Local resident’s course gives people an excuse to get muddy By Brandon Bowman Current in Carmel On June 26, Carmel resident Jeff Graves is giving everyone a good reason to get muddy with the Mudathlon. Mudathlon is a series of mud-based obstacles, and the whole event is described as “a mucking good time.” The four-mile course is made up of 30-foot mudslides, mud pits and cargo nets. The Mudathlon is challenging, but the goal is to be dirty. The course ends with a beer and some live music for every newly crowned “Mudathlete” on the course. Graves ran the course at White River Paintball in Anderson as it was completed. At the 30-foot natural mudslide, Graves had to ask himself what he was getting himself into. “The mud at the bottom was sucking the shoes right off my feet,” he said. “When they tell you to tighten your shoes at the beginning, they mean it.” Graves sees the Mudathlon as something different for running enthusiasts. Most of the events are held outside of the state. There have been 10 Mudathlons in the Midwest. “We are hoping to have future Mudathlons in Indiana so that everyone doesn’t need to travel as much,” Graves said. The course at White River Paintball in Anderson is focused on fun and if someone doesn’t want to attempt the obstacle they just continue on past it.

Spigelman to run against Brainard By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel Marnin Spigelman says he’s running against Mayor Jim Brainard to get a handle on some issues he claims are on the verge of becoming “out of control.” Spigelman announced last week that Spigelman he will compete with Brainard for the Republican nomination in the May 2011 primary election. A vocal critic of Carmel’s four-term mayor, Spigelman lost to Brainard in the November 2007 election, when he ran as an independent because he wanted to avoid taking votes from Brainard’s competitor in that year’s primary. This time, he’s getting involved earlier and claims he’ll provide a more fiscally conservative

style of leadership if elected. “A lot of the warnings I gave during the last campaign have come true,” he said. “At this point, the financial situation in Camel is dubious, indeed.” On his Web site, www.spigelman4carmelmayor.com, Spigelman says Brainard has “accomplished several positive directions for Carmel” but adds that the mayor’s decisions during the last six years “calls for new leadership to be installed to fend off a potential fiscal crisis.” He said the city’s large construction endeavors and resulting debt are a major concern of his, and he added that he fears continued heavy spending will result in increased taxes. “I’m running again to solve the problems before they get out of control,” he said.

It is our position that Exit 10 off I-69 is in demand of a filling station. With the boom of housing and commerce Hamilton Towne Center and Verizon Wireless Music Center have brought to Noblesville, citizens can find anything they might possibly need – that is, except a place to get gas. A trendy setting full of business suites and shops, Exit 10 has quickly earned potential to be one of the more popular stops for motorists commuting north and south along I-69. With a variety of attractions available to travelers right off the exit, an upper-end establishment to fill up the car would fit comfortably into the scenery while providing for a huge demand to the hundreds of shoppers and employees visiting the area every day. With all the steps that have been taken to make Exit 10 the place consumers look forward to visiting, a fuel station would assist more in the effort by attracting those who are just looking for a place to fill up. With gas stations along 90 percent of the undeveloped exits in the country, a place to fuel up at Exit 10 would be convenient and keep the tax dollars at home.

Slow death or fast

It is our position that the recent move by Gov. Mitch Daniels and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to again delay the long-promised and muchpostponed improvements on U.S. 31 across Hamilton County is as much as killing the project. Promised more than a decade ago, plans to improve the stretch of highway to limited-access comes not only from its important economic position but also from the loss of life claimed by overtaxed and under-designed intersections along the route. Speed, volume and design have all been taken into account through several studies, designs and redesigns over the past several years. And INDOT has promised action with each one. Yet other than keeping those folks employed, very little action has occurred. It is time for political leaders to live up to their promises. Daniels and his administration committed that this project would be well underway in 2011. If he cannot get the job done, both Carmel and Westfield have joined in offering to take over the project and do the work directly. The state should let them.

