Attorney may seek federal investigation in CHS case

Current in Carmel It is believed that lightning caused the fire that burned much of the Weston Shoppes last week. The strip mall, at the intersection of 106th Street and Michigan Road, had 12 units, but the majority of the building has been destroyed. It is expected that the entire structure will be demolished and rebuilt within this year. Photo by Brandon Bowman

Scott Laskowski, 19, is facing three misdemeanor counts of criminal recklessness. However, Turner has claimed since a grand jury handed down these charges that the alleged crimes call for felony charges – not misdemeanors. The charges stem from several alleged incidents of assault said to have occurred on a school bus and in a CHS locker room.

OUR VIEWS

It is our opinion that a time of crisis is not a time to push a political agenda. The tragic oil spill in the Gulf has grabbed the attention of a nation. Never before have Americans seen such widespread destruction of nature and livelihoods. Our leaders seem unprepared and reluctant to deal with this crisis. Although BP, a privately held company, is responsible for the event and consequences, the impact on such a huge part of the American economy and its natural resources deserves a federal government response. The response, thus far, has been one of delay, blame and political opportunism. As Americans living on the Gulf Coast question how they will survive, our president presented an agenda of new clean energy. One is reminded of sugarplums and pipe dreams. What is needed now is action. Americans want to plug the oil leak. Clean up the oil. Get workers back to work on the oil rigs. Get the fishermen, shrimpers and everyone else who rely on the gulf for their income back to work. Blame can be placed later. They say timing is everything. Now is not the time to give sway to political donors.

Growth is good?

It is our position that the predatory nature of tax incentives and other bribes to lure business from one municipality to another does not benefit taxpayers. Instead, the incentives arms race only serves to escalate in both tensions and expense. Yet we have been conditioned to accept that all growth is good and that competition for growth, by extension, must be good. Businesses waste away without the benefit of the market. And some, such as pro sports teams, feel entitled to demand taxpayer support or, like naughty kids, threaten to take their ball home if they don’t get their way. Municipalities are all too happy to support the habit. Is all growth necessarily good? Should taxpayers subsidize private enterprise? When public officials compete with each other, using taxes to entice new or expanding businesses, the process put in motion benefits no one. We believe communities should use a business-friendly tax structure, appropriate zoning, high-quality infrastructure and an educated work force to attract and keep desirable enterprises.

From the backshop The Why Store will Rock the District Rock the District, sponsored in part by Current in Carmel and scheduled for July 24 in the Carmel Arts & Design District, has landed long-time Indiana favorite rockers The Why Store as the headlining act. The one-day music festival enters its fourth year, having featured John McLaughlin (2007 and 2008) and Dave Barnes (2009). The Why Store, which last year released Vim, a new album loaded with fresh material, still features Chris Shaffer a forceful, expressive singer/songwriter with a repertoire of more than 130 original songs. The band has been re-tooled by Shaffer, who does not plan The Why Store’s sets, but rather takes whatever fits the moment and goes with it. It will be the icing on the cake for a day that features local and regional musicians throughout. We urge you to attend this great event and, while you’re at it, support the district’s merchants. ••• As you might know, Mayor Jim Brainard last week unanimously was elected as one of 13 trustees of the United States Conference of Mayors. As a trustee, he will make up part of the executive committee that constitutes the leadership of the organization and de-

Brian Kelly & Steve Greenberg termines its direction. It’s a great validation from the “outside” of his vision and strategy for keeping our city moving forward. ••• One of our spies was dining in the district with his wife recently, and, as is his custom, was making friends left and right. He encountered two couples – one from Louisville, the other from Chicago – that said they traveled to Carmel “to see what it is all about. They had read and heard about us, and they had to see it for themselves.” He said Carmel got high marks from its guests. More validation that the city is headed in the right direction.

Facebook, LinkedIn and others may be wonders to many, but how have they changed the nature of human interaction? At a recent conference, I took the time to attend a session on how to take advantage of these new forms of communication. Much of the talk centered on how to get people to notice one’s posts, how to use text messaging to cut in line in front of others waiting for attention from the recipient, and how to get one’s message out across multiple electronic platforms. Do we really need this much attention? If I Tweet and text and blog and e-mail and call and skywrite to get attention, am I important or simply an electronic narcissist? Do I really have that much to say? And do my friends and family really need to read it?

COMMENTARY By Terry Anker The migratory patterns of modern Americans have to rival those of any culture in the history of humankind. Once, it was assumed that our kids would mature to adulthood, go off to college, and then come home and marry their high school sweetheart and settle down – in the city, if not the neighborhood, where they had grownup. Now it is not uncommon to find families in which every sibling lives in a different city or even state. Even international relocations are commonplace. And the permutations are exacerbated by the parents. We marry, divorce and marry again – each time adding complexity to our lives. The buzzwords “social media” serve to label the electronic medium spawned, in part, by these new living arrangements. Today, we remain in touch with folks from high school even though we haven’t been in our hometown in decades. We talk to extended family across miles with the same ease that we speak to our co-worker in the next office.

Commentary By Danielle Wilson As my almost 2-year-old niece threw her third tantrum of the morning in response to her already 2-year-old cousin’s Barbie theft, it occurred to me I could get good money for them on the black market. Kidding! I really like their parents, and they would not be happy with me if I up and sold their daughters right out from under them. But seriously, 2-year olds are bratty little creatures most of the time, with only a few redeeming qualities. I’ve really had to focus on these the last few months so as not to follow through with my illegal baby scam. Here’s what I’ve come up with. 1. They are cute. I’ve yet to meet an ugly child between the ages of 18 and 36 months. Even my twins, who were born looking like bald albino eaglets, were quite adorable by their second birthday. And one of the aforementioned nieces? She transformed from an 87-year-old man with a receding hairline to a Gerber baby with beautiful locks upon turning two. 2. They are cheaply entertained. Two-year olds do not need Xboxes, Nintendo DS’, or even creepy-eyed baby dolls that require real diapers. My nieces can play for hours with a five-cent bouncy ball, a copy of the New York Times and a discarded Reebok. 3. They still take naps. ‘Nough said. 4. They talk funny. Because their speech is still developing, two year olds have a unique propensity to say words incorrectly, inject an adorable lisp, and/or repeat words they shouldn’t. This can make for some hilarious moments, especially in public. “So sorry Father, I think she’s referring to a type of boat, a ship.” 5. They think clean-up time is a game, simply because it has

