OUR VIEWS
It is our position that charter schools may be the answer to school reform. Recently, Newsweek magazine printed its rankings of America’s Best High Schools. Fifteen hundred schools were ranked on “how hard schools staffs worked to challenge students with advanced- placement college-level courses and tests.” Two schools from Indiana ranked in the top fifty. Both were charter schools – the Signature School in Evansville (#7) and Herron School (#26). Zionsville and Carmel High Schools ranked #574 and #696 respectively. As Americans, we are blessed that our country values and provides a free education for its citizens. How do we deliver that education? Public school education is held prisoner by politicians and unions. Charter schools provide a bright shining light out of darkness. Charter schools allow more innovation, freedom from restriction, individualized instruction, self paced learning, focus on the arts and sciences, emphasis on expressive styles of learning – in a nutshell, a ripe environment for learning. More importantly, charter schools level the playing field between the have and the have nots.
Import/export
It is our position that our federal government should focus on root causes and not at individual states working to apply existing statutes in an attempt to address the chronic problem of illegal and undocumented aliens. Accusation of racism and calls for boycott follow any efforts to discuss or manage the growing problem. Yet few can disregard the human rights violations that follow the trail of under-the-table immigration “enterprises” around the world promising the Golden Ticket to the bounty of the United States. Isn’t there something that our burgeoning federal apparatus can do to ameliorate the issue? Can’t we find ways to significantly reduce the incentives for existing Americans to avoid work – at least in the traditional sense? Doesn’t much of the powerful vacuum in the U.S. labor pool derive its power from the fact that there are so many of us unwilling to fill jobs that require intense physical labor? And as long as the jobs are unfilled, won’t there continue to be a significant demand for undocumented aliens without regard to polite programs to stem the tide? Welfare, disability and extended unemployment must be part of the immigration discussion.

Our lives are filled with 'stuff'
From the backshop CarmelFest volunteers: Take a bow! As we went to press with this week’s astonisher, we were discussing the value of volunteering in one’s own community. Jeff Worrell writes a column for us on that very subject each week (even when he’s on vacation, bless the lad). Jeff and Sue Westermeier are part of CarmelFest chairman Gary Frey’s executive committee. The two-day event pays them nothing. Actually, the final tally for nearly a year’s worth of planning and labor amounts to less than zilch. Well, they are paid, after a fashion, in satisfaction for having contributed in a major way to pull off another miracle. Whether it’s funding the fireworks display or making sure every minute detail is covered, Jeff and Sue are there. We volunteer, too, but to nowhere near the level they have attained. They do it because they care about this community. This isn’t about ego. And we do what we do for CarmelFest year in and year out for the same reason. As long as it runs, the event will have our unbridled support. So, to Jeff and Sue (and all their many volunteers, of which there are never enough, by the way) we say, take a well-deserved bow. ••• The Carmel Rotary Freedom Ball a week-
Brian Kelly & Steve Greenberg end ago was a lively, if under-attended, affair. There was a lot of energy in the room at the Ritz Charles, and a bunch of effort was expended to keep this year’s version low-cost – for staging and admission. Attire was casual rather than black-tie and there were touches of whimsy rather than glitz. We were fine with that. Still, attendance lagged. For those who stayed home, you missed a great evening and a chance to help the Carmel Rotary Club. In the immediate aftermath, there were rumblings that the event may not return. We hope that’s not true.

COMMENTARY By Terry Anker So many of our lives overstuffed with stuff. Buying stuff. Selling stuff. Eating stuff. Not eating stuff. We have stuff to store our stuff. When our homes are full of stuff, we rent more places to store our stuff so, well, we can get more stuff. We are told by pundits and government officials the recession is causing us to buy too little new stuff – which is hurting the folks who make the stuff. And yet somehow, we are told by the same pundits and government officials that we bought too much stuff to begin with, ultimately causing the onset of the recession. We are told by environmentalist that we need to keep our stuff longer (or perhaps get rid of our stuff and get new better stuff) to be more friendly to Mother Earth. It is all beginning to make me feel stufficated. We live in a country of great abundance – perhaps the wash of all the stuff is a symptom of our success. Yet a recent wave of documentary/
reality television is dedicated to the addiction of stuff. These programs regale viewers with stories of the millions of Americans drowning both financially and emotionally under the weight of years of accumulated and calcified stuff. Lives are destroyed. Homes are destroyed. And families fail. Not because of hunger or want but because of excess. As a people, we seem unable to outrun the tsunami of stuff that follows our every move. Every once in a while, isn’t there great joy in the reduction of stuff? Isn’t a trip to Goodwill (or even to the dumpster) kind of refreshing? And yet, we still hang on to our stuff for a rainy day. Ultimately, life has a way of making our priorities clear; but in the mean time, I’ve got to find someplace to put my stuff. Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. BP is a public company on the New York Stock Exchange."
Commentary By Danielle Wilson Well, I just returned from a week-long vacation on the South Carolina coast. Here are some things I learned, or was reminded of, while there: • Holy hello, the south is HOT. The average daily temperature was 95 degrees, but with the humidity, it felt like 105. On the beach, it wasn’t too bad, but roadside, with no breeze whatsoever, the heat was suffocating. No wonder Southerners talk so slowly; speaking at a normal rate would cause one to combust. And how anyone ever fought a war down there is beyond me. Sunbathing with a cocktail was almost more activity than I could tolerate. • Road trips should only be completed at night. I knew this from our recent 18-hour jaunt to Florida over Spring Break, but didn’t heed my own advice. On the return journey, my four kids and I sat for an hour outside of Asheville, N.C., and another hour somewhere in the Smoky Mountains, all because construction and lane closures turned I-40 into a parking lot. That would so not have happened at 3 a.m. • Too much chlorine does actually turn your hair green. My 6-year old can prove it. • Everything tastes better with lard. I had lunch in Savannah, Ga., at a restaurant where all the menu items were hosed down in fat. Read the following with a lazy southern drawl: butter-bacon shrimp, collard greens, fried green tomatoes, grits and creaminfused honeydew melon soup. Mmmm. • Single parenting is not really my thing. I CAN take my kids for a week to the beach by myself (and prevent any and all sun burning, thank you very much!), but I don’t WANT to. The first few days were OK, but by the end, I couldn’t do much parenting at all. Example: My “No computer/TV” stance on Friday only lasted until 3 p.m. Mommy out!
• World Cup soccer isn’t that entertaining, but the players are hot enough to make it worth my while. Case in point: England vs. Algeria. I watched 90 stinkin’ minutes of that scoreless match just because the camera kept panning over to Beckham on the sidelines. Oh. My. Lord. Can someone please crank up the A/C? • If you can wait until the last minute, you can get phenomenal deals on vacation homes. We’d been scheduled to go to Alabama, but changed our plans a week before because of the oil spill in the Gulf. Consequently, we were able to book a beachfront house with a private pool for half of what it normally rents for. • Of course, we could have ended up with nada and had to cancel the entire shindig. Tough call, but if you’re a gamblin’ man, you should definitely consider it. • A splinter can ruin your entire day. Again, ask my 6-year old. My cell phone is my woobie. I hadn’t really realized this until I was basically cell-less last week, thanks to dodgy service. So I couldn’t talk to my husband, our Realtor (still house hunting, BTW), or even my twin who’s flight had been delayed. It was HORRIBLE, and even worse, was the realization of how dependent I’ve become on that stupid little phone. Curse you, Verizon! • Road trips aren’t what they used to be. My sister commented that despite the long hours in the car, she and her sons hardly interacted because of their Nintendo DSs and DVD player. Of course, when we were kids, we wore no seat belts and chainsmoked candy cigarettes. Go figure. I hope you discover something new this summer too! Peace out.
Local soccer team builds skills and sets good examples By Danielle Turnbull Current in Carmel The FIFA men’s World Cup is currently peaking interests in soccer around the globe, but a women’s team in Carmel is made up of players working in hopes of one day playing on that stage. Carmel United S.C. has 25 women rostered ranging from college students to 30-year-old mothers and is one of two Indiana teams that are part of the Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPSL). With the second team WPSL team being in Fort Wayne, Carmel United S.C. represents not only this community but the entire Indianapolis area as well. In addition to providing community entertainment and positive role models for girls, the league gives players an opportunity to develop their skills in hopes of moving on to professional and internationallevel play. This is the second year this team has existed, so it is in its infant stages of development. The team, however, is part of a Carmel community staple: the organization known as the Carmel United Soccer Club. This team acts as the highest level of play in this soccer program for all different ages of play for both boys and girls. “This is basically the top of the pyramid of the Carmel Untied soccer program,” coach Russell Gee said. This is Gee’s first year coaching the