From the backshop Keystone could re-open this Saturday Welcome to Backshop, the pre-CarmelFest 2010 edition. Let’s get right to it: • We’ve been told that Keystone Parkway very well could re-open in time for Fourth of July activities. The city’s engineer’s office said it all depends on weather and other factors, but if the planets are aligned the portion of the parkway between East 126th Street and East Main Street could reopen as soon as Saturday. What a blessing that would be for the festival – especially for post-fireworks traffic flow on July 5. The opening otherwise will help relieve traffic congestion on Range Line Road and other thoroughfares, which will be welcomed. Short-term pain for long-term gain. • A couple, whose identities were unknown at press time, are scheduled to be married at 5:15 p.m. on July 4 on the south side of the fountain at Civic Square. CarmelFest has a fairly decent reputation for creating lasting relationships. Volunteers Alice Bryan and Chuck Howe, for example, met at the festival and now are married. We wish the next happy couple the best. • The Blue Moon Café, at the south end of the dazzling Indiana Design Center, has opened its doors for business. It’s wonderful to have another eatery in the Arts &

Brian Kelly & Steve Greenberg Design District, and it’s just as wonderful that Blue Moon has extended the opportunity for CarmelFest attendees to park in its lot during the event. Remember, too, that the underground garage at IDC is available, and neither site has a charge for parking. • Organizers of the Carmel Rotary Freedom Ball, scheduled for Saturday at the Ritz Charles, are anticipating visits from a couple former presidents. You read it here first: George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are to be in attendance. We won’t blow their cover, but the two gents who are going to portray the historic figures are, indeed, good sports.

Of savings accounts and rainy days COMMENTARY By Luci Snyder Recently, there has been much comment about the grand opening of the long-awaited Palladium: pro for the fantastic building and anticipated performers and con for the additional $2 million the City Council was asked to pay when the Carmel Redevelopment Commission was told that it was not legally able to do so. Like any unexpected bill that we all might receive, it had to be paid. Remember that Visa bill from your college freshman year, the one on the card to be used only for emergencies? What must we do? We take money out of our savings account and pay the bill and then reduce spending to replenish the account. Well, in municipal finance, the Rainy Day Fund is the savings account. In 2002, or “two councils ago,” councilor John Koven proposed that the council take advantage of the state Legislature’s permission to create a Rainy Day Fund. We all agreed and funded it with $500,000. By the time we left office, the balance was $1.3 million. When the next council came in, it needed

that money to pay for a lawsuit. That’s exactly why the account was created. However, during the subsequent four years, it did not replenish the money used and at the end of 2007, the balance in the city’s savings account was $6,335. When the current council took office in 2008, Clerk Treasurer Diana Cordray and I began to put money back in the fund as special distributions or other non-designated money was received and, at the end of 2009, the balance in the Rainy Day Fund was $4.1 million. With an additional county option income tax distribution in January, the balance was more than $7 million. Thank goodness we had that money when that $2 million bill came due, because the issue is not that you use your savings, the issue is that you must replenish it.

Racially speaking COMMENTARY By Terry Anker How do we have a thoughtful conversation about race in this fine country? And who has standing to discuss the issue? Many years ago (in fact, many, many), I was enjoying a seminar in law school (now the Michael Maurer School of Law – thank you Jane & Mickey) on the topic of race and the law. It was taught by our Constitutional law professor, himself a black American. A member of the class asserted that only whites could be racist. The view was that racism suggested the perceived superiority of that particular race over all others. The facts (that many whites did not participate in slavery, were from countries that never participated in it, and that many Africans of all races have owned slaves for centuries) were not relevant, because the argument presupposed that racism was not a product of slavery but rather that slavery was a product of racism. The debate that ensued was one of the most interesting I recall from my years at the study

of law. Sadly, the discourse was not a free one. Prejudices based largely in appearance meant that a comment from one would be severely discounted and a remark from another would be dismissed in wholesale. If these thinking, young, and engaged folks were unable to find common ground even in the law, how will we find it today? President Obama suggests we talk it out over beer. Others believe race will become irrelevant through implementation of forced ideals of social justice. I certainly don’t have the answer. And I know that the space allotted barely gets to the point. Isn’t it best if we look to our own hearts to determine how we will be labeled? And then let others think what they want? Aren’t they going to anyway? That section has been closed since May 10 while construction crews create a roundabout interchange at the Main Street intersection. Despite weather delays, Keystone Project Manager Jeremy Kashman said the road should still reopen at the end of the promised 45-day closure. “With all the rain we have had recently, they will have to play a little catch up,” he said. “Longer shifts will make up for any time they need to make up.” Construction will continue on Keystone Parkway throughout the summer. The Main Street interchange is part of the final phase of a three-year project to lower the grade of Keystone Parkway under six major intersections. When completed, the north-south traffic on Keystone Parkway will flow without traffic lights from 98th Street and 146th Street.

