Government’s nose in the kids’ business Truth: We offer paid and unpaid internships to a select number of college students each year, because we want them to experience the editorial model by which we produce these newspapers. We’re trying to shape the future of community journalism, one intern at a time. Unemployment among those in the internship-age pool is at 16 percent. If we can do anything to help those get into the industry on solid footing, we certainly will do so. The U.S. Labor Department couldn’t possibly care less that we still consider ourselves a startup. It wants to force us, and the rest of the domestic business arena, to pay the unpaid as we do the others. We can’t do that on our budget – and unlike the federal government, we stick to the conventions of our financial plan. We actually believed the feds

would appreciate us trying to help the unpaid privilege, and we need new blood to show interns at least get a leg up as they prepare that. Sadly, it could come down to campaign to enter the job market. How Labor’s mesfinancing, and Burton has a stash. We all need family bonding time was seated in the far rear seat of the family truckster en route to a far-away beach destination. His only company was our crated five-month-old puppy, Rex. Much to the consternation of both (dog and owner), the trip was not proceeding well. Our vet is fond of saying that dogs express stress though their gastro-intestinal systems. Suffice it to say, this outing convinced us of that fact. But on this trip, in spite of considerable agitation, our eldest calmly and without fanfare worked to clean what was undoubtedly a dirty carrier and dog – several times – and, putting aside his own discomfort, tried to calm the pet. It led to a good conversation about the care and feeding of human babies. Without hours together, we would have missed it – and that made the drive worthwhile. COMMENTARY By Terry Anker Each time we travel together on a family vacation, we learn something about each other. That, perhaps more than any other reason, is why we continue to make the effort to take them. It is certainly not without difficulty that we travel with generations ranging from Grandma to grade school (do we shop at outlets or go race gocarts?). But with some effort and empathy, we manage to find middle ground. Maybe it is precisely the time that passes between them that makes them magical. Each year, so much has changed. Children mature, and adults transform at a rate seldom noticed on an hourly interval. But when measured in months, the differences are brought into high contrast. Among the many wonderful things that came to light in this family jaunt was the budding compassion of our eldest. Long suffering from a stomach prone to reaction brought on by strong odors and all things “gross,” he barely survived the diaper stage for his younger brother. But on this trip, he

Don’t be saddened by Bar Louie’s abrupt closing Editor: I actually laughed out loud when I read the April 6 article about the closing of Bar Louie (“Bar Louie abruptly closes”). Good riddance! I am overjoyed to see this establishment finally shut down. A little background information: Bar Louie originally opened in Clay Terrace as the Red Star Tavern, and my husband was the chef. His first “assignment” was to drive with a few of the other new managers to a Red Star Tavern location in Omaha, Neb. to shut the restaurant down just two days before Christmas. The employees had no idea what was happening until my husband and the others arrived

with a moving van to clean out the restaurant of equipment and supplies to be used for the location in Carmel. You hit the nail on the head with your assessment that this is “pathetic” (“From the Backshop,” April 6). I am happy to see them go. This is a company of questionable business practices, unworthy of our patronage. I am saddened that so many folks are now out of work and will find it challenging to find work in the restaurant industry. That is the tragedy here. Amy Patton Carmel

OUR VIEWS

It is our position that we Americans should remember to make the display of our national flag an important part of our summer ritual. As Butler Bulldogs signage is still hanging in shop windows around town, we are reminded that Old Glory is all-too-often neglected in our collective “brand identity.” Shouldn’t we all include an American flag as a part if the plan for our offices and homes? Yet many of us, even when we are happy to hoist a banner for a local sports team, neglect the colors of our country. Certainly the lack of a flag prominently displayed does not necessarily correspond with a failure of patriotism. But it does imply a lack of attention to the matter. When national holidays loom or an international crisis brews, we remember the home team. But this year, we should work to make flag display and presentation a part of our spring cleaning and preparation. Reminders of America cannot be confined to date-specific retail holidays. Consider a flagpole and appropriate lighting when working on a landscape plan. Consider the Stars & Stripes when decorating an office. It is always in good taste. And it is always the right thing to do.

Stand and be counted

It is our position that, in the words of a famed Hoosier poet and singer, you’ve got to stand for something or you will fall for anything. Many credit Seymour, Ind. native John “Cougar” Mellencamp for bringing that truism into pithy light. Others debate the specific origins of the phrase. (We like Peter Marshall, a U.S. Senate Chaplain during WWII, for praying, “Give to us clear vision that we may know where to stand and what to stand for, because unless we stand for something, we shall fall for anything.”) Today, we are locked in debate between often conflicting desires to protect liberty and provide for the weak. The important message, whether from an ‘80s rocker or ‘40s bureaucrat, is that we must express our view. Routinely, we decide our own unworthiness to cast a vote. Driven by a lack of data or understanding, we simply “give” our vote to those who have bothered to become informed. Well, now is our chance. The spring election remains weeks away. Read about candidates. Check out their Web sites. Call them if you have time. But we must become informed and vote.

Carmel resident Will Austin’s organization provides transportation to those who can’t afford it By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel Operating out of a self-storage garage and a small office in Indianapolis, a nonprofit organization Austin started by a Carmel resident is addressing transportation needs around the world. Carmel’s Will Austin started the Institute of Affordable Transportation 10 years ago, bouncing around borrowed and donated office space in Carmel and Indianapolis before IAT landed at its current home near 71st Street. The organization essentially has one goal: to provide efficient and affordable transportation to areas that don’t have, but desperately need it. The easiest way to do this, Austin found, was to create a new type of vehicle. Austin’s criteria for a suitable vehicle essentially eliminated anything else on the market. Anything IAT ships overseas needs to be fuel efficient, carry a lot of weight, traverse rugged terrains and be easy to operate – all for under $3,000. IAT’s solution was to create what it has termed a Basic Utility Vehicle (BUV), which is typically little more than a salvaged Chevrolet S-10 frame underneath a bed of treated deck boards, a small diesel engine and a simple, custom-made front end. The ultra-light vehicle is slow but has a 1,200-pound payload. With 95 percent fewer parts than a typical vehicle, it can be maintained by nearly anyone, anywhere. “We’re trying to help people help themselves,” Austin said. “We want to be focused on providing sustainable solutions.”