team, but has been the director of coaching for the Carmel United organization for 13 years. Although a young team, Carmel United S.C. has become a critical part of the Carmel community and will continue to be so in coming years. Gee said that it works to generate more interest in women’s soccer in the state of Indiana. “I think it’s good for young kids, girls especially, to come out and watch a higher level of soccer,” Gee said. Forward and captain Rana Hoffbauer feels that the team gives Carmel recognition, and might even start drawing more people to the area. Midfielder and captain Kara Bryan said that she is impressed when she plays in games and sees girls with their families watching from the stands, particularly on Friday nights. “There’s no other club that has a team like
this,” Bryan said. Not only does Hoffbauer like that she can play good soccer on this competitive team, but she likes that she’s doing something for the community. “(Soccer) ties you together,” Hoffbauer said. “This is what keeps me connected to the community.” In line with this, the main focus of the team is to provide an outlet for young players in Carmel. Gee and all the players on the team want young girls to know that college doesn’t have to be it. These girls can still go on to play soccer at a competitive level beyond that point. Gee hopes that the team will improve on its current record of one win, four loses and one tie. The team has four more games left in the season, with the next at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Murray Stadium at Carmel High School.

Artists building for artists
Project Manager Mike Anderson By Elizabeth Noel Current in Carmel When Shiel Sexton asked Mike Anderson to be the senior project manager for The Palladium at the Center for Performing Arts in Carmel, he knew he was getting into something special. “This is no ordinary building. It is a monument, a landmark for central Indiana,” he said, mentioning the limestone, plaster and detail that set this unique project apart. Anderson stumbled down the road of construction by luck and chance 37 years ago. After working for the state highway department for a year after high school, he felt connected to construction. “I’ve been doing this since ‘73 and I haven’t regretted one day of it.” Now Anderson, who has helped construct nuclear power plants in the past, says he is working on perhaps the most challenging – and rewarding – project of his career. In doing this, he said he’s working alongside some of the most talented individuals in the state. Shiel Sexton has at least 200 local workers constructing The Palladium daily. According to Anderson, the fact that these workers are local makes The Palladium even more special. “There is a sense of pride about these workers
Hazel Dell Parkway closed for 45 days Current in Carmel The city of Carmel closed a section Hazel Dell Parkway June 28 to begin work on a project that includes the construction of a new roundabout at Cherry Creek Boulevard and Hazel Dell Parkway. The project will also include the widening of Hazel Dell Parkway to four lanes between Ivy Hill Drive (just and Cherry Creek Boulevard. The closing on Hazel Dell Parkway will is scheduled to last for approximately 45 days. Through traffic will be detoured to 131st Street to the south and 146th Street to the
north. Gray Road will be used for detouring northbound & southbound traffic. Work is also scheduled to last now through mid-September as safety enhancements are made to the existing roundabouts on Hazel Dell Parkway at 126th Street and 131st Street. Curb ramps will be installed for street crossings from 116th Street to 146th Street and asphalt will be resurfaced along the same section of the road. The city says drivers can anticipate lane restrictions while the enhancements and resurfacing are taking place.

Mike Anderson (right) gives Artistic Director Michael Feinstein (middle) and his partner Terrence Flannery a tour of the Palladium
that will trickle into the entire community,” he said. “Usually workers will drive by a project years later and point it out to people and say, ‘We did that.’ But this project will be more than a drive by. I think the workers will pull in, stop, and go inside to show off what they have done.” The Palladium is scheduled to be this fall, and Anderson described the final construction stages of the project as bittersweet. “You can sense and feel how special it is when you’re here, and you want to finish it to see it come to life,” he said. “But it will be hard to leave it when it’s done.”