Gas leak of ‘08 impacting plans for new Shell station By Danielle Turnbull Current in Carmel Measures are being taken to ensure that a new gas station in Carmel does not repeat the history of its predecessor at the same site. Construction will begin in the next two weeks for a new Shell station at the site of a former Marathon station on the corner of W. Main Street and Guilford Road. The previous station suffered a gas leak in 2008, and 8,000 gallons of gasoline were leaked into the soil surrounding the station. Surrounding businesses lost customers, some suffering so badly they had to close temporarily. However, one nearby business owner is not concerned this time around. John Mikesell, owner of Izzy’s Place – A Dog Bakery, said he believes the spill in 2008 was taken care of and adds the new business will be good for the area. “They did a good job of cleaning out,” Mikesell said. “I think we need a little market and a gas station here.” A failed flange seal caused the leak and was not uncovered until a significant amount of gas had been released in the ground, said Jim Koch, director of real estate for Tharp Investments, Inc., the company leasing the site. The

fueling system was removed following the incident and a large portion of the parking lot for the shopping center was shoveled up to uncover the spoiled soil. The soil was removed and replaced, and the area was then repaved. “The owner of the property, the new fuel jobber and the new operator are committed to insuring this cannot and does not happen again,” Koch said in an e-mail. Extensive changes will be made to the infrastructure of the station this time around, Koch said. A new modern self-contained, self-testing system is going to be installed with the new Shell station. A double-walled fiberglass storage tank will exist, creating space between two walls that will monitor the gas, detecting minor leaks before they become serious. Piping is also double-walled and flexible, creating a sealed system, and if even one fluid ounce of gas is found in one of the various vaults, an alarm will go off and the system will shut down, preventing a leak. “What this all means is that unless there is a catastrophic subterranean event, the chances of such a release as occurred in 2008 are infinitesimal,” Koch said in an e-mail.

I was caught red-handed COMMENTARY By Jeff Worrell The members of the Spark Button committee got to experience “guilty until proven innocent” this week. On Friday, I received an ominous-sounding e-mail from Mr. Larry Delaney, deputy director of the Indiana State Gaming Commission. He needed to speak with me about a written complaint he received questioning the legality of giving away a cash prize of $500 based on the purchase of a Spark Button. YIKES! I had the weekend to let my mind wander. Unfortunately my imagination conjured up visions of chain gangs, orange jump suits and other unpleasant thoughts about life behind bars. Or maybe I get off with a suspended sentence and time served, but I have to endure the humiliation of a tearful, televised public apology asking for forgiveness for the sins I have committed against my community. A public flogging, and a life marked by the scarlet letter of fundraising shame. All weekend long, I kept trying to figure out which “I” went without a dot or which “T” I carelessly forget to cross. Anxious to face my accusers, Mr. Delaney and I connected, and I prepared myself for the worst. Fortunately, Deputy Director Delaney was professional, competent, helpful and human. The evidence against me included my columns about Spark Buttons, our ads and even the pic-

ture of 6-week-old Davis Crain, our first Spark Button customer in Current In Carmel three weeks ago. The evidence seemed indisputable and the case air tight. I had been caught redhanded trying to raise money for the fireworks. And then he asked me for my license number. “Uh … I have one, I just don’t have it memorized, but look under Rotary Club of Carmel,” I said as respectfully as possible. “Here is is,” Delaney replied, “Indiana Charity Gaming Raffle License #120051. Did you know this number must be on every document, communication and memorandum involving your fund-raising event?” That was my undoing. Displaying the license number was the “T” I forgot to cross. Got it. 120051. 120051. 120051. No jail time, thanks to Carmel Rotarians Brian Rhea and Kirk Fosnaugh for being detailorientated and having filled out the tedious paperwork months ago to make sure Spark Buttons are legal. And to the anonymous whistle blower, I am raising money to memorialize the day you received your right and freedom to ruin my weekend. Now, how about buying a Spark Button and we will call it even? Central Park receives IWF certification COMMENTARY By Gary Doxtater Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation’s Central Park has met all the requirements for the Wildlife Friendly Park Certification and received this distinction during a ceremony last week. The Central Park Wildlife Friendly Certification event was held June 18 near the Monon Community Center. This event recognized the park as the first wildlife friendly park in Indiana, and the Carmel Clay Park and Recreation Board has set a goal to certify the rest of the parks as soon as possible. “We are pleased that the Indiana Wildlife Federation has decided to certify our parks as a model for the state, and it is fitting that the ceremony takes place in Carmel’s Central Park as it has quickly become a featured spot in the community to enjoy a variety of wildlife, plants and landcapes,” said Parks Director Mark Westermier. The Indiana Wildlife Federation’s Board of Directors is excited about this type of partnership, which can play an important role in fulfilling IWF’s goal of educating the public in protecting and promoting wildlife habitat enhancement for tomorrow. This program was developed by the IWF to provide wildlife habitats in many different types of land uses, such as backyards, school