Mike Pratt, another Carmel resident and a BUV Ministry board member, said IAT has provided roughly 100 vehicles to villages in 19 countries. But not all of those 100 vehicles are the same. Because the vehicles are made to order, variations of the BUV can be made depending on the vehicle’s use. Specialty vehicles include ones intended to be primarily used as farm and irrigation equipment, ambulances, school buses and dump trucks, among others. Not only does the BUV provide reliable transportation and make work easier, it can also generate revenue. While some BUVs need to be assembled by hired hands upon arrival, nearly all provide multiple jobs to their users when up and running. Most commonly, BUVs are used as taxis and delivery vehicles. Regardless of its use, Pratt said a BUV is intended to raise the quality of life for people in developing nations much like the way the automobile’s introduction improved life in the United States nearly a century earlier. “What the Model T did for transportation in America, we’re trying to do in third-world countries,” Pratt said. Most BUVs are purchased by private donors and churches, with a suggested retail price of about $3,000 apiece. The organization or individual purchasing a vehicle, Austin said, usually is doing so to provide it for a friend working overseas

Each year, college students are challenged to design and build their own Basic Utility Vehicles for a competition at Purdue University. The vehicles are tested through various courses carrying significant weight, with the creators of the best design winning a prize. This year’s competition is April 17 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 3940 W. 121st St. in Zionsville.

as a missionary. For both the missionary and the village, Austin said the donation provides so much more than a simple check. “We’re supporting the people on the front lines,” he said. “People want to do something that’s more than just giving money. They want to give something that keeps on giving.” Austin himself has donated all his time to these efforts, building and shipping BUVs as his full-time job. Now a decade old with a small staff and permanent location, Austin’s organization is poised to continue growing and expanding its influence to more countries around the world. But the idea to start IAT, he said, came in an instant. “The Lord just laid it on my heart one day,” he said.

Improving through competition

Basic Utility vehicles have an average payload of 1,200 pounds, but with a much smaller engine and a third of the weight of most pickups, they’re much more fuel efficient. The diesel-fueled BUV can get up to 50 miles per gallon on pavement, according to a 2008 test performed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Commentary By Danielle Wilson You know what absolutely drives me crazy? When my kids complain about how their siblings or friends aren’t playing nice: “My brother called me stupid!” “My sister hit me!” “My best friend is being mean!” It’s become so common around our house that, barring blood or the use of the “F” word, my husband and I have declared a moratorium on parental intervention. “Don’t be a victim!” we cry. In other words, stick up for yourself and don’t let others take advantage of you. And for the love of Diet Coke, stop expecting Mommy and Daddy to fight your battles! The first time we took this approach was when our oldest was around five. His BFF was a little older and a bit bigger. Our son used to come home in tears after being bullied. We were certain his friend wasn’t intending to hurt him, but just didn’t know his own strength or our son’s sensitive nature. He was five also, for goodness’ sake. So we told our son the next time his friend hit him to punch him back as hard as he could. And guess what? They’ve been best friends ever since and we’ve never had another incident. It seems that as soon as his friend realized he couldn’t push our son around without getting himself hurt, bullying wasn’t worth it. Both our boys have done pretty well with the “Don’t be a victim” approach, but we haven’t had as much luck with our daughters – could be the natural tendencies of girls and boys, or maybe just their personalities. Regardless, our girls continue to run to us for a ruling and sentencing rather than handle it on their own. But now when my youngest comes crying about how her butthole sister just hijacked her favorite skirt, we listen politely and then say, “Don’t be a victim, Maddie! Go get that skirt back!” And she does.

I think my older daughter is struggling because she’s receiving mixed messages. Her elementary school has been drilling students with the “no fighting” rule pretty hard over the last few months. Contrary to what we say, she’s supposed to find an adult if she gets hit or called a name. And I do agree with this rule in most circumstances. But if a teacher or a parent isn’t around, I believe she has the right to defend herself. If somebody pushes her down, I expect her to fight back. If someone calls her a name, I hope she returns a zinger. Basically, I want my daughter to have the confidence of knowing she can handle situations on her own and that she’s strong enough, emotionally and physically, to stand up to bullies. Because the reality is, there won’t always be someone to save her. Since our Don’t Be a Victim campaign commenced, we’ve noticed a few unexpected results. For one, our kids have begun accepting responsibility for their own roles in confrontations. Without Mom and Dad around, they’re forced to consider how their actions contributed to that retaliatory slap or name-calling and they think twice before prolonging the conflict. Our kids are also figuring out that fighting back proves more of a deterrent than tattle-tailing, and that working it out amongst themselves is more beneficial to everyone in the long run. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” If we can get our kids to believe that, to know that they don’t have to be victims, then I think we’ll have done a good job as parents. Peace out.

Sexual-assault victim to share horrors and advice in Prevail-sponsored event By Martha Allan Current in Carmel At 17, Angela Rose was abducted at knifepoint in the parking lot of a suburban Chicago shopping mall, where she worked. She was sexually assaulted, then released. Rose “People have an idea in their minds of how people should respond to going through something like that,” said Rose, now 31 and the executive director of PAVE – Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment – which she founded in 2001. “Everybody reacts differently and people need to realize that there’s a whole spectrum of emotions that people go through. Obviously, not everyone is going to react the same way.” In her presentation, “Fairness, Dignity, Respect,” Rose will talk about sexual violence to parents and teens at Carmel High School from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on April 20. Her appearance is sponsored by Prevail, a Noblesville-based organization for Hamilton County, during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. The program is free and open to the public.

