SPIRIT OF CARMEL JACK BADGER HAS ENDURED FAMILY TRAGEDY TO KEEP HOPE ALIVE FOR HIS FELLOW CARMEL RESIDENTS

A string of tragedies – losing two sons to untimely deaths and seeing his wife diagnosed twice with cancer and once with liver failure – could cause any person to lose his lease on life. But for Jack Badger, these tragedies have fueled a passion for giving back to his community. As a Carmel resident for 41 years, Badger, 72, has impacted the community tremendously, according to Jeff Worrell, director of the city’s volunteer initiative, Carmel Can. “His willingness to give his time and talent are really what make him an amazing volunteer,” Worrell said of Badger. “He wants to see good things happen. He is a humble, nice and generous man.” Badger devotes about 30 hours a week to volunteering for the Carmel Dad’s Club, American Liver Foundation, Carmel High School Athletics, Carmel United Methodist Church and many other local organizations. His involvement with the Dad’s Club started more than 30 years ago, when his son Mark died at the age of 10 from an inoperable brain tumor. As a tribute to his son’s memory, Badger maintains the Mark Badger Memorial Park. “I saw it as an opportunity to do something significant for the Carmel community and honor our son Mark,” Badger said. Jack Beery, president of the Carmel Dad’s Club, said Badger’s influence on the club has been immeasurable. “So very often I’ll show up at work and Jack is there, doing whatever needs to be done,” Beery said. “He always steps up for the club whenever he is needed.” Also a board member for the American Liver Foundation’s Heartland Division, which serves Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky, Badger gives back to the system that saved his wife Ila’s life. Through a liver transplant in 2001, Ila overcame a nearly life-ending disease, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. When Badger’s oldest son David died of cardiac arrest in 2006, he was able to become a complete tissue donor. In an essay Ila wrote as part of a contest for Astellas, the drug company that makes her medication, Ila explained how her and her husband’s lives came full circle. “A few months after his death we learned that one of David’s heart valves saved the life of a 3-week-old little girl in Wisconsin,” she wrote. “We rejoice with her family as we celebrate our beloved son. Like our donor family, we understand that knowing our son saved the lives of others has helped us in our grieving process.” In all, David’s donation saved the lives of seven individuals. In order to ensure that donations benefit other families like they have the Badgers, Jack and Ila volunteer as BMV Buddies for the local license branch and the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization. Good call. ••• Just a reminder: The Keystone and 116th Street intersection closes today, but there’s still access to Merchant’s Square, so please be patient and continue to patronize your favorite merchants there. The 136th Street and Keystone intersection opens tomorrow (Aug. 5) with a ribbon cutting at noon. ••• We hear a new restaurant, La Mie Emilie, is reportedly opening soon in downtown Carmel in the old Bistro de Paris location on Main Street. We hear they will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. Owners are Emilie Myers and her mother, Cathy. More later as details unfold. ••• Good news for runners, bikers and walkers: Construction began July 27 on Westfield’s Monon Trail north from the first mile and ending at 161st Street. The construction is scheduled to be completed

According to Westfield city officials, this section of the Monon Trail in Westfield will be one of the most scenic sections, with beautiful views overlooking wooden wetlands. During this construction, the trail will not be open for public use. ••• With all the talk about healthcare reform, is it just us, or does the mere thought of our government having accesses to our health records send a chill down your spine? ••• How about a Cash for Clunkers program for voters? STATE FAIR GEARING UP FOR BIG OPENING Hand-washing stations. Designated smoking areas. Air-conditioned buildings. Tasteful landscaping. A row of new and refurbished structures on the once sparcely populated “north side.” More days – five more – and “more fun,” as they advertise, at the Indiana State Fair (Aug. 7-23). This is not your father’s state fair. In fact, if you haven’t been to the fun at Fall Creek and 38th Street in the last decade, this is probably not the fair you remember either. Beginning with an $8 million renovation of the West Pavilion – aka The Cattle Barn – in 2001 and through millions more in construction and renovations, the nation’s sixth-oldest state fair has followed the lead set forth by theme parks who repeatedly “reinvent themselves” with some new mega-attraction to get people coming back for more. “We actually don’t want to be another King’s Island,” says Margaret Davidson of Carmel, who as director of presentation/development for the fair has helped shape some of its changes. “We’re bigger and DAVIDSON better than that. We have a much broader mission.” “But we do study what they do, and what they do is keep it fresh. You repackage it with something new and something different, so that the person who says ‘’ already went to the fair; why should I go back?’ wants to go back.” Groundskeepers are theme-park finicky, too, about keeping the grounds clean and free of litter as they relentlessly collect what is tossed aside and keep trash receptacles hungry. To help keep patrons germ-free, there are more than a dozen hand-washing stations spread out over the 250-acre-property. And despite nature’s fragrance, which drifts uncontrollably from the swine, cattle and poultry barns – hey, what’s a state fair without it? – the fair is doing its part to keep the air free of cigarette smoke, while pleasing those who must light up with