You will need the background of this video to fully understand why, by unanimous decision, Ila Badger is the Rotary Outstanding Service Award Recipient for 2010. The ROSA is granted each year by the Carmel Rotary Club to a non-Rotarian. For the last 23 years, the club has presented the ROSA to individuals exhibiting dedication to the welfare of Carmel and Clay Township through community service. This year’s recipient, Ila Badger, was recognized not just for her community service, but also for her grace, class, generosity, courage, wisdom, dignity and modesty. She has a resume of community service reaching both locally and nationally that is rich, full and diverse. Having undergone a liver transplant nine years ago, she now works tirelessly on behalf of the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization and the American Liver Foundation. She has served Carmel for years on the Plan Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals and various other community service groups. Generations of children will look back fondly on the gift of Mark Badger Soccer Complex, where memories of mentor coaches, unexpected victo-
ries and last-minute losses will never be forgotten. Mark Badger Field is lovingly dedicated to the memory of Jack and Ila’s son tragically lost to a brain tumor at the age of 10. But rather than just point out her long list of doings, I am inspired by Ila the person. During her acceptance speech at the CarmelFest Freedom Ball, Ila spoke of her love for Carmel and the people who ive here. As she spoke, you could feel the kindness and warmth radiate from her words as she explained why she is grateful for her life. She exudes an inner peace and strength that comes out in the form of a happy, compassionate and loving person whom you cannot help but be drawn to. The Ila Badger story could easily end up being only about tragedy, loss and sadness. Losing two sons to illness and fighting a debilitating disease would be too much for the average person. But above-average Ila knows all too well what the gift of life really means. Wasting not one second, she breathes with a perspective of gratitude, fully believing only good things will happen. It is we who should be grateful for life. Especially the life of Ila Badger. Jeff Worrell is a local business owner. He recognizes volunteers on “Connecting with Carmel” on cable channel 16. It wasn't Blockbuster 'bad' COMMENTARY By Danny O’Malia Recently, I hosted a local radio talk show, Abdul in the Morning (1430-AM). The show presents guests and allows listeners to call in. One of my guests represented one of my Customer Service Training clients, Carmel’s own Ritz Charles. The guest was vice president Bill Nicholls. A caller who identified herself as Mary called to complain about her neighborhood Blockbuster store. She had rented the series “Roots” and had opted to take one DVD at a time home, return when done and pick up the next. While viewing the second video, she noticed a whole lot had been skipped. She took the second video back, explained the dilemma, and was told that she failed to flip the first video over and play the second side. She asked if she could have the first video back and was told, not without an extra charge, since it “wasn’t our bad.” She tried to explain that there had been no instructions, verbally or on the jacket of the video. No dice. I told her to talk to the store manager. She told me that’s who she WAS talking to! I suggested she find a new rental place.
When I arrived home, my wife told me the caller had actually been my sister-in-law, Mary Anne, which explained why the voice had sounded so familiar. I called Mary Anne to be certain I had the story right. She confirmed the story and added the following zinger. My 10-year-old nephew, Jonathan, had been with her and while she was having the discussion with the store manager, Jonathan approached with two videos and pointed to a display with a sign touting “Buy One, Get One Free.” She inquired about purchasing the two for one, but the manager told her the deal had expired yesterday. She didn’t even bother to argue that, surely, having the sign up wasn’t her “bad.” This type of uncaring, unresponsive service is reaching critical mass in our society. Sadly this Blockbuster story isn’t that unusual. I hope Mary Anne can find a better place to rent videos. But I don’t think she should hold her breath. Danny O'Malia is an occasional Current columnist. You may e-mail him at danielomalia@ gmail.com.
She asked if she could have the first video back and was told 'not without an extra charge, since it wasn’t our bad.'

Do you title or entitle The six ‘As’ of apology COMMENTARY By Brandie Bohney One of my editors suggested I write a column about the difference between the verbs title and entitle. To be honest, I had never even considered such a column, but it turns out, after a bit of research, it’s actually quite a lively little debate. Two groups revolve around the debate: the Either-Or Group and the They-Don’t-Mean-TheSame-Thing Group. My editor falls into the latter category, and I lean that way, too. Let me explain. The Either-Or Group believe you can use either title or entitle as a verb to mean to give a name or title to, as in, “He titled the song, ‘Grouchy Pants Make Me Dance.’” This camp would tell you that you could replace title with entitle, and all would be well with the world. They aren’t without reason, either: Some dictionaries list the above definition or something pretty similar as one of the possible verb usages for both words. Of course, it wouldn’t be a debate without the other group: the TheyDon’t-Mean-The-Same-Thing Group. This group feels that the verb entitle should really only be used to mean to have a right or claim to something or to bestow a title (as in sir) on someone. These folks also have a legitimate reason for their position: Scads of grammar books and other sources for grammatical guidelines insist that entitle should only be used for describing a right or claim to something. And
quite a few dictionaries back them up. So what’s a grammar guru to do? Here’s the deal, folks: This is almost certainly one of those scenarios wherein the acceptable definition is changing because of rampant misuse. The fact that some dictionaries list giving a name or title to as one of the definitions of entitle indicates that the regular misuse of entitle has not only caught on, but become mainstream enough to catch some dictionary editors’ eyes. I’ve discussed this before; it happens. Sometimes we just have to roll with the punches. Sort of. I’m still in the camp that feels that use of the questionable definition of entitle is wrong, even if some dictionaries sanction such use. So if you want my opinion, it is this: Use title when you mean to give a title to or called (The song is titled, “I Only Dance with Ants in My Pants.”). Use entitle to mean to have or bestow a right or claim to something. Someday, the two words might be interchangeable for the former definition, but that day has not yet fully arrived. Until then, join the They-Don’t-Mean-theSame-Thing Group. We’re a lovely group, and we welcome you with open arms.
COMMENTARY By Becky Kapsalis The message, “It’s better to give than to receive” could easily apply to apologies, although one might find it harder to give apologies than to receive them. Parents and kids alike who give apologies cause me to believe they have done something wrong to hurt another person, which, in my view, probably shouldn’t have happened in the first place. But when saying, “I’m sorry,” is necessary, it must be followed up with all of the following for it to be received properly. ADMIT: Admit what you did, without telling lies first, and without having to be asked. ACCOUNT: Explain what you were trying to do, or what you were thinking, even if you were just being careless and not thinking about it. ACKNOWLEDGE: Show you are aware of the pain or hurt that you have caused the other person. Tell them you wish that you had not caused these hurts, and that you are feeling bad yourself because of the hurt that you caused. AFFIRM: Indicate that you still want the

