Ticket law faces a setback By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com The Indiana Supreme Court has decided to not hear an appeal from the City of Carmel in regards to an overlegal turned traffic ordinance. The Indiana State Court of Appeals previously nullified Carmel’s law, which came down to not what the speed limit should be, but rather who should get the money from the tickets. The State of Indiana has a law against driving faster than 20 miles per hour in construction zones, and the City of Carmel referenced that law in a local ordinance so the city could collect the money and receive a bigger portion of the revenue. After the ruling, Carmel police officers have still been writing tickets, but under the state code instead. “I’m disappointed that they chose to look at technicalities rather than substance,” Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard told Current in Carmel. Brainard said he hopes to have the law changed, but in the meantime he said he will honor the court’s decision. “We will do as they require and move ahead,” he said. The Supreme Court’s decision to not listen to an appeal has ramifications for a civil lawsuit that was filed. Attorney Edward G. Bielski has filed a class-action lawsuit that questions anyone who received tickets under Carmel’s nowoverturned provisions. Bielski claims his plaintiffs were never charged under a valid law. Brainard declined to comment on the civil lawsuit because he said it’s not appropriate to talk about ongoing legal cases. According to court documents, Carmel police officers issued 8,124 citations under the ordinance during the past three years.

Trucks banned on Keystone By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com Now that most of U.S. 31 has reopened, Carmel has reinstated its ban on heavy semitrucks on Keystone transportation Parkway. Back in 2008, the City of Carmel enacted an ordinance to prohibit heavy trucks on Keystone Parkway because it was assuming jurisdiction spanning approximately four miles of Keystone — formerly called Ind. 431 — from 96th to 146th Streets. Even then, the U.S. 31 project was anticipated, so it was built into that ordinance to allow for a temporary detour along Keystone during U.S. 31 construction. That exemption is now lifted. The ordinance bans trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating or a combined gross vehicle weight rating of 19,501 pounds or more and can be punishable by a fine of up to $500. There are exemptions for trucks delivering or picking up goods or performing services at local businesses and for government-owned vehicles.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said the ordinance still makes sense for Keystone Parkway. “Large trucks can create a lot of damage to our roads,” he said. Brainard said U.S. 31 is built with trucks in mind and he sees Keystone Parkway as more of a residential road. The change is in effect now that the Indiana Dept. of Transportation deemed U.S. 31 ready to handle truck traffic again. Carmel has spent millions of dollars to redo Keystone Parkway and add roundabout interchanges along the road. Another roundabout interchange is being proposed for 96th Street and Keystone Parkway and has funds available through a recently passed package of $242 million in municipal bonds and other funding sources. Back in January, an oversized truck hit a bridge along Keystone Parkway at 106th Street, causing a closure to fix the concrete along the bridge beam.

Supreme Court justice to retire By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Brent Dickson had no expectations of leaving the Indiana Supreme Court as the secondlongest serving judge in state history when he was appointed in retirement January 1986. “I had no idea I’d be around 30 years from that time,” Dickson said. “The man who served longer than me left the court in 1853.” Isaac Blackford served 35 years. Dickson reaches the mandatory retirement age of 75 in July. The retirement will be effective on April 29. Dickson was enjoying his private law practice in the Lafayette area when a couple of colleagues suggested he think about applying to be Supreme Court justice. “I said, ‘Maybe when I retire (as a lawyer),’” Dickson said. “They said, ‘No. Think about it now. The commission has shown they are looking for some younger people.’ I threw my hat in the ring and was selected.” There are five justices on the Supreme Court at a time. Dickson has served with 12 other justices during his tenure. “One of the privileges has been working with my four colleagues, whoever they have been,”

Justice Brent Dickson of Carmel has served on the Indiana Supreme Court since 1986. (Submitted photo)

Dickson said. “We’ve been a great blend.” After Gov. Robert Orr appointed Dickson, he and his family moved from West Lafayette to Carmel because of the school system. “Every case presents a new set of challenges,” Dickson said. “You realize that case is the most important case those clients will ever had that are involved in it. So it deserves our full attention.” In retirement, Dickson will still work as a senior judge assigned to Supreme Court projects and plans to do some arbitration and mediation. “I want to enjoy some quality time with my wife and being a grandpa,” said Dickson, who has nine grandchildren.

