SWEET MUSIC By Zach Dunkin Current in Carmel
It isn’t that Blair Clark was one of those take-it-all-and give-nothing-back kind of guys. It’s just that he was like a lot of us. Indifferent. You know, the type who drives by someone with car trouble on the highway? That someone who looks the other way when a street person asks for meal money. Or worse yet tells them to “get a job.” “I guess you’d say I was more like a couch potato when it came to giving help,” said Clark. “I didn’t care that much about others.” It’s amazing what the loss of a father to Alzheimer’s and a sister to cancer can do to a man’s heart and his outlook on life. Clark’s father Albert, a folk singer and a carpenter, died at the age of 72. His sister, LaNiece, was 50 when she died in his arms in 2004. “My dad was like a brother to me, and my sister was my best friend,” said Clark. “On the day my sister died, I realized how short life can be. It was time to start giving back. My dad always told me to leave the world a better place than when you found it. And that’s what I am going to do.” Clark, who moved to Carmel 24 years ago, lives a few blocks south of the Arts & Design District with his 18-year-old daughter Erica and 8-year-old son Blair Jr. “Carmel is a great place to live,” said Clark, who born and reared in Lansing, Mich. “I love it here. It’s a great arts community, and I think a lot of people don’t understand what Carmel is all about.” While performing public and private gigs (including The Governor’s Ball for Gov. Mitch Daniels) with his band Blair and Company, Clark has become part of the community fabric as a vocal and performance coach for more than seven years at the Performing Arts Center of Carmel. He has worked with students of all ages and talent levels, including Susan Guilke, the 2006 Miss Indiana. But let’s roll back in time when most of the pleasure Clark was getting out of life came from the alluring lifestyle on the road as an entertainer. A different town every night. A different hotel. A different club. A different casino. A different temptation. “You know the old line about sex, drugs, rock and roll,”
charitible efforts Clark will roll a portion of the sales of the CD into a community charity other than his own “Friends Helping Friends.” “Friends Helping Friends” includes three arms. Voices of Carmel is volunteer vocal group that performs in the community, including retirement homes. The LaNiece Clark Memorial Fund aids community residents who have suffered from losses such as in home fires or natural disasters. The third arm is a recovery program for those suffering from substance abuse and emotional actions such as intentional cutting. “Music is important to me, and helping others is important to me,” said Clark. “I’m dedicating my life to doing both, because I can do both. You don’t have to be like Mother Teresa and give it all away, but a person can have a music career and be a giver and not a taker.”

THE PRESIDENT IS NOT STUPID Editor: I take exception to your Aug. 4 editorial titled “President ‘Acted Stupidly.’” First of all, you did not state the facts of the incident. Prof. Gates, who was returning from a 15hour flight, did not “forget his keys.” The front door to his home was jammed, and he was unable to open it. Instead, he went to the back of the house and entered, with his keys, through a back door. He then walked through the house and attempted to get the jammed door open from the inside. When the police arrived, Gates provided Officer Crowley with his driver’s license, which showed that he was in his own home. Both Crowley and Gates may have over-
reacted to the situation. I’m sure if you returned home after a 15-hour flight and were confronted not only with the door problems, but the confrontation of a police officer who refused to believe you were in your own home, you would probably not act in an entirely rational matter either. I also believe Pres. Obama probably did not choose his words wisely. However, for you to call the president stupid is itself stupid. Obama did not call Officer Crowley stupid. He said he thought the police ACTED stupidly. Unlike your statement, that is not a personal attack on an individual. Dr. William H. Frye Carmel
LEAVE PALIN ALONE Editor: In the Aug. 4 editorial, “The Public Trust,” your editorial board criticized Sarah Palin for resigning. I have to disagree. Sarah Palin was hated by the media in 2008. If you just turned on your TV, you were bound to find a station running malicious things about her. I wonder if your editorial board had ever considered that she just want the media to stop indoctrinating the public with lies about her and her family. On every little gaffe, Palin was ripped by