Midway hours are noon to 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, noon to midnight Fridays, 11 a.m.-midnight Saturdays and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sundays. Gate admission is $8 for ages 6 and older. 811,025 – Average attendance over the last 10 years, which peaked at 900,365 in 2004. 1964 – The year the Beatles played two sold-out shows, one in the Grandstand and the other in the Coliseum. 45 – Number of acres inside the West Pavilion (Cattle Barn), the largest of its kind in the world. 31 – Percent of 4-H participants who are racial and ethnic minorities. 56 – Record for the most appearances at Band Day, held by Pike High School. 20 cents – Cost of admission for the first State Fair in 1852.

» VALUE OPS more than 20 isolated smoking stations. The biggest change, however, over the last five years has been the growth in what fair staffers refer to as the “north side,” once a quiet, neglected counterpart to the buzzing main drag co-anchored by the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand and the Pepsi Coliseum along the property’s south side and the Midway, which Davidson claims is the largest in the country. The north side is now home to the popular WFMS Free Stage, the 4-H Education Complex and Centennial Hall, which received a $7.5 million makeover in 2004, a 4-yearold, 3,400-square-foot 1800s-style barn in Pioneer Village and the Indiana DNR Building with its kid-friendly Fishin’ Pond. “The change has been an evolution over time led by some great people at the top who realized that they had something that was popular with people and that they needed to invest back into the buildings to keep up with the times. Years ago we didn’t have the money or the infrastructure to put much on the north side. Now, it’s just as busy up there as on the south side.” Another huge – and somewhat risky – change this year is the addition of five days to the fair schedule. The first fairhat opened in 1852 at what is now Military Park in Downtown Indianapolis ran for three days. For years, it was a 10-day event before expanding to 12 in 1982. Now it will extend to 15 days, covering three weekends. “Nobody really knows how that will affect things,” said Andy Klotz, the fair’s publicity and media relations director. “It’s been a couple of years in the planning, and we feel the timing is right.”

GETTING THERE The traditional mode of transportation is by automobile, but Hamilton County residents can take the greener road less traveled by train or bike. The WFMS FairTrain, run by the Indiana Transportation Museum in Noblesville, leaves the Government Center Complex at 116th Street in Fishers daily every 90 minutes, beginning at 8:45 a.m. Purchase advance roundtrip tickets at Hamilton County Key Banks: $11 adults, $5 ages 3-12. Bikers using the Fair’s Pedal and Park plan get a $1 discount on fair admission if they ride their way in on the Monon Trail and lock their bikes at the secured racks at 38th Street from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Pay $15 per vehicle for up to 10 people on BMV Carload Day Aug. 17 with voucher printed from www.mybmv.com; admission is just two bucks on Aug. 18’s Delta SkyMiles Tuesday with voucher printed from www.in.gov/statefair/fair/general/ value/html; also on Aug. 18, many concessionaires will have $2 samples; you’ll find more than $100 in discounts on food and other items with the $5 Value Coupon Book sold at the Tomato Patch Gift Shop or online at www.indianastatefair.com. The Midway also offers several $25 wristband specials good for riding all you want during special times.

» SO, THAT’S WHERE WOOL COMES FROM One of Davidson’s favorite spots at the fair is the barn area. “I love the barns. We get people from Carmel who didn’t grow up on a farm; they are very urban. It’s the first time some of them can see where wool really comes from. A walk through the barns is like a family event every single day.”

» DISABILITIES Parking is available for persons with disabilities inside Gate 1 and Gate 6. Wheelchair and electric vehicle rentals are available inside Gate 1A, in front of the Grand Hall and inside Gate 12.