Natatorium to undergo repairs By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com The usually bustling Carmel High School natatorium will undergo a different sort of activity in June. swimming The Carmel Clay school board recently approved a bid of $608,127 by Myers Construction Management for repairs to the Carmel High School natatorium. The project includes repairing the roof structure and roof replacement at the skylights and construction of additional ventilation components to increase air circulation. The project is funded Inskeep through 2015 general obligation bonds. Construction is expected to start June 1 and last approximately 35 days. “Students, coaches, community members and fans will benefit from the renovations to the facility, which was built in 1998,” CHS Athletic Director Jim Inskeep said. Roger McMichael, Carmel Clay Schools’ associate superintendent for business affairs, said the Carmel Swim Club was consulted on the best time to make the repairs. “We’re replacing a portion of the roof over

the pool and also doing some structural work related to the roof,” McMichael said. “That’s the largest part of the project.” “We’re also doing some work to improve the ventilation system. The pool met all the code requirements when it was built in the 1990s. As you can imagine, there is always an issue around chlorine coming off the pool deck. So we’re putting in some different type of ventilation to improve the air circulation,” he added. McMichael said there was nothing broken with the ventilation system, it just needs an upgrade. He said over the years there have been methods that may betPlumb ter address the ventilation in the pool area. McMichael said the roof repair is needed from normal wear and tear. “There is metalwork on the outside of the building that needed to be repaired along with the roof itself,” he said. Carmel Swim Club Coach Chris Plumb said he hopes to be back in the natatorium sometime in the first week in July. “We are negotiating with other pools to find water time (in June),” he said.

The event will include a fashion show, shopping, a coin purse raffle by Saks Fifth Avenue, lunch, a runway show and a free charm from Smith’s Jewelers. “It’s always great awareness for the community to see that we do have victims of violence in our neighborhoods and in our backyards that need assistance,” said Natasha Robinson, event and marketing coordinator for Prevail. “We have been serving the community for 30 years, and in that time people have helped us support over 37,000 victims. This is just one of the examples of an event that goes back to continue to make those services free of charge and raise awareness for our community.” “We have an inspirational speaker who shares her story,” Robinson said. “She is a secondary victim, her child was in services here, and she is a parent of the victim.” Robinson said that the luncheon is different than Prevail’s gala fundraiser that they hold

CHS senior earns top honors for collecting, donating shoes By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Kamna Gupta’s mission began during a 2013 visit to her parents’ native India. Near the Taj Mahal, Gupta noticed cover story a man seeking money who had made a pair of shoes out of empty plastic water bottles and hay. “He had cuts and bruises on his feet and couldn’t walk well or stand well,” Gupta said. “So I felt like I needed to do something, I took whatever money I had and went to nearest vendor and bought a pair of flip-flops for him, and with the money left I bought him a meal. He rejoiced and was extremely happy, which made me happy as well. I realized I couldn’t buy flip-flops and a meal for every single person I see on the street. That doesn’t provide a long-term solution, only a short-term solution.” So Gupta was determined to do something about it when she returned home to Carmel. A few months later, she created Soles for Souls, a nonprofit, seeking donations of gently-used shoes. Now three years later, the Carmel High School senior has collected 2,800 pounds of shoes (each pair weighs between one and two pounds). ShoeBox Recycling works with her to package and clean the shoes to send them abroad. “They’re supporting me, and I’m supporting them by sending them the shoes,” Gupta said. Gupta recently received the Indiana top high school youth volunteer for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, earning a $1,000 scholarship and an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. April 30 to May 4. Ten of the state honorees (five middle school and five high school) will be named America’s top youth volunteers of 2016. They will receive $5,000 awards, gold medallions and a $5,000 grant to the nonprofit of their choice. Along with collecting shoes, Gupta uses her nonprofit as a forum to educate younger children. “We use this as an educational opportunity to teach the youth the spirit of volunteerism and why you should volunteer,” Gupta said. Gupta collects the shoes through her website and at Hindu Temple of Central Indiana, where she attends. Initially Gupta met some resistance at her temple. “Some criticized me, saying, ‘Why are you bringing dirty shoes in a holy place?’” said Gupta, adding the shoes do-

nation box was outside the worship area. “I also received overwhelming support from the temple as well.” Twice the boxes of shoes were thrown away. Gupta said she realized she had to step up her game to convince the members of the temple its value as a donation spot for the shoes. “People telling me I couldn’t do what I wanted to do and make a difference in people’s lives around the world just inspired me more to work even harder,” Gupta said. Several Indiana organizations have helped her collect shoes. Gupta’s friends and family have started collecting shoes in Ohio and Michigan. Gupta wants to develop a national network. Gupta’s Soles for Souls project also has earned her the 2015 President’s Volunteer Service Award, 2015 Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program regional winner and the Gold Award from Girl Scouts of America. Gupta was named one of eight Girl Scouts of USA gold award winners to earn the National Young Women of

Distinction honor. She said will present her Soles for Souls project at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. this summer. Hindu Temple Sunday school teacher Anita Joshi praised Gupta’s devotion. “She’s been a joy to work with on that,” Joshi said. “She is incredibly dedicated. She has spent countless hours promoting the Soles for Souls, talking about it with all our youth members as well as adult members. She organized some of the youth to sort them and help her. You can tell it’s been a great passion and love of hers to participate in this organization.” Gupta represents the youth group on her temple’s executive committee. As part of that position, she plans service opportunities for youth. She would organize nursing home visits as well as raise money for temple construction.