the major media, while her opponent probably could get away with saying anything in the world. Barack Obama said he had traveled to 57 states. Think about the last time you heard about that in the media. Our current American media is possibly the greatest threat to liberty. If they continue to indoctrinate the people with their biases, expect resignations like Palin’s to occur more often. Luke McQuillen Westfield
FROM THE BACKSHOP OUT OF THE GROUND WILL RISE A MAGNET There’s a massive hole on the north side of West Main Street in the Arts & Design District that is about to fill a void. A conflicting thought, you believe? Not true. The Carmel Arts District Lofts and Shoppes, the “working” title, later this year should be rising out of the crater that is being transformed into a 450-plus FREE parking garage. It’s the work of Keystone Construction, owned by Carmel resident Ersal Ozdemir, and the promise it holds for our district is terrifically energizing. The $60-million project will be a five-story structure with retail down and residences up. It will have green space and will be the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified midrise structure in the state of Indiana. Ozdemir told us the 430,000 square-foot edifice will resemble French architecture and already has its first signature retail tenant, Anytime Fitness. The club will occupy approximately 6,000 square feet on the ground floor. There is space planned for a 5,000 to 6,000 square-foot restaurant and additional premium space for a high-end jeweler, which Ozdemir hopes to attract. Look for national “names” to appear on the list of retail tenants. The area has been the target
Brian Kelly & Steve Greenberg of much criticism lately, and some of that has come from its owners and tenants. People wonder why there are vacant storefronts. Ozdemir doesn’t build and walk away. No build-and-run guy, Ozdemir and his team will be intimately involved in the success of the Lofts and Shoppes. We believe that will translate nicely into the kind of magnetism the district needs to help fill the other vacancies. ••• Once more with feeling: Our requester program is gaining considerable steam, and, again, we’re incredibly grateful to those of you who’ve returned the cards we sent out last month or have completed the online card at www.currentincarmel.com. Mayor Jim Brainard announced last week the appointment of Steven Libman as the first Executive Director of the Regional Performing Arts Center. Libman, 49, is currently the managing director for La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego. He joins Michael Feinstein, the newly appointed artistic director for the center. The grand opening of the center was scheduled for fall 2010, but the construction has encountered problems that could push back the opening. Brainard would not comment on construction progress at the meeting, citing a city policy to address the issue only in writing. The announcement of Libman’s appointment came amidst concerns of the ethicalities of a government’s involvement with non-profit organizations. Brainard is the secretary and director of the Performing Arts Foundation, which is set to run the center once it opens. At the press conference last week, Brainard assured the crowd and media that the long-term goal is for the facility to be selfsustaining, free of government influence and taxpayer money. Brainard described his role in the foundation as a “placeholder” for future leaders of the project, and said taxpayer money given to the center was “seed money” to be used to

CITY SET TO HIRE SEVEN NEW COPS By Kim Puckett Current in Carmel
Although the Carmel City Council included salaries for seven new police officers in this year’s budget, none have been hired. But moves have been made to expand the force, Police Chief Mike Fogarty said. The hiring was set back from its original June date to a now tentative September timeframe because the city applied for federal stimulus funding through the COPS Hiring Recovery Program. The city was not approved for the stimulus funds, but will still hire seven officers because the money was already budgeted, Fogarty said. City Council approved funding for these officers to cover the southwest annexation to the city set to take place next summer. “We (the council) funded them because the mayor and the police chief said we needed them for coverage,” Councilman John Acceturo said. Acceturo also said the council looks forward to hiring the officers as soon as possible, because it takes at least a year to train them. “We anticipate hiring four officers on or about Sept. 1, and then the other 3,” Fogarty said. “We haven’t got a definitive date, but it will be the latter part of this year.” The Carmel Clay Police Department started out with a pool of 125 applicants for the seven openings, and as of last week the candidates had been whittled to about 15, Fogarty said. “We are right in the middle of our applicant process,” he said. “In the next couple of weeks, we will be administering candidates polygraphs and psychological testing.”

