The number of personal injury accidents on Carmel roads has declined in recent years despite an increase in population, according to the Carmel Police Dept. Preliminary numbers show that 2017 transportation is on pace to decrease even more. This continues a trend in Carmel going back to 1996. There were 216 personal injury accidents that year for a city with a population of 31,808. In 2016, there were 215 personal injury accidents for a population of 91,374. Per capita, Carmel has seen a 44 percent decrease in accidents the past 20 years, going from a rate of 0.68 percent to 0.24 percent. “These numbers are huge,” Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard said. “Our population has tripled, but the injury accidents have actually gone down.” Brainard took office in 1996, and he attributes the decrease in the accident rate to the city’s investment in roundabouts. The first one was built after Brainard took Brainard office, and today there are more than 100. Dozens more are planned. Brainard said roundabouts decrease injury accidents because they virtually eliminate the possibility of head-on collisions. According to the CPD report, fatal accidents have remained steady at one or two per year, although the population has increased. Property damage accidents have increased every year, but they have remained consistent with the city’s population growth, hovering around 2.5 percent. As of June 29, Brainard said Carmel had 101 personal accident injuries for 2017. The total is on pace to be lower than 2016, he said. Brainard said Indianapolis has remained consistent with a personal injury accident rate of about 0.60 percent, which was similar to Carmel’s rate in 1996. “Today, you’re three times as likely to have a personal injury accident in Indianapolis than Carmel,” Brainard said.

Celebrating our Freedom The American Flag expresses America’s commitment to freedom, equality, and opportunity. The three colors of the American flag are symbolic of our core beliefs: red for courage, white for purity and blue for loyalty. We enjoy the liberty we have today because of all the brave souls who came before us and those who serve us now, especially those who risked or gave their lives to provide us with enduring freedom.

July 3rd was a fantastic day and crowds filled the festival to enjoy the KidZone rides and petting zoo, the MarketPlace, food galore, and an array of performers on three stages,. The CarmelFest Gazebo stage area was packed with blankets and chairs for people watching CarmelFest Has Talent (which was Fantastic!). The ever popular Wright Brothers celebrated 45 years together as a band and played some of their original tunes that made them famous. Many enthusiastic fans claimed the Wright Brothers' performance was the best ever! The North Zone stage launched a new program for the day's entertainment called the "Hoosier Crossroads Music Festival". The program brought together incredibly talented bands and musicians. Even, A small bout of rain on July 4th didn't keep away the CarmelFest attendees. The Indy Eleven CarmelFest Parade was one of the best ever with Korean War Vets as Grand Marshals, marching bands, international dancers, the Chinese Dragon and more. The parade was a huge hit with over 25,000 attendees (many who set out their chairs and blankets 3 days before the event). Despite short pauses for rain, entertainment and rides continued

throughout the day on July 4th. The evening concluded with a Spectacular Fireworks Display sponsored by Centier Bank. The colorful array hitting the skies was amazing. This year's fireworks show had more tons of fire-power that shot higher into the night sky. Keeping with our 29 year CarmelFest tradition, a little rain did not stop us from celebrating Independence Day as a community with family and friends and neighbors.

Josh Kirsh, an engineering administrator for the City of Carmel, was at the construction of the 136th Street and history Gray Road roundabout on June 29. It was “drastically behind” schedule, Kirsh said, because of utility work, so he was on site checking the progress when he noticed something by his foot. It looked like an unusual rock, but Kirsh quickly identified that it might be important. “I thought it was either really old or really odd,” he said. “I thought it was maybe 200 years old.” Turns out it’s a “banner stone,” a multitool used by native settlers possibly as long ago as 4,000 years. Kirsh said he was excited about the find but also joked that he didn’t want to put the project further behind schedule. “My knee-jerk reaction was, ‘Of course,’” he said. “We’re running out of utilities to run into. Of course, I’d find an ancient artifact on the site.” Kirsh talked to Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard who immediately halted digging and contacted the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources, which investigated the incident and deemed it an isolated find that should not hinder the project unless more artifacts are found. Kirsh also called Conner Prairie for assistance and texted a few photos to its director of artifacts who preliminarily confirmed that the rock was indeed old and likely used as a tool. Banner stones are noted for their centered hole and are the subject of debate among archaeologists over their purpose. “People joked that it was an ‘ancient fidget spinner’ and it kind of is,” Kirsh said. “It could have been used to spin threads. It was a multi-use tool of sorts.”