Meet Kamna Gupta Personal: The National Honor Society member has a grade point average above 4.0 with advanced placement classes. She will attend IUPUI on a Bepko Fellowship scholarship, which includes full tuition for four years and two years of housing, which is based on test scores, GPA and community service. Plans to earn a teaching diploma to instruct other students in Indian dance.

Activities: Gupta is the vice president of Design for CHS, a web design club. She was a finalist in the 2016 state DECA competition. Earlier this month, in the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair, she earned the John and Janet Davis Scholarship, first place plaque and $500 in her division for her project, Therapeutic Evaluation of Griseofulvin in a Mouse Model of Choroidal Neovascularization. Gupta also earned first place in pharmacy related project, earned Intel ISEF entry into Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix May 8 to 13, and has been selected for a two-week kathak dance workshop this summer in New York with Pandit Birju Maharaj, a noted classical Indian instructor.

A third house update

FR O M   T HE COMMUNITY

Transparency receives a boost I would like to thank the Statehouse legislators, especially Rep. Jerry Torr and Sen. Jim Merritt, for supporting House Bill 1017, which Gov. Mike Pence signed into law March 23, 2016. This bill added local newspapers, such as Current, to the list of acceptable printmedia options in which municipalities can publish public notices. This new rule allows for greater transparency of local government, which is what I told the Senate Committee on Local Government when I spoke in support of this bill. The new law dropped the requirement that the media had to have a “paid subscription” base in order to be on the list of acceptable notice publications. Before HB1017, my office could only select The Noblesville Times as the media outlet for publishing public notices, and it reaches only 1.3 percent of Carmel residents. Current, as you might know, is free and reaches 100 percent of households in the communities it serves. We now have market competition and options for public noticing. In Carmel, and maybe it’s the same in your community, residents routinely have voiced their dismay that public notices are not in Current. When they do not see notices printed in the Current, our residents assume we are not doing our job of adequately notifying them of important city business taking place at public meetings. The City of Carmel clerk treasurer, mayor and the Common Council value the citizens’ input, because the more they know, the better our government can represent them. Thank you, State of Indiana, for putting transparency first! Christine S. Pauley is the clerk treasurer for the City of Carmel and the executive director of the City of Carmel Local Public Improvement Bond Bank. You may reach her at 317-571-2430.

Commentary by Danielle Wilson

An Iditarod dilemma Commentary by Terry Anker We all seek success. Right? Well, can we agree that we all want to be able to keep up with the achievement of those closest to us? Being valued as a member of the crew, or family, or dog-sled team, is important to our ego – and to our general well-being. If the lead dog is able to run for 20 miles and if we are pulling the same sled, then anything less would hold back the top achiever. So, how do we keep up? We can practice and push ourselves to performance consistent with that front canine. Such may be the best and most honorable way to prove our worth to the collective. But, what if we’re not able (or willing) to exert the effort required to be a mutual contributor to the effort? In that case, perhaps our strength comes from some other special skill. Our inability to run the course might be off-set by our ability to get the most out of the other dogs. While our best running days are over, we’ve become highly adroit at logistics, sled

maintenance, or nutrition. We are the team’s secret weapon. Yet sometimes, our inclusion only debilitates the work of the others. Our failure to know and admit our own limitations becomes a drain on the contributions of the rest. We can guilt or cajole the team into keeping us. We can undermine the confidence of the top performers to hold on a bit longer. But, the truth may be that we should simply retire. Are we keeping up, contributing, or getting in the way? The best among us ask this question routinely in the course of life’s winding journey. It helps us correct and focus our effort. And, it can make us confront our own uncomfortable truths – good and bad. It’s an Iditarod dilemma. Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. Q U O T E  O F  T HE WEEK Never look back unless you are planning to go that way. – Henry David Thoreau

I apologize for once again harping on about our kitchen remodel, but the experience is so overwhelming that humor I can think of little else. We are heading into either Week 6 or 7 (I’ve lost track) of no sink, disposal, dishwasher or countertops, and new in the last few days, also no main-floor toilet. I mention this because our oldest son’s bedroom is adjacent to this bathroom, and he cannot contain his frustration at having to climb stairs and cut through a sibling’s room to use the facilities in the middle of the night. Okay! We get it. We’ve ruined your life. Now suck it up and deal. For the love of all that is holy, just please. Stop. COMPLAINING! On a positive note, we finally installed new flooring, so we no longer have to worry that we’re breathing fecal-contaminated air. But now, our overweight, anxious, earinfected Labrador, who used to love running herself silly around the living and family rooms, can barely function. The change has left her quiet, withdrawn and seemingly depressed. A welcome change from her normal shenanigans, certainly, but I do kind of feel sorry for her. Kinda. And my husband and I finally snapped. A “discussion” the other day quickly escalated, driving me to tears and Doo to major schmuck-dom. At the end, we realized most of the issues were stress-based, thanks to our home having been a barely-livable S-box for almost two months. Why don’t I see this kind of drama on Fixer Upper or Property Brothers? I watched HGTV religiously in preparation for this reno, and never once did I see families ready to rip each other apart. There were disagreements, yes, but all the shows made kitchen redo’s look effortless, even fun. Not cool, Joanna Gaines! Not cool. Supposedly, the insanity will end in a few days when the last of the “biggies” arrive, our countertops. Within the week, the kitchen should be restored, and hopefully, domestic order, too. And then I’ll return to writing about more exciting topics, like working-mom guilt and the infinite uses of Clorox. Yay! Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a contributing columnist. It’s sad to see trees removed