a refresher on hyphens By Brandie Bohney Current in Carmel
Yesterday, I attended a meeting that included a Power Point presentation. The presentation was informative and important, but as is so often the case with me, I was distracted by some grammatical errors. The worst offense in the presentation, aside from a goofy typo, was superfluous hyphen use. I wrote a column a while back that explained how to use hyphen in multi-word adjectives that precede the words they modify. In case you missed that column or need a refresher, here are a couple of examples: My spaced-out uncle forgot the family reunion again. The modeling agency was filled with longlegged women.
I mentioned also in that column that adjective phrases that follow the word or words they modify should not be hyphenated. I should have also mentioned that if the word sequence doesn’t function as an adjective at all, it also doesn’t require hyphens. In the presentation I watched, the writer of the slides had hyphenated filled in and signed up. Now, either of those combinations could – somewhat awkwardly – function as adjective phrases:

leader. Signed-up members may proceed directly to the meeting.
In this case, however, neither was used in such a way. They were used more like this:
Please make sure your application is filled-in completely before submitting it. If you are already signed-up for a team, you may proceed to the field.
Do you see the difference? In the latter examples, the verb component is, well, part of a verb phrase. The words following those verbs – in and up – are prepositions. It is important to note here that the writer of the presentation was a very welleducated individual. The error in question wasn’t made because of grandiose ignorance. Instead, it was probably the misinterpretation of an easily confused rule about hyphens. That said, here’s my advice: If you aren’t positive that the phrase you’re considering hyphenating functions as an adjective and precedes the word it modifies, leave the hyphen out. In this case, it’s better to drop the hyphen entirely than use it erroneously. he beginning of a new school year is also the chance to wipe the school slate clean and start fresh. This is one of those transitions where every kid makes new choices. This is one of those transitions where we parents can also make new choices for our kids – especially when it comes to homework. The primary objective on the part of us parents is to create a household environment allowing our kids to Becky Kapsalis be self-motivated. Ask YiaYia Giving our kids credit for caring enough about themselves to care enough about doing their homework on their own will begin the self-motivated process. Here are some suggestions that might help you get your kids to take responsibility for getting the job done: 1. winding time. They choose the time of day they want to do the homework. Create a non-distracting environment. Be available to research questions with them, but be firm in not doing the work for them. Allow no more than two hours of homework time before they close the books. If they haven’t finished their work in two hours, it’s certain they’re not going to finish their homework, no matter how much time you give them. Our job is to keep our kids mentally and physically healthy. Kids need their sleep and as little stress about school as possible. Open-ended homework time breeds both lack of sleep and lots of stress.
Finally, enabling is disabling; self- accountability is self-motivating. Ask the kids how they want to handle their homework. Giving guidelines and choices teaches them to be self-motivated. Homework is but a miniscule part of their whole wellbeing. Keep it in perspective, and try not to measure their capabilities on whether or not they get their homework done. Hugs! chewing orange juice
was having breakfast with my good friend Matt the other day, and he ordered a glass of orange juice. When it arrived, he took a big drink and realized it was thick with pulp. He was expecting typical Indiana restaurant watery orange juice. We had a good chuckle and I suggested that he drink his water and chew the orange juice. Matt’s breakfast experience is a lot like life in general. How often does reality not meet our expectations? We Kent Burns embark on On Success a simple project, only to realize that it will take twice – or three times – as long to finish. We hope to have a quick discussion with someone, and it morphs into a headache-inducing interaction. We think we have enough money to retire, and the market suddenly tells us we don’t. Back to the orange juice. Matt adjusted his expectations and enjoyed his beverage. Orange juice with
pulp is more substantial, more authentic and more flavorful than the watery kind. Consequently, the whole experience ended up being richer than the one he was originally expecting. Are you willing to consider that the circumstances you now face will lead you to an experience richer that the one you were expecting? What if it’s just pulp? Pulp isn’t bad; it’s just different. Your response is to slow down and chew your way through, instead of mindlessly gulping with no regard for the substance, authenticity and flavor of the experience. In fact, it may just be a different way to enjoy the journey that you are on. Maybe your journey tastes more like sour, pulp-laden lemonade. In that case, keep chewing, focus on all the vitamin C that you are getting and rejoice in the fact you won’t get scurvy. Chewing orange juice. To help your guy stay on top of his game, send him in to Ernst Buckingham, our experienced barber who can trim up that hair and give a relaxing hot lather razor shave as well. DISPATCHES PROTECT YOUR HAIR - Before swimming, comb your regular sunscreen through your strands; this forms a barrier that prevents chlorine and salt water from stripping your color and drying out hair, explains LA hairstylist Jessica Galvan. -www.prevention.com ACETONE OR NO? – Most nail-polish removers are available in one of two formulas: acetone or acetone-free. Is the bottle without the solvent gentler? Not necessarily, says Francesca Fusco, a dermatologist in New York City. Although acetone may dry out nails when used excessively, it’s still the most effective polish-removing ingredient. Acetonefree formulas may be gentler, but they’re still irritating because they work more slowly and require more rubbing. Choosing an acetone remover that also contains aloe vera will help counteract the drying effects. -Martha Stewart Living

HEART ATTACK INDICATOR – The ratio of your waist to hip measurements offers the best predictor of your heart attack risk, say researchers with Interheart study.