If you go … What: Angel Rose: “Fairness, Dignity, Respect.” When: 7-8:30 p.m., April 20. Where: Carmel High School cafeteria, 520 E. Main St., Carmel. Admission: Free.

The topic is particularly timely in light of an alleged February hazing incident involving three Carmel High School basketball players aboard a school bus carrying them back from a game. Carmel police released a report Feb. 22 on the allegations against the players, which included assault and criminal deviate conduct — a sex crime. The case is still under investigation by Carmel police. Rose said one of the biggest issues is the pervasive silence that surrounds sexual violence, as well as the victim-blaming. Another is that men as well as women can be victims of sexual assault. “We know that one in four girls and one in six boys, before the age of 18, are going to be sexually abused,” she said. “We can’t choose what happens to us in life, but we can certainly choose our response.”

English Tea to feature changes for 10th anniversary By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel The Carmel Arts Council’s annual afternoon of elegance is approaching a milestone anniversary, but this year’s event will feature a notable change. Each year, the Arts Council’s English Silver Tea event provides four $1,500 scholarships to college-bound students skilled in the arts. One student will be awarded a scholarship for his or her abilities in the following areas: piano, creative writing, visual arts and performing arts. This year, however, those four students will be introduced to those in attendance for the first time. So far, three of the four scholarship recipients have been decided, but these names will not be announced until all four winners are selected.

Doreen Squire Ficara, executive director for the council, said that the students are not required to major in the arts in college. They are merely being rewarded for their current abilities and achievements. “We know very well you can’t make a living in arts as soon as you leave school,” she said. “We hope that they all continue in a minor way.” The English Tea will be held May 13 at The Ritz Charles. The event will last from 2 to 5:30 p.m., and tea will be served earlier than usual, leaving time for the scholarship recipients to be presented. Individual tickets and sponsor tables are still available, and those interested in attendhing can email Ficara at dsfcarmelarts@yahoo. com.

Carmel corporate employees ‘step up’ COMMENTARY By Jeff Worrell Week after week, I try to shine a little light on your friends and neighbors who are doing good work for others – the people who identify a need and take action. The breed of people who “step up” and make things happen. “Step Up” might sound familiar, as it is the commercial tagline used by our local insurance company and good corporate citizen, Conseco. This year, for the first time, the company took the Step Up concept and turned it into an awards program to recognize employee volunteers who give of their time and energy to their community. Partnering with national volunteer organization Jefferson Awards for Public Service, Conseco recognized seven people from the United States, with four honorees coming from the Carmel office. Jo St. John was the overall award winner out of the seven honorees. She directs her positive energy toward Newborns in Need. Her group provides needed essentials for babies during the first 30-60 days of life to ensure they have strong and healthy starts. Jo has been a volunteer there since 2001 and now serves as president of the Indianapolis-area chapter. Her chapter is now serving 150 families per month, having secured more than 200,000 items for needy babies. Donna Lewellen and John Reid give their precious spare time working on behalf of

the American Red Cross. Donna is on call 24/7 to respond to any disaster in the greater Indianapolis area, providing food, shelter, clothing and basic health care, plus emotional support when needed. In 2009, John Reid logged more than 570 volunteer hours serving the Hamilton County Disaster Action Team providing first aid and support at major outdoor events. The fourth honoree from the Carmel branch is Paul Richard. He works for the Arthritis Foundation as the chairman of the Jingle Bell Run Team in 2008 and 2009. Under Paul’s leadership, Conseco’s team ranked in the top 25 fundraising teams in the nation, while at the same time serving as a member of the event planning committee. Conseco CEO Jim Prieur said, “In 2009, Conseco employees donated more than 13,000 hours of volunteer service. The Step Up awards program honors their outstanding work as volunteers by offering up to $20,000 of annual cash grants to the community organizations where they volunteer.” Conseco employees certainly have done their part to “Step Up.” Will you? Carmel Symphony Orchestra the city’s best-kept secret COMMENTARY By Sue Finkam Seventy musicians gather approximately a dozen times a year to put on high-quality entertaining music for our community. Although the CSO draws capacity crowds at several of its classics or pops events, many Carmel-area residents are not familiar with the orchestra, its high artistic performance standards or its mission to educate youth about music and provide affordable symphonic concerts for our community. More than half of its 85 members are music educators and passionate about introducing youth to music. The CSO offers a Young Artist’s Competition and a special Family Fun Concert, where children and others young at heart are invited to sit on the stage with orchestra members to watch music being made right in front of their eyes. CSO members often hear that those unfamiliar with symphonic music feel intimidated to attend a concert or introduce their kids to the orchestra, feeling their enjoyment might be compromised by a lack of knowledge about orchestral music. However, those who are new to symphony orchestras don’t need to know

the composers, the instruments or the styles of music. They can just sit back and be enveloped by the music. A perfect opportunity to discover the joy of music presents itself April 17, as the CSO presents “Beethoven, Sibelius and Moyer,” featuring special guest Frederick Moyer. During more than 25 years as a full-time concert pianist, Moyer has established a vital musical career that has taken him to 41 countries and to such distant venues as Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Sydney Opera House and the Kennedy Center. Moyer’s enthusiasm, exacting artistry and adventurous programming have made him a favorite among audiences of all ages. Full disclosure: I’m a CSO board member. I welcome you to join us April 17 – and bring your children. Help us make a difference in our community through music education, as we celebrate the joy of the symphonic orchestra and the power of music to change lives.