yards, industrial parks, housing developments, farms and places of worship. The goal for this certification is to design into the property’s landscape the basic necessities of wildlife-food, water, cover and a place to raise young. Central Park has been an ideal property to do this as it has a multiple-use recreational theme and a diverse land use to create the special needs of many species of wildlife. There are a variety of different types of native species of vegetation present, which can be supplemented with other native plants that benefit wildlife. IWF biologists have provided guidance to the technical park specialists on how to conduct baseline studies to record the existing plants and animals in the park. From this survey information, a design for a threeyear program for the Central Park Wildlife Management Plan was created. This baseline information is the major part of the certification process that identifies the biological characteristics of the Park and a plan for long-term management to maintain the Wildlife Friendly Park Certification. By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel The Carmel City Council is proposing a significant shakeup of its district boundaries. The process has been difficult, but City Council President Rick Sharp said the proposed changes will benefit constituents in the long term. Carmel’s annexation of Southwest Clay becomes official July 27, and that expansion is forcing the council to change its district map. The annexation agreement between the two sides mandates that Southwest Clay be incorporated into a council district while Sharp remaining fully intact. That fact, along with some preexisting issues, has made the process challenging for the council and will force greater changes to the district map. Sharp said the proposal, expected to be up for a vote next month, best achieves the council’s goals. “We had two goals and an underlying premise, and that was that we could not break up Southwest Clay,” he said. “It probably would have been easier to redistrict if that hadn’t been a requirement.” Those two goals, Sharp said, were to balance district populations and make the five sections more consistent in shape and physical size. In the proposed plan scheduled to have been formally intro-

duced at last night’s council meeting, district numbers would be dropped in favor of descriptors. No current council member would be in the new district including Southwest Clay, named Southwest. Sharp would fall in the Northwest district, Councilman Eric Seidensteckir would represent Central and Councilwoman Luci Snyder would cover Southeast. However, the plan places two council members, John Accetturo and Joe Griffiths, Snyder together in the proposed Northeast district. Because Southwest Clay must be permitted to select its own representative in 2011, Sharp said this situation wasn’t avoidable. “It was going to happen,” he said. “It was just a matter of how and who.” Sharp added that it was mathematically possible to pit any two current council members against each other. In order to prevent any undue political influences from affecting the redistricting efforts, the council hired consulting firm Wabash Scientific in March to help it objectively achieve its two stated goals. The council went through this same process just four years ago, but Sharp said facing these political issues with city elections right around the corner made the task much more difficult this time. Still, he added that the council was nearing the point at which redistricting would need to be done again, even without the annexation. “Right now the districts are horribly unbalanced … and it’s primarily a factor of growth,” he said. Currently, Sharp’s District 1 is the largest in physical size and population. He represents the fastest-growing area of the city, but other districts’ constituencies have been shrinking over the past sev-

eral years. The proposed redistricting plan would level the districts’ population and homogenize the five areas as much as possible. The council is hoping to approve this plan later this month before Southwest Clay officially joins the city. Any new district map would not go into effect until January. In fact, Sharp would represent the residents of Southwest Clay for 18 months until the area can elect its own representative. The reason for the haste, Snyder said, is to allow voters, especially those in Southwest Clay, to become familiar with their new districts in time for the upcoming elections. “If we put this off until the end of the year, as we could do, that wouldn’t be fair,” she said. “We want to do this fast.” Sharp said the proposed plan accounts for future growth, based on current trends, and barring some unforeseen changes, he said it should be several years before the council will have to undergo this process again. Even if the 1.6-square-mile area of Home Place is annexed, which Sharp said isn’t at all imminent, the proposal would allow for those residents to be divided into three surrounding districts.