From information on more than 27,000 people from 52 countries, they found that the higher your waist measurement relative to your hip measurement, the greater your heart attack risk, even if you’re not overweight. A ratio of 85% or less is optimal for women; 90% or less for men. -Environmental Nutrition
TUNA YOU CAN TRUST – Not all canned tunas are created equal. The fish have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, and ar caught young, before they’ve had the chance to accumulate the mercury found in older, larger tuna. ‘jazz and jokes’ set the stage at local comedy club By Jennifer Pignolet Current in Carmel
In a time when extraneous spending on entertainment is limited for many Americans, Eric Shorts, owner of Morty’s Comedy Joint on 96th Street, is working to spread the word about stand-up comedy. “Stand-up comedy is a high-quality entertainment for the dollar,” Shorts said. “I want to present the very best product that I can for the people of Indiana.” That product includes a 100 percent smoke-free environment and a weekly Thursday Jazz and Jokes night, featuring a local Jazz ensemble and complementing comedy act. “There are only two unique American art forms that were created right here in the United States, and that’s jazz and stand-up comedy,” Shorts said. “So it makes for a great combination. It’s my favorite show of the week.” The show begins with jazz from 7-8:45 p.m. With a quick stage transformation, the stand-up artist takes over from 9-10:30. Each ticket, $9 in advance or $10 at the door, covers both acts. Several major comedy headliners, like Robert Kline and Jeff Ross, have graced the stage at Morty’s. Although the club celebrated just its third birthday last week, HBO has already named the club one of

the top 40 comedy clubs in the country. The Jazz and Jokes nights at Morty’s began in March 2008. Shorts partnered with a local jazz radio station to promote the events, and soon more than 200 people packed into the New York-style seating room at Morty’s each Thursday night. When the jazz station went off the air a few months later, attendance suffered, Shorts said. The show was cancelled until two months ago after more and more comments came in asking to bring back the show. Thanks to a new partnership with local recording label Owl Studios, Shorts said the return of Jazz and Jokes has been successful. wo weeks ago, I told the little ditty about my complex with a chicken legacy. With all the things I have done in this life, I am only remembered for some crusty, parasite magnet and worm-invading citrus super food. With that, back to education, to regurgitate some knowledge from a chef ’s experience of 30 years of toil, sweat, and dexterous magic. In that feature, I used mandarin oranges as a key inChef Michael gredient; however, Vlasich I did not expand Culinary Explorer upon the history, background or trivial facts. These oranges are perfect for salads, desserts, and savory dishes like the one I had mentioned. You might have eaten one fresh with out even knowing, as the term “mandarin orange” applies to an entire group of citrus fruit. Botanically it is “Citrus reticulate,” which encompasses many varieties of mandarin oranges like
tangerines, Clementine, Satsuma, and so on. Mostly, they are consistently the sweetest of the citrus orange family, having a bright orange skin that is always easy to peel, along with segments that can be taken apart with ease. Often chefs and grocers use mandarin oranges and tangerines interchangeably, but not all tangerines qualify as types of mandarin oranges. Mandarin oranges derived their name via the mandarin robes (bright orange robes) worn by the mandarins who were public officials in the ancient Chinese court’s hierarchy. These fruits were often reserved for the privileged class of the Far East orient, who were all a part of this upper society. Records in these courts show the oranges were cultivated and consumed for more than 3,000 years; however, they were not exported to Europe or North America until the 1800s. For nutrition, they give you a good bang for the buck, as a lot of nutritionists’ taglines say, ”You should eat five servings of fruit and vegetables a day, like mandarin oranges.” Look at the fast food giants: Most offer them as a substitute for French fries or chips. In fact, they are low in saturated fat, have no cholesterol, are very low in sodium, have high amounts of Vitamins A and C, and for those of you concerned with your

BOOK REVIEW Eat Right, Now!