White is making a comeback in home decorating Commentary By Vicky Early Just as it seemed the world of interior decorating was firmly ensconced in deep and vibrant colors, white is knocking at the front door. The white-on-white pallet, once reserved for summer homes and shabby chic décor, is stunning in bedrooms that demand a timeless, serene feel. White on white in living space offers a sleek glamour last visited in the days of old Hollywood. The secret to the beauty of white in these settings is layers. Layers of shades of white, combined with textures and contrasts, develop the architectural beauty of a room. Although true white falls in the realm of question when defining color theory, I am using it as a color in the decorating sense. In fact, there are countless versions of white created by the addition of a tiny amount of another tone, such as umber, black, red, yellow and blue. Because the goal is to create anything but a sterile environment, most whites will be dressed up with hints of tint. If the idea of your white being tainted by tint is concerning, keep in mind most designers actually consider white a tint, not a color, but for our purposes we’ll consider it a color and discuss the tints you can put into it. A white with a hint of blue can create a cold appearance. An antique white or one with a touch of yellow or brown provides a softer, warmer glow. Tints of gray give you a modern,

edgy feel that balances beautifully with stark white accessories or trim. If you are not comfortable with the concept of faint tints in white, visit a paint store and pick up a variety of white paint samples. Study the nuances and see if the you can begin to see the bare visible undertones of tints. The names provided by the paint manufacturer might give you a hint. Keep in mind that in layering your whites, the undertones will get stronger as the size of the piece increases. Umber undertones will flow with warm golden undertones, but pink-ish whites will scream if placed next to an antique that is yellow and umber. Just imagine what the more saturated versions of your tints would look like together, and work from there. While a total white-on-white room can be a masterpiece, decorating with white can be as simple as adding a few fresh white touches to your already finished room with the following suggestions.

White woodwork, trim, and wainscoting

look sparkly and new. If you want a real change, consider adding white crown molding for added eye appeal.

White furniture

One of my most versatile pieces of furniture ever was a white upholstered sofa. When soil showed its dirty face, I would simply clean it with a mild solution of detergent and water. It probably looked good for about 6-7 years, and then it was relegated to a bedroom.

White accessories

Accessories can be anything added to a space that provides interest and texture. My favorite is white is rich pottery, while iridescent white glass provides a luminous quality to a space. White is best used in collections – it is a bit too much of a contrast when placed with strong tones. White dinnerware can function in this way, as well, adding a classy richness to the décor. Could white be the new black? Probably not, but this serene color option is poised for a welcome comeback.

The popularity of white trim waxes and wanes with the years, but it’s still the freshest and cleanest look around. A quick touch-up every few years, and your woodwork will always

Moisture level of skin is not determined by internal factors, but rather external ones, such as cold or hot air, dry heat and by the number of oil-producing glands you have. Ready to graduate from grammar school? COMMENTARY By Brandie Bohney I had an interesting question pass through my e-mail inbox recently. And because we’re rapidly approaching the season of graduations, I thought I would present it now before anyone trips up the steps on the way to receiving a diploma or degree. The question deals with the verb form of graduate: “Is it correct to say, ‘he graduated high school’ or ‘he graduated from high school’?” I’ve heard the statement made both ways. And almost certainly one of the two forms sounds horribly incorrect to you. Most grammarians would not find graduated high school acceptable, but you’ll find the use of it that way in many dictionaries. Often with a usage note. Still, that creates some confusion. And it’s completely acceptable to say a high school graduated 450 students in 2007. So why can a high school graduate students, but a student can’t graduate high school? The answer lies in the tricky world of transitive and intransitive verbs. Intransitive verbs do not – and cannot – take direct objects, and they cannot be written in passive voice. Transitive verbs must take direct object and can be used in passive voice. Graduate is one of those crazy verbs that can used both transitively and intransitively. Here’s the trick to determine whether your verb (in this case, graduate) is transitive or in-

transitive: End the sentence without any words following the verb. If it makes sense, the verb is intransitive. If not, you need an object, and the verb is transitive. For example, Marie graduated makes sense all by itself. On the other hand, Butler University graduated does not. To make the Butler sentence logical, you need to say who or what the university bestowed degrees upon. In Marie’s case, we know by the use of the verb that a degree was bestowed upon her. Therefore, the verb is intransitive and following it directly with a noun, such as high school, would give it a direct object, making the verb transitive, and changing the meaning of the sentence. I’m pretty sure Marie didn’t grant a diploma to her high school, aren’t you? Now, just to further muddy the waters, it’s acceptable by most standards to say that Marie was graduated from high school. That’s a passive construction, so Marie isn’t actually doing the action; someone or something else is acting upon her. But since we almost certainly want to focus on Marie’s accomplishments as the graduate, it’s best to just say she graduated from high school. The real problem is determining who is doing what in the sentence. Brandie Bohney is a grammar enthusiast and former English teacher. If you have a grammarrelated question, please email her at bbthegrammarguru@gmail.com.

Fair fighting is important both for parents and children COMMENTARY By Becky Kapsalis Whenever two adults live together and there are children involved, one can almost be assured there will be a difference of opinion on the application of rules. Remember, we’re coming from different upbringings. We either like the way we were raised and raise our kids accordingly or we are upset with the way we were raised and do the opposite. And at the same time, our partner is processing similar attributes – hence the battleground for divisive disagreements where there are no winners. John Bradshaw’s “The Family” lists 10 rules for fair fighting (if there is such a thing) to develop better structure for ourselves as we offer better structure for our children when we choose to disagree. I’ve paraphrased Bradshaw’s list of rules. They are to be read and absorbed by both parties before the fair fighting begins. Most successes come from good preparation. Fair fighting with your spouse is no exception. Practicing these 10 rules together before the fight helps find mutual agreement while avoiding power struggles, egocentric outbursts and coercive battles. (That’s what truly takes place when we disruptively disagree). The emotional balances of our children