person to like you, and to forgive you. Ask the person to forgive you, and show that you want to improve your relationship with that person. AMEND: Make amends by doing something to make up for the pain you have caused. Do a favor, bring a gift, do chores for the person, or invite the person to do something fun with you. Explain that you want to repay the person for the hurt you caused. ADJUST: Think about what you can do differently next time, so that you won’t repeat the mistake. Change something to prevent it from happening again. Example: “I’m sorry I did that, it must have really hurt you. I still want to be an important person in your life. Let me make it up to you. I would like to do this favor for you to show you I am really sorry.” Hugs! Becky Kapsalis. aka YiaYia (pronounced Ya-Ya.) is a certified parenting advocate and child behavior coach. CRT brings comic opera to stage for U.S. Premiere By Matt Werner Current in Carmel Carmel Repertory Theatre will be presenting the American premier of Esgee’s production of William S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance,” a comic opera in two acts, as part of xCRT’s Season of Premiéres. The story follows a young apprentice pirate, Frederick (played by Andy Morales), and his trials and tribulations of being released from apprenticeship to a band of pirates. Frederick’s nursemaid Ruth, played by Jo Trakimas, is hard of hearing and accidentally sends him to a pirate apprenticeship when he was supposed to become a pilot apprentice. After leaving his apprenticeship and beginning a new life, he becomes infatuated with women since he had never seen any. However, women are not interested in him once they find out about his pirate past. Finally, he meets Mabel, played by Amanda Moon, who is the daughter of a Major General, and the two fall in love. A few modifications have been made with the play such as music and orchestration to give it a more modern feel. Some of the music has been set to a more upbeat, jazzy tune and some have a pop feel to them. Many of the songs in the show are considered some of the most well known works written by Gilbert and Sullivan.

“It first premiered in 1870s. This version is based on one done in New York starring Kevin Kline and Linda Ronstadt,” Director Larry Creviston said. “Some of the music was taken out basically for Linda Ronstadt and the Gilbert and Sullivan purists didn’t like that. “All the original music is back in, and a few comedic touches were added for more contemporary audience. It is a very funny version of the
original Gilbert and Sullivan classic.” Performances are July 16 to 18 and July 23 to 25 as well as July 30 to August 1. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m., and Sunday Matinees are at 2:30 p.m. Performances will be at Clay Middle School. Adult tickets are $15, and senior, student, and child tickets are $12. Prosperity, fertility and children to work the land COMMENTARY By Chef Michael Vlasich What food is responsible for feeding more people than any other in the world? This same food is responsible for the employment of more people than any other food. Fifty percent of the entire amount of this food is consumed within eight miles of its place of origin. It originated more than 5,000 years ago and is believed to be one of the first crops ever cultivated. It is grown on all continents of the world except Antarctica. Enough teasers, I am talking about rice. Rice belongs to the grass family. The plant needs both warmth and moisture to grow and survive. It is consumed by nearly one half of the entire population of the world, and it is one of the few foods that are entirely non-allergenic and gluten-free. Originating in China and India, rice passed through Greece, and then to other Mediterranean empires such as Rome and Egypt, finally moving on to Africa, Europe and then the Americas. The first cultivation of rice in this country happened by accident. After a storm damaged a ship docked in Charleston Harbor, S.C., the captain handed over a bag of rice to a local plantation owner in trade for room, board and a night of rum-soaked celebrations. By the mid 1720s, Charleston was exporting more than 4,000 tons of rice a year. Rice was an easy commodity to ship and trade because of its size and versatility. It was able to be grown in the desert conditions of the Arabian Peninsula, wetlands of the Orient, and flooded deltas of the Americas. Although it is small and manageable, most people don’t realize rice incredibly prolific. One seed of rice yields more than 3,000 edible grains. Generally, a good place to grow rice will have high rainfall and low labor costs, as these seem to be favorable ingredients for success. It is estimated, that it takes 3,000 to 4,000 tons of water to produce one ton of rice, which is why flooding the fields is the customary way to cultivate this plant. Looking at the major areas of growth in the United States – Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Missouri – it makes sense, as these environments will accommodate the recipe for success.

The most frequently asked question about rice I get is, “Do birds really explode after eating rice thrown after weddings?” I can tell you this is most certainly an urban legend. One way to prove it is simply this: Do you see a plethora of bird carcasses lying all over the ground in states that farm rice? Birds eat rice in the wild all the time. If this were true, there would be no birds anywhere in the Pacific Rim. Why do we throw rice at weddings anyway? This dates back to the Assyrian, Roman, and Egyptian days. It simply means good luck. The use of rice or wheat dates back to when the use of food meant prosperity and fertility. Throwing these items was meant to bring these blessings to the newlyweds and ensure they would have many children to work the land. Chef Michael R. BUTTERFLIED GRILLED CHICKEN WITH A CHILE-LIME RUB
GRILLED TOMATO AND BASIL PIZZAS
Makes 6 servings Ingredients • 3 tbsp. chile powder, preferably New Mexico chile, or Hungarian paprika • 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tsp. freshly grated lime zest • 3 tbsp. lime juice • 1 tbsp. minced garlic • 1 tsp. ground coriander • 1 tsp. ground cumin • 1 tsp. dried oregano, preferably Mexican • 1 1/2 tsp. kosher salt • 1 tsp. freshly ground pepper • 1 pinch ground cinnamon • 1 whole 3 1/2- to 4-pound chicken Directions 1. Combine chile powder (or paprika) and oil in a small bowl with lime zest and juice, garlic, coriander, cumin, oregano, salt, pepper and cinnamon to form a wet paste. 2. Using kitchen shears, cut the chicken down one side of the backbone, through the ribs. Make an identical cut on the opposite side to remove the backbone
completely; discard (or reserve it for stock). Place the chicken cut-side down and flatten with the heel of your hand. Generously smear the spice rub under and over the skin and on the interior of the bird. Place in a nonreactive baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or up to 24 hours. 3. Preheat half the grill to medium-high (or build a medium-high heat fire on one side of a charcoal grill); leave the other half unheated. Have a squirt bottle of water ready by the grill. 4. Leave all the spice rub on the chicken. Place the chicken skin-side down over the heat and grill until the skin begins to color and char marks form, about 5 minutes. (Extinguish any flare-ups with the squirt bottle.) Flip over and grill 5 minutes more. Move the chicken to the unheated side. Close the lid and cook, making sure the chicken is flat against the grate, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of a thigh without touching bone registers 165 degrees F, 30 to 40 minutes. Transfer to a platter and let rest for 5 to 10 minutes before carving. -www.recipezaar.com