Editor, How ironic that in the same issue (April 12) of the Current there was the article concerning the Monon expansion and the removal of vegetation and another article concerning the mission of the Nature Center to try to save and provide a habitat for the endangered Monarch butterflies. In the last few years, it has been sad to me to see that so many mature trees and vegetation have been removed from the city so that businesses and buildings could be built, especially when there are many empty businesses and for lease signs all over Carmel. On paper, it sounds good that Carmel has planted so many trees, but there is no way

planting 100 small trees with a ring of mulch around them can ever replace one that is 100 years old that is surrounded by shrubs and plants. The low vegetation is where birds and butterflies get their food and make their nesting areas and there are not many of those areas left. If people have to go a little slower on the Monon Trail, that is not a bad thing, and it is so nice to have a shaded area in the summer. Not only is this project destructive, it will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. I hate to see the natural look of Carmel being replaced by expensive buildings and “For Lease” signs. Ginny Day, Carmel

Editor, Your recent story about Bella Simons absolutely warmed my heart. She is a beautiful and brave young girl who I think can teach us all a lesson. Life deals us many challenges, but it is how we react that makes all the differ-

ence. Even as sophomores, the way her fellow classmates have supported and stood behind her is inspiring. I am glad to be reminded of the fact that every day really is a gift. Keep fighting, Bella! You are absolutely an inspiration to all. Caroline Burkhart, Carmel

DIVORCE – WHAT TO EXPECT: Going to Court Although settlement is the preferred resolution for family law cases and frequently results in a better conclusion for all concerned, the parties have the fundamental right to have their dispute heard and decided by a judge. Court hearings have structured and specific procedures and understanding what the Court will hear and how evidence must be presented is key to being prepared. In these circumstances, the “fear of the unknown” is a major concern for clients. Typically, clients have not been in Court to testify and have only limited experience with Court proceedings. In the event your case proceeds to a hearing, knowing what to expect (to the extent that is possible) in Court can help to ease your concerns. Request the Hearing. The Court does not automatically set hearings. Therefore, your attorney will file a written request specifying the issues to cover and the amount of time the parties anticipate needing to present the evidence. These hearing can be for preliminary orders, enforcement requests, and, ultimately, for the final adjudication of the divorce terms themselves. If the case begins with a great deal of conflict and agreement is unlikely, you may request a preliminary hearing upon the filing of your initial Petition. This will ensure that you are set on the Court’s calendar in a timely manner so as to avoid any unnecessary delay in resolving the issues pending before the Court. Be Prepared. Preparation is the key to going to trial. Presenting the proper evidence and anticipating the position of the opposing party are key in obtaining the best possible results. There is no way to know how the Judge will rule on any given issue on any given day due to the fact that each family law case is unique – no two sets of facts are the same – but making your position clear and providing supporting evidence in an organized and efficient manner is essential. Understanding that there is limited time within which to present your evidence to the Judge, deciding which evidence is the most important to present is also essential; frequently, there will not be time for the Judge to hear everything, so what

he/she does hear must point to the result you want and provide the basis for the Court to find that the facts and the law favor the outcome you seek. Understanding what the documentation and witness who can best provide that basis will require considerable preparation, including understanding what questions will be asked of all witnesses and what the information the questions are intended to relay. What to Wear? Simple - look like you respect the Court. While it is not absolutely necessary to dress formally when appearing in Court, that never hurts. You should present yourself in a clean, conservative, business-casual manner. It’s hard to be overdressed; be certain you aren’t underdressed. The Day of the Hearing. Make certain that you know the location of the Court and give yourself time to find parking and make it through the building security. Be early. Courts have limited time and arriving late is a good way to get off to a bad start. Once the Court is ready to begin, the Judge will enter and the matter will begin with the evidence from the party who requested the hearing. At the close of the petitioning parties’ case, the opposing party will present his/her evidence. When all evidence has been presented, the Judge will issue a ruling. This may be done in Court live on the record or after the hearing if the Judge has taken the matter under advisement. If the matter is taken under advisement, the Judge has ninety (90) days to issue a written Order. Frequently, the Judge will ask the attorneys to provide proposed orders for the Court to consider. At Hollingsworth & Zivitz, P.C., our team has the experience, the understanding, and the compassion to assist with your family law needs. If you have questions or concerns regarding divorce, custody, support, or any other family law concerns contact our firm at 317.DIVORCE or visit our website at www.hzlegal.com.