is at stake, and, believe me, they are listening and learning. Here than are the 10 rules to practice: 1. Be assertive (confident), not aggressive (ready to attack) 2. Avoid using past histories as weapons of righteousness. 3. Avoid lecturing. Stick to the issue at hand. 4. Avoid making judgments or excuses. 5. Avoid making comparisons. 6. Be thoroughly honest. 7. Avoid arguing over details. 8. Argue about one issue at a time. 9. Work on a solution, not who’s right. 10. Avoid all personal verbal and physical assaults. Discuss these 10 rules and work on them together ONE AT A TIME. They are in no particular order, and there may be some I haven’t addressed. Feel free to add your own and practice, practice, practice fair fighting. Hugs! Becky Kapsalis. aka YiaYia (pronounced Ya-Ya.) is a certified parenting advocate and child behavior coach. Treat your knives right and they can last a lifetime COMMENTARY By Chef Michael Vlasich Not many things are more awkward than trying to use a knife you are not comfortable with – or using it for the wrong job. I’m often asked, “What knife is for what use, and how do I care for them so they are sharp and ready to use?” Most households used to have only two or three knives, but, like everything else, bigger is better and more is well … more. For all those questions, here are some answers: • Paring knife: short, easy to use, usually a 2-4” blade used for vegetable and fruit peeling and trimming • Tourney: a small knife similar to a paring knife, except its curved blade makes cutting curved surfaces easier • French or chef’s knife: multi-purpose knife with 8-14” blade engineered for general cutting, chopping mincing and slicing • Utility: light version of a chef ’s knife: 5-7’ blade used for lighter cutting or for inexperienced cooks • Boning knife: blade is 6” long but is thinner and shorter than a chef ’s knife, designed for separating raw meat muscles and fish from bones • Filleting: similar shape to boning yet with flexible blade, designed strictly for boning and filleting fish • Cleaver: heavy-duty chopping (including bones), has broad rectangular blade with varied thicknesses, widths and lengths dependent on the food to be cut or the chefs desire • Carving or slicing knife: finely edged knife used for carving cooked meats and poultry, has a long flexible blade may have a round or pointed end, can be tapered or have a fluted edge These are the basic tools of the trade; most chefs will have a kit consisting of at least 80 percent of these. The real trick is to keep them sharp, because then they are much easier to use

DISPATCHES » Safer water abroad – You know that water in foreign countries can make you sick, but bottled water can be a risk, too. Inspect all bottled water labels carefully. Look for bottles carrying an IBWA (International Bottled Water Association) seal, and check the NSF Web site (nsf.org/ certified/BWPI) to search for brands that meet IBWA standards. As a last resort, hot tap water is less risky than cold. - www.concierge.com

» Soil test – To determine whether your garden soil is ready for seeds, grab a good handful of it. If you can form it into a ball, the soil is too wet. If it crumbles through your fingers and reminds you of chocolate cake, it's ready for planting. If the soil is ready, give it a good stirring and let it sit for several days. Then top-dress it with compost or well-rotted manure and plant beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, radishes, parsnips, lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard and turnips. - www.almanac.com

Indianapolis

Body by Science By Doug McGuff, M.D. & John Little One reason for not exercising is that it takes too much time. The premise of this book is that individuals can get a superior workout in 12 minutes a week. Here’s how it works: Our bodies recruit muscles for our activities as they perceive the need. If the weight is heavy enough, all of the muscle fiber types will be called into action to accomplish the task at hand. The goal is to achieve failure for all of the muscle fibers so it will send a signal to the body to grow more muscle. It is important to understand that after muscle fibers are fatigued, they must have time to recover and then grow before another workout is undertaken. The benefits of this training system include increased strength and gastrointestinal transit time, higher resting metabolism, more efficient glucose metabolism, release of body fat stores, improved blood lipid profiles, enhanced flexibility and cardiovascular stimulation. Illustrations and photographs support the text. For more information and a list of recommended trainers, visit Body by Science online at www.bodybyscience.net. The Web site features informational videos as well as video examples of what a super slow, high-intensity workout looks like. Reviewed by Deanna Street CCPL Readers’ Advisory Librarian

Build your brand; don’t be a ‘me-too’ company

DISPATCHES » Dream stocks for real estate investors 1. E-House Holdings (EJ) – It's China's largest residential real-estate brokerage in the country's booming housing market. 2. COMMENTARY By David Cain What does your company stand for? What’s your organization’s unique ability? What makes it different? How does your company stand out from the masses? What makes you the “green apple” in a heaping pile of red apples? Most organizations believe their organization is undeniably linked to certain values or claims that make them distinct. Whether those claims are in reference to exceptional customer service or more focused on high product quality, at the end of the day most companies have something they think they stand for. Volvo, for example, stands for safety, whereas BMW stands for high performance, and Ford focuses its messaging on “built tough.” These companies spend millions to impress upon consumers what their brand stands for, or at least what they want you to think it stands for. It’s important to know who you are and to have an identity in the marketplace If you’ve already determined what your claim to fame is, try running that by a search engine. In today’s world, the marketplace can easily be tested with a simple Google or Bing search. If you think

your company is the best at “telephone skills training in central Indiana,” then search that phrase and see what comes up first. If it’s not you, then you might not be the most notable. It’s a search engine economy, and keywords can reveal a lot about where your company ranks. Everyone has to have a unique ability or value proposition. Distill it to a couple of words so people can understand what you do and what you stand for. Add this new message to your Web site. Include it in your content and keywords. Start using your unique value statement in your marketing materials, and soon you’ll start ranking higher and higher. Once you make it to the top, it’ll be easier for people to find you and easier for them to understand what you do. Too often, the couple of words a company stands for are “me too,” because it has taken ownership of nothing unique. Bob Crothers has just expanded his Internet bariatrics store to a Carmel location. Before opening BJ’s Bariatrics, Crothers was actively involved in the bariatric community. As a former gastric bypass surgery patient, Crothers knows the difficulties of the surgery and the postCrothers op experience. The Internet bariatrics store was started in Feb. 2009 and has been available nationally to those seeking to lose weight. His Internet store now has a physical home in Carmel at 662-G S. Range Line Road. His store caters to the post-op patient looking to lose weight. The store is not a low-carb store, but rather a low-sugar store, which is more important to the postop patient according to Crothers. BJ’s Bariatrics has vitamins and other supplements, such as protein, for sale in their Carmel store or online at www.bjsbariatrics.com.