Mosaic artist moves brings work to Carmel By Elizabeth Noel Current in Carmel After years of drawing in black and white, artist Michele Soncini realized that she wanted to get over her fear of color. While attending a workshop at the Perkins Center for the Arts in New Jersey, she gained a passion for the bright, oriental mosaics that now dot the walls of the Blue Egg Art Gallery. “It all comes from my inability to sit still,” said Soncini, motioning to her mosaics at the gallery located in the Carmel Arts and Design District. “Plus I was too cheap to pay for cable, so I cut glass instead.” Soncini, who moved to Indiana in September, has been at the Blue Egg since the beginning of June and is excited about her new space. “When I first got here, I went door-to-door looking for people who were interested in my artwork,” she said. “The Blue Egg was immediately receptive.” Blue Egg owner Stephanie Marshall said she did not think twice before creating a spot for Soncini in the gallery. “I’ve seen mosaics before, but none like this,” Marshall said. “The way she captures the human body is like nothing I’ve ever seen.” Soncini describes herself as a figurative artist and emphasizes the human body in her work. “The human body is a vehicle you use to get

Young Kate Howard begins her first day at the Barleybridge Veterinary Hospital in Yorkshire as a shy and inexperienced receptionist. The busy practice, comprised of vets, nurses and receptionists, cares for pets and farm animals. As Kate gains confidence in herself, she becomes aware that her boyfriend Adam wishes to place limitations on her. She also finds herself attracted to Scott, the Australian vet who is known to break women’s hearts. Deciding to follow her original plans to become a vet, Kate must find the courage to overcome the obstacles set in front of her. A comforting novel of animals and friendly people, “A Country Affair” carries the reader to a world familiar to fans of both Jan Karon and James Herriot. Shaw handles the contemporary problems experienced by the characters with gentleness and sensitivity. This upbeat, restful novel is the first in the Barleybridge series, featuring Kate Howard. Titles in the series since include “Country Wives” and “Country Lovers.” Reviewed by Deanna Street CCPL Readers’ Advisory Librarian Visit the Carmel Clay Public Library’s Web site at www.carmel.lib.in.us for more book reviews.

The mind is a broken mirror COMMENTARY By David Cain One thing I’ve noticed about aging is that your mind let’s you believe you aren’t growing older. It’s the physical condition of your body that does most of the nagging. Mentally, I’m almost surprised sometimes by that guy staring back at me in the mirror. Where did his hair go? Why does he look like he’s been staring directly at the sun and squinting for 40 years? Despite this older chaps prodding, in my own head I still feel like I’m 25 – for now anyway. I have the same mentality and can actually feel and believe I’m younger than I am. The mirror foils my plan and reminds me I’m nearly 20 years older than I think I am. Even so, sometimes I believe the mirror is broken. It’s common for people to have a perception of themselves – their appearance, their business, their personality or their success – that isn’t necessarily reality. We always think the best of what we do and generally think the best of ourselves. I never blame myself; instead I provide a comfy excuse that justifies everything I do that could be considered wrong. Sound familiar? Everyone at some point has had an inflated opinion about themselves, their ideas and their efforts and draws conclusions that are self-promoting. However, reality often paints a different picture of this perception. There’s a lesson in all this self-absorption; it’s

for growth. Mooney said KeyCorp chose the Indianapolis market because of the area’s economic potential and KeyBank’s small market share. Hetschel said KeyBank is currently fifth in this market, according to FDIC deposits. New branches are in the works, but Hentschel said Key is relying on its commitment to service and community involvement to attract new customers. A 2009 article in BusinessWeek named its 25 companies with the best customer service. Key was the only bank on the list. “It’s not a fluke,” Hentschel said. “That’s how we hire and train people.” But Hentschel said the company’s service extends outside its branches. On May 25, KeyBank closed branches around the nation so employees could voluntarily take part in various community service efforts. It was Key’s 20th annual day of service. Mooney said she’s received comments from local residents indicating the company’s substantial investment in the area and efforts to become more involved in the community aren’t going unnoticed. “People notice that KeyBank is growing and investing in their community during a recession,” she said. “We’re happy to be here.”

By Kevin Kane Current in Carmel Despite a sluggish economy, KeyBank is investing heavily in the Indianapolis area in hopes of spurring rapid growth. Cleveland-based KeyCorp has KeyBank branches scattered all over the country, but executives with the company say the bank doesn’t have a great enough presence in the Indianapolis area. That’s about to change. “We have picked four different markets where we feel like we can substantially grow,” said KeyCorp Vice Chair Beth Mooney. “Indianapolis and Central Indiana is one of our four top priorities.” Mooney said Key is currently making major moves in two of those four areas: Portland, Oregon and Indianapolis. She added that KeyBank opened 40 new branches nationwide in the last year. Another 40 are expected to open in the next 12 months, including up to six in this area. Though specific locations have not yet been determined, Central Indiana President Gary Hentschel said one of these five or six will definitely be in Carmel. A branch is expected to open next March in Nora, and the company will continue to eye Hamilton County and northern Indianapolis as it continues its push

Get to know (and understand) your sugars COMMENTARY By Laura Marenco OK, we all know too much refined white sugar in our diets is not a good thing. We get fat, sluggish (eventually) and put ourselves at risk of developing Type II Diabetes. Understanding sugars, though, can help us stave off the potential ills. There are two reigning varieties of sugar that should command our attention: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic sugars are those that occur naturally in fruits and vegetables; they are so named because they reside within the cell structures themselves. We do not need to cut back on these sugars if we want to lose weight or get healthy. Extrinsic sugars are those not contained within the cell structures of natural foods. Instead they themselves fall into two main groups. These are: • Milk extrinsic sugars: These occur naturally in milk products. • Non-milk extrinsic sugars (NME): These are added to foods. We need to avoid the NME sugars. Their main purpose is to sweeten food products, but NMEs also increase bulk and/or preserve the food products. NME sugars contain no useful nutrients for the body, so are metabolized and stored as fat. When our diet is high in NME sugars, the
Every Tuesday body doesn’t use its stored fat, and it just keeps piling on. Further, our blood-sugar levels rise and fall sharply (the “buzz” and the “crash”) when we ingest too great a volume of NME sugars. This puts a terrible strain on the pancreas, which constantly is forced to create and release insulin to moderate blood-sugar levels. Eventually, the strain becomes too much, and the blood-sugar levels no longer can be effectively regulated. This leads to the onset of Type II Diabetes and its associated health problems, some of which can become debilitating. If we want to use up the stored fat in our bodies, ingesting naturally occurring sugars is the best way to achieve that. Be a label reader, and get healthier and wiser.