National Association of Home Builders, Spring 2016 Nationwide housing starts rose 5.2 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.178 million units in February, according to newly released data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Commerce Department. Single-family production increased 7.2 percent to 822,000 units— its highest level since November 2007— while multifamily starts remained virtually unchanged, inching up 0.8 percent to 356,000 units. “This month’s report is consistent with positive builder sentiment and other economic indicators showing that the housing market continues to recover at a gradual pace,” said NAHB Chairman Ed Brady, a home builder and developer from Bloomington, Ill. “February’s single-family gains indicate that this sector is strengthening in line with our forecast,” said NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. “As the U.S. economy firms, job creation continues and mortgage interest rates remain low, we should see further growth in housing production moving forward.” Combined single- and multi-family starts rose in three of the four regions in

February, with the West, Midwest and South posting respective gains of 26.1 percent, 19.9 percent and 7.1 percent. The Northeast registered a 51.3 percent loss. Locally, Indianapolis-area home builders had their best February in almost a decade last month with a big surge in new-home buying. The last time area builders filed more permits in February was in 2007, when they filed 442. According to Jennifer Pyatt, co-owner of Pyatt Homes, a local area homebuilder, “Double digit permit gains in both February and March is certainly an indicator that the Indianapolis new home market is heating up. New home builders are seeing results pointing to better-thanseasonal order activity for the first time since the market downturn. With strong fundamentals in place such as low interest rates, improving mortgage availability, record low new home inventory and accelerating household formations, we are confident that we will continue to see moderate increases in permit numbers this year.” As usual, Hamilton County led the area in filings, followed by Marion County then Hendricks County.

Design TrenDs: What Buyer

From modern white kitchens to earthy tones in baths, w By Lauren Shanesy, Builder Online

TaKe iT easy

Consumers often rate the kitchen as the most important room in the home, and with good reason. This area is the spot where families and friends gather together most. Baths, as the serenity space where homeowners go to relax and unwind, follow closely in status. So, what do buyers want in these most-loved spaces? Clean lines and natural-tone finishes, coupled with sophisticated design features, are characteristics that buyers want in their kitchens and baths. Homeowners value function and form over the size of a home, so small design details can go a long way when creating a practical yet stylish space. Here are some of the top design takeaways for kitchens and baths:

When in doubt, stay simple. An all-white color scheme remains a top design trend among consumers for the clean look that it gives kitchens and baths. Clean edges and streamlined fixtures create chic, modern spaces while keeping design straightforward.

organic Tones connecT WiTh naTure

The “casual organic style that buyers prefer incorporates natural surfaces and raw tones to make homes feel more down-to-earth. Using natural wood finishes on countertops and wall panels is a stylish way for buyers to feel like they are bringing the outside in. In baths, natural finishes and textures enhance the spa-like, serene feel that buyers crave when looking to relax in their home and disconnect from the outside world. Buyers are shying away from the artificial and opting for more windows to increase natural light within the home.

rs Love in Kitchens and Baths

we reveal the latest design trends that buyers want now a pop oF coLor

Color goes a long way in a room and costs next to nothing to incorporate. A bright wall or vibrant accent features can transform a bland space into something exciting. Such a simple addition can make a big difference.

aDD Dimension WiTh TexTure

FuncTionaL sTyLe Homeowners are practical; after all, at the end of the day, the most important design element of any home is that it functions well for its residents’ daily life. For buyers looking to maximize function in a small home without taking away from appearance, shelves offer the perfect combination of simple and sensible storage. Shelving in kitchens creates a more open feel than traditional cabinets—and costs less to install, too. Unique light fixtures can also serve as a key design element in a room as an easy and quick way to add flavor and style to the space. Adding the “little extras” will set the home apart from the pack and help buyers feel like they are making the most of their space—pull-out drawers in kitchen cabinets, island extensions and cutting board attachments on the sink are all examples of the useful additions that buyers love.

Clean countertop lines and white finishes may be what buyers are looking for, but the addition of a textured backsplash or exposed material is the extra component that will enhance the character of a kitchen or bath. This takes the “pop of color” trend one step further to embellish the surfaces and provide dimension to a simple room.

THE HOME BUYER’S CHECKLIST Use this checklist to help you select a builder or remodeler to do work on your home: ❑ Does the builder or remodeler have a permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers? ❑ How long have they been in the building business? It usually takes three to five years to establish a financially sound business. Will they be around after the construction is complete to service any warranties? ❑ Is your builder a member of the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis? ❑ Did your builder provide you a copy of the Quality Assurance Builder Standards? ❑ Have you called your local Better Business Bureau? It can alert you to any complaints. ❑ Does the builder/remodeler have sufficient workers compensation and general liability insurance? If not, you may be liable for any construction-related accidents on your premises. ❑ Will the builder/remodeler provide you with names of previous customers? Ask them if they would hire the builder/remodeler again. ❑ Have you seen the builder/remodelers’ work, both completed and in progress? Check for quality of workmanship and materials. ❑ Are you able to communicate with the builder/remodeler? Remember, you will be in close contact with them throughout the construction process and afterward as you live in your new home. ❑ Will the builder/remodeler provide you with a complete and clearly written contract? The contract will benefit both of you. Review it carefully. ❑ Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. If the builder/remodeler is unable to pay for the materials and labor as the project proceeds, this may indicate a problem.