Rabbi Stanley Halpern started the Shabbark Erev Shabbat Service 15 years ago in Gary, Ind. and has been putting on the special service for the Congregation Beth Shalom for the last five years. “Judaism has always had special obligations to animals,” Halpern said. “We are obligated to properly take care of those that we share the Earth with.” Halpern said there is something striking about how all of the dogs behave and participate in the service. “There is something special about that, almost like they glow,” Halpern said. “I think they understand that we are reaching out to them and saying how important they are in our lives.” The 40-minute service will feature special guest speaker Fred Coraz, who works with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police

Carmel’s Craig Mince manages IMAX, helps direct Indy Film Fest By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Craig Mince definitely mixes business with pleasure. “I do movies by day and movies by night, so to speak,” Mince said. cover story The Carmel resident’s full-time job is as IMAX theater manager. His pastime is a volunteer role as artistic director for the 14th annual Indy Film Fest, which is set for July 13 to 23 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It will include a combined screening total of 95 feature and short films from approximately 20 nations. Prior to becoming artistic director, Mince served as executive director for the previous few years. Executive director is the most time-consuming role, he said. “I’ve scaled back a little bit this year. We try to shift around to give some depth to the bench,” Mince said. “In an all-volunteer organization, you have to do that to make sure people don’t get burned out and people don’t leave and take that institutional knowledge with them.” Mince has been with the festival for nine years, also serving as program director and board president. “(My duty) is making sure through the film selection process that these movies, outside of the juried content, align themselves with the normal artistic

direction the festival goes in as far as content and style of films,” said Mince, a 1995 Carmel High School graduate. “I mainly deal with the studios.” Indy Film Fest Executive Director Dan Moore said Mince’s contributions are crucial. “Film is his day job and his passion,” Moore said. “He’s always talking about films.” Mince said the films are usually about a year behind the hot topics in society. “This year I haven’t been that involved with the juried content, but in years past it’s been comedy,” Mince said. “We’ve had a lot of environmental films as of late. My guess is not this cycle, but the next cycle we’ll probably see a lot of political films. It’s really kind of catching up to the topic and subject matter that society is kind of interested in.” The three categories are American Spectrum, which feature domestic films, documentaries and world cinema. Mince said in each category there is a feature-length and short film. “Some of them are still working on distribution, but most of them are movies you are not going to see in a theater for a few years at this point,” Mince said. As IMAX manager, Mince operates and programs the theater. “A lot of it is Hollywood, but we do a lot of traditional IMAX documentaries as well since we are inside the Indiana State Museum,” Mince said. “So we do a lot of institutional films as well. Right now the trend in cinema is to do a lot of 3-D, both from the IMAX and Hollywood standard. It’s a 75 to 25 mix of 3-D to 2-D.” Mince has been with the IMAX Theater since it reopened in the Indiana State Museum in 2002. “I was working for a hotel out of college, and they had closed down the IMAX Theater to build the museum,” Mince said. “I’ve always been a big movie buff. It’s kind of been a passion of mine. But I was never thinking it would be a career for me. They had opened a couple of positions at the

A Hoosier Lens award is given to any film that has roots in Indiana in both the feature and short film categories. “We have a Grand Jury prize, which is a best of the fest, if you will,” Mince said. “In total, we give out a little less than $7,000 in prize money. For an all-volunteer organization, that’s not too bad.” Along with awards in each category, there is an audience award for feature and short. It’s a unique position because I get to do a lot of things that most people in this community don’t get to do, from programming to dealing with studio reps.” Mince said he has a marketing budget, which allows him to market films, which a lot of theater chains don’t do. “It’s a way of working in the movie industry without having to live in L.A. or New York,” Mince said.