Your training is a mess you decided to do a few sets of heavy squats or deadlifts instead of those wimpy bicep curls? Reason No. 3: Appearance. Overuse of a muscle doesn’t just lead to imbalances causing pain like we talked about earlier, but also leads to pain in the eyes of those looking at you. You want a big chest, so you keep training your chest? Well your “big” chest is going to get stiff or short. This tension closes off your chest muscles so that nobody can see them anyways! You will look and feel much better if you keep your chest up and shoulders back. Plus, the “healthy” look is much more appealing to the opposite sex. Remember to keep your training balanced for your health, your progress and your appearance. You really want to fix your training? Set out a monthly plan and train movements, not muscles.

COMMENTARY By Lance Goyke You know how I know your training is messed up? Because everybody’s is. That is assuming, of course, you’re going into the gym at all. I’m going to give you the many reasons why you shouldn’t be doing the bench and biceps exercises everyone seems to be doing at your gym day in and day out. Reason No. 1: Health. Imbalances in the length-tension relationships between muscles around a joint can wreak havoc on that joint and cause some serious chronic pain. This is why your grandma talks so much about proper posture. If you keep benching and benching without doing any rows, your shoulders will hurt in no time. Injuries like that tend to be a very convincing reason to make people stop weight training and start getting fat and out of shape. Reason No. 2: Progress. Have you ever heard of Pareto’s Principle or the 80/20 rule? Eighty percent of your progress comes from 20 percent of your efforts. Most of your progress in the gym is made when you do heavy compound movements correctly. When was the last time

What is Reiki?
COMMENTARY By Sally Feldman Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands,” and it is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” or “Universal,” and Ki which is “life force energy.” So, Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Many have reported the sensation of heat and total relaxation during a session. If you are recovering from surgery, feeling sick with disease, overcoming an addiction, or healing a wound, you may recover naturally after experiencing a “Reiki-attunement.”
While Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice the following universal, ethical ideals to promote peace and
harmony: “The secret art of inviting happiness is the miraculous medicine of all diseases. Just for today, do not anger. Do not worry, and be filled with gratitude. Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people. Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer. Pray these words to your heart and chant these words with your mouth.” - The founder, Mikao Usui Go! Fight! Win back your health, Indiana. Let the massages (and Reiki) begin. Sally Feldman is a certified massage therapist and a member of Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals. Sunscreen may speed up skin damage
Mixing medications and food Diet can interact with medicine in two main ways. Some foods block the body’s ability to absorb certain medications, effectively reducing the dose a person receives. Other foods enhance the absorption of some drugs, which can lead to a possible overdose. For example, laboratory studies show that certain teas can block the effect of some medications. And switching to a low-fat diet, itself a healthy lifestyle change, could reduce the potency of some medications. Experts suggest that patients considering major dietary changes, such as switching to a much lower fat diet from a high-fat one, should discuss the move with their doctor. -www.wsj.com

Recently available data from an FDA study indicate that a form of vitamin A, retinyl palmitate, when applied to the skin in the presence of sunlight, may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions. The sunscreen industry adds vitamin A to 41 percent of all sunscreens. In the FDA’s 1-year study, tumors and lesions developed up to 21 percent sooner in lab animals coated in a vitamin A-laced cream than in control animals treated with a vitamin-free cream. Both groups were exposed to the equivalent of nine minutes of noontime Florida sunlight each day for up to a year. EWG recommends avoiding sunscreens with retinyl palmitate on the label. -www.ewg.org

The downside of online dating COMMENTARY By Rachael Noble I’m obviously a big advocate for online dating. I remember when the topic used to be taboo. People thought it was “dangerous” or that you were desperate to even think of doing such a thing. Thankfully, these days, more and more people are joining, giving us singles a wider range of choices and a chance to pursue someone we normally wouldn’t approach in public. But there can also be some cons to dating online. For instance, some people actually become “addicted” to the prospect that the grass may be greener on the other side. At first, it can be thrilling to realize there are hundreds of singles in their geographic area who have placed their profiles on the dating site. It’s almost like a kid in the candy store. Going from Saturday nights in the bar, trying to figure out if the person who catches their eye is single or not – to a place where one can know if the person is single, see their age, find out if they want kids, if they smoke, etc. – it’s like Christmas! But many times, good intentions of looking for Mr. Right can turn into always looking over the shoulder (so to speak) to see if there might be a better candidate. With so many choices,
why would one want to settle down with just one person? Now if you’re a person who just wants to play the field, at some point (preferably early on), the message needs to be conveyed that you’re not looking for a relationship. But if you’re looking for a real relationship, consider giving someone a fair chance. If you’ve met someone online and have been dating for several weeks, thinking this might be someone you’d like to get to know better, take your profile down and give it your 100 percent. I promise you, if after a few weeks of dating things are going well, if you continue to date other people, you are not building a trusting and healthy relationship and truly getting to know that person. Your judgment will be clouded by wondering if that next person who e-mails you online will be the next Ms. Right. So stop looking over the fence to see if the grass is greener and give that special someone a sporting chance.
No matter your sport or competition level, we can take you to the next level with