BAGI’s Quality Assurance Builder Standards BAGI’s Quality Assurance Builder Standards provide new homebuyers and remodeling homeowners a way to measure the quality of the project against an industry-approved set of standards. These standards have been developed by BAGI as a service to newhome and remodeling homeowners in the Central Indiana area. BAGI is a membership trade association representing several-hundred-member firms in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Morgan and Shelby Counties. These standards create a series of performance guildlines the builders and the homeowners can use to communicate and understand expectations regarding the building or remodeling project.

The standards address the most prevalent issues that arise between the builder and the customer before the project, during the project, and, most importantly, after the project. “All too often it is the undefined expectations that create the majority of the problems encountered in the building and remodeling processes, says Steve Lains, CEO of the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis. “The standards will help eliminate problems before the project even begins and gives homeowners a level of confidence that they are doing business with a reputable company,” Lains said. Ask your builder how to get your copy of the Quality Assurance Builder Standards.

Sandwich de pollo con durazno Commentary by Ceci Martinez If you have the opportunity to visit Lima, Peru, a must stop is Cafe San Antonio. It’s not only the best bakery in town but is a favorite for locals (you will see the occasional tourist). The menu offers a variety of amazing savory and sweet dishes at a reasonable price. I’ve often been asked what can I recommend from their menu - the answer is that’s always a big dilemma because everything at this cafe, is delicioso! Here, I try to recreate this yummy sandwich from our visit. This dish is great for lazy weekends or school lunch, because it can be ready in a flash. The secret? It is semi-homemade! It is a flexible recipe; you can adjust the quantities to your taste. Serves: 2 Ingredients: • 1 cup rotisserie chicken, shredded • 1 stalk celery, thinly sliced • Handful cup pecans, roasted, chopped

For many, a disease can often be as intimidating as it is painful. For those diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel wellness Disease or Chron’s Disease, a lifetime, non-fatal disease with no cure, it can cause great amounts of stress for both patients and family members who support them. One program by Riley Hospital for Children aims to provide patients and their caregivers with a comfortable environment to learn more about the disease and how to best live with it. The IBD Education Open House, hosted by Riley’s Pediatric GI practice, will bring a number of doctors and nurses to a “science fair” style event in Carmel dedicated to providing guidance in a comfortable manner. “We wanted to create a unique educational event,” Clinical Research Coordinator Kimberly Shelly said. “We wanted people to come in at any point in their diagnosis and be able to get their answers. So that’s why we came up with

idea of educational pods or resource centers.” IBD affects approximately 1.6 million Americans, with as many as 70,000 new diagnoses made each year. IBD commonly causes a chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Inflammation impairs ability of organs like the stomach, intestines, liver or rectum to function properly, which can lead to abdominal pain, bleeding, weight loss and fatigue among other symptoms. “Some kids are required to come in every four to eight weeks and sit for two to three hours in an infusion center getting their medication,” Shelly said. “If you read a lot about it on the internet, of course if seems like a scary thing, but if you’re comfortable enough to pop into (IU North Hospital), we can talk to patients and help them understand their own triggers and needs.” The IBD Education Open House is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. April 30 at the IU North Learning Center, 11700 N. Meridian St., Carmel. Event questions can be directed to Shelly at kashelly@iu.edu.

Company gets creative with ads By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com When Mark Spencer moved his Legacy Window and Door business to Carmel from Westfield, he continuously local business watched cars drive by his new business on Range Line Road without slowing or stopping. Whenever Spencer drove past a property in Carmel on Smokey Row Road, he saw a man working to paint the fence out front. Each day, a piece of the fence was completed. “What I found reassuring about it was a little more of that fence was done each day,” he said. “In our crazy, rushed world, the painter never seemed to be rushed. When I got back, I thought how could I illustrate that?” So spurred the idea of Andi and Ollie who arrived in August, young sibling mannequins that worked on different projects in front of the Legacy Window and Door property, 540 N. Range Line Rd. Spencer changes their positions and activities each day. “We really expect Andi and Ollie to boost our Facebook account,” Spencer said. “It’s boosted the business, we have people that have said they had no idea there was a window and door company on Range Line. It’s a non-crass, non-commercial way to communicate with all the neighbors and also fit in with the arts and design.” Spencer sets the Little People, as passers by have learned to call them, up every morning. Some days they are doing activities such

as gardening and holding lightbulbs and other days they are set up to play sports. Spencer said their favorite sport was croquet. “People seem to really like it when they’re doing something simple. It’s fun and it makes you smile,” Spencer said. “It just gets us closer to the community. I joke that these are our best employees. They’ve never complained.” Spencer purchases old antique toys to use as props for Andi and Ollie. The sibling mannequins will also be in the Carmel Fourth of July parade. “It turned out to be a good marketing strategy for our company,” Spencer said.