Phase 1 parenting success

o b s e r v a tion Reaching terminal stressocity

Commentary by Danielle Wilson

Commentary by Terry Anker The law of terminal velocity holds that if an object is falling from a great height, it will gain speed only until it reaches the attraction limit of the gravity pulling it earthward. In other words, the planet is drawing the thing to it (defining its weight). Without gravity, the object would not fall at all – and would have no “weight” in the way we might imagine. Please forgive the physics lesson, but the notion that all things will come to their natural limit is an intriguing one. Although we may find our constraints at different paces, each, in due time, will max out! At a wedding recently, the otherwise lovely outdoor affair was witness to an approaching, and ominous, rainstorm. Even as the staff scurried to move the band and other gear inside before the squall, one imagined what would be the harm if we all got a little wet? In the first moments, we might scramble to protect delicate garments or arrangements of hair. But as the drops came, we’d soon be wet. So wet that we couldn’t get any wetter. We would achieve the terminal velocity of wetness. Could we apply the same concept to others of our fears? Is there a maximum amount of stress someone can take before reaching terminal stressocity – the point where no more can be managed or absorbed? And, if so, should we all relax just a bit knowing that a breaker switch is standing guard? Just as a cup can only hold so much liquid, should we think more about its contents and have less concern for the overflow? Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. READERS ’ V I EWS Another view of the Paris Agreement Editor, We must respectfully disagree with Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard’s assessment of the Paris Agreement that was published in the June 13 edition of Current. The U.S. has been a leader and will continue to be in protecting the environment. I disagree with his assessment that “Republicans will understand that protecting the environment goes beyond carbon emissions.” Republicans frequently are branded with being antienvironment when the opposite is true. For example, the EPA was established during the Nixon administration by executive order. Republicans look for solutions that strike a balance on issues and also encourage entrepreneurial creativity to effectively solve problems rather than costly government solutions. China is the largest producer of carbon dioxide emissions, accounting for almost 30 percent. The United States is 14.3 percent, and we are aggressively reduc-

ing the emissions. The Paris Agreement permits Russia to increase its emissions approximately 50 percent while China and India have no meaningful cap on until 2030. I suspect that by 2030 China’s contribution of emissions will significantly continue to rise while the U.S. will continue to drop without the agreement. The agreement by its own calculations produces no significant impact on global temperatures. Based on the EPA’s own models, if the U.S. eliminated all of its carbon emissions, global temperatures would only decrease by less than 0.2 of a degree Celsius. Withdrawal from the commitment will have little to no effect on our nation’s commitment and progress toward protecting the environment. We see it as a rejection of a bad deal that severely and carelessly impacts our economy while allowing other countries to effectively do nothing for more than a decade. Greg and Kelly Brown Carmel