Dealing with bulging, unsightly veins COMMENTARY By Dr. Jodie Harper and Dr. Angela Corea Superficial blue or red veins can be unsightly. They can be large, bulging, and painful (varicose) or very small and spider-like (reticular or “spider veins”). So how did they get there? And can they be removed safely? In a general sense, the purpose of veins is to bring blood from the tissues back to the heart through a series of valves. Visible veins are usually the result of longstanding, incompetent, leaky valves that cause pressure over time. This results in vein dilation and their appearance in the superficial skin. This can be aggravated by heredity, pregnancy, hormones, occupations or situations requiring prolonged standing, obesity, sun exposure or trauma. Compression stockings can slow the progression and keep existing large veins decompressed, but they do not remove the veins. Once the decision to remove these unsightly veins is made, patients need to be assessed by a medical professional. Usually these veins are simply a cosmetic concern. However, sometimes it is a serious medical problem that may require surgical or invasive intervention to alleviate pain or risks of chronic wounds and blood clots. Removal treatment options exist and depend on severity. Large varicose veins are usually treated with more invasive measures like surgery. Vein stripping is a surgical procedure that involves either spinal or general anesthesia. In

this procedure, an incision is made at one end of the vessel. By tunneling down the vessel under the skin with a specific instrument, it is then pulled out. Radiofrequency ablation is a procedure that involves inserting a sterile catheter into the length of the vein and using radio waves to heat and collapse the vessel. Smaller varicose or reticular (spider veins), can be treated with sclerotherapy. This involves injections directly into these vessels with an agent that scars down the vessel. Laser/pulsed light therapy is a remarkable, affordable non-invasive technique – meaning NO surgery or needles. These techniques are indicated for the treatment of small to medium spider veins. With these lasers, one may also treat tiny capillaries or facial veins, usually a result of sun damage, heredity, or minor trauma. Multiple treatments may be necessary and may result in mild redness and swelling that resolves over several hours. COMMENTARY By Dmitry M. Arbuck Osteoarthritis is the usual cause of knee pain. At the same time, there are many other reasons for knee pain, and because of that, patients have to be carefully evaluated. Such diverse conditions as gout or sepsis or Lyme disease and others may cause inflammation in the knees. Labs and tests may uncover the exact cause of the knee pain. The usual treatment for knee pain is antiinflammatory medication like Ibuprofen, Naprosyn and others. There is a modern technology of injecting medication inside the knees. It may be a steroid medication to stop inflammation or a very useful injection of an artificial lubricant, which stimulates the knees to produce the natural lubricant and keep the knees healthy. Hyalgan, Euflexxa, and Synvisc are examples of such injections. There is an exciting new development around

Do you really need it? The evidence that multivitamins offer little if any protection for the average person keeps growing. Still, there are some groups of people who may need them: • Dieters: If a health-care professional advises cutting calories severely. • Strict vegetarians: May be better off with single supplements since multis may have too much of what they don’t need and not enough of what they do. • People with certain disorders: Your doctor should tell you if you have a medical reason for taking a supplement; ask if you have questions. • People with poor diets, especially the very old. • Women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or nursing. -Consumer Reports onHealth

The face of a Christian COMMENTARY By Bob Walters Do you know anyone at church, or elsewhere, who is just a real sourpuss? I heard a good sermon on Easter about the ongoing joy Christians should experience. Easter teaches us that Jesus knows our human frailties, carries us in our troubles, forgives us of our sins, and that his resurrection – Easter’s main point – should transform our grief, guilt and fear into perpetual courage, hope and joy. Christ did all that for love, for freedom, and for communion. So … I thought about all the times I’m not joyful; when I’m impatient or scared or nervous: i.e., when I’m a sourpuss. I also thought of a lovely funeral service I attended in Anderson a few weeks ago for a sweet Christian lady who died at age 97. She had lived well, had failed physically in her last few years, but had her mental capacity to the end. What her preacher said at the funeral was glowing and gracious, but one particular comment stuck out. Through her decades of marriage, raising children and generations (through great-great grandchildren), being an energetic and generous servant-saint in the church and community, and in those last, difficult months in a nursing home as her mortal body shut down, “she never complained,” he said.

We know someone has lived well and died well when we attend a funeral like that. We Christians are a funny bunch when it comes to death … we cry like everyone else, but know that the eternal point of our faith is meeting Jesus on the other side. So not every death is heartbreaking, although some are. Neither is every life uplifting, although each one can be. Christ forgave each one of us, saved each one of us, and asks faith of each one of us. The ball of salvation is in our court. As we think deeply about how faith and fear cannot be compatible, and about how our faith and love are acts of will, not accidents of fate, we should also contemplate our response to this amazing gift of forgiveness. We can’t repay it, nor should we try. Whether one believes faith is preordained or not, one’s actions are definitely not. Accepting God’s love means managing – for His Glory – pure freedom. So a Christian’s face should reflect grace and courage, not impatience or fear. Don’t be a sourpuss. Choose, always, to let your face show God’s love.