CARMEL ‘HOME SWEET HOME’ TO BRITISH IMPORT PAUL EDMONDS Four years ago, the British company Paul worked for sent him to Indianapolis to set up the first plant outside England. They’d chosen Indianapolis because of its central location and great EDMONDS transportation system and had picked Greenwood as the site for its plant “because of low electric rates.” Paul and his wife studied the entire area for a home and picked Carmel, even though it was a long drive. They soon fell in love with the city. “Our two high school daughters were nervous, but they could not have been more warmly welcomed,” remembers Paul. “Our girls wanted to go to EVERY game in EVERY sport. We couldn’t believe how much more participation and ATTENDANCE there is here. In England, even parents hardly went to game.” Paul and wife Julie, still trying to become U.S. citizens, “Would go through almost anything to stay in the U.S. and in Carmel!” I only wish I could fit in all the other things he, Julie and the girls love about Carmel, Indiana and the U.S.A. We should all appreciate our home as much as the Edmonds!

s a native-born Indianapolis native and Carmel resident since 1977, I’ve run across what seems like hundreds of folks not native to Central Indiana who have “made a stand” and refused to leave here, whether they originally wanted to relocate here or not. The theme has gone something like this: “My company moved me here from my home town and five years later they wanted me to leave. I left Danny the company rather than O’Malia leave Carmel.” Recently I became friends with a friendly, outgoing native of Oxford, England named Paul Edmonds, who moved here four years ago to work for a company for which he’s no longer employed. And when Paul told me how badly he wants to stay here, it occurred to me it was time to comment on this phenomenon of “non-native Hoosiers who refuse to leave.” Because Paul’s dad was in the British Royal Air Force, he has lived all over the world (England, Canada, Austria, Belgium, France, New Zealand, Greece, Nigeria, Canada ) and traveled the U.S. extensively.

KEEPING CURRENT WITH CARMEL CLAY SCHOOLS By Andrea Zeek Current in Carmel

Superintendent Barb Underwood will retire this year.

When / Where Dec. 30

UNDERWOOD

Why / How Underwood said it’s just time for her to retire. And although retiring in the middle of the school year may sound bad, she said a December retirement will help the next superintendent transition into his or her new position because the 2010-2011 budget will already be finished and he or she will have six months to get to used to the district.

All schools have acquired new social studies textbooks, and teachers are being trained in the updated curriculum.

2009-2010 academic year

Jeff Swensson, assistant superintendent for curriculum instruction and assessment, said state law requires schools to update their social studies curriculum every six years – this is one of those years. “Knowledge in any subject area is always expanding,” he said.

The alternative program will be moving to a new location.

On the corner of Main and 4th streets, just west of Carmel High School.

The program will have more room to expand at its new location, Underwood said. The new location will be able to accommodate about 60 students, twice the number at the old location.

Schools are currently enrolling.

Underwood said the slower growth is understandable because of the struggling housing market. “The estimate was that we’d grow 275 students, I don’t know if we’ll reach that or not,” she said.

As of two weeks ago, 15,339 students were enrolled in the district. Although this is an increase of about 200 students from last year, it is not as significant an increase as past years.

WALGREENS: Walgreens offers some of the best deals around: There’s a private label called Studio 35 that has makeup tools, plus a generic skin-care line packed with incredibly cheap basics (many items actually cost less than a dollar).

s a certified wound-care physician, I have been using the benefits of growth factors for years to stimulate healthy cell growth in chronic, non-healing wounds. We now know that the same principles of growth factors in wound healing can be applied to reduce the signs of skin aging. Growth factors are proteins that bind to receptors on the cell surface, resulting in new cell growth. By promoting this Dr. Jodie Harper rapid cell turnover, ClarityMD new collagen is formed. Wounds heal faster, and patients have less scar tissue when these products are used. Collagen, as the main protein in wound healing, can also have dramatic effects on aging and sun-damaged skin. SkinMedica’s TNS (Tissue Nutrient Solution) is the original topical skincare product line containing “human” growth factors. With regular use of products like TNS, patients are able to take years off their appearance by reducing fine

lines and wrinkles, diminishing sunspots and smoothing the texture of their skin. Growth factors are also extremely beneficial following laser-based dermatologic procedures, enhancing wound healing and providing better, longer lasting results. By adding powerful antioxidants to the TNS growth factors, we have also seen additional benefits to skin regeneration and defense against environmental damage. Benefits of adding growth factors and antioxidants to your daily skin care routine: •

Reduces effects of aging by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles

Reduces effects of photo damage by diminishing the appearance of brown spots and roughness

Provides a natural defense against environmental damage

May reverse skin changes from sun damage, and in combination with UV protection, may aide in protecting you from developing skin cancer

Even the biggest exercise buffs still want to get the most out of their workouts. To get more from your routine, try some of these tips: • Break a sweat in bursts. Doing two 30-minute workouts with 20 minutes of rest in between burns more fat than exercising for a continuous 60 minutes, suggests research in the Jounral of Applied Physiology. • Get your kicks. Playing soccer two or three times a week yielded greater fat loss and muscle gain than jogging, according to a study from the University of Copenhagen. And the more muscle you have, the more fat you’ll burn. • Start hard, finish easy. Cyclists who ramped up the intensity during the first half of their workouts and slowed down for the second half torched about 23 percent more fat than those who moved from low to high intensity, research from the College of New Jersey found. • Don’t hang on for dear life. If you cling to the handrails of your stepper or elliptical, you put less stress on the larger, more powerful lower-body muscles – and burn fewer calories, says Stephen Cabral, a personal trainer and weight-loss coach in Boston. If needed, grip loosely for balance only. -Health