It occurred to me that Doo and I are in the midst of a monumental year of parenting. Our youngest turned humor 13 in the spring, leaving us with only teenagers as roommates. Then the twins celebrated their 16th birthdays yesterday, after having recently obtained driving permits. And barring incarceration, we’ll be dumping our oldest curbside at his yet unnamed IU dormitory in just six short weeks. Go us! Not surprisingly, I’m frequently asked, “How do you feel about (insert milestone)?” The answer is always a resounding, “Faneffing-tastic!” I’m not kidding. True, when I reflect on my role as a mother in the context of preparing my precious little angels to go out into the world as responsible, kind, civic-orientated adults, I’m almost always second-guessing myself. Do they really understand the importance of recycling? Should I have listened more to their problems and fixed less? Why does the Chore Chart never seem to work? But when I stand back and look at the young men and women they’re becoming, I can easily give myself and Doo pats on the back. First, they all survived. That may not sound like a big deal, but back in 2004, when I had three in diapers and a fourth who liked to take his pants off at the public library while screaming, “Mommy, wipe my bottom,” my mantra was simply “Keep them alive until dinner.” Second, all are on track to eventually find jobs and move out. I’m 95 percent confident that none of my children will end up as basement-dwelling moochers in their 30s. So congratulations to Doo and me. First phase of parenting almost complete! Peace out. Death by vending machine Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I just returned from my brother’s wedding in New York City, and I am happy to report that things went off humor without a hitch ... except for Peter. He got hitched for the first time, which was about the last thing I expected him to do at age 66. My family was strolling along Sixth Avenue on Thursday, and I stopped at the spot where once sat a Horn and Hardart Automat, the world’s biggest “vending machine.” Inside the restaurant was a giant wall covered with hundreds of small compartments, each with shiny glass doors. Customers would put in coins, slide the door open and grab a serving of creamed spinach, Salisbury steak, meatloaf or homemade apple pie. At one time, the slots only took nickels. I’m not old enough to remember back that far. Behind those little doors was a mammoth kitchen where men and women in starched white uniforms slid cherry cobbler into the oven and basted the huge turkeys to be roasted. If your favorite vegetable was not in its slot, you simply vocalized, “GOT ANY CREAMED SPINACH?” Before

you knew it, a hand appeared and placed the succulent side dish within your grasp. In 2016, 14 people were killed by vending machines. I assumed it was from bad chicken salad, but apparently it was the machine falling on folks who had lost their temper and began shaking the behemoth. Last week, I put a buck in a dispenser for a cup of coffee. I pressed extra cream and extra sugar. The piping hot beverage came bubbling out exactly as I had programmed it. The aroma of freshly brewed java wafted into my nose, but the precious liquid swirled down the drain hole. There was no cup. Ain’t technology great? Now, machines even drink your coffee for you. Horn and Hardart closed in 1991, selling many of their locations to Burger King. Occasionally, for old time’s sake, when I place my drive-thru order, I scream, “GOT ANY CREAMED SPINACH?”

CrossFit, a fitness regimen that combines Olympic lifting, gymnastics and highintensity interval training, workout has grown to more than 13,000 participants worldwide since it was created in 2000. Two Carmel businesses affiliated with the CrossFit brand have reported considerable growth in interest in the workout. There are two CrossFit gyms in Carmel: Three Kings CrossFit, 12292 Hancock Street, and CrossFit Carmel, 1071 3rd Ave SW. Three Kings, which has 90 members and has been in business for four years, is already seeing its members qualify and compete for regional and national CrossFit events. Last year, Three Kings had a team qualify for the CrossFit Games in California, and they finished 21st in the world. “They love the challenge each workout brings, and how it pushes them to be better than they were the day before,” coowner Scott Saucedo said. Meanwhile, CrossFit Carmel is more focused on running and triathlon training. “Where a lot of CrossFit gyms focus on strength more than endurance, our focus is

In 2017, this gym will have six members participating in an Ironman triathlon event in Muncie. Saucedo said he thinks TV coverage, such as the CrossFit Games, has helped grow interest in the sport. “It also helps to have so many members that post on social media,” he said. “When people are having fun and getting great results they naturally want to invite others to join them.”

Mental health campaign – Carmel recently joined eight other central Indiana cities to launch “Campaign to Change Direction,” an initiative to educate about the warning signs of mental health issues. The Women’s Fund of Central Indiana is leading the awareness campaign, which includes support from Indianapolis, Noblesville, Westfield, Fishers and others. The goal is to educate the public about the five warning signs for mental health issues: personality change, agitation, withdrawal, poor self-care and hopelessness. Read more at CurrentinCarmel.com.

Do you remember Rosie, the robot from The Jetsons? We've also seen intelligent computer assistants in Star Trek, Back to the Future, and Star Wars. With so many portrayals of artificial intelligence in art and entertainment, you would think it's about time we had something like Rosie with us. And the incredible news is we are getting closer to that reality every day. Last year, Amazon created Alexa, a voice control software that runs on the smart speakers called the Echo, the Dot, and the Tap. In this presentation, Jason Barth from The Premier Group will show you what it's like to incorporate this new technology into your home to control everything from televisions and music to lights, thermostats, and security systems.