P

r i v a t e

B

its own song! 6. They’re small. If my middle-schooler dug his feet in and absolutely refused to take a shower, there’s really nothing I can physically do to force him. But a two year old? I can lift my niece up and off the floor with one hand and probably jog five miles with her in my pocket if I had to. 7. They haven’t figured out that there is nothing whatsoever binding them to the time-out chair. 8. They don’t have a fashion opinion yet. My daughters won’t let me within 10 feet of their closets when they are getting dressed, and heaven forbid I should protest a selected mini-skirt/blouse combo. But a two year old? I could put a floral sundress on a little boy and he would probably twirl for hours. 9. They’ll eat most anything. Chicken, peas, crayons, cat food. As long as it’s small and colorful, they’ll put it in their mouths. 10. Again, they are super cute. My younger niece can’t say my name, so she just calls “AnYell” when she needs me. And despite what that nickname implies about my vocal levels, whenever she says it, I’m putty in her little grubby hands. So yes, the terrible twos are real, but they don’t have to be the end of a beautiful relationship with your child. Just stay focused on his good points and remembered that this is all just training for when you’re really going to want to sell them: high school. Peace out.

Library seeks donations for sculpture By Matt Werner Current in Carmel The Carmel Clay Public Library is raising money to purchase one of the bronze sculptures currently on loan and being displayed at the library. The Library Sculpture Fund has already received a few donations for the statue, named “Golden Morning.” The sculpture of a golden retriever named Bob playing in leaves was voted as the favorite by library patrons. While a public campaign has not been officially kicked off, the library is accepting donations to help purchase the $24,000 sculpture. “Since the sculpture has become so popular, we want to provide the public with an opportunity to make an outright donation or make a donation in honor or memory of a family member or friend,” said Beth Smietana, communications manager at the CCPL. The library is not limited to only purchasing “Golden Morning” and hopes to raise enough money to add more. The sculptures range in price from just a few hundred dollars to as much as hundreds of thousands of dollars. “We have received many comments from patrons who take pleasure in seeing the sculptures,” Smietana said. “These works of art add a beautiful new dimension to the library environment and we hope to add several in the coming years. We would like to have perhaps one or two

Wife of performing arts director makes her mark, too COMMENTARY By Jeff Worrell The “other” Libman wasted little time since moving to Carmel less than a year ago and has given significant amounts of her time as a volunteer to several well-known civic organizations. Keitha Libman, wife of Center For The Performing Arts Executive Director Steven Libman, is giving her time and talent to a community that she has barely had enough time to call home. After joining the Rotary Club of Carmel, she immediately took responsibility for a new club project designed to recognize civic-minded high school students with a new scholarship opportunity. The Rotary Club of Carmel is trying to encourage a habit of community service by rewarding students with financial assistance to help continue their education past high school. Rotarians are known for their attitude of “service above self ” and through the Student Service Award program, young adults with the same aptitude will now benefit. Lucky for Ben Cook that Keitha moved to Carmel and spearheaded this important program. Cook, a Carmel High School senior, walked away with a cool $2,000 check from the

Rotary Club at a recent luncheon. Ben received not just the money, but strong approval from an adoring crowd of Carmel business leaders at a recent Rotary meeting for his work with Soles4Souls. Soles4Souls was initially started after the tsunami in Asia and then Hurricane Katrina. Now, the charity is an ongoing concern raising money to provide footwear to people across the world. Ben’s story of volunteerism will be featured in this column in a future article. Keitha is a great example of someone that jumps right in and is willing to provide leadership and hard work with very little coaxing. Still learning her way around town, getting her home settled and yet to decide which career opportunities to pursue at this stage of her life, Keitha is proving what I have been saying for years. No better way to get to know your community and the wonderful people within it, than to become a Carmel volunteer. Welcome to the club! Jeff Worrell is a local business owner. He recognizes volunteers on “Connecting with Carmel” on cable channel 16. Contact him at jworrell@advantagemedical.com

Daris Reno-Blickman credits her passion and heritage for helping her organize this year’s CarmelFest Has Talent

By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel Daris Reno-Blickman jokes that a week from now she’ll be in a sort of hibernation. The Carmel resident works full time handling public relations for various local organizations and individuals. She is also in the process of starting an online coaching school, but this time of year, she is perhaps most associated with CarmelFest Has Talent, the vocal competition at CarmelFest for which Reno-Blickman is the chairwoman. When the event’s winners are crowned July 5, it will cap six months and countless hours of volunteer work required to put the competition together. She’s looking forward to an extended nap when it’s all over, but despite the heavy workload, Reno-Blickman said her love of the event and even her heritage have kept her going this year. CarmelFest Has Talent is a statewide singing competition in its second year. After countless applications and auditions, the 10 best singers in three age groups were selected, and these 30 semifinalists will be narrowed to three winners over the course of the two-day festival. Organizing this type of event, Reno-Blickman said, is very time consuming and requires more work than most people realize. “People just think you have people sign up and that’s it, but there are 100 other things you have to do,” she said. “I spend weeks driving around from city to city hanging up posters. Then I go there the next week, and if they’re gone I hang up more. That’s something people don’t know I have to do.” She said much of her time – and money – is spent marketing the event in order to truly make it a statewide competition, but the responsibilities don’t end there. Essentially, every rule, every minor detail has to be planned and executed. For example, it may seem like judges at these types of competitions can speak as much or as little as they wish, but Reno-Blickman said that time has to be set. If a judge goes over, though, a plan has to be in place to make up those lost minutes. This year, Reno-Blickman said she has the benefit of a year’s experience, but with this one step forward, she took two back, as her co-chair Gena Hout has been unable to assist with the organization as much as was expected. Hout, who came up with the idea for CarmelFest Has Talent, said she’s been unexpectedly sidelined this year as a result of unspecified personal circumstances. Hout said she’s still involved, but not as much as she’d like to be. “Daris has forged ahead like is so typical of her,” she said. “I have missed not being more involved this year; however, I am looking forward to jumping in with both feet for next year’s event.” Bernie Szuhaj, co-owner of the Simply Sweet Shoppe and Second Story Playhouse, said he’s lent Reno-Blickman a hand on a number of occasions in the past six months and helped with several different initiatives. He said a great deal of time and effort must go into making this event work, but her effort and enthusiasm is never lacking. “Daris doesn’t do anything half way; it’s always 110 percent effort,” he said. “Her reputation precedes itself on putting on a quality, high-energy and entertaining event.” Reno-Blickman said that mindset of putting forth her best effort at all times regardless of circumstance stems from her Na-

tive American heritage. Though she is Cherokee, she said she was always taught that her actions represent every Native American in the world. For that reason, she said she wants to display honor and respect by putting on a great event. “It’s a way for me to educate others about Native Americans and our traditions,” she said. “I think you do that by example … In our minds, we want to do everything to the best of our abilities.” Reno-Blickman said she makes time for CarmelFest Has Talent in order to put together an event that meets her own expectations. The long hours aren’t easy, she said, but the payoff for her six months of effort will come this weekend. “It’s all volunteer work,” she said. “You get paid if people come

enjoy themselves and want to do it again.”

