow Ranger. “My team is a confluence of people who have worked with one another on other films,” Carter said. “It’s really hard to find people here because many don’t try to pursue film opportunities in Indiana. A lot of the talent moves out to other states with more work opportunities.” The Zenith team also banded together with even more film industry professionals to release a short film called “Catapult.” The film garnered support for Indiana House Bill 1219, which would establish the Indiana film and media production expenditure tax credit. “Catapult” advo-

cates that the bill would encourage the increase of job creation, the generation of tax revenue and increase Indiana tourism. Carter said the term “zenith,” meaning the time at which something is most powerful or successful, represents the power behind this coming-of-age story. “Zenith” takes place right after the Power Rangers reach teen-hood. “It’s very raw and new,” Carter said. “They are trying to balance life as superheroes and life as teenagers. We wanted to show that anybody can rise up and take a stand.” Many gender and racial stereotypes have been turned on their head in this Power Rangers interpretation. Kimberly, the Pink Ranger, was traditionally stereotyped as a hyper-feminine, ditzy cheerleader. In “Zenith,” she is is portrayed as an intrepid and intelligent young woman. “Because we are trying to stick so close to the blueprint of the original show, we kept the rangers with their original colors.

But we changed their personalities a bit,” Carter said. Zach, the Black Ranger, could dance and rap but was not a good student in the original series. “It’s sad, because you’re painting that picture for an entire generation,” Carter said. “You’re not bound to your race. Instead of making the black ranger the ‘hip hop one,’ he is not athletic (in “Zenith”). He comes from a wealthy family but is still humble.” Carter, a Carmel resident and Indianapolis native, said that much of “Zenith”has been filmed in Carmel. “The city of Carmel has been really dope to us when filming this project,” Carter said. “Carmel has so many beautiful locations. It will be cool to showcase that on such a big platform.” For more information and to follow the making of “Power Rangers: Zenith,” visit facebook.com/PowerRangersZenith.

The musical made its Broadway debut in 1950, and the movie featuring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra was made in 1955. Yet, that isn’t the toughest challenge for director Nicole Johnson. “The biggest challenge has been it’s one of the first shows we’ve done that all of the cast is playing adult roles,” said Johnson, Creekside’s director of choirs. “Trying to get them to fall in love and show that kind of romance on stage is tough for them. But they’ve done an awesome job.” A fun challenge is having the students imitate New York accents, Johnson said. Creekside will perform “Guys and Dolls” at 7 p.m. April 20, 21 and 22 at the school auditorium. Jack Ducat plays gambler Nicely-Nicely Johnson. “He’s funny and he likes to eat all the

“MOTOWN The Musical” rolled into Indianapolis and Where’s Amy scored an exclusive photo shoot with Indiana native Broadway stars Chester Gregory (Gary) and Raymond Davis Jr. (Indianapolis). Gregory and Davis Jr., shined in their roles and said it was an honor to be back home in Indiana to perform at the iconic Murat Old National Centre. The story revolves around the life of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to heavyweight music mogul. Helaunched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. The songs of Motown brought the world together and made us all move to the same beat. I loved running into the fabulous Daniel Klingler (Indianapolis), who designed several wigs and hairpieces for the Broadway production. The actors and stage sparkled as everyone in the audience, young and old, participated in song, dance and, of course, rockin’ out with our ABCs! If you missed this sensational show, don’t worry. Donatello’s to host fundraiser editorial@youarecurrent.com

Donatello’s Italian Restaurant in the Carmel Arts & District is hosting a wine dinner April 27 to benefit the Cheetah Conservation Fund of Indiana, a restaurants newly formed statewide chapter to help protect and conserve this threatened African cat. Tickets are $95 per person and include tax, tip and a donation to the group. The event starts at 6:15 p.m. and includes six dishes paired with six wines. Chef Patrick Aasen will prepare specialties such as sautéed calamari, scallops and shrimp, a linguini with braised rib eye, crumbles of gorgonzola cheese and a light sauce, and chicken francese, which has a sauce of lemon, butter and capers. Nicole Phillips, a CPA who lives in Carmel and graduated from Carmel High School, volunteers with the cheetahs at the Indianapolis Zoo in her spare time. “Everyone knows that cheetahs are the fastest land mammals, but not everyone knows their populations are rapidly declining,” Phillips said. “They’re beautiful creatures with great personalities, and it’s heartbreaking to know that their numbers are dwindling. I wanted to get involved, even though I live in Indiana.” Her love of the animals inspired her to become one of the founding members and treasurer of the Indiana chapter, along with teacher Ann Burke, of Bloomington, who serves as president, and zoo educator and artist Kristen Latzke, of Indianapolis, who serves as secretary. The group, which is less than a year old, has two goals: Spread awareness about the cheetah’s fight against extinction and to raise money for the Cheetah Conservation Fund’s international organization. The CCF is the world’s leading organization dedicated to saving the cheetah in the wild. All of its programs are rooted in scientific research, and it addresses the threats both to the cheetah and the entire ecosystem, including human populations. The event also will feature a silent auction with gift cards from local businesses, a gift bag from internet cat sensation Lil’ Bub, artwork and cheetah-related prizes. Tickets can be purchased by phone at 317-564-4790 or online at donatelloswinedinner.eventbrite.com. 3 steps to an incredible outdoor living space