It’s easy to go wrong when ordering a burger at a restaurant. Lots of restaurant burgers have over 1,000 calories by themselves before you have fries or a shake. Much of that has to do with a slathering of sauces, cheese, bacon, and other burger condiments. For a better burger, try one of these:

between or among? By Brandie Bohney Current in Carmel

Having young children who have a strong grasp of language is great. Most of the time. Here’s an example of when it’s mildly frustrating: “Get your shoes on; we’re leaving in a couple of minutes.” “How many is a couple?” “Two.” “So we’re leaving in two minutes?” “Yes. Two minutes. Please put on your shoes.” “Can we have a few minutes instead of a couple?” “Why?” “Because a few is more than two, and I want to finish playing dress up.” This was my conversation with my 5-yearold daughter recently. Good times. The distinction between a couple and a few is a fairly basic one that most people understand, hence being easy for a 5-yearold to master. A similar but apparently notso-easy-to-master distinction is that of the words between and among. Simply put, between should be used only when comparing two items or groups of items:

www.currentincarmel.com

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

There is a big difference between knitting and crocheting. Mark divided the points evenly between the

Lancers and the Gladiators.

Among, on the other hand, is for use with more than two entities:

We need to arrange the flowers evenly among the fifteen vases. The alligator’s eyes were barely visible among the reeds.

The often-made error involving the two words is almost always the use of between instead of among. And I think the reason the error is made at all is people forget the word among exists. Proper usage is important, though, because use of between indicates the presence of two things only. Think about this: If someone says, “We have to divide this candy bar between us,” that could be a pretty sweet deal. But if there are actually 12 people, they’ll be pretty disappointed to learn that the split has to be made among them. And for anyone who may be wondering, among and amongst are interchangeable. Oh, and it took 17 minutes to get out the door that day. Maybe several should have been the operative word. AUCTION INSPIRATION - Lisa Fine, one half of the popular Irving & Fine http://www.irvingandfine.comfashion label, has an unorthodox style guide: She relies on Sotheby’s 2001 Villa Fiorentina auction catalogue, which features numerous furnishings made for that South-of-France house under the direction of the great American decorator Billy Baldwin. “I just show it to my upholsterer and say, ‘That’s the chair I want,’” Fine explained. “It’s a godsend. The furniture Billy Baldwin designed for his clients had such great proportions.” So start making room in your bookshelves for auction catalogues. As Fine points out, many include fairly detailed specifications. Christie’s home sales, for instance, often are rich with vintage custom-made upholstered seating by revered firms such as Guido De Angelis. Because I have always been interested in residential design and wanted to escape Wisconsin for a while, I took the opportunity to apply to Artichoke Designs, which I had heard about through a family friend. I could not have chosen a more appropriate business. The most important piece of wisdom I will take from here is customer service: The client’s wants and needs always come first. Already I have met with numerous clients either at the studio or at their homes and done some of the grunt work, which is inevitable with any internship. And now I know first hand that this comes with the territory of interior design With a taste of real-world residential design experience, I realize that I was right in my decision, almost four years ago, to tell people at my graduation party I was to be an interior designer.

TRY A TUX, LADIES - A woman in a tux or a really sharp suit for evening is one of those timeless, incredibly glamorous, confident looks that when done right is absolutely magic in a room full of skirts. The tuxedo is a classic for a reason. You want one that’s simple and true to its menswear conception but masterfully feminized to be not quite masculine, not quite feminine, just beautifully sylphlike and androgynous. Skip all pleating and any too-traditional elements — ruffles, bow ties, etc. — in favor of one with a slim, sexy fit. Skinny-leg pants gives it an extra shot of sex appeal and a modern edge. Then, pair it with a very bare shirt underneath — a silky camisole or a little low-cut chiffon blouse. You just want to show that sexy swath of bare flesh right where it counts. Keep jewelry to a minimum — diamond studs and a pretty glittery bracelet are just enough. The most important accessory always, though: high heels. The higher the better. - www.elle.com

TO BELT OR NOT TO BELT? - Like pant cuffs, belts are a personal preference for men. Slimmer suits or trousers with side tabs don’t require a belt. If you are going to wear a belt, keep it slim and tasteful for the office. And generally speaking, it’s preferable to match your belt to your shoes when dressing for business. - men.style.com

Even though we’re still enjoying the last few weeks lying by the pool with icy cold lemonade, it is not too early to start preparing our closets for fall! While picking out our fall clothing, accessories, scarves and coats we need to think of color. What are the new colors for fall and how can I make a statement this season? For fall 2009 the color combinations we will be seeing are exciting! Bring warmth to your look with camel and red brick. They are great accent colors when dressing in a nice chocolate brown or a cold stone gray. We will also be seeing a lot of golds matched up with bright peacock blue. Additionally, think of big prints, just bold enough to catch some attention. Though it might be hard to watch the summer end, it is exciting to usher in a new season full of bright, bold colors!