DIRTY WORK Daris Reno-Blickman said one of her favorite things about working on CarmelFest Hast Talent is interacting with the contestants and their families, but that also includes one of her least favorite aspects of the competition. On many nights, Reno-Blickman said she’s up late writing e-mails to inform kids that they didn’t make the cut. “I hate that part,” she said.

Poof! Make design problems disappear! Commentary By Vicky Earley A screen is like a veil: It hides what you want to hide while creating mystery and intrigue. Room screens have been around practically forever. The Chinese began using them as far back as 200 B.C, while the Japanese adopted them in the seventh century. Europeans lagged far behind in this decorating trend, as they did not embrace the screen until 1600s. The original screens were elaborate with intricate paintings and carvings. They functioned as art and status symbols. The screen has evolved into a life-form with a practical purpose: It is one of the most flexible interior design tools available. Screens are an outstanding alternative to altering the structure of your home. Folding screen room dividers are easily removable and storable when not needed, as they are a form of freestanding art and furniture. Screens can function as a room divider or decorative focal point, and they can be moved with every decorating whim. One of my favorite ways to use a gorgeous decorative screen is to tuck it behind a sofa in place of the expected picture behind a sofa. A screen is dimension, texture, color and interest – all in one decorating investment.

using a screen as an unexpected headboard. In a large space, screens can be used to provide a sense of intimacy. It can separate a dining area from a living area in a large, open space. Privacy is the side benefit to a beautiful screen and a space tucked behind a screen is suddenly a cozy, dedicated safe space. Screens are a great way to hide something unsightly and any clutter. You can hide just about anything from anything from bad architecture to stereo equipment. If you don’t have room for an office, you might want to use a screen in your living room or bedroom by placing a desk on the other side of the screen in those rooms. The desk is out of view in the evening when you want to relax, and the bed is out of view during the work day, when you wish you could relax! Screens, whether an ornate antique or fabricated today, can offer an element of style while concealing something unattractive – or even downright ugly! A screen is a fail-proof way to liven up a dreary room by filling dead spaces. When used in an empty corner of a room, a landing, a patio and behind a pair of chairs, a screen can immediately add interest and sophistication. Consider

Just don't and don't just COMMENTARY By Brandie Bohney My husband is a sports fan. He loves sports. With few exceptions, he enjoys just about everything that comes out of the sporting world. For this reason, he listens to a lot of ESPN radio. And ESPN radio is the source of today’s column topic. An ad for an Indianapolis-area business that airs on ESPN radio illustrates an interesting grammatical faux pas. The ad states of the business, “They just don’t say they’re local; they are local.” Hmmm. Do you see the problem? The problem is just don’t. When you use just before don’t, it acts as a sort of intensifier: The museum has many fine paintings; just don’t touch them. If you reverse the order of the words, though, the meaning changes because just then goes on to intensify whatever verb follows it: Don’t just stand there; do something! Do you see the difference? The problem with the ad is that just should follow don’t instead of preceding it. And while I think the difference in meaning is pretty clear, this is one of those mistakes that anyone can make when not paying enough attention or

speaking faster than thinking. Instead of saying that the business actually is local rather than merely making that claim falsely, the ad seems to say that the business is local but doesn’t say so. And that’s not the intention of the ad. Normally, this sort of thing would be no big deal. A one-time slip of the tongue, and probably only a handful of people would even catch it. But it wasn’t a one-time slip of the tongue. It was a recorded and regularly played advertisement. And every time it plays, the error becomes both more and more glaring to the listeners who’ve already caught it as well as apparent to those who haven’t yet recognized it. The point is that even a small and understandable error can grow like a weed in your grammatical garden if you don’t pluck it as soon as possible. It’s important to be weeding – er, editing – any work you put into print or on the air as thoroughly and carefully as possible. Because even ESPN listeners can be discerning grammatical gardeners. Brandie Bohney is a grammar enthusiast and former English teacher. If you have a grammarrelated question, please email her at bbthegrammarguru@gmail.com.

COMMENTARY By Becky Kapsalis Suppose your 12-year-old daughter was a very good soccer player on a team vying for a state championship, and suppose that same daughter also signed up for a (non-soccerrelated) youth camp. Then suppose the two schedules conflicted with one another, creating a major dilemma because both events were equally important to her. How do you suppose she handled it? If you’ve ever had this type of scheduling dilemma with any of your kids, you understand the emotional conflict. First, the young lady decided she really wanted to go to her youth camp. She wanted her mom to talk to her coach. Her mom said “This is something you need to do for yourself.” So the young girl mustered up the courage to tell her coach, explaining she didn’t want to let her team down but she only had this one chance to go to this youth camp. The coach, admirably, told her, “By all means go to the camp.” The next day, the coach approached her and let her know how much he appreciated her

coming directly to him instead of having her mom or dad do the talking for her. A couple of girls on the team were surprised that she would choose camp over the state finals, but she stuck to her guns and left for camp. The team went on to win the championship. She had a great experience at camp. The team (at the coach’s direction) texted the young lady to tell her they won. They included her in the victory. Her mom accepted her trophy for her, and everyone savored the taste of success. What could have been a horrific emotional experience turned into a life lesson – a lesson that will do her well far after camps and soccer victories are a thing of her past. Kudos to everyone – the Mom, the little lady, the coach and her teammates. Conviction with character counts. Hugs! ATI production uses old classics in new contexts By Dave Arland Current in Carmel The latest production from Carmel’s Actors Theatre of Indiana promises a night of familiar music in some not-so-familiar situations when “A Grand Night for Singing” takes the Carmel Community Playhouse at Clay Terrace stage beginning July 7. Broadway songwriters Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II created such iconic shows as “Oklahoma!” “Carousel,” and “The King and I.” Plucking songs from the songwriting duo’s famous musicals, “A Grand Night for Singing” drops them into new situations when the characters meet each other for the first time and romance blossoms. A production of Actors Theatre of Indiana, a local company of performing professionals, the musical revue “A Grand Night for Singing” first opened on Broadway in 1994, winning critical acclaim and earning a Tony nomination for Best Musical. Set on the grounds of a beautiful mansion near the water, the production stars ATI founders Judy Fitzgerald, Cynthia Collins, and Don Farrell along with local stage veteran Jill O’Malia and Bradley Reynolds, a New York theater producer and actor who grew up in Speedway. ductions, said audiences are in for a treat with the rich harmonies and tuneful music that they know from the stage and screen. “This show is all about the different situations of romance,” O’Malia said. “There is also music from a few shows that are not as well known – such as ‘Me and Juliet.’ These will be big crowd pleasers that are fun, new, and fresh.”