By Wendell Fowler Chef Wendell Fowler, a local chef, has written a new book entitled “Eat Right, Now!” This book combines dietary instruction, lifestyle advice and recipes in what he refers to as a “holy temple maintenance guide.” The first half of the book encourages the reader to abandon the conventional American diet with an eye toward wholesome, sustainable nutrition, preferably by adopting a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. Shock and awe reports about the food industry, links between food and health, and anecdotes from his experience in the hospitality industry support his points. This book is a quick read with a tone of both outrage and humor, and Chef Wendell’s strong personality shines throughout. Chef Wendell devotes the second half of the book to healthful recipes for all occasions. The majority of the recipes included adhere to the vegetarian or vegan diet he promotes, though a few do contain chicken broth or lean cuts of meat. Simple directions, a conversational tone, and occasional anecdotes encourage the reader to give these healthful recipes a try.

Students returning to Mohawk Trails Elementary School came back to an enhanced physical education and play area behind the school. Through a program they called Operation Green Space, the Mohawk Trails PTO worked in conjunction with the school corporation to install a new fitness track with fitness stations at
each of the four corners and a soccer field in the center. Kristin Crawford, the current PTO president, said, “Mohawk has been around since 1972, and we haven’t had a lot of upgrades to the playground area, and we have such a nice green space in the back that we were looking to add something that could be used not only by our gym classes, but also by the community.”

just another day in paradise
his is another fantastic outdoor living space for another wonderful Carmel family! Four labor intensive, sweaty weeks resulted in excess of 1,000 square feet of very livable patio space, a unique gas-inspired fire pit and a cultured stone grill storage center. The scattered seat walls serve as a compact seating solution as well as a sense of boundary. Subtle landscape touches, romantic night lighting and Randy a “rockin’” outdoor Sorrell stereo system complete the space. A tumbled warm sandstone brick paver was selected for the body of the patios. The heavily textured cabernet border paver calls attention to its modular shape, adds excitement and complements tones from the house brick. Developing easily flowing, multiple living areas with several sets of patio furniture were critical for this busy family with continual guests. Fire pits of some sort continue to be in demand, and I can understand why after personally experiencing the impromptu
joy they stimulate. Even when not in use, they serve as a place to congregate. WARNING: Lighting a fire is considered an invitation to party. This fire element repeats the seat wall stone and textured border paver and is completely natural gas (no wood). Burnt orange flames eerily creep through the natural rock and warm those around. Perhaps my favorite element is the grill kitchen/storage station with cultured stone sides, gigabytes of stainless steel bling, a seat wall that sort of “eats” into the back wall for intrigue, and a glazed full-color Pennsylvania Blue Stone counter. The irregular shaped mortared counter stone is dramatically contrasted by the maturing
red Japanese maple gently arching overhead. Very nice. I am imagining that loads of great memories will be cherished on these patios, with kids gathered around the fire pit in mass and dad grilling up some of their favorites. t doesn’t hurt that the grill area overlooks a gorgeous pool – and it doesn’t get any better than this. Just another day in paradise. Thanks for the privilege. Randy Sorrell is president of SURROUNDINGS by NatureWorks+, a Carmel home improvement firm. It’s hard to imagine going your whole life and never visiting a dentist; the results could be detrimental and could lead to problems including gum disease and cavities. The same applies to pets. Our furry friends need routine dental care to keep their pearly whites in tip-top shape. Petland stores nationwide, including Petland of Carmel, are recognizing National Pet Dental Health Month this February by offering tips and advice on pet dental health and overall hygiene. “Proper dental hygiene is equally as important for our pets as it is for us,” said Juan Lopez, Petland Carmel owner. “While we typically brush our teeth twice a day, we tend to ignore the
Jack is a 2-year-old male yellow husky/ golden retriever mix. Jack is an energetic boy who doesn’t really understand why he is at the shelter. He was adopted when he was a puppy and lived with a family, where he was a happy boy. After the arrival of a new puppy, Jack began displaying behavior issues. While he played well with the puppy, he was becoming protective of people and things. With a new baby on the way, the family decided to return Jack over. He is neutered and would love to find a home with teenage children.