CENTRAL DANCE ACADEMY OPEN HOUSE - Central Indiana Academy of Dance owner Suzann DeLay would like for you to join her at Central Indiana Academy of Dance Open House Aug. 5 and 6 from 2-6 p.m. There will be registration for all classes, and there are specialized children’s programs that begin at 2 ½ years. Location is 14950 Greyhound Court #4, Carmel. (317-581-2423). Also, save the date for open auditions for Central Indiana Dance Ensemble’s 10th anniversary full-length performance of “The Nutcracker.”

Local watercolorist Rodney Reveal finds his artistic inspirations as far as Arizona and as close as his own backyard. When he isn’t traveling the country photographing inspiring landscapes for future works, the retired Noblesville firefighter and his wife work to rehabilitate wildlife animals from their Arcadia home. “We always have something around that we’re raising,” Reveal said. “When you do that, you have a connection, and we always photograph the daylights out of them. “They become the subjects of a lot of paintings.” Other subjects include landscapes and detailed depictions of places from his time growing up in Noblesville. From an old skating rink to a drive-in ice cream shop, Reveal said he tries to pick one place every year to feature in a painting. “One guy who buys them says I’m ‘selling memories,’”

MUSIC THAT TORTURES (LITERALLY) - If you’re looking for music to drive people away from your next party (or just make them tell you things they don’t want to tell you), these tunes just might do the trick. They’ve been used by military and law-enforcement personnel to influence suspects to talk: 1. Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” (used at Guantanamo Bay) 2. Christina Aguilera’s “Dirrty” (Guantanamo Bay) 3. Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Were Made for Walking” (FBI standoff with David Koresh) - online.wsj.com

Reveal said. “People come up to me and say, ‘My husband proposed to me there,’ or ‘I met my girlfriend there.’ There’s always a story.” Reveal has his art featured in several galleries across the state, and works out of the Hamilton County Arts Center, home to the Hamilton County Artists’ Association. The non-profit organization teaches art classes for people of all ages and features about 65 local artists. Reveal teaches a watercolor class as part of his involvement with the association. The month of August, however, is Reveal’s time to shine. Reveal’s work is featured this month on the Carmel Clay Public Library’s Art Wall. Between 20-30 pieces are on display for sale on the wall next to the children’s section at the library. Reveal’s artwork has graced the wall in previous years, which he said has helped him sell paintings and make connections with possible future patrons. Becky Bryenton, director of the library Art Wall, said the wall is beneficial for both the artists and the library. “Many times we give people who have never sold or shown their art an opportunity to do so on the Art Wall,” Bryenton said. The library claims 30 percent of all sales made off the Art Wall. The money goes toward library programming.

playing it safe?

ll people get stereotyped. For example, actors that do well sometimes cannot shake the role they have created to transform into another. They are remembered for the role they excelled at. Chefs can have the same issue. We get so comfortable; why mess with success? I had hoped to be different. I continuously learn and experiment with new foods, techniques and base cuisines. Chef Michael Throughout my Vlasich career, I have Culinary Explorer shaken off the rust and polished the new. Recently, I caught myself in this exact situation. Although cute on the surface, it provoked deep thoughts and inspired me to search and experiment even harder. Twenty years ago I was a chef in Los Angeles at a beautiful high-profile hotel on the beach in Santa Monica. Many movie stars, dignitaries, music celebrities and government officials would stay there for the ambiance and food (at least that’s what I choose to believe). One Sunday afternoon, I came home from a long day. My wife, in her final trimester of carrying our first child, asked me to make her something to eat. She was famished and stressed from the tribulations of pregnancy. I searched the entire kitchen and found some chicken, fresh asparagus, dry angel hair, breadcrumbs and canned mandarin oranges. I proceeded to create “pan-seared chicken and asparagus over angel hair with mandarin orange cream.” My wife immediately proclaimed it to be the best thing I had ever cooked. Placing credibility on her statement, as I do for everything my wife proclaims, I decided to run it as a special the next day. There it had the same results. Long story short; it became a permanent menu item. Since then, over the course of my career, it has been on menus at every property and has been the best selling dish at all three