The interior design crystal ball months, are gaining a foothold. All of these tones are being served against a background of grey for a cool summer palette. Scale took the stage with size and impact. Even the most traditional pattern, when morphed into over-sized scale, provided drama. Exceptionally large floral, plaids and damasks stole the show. Stacking and layering was spotted everywhere at Maison et Objet, offering a “Princess and the Pea” fairytale-like feel to home decor. The global nature of news and culture has impacted the path of design. The reports shared that details such as beading, bottle caps, recycled wire and screen-printed native prints were making their way onto furniture, accessories and hand-woven baskets. The fusion of India and pop culture was another direction seen on pillows with photographic images of street scenes and detailed embroidery in updated cir-

Commentary By Vicky Earley Ah, Paris! It is the quintessential city of haute couture, the birthplace of style, and the incubator for trends. Maison et Objet, the Parisian home decor trade show, is, undoubtedly, the debutante ball for fashion and design momentum. Attendance at this show is high on my bucket list, but I must live vicariously for now and simply glean information about the introductions that will eventually cross the pond – from sources who did attend. It appears the big color story was in the blue family. Pale baby blue to deep shades of indigo indicated a cooler direction for spring/summer. Turquoise is still strong in shades, ranging from soft shades of robin’s egg blue to deep-saturated, gem-like turquoise. Green has gone chartreuse, while the pale orchid and lavender shades, which have been testing the water for the past six

cles and swirls. Gardening in urban settings is a trend supported with terrariums and vertical hanging planters. Not a stick of stained wood could be found in the 3,000 showrooms of this international interior style show. Raw and reclaimed wood finishes, bleached woods and painted woods were the foundation pieces. All the finishes, even the painted ones, had a grey-washed undertone. Linen and hand woven textiles were found used for everything from upholstery to bedding. There was elegance in the simple nature of these fabrics, especially when adorned with monograms and embroidered motifs. While some of these trends have been spotted in the U.S., some are still in the infancy stages. Regardless, it is safe to consider the Maison Object Trade show as a crystal ball of our interior design future. As always, trends a just that: trends. ‘Jack-of-all-trades’ designer brings talents to IDC By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel In the design industry, Jay Slifer dabbles in just about any form imaginable. In reality, the experienced designer does more than merely dabble. He’s an accomplished multidisciplinary designer in the fields of graphic design, product and furniture design, interior architecture, Web design and even marketing. The new tenant at Carmel’s Indiana Design Center admits he’s a jack of all trades and master of none, but his versatility is beginning to benefit him more than he imagined. “I probably should have focused on something in my late 20s and not been all over the place,” he said. “It’s like my mom said, ‘When anybody asks you to do something just say you know how to do it and figure it out later.’” Slifer has gained a number skills following this logic, either letting his natural abilities do the teaching or picking up tips from his fellow designers specializing in different areas. It takes only a quick glance at his résumé to get an idea of Slifer’s various talents. He has designed for clients such as Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Calvin Klein, American Express and Cuisinart, among others. He’s designed flatware, lighting,

picture frames and even the tables on which they rest. For a residential customer he can design the room that will hold these items, and for a business selling these goods, he can design product packaging, build a Web site and whip up a marketing plan. In a time when more customers are looking for a one-stop shop, Slifer said his business is benefiting. “The way people are developing their businesses is catching up with my business model,” he said. “That’s a product of necessity of the changing design world. You have to wear a lot of hats.”

No, I don't know, OK? COMMENTARY By Brandie Bohney There’s a speaking trend going on right now that I dislike. It’s common among teenagers and young adults. The trend is this: After stating something amazing, weird, fascinating, obscure or otherwise interesting, the speaker waits for a response from the audience – oral or visual – and then adds, “I know, right?” Do you hear that? It’s me pounding my head against the desk in front of me. This probably shouldn’t irritate me to the level that it does, but it reminds me of an interesting language phenomenon most prevalent among women: asking permission for requests and other statements. Let me explain. How many times have you heard someone make a request or a statement, and then follow it with, “OK?”? For example, “I need you to clean your room, OK?” No, not OK. The problem here is that the statement isn’t a question or an option. It’s a requirement. But if you add the “OK?” to the end, it becomes an option. And it’s a weak way of communicating. The same is true with, “I know, right?” It’s almost like asking permission for the story to be amazing or funny or ridiculous or whatever: “I know it’s amazing/funny/ridiculous, don’t I?” More appropriate would be something along the lines of, “Can you imagine that?” or “Isn’t that awful/hilarious/crazy?” Unlike the “OK?” issue, “I know, right?”

seems to be widely used by members of both genders. Normally, this type of wishy-washy language is used most frequently by girls and women because of some underlying thinking that it’s more feminine to ask rather than state what you need. While it may be considered, in certain circumstances, more polite to ask for things (“Would you pass me the sugar, please?”), when you need something, it’s not impolite to just state it (“Dan, please make 10 copies of these brochures.”). Adding “OK?” is totally unnecessary, and it cripples the request. Men tend to have fewer problems using strong language (and I’m not talking about swearing here, folks) because they are, in general, raised with the idea that strength is tantamount to masculinity, so that rubs off in the way they speak. Next time you’re at a restaurant with a mixed-gender group, listen to how men and women order their food. Men tend to state what they want (“I’ll have the surf and turf ”), and women tend to ask for what they want (“Could I have a Caesar salad, please?”). In any case, I’d like to see “I know, right?” eliminated from the vernacular of, well, everyone.

COMMENTARY By Chef Michael Vlasich The first fruit out of the ground, from the vine, onto our table and into our mouths each year? The only one with seeds on the outside, considered in the rose family, but not fruit? It’s almost time for us to indulge. We see them ripening; the bees have already done their job of pollinating the flowers. The rains have gone, and the sun is beating down, giving the plants, flowers and buds everything needed to grow and ripen. Each solstice from spring to summer, I write of strawberries as the passage of cold to warmth. The gardens begin to flourish with their bounties of harvest, ready to be robbed by the animals in your yard, especially fond of these sweet treats. The following are additional facts yet to be printed by in columns; I hope you find them as intriguing as I do. The etymology of the name “strawberry” is still basically unknown. One theory says that in the 19th century, some English children picked the berries, strung them on grass straws and then marketed them to be sold in town as “straws of berries.” The other theory says it was derived from placing straw around the growing plants to help protect the ripening fruit and fragile young stalks. Strawberries are grown in every U.S. state and in all provinces in Canada. In California alone, there are more than 23,000 acres planted each year, which yield more than 1 billion pounds of edible crops. If the berries were picked and laid berry to berry, in a line, it would wrap around the world 15 times. Strawberries have become very popular, and in most major polls, they are voted the second most beloved natural flavor behind, can you guess? Chocolate. When voting for favorite fruit flavor, strawberries generally win hands down,

Directions: In a shaker, mash 2 basil sprigs and 1/4 cup sugared strawberries (mix 1 pint sliced berries with 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar; let stand 15 minutes). Fill the shaker with ice and add 1 1/2 ounces vodka and 1 ounce fresh lemon juice. Shake, pour into a large glass, top with 4 ounces soda water, and stir. GRILLED CHICKEN WITH MANGO SALSA Makes 4 servings

Students at Harvard discovered that just a few ingredients, such as garlic and chopped fresh rosemary, lend a heady fragrant aroma to a humble lamb chop. An instant-read thermometer is crucial for determining when to remove the lamb from the grill (from 140 degrees for rare to 170 degrees for well done), since doneness is a matter of personal preference.Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1 chop)

Ingredients: • 1 mango (12 oz.), peeled and finely chopped • 1 tbsp. lime juice • 1 tbsp. orange juice • 1 1/2 tsp. orange juice • 1/4 small onion, finely chopped • 3/4 tsp. salt • 6 drops hot-pepper sauce • 2 tsp. chopped fresh cilantro • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves (6 ounces each) • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil • 1/2 tsp. salt • 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper

COMMENTARY By Chris Lloyd In the last years of his life, the great Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy was the subject of his own religion/cult. He died not at his comfortable rustic home but at a remote railway station. These two historical facts are the jumping-off point for «The Last Station,» a fictionalized account of Tolstoy›s last months. It's quite doubtful that Vladimir Chertkov (Paul Giamatti), the leader of the Tolstoyans, actually sent a young disciple (James McAvoy) to spy on the writer›s family. Or that Tolstoy›s wife, Sofya, was quite the raging cauldron of anger and self-pity that Helen Mirren portrays her to be. Tolstoy himself is something of a minor player in his own story. He›s played with sly wit and veiled egotism by Christopher Plummer. Late in life, Tolstoy came to reject the comforts

his riches had earned his family, and embraced a pastoral philosophy based on love and communal property. Sofya, though, sees his desire to name the Tolstoyan movement as the main beneficiary in his will as an abandonment of their nearly 50 years of marriage. As unlikely as writer/director Michael Hoffman›s version of events is, it does make for a wonderful chance for this talented cast to fume and weep and otherwise emote expansively. Movie: B

Everyone tell 10 people COMMENTARY By David Cain Recently, I shared a link from a campaign on Facebook. I had received an e-mail around a political issue in which the goal was to get a petition signed. The e-mail was sent to 3,500 people. With each send, the open rate of the email decreased. The number of visitors to the companion Web site also slowly dwindled as did the number of people signing the petition. After a month, I clicked the “share” button in the email message I had received. I shared the message, which dropped a link with a comment, into my Facebook account. I’ve only got 150 friends in Facebook, and I’m not active with this network. Still, I had 16 “friends” comment on the link and comment on my simple message that accompanied the link, “If you live in Indiana, you should check this out.” All this activity occurred within 30 minutes of sharing the link. All ages responded, from my 21-year-old sister-in-law to my 76-year-old father. It’s also worth noting that not all of the comments were positive. Two people disagreed and presented an opposing viewpoint. The next day I checked the Web site statistics and during the hour I shared the link, which was several days after I got the e-mail, there was a spike of 10 additional unique visits and

10 new signatures on the petition. Sixteen of my friends made comments and 10 visited and signed. All this activity sparked by one 42-year-old sharing a link in one social network where he has 150 friends. What if 50 people did that? What if instead of sending an email to 3,500 people we simply asked the 250 people affiliated with the campaign to share the link in all their social networks? That is “the network effect.” People want to connect with people and they believe other people most. A first-person voice is always preferred to a company message. And while not everyone is interested in social networks, these networks and the network effect can’t be ignored. Everyone’s heard of them and that alone makes them influential. Facebook for me is a lot like church. I don’t go there as often as I should and I’m certainly not as active as I should be, but it appears I still have a relationship with the people I know there. COMMENTARY By Gary Hubbard Going to Europe for vacation this summer? According to the Consumer Electronics Association, the average household has 24 electronic gadgets and many of them travel with us. Making sure you have everything you need before you depart will save you a lot of money and aggravation. Let’s start with power. Make sure everything that you plan on plugging in has a voltage range of 110-240V and frequency range of 50-60Hz. Laptop computers, portable DVD players, cell phone chargers and most consumer electronics are generally capable of switching to the higher voltage used in Europe, but items like curling irons aren’t. If any of your gadgets don’t have the higher ratings, you will need to purchase a voltage converter that will “step down” the voltage from 240 to 110. The next item you will need plenty of are wall-plug adapters. The wall plugs in Europe have two round holes, so the slotted plugs we use in the U.S. won’t fit. In my past travels, this was the one item we never seemed to have enough of. Most of us charge up all our devices at night at the same time (laptop, netbook, cell phone, digital camera, portable game player, etc.) so make sure you count how many gadgets you plan on charging simultaneously before you buy the adapters. If you have a lot of devices and extra room, you should consider packing a power strip, as many hotel rooms in older European hotels have few outlets (you will need a three-pronged US-toEurope adapter for the power strip as well). As for cell phones, in virtually all cases, using your U.S. carrier’s “roam” option while in Europe will be the most expensive option (as much as $1.50 per minute), so when in Rome, don’t

If you have the time, purchase an “unlocked” GSM phone before you leave (Craigslist or eBay), or buy a cheap pay-as-you-go phone once you get there (the safest option), or check with friends who travel abroad to see if they already own a travel phone. Prepaid SIM cards are sold by virtually every merchant in most European countries, so you can pay as you go and control your cellular expense instead of getting a big surprise on your bill once you get home. In addition, if you don’t already have a Skype account, get one and install the Skype software on your laptop and your smartphone, then buy $10 worth of credits. You can make Skype-toSkype calls for free (get anyone you want to call while on your trip setup with an account before you leave as well) or pay @ 2 cents per minute to call any standard land line or cell phone even back in the U.S. Anytime your laptop is connected to the Internet, you can use it as a phone via Skype. To use Skype on your smartphone, you must be connected to the Internet via WiFi. I’d use the unlocked cell phone for local calls and Skype for long-distance calls. Finally, download a hotspot locater app on your smartphone so you can easily find free and low cost WiFi.

The World Cup is on? Hand me my vuvuzela COMMENTARY By Mike Redmond Well, the World Cup is up and running, literally. Lot of running in that game. Seems they’d get smart, strap on skates and play it on ice. Anyway, what little watching I have done has left me with the distinct impression that this soccer stuff is going to catch on, one of these days. I’m just kidding. I know soccer is the planet’s main game. I’m actually a big fan, and I like the World Cup almost as much as I like the hockey cup playoffs named for Stanley. I like the purity of soccer – this is the ball, those are your feet, over that way is the goal, have at it and try not to (a.) use your hands or (b.) kill each other. Now, I can’t say I understand everything about it. Goals, for instance. I know they’re few and far between, but is it really necessary for the guy who scores a goal to run around the stadium doing all that hugging? I’m not kidding. He kicks the ball into the net and he’s mobbed by all his teammates on the field. Then he runs over to the bench and he’s mobbed by all his teammates there. Then he goes across the field and hugs all those guys. Then he runs up in the stands and hugs Sections 107 through 121, Rows A through NN. Then he puts his shirt

back on and they start playing again. You never see this sort of behavior in other events, such as, oh, bridge tournaments. Another thing you do not see, or more rightly hear, is that ceaseless racket in the background of every broadcast. It’s made by something called a vuvuzela (when it’s not being called a lepatata) and basically, it’s a horn that makes a sound described as a giant hive of very unfriendly bees. Or bees flat, since B-flat is the note produced. Although the presently annoying version is South African, you see horns like this at soccer games all over the world except, of course, pee wee league games at public parks on Saturday mornings, although I suppose it’s just a matter of time before some parent shows up with one.

Which, now that I think about it, might be far preferable to some of the things parents shout at kiddie league games of all varieties. One of things I enjoy about the World Cup is the fact that vuvuzela players from every corner of the globe descend on it. You see every variety of human available, and a few that I suspect haven’t yet been categorized by the anthropologists. I used to work with a sports editor who made fun of soccer. If it wasn’t part of his big four – football, basketball, golf, auto racing – it was to be mocked. I guess he reasoned that the only real sports were the ones he considered American (never mind that golf originated in Scotland and race cars are worldwide). But I also worked with a wire editor who reminded young reporters like me that most of the world is not American, not white, not male, and doesn’t speak English. He could have thrown in something about most of the world playing soccer, too, but we have the World Cup to remind us of that. Hand me my vuvuzela.

There’s nothing better than a satisfying backyard transformation Commentary By Randy Sorrell This wonderful Carmel family hoped to transform an outlived backyard space housing a large play set in a sea of mulch into a small escape that family and friends could casually enjoy. A formal house nestled in a quasi-woodland setting presented a fantastic opportunity to develop a retreat in partnership with nature, yet explored the modern elements often found in our Hamilton County neighborhoods. Phase 1 provided a stunning update to the premium pressure-treated deck by opening up the space with stylish black aluminum spindles, wider transition steps and a redesigned floor plan. While we prefer lively synthetics, this project reminded me of the virtues of real wood. Horizontally inspired facia breaks up the cavernous void under the second story deck, which the climbing hydrangea is quickly consuming. Hidden access doors open to an appreciated storage area. Phase 2 centered on the natural lower living area with an Indiana limestone seat wall boldly retaining the woods edge. Natural fieldstone boulders serve to break up the wall and provide a little drama. We debated the patio floor surface for a few weeks and eventually embraced an edgy, compacted dusty limestone material framed by an informal tumbled brick paver. You’ve likely seen this cost-friendly surface employed on the Broad Ripple canal walk-

Knock out hosta-munching slugs with a ‘substantial’ leaf COMMENTARY By Holly Funk During the early months of summer, a hosta enthusiast might think: Am I gardening? Or feeding slugs? Unlike feeding birds, feeding slugs is rather disheartening. Large holes in the delicate leaves of hostas absolutely spoil their appearance. Funny how the size of the holes is directly proportionate to the size of each fat and happy slug in your garden, huh? Hostas thrive in a shady, moist environment, as do slugs. And because their leaves are so close to the soil surface, they’re extremely susceptible to damage. Through the night, slugs feed their slimy way through our gardens and that makes it hard to hand pick them because gardeners are sleeping. Some people swear by jar lids filled with beer sunk into the soil surface, but I can’t help thinking “Waste beer on dreadful slugs? Why should they have all the fun?” Or, I’ve heard using a vinegar solution twice in May, which kills young slugs. But I’ve found that the key to slug-free hostas is the careful selection of resistant varieties. Some varieties resist damage and it’s all in the substance of the leaf. Note that some hosta leaves are more sub-

stantial than other, more papery-leaved hostas. There is a distinct difference. Blue-leaf hostas, which are really a gray-green color, (gardeners love to say blue when it’s clearly not, like we’re colorblind) typically have a thicker, more substantial leaf. Some great blues are Elegans, Halcyon and Love Pat, all of which resist slug damage. Blue hostas prefer denser shade than yellow leaf hostas, which can actually tolerate quite a bit of sun. Several yellow hostas have substantial leaves like Sum and Substance. See, substance is even in the name. Also check out Sunpower. You’ll be pleased. Besides keeping slugs at bay, these hostas are a carefree and hardy garden plant. You can divide and share them, and some of them have incredibly fragrant flowers. Look to the large white flowers for fragrance, as the lavender flowers are less fragrant. And enjoy gardening again…without feeding the slugs.