Commentary by Randy Sorrell

If only it were that easy ... three steps. There are home improvement virtually hundreds of micro decisions that get vetted in the discovery/ design process that I have conveniently nestled in these three miraculous steps to guide the process. STORY Most importantly, tell us your story. How do you hope to use your new patio? Is it a place for you to escape after a long day at the office? Or a place where your family gathers to heal, create memories and celebrate life? What’s the size of a typical gathering? How do you entertain? Need space for a grill? What type of furniture? And the list continues. So, what’s your story? Let us know how you want it to feel. The more personal, the better. Let the emotions and stories flow and imagine how driven we become once we feel the connection. Imagine how compelled installation teams become when they realize the intent of the space. CONSIDERATIONS We all have “issues” that need addressed. Some are more critical than others. The range is diverse from creating shade, enhancing privacy and working with drainage. Budget always creeps into the conversation, as it should. What about easements, access, ease of steps for hip replacements and aging in-place thoughts. SHOW & TELL Gather pictures of outdoor spaces that evoke the imagined feel of your new space

and then let’s play “show and tell.” Amazing what we can discover by looking at pictures and talking through them. Houzz and Pinterest are wonderful tools. Welcome to your incredible outdoor living space, one that tells your story, answers your considerations and creates the vibe you’ve always dreamed of!

Dispatches Designer workshop series — The public is invited to connect with design professionals each month on various interior design topics. Join us for Master the Art of Small Space Design at 10:30 a.m. April 18 at the Indiana Design Center, 200 S. Range Line Rd. Light refreshments will be provided. Instead of plastic — If you want environmentally friendly ways to store food there are alternatives to plastic bags and containers: 1. Cover open bowls with a plate rather than plastic wrap. 2. Anchor or Pyrex glass containers – these can go straight from fridge to

oven. 3. Food grade silicon - another material that can go from fridge to oven, and it’s kid-friendly, too. Heat the vinegar and put in a spray bottle. Add the Dawn and shake. Spray on surface and let stand one hour before rinsing off. Source: geekmom.com

Blueprint for Improvement: Stunning laundry transformation Commentary by Larry Greene

After solutions:

After

Before Background Info: These owners reside in the Geist-area Anchorage neighborhood in Fishers. They knew they wanted to update their laundry and adjacent powder bath spaces but did not really know where to start.

Before problems: The previous laundry room did not inspire the already tedious task of laundry for this busy family. The builder-grade cabinetry and outdated laminate flooring needed a fresh update in aesthetics and functionality. With the powder bath in proximity to the laundry room, the owners wanted the two spaces to coordinate and update the outdated finishes to reflect their style.

LEGAL NOTICE OF DUKE ENERGY INDIANA, LLC’S STANDARD CONTRACT RIDER NO. 67 CREDITS TO REMOVE ANNUAL AMORTIZATION OF CINERGY MERGER COSTS DUKE ENERGY INDIANA, LLC (“Duke Energy Indiana”) hereby provides notice that on April 18, 2017, Duke Energy Indiana will submit its Standard Contract Rider No. 67, Credits to Remove Annual Amortization of Cinergy Merger Costs (“Standard Contract Rider 67”) to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (“Commission”) for approval under the Commission’s thirty-day administrative filing procedures and guidelines. Standard Contract Rider 67 provides the adjustment to rates to remove the amortization of the costs associated with the Cinergy Corp. merger. Standard Contract Rider 67 is applicable to all Duke Energy Indiana retail electric customers and will be deemed approved thirty-days from the date of its filing on April 18, 2017, unless an objection is made. Any objections may be made by contacting the Secretary of the Commission, or Tyler Bolinger or Randall C. Helmen of the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor at the following addresses or phone numbers: Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission 101 W. Washington St. Suite 1500 East Indianapolis, IN 46204-3407 317-232-2703 Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor PNC Center 115 W. Washington St. Suite 1500 South Indianapolis, IN 46204 317-232-2494. Duke Energy Indiana, LLC By: Melody Birmingham-Byrd, President

The goal for these areas was to improve functionality, update the aesthetics to the homeowners’ preferred style and strategically design the aesthetics to feel continuous throughout both spaces. 1. The washer and dryer appliances were stacked, creating more space for functional storage and work space. New cabinets and granite countertops were designed to maximize functionality. One of the cabinets even doubles as a trash can and a clothes hamper. 2. A small drop-zone for shoes, coats and bags was incorporated into the design as well. 3. In the adjacent powder bath, a new vanity, champagne bronze plumbing fixtures and a mesmerizing light fixture add a beautiful elegance to that space. The new cabinetry stain color in the powder bath matches the color in the laundry room. 4. For an added aesthetic that ties into other elements in the home, a reclaimed wood accent wall was installed and stained to coordinate with both the new cabinet color and the existing floor.