Salon01 celebrates 20-years

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com

Micki and David Stirsman started out their salon with six employees in a 1,400-square foot spot on 136th anniversary and Meridian St. Nine months later, the couple expanded to 2,800 square feet when the spot next door became available. Twenty years later, Salon01 is 15,000 square feet with nearly 50 employees. The business celebrated its 20th anniversary April 16. The Intercoiffure salon and spa moved into 200 City Center Dr. in September 2007. Intercoiffure salons are known as one of the most influential in the hairdressing industry. “We’ve grown all different kinds of ways with the products we sell, the services we’re able to offer now, with the involvement with the community both with the Palladium and (Great) American Songbook (Academy), as well as the charities we help to support,” Micki said. “It’s been an interesting journey.” Micki has been in the hairdressing business for 35 years. David is an attorney and entrepreneur, primarily in real estate. “I always was involved in training,” Micki said. “The training is what encouraged me to

keep growing and multiplying.” Salon01 quickly outgrew its space in the initial location. “We were busting at the seams over there, and they were waiting in line to pay us,” Micki said. While looking for an office call center, David instead found a salon in Fishers for sale. So, they opened a second salon. “We asked people who lived east of Keystone to start going to that location,” Micki said. “It worked great for what we needed it for, but I really missed the unity and camaraderie (of having one salon). So that’s when David started searching for a spot in the heart of Carmel, where we wanted to be.”

Events venue gets new name

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com

Oak Hill Mansion has been transformed into Black Iris Estate. The Carmel events venue business not only has a new name but a new look. Black Iris Estate, 5801 E. 116th St., was purchased by Thomas Caterers of Distinction earlier this year. Thomas Caterers is owned by Kelly Early. The business was started by Kelly’s mother, Susann, and her stepfather, Tim Thomas, in 1983 after the couple’s upscale Indianapolis restaurant was destroyed by a fire. So rather than rebuild the restaurant, they started a catering business. Kelly’s husband Vince Early is the director of sales for Thomas Caterers. Several restaurants are looking at Carmel as the right city to open another location of established business roundup eateries. Many chains – local, national and international – are opening new storefronts in Carmel soon. For some, like Mimi Blue Meatballs, it’s only their second location. OEC Japanese Express, 14580 River Rd., will join two other recently opened Asian restaurants in Carmel. OMONI Fresh Korean Fast Grill opened at 13710 N. Meridian St. and Kizuki Ramen & Izakaya opened at 2450 E. 146th St. OEC Japanese Express is chain out of Louisville, Ky. that sells fast-food Japanese food, including sushi. OMONI is not a chain but Kizuki is, with locations in four states in addition to Japan and Tawain. Juice Bar Carmel is opening at 1420 W. Main St. this summer. It’s a part of a Nashville, Tenn., brand that sells all-natural smoothies, juices, wraps and salads. Juice Bar has locations in more than 15 states.

Bar Louie is set to open at The Olivia, a Keystone-owned, mixed-use development on Old Meridian. Bar Louie has more than 100 locations nationwide. Mimi Blue Meatballs will open in the space formerly occupied by Crust Pizzeria at 12505 Old Meridian St. Mimi Blue Meatballs, owned by Michael Kosene, has another restaurant at 870 Massachusetts Ave. The restaurant serves a variety of turkey, beef and vegetarian meatballs with different sauces. Kosene’s father and uncle own Kosene & Kosene Residential, a real estate development company that owns the building. This is only the second location for the local restaurant. Crust is moving not too far away. The pizzeria is relocating to the space formerly occupied by Michelle’s Family Restaurant at 840 W. Main St. Crust is not a chain and only has one location. Meanwhile at The Bridges (116th and Illinois), there’s plenty of new tenants in the works. Two chains are coming. McDonald’s opened last week and Potbelly Sandwich Shop announces they will join the area as well. There are more than 400 locations for Potbelly Sandwich nationwide.

Blueprint for Improvement: 1930s bathroom with updated details Commentary by Larry Greene

After solutions:

After

The goal was to create more spacious, functional bathroom for the homeowners that reflected their 1930s home aesthetics. 1. The vanity is now housed on one wall, with two sinks on one longer run. 2. Custom mirrors were designed with a curve in the center to add a focal point. 3. A makeup sitting area was tucked under the sloped roof at the end of the vanity. 4. The shower and toilet spaces were switched to provide better functionality and circulation, ensuring a spacious, open shower design. 5. The details in the lighting fixtures, cabinetry, crystal knobs, and oil rubbed bronze finish coordinate with the home’s aesthetics. 6. The angled tile flooring draws your eye naturally to the main focus area of the updated bathroom.