» Never leave your phone at home – Bringrr is a small Bluetooth accessory that detects when your phone is nearby. If you start your car and the phone isn’t present, it will emit a sound to let you know. It’s small, rather cheap ($35) and helps to ensure that you never leave home (or anywhere else, for that matter) without your phone. –www.ohgizmo.com
» Google to challenge Facebook? – Rumors have it that Google is building its own social networking site named “Google Me” that may be the company’s attempt to unseat Facebook. A popular guess is that it will be an expansion ofGoogle Profiles, which is a representation of how you appear on Google. - www.pcworld.com
» Microsoft bug exploited more than 10,000 times – In a blog post last week, Microsoft wrote that a flaw in Windows XP’s help and support center had been used more than 10,000 times to infect computers around the world with a variety of malware. The flaw was publicized last month by Google researcher Tavis Ormandy. Sophos researcher Graham Cluley for instance wrote in his blog that Ormandy had engaged in “utterly irresponsible behavior.” -www.forbes.com

iPhone 4 vs. Droid X
COMMENTARY By Gary Hubbard Since the original iPhone launched in January of 2007, it has been the clear leader in the consumer smartphone market. The iPhone has introduced so many new features and capabilities that it has been the smartphone over the past couple years. Although the iPhone is currently the most popular consumer smartphone, the competition is heating up and making it less obvious which device has the most to offer consumers. With the upcoming release of the Droid X, Motorola is giving Apple a solid run for its money. To that end, I’ll compare some of the major features between the two phones so you can understand the strengths and weaknesses. Processor: Both phones have a 1GHz processor (but from different vendors), so until the Droid X is actually released, it’s difficult to draw any distinctions at this point. Display: The Droid X has a bigger display than iPhone 4 (4.3 inches vs 3.5 inches), but the iPhone has a higher resolution (960x640 vs 854x480). As a comparison, the iPhone 3GS has a 480x320 resolution screen. In most cases,
higher resolution on a smaller screen is more pleasing to the eye, but until we can compare them side-by-side on the same content, it’s all speculation. Higher resolution always means sharper graphics, text and most importantly, more display space per screen (which means a little less scrolling). Storage: The Droid X is a clear winner in this category, because it has more storage in its base model (24GB vs 16GB) and has an upgradeable system instead of the fixed memory on the iPhone. The Droid has 8GB of internal memory and uses microSD cards for additional memory. Battery: The single biggest complaint from iPhone users (besides the AT&T network) is the battery life. Apple claims it increased talk time from five to seven hours on iPhone 4 with the same 300-hour standby time. Droid X is claiming an eight-hour talk time with a 220-hour standby time. Camera: If you simply read specs, the eightmegapixel Droid X seems to be significantly better than the five-megapixel iPhone 4, but there’s much more to a camera’s image than the megapixel rating. Many camera manufacturers play on this lack of understanding and make sure that they have more “pixels” than their competition. For just about any use of an image
that you take with your smartphone, five megapixels is more than adequate (the iPhone 3GS only had a three-megapixel camera). What may be more important are some of the other features: Droid X has two LEDs for a flash, while the iPhone 4 has one. The IPhone 4 has both a camera lens in back and front, allowing for video conferencing (but only with another iPhone 4 user at this point). Apps: iPhone – 225,000; Droid 65,000. Apple has a clear lead in this area. Finally, you must consider the networks each of these devices is tied to (at least for now). The pitfalls of the iPhone’s AT&T network are well publicized and the Droid’s Verizon network is routinely awarded the best of the best. AT&T also recently eliminated its unlimited data plan, and Verizon has hinted it will follow suit, but as of this writing, Verizon still offers an unlimited data plan (very important if you are a Pandora or YouTube fanatic). For the time being, the safest decision would be to wait for the Droid X to launch and let things settle down a bit. Gary Hubbard is the owner of Data Doctors Computer Services - www.datadoctors.com. Dinner this week was a little fishy COMMENTARY By Dick Wolfsie I told a lie to my wife. A whopper, really. I am still not sure I got away with it. I’m a bad fibber, and Mary Ellen is quite perceptive, so it’s unlikely she bought it. If she did believe me, reading this will be the first time she finds out the truth. So whose stupid idea was it to write this column? Here’s what happened. My son graduated from college and moved back at home. We’re encouraging him to go out on his own, but with the job market the way it is, we could be looking at a couple of decades of his residing in the basement storage area, since his old room became my home office. Part of the new living arrangement is that Mary Ellen, Brett and I alternate nights to prepare dinner. Brett has actually produced some tasty meals. He whipped up an awesome beef stroganoff, a respectable platter of salmon cakes and a tasty pasta primavera. We should have never let him leave home. I have always been a failure in the kitchen. When I have an overflowing anxiety about something, my performance is hampered and the results are disappointing. Last Monday, I had disappointed everyone with a pathetic pot roast,
so I needed a sure-fire way to redeem myself. The first thing I did was buy a pound of this scrumptious shrimp salad from a gourmet shop in my neighborhood. That was only the beginning of my ruse. I bought some additional frozen shrimp and stuck them in the fridge, in plain sight. Then I left a bottle of balsamic vinegar on the counter and lined up a few stalks of half-chopped celery on the cutting board. I also put some mixing bowls in the sink and filled them with soapy water. I took two large wooden spoons, slathered them with mayo and then partially rinsed them off. This mess had my name all over it. The sham took me an hour to pull off, about 20 minutes longer than it would have taken to make a real shrimp salad. Of course, it would have been a lousy shrimp salad and anyone can make a lousy shrimp salad. It takes talent to pretend you made a great shrimp salad. When Mary Ellen got home that night she surveyed the kitchen. “Well, it looks like you’ve spent all day in here,” she said. Perfect. Moments later we all sat down to eat. I watched as she took her first bite. “Dick, this tastes like you bought it somewhere.” I was never so insulted in my life. Or was I flattered? I had to quickly ascertain the meaning of the
remark. Here were the possibilities: • I hadn’t fooled her. She caught me. Yikes! • I fooled her. But it tasted awful, like from the Target deli counter. Yuck! • I fooled her. And it was delicious, like I got it at an expensive seafood restaurant. Yum! Brett began spearing dark, BB-sized things out of the salad and flicking them onto his napkin. “Dad, what are these nasty-tasting doodads?” “Well, Brett, as any gourmet cook knows … those are … we call them … Thank goodness, my wife broke in. “They’re capers, Brett. Just one of the five or six exotic ingredients in this shrimp salad, about five or six more than were in your dad’s pot roast. By now, I was sure I had been caught, but I had to ask her point blank. “Mary Ellen, honestly what did you think about my contribution this week?” “It was fine, Dick, perfectly fine. Just a little fishy.” Dick Wolfsie is an author, columnist, and speaker. Contact him at wolfsie@aol.com.