PAN-SEARED CHICKEN AND ASPARAGUS OVER ANGEL HAIR WITH MANDARIN ORANGE CREAM • 4 each chicken breasts crusted in parmesan basil breading • 3 tbsp. olive oil blend • ¾ # cooked angel hair (4 portions) • 1 bunch of asparagus blanched • 1 tbsp. minced Shallots • 1 cup white wine • 3 cans mandarin oranges (drained) • 1 pint heavy cream • 1 cup shredded parmesan In a sauce pot, place the shallots and white wine, reduce by 2/3’s. Add the cream and reduce until sauce consistency. Add two cans of mandarin oranges into the cream sauce and 2/3 of the parmesan cheese, blending until sauce consistency. Once the sauce is almost finished, heat a sauté pan, add oil and then cook chicken breasts until finished. Heat the pasta and asparagus. Place on the plate, pour ½ the sauce over pasta, place the chicken on top, pour remaining sauce, place remaining oranges over chicken as a garnish and then sprinkle parmesan cheese. Enjoy!

hotels. My wife even requested it for her birthday dinner this year. From time to time, I tell the story of this dish, with all the staff suspecting it is another of the funny pranks that I am known to play. But, here’s where it gets funny. Over spring break this year, we went to LA, and visited my old hotel. While there, we ran into a waitress I had worked with. We began to reminisce of 20 years ago, when she said, “Chef we miss you, but really we miss that chicken dish with the mandarin oranges.” Do I really play it so safe? Will I only be remembered for a simple chicken dish after I am gone? Hopefully not. There’s more to life than cooking; or is there? Chef Michael R. Finding Nouf

By Zoe Ferraris When a young woman from a wealthy Saudi family disappears from their compound in Jeddah, the family hires Nayir, a Palestinian desert guide, to search for her. Nayir tests the boundaries of his religion and culture as he works with Katya, a female employee of the coroner’s office. Together they strive to solve the mystery of Nouf ’s disappearance. Readers catch a glimpse into the lives of contemporary Middle-Eastern women in this enthralling first mystery. Creating seasonaility in outdoor spaces

H

ave you considered the seasonality of our homes and how we migrate between living spaces? Most spaces’ seasonal tenure is somewhat obvious. We certainly enjoy our outdoor patios, decks and fire pits more frequently in favorable weather. But some outdoor spaces are extendable and can still be pretty compelling in the winter months. Friends in Wabash have a stunning backyard space somewhat secluded from harsh elements. Their patios are protected by heavy woods and an ambitiously sized fireplace with massive storage area walls on the side. All of that serves to create a cocoon affect where the heat of the fire and a few stainless steel heating elements create a comRandy fortable area to converse, even on Sorrell mild winter days.

LANAIS

Outdoor lanais structures, like the feature photo, offer a bit of winter protection as well, especially with their creative modular heating mechanisms that multi-task as subtle water elements too. The ceiling helps trap the warmth and keep it localized for visitors to appreciate. Fashionable patio furniture with oversized cushions is very inviting year round and offers a splash of color. This Carmel project lasted six weeks, including the synthetic Azek deck, storage steps and bluestone patio expansion. Grill kitchens are a blatant fair-weather activity center, but accumulate winter attention too. The grill creates heat

as cigar toting men test Bobby Flays recent “throw-down” inspirations. Counter space is prime real estate to hang out when entertaining and also serves as a great food and refreshment station. What causes us to naturally congregate in these areas? Savvy home builders and remodelers have tuned into this thought process and are designing seasonally centered spaces. Fall may focus on a warmly outfitted library with a fireplace and large windows to allow the warmth of the sun to percolate in. Finished lower levels naturally call us in January and February when we are desperate to escape dreary outside environments. Cable TV is almost a necessity as we hungrily consume action-packed flicks to kick in our adrenaline. Spring filled kitchens finally open to outdoor patios in May and June. And the process repeats itself perennially. Do you migrate between living spaces? How can you improve those areas to completely maximize that process? Home – it’s all about the memories. grow the juciest melons ever Watering and Care Melons need plenty of water while they are young, and regular deep watering is especially crucial during the first 3-4 weeks that the vines are growing in your garden. That said, you can improve the flavor of the fruit if you don’t water as often as the fruit ripens. A good technique is to cut back on the water once the plants have begun to set fruit because overwatering dilutes the melon’s sugars and makes the flavor weaker and less sweet. This is a fine line, because you never want the melons to dry out completely, or get too stressed for water, because when you do water again, or it rains, the ripening melons can split. To give a steady supply of moisture, drip irrigation or soaker hoses are the best way, because you are watering the roots directly rather than soaking the leaves. Harvesting Melons can be hard to tell if they are ripe, but here are some common techniques. Watermelons: When ripe, the curled tendril at the stem end dries to brown and the underside of the melon turns yellow or cream-colored. The melon will also give a flat, dead sound when thumped. Rinds of unripe watermelons have a nice shiny gloss; ripe melons lose that shine, so the rinds are drab. www.weekendgardener.net