Amy’s top picks for the 2017 Indy Film Fest Commentary by Amy Pauszek

“CHATTER BOX” A short film, showing at 7:30 p.m. July 16 and 3:30 p.m. July 22 The Chatter Box has been an Indianapolis bar since the 1930s but hasn’t always been the establishment that it is today. Current owner David Andrichik welcomes everyone to the historic bar where local jazz musicians can share their art every night of the week.

It’s that time of year again to grab your favorite film-buff pal and get to the annual Indy Film Fest. It’s one of my favorites because it has something for everyone and it’s one of the hottest festivals in town. The festival runs July 13 through July 23 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The Indianapolis 48 Hour Contest also will be featured at the festival. This is where local Indy filmmakers have 48 hours to write, cast and produce a short film. I have been a judge for five years and last year participated in a film just for fun. It’s a whirlwind of excitement but hard work. For tickets, visit indyfilmfest.org. Here’s the scoop on opening and closing night films and three of my favorite Hoosier films to see. Where’s Amy can’t wait to see you there! “THE THINGS WE’VE SEEN” A feature film, showing at 9:15 p.m. July 19 and 3:15 p.m. July 22 A boy searches for his fugitive father in a town struggling to survive.

“WIND RIVER” Opening night, showing at 7 p.m. July 13 An FBI agent teams up with a town’s veteran game-tracker to investigate a murder that occurred on a Native American reservation. “PATTI CAKE$” Closing night, showing at 7 p.m. July 22 Aspiring rapper Patricia Dombrowski (Patti Cake$) is fighting an unlikely quest for glory in her downtrodden hometown in New Jersey.

Parmesan-crusted salmon, just one of the many fantastic dishes at the new Tavern on South. (File photo)

Commentary by Mark Johnson

“DEAD DRAW” Feature film, showing at 9 p.m. July 17 and 8:15 p.m., July 21 Someone knows about the $25 million and the plane to Mexico. Someone killed the gateway pilot. As loyalty turns to suspicion and friends become enemies, four criminals try to find the rat and escape their past - if they can survive the night.

Where to go: Tavern on South Where it is: 423 W. South St., in Indianapolis When it’s open: Monday-Thursday: 11 a.m.- 9 p.m., Friday: 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Saturday: noon -10 p.m., Sunday: Closed (open at 10 a.m. for 1 p.m. games), Bar: Monday-Saturday until close. Mark’s Take: Tavern on South has all bases covered. By that, I mean this restaurant meets all dining wants: families, large parties or couples. Two levels of comfortable seating, indoor and outdoor, make for a unique dining experience. Picture windows offer grand views of downtown Indianapolis, and a relaxed atmosphere complete the experience. What to get: This is a menu that you’ll really want to explore: An array of seasonal items made with fresh ingredients. My recommendation is sweet n’ sour chicken thighs, wok-seared and served with baby corn, snow peas, water chestnuts, red bell pepper and house Szechwan. It has just the right amount of spice with a tangy aftertaste. What’s the cost: Entrees between $16-$31 To learn more, visit tavernonsouth.com. You can also contact the restaurant at 317-6023115 and follow on Facebook and Twitter.