Before Background info: This 1930s Meridian Kessler master bathroom in Indianapolis provided a fun challenge, as the new design had to keep with the original style of the home. It was in desperate need of both a functional and aesthetic update.

Before problems: The existing space had hunter green carpet on the floor, a tub that was never used and split vanity areas that made for an dysfunctional layout and very outdated look. It was time to replace the polished, brass fixtures and awkward spaces with updated fixtures and function.

At a recent gathering of friends of all ages, we shared our bucket lists, or if you could do anything in the world, what would aging it be? Four of the nine men and women had travel as their wish and all of them acknowledged that their children wouldn’t let them travel unaccompanied. Interesting how roles have reversed. This presents a business opportunity for enterprising “in betweens” who are in their 70s and in good health. Travel pals would solve the problem when family members aren’t available, and they might be more fun! One of the creative bucket list wishes was an elderly gentleman who wanted to return to his country of birth and youth, Germany, to reconnect with surviving schoolmates. He indicated that a romantic interlude would be a delightful possibility. Ah! Love is always in the air.

An article about retirees stated that we get happier naturally as we age because we find that our relationships with family and friends bring more joy than the striving of earlier years. Being rather than doing brings a sense of fulfillment. For instance, being a role model fills a need to do something for others. I’ve enjoyed hearing my elderly friends tell me about traveling with their grandchildren, especially without their parents to do the eye rolling! My recent college graduate grandchildren told me they would never forget our riverboat trip in the south of France. They each requested private time with me to chat about their lives. There isn’t anything better than that experience. Top of the bucket list!

Designer workshop series – The public is invited to connect with design professionals each month on various interior design topics. Join us for Patina vs. Perfection: Natural Stone Tips, Facts and Alternatives at 10:30 a.m. on May 17 at the Indiana Design Center. Lonna Heshelman of Santarossa Mosaic & Tile will present. RSVP via e-mail to concierge@IndianaDesignCenter.com. Gelatin for houseplants – Gelatin is a great source of nitrogen. Dissolve one envelope of unflavored gelatin in one cup of just-boiled water. Then add three cups of tap water. Let cool to room temperature and use the mixture to give your plants an energy boost once a month. You can use the same cloth up to 20 times before soaking

again. Use a brightly colored washcloth so it’s easy to spot among the laundry. Source: MrsHappyHomemaker.com Homemade air freshener – If you’re looking for a natural alternative to chemical-laden air fresheners. Combine a few drops of vanilla, almond or other extract with a cup of water. Pour into a spray bottle and spritz into the air. Source: BrightNest Planting tip – When planting your garden, you may need to calculate distances and depths for seeds or bulbs. So, turn the handles of your gardening tools into rulers. Mark off and number inches with a waterproof pen. Be sure to account for the number of inches from the tip of the tool to the start of the handle. Then, when you’re digging, there’s no need to stop and switch to a measuring tool to check depth or distance. Source: BottomLinePersonal.com

Great Mosque of Damascus with Jesus Minaret. (Photo by Don Knebel)

Jesus and the mosque Commentary by Don Knebel The Great Mosque of Damascus is considered by some Muslims to be the fourth most important mosque on earth, foltravel lowing mosques in Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. Surprising to many Christians, the Great Mosque, one of the largest in the world, honors both John the Baptist and Jesus. The Great Mosque lies in the center of Damascus on a site devoted to religious buildings since at least 1000 B.C., when it was the location of the temple of a Canaanite weather god. When the Romans captured Damascus in 64 B.C., they converted the temple to one honoring Jupiter. When Paul was baptized in Damascus in about 40 A.D., the temple honored a number of Roman gods and rivaled in splendor the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. In the late fourth century, when Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, the temple was converted to a cathedral. By the sixth century, the cathedral claimed to hold the severed head of John the Baptist.

“I am 70 years old. I have been taking medication for blood pressure and cholesterol. Needless to say, I was worried if I could start an exercise program safely. John Karesh made it a nice, gradual transition and I am surprised what I can do now. I feel better now than when I was in my 50s.” -Janice H.

When the Umayyads established an extensive Islamic caliphate in the late seventh century, they made Damascus their capital. They demolished the cathedral and constructed a mosque on the site. During construction, workers discovered a box they believed contained the head of John the Baptist, who is important to Muslims, and created a domed shrine for the head in the women’s prayer hall. The tallest of the Great Mosque’s three minarets is named for Jesus, whom Muslims revere as a prophet second in importance only to Muhammad. Many Muslim residents of Damascus believe that Jesus will return to their city at the end of time, where he will battle and defeat the Antichrist. In 2001, Pope John Paul II toured the Great Mosque because of its ties to Jesus and John the Baptist, becoming the first Pope to visit a mosque.