SCREEN DOORS PERFECT FOR PILLING - Anyone who has ever tried to pill a cat knows that it’s not an easy task. Some people have success with pill guns, and others can pry their cat’s jaws open without injury, but many cannot. Another interesting method is the screen door method: it’s simple and ingenious, though likely to shorten the life of your screen doors. Lift the cat onto the screen, where the animal naturally reaches out and digs in claws. Once “hung” from the door by his own claws, the cat is in no position to fight, and pilling is fast and easy. - www.veterinarypartner.com

If you’re fishing for a way to add an ocean view to your home or office that will excite guests and patrons alike, then look no further than a simple aquarium. A number of choices are available to those in search of a decorative aquarium. Glass aquariums with black, oak or walnut trim come in a variety of shapes – bow, corner, hexagon and rectangular – as well as sizes – 10-gallon up to 180-gallon. Most aquariums require stands that can support the weight of the water they hold. As a general rule, one gallon of water weighs eight pounds, therefore a sturdy floor or foundation is needed to support the aquarium. Like the tanks that sit on them, aquarium stands are decorative, too, and styled to meet many tastes. Stands come in contemporary black and oak-and-walnut wood grain finished. Stands made to complement the aquariums are available too. Brooke is a 1-year-old female red with white markings hound/ boxer mix. Brooke is a very energetic and playful girl who loves her doggie biscuits. Since she is food-motivated she should do very well in obedience training – she already knows the command “sit” and she is learning “down.” Brooke arrived at the shelter when a concerned citizen found her wandering near a busy highway and brought her to us for safe keeping. Brooke is spayed, outgoing and good natured.

UNDERWATER SECRETS While aesthetic appeal may be an aquarium purchaser’s first and only attraction, customers often are pleasantly surprised when the find what else they have added to their homes and offices. An aquarium in the home can be a

Mariah is a 2-year-old female gray and white tabby DSH. Mariah is a special little girl – she is a polydactyl, which means she has extra toes. She is also a bit of a shy girl and though she loves attention, she needs a little time to warm up to someone new. Please keep this in mind when visiting with her, but once she is in a home environment she will come around and show her loving personality. family project, one in which children can learn responsibility and an appreciation for pets while caring for their aquatic friends. In an office environment, an aquarium can soothe those who spend time watching. The mere act of decorating an aquarium is therapeutic to some. Aquascaping, as fish hobbyists call it, involves selecting plants, rocks and decorations to create natural-looking niches for aquarium fish. Hobbyists need to select pet-safe decorations, as some natural rocks, for instance, emit minerals that can be toxic to aquarium fish. And seashells from the ocean should never be added to a home aquarium. An undecorated tank can be very stressful to aquarium fish as they compete for food, space and hiding places. PREVENT PARROT SCREAMING Parrots use vocalizations as warnings and as ways to find the rest of the flock when separated from it. Screaming can often be prevented from starting by simply answering the parrot when she calls to you, and letting the bird know when you are leaving and have returned. Short daily training sessions should begin ideally from the first day the bird is brought home. Parrots respond to facial expressions and verbal praise. This type of positive reinforcement should be used when an appropriate response is given by the bird and no response should be given for incorrect responses. No aggression or punishment is involved in the training. - www.peteducation.com

BRIDGE THE GAP

HOOSIER HODGEPODGE

CARMELKU

Use logic to fill in the boxes so every row, column and 2 x 3 box contains the letters C-A-R-M-E-L. Answer below.