The show includes some 30 Rodgers and Hammerstein songs, each performed in a new context. “It’s a fair guess that the songwriting duo never imagined the song ‘Shall We Dance’ as a comedy dance routine, or that they thought about ‘How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?’ as a lover’s lament,” said ATI cofounder Don Farrell, who is also directing and choreographing the show. “But that’s exactly how these songs have been re-imagined in this production.” For New York actor and Broadway producer Bradley Reynolds, taking songs out of their original context and weaving them into another story proves the timeless nature of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s music. “Their work is so completely enduring,” Reynolds said. “In this setting, everything is contemporary and the plot has nothing to do with the original settings – but it works.” The 20 performances of “A Grand Night for Singing” begin July 7 and run through August 1. Shows start at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays throughout July. Sunday shows have a 2 p.m. curtain time at the Carmel Community Playhouse at Clay Terrace. Weekend performances are $32 each. Wednesday and Thursday performances are value priced at $20 each. Go to www.actorstheatreofindiana. org for tickets and details.

This cherry isn't as it was, or was it?

COMMENTARY By Chef Michael Vlasich “Urban legends” can be found in many walks of life and mostly can be proven false. The questions become harder when they span across centuries and extend between a multitude of topics or facts. Recently, I was engaged in a conversation that included questions on many aspects of a particular urban legend: Are they edible or plastic? Are they preserved in formaldehyde? Were they made using red dye that causes cancer? Did they originate in Oregon or were they copied from Europe? Do they contain liquor? Are they harmful to children, causing them to grow extra fingers? These were the major points, and after much digging and sifting, I have the truths about “maraschino cherries,” the once highly sought after cocktail garnish. The original maraschino cherries came from Yugoslavia, centuries ago, produced from a small bitter black cherry called the mascara, which grew wild in Dalmatia. Back then, there was no good way to preserve fruit. Being located on the coast of Croatia, they would pickle them in seawater, and then marinate them in cherry liqueur made from mascara juice, pits and leaves. This was the real first maraschino cherry. This probably makes you wonder, how we got from there to the bright red, rubbery, sweet cherry, we use today to top ice cream sundaes. The original cherries were brought here by the immigrants, and along with everything else, were sold to start a life in the new world. They quickly became in demand in the upscale hotels, as they were used as a garnish in cocktails, showing a sign of wealth and taste. In the 1800s, farmers in Oregon found their state was the perfect climate for growing cherry trees. As the years went on, they began to have an overabundant mass of cherries, and they had to find new ways to use them. With this and the demand for the maraschino, people found ways to make cheaper versions less expensively. In the early 1900s, the University of Oregon developed a technique to soak the cherries in a brine and then in a cherry liqueur, imitating the cherries of Dalmatia. Later, they were changed to a mixture of almond

Maraschino cherries Ingredients: • Brine • 2 qts. Water • 1 tbsp. pickling salt • 5 # pitted cherries • Syrup • 4.5# granulated sugar • 3 cups water • 1 lemon • 1 tbsp. red food color • 1 tbsp. almond extract • 1/2 cup amaretto (optional) Directions: Brine: Bring water and salt to a boil only long enough to dissolve the salt. Cool for 10 minutes, pour over the cherries, mix gently to ensure thoroughly mixed. Cover and let sit overnight for 12 hours. Drain the cherries and discard the brine, rinse in cold water and let drain for 10 minutes. Syrup: Combine sugar, water, juice of one lemon and food coloring. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Remove from heat, let stand 20 minutes, then pour over the cherries. After cool, cover and let sit 24 hours. Drain the cherries, saving the juice. Bring the juice to a boil again, reduce by 25 percent, then add the almond extract and amaretto, and pour over the cherries again. oil and paste, closer imitating the maraschino cherry flavors of today, specifically because of prohibition and the outlaw of all liquor. This is how we got the maraschino cherries we know today. If you have a large batch of cherries this summer to preserve, included is a recipe for maraschino cherries. I have used it before; it is basic, but it’s tasty. Chef Michael R. Norris wins City Championship Steve Norris (pictured) held off a strong field to claim the Inaugural City Golf Championship at Brookshire Golf Club June 19. Norris played solid golf all three rounds en route to a five-shot victory. Rounds of 75, 74 and 74, respectively, led him to the crown of city champion. Doug Ringle finished second with a three-round total of 228. Carole Gilbride claimed the Ladies City Championship in extra holes over Joyce Higgins. Gilbride and Higgins matched scores on all three days until the 19th hole in the final round.

Commentary By Tracy Line I was three years old when I took my first vacation. I recall sitting in the backseat of our car, perched next to a cooler full of sandwiches, my brother poking me from the other side and our beloved beagle Tammy at my feet. The six-hour drive to Michigan took forever. My family was more frugal than most. Our Michigan trip became an annual one, and each year we stayed in a tiny camping cabin by a pond. A short walk from here led us to Clearwater Lake. The cabins were sparse: no bathrooms, air-conditioning or television. There was a shared latrine down a dusty path. The window screens were full of holes; mosquitoes were a constant. I remember sharing a bedroom with my brother, each of us sweating our way through the night on our individual cots. I also remember what fun we had. Here I learned how to row a boat. I spent hours fishing with my brother, refusing to ever bait