Ruminations on the greatest dessert ever made COMMENTARY By Mike Redmond As everyone knows, the Greatest Dessert Ever Invented is the Boston cream pie, which isn’t a pie at all but a yellow cake split horizontally, filled with custard and topped with chocolate. Cake, pudding, chocolate. It doesn’t get much better than that. This is what I was thinking when I bought a one about the size of a manhole cover at one of those warehouse stores. You know, those places where you can get 5,000 envelopes at what looks like a really good price until you get home and realize 5,000 envelopes is about two lifetimes’ supply. Anyway, back to dessert: I was halfway through a piece of BCP, as those of us in the know like to call it, when I wondered: This isn’t pie and the cream isn’t cream. Two fibs in one name. Is Boston cream pie REALLY from Boston? Turns out it is. A quick check of the World Wide Interweb Thingie tells me it was invented by the chef Sanzian for the opening of the Parker House Hotel in 1855. Wow. Revolution AND dessert. You gotta
love Boston. BCP is the official dessert of the state of Massachusetts. A Boston cream pie doughnut (a Berliner with chocolate icing) is the official state doughnut. It also turns out that Massachusetts has an official bean (Boston baked) and muffin (corn), as well as cookie (chocolate chip). Indiana has an official dessert, sugar cream pie, but we seem to be lagging in the doughnut, bean and muffin departments. We are REALLY bringing up the rear compared to Oklahoma, which has an entire state meal: Fried okra, squash, cornbread, barbecue pork, biscuits, sausage and gravy, grits, corn, strawberries, chicken fried steak, pecan pie and black-eyed peas. My word. That’s a state meal? I’d call it the entire menu. If that’s what they consider a meal out in Oklahokie, those poor folks must be sweating gravy. This will never happen in Indiana. We’re still fighting about what time it should be. There’s no way we could reach consensus as to the state foods. I’m pretty sure we’d all agree on tomatoes and

sweet corn, but it would all fall apart after that. Take the main course. Some would say it should be the pork tenderloin sandwich, and they’d be right. Others would argue for chicken and noodles, served on a bed of mashed potatoes, and they’d be right, too. And some would say it should be both. Those would be the people who recently moved here from Tulsa. Dessert’s taken care of, I guess, although I personally don’t care as much for sugar cream pie as I do for black raspberry pie (especially warm, with vanilla ice cream). Persimmon pudding has a nice Hoosier quality about it, too. Breakfast? There is no state breakfast because there is simply no agreement between the biscuits and gravy people in the south and the mush and headcheese people in the north. How would you compromise? Biscuits and mush? Amazing, the sort of things that pop into your head while you’re eating a piece of warehouse store Boston cream pie. And since I have about 90 percent of the thing left to go, I imagine my imagination’s going to get a workout over the next week or so. Starting with figuring out what I can do with 5,000 envelopes. The word of the day for outdoor junkies COMMENTARY By Randy Sorrell Retrofitting, the new verb for partially updating or renovating your surroundings, is suddenly gaining traction as a cost-effective tool to update your home without an exhaustive remodel. Outdoor living spaces continue to entice consumers’ attention, particularly this time of year when even the most die-hard TV addicts are occasionally tempted to wander outside. For outdoor junkies like you and I, patios, decks, landscapes and grilling are more than a priority ... they are a way of life! Most of us already have some sort of deck or patio but would prefer that it have a little more lively character or feel more welcoming. Often, simple solutions are easy to implement. Consider a few of the following retrofits: • Tired of the wood spindle look? One of our favorite edgy solutions is the sleek look of black aluminum spindles that seem to disappear when married with the right handrail. They are less bulky than traditional wood spindles and are almost maintenance free. Stainless steel cable ran vertically or horizontally and tempered safety glass has a contemporary feel and is ideal for environments that command uninterrupted views. Epcot smartly employed a black poly coated mesh for a long boardwalk that would be great for an experimental feel. • Often a combination of built in bench structures with an updated spindles and railing system work wonders.
Submitted photos
• Another huge impact can be accomplished by updating worn out decking material and/or the deck footprint. The supporting joist system is typically in great shape unless the wood is hugging the ground and void circulation. The painful debate of what material to use may be exhausting with many materials available from pine (insist on premium with fewer knots), warm cedar (whose price has taken a delightful nose dive recently) to my favorite, the synthetics like Azek, Trex and ChoiceDek. • Adjusting step systems to increase accessibility, traffic flow and stimulate an open feel can have a surprisingly elegant result.
Great news, similar techniques can be employed with brick patios and concrete slabs too. Retrofitting: A smart way to update, expand and create your unique outdoor living space without completely violating the budget. Favorite perennial? Give me the happy-go-lucky geranium COMMENTARY By Holly Funk I’m frequently asked about my favorite perennial and I find myself torn like I’ve been asked to choose a favorite child. The question is a sticky one, but I do have a favorite. I am absolutely mad for perennial geranium. Each and every geranium is equally wonderful to me. I’ve loved them as long as I can remember having planted a variety of them at every opportunity on almost every property I’ve gardened. I never grow tired of including them in my garden designs, and they never fail to perform, in shade or the sun. This geranium is not your mom’s red geranium, complete with trailing vinca and a spike in a pot on the porch. That annual geranium actually belongs to the genus Pelargonium; why it is dubbed geranium, I’ve not a clue. Perennial geranium has very little in common with the annual and, in fact, there isn’t a red one to be found. Regardless, in shades of blue, violet, pink and white, this perennial is the perfect plant for any gardener, requiring no special care without overstaying its welcome.
I love geraniums especially because of their extended period of flowering. Rozanne is said to flower even longer than most – rivaling the showiest of annuals. It’s a low-growing perennial with handsome, finely cut foliage that could carry it even without the blooms; it flowers relentlessly, flowering early in the season until the fall. With very little attention, this plant is a real show-stopper. A light trimming of last season’s foliage in the spring gets it growing until another light trimming between flushes of flowering. Fairing well in shade as well as sun, it makes an effective groundcover, if that is the purpose you seek. The least bit of attention can make this happy-go-lucky plant even more content. And if you happen to forget, it won’t hold anything against you. Unlike your favorite child. Holly Funk is an Indiana accredited horticulturist and advanced master gardener residing in Noblesville. Email your gardening woes (or wisdom) to hollyfunk75@yahoo.com.