Joshua is a 5-year-old male tabby DLH. Joshua is a laid-back guy who enjoys human companionship. He is good with other cats, and he is neutered. Joshua arrived at the shelter in mid-March when his family no longer wanted him. Joshua loves to hang out on the window sill, where he can watch the goings on and feel the warmth of the sun; this is very relaxing for him. oral hygiene of our pets. At Petland, we’re committed to offering advice to our customers on all aspects of their pets’ health.” According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, roughly 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats display indications of oral disease by age three, which can result in bad breath, tooth loss, and receding gums. Serious infections caused by oral disease also can enter a pet’s bloodstream, causing potential issues of the heart, kidneys and liver. Lopez recommends pet owners adhere to the following tips on a regular basis to ensure proper dental health for their pets: Look for signs of tooth decay and oral disease by routinely inspecting your pets’
teeth. Bad breath, discoloration and tartar are all indications of problems that could lead to serious health risks, with the potential for not only damaging teeth and gums, but internal organs as well. Brush your pets’ teeth daily or at least weekly. Toothpaste made for people should not be used for pets. Your veterinarian can recommend proper pet-safe toothpaste. Feed your dog or cat crunchy food. The abrasive texture of hard food can help keep teeth clean, while soft food can cling to your pets’ teeth and lead to decay. Also consider crunchy treats, which help clean pets’ teeth. Chew toys for dogs and chewable rope toys for cats are not only immensely entertaining for your pets, but also keep their teeth clean and breath smelling fresh. Article courtesy of Petland, Carmel. DISPATCH ADOPTING FROM A SHELTER - It may be overwhelming to see the number of animals you have to choose from. Take your list of desired characteristics with you to remind you of any limitations you have on your choice of animal. Remember size, temperament, sex, age, and coat. The behavior of a caged animal is not always the same as the behavior the animal would have in a home environment. Do not necessarily overlook the animals which may appear quiet, scared, or overly excited. Talk to the staff regarding the animal’s temperament, and remove the animal to a quiet place where you may better observe his personality. It is important that the whole family meet the pet, including children and other pets. The meeting should take place in a quiet, neutral environment with the shelter staff present. -www.peteducation.com

he Wolfsies just got back from a vacation, and up until about 20 minutes ago, I was really happy we went away. By pure chance, I happened upon a Web site that contains a list of some of the “national” days during the month of August – several of which I have already missed by being out of the country. This is just a case of bad planning. A few years back I missed National Goat Cheese Month when I went on Dick Wolfsie vacation in August. Humor Goat Cheese Month has always been more fun than National Pickle Month, which has soured since the economy tanked. I do enjoy National Peanut Butter Month, which started slowly, but its appreciation has spread over the years. OK, you ask, how did goat cheese get an entire month? Is there a goat cheese lobby? Maybe you don’t need an act of Congress. Maybe you just say, “This is National Goat Cheese Month and if you don’t like it, well, just get your own month.” August is filled with other surprises, I discovered on the Internet. It’s also National Psoriasis Month and National Happiness Happens Month. I don’t think you can celebrate Happiness Month and Psoriasis Month at the same time with a straight face. Don’t have time to celebrate for 30 days? Don’t despair. You can do all your partying in just 24 hours. How? Look at what else is in August. Alas, you may have already missed a few of these. August 5 was National Mustard Day. This was the first one I’ve missed in 15 years. Too bad. I was on a roll. In August we also have Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day. Participants wear a T-shirt with two timeless sayings: “You Reap What You Sow” printed on the front and “Now It’s Your Problem” on the back. August 8 was National Underwear Day. There is no connection with Zucchini Porch Day, so hide your vegetables somewhere else. August 13 was National Blame Someone Else Day. You were late for work? You spilled coffee on the boss? You crashed your friend’s computer? None of that is your fault. Blame anyone else on this day. But remember: You’re not the only person celebrating. Just wait till you find out what you did. August 23 is National Sponge Cake Day. Enjoy some wild parties, heavy