The Art of Racing in the Rain

By Garth Stein Enzo, a mixed-breed dog who is sure his sire must have been a terrier because terriers have purpose, narrates the story of his life with Denny, his master. From the moment Denny chooses him from a playful group of puppies on a farm, Enzo knows love, sadness and heartache with his human family. Enzo learns from Denny, an aspiring race car driver, that a person or dog can direct his own life, just as a racing car driver can influence the outcome of his own race. Furthermore, Enzo is not afraid to die because he learns from a National Geographic TV show that after death a dog who is worthy will be reincarnated as a man. In his efforts to be a worthy dog, Enzo accepts and comforts Denny’s new wife Eve, becomes playmate and protector to their baby daughter Zoe, and helps Denny through disappointment and heartache. Despite being a touch melodramatic, this story is for all dog-loving people who have wondered what their dog is thinking. While the story “Marley & Me” by John Grogan tells the story of a family dog from a human point of view, this story is told from the dog’s point of view. At times this sweet story is humorous and lighthearted, as when Enzo ruminates that it is unfair that monkeys have opposable thumbs instead of dogs, who are smarter and worthier. There are also somber moments and Enzo tends to do quite a lot of introspection and philosophizing. Nevertheless, true dog lovers will find themselves nodding in agreement over Enzo’s observations and saying “I know my dog is thinking exactly the same thing!” Reviewed by Nina Kennedy CCPL Readers’ Advisory Librarian

the hook (I still won’t). There was a tiny store where we’d buy ice cream. The cool treats were heaven in that muggy Michigan heat. The lake was great for swimming, and there was a rope swing tied to an old oak tree. Swinging out over the water, jumping into the cool lake on a hot summer day, is there anything better? On our last night, we’d wash our hair in the lake, get dressed and drive over to see my aunt and uncle. We’d all go out to dinner: fried chicken never tasted so good. It may not sound like much of a vacation and it wasn’t. But getting away, spending time with family and doing a whole lot of nothing, this is what mattered. It’s what matters today, too. It was worth every mosquito bite.

COMMENTARY By David Cain At age two, my oldest daughter wouldn’t wear a bike helmet. It was cruel punishment for a father who just wanted to take his daughter for a relaxing bike ride. Her will to resist the helmet was like trying to bring two repelling magnets together. Like trying to move an entrenched mule. Like trying to win an argument with my wife: It was impossible. My veiled threats fell on deaf ears. Helmet on, helmet thrown to the ground in a fit of rage, and repeat. Finally, I resolved that there would be no bike riding at this house. She wouldn’t wear the helmet under any circumstance. Fast forward two more years and we find a house where bike helmets are commonplace. They aren’t reserved for just bike rides; they are part of everyday attire. At four years old, a bike helmet adorned with Tinker Bell is a part of the accepted dress code. It’s the same helmet as before, only sized a little larger to fit a bigger head with more hair. And, at the same age as the resistance started two years earlier, the second little girl willingly accepts the helmet. She plops it on her head and runs to the mirror to see how stylish she looks with that hard plastic thing on her head. What changed in the two years?

Human beings want social validation. They crave acceptance like a nicotine addiction. We all want to fit in with our peers despite what we might say or believe. Everyone would rather fit in and be accepted. Every person might have a different group they are trying to fit in with, but fitting in and being socially validated is important to all of us. Whether you play in the band or the football team, you have a group whose opinion and social validation you desire. My oldest daughter’s change in opinion is a byproduct of what she sees from her friends. They all wear helmets, so she now wears a helmet – it’s a part of fitting in. Her younger sister, at the same age when she threw fits about head safety, wears the helmet willingly because her sister does it. We all want to fit in. People have the independent thinking of a school of fish – a good lesson to remember in your business and family. Make sure your group (or audience) feels like buying from you is socially acceptable – everyone’s doing it.

ment plan that is a prerequisite to receiving grant money from the EPA. The plan also stresses best management practices, including building natural buffer strips that could be funded through the EPA. Measures include placing a filter strip, such as a swath of grass, between a farm field and a stream; or planting annual plants that remain in the ground during the winter to absorb fertilizers.

No zoning regulations

Zoning could play a role, but there is no statewide law on regulating zoning around large bodies of water, which would fall under the authority of local government, according to IDEM. “Most states ban subdivisions around waterways but not in Hoosier land,” said Glenn Pratt, board member of the Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter and former head of the EPA’s water discharge program for Region 5. “We put them back to back, belly to belly, right next to the water source,” he added. “People who live around them have come to understand they like big green lawns but they don’t like big green lakes.” Finding solutions that satisfy everyone will not be easy because of the varied sources of phosphorus contamination. “It comes from so many places and the impact is so great,” Tedesco said. “We do have to manage it, but the question is how.” ✭ Call Star reporter Jason Thomas at (317) 444-6087.

A rare Japanese collectible: the Mazda RX-7 COMMENTARY By Shawn Miller Rarely do I consider Japanese cars collectibles. There have been only a handful of Japanese cars I would consider truly collectible, the 60’s Toyota 2000 GT (only 150 or so were made-they trade at about $500,000), and the 70’s Datsun/ Nissan 240Z, come to mind immediately. By and large, most Japanese cars are what I would call “appliances.” They’re dependable, built to a price, and designed to last only a few years. Additionally, a certain Japanese manufacturer has consistently replicated cars other manufacturers have made, which just rubs me the wrong way. One Japanese car, however, broke new ground and had a very successful run: the Mazda R-7. The RX-7 was produced from 1978 to 2002. The original RX-7 was a sports coupe produced from 1979-1985. The second generation, produced from 1986-1991, featured a complete restyling reminiscent of the Porsche 924/944. The third generation of the RX-7, produced from 1992-2002 was an outright, no-compromise sports car by Japanese standards. The RX-7 made Car and Driver’s Ten Best List five times. In total, 811,634 RX-7s were produced. Parts are readily available and there is a good network of clubs across the country for

support. All three series could be considered future collectibles. These cars are very inexpensive to purchase at this point. Series 1 cars can be had all day long in the $3,000-$5,000 range, and are going nowhere but up. Series 2 and 3 cars run anywhere up to $15,000, but typically trade in the $7,500 range. I would expect values to rise gradually over the next decade with convertible prices outpacing the others. There is no limit to the amount of fun these cars provide, so this is one of your best bets as far as your enjoyment return goes.