Learn to speak the languages of love

call 489-4444 for info

COUPONS

COMMENTARY By Rachael Noble So you’ve given it your all: brought her favorite bagel to her at work, fixed her flat tire, made sure she was taken care of at all times. But the relationship still failed. You put in 100 percent, so what went wrong? If you haven’t read the book, “The Five Love Languages” by Dr. Gary Chapman, get off your duff and go buy it right now, because it could turn your relationship around! According to his theory, Dr. Chapman states that everyone has a “love language” that they “speak” to show love and that when it is also “spoken” to them, it makes them feel loved. For instance, in the example above, this dude was doing special things for his girlfriend, but were these things HER love language? His love language seemed to be “acts of service” – doing things for her to make her feel taken care of, like bringing her her favorite bagel. But if her love language is “quality time” (spending special time with her), these acts are nice, but she will truly feel loved if he spends time with her, considering that is her way of feeling cared for. The five languages mentioned in the book are “acts of service,” “quality time,” “receiving gifts,” “physical touch” and “words of affirmation.” If

you figure out which of these makes your partner feel most loved and you start to act out that language to him/her, I would bet my next paycheck your mate is going to feel more appreciated and loved than ever. And if you know your partner’s language and they’re, say, spending time with you, even if that’s not your love language, it will make you feel good to know she is, in her own way, trying to show you she cares. Now I have to clarify the physical touch language. We all know what our first thought is when we hear this phrase, but this refers more to the general act of touching – holding hands, sitting closely together, etc. So how do you know what another’s love language is? Watch closely the things they do for you. Does she buy you little gifts (receiving gifts)? Does he long for you to tell him that he rocks your world (words of affirmation)? That’s his love language! So start to rethink the way you show your love – he’ll feel it so much more when you’re speaking his love language. Rachael Noble is a single Carmel resident and contributing columnist. What the new iPad really is

COMMENTARY By Gary Hubbard I am amazed at how many times I have heard the perspective that Apple’s latest gadget could replace a laptop; it’s a clear testament to the power of the Steve Jobs hype machine. The iPad is actually not “like” anything currently on the market, so replacing something else as important as a laptop computer with this new device is not very feasible. Envision an iPod Touch on steroids – that’s what the iPad really is. Steve Jobs is a really smart guy; he wouldn’t create a new device that makes his laptops irrelevant! Lots of reviews are comparing it to the “netbook” category, but I disagree. Netbooks are designed to focus on productivity and the creation of information, while the iPad is better suited for entertainment and the consumption of information. It’s entirely conceivable for lots of people to own a netbook and an iPad, because they really do things well in different areas. The best way that I can think of positioning the iPad is for those that want an e-reader (like the Kindle or Nook), a video playback system (like a portable DVD player), a portable gaming system (like the PSP), a music system (like the

iPod) and an amazing Web browser/ e-mail terminal that’s perfect for surfing while watching TV – all rolled into one device. A laptop, on the other hand, is much more suited to word processing, spreadsheets and other productivity tasks and less suited to the entertainment side where the iPad shines. Both can do what the other specializes in, but not very efficiently. For example, to perform simple word processing tasks on the iPad (an essential part of any educational use), you have to buy (and learn) a special word processing program and get used to typing with the onscreen keyboard. You can buy an optional external keyboard, but now you’re eliminating some of the big advantages of the iPad (the form factor and multitouch interface) and adding even more cost and more bulk to get it to do something it really wasn’t designed to do. Conversely, lying around on the couch trying

to check e-mail or surf the web with a laptop or Netbook isn’t nearly as elegant as it is with the iPad. The iPad uses the same operating system as the iPhone, so you still can’t view flash content from Internet sites (big blank boxes will replace any flash video on a Web page) or watch video from popular sites like Hulu or Netflix. Additionally, the iPad also is not capable of multitasking, so you can only run one application at a time and there is no camera on the iPad, so webcam activities are also a no-go. The gaming experience on the iPad is substantially better than it is on a Netbook or even a laptop because of the light-weight design, the built-in “accelerometer” and the gaming apps that are (and will continue to be) developed for this platform. I assure you everyone would love to own an iPad because it’s so unique, but make sure you understand what it really does before you plunk down your cash. A meal lasts a lifetime – picture or no picture COMMENTARY By Mike Redmond Just back from vacation. As they used to say in my hometown paper, The Hooterville World Guardian, a good time was had by all and refreshments were served. About those refreshments … I noticed something on this trip that puzzled me. Every time I sat down to eat, someone at a table nearby would produce a camera and start flashing away, paparazzi style. No, not at me. At their food. I’m not kidding. Every single meal – and I ate a lot of ‘em – someone would be aiming a camera – cell phone, point-and-shoot, single-lens reflex – at their plate. Didn’t matter what it was, either. From a hamburger and fries to a lobster dinner, they all got the “Say CHEESE” treatment. Including the cheese. Now, I have been a photographer, and I have done food photography for newspapers, but I’ve never photographed my own food. In fact, the whole idea seems just a little weird to me. And for a guy who knows weird as well as I do, that is saying something. Maybe it’s because I am half-McKenzie, which means my veins are coursing with the blood of a people who remember every meal they have ever eaten. I am not kidding. Come to one of our family reunions sometime. The top three conversational topics are What I Am