Jwala Rejimon wants to share her love. “There is an organization that promotes Indian classical music but there Event wasn’t an organization for Indian classical dance,” Jwala said. “Nritya means dance and priya means lover, so it’s just an organization to present classical traditional Indian dance.” Nrityapriya Fine Arts will present Sri Rama Charitham, which is based on Ramayana, at 3:30 p.m. July 16 at Westfield High School’s auditorium, 18250 N. Union St. Nrityapriya Fine Arts is a nonprofit organization with a portion of funds donated to promote Indiana Classical Arts in the U.S. Jwala, 18, who will be a sophomore at Purdue majoring in speech and language and hearing sciences, graduated from Carmel High School in 2016. CHS grad wins talent show

2017 SUMMER CAMPS

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For Taylor Bickett, the CarmelFest Has Talent competition seemed like a good tune-up for the Songbook music Academy. Bickett, who graduated from Carmel High School in May, was announced as one of 40 Songbook Academy finalists May 31. The Songbook Academy, an intensive program, closes with the Songbook Youth Ambassador selection July 22 at Carmel’s Palladium. “Just any singing experience I could get and the fact all my friends were able to come,” Bickett said of her reasons for entering the show. “They were super supportive.” Bickett captured the 18-and-older competition July 4 at the Gazebo Stage at CarmelFest. “The competition was so tough,” Bickett said. “I was amazed at how talented everyone was.” Bickett sang “Rise Up” by Andra Day, both in the semifinals July 3 and the finals July 4. “We sang it in Ambassadors and I had the solo with it, and I just loved it,” said Bickett, who had previously performed in

Meg Meredith Robinson, Plymouth, won the 12-and-under division, followed by Ruby Schoette, Indianapolis, in second and Lauren Sciaudone, Westfield, in third. Get outside and enjoy Commentary by Randy Sorrell

317.770.7070

More questions from the desk, life and office of Randy. Care to expand on ROE (Reoutdoor turn On Enjoyment) from last article? living You bet! I would encourage us to contemplate ROE as much, or more, as we do ROI (Return On Investment). After all, enjoyment is likely what’s driving most outdoor living spaces and interior remodels. I’ve witnessed an amazing volume of life changes fueled by cool spaces. Families come together, more books are read, less TV watched. The phones get put down, faces look up. It’s our industry’s greatest accomplishment. Any cool new plant materials on the horizon? Growers are constantly tweaking plant varieties to increase resilience, flower more, be less prone to insect and diseases, etc. What has me jazzed are the columnar varieties just hitting our market. Columnar Hornbeams and Gingkos are spectactular. Expensive, but spectacular. Those, along with colum-

nar boxwood, buckthorns and crimson barberries marry well with courtyard scenarios where space is at a premium and gaining verticality critical. The columnar trees are great for immediate patio privacy! What’s the source of leading-edge ideas being implemented locally? Inspiration comes from competition,

squeezed budgets, provocative clients, “whiteboarding”, Houzz and edgy magazines like Dwell. They flow from a Friday afternoon break at The Pint Room where brilliant, crazy solutions seem to sharply flow. On a wet napkin. Preferred patio material? Our preference is ideally sparked by the client’s home, budget, setting, preferences. However, any time we can employ natural stone, I’m a happy dude. Final thoughts? Cut the cable, get outside, breathe, smile and go to any outdoor concert you can. It’s all music. Project photo details? Repeat Carmel client, large cedar deck expansion with a scorching sun issue. We resolved with a sexy pergola and recessed blind that confidently handles the late afternoon/evening sun. Hugely colorful landscape for drama!

tal of an evil kingdom. After killing Kansa and freeing the people, Krishna rested alongside the Yamuna River before returning to Vrindavan. Today, Mathura, with a population of about 600,000, is the home of a major temple honoring the birth of Krishna. It also is the home of 25 ghats, temples for worshipping Krishna and stepping down into the Yamuna River. Vishran Ghat, the most important, remembers where Krishna rested after killing Kansa and is the start and finish of a circumambulation of Mathura’s most holy places.

The Yamuna River is second only to the Ganges in spiritual importance to Indians. Mathura, located on its banks about 90 miles southeast of Delhi, is travel one of India’s holiest cities. The Yamuna River has its source in the Lower Himalayas and passes through Delhi and Agra, the home of the Taj Majal, before finally joining the sacred Ganges. For Hindus, the Yamuna River is the goddess Yamuna, the daughter of the sun god and the brother of Yama, the god of death.