Acupuncture an effective treatment for pain COMMENTARY By Dmitry M. Arbuck M.D. Acupuncture is one of the alternative modalities used in treatment of pain. It is usually effective in acute painful conditions, but it is less effective in chronic painful conditions. Knee pain is known as one of the best in terms of response to acupuncture, and headaches are among the worst responders. Acupuncture is based on the notion that every tissue, organ and cell is, in essence, an electric device and therefore may be influenced by changing the electrical flow to its particular area. Acupuncture needles, in essence, present electrodes, which change polarity of the electrical flow and may energize or inhibit certain areas even far remote from the place where the needle is inserted. In addition to electrical phenomena, acupuncture influences neurochemistry as well, changing the level of neurotransmitters in the brain and peripheral tissues, therefore influencing pain propagation and pain origin. Acupuncture is frequently used with herbs and supplements, and acupuncture practitioners frequently compare acupuncture to a spoon to “stir a soup of herbs”. Acupuncture is more of an art than science,

so results vary greatly between different acupuncturists. However remote, there is a possibility of damage with acupuncture and a chance that acupuncture can worsen an illness if it is used incorrectly. Unfortunately, many insurance companies do not pay for acupuncture, which limits an access to a potentially beneficial treatment. Dmitry M. Lose belly fat with CLA storage, CLA has been shown to help glucose pass into muscle cells more effectively, preventing it from being converted into fat, and it helps fat enter the cell membranes of muscle and connective tissue, where the fat is burned for fuel. CLA also interferes with a substance in your body, called lipoprotein lipase, which is used to store fat in your body. Also CLA increases lean muscle tissue, which naturally slims your body. A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat, but muscle mass only takes up one-third the space in our body. And the more lean the muscle, the more calories your body burns thereby speeding fat burning. As a result, you get smaller in all the right places. So if you are having trouble losing body fat, try adding a high quality CLA supplement to your diet – as long as your physician approves.

COMMENTARY By Laura Marenco Could adding a supplement to your healthy weight-loss program help eliminate stubborn belly fat? A 2006 study showed that adding conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, to a healthy diet reduced fat in leg and abdominal areas for women and in the abdomen for men. Participants lost from 1.5 to 3 pounds by simply adding a CLA supplement to what they were already doing. CLA is a fatty acid known for promoting good health, and it was first identified in 1978 by Dr. Michael Pariza ,who studied its effects on cancer prevention at the University of Wisconsin. While he did not find any link to cancer prevention, his research suggested some interesting health benefits. CLA not only helped to reduce body fat, it helped maintain lean muscle tissue. Many other studies followed and have shown that CLA decreases the amount of fat stored after eating, increases how fast fat is broken down in fat cells and rate of fat metabolism, and decreases the total number of fat cells in our bodies. In improving fat metabolism and preventing

Abuse: Warning signs and what to do, Part 2 COMMENTARY By Rachael Noble In my last article, I wrote about domestic abuse. One of the most common questions people ask about this topic is, “Why do women stay with abusers?” First of all, these women are typically slowly brainwashed into thinking their man is the beall, end-all and she cannot live without him. He will infiltrate her entire world, causing her to depend on him 100 percent. The thought of leaving him makes her feel helpless, especially if she has children. Also, many times a cycle of abuse from the past or from her own family will cause her to stay, because this is the only world she knows. The drama and the fighting is actually “comfortable” to her. The abused is unhealthily “addicted” to the abuser pushing her away and treating her badly until she finally gives up and tries to walk away. He then begs her to stay with him, telling her what she wants to hear (he can’t live without her, he has changed, etc.). The unhealthy “rush” of feeling loved because of his pursuit is enough to keep her going until the next time he puts her on an emotional roller coaster again. What to do: If you are in an abusive relationship, safety for

yourself (and your children if you have them) is key. You may be at the point of not having friends anymore because of him, so it’s important to rekindle/cling to relationships with family and friends. It’s time to cease making excuses for him, stop being in denial and reach out for help. Many resources are available online, as well as … • Shelteringwings.org and 317-745-1496 (for single mothers) • Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (1-800-332-7385) If you are friends with someone in this situation, continue to always be her friend, despite her bad decisions. It may take her years to shut this man completely out of her life. Be there for her through the ups and downs, the roller coaster of breakups and getting back together. Don’t ignore reality. Be there to listen, but do tell her you know the truth and know he isn’t treating her the way she deserves. Tell her you accept her but you do not approve of the way he treats her. Your friendship may be the only good thing she can hang on to.

» Natural Balance recall – The ASPCA is advising pet parents to immediately discontinue the use of Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Chicken Dry Dog Food with the "best by" date of June 17, 2011, in 5- and 28-lb. bags. The manufacturer announced a voluntary recall due to potential Salmonella contamination. No illnesses have been reported, and the Sweet Potato & Chicken Dry Dog Food with the aforementioned "best by" date is the only product affected. Pet parents should avoid direct contact and wash their hands thoroughly after handling any potentially contaminated food. -www.usatoday.com » USDA approves first canine vaccine – Recently, the USDA announced a major breakthrough in preventing flu in dogs, especially social canines at higher risk. After nearly one million doses sold to veterinary clinics and shelters throughout the U.S. in the past year, the USDA has granted full license to the first vaccine against canine influenza virus. Known as Nobivac Canine Flu H3N8, the vaccine was given a conditional license on May 27, 2009, and has since been shown to reduce the signs, severity and spread of CIV infection. -www.zootoo.com

What to do when your dog gets overexcited before a walk COMMENTARY By John Mikesell You contemplate taking your dog for a walk with mixed emotions. When you pick up the leash, he becomes the Tasmanian Devil – bodyslamming you, racing around the foyer and bouncing off the walls. Hers are five suggestions for turning this into an enjoyable outing: 1. Exercise first. Spend 15 to 20 minutes tossing a ball for your dog in the backyard or some other sort of physical exercise before going out for a walk. You’ll take the edge off his excitement, reduce his energy level and make leashing up and walking more relaxed and enjoyable for both of you. 2. Teach him to “say please.” Reinforce your dog’s “sit” behavior so thoroughly that “sit” becomes his default behavior – the behavior he chooses to offer when he doesn’t know what else to do. Then wait for him to sit (say “please”) to make all good things happen: sit for you to throw his ball; sit for his dinner bowl; sit to be petted; sit to put his leash on; sit to make the door open. 3. Pick up his leash throughout the day. He gets amped up when you touch his leash, because it always means the two of you are going for a walk. Of course he gets excited! If you pick up his leash numerous times throughout the day, sometimes draping it over your neck and wearing it for awhile, sometimes carrying it from room to room, the leash will no longer be a reliable predictor of walks, and he won’t

have any reason to get excited. Note: This will take a while. Hope springs eternal in the canine heart. 4. Use negative punishment. No, that’s not a bonk on the head. It means setting up the situation so that doing the behavior you don’t want causes a good thing to go a way. If, when you pick the leash, he goes bonkers (the behavior you don’t want), say “Oops” in a cheerful tone of voice, set the leash down, and walk away. When he settles down pick up the the leash again. If he sits, proceed with the walk. 5. Reduce the significance of other “walk cues.” Other things you do as part of your walk preparation routine can also feed his energy – getting out treats, putting on your jacket, grabbing your cell phone and keys/ The more you randomize your ritual, the less these steps contribute to his growing excitement over the pending event, and the calmer he’ll stay as you leash him and walk out the door. John Mikesell, owner of Izzy’s Place, A dog Bakery in Carmel, can be reached at john.mikesell@att.net.