Eating, What I Have Eaten, and What I Hope To Eat Someday. When do we have these conversations? While we’re eating, of course. Of course, we have our favorites – the classics, if you will: Grandma McKenzie’s fried and braised squirrel; fresh hams with their crispy crackling skin and rich, tender meat (generally preferred to roast beef, in part because hogs paid a lot of McKenzie mortgages); glorious new asparagus, unburdened by sauces; morel mushrooms, one of the signs that truly we have a Benevolent Creator who wants us to be happy; and desserts of all descriptions. All are remembered fondly, recreated faithfully or anticipated hungrily. Usually when we’re standing in the buffet line. I also have keen memories of restaurant meals, some of them almost 50 years old, from simple hamburgers at a drive-in in Huntington to lobster ravioli at an Indianapolis restaurant

that closed before I was able to go back and make sure I hadn’t imagined the entire thing, to boudin sausage eaten at a small chrome-legged table in a shack added onto a gas station near Lafayette, La.They are as alive in my memory as if I had eaten them yesterday. Which brings up an interesting point. Why is it that I can remember all these meals from long ago, but am not entirely certain about what I might have had for dinner last night? This points out the value of taking photos of your food, at least for those of us who have a few thousand miles on the odometer. Don’t remember what you ate? Look on your camera. I’ve talked to some people about their food photos, though, and I don’t think that’s exactly why they do it. I think they’re using the photos as more of a visual diary, which is actually kind of cool. And useful. No more arguments over whether the pizza was with pepperoni or sausage. Now you’ll have conclusive proof. Which gets me back to what I ate last night. I just remembered. Canned tuna. No photo necessary.

I’m just a high-tech wreck COMMENTARY By Dick Wolfsie The iPad is the newest offering by Apple genius Steve Jobs. I just read an article about it that noted, “This will totally affect your life.” I know it will change mine. The toughest part of the technological revolution for me has been coming up with plausible reasons why I’m not going to buy each new gadget. When I was in college, I used a manual Underwood typewriter. When electric typewriters became the rage, I fought it tooth and fingernail. I asserted there was a downside to typing faster than you can think. Computers are even speedier, so I use that excuse to explain the drivel I put out every week. My battle with technology continued into the early ’70s when I refused to buy Post-it notes because I felt they were a lazy way to remember things. My concerns did not make for sparkling cocktail conversation with a first date, although I didn’t have a lot of first dates. I kept forgetting to show up. When I first heard about fax machines, I was

also resistant. I finally went out and bought one in l980, but I had nothing to fax. Thirty years later, I still don’t have anything to fax. Have you ever met me? Do I look like a person who has documents that need to get someplace in 30 seconds? I remember the first time I saw someone with a cell phone. I was playing golf back in the early ’90s and a guy was calling his wife on the third tee. Then his boss called him on the 4th tee. And on the next hole his dentist’s office called him. Avoiding people was the very reason I was playing golf. I relented and bought a cell phone, of course, but I haven’t learned how to fully use it. I have never taken a photo with my phone. And the only text I have ever gotten was from AT&T trying to get me to cough up the bucks for an iPhone. The big cellular providers are missing some good opportunities to market to older people. How about a cell phone with a metal detector in it, so I can go to Indiana Dunes and poke around for nickels in the sand? Or a gentle

alarm to wake me from my nap to let me know it’s time to go to bed? Where is AARP when I need it? Now, let’s talk about Twitter. Every day I get e-mails from people who say they are following me on Twitter. At first that struck me as creepy, but wait: I’m not on Twitter. So how can I be followed? Fine, you might as well also follow me to the ballet, the international turkey-calling contest or a clogging demonstration. Good luck. Reluctantly, I joined Facebook, but I still can’t figure out how this whole thing works. The other day a lady was ticked at something I said on TV and she wrote me a note and posted it on my wall. Why are people writing on my wall? Were they brought up in a New York subway? Now the whole world knows what a jerk I am. This was supposed to be a secret. I have a confession to make. I bought a Kindle, one of those hand-held doodads that downloads entire books to view on an electronic screen. I do miss the feel of real paper, though. So I’m using Post-it notes to mark my favorite pages.

Time to get your yard back into shape COMMENTARY By Randy Sorrell What are those florescent pink flowering trees buried deep in the woods that are equally comfortable guarding the corners of suburban homes? Or the cheerful yellow wild flowering shrubs dominating woods’ edge? Ever wonder about the dainty pink or white flowering trees keeping those florescent guys company? This fantastic ornamental loves the protected northern and eastern sites of homes and has a marvelous biblical connection. E-mail me if you care to hear the story of the blood-stained petals and crown of thorns. (Answers: redbuds, forsthia, dogwoods). Pears, crabapples and serviceberry, my determined favorite, all explode this time of year and may have challenged your above responses.

BUZZ KILL

I hate to be a downer, especially fresh off our bronzed Spring Break perspectives, but someone has to bring reality into perspective. You probably already have this on your “to do” list, but it’s time to cut last years spent perennials and ornamental grasses to the ground. Yep, all the way to the ground. Fear not. They will return clean and perky, just like you after last week’s respite. Here are the next few sweat producers to manage, in this order: Start at the top and clean the gutters, pick up the spent perennials and grasses you just cut back, prune shrub roses

back to green stem growth, and then finish cleaning the beds of debris and leaves. To reduce maintenance, carefully spread a granular preemergent weed control and all-purpose fertilizer in the beds. Azaleas, roses, hydrangeas and rhododendrons appreciate plant-specific love, but it’s not critical. Phase two is tuff stuff if you have bloated bed lines. Nothing says perfection like a skillfully dug bed edge – think 4-6” deep at a 45-degree angle with smooth edges. Clumpy/jagged is tacky. Now for the icing on the cake, mulch. A total of 3-4” is plenty, including previous years

accumulation. Much more invites problems, pests and some other “P” word that escapes me now. Don’t you love the smell of good mulch, especially if someone else has installed it? Spring into life! Spring into family and the out of doors, where healing begins and the magic of life really does come true. Randy Sorrell is president of SURROUNDINGS by NatureWorks+, a Carmel home improvement firm. Find cancer early. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 48,010 people will be diagnosed with head and neck cancer this year. Many of those are related to tobacco use, while others may have a relationship to viral causes such as HPV and Epstein-Barr virus. When irregularities are found very early through a quick and painless physical examination of the mouth, facial area and neck, these cancers can be more easily treated without significant complications.