Answers to BRIDGE THE GAP: BAND, TURKEY, DOG, PARK, JACK, KEY, HARRY, MUSHROOM, CHEF, CLARK

I

’m a worrier. I am pretty sure this is a genetic thing. If your parents were worriers, you will be, too. But don’t worry about it. I’m getting ready for a summer vacation right now, so I’m worried about whether the plane will be on time, if I’m going to get seasick on the ship, and if my beagle will get along with that nasty little Rottweiler at Doggie Daycare. When I was a kid in New York, my parents worried about everything. Dick Wolfsie Worrying was a part Humor of life. My mother used to fear that she’d get mugged in Central Park. We lived 40 minutes from Central Park. Mom had never been in Central Park. Had no plans of ever walking in Central Park. No matter. Central Park was a good thing to worry about. My wife is not a worrier. This concerns me. I have tried to get her to worry, but she won’t cooperate. “Mary Ellen, I have a burning sensation across my chest when I exercise.” “You need a better pair of sneakers.” “Mary Ellen, I smell gas leaking from our stove.” “Go out and get some fresh air.” “Mary Ellen, my brother hasn’t answered his phone for a week.” “He knows it’s you.” I wish I could be more like my wife. In fact, my next New Year’s resolution is going to be to obsess less about things I can’t control. If you can’t do anything about something, then there’s no point in worrying. WAIT a second! Those are exactly the kind of things I should worry about. If I agonize over things I can do something about, I’ll be a wreck trying to decide what action to take. But if I worry about things I have absolutely no control over, then I can just sit back without having to lift a finger. Gee, I wish I had thought about that before I needlessly stopped worrying about Y2K. I’m losing you, aren’t I? I’m not going to let that stress me out. Do you know why? Because I could have done something about that. I could have made that last paragraph clearer, explained myself better. Do you have any idea how much anxiety is caused by worrying about something you can actually do something about? I should be apprehensive about my retirement account, for example, because I feel I obligated to do some research, move my money around. It’s that pressure that’s putting me over the edge.

What, me worry?

No, instead I think I’ll worry about when the next tornado will be; if we’ll ever pay for Lucas Oil Stadium; if an asteroid will hit my house; if there will be Y3K problems; if leisure suits will come back. I’m going to fret about all those things. I may even lose some sleep over them. But one thing is certain: No matter how much I dwell on these matters, there’s not a

single thing I can do about changing anything. That takes off a lot of pressure. Right now, some of my readers have given up on this column and have gone on to scan the obituaries. I can’t do a darn thing about that. So I think I’ll worry about it. I feel better already. What’s that? You’ve re-read this column five times and you’re still lost? You have no

idea what I’m talking about? You’re experiencing anxiety because you’re still totally confused? You can’t do anything about this and you’re worried? That’s the spirit! Dick Wolfsie is an author, columnist, and speaker. Contact him at wolfsie@aol.com.

through the rigamarole with the cops and the insurance guys, and I’m calling THEM the fools.) Most of the time, I figure whoever takes my stuff is taking it to convert into something they really need, such as drugs, although I have to wonder how high you can get with the proceeds from things that have been liberated from my possession in the past: garbage cans (really!), extremely pliable plastic lawn furniture that I was planning to throw away, an ashtray, a lantern and a truck radio. I’m not seeing a lot of money-making opportunity there. Well, maybe the radio. And who knows? Maybe there’s an ashtray collector out there who paid big money for mine, which I myself liberated from a motel in Cocoa Beach, Fla., on spring break in 1971 This latest case may be different, though, because they took the power cord as well as the mower and drill. Maybe this indicates they will be used instead of fenced. In that case, I would ask you all to be on the lookout for itinerants asking to mow your lawns the new-fangled electric way, or if you have anything that might need to have a hole drilled into it. If you see them, call the cops, and then grab hold of that extension cord. I already got a replacement mower and drill, but I forgot to get a new cord, and my grass is getting kind of tall.

LAUGHS

nce again I find myself at odds with one or more of my fellow citizens over a concept I like to call “the private ownership of movable property.” Simply put, I am in favor of it, and by the look of things, quite a few of my neighbors are not, as they chose to remind me the other day. This time, my personal holdings have been reduced by one electric lawnmower, one power drill, and one Mike Redmond 100-foot extension Humor cord on a reel. The lawnmower and drill were fairly new – in fact, I think I used the drill all of twice. The extension cord was old. And wouldn’t you know it, that’s the one that upset me the most. We had a lot of good times together, that cord and I. But I digress. These items used to be stored in my garage, which I have come to find developed an inexplicable glitch in one of its doors Friday night. That glitch caused someone (not me, and I won’t name names, either, because this person feels bad enough already) to think the door had closed when it had not. In fact, it just went down to the bottom of the track and then rebounded back into the open position. At any rate, the open door was more than enough invitation for person or persons unknown to come in and help themselves to my mower and drill. What’s kind of funny is what these persons (In my mind’s eye, I see persons, so I’ll go with that) passed up to get there: a freezer full of food, power tools worth far more than the drill, motorcycle saddles worth as much as the drill and mower combined, a motorcycle to go with them, and so on. The fools. (That’s rich. I’m the one with the garage door that pops open, I’m the one who lost his stuff, I’m the one who has to go