PETS OF THE WEEK Stacia is a 4-year-old female American Staffordshire terrier/ American pit bull terrier mix. Stacia is a very sweet and loving girl who is spayed and house trained. Her previous owner surrendered her because they could no longer afford to care for her. They did say she was good with children, but in the shelter she has been nervous (understandably) so we feel she should go to a home with children age 10 or older. Stacia is good with other dogs, but she needs a feline-free home. Please visit her today, but be ready to get some kisses! Grayson is a 2-year-old male black and white DSH. Grayson arrived at the shelter on Dec. 29. His owner said he was the offspring of another pet and didn’t want him. We soon realized he was having pain in his hip and after an examination by a veterinarian the pain was caused from his hip popping out of joint; likely a birth defect. Grayson had surgery before the shelter had a chance to find a sponsor, so if you would like to help sponsor Grayson, foster him or even adopt him, contact the Animal Programs staff at 317-774-1263 or by e-mail at animalprograms@hamiltonhumane.com.

Should I upgrade to Office 2010? COMMENTARY By Gary Hubbard Microsoft’s Office Suite has become so ubiquitous that many people buying new computers just assume that it’s part of Windows, which it isn’t. Even though you’re using Office 2003 on your old computer and will likely have Windows 7 on your new computer, as long as you have the original disk, you can install and run Office 2003 on your new computer with no problem. If you want to upgrade, the costs may be about the same for either 2007 or 2010 depending upon when and where you buy your computer. The biggest complaint for those that have upgraded from Office 2003 to Office 2007 is the new navigation system known as the “ribbon,” which dramatically changes the way you work with the various programs. The actual menu system that has been in Office products from the beginning changed dramatically when Office 2007 was released. For those willing to work through the learning curve of the new interface, the general response is that it’s more useful. But I have yet to meet anyone who fell in love with the ribbon system from the beginning. Microsoft heard the uproar, so Office 2010

has more of the traditional menu system, intertwined with the new ribbon system so that it’s less traumatic. Other improvements of Office 2010 over 2007 include … • Paste preview: You can now preview text or graphics before you paste them in • Improved picture-editing tools: many more adjustments that you can make to images on-the-fly (including background removal) • Better text effects in Word • Sparklines for Excel: Add mini charts inside of a cell to show trending of the adjacent data. • Easier embedding and editing of video in PowerPoint • Easy Web broadcasting of your PowerPoint

presentations: Others can see your presentation via their Web browser. • Outlook gets social: You won’t have to switch to see your Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. feeds. • Outlook adds conversation view: See your e-mail messages as a conversation (like Gmail) instead of individual messages. • Better search tools throughout • Stronger security settings: Better tools to protect documents from unauthorized access and editing • Office Web apps: A limited online version for document sharing and calibration (to compete with Google Docs) In my opinion, if you’re going to upgrade, spend your money on Office 2010 so you get the benefit of what they learned from Office 2007’s issues. If you are an Office “power user,” you will likely appreciate the new features in Office 2010 more than someone that occasionally taps out a document, never or rarely uses Excel or has no need to create PowerPoint presentations. See you in the funny papers room floor, with the funny pages laid out before me. My first favorite strip was Alley Oop. Something about the adventures of a time-traveling caveman just got me where I lived. He carried a club, rode around on a dinosaur, had a smokin’ hot wife who ran around in a fur bathing suit, and visited the 20th century, where he would don business suits but leave out the shoes. My kinda guy. It didn’t hurt that he was easy to draw. I could impress all my friends with my clever portraits of Alley Oop, which were made more or less by drawing a square and giving it hair and a nose. For a while, I was a huge fan of all the comic strips printed in the Indianapolis Times, based mostly on a passion for “Freckles and his Friends.” More than once I came to the dinner table and declared the Times to be the comics leader among Indianapolis’ three daily papers. And more than once I was sent to the kitchen with dinner by my father, an employee of the Indianapolis News. I acquired a lot of “must-read” strips – “Gasoline Alley,” “Dondi,” “Gordo,” “Moon Mull-

COMMENTARY By Mike Redmond I guess we all saw where Little Orphan Annie is no longer in the newspapers, joining a long list of things that are no longer in the newspapers (including, in the case of the one where I used to work, news). I have to admit it gave me a bit of a twinge – not because I was an Annie fan, because I wasn’t. I’m a continuity fan. Annie and her dog Sandy were in the comics for 86 years, and I’m the kind of goof who hates to see the end of a string like that. And while I never was much for Little Orphan Annie (would it have been that much trouble to give the poor girl some eyes?) I have always been a big fan of comic strips. Even at my advanced years, opening the paper means I have to fight the old kidhood temptation to go first to the comics page, and later turn rather grudgingly to the news. Although in the case of my former paper, it IS kind of fun to see if they accidentally printed something interesting. Some of the earliest reading I can remember took place lying on my stomach on the living

ins,” “Rick O’Shay,” “The Phantom,” “Buz Sawyer,” “Steve Roper,” “Prince Valiant,” “The Little King,” “Henry,” “Miss Peach,” “L’il Abner,” “Peanuts,” “Blondie,” “Major Hoople,” “Andy Capp,” “Fred Bassett,” “Dennis the Menace,” ... it took three newspapers a day just to satisfy my habit. I was a 9-year-old with a cartoon monkey on his back. And then I discovered “Pogo.” The strip starring Walt Kelly’s philosophical possum and his goofball friends instantly shot to number one on my all time favorites list, where it remains to this day, followed closely by strips that came later: “Calvin and Hobbes,” “Bloom County” and “The Boondocks.” So many of them are gone now, and I can live with that. What else can you do? Times change, tastes change, technology changes. It’s the natural order of things. But even so, the passing of Annie from newspapers to the digital world strikes me as a loss, a little piece of us to which we must say “So long.” And we can’t even add, “See you in the funny papers.” Mike Redmond is an author, journalist, humorist and speaker. Spreading the exciting news out of Idaho COMMENTARY By Dick Wolfsie BOISE, Idaho - Police in Idaho think they might have solved a year-long condiment spree. Authorities say a 74-year-old woman was arrested after pouring mayonnaise in a library book drop box. She may be connected to nine other condiment-related crimes. The first thing I did when I read this news release was send the Idaho police a thank-you note for practically writing my column for me. You could watch every “Twilight Zone” episode, read every “Sherlock Holmes” short story ever written and see every Coen Brothers movie and I’m tellin’ you, the words “condiment-related crimes” is not going to pop up in any of them. This story was a gift from the people of Idaho who gave us the raw materials to make the French fry. Idaho’s nickname? The Gem State. Once again, they have delivered. Thank you. And now, let’s move on ... I’m basically an honest person, so I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about circumstances that might have led me to a life of crime. However, I’ve seen enough bad-guy movies to know that when you’re looking for shifty ways

to make a living, the answer does not lie in a select variety of sauces. I did resist an early influence to be a crook. My mother was an unrepentant Sweet and Low thief, so I saw firsthand (and with sleight of hand) how easy it was to score big at White Castle or Steak ’n Shake. Mom seemed like a very nice person to some people, but those close to her knew that her sweet disposition was artificial. Apparently, the woman who defiled the books walked around with a backpack that concealed her two sandwich spreads of choice. The police could not legally stop and search her without a warrant or they would have violated her second condiment rights. It’s a pretty sad day when it’s legal to own an Uzi, but a squeezy bottle of mayonnaise is suspect. The woman accused the police of profiling her, but when you leave a trail of Gulden’s Mustard packets behind you, this is considered probable cause. She was also detained at the airport for having more than two ounces of ketchup in her carryon. The low-life in front of her? Box cutters and a Bowie knife in his raincoat. No problem. Welcome aboard. I do think pouring mayo down a book slot

at a library is a serious offense. But judges should be able to use discretion in sentencing. Hellmann’s on Hemingway is just wrong, but Teriyaki on Dostoevsky does have a certain international flavor to it. This is a bad time for “Law and Order” to go off the air. All their stories are ripped from actual headlines and if we should have, say, a chutney-related murder, I don’t trust the people over at “CSI Las Vegas” to take the case seriously. Other than mayo in the return slot, news sources were reluctant to reveal the perp’s other nine condiment capers – possibly fearing that a wave of food-topping, copy-cat crimes would sprinkle the country. There was one leak: The woman did not use Worcestershire Sauce during the commission of any offense. The folks at Lea & Perrins could use this information. When you have a high sodium product, you really need to brag about its low crime rate. The woman was released, by the way, and put on probation. The judge thought she might be a flight risk, and sure enough, at last report she was on the lam. I hope she has some mint jelly in her purse.

Kitchen remodel including adjacent spaces COMMENTARY By Larry Greene BEFORE THE REMODEL: The homeowner recently moved into this 1990s-built home in the Bridlebourne development off Shelbourne Road in Carmel. The layout of the existing kitchen and adjoining first floor did not meet the owner’s needs. The homeowners actually enjoy cooking and preparing meals at home so they needed better functionality. They also required a secondary kitchen to assist the homeowner with a home-based baking business. The final issue was to remodel and update the adjoining laundry room, hall bathroom and hearth room. DESIGN PROCESS: The design phase started with the design of several overall schemes of the entire first floor to make sure the “flow” from room to room was just right. This process flushed out several new ideas that were appealing to the homeowner. In fact, this design process resulted in the reconfiguration of several walls. One of the most useful improvements was the creation of a large walk-in pantry that almost doubled in size from the previous version. PROJECT SCHEDULE: The design phase was split into two parts. The first part included the creation of several overall floor plan schemes.

Before

Once the overall scheme was established, the homeowner moved on to selection of materials. Particular emphasis was spent on the design of the new island, range hood and secondary kitchen area. The design phase lasted five weeks, while construction was about eight weeks. FINAL DETAILS: A long narrow hallway in the kitchen was cut off and converted into the large walk-in pantry. The twin Wolf professional ranges with a custom stained wood hood and Vent-A-Hood blower is a major highlight of the kitchen. Many of the existing cabinets were salvaged and reused and painted in a creamy white base color. The new stained island cabinetry was topped with dark granite. The nearby fireplace

After

in the hearth room was covered with cultured dry-stack stone and included a new raised hearth complete with a granite top and matching wood stained front. Finally, the existing tile flooring around the island was replaced with matching hardwood site-finished flooring.

Cicadas: Beware of the wasp COMMENTARY By Holly Funk While I am normally touted as an insect advocate, no single thing grosses me out quite like a cicada. Except maybe a cockroach. The sheer size of the cicada is probably the greatest influence of my dislike for the boisterous insect – so noisy, in fact, the male cicada is the loudest insect in the world. They are huge and black and have red eyes – not to mention the icky, brown exoskeletons they leave hanging around everywhere. What little boy hasn’t stuck one of those on a girl’s shirt, sending her shrieking? I know that wasn’t just me. Still, cicadas are an interesting lot. The immature cicada lives for many years in the soil at the base of trees and emerges to climb up the trunk and shed their crunchy, beige shell. The adults, then, camp out in trees and talk back and forth to each other until they find a mate (you know the rest). While that totally gives me the willies, someone else might flip over a bee, or wasp, and that just doesn’t really faze me. Not even one of the biggest wasps of all, the cicada killer wasp, (that’s right!) because it hunts down cicadas and makes baby food of them. Awesome. The cicada killer wasp is one scary looking

www.youarecurrent.com

bug. At almost 2 inches long, it burrows in the ground to nest. Sandy areas are preferable, so garden beds with exposed soil and open areas are where you see them most. The male wasp will dive bomb and buzz you in defense but it is all buzz and no bite, as he has no stinger (typical). The female has the ability to sting but will only do so if trapped in a T-shirt or threatened seriously. She’s busy hunting down cicadas. Once she’s got her prey, she brings it to the nest and lays her eggs in it. When the babies hatch they devour the cicada for their first meal. Now, that’s a plan. The cicada killer, as with other bees and wasps, is deemed beneficial as they help to keep balance in the insect world, so, they rarely require control measures. I think it is so cool the way nature takes care of itself – and us. I don’t want to be overrun by cicada swarms. And while it can be quite alarming to cross paths with one of these wasps, especially if you happen to catch one carrying the cicada, it is actually just trying to care for its family. And I think we can all relate to that. Holly Funk is an Indiana accredited horticulturist and advanced master gardener residing in Noblesville.