drinking and adult language. Please. Anything to give the celebration a little flavor. August 21 is National Spumoni Day. For many years there was confusion at the annual festival because NHL hockey players kept showing up thinking it was National Zamboni Day. Do you celebrate Just Because Day? In life, we usually do things because we have
to, or because we want to, or because it’s expected of us. None of those reasons apply August 27. Finally, you have a chance to do something without a rhyme or reason. Which brings us to National Bad Poetry Day. Here’s a great opportunity to butcher a rhyme and not have to apologize for it… I was on vacation for more than a week Visiting things that are Roman and
Greek. This column was silly, I coulda done betta Instead of goat cheese, I shoulda said feta. Dick Wolfsie is an author, columnist, and speaker. Contact him at wolfsie@aol.com.
REMOVING BUSHES TURNS UP SOME WEIRD, NASTY STUFF
Once these things are all attended to, and in the last case buried, I can turn my attention to replacing the yews with something new. A leading contender has been snowball bushes. I’ve always liked those. My grandmother had some around her front porch, and when they were in bloom, they were magnificent. I’ve never seen their equal, which is why I probably won’t plant any. I’m really not that good with non-edible plants. Compared to Grandma’s, my bushes will likely look like snow flurries instead of snowballs. I’ve also been thinking about peonies. My other grandma had peonies at her place. The problem is, peonies are always crawling with ants, and I’ve had enough of ants this year to last me a lifetime. It got wet and they moved right in. The other day I opened the pantry and they were in there trying to steal a gallon jug of molasses. I’ll probably end up going with boxwood hedges. They’re sort of the default bush around here. They grow slow and look nice. And I can get a deal on them. And they’re not yews. Or, as I called them, eeuuws. Especially after I found that sock and that squirrel. • Quite a few newspapers, were aged to the point of being half-recycled already. Note to the paper carriers who brought me replacement copies: Found ‘em. You were right. You DID deliver to my address. I am still of the opinion, however, that you did NOT deliver them to my house. • A pair of pruning shears that evidently jumped off the porch in a desperate

attempt to escape last time I used them. All I remember is I turned around and they had disappeared. And to think I’ve spent months blaming a highly organized gang of pruning-shear thieves. • A sock. It’s not one of mine and I have no idea how it got there. • Various unidentifiable plastic thingies. • What appears to be either the partial remains of a semi-mummified squirrel, or what’s left of some kid’s Davy Crockett hat from the 1950s. Whatever it was, my dog Cookie rolled in it and I had to open every window in the house while giving her a bath.
LAUGHS
W
ell, the tree service came and did its work on those bushes near the front porch. They’re history. Now my house looks weird and I’m singing repeat choruses of “After Yew’ve Gone.” Yew. Get it? See, the bushes were yews and ... oh, never mind. The point is they were old and scraggly and not at all attractive, and by rights, should have been sent to that Mike Redmond Great Mulch Pile Humor In The Sky a good three years ago. Which, I should add, is how non-emergency home improvements work in Mike World: From deciding on a project to actually getting it accomplished usually takes three years. Four if it involves plumbing or electricity. So, finally, 36 months after the inception of the idea, they are gone and I am dealing with the aftermath, beginning with a house that needs some sort of greenery planted in front, and quick. In its present condition, it reminds me of my great-grandma when she took out her upper plate. Then I have to dispose of all the things the tree service guys found in the bushes which were not tree-or-bush-related and therefore not their responsibility, including:
