OUR VIEWS
It is our position that Tricia Hackett, president of the Carmel Clay School Board, should be congratulated on her recent election – and, for that matter, for her willingness to serve. We have high expectations of her abilities and expect her to behave in a manner that represents Carmel. Already, this group has dealt with referendum, contract disputes and a variety of other difficult situations that are taking place in the schools or that are bound to occur during their terms. We hope and anticipate that her leadership will have a dramatic impact on the heading for our schools. The Carmel Clay school system has always been one of the best in the state. Kudos. We believe that is because of the vast number of resources, including its fine board, the school has at its aid. Likewise, parent and local business participation has been a huge asset in helping maintain the integrity of our programs. We urge Ms. Hackett to look towards these resources to continue Carmel Clay’s excellence. Moreover, she inherits an administration and a high-quality group of professional educators. This editorial board will continue to shine a light on the actions of Hackett and her colleagues. But for now, we wish her only felicitations.
Billion here, billion there
It is our position that all citizens, whether claiming liberal or conservative bias, should be concerned about the irresponsible addiction to deficit spending exhibited by our elected officials. During the first nine months of this year, Federal spending exceeded tax revenue by more than one trillion dollars. Fingers are pointed across the aisle, but neither party seems capable of accepting responsibility. When an entity experiences a cash flow shortage, ultimately it must cut overhead. When a bureaucrat is faced with the same crisis, they seem to shift responsibility and demand an increase in borrowing capacity. Hard-working citizens and risk -taking entrepreneurs must pay for these public employees and programs. If police, fire, and school employees are required, let local governments ask the people directly for the authority to expand taxes as many of our communities are doing with public schools. Don’t send dollars to Washington to get pennies back. We should ask ourselves: if we have a shortage of food will the problem be solved by inviting additional guests to dinner. If we conclude that the answer is no, one should also conclude that our current economic malaise will not be improved by bringing more overhead onto our collective balance sheet.

From the backshop Is another Brainard challenger out there? Whoever you are, come out, already! We’re going batty trying to solve a rumor that says a potential candidate with deep pockets and a “different agenda” is lurking somewhere in the city, ready to pop up and challenge the incumbency of Mayor Jim Brainard and his announced challenger, Marnin Spigelman. We’re no experts – and maybe we’re viewing this incorrectly - but if the so-called secret candidate does, indeed, materialize, doesn’t that dilute any attempt to unseat the man who has been in City Hall at the helm of the city since 1995? (In stating that, we’re assuming the person is a Republican.) ••• Follow this lead: Boone County commissioners made a magnificent and significant decision last week in making sales of “Spice,” the synthetic “incense” that, when smoked, is supposed to resemble an amped-up marijuana high and may well end in death for the user. Not only should Hamilton County follow suit immediately, Gov. Mitch Daniels should do as his Tennessee counterpart, Phil Bredesen, did earlier this year, and have one among the Legislature sponsor a bill, which he can sign into law, making it illegal to possess or sell products that use the lab-created compounds.
Brian Kelly & Steve Greenberg ••• FYI to roundabout drivers: If you’re on the inside lane of a two-lane roundabout, you may not (legally) exit to the right. Especially without looking. And tossing the dirty digit because we didn’t come to a stop in moving traffic so you could cross our lane to exit is not going to earn you a single Brownie point. Signs. Read and understand them. ••• Dumb American Voter Update: A disgraced former Orange County, Calif., sheriff convicted of witness tampering received about $215,000 in pension checks last year, one of hundreds of former employees to get big payouts as the county’s retirement system faces a huge shortfall. Remember: He was voted into office.

The balance of power COMMENTARY By Terry Anker An unpleasant business negotiation in which I currently find myself reminds me of how quickly the balance of power can shift in a relationship. One can go from an invaluable member of the team to a pariah in an instant. But mostly, the stress and hurt feelings associated with such gamesmanship has put me into a contemplative state of mind regarding the dynamics that hold together – or destroy – everyday interpersonal relationships. But isn’t each intersection with another human being fraught with the same potential for discord? We are pack animals. And we largely rely upon one another to find security and prosperity. But in such a construct, a hierarchy of authority is a necessity. And when a disruption of that hierarchy occurs, the power does not dissipate; it simply is transferred to another willing vessel. A recent conversation with some younger associates illustrated the point. They asked what my generation had done to ruin the ethic of the up-and-coming generation. First, I argued, the up-and-coming generation was not ruined but
is simply maturing. I have confidence it will blossom. Ultimately, I hold my own generation’s comfort with divorce as the most important singular cause for the rising generation’s alleged sense of entitlement and abhorrence of accountability. Traditional families had two parents whose loyalty largely remained one to the other. Divorced families can allow for a bartering of loyalties with the children ultimately in possession of a considerable share of the power. “I will come to Christmas and be nice to your latest girlfriend, if you buy me the new Prada bag.” Certainly, not all traditional families are functional, nor are all broken families dysfunctional; but the opportunity to use power to one’s advantage is an intoxicant unable to be denied by most thinking adults and certainly not by a hormonal teenager. The Jonas Brothers rescue an otherwise horrible trip to Verizon
DISPATCHES
COMMENTARY By Danielle Wilson Did you go to the Jonas Brothers concert? I had purchased tickets way back in the spring when they first went on sale as birthday presents for my older daughter and her best friend. My youngest was going to also tag along, in addition to the co-financial backer, Grams. Because I refused to pay more than 40 bucks per ticket for ‘tween heart throbs, my only option was lawn seats. Fine. Good. I’ll take five. Can’t wait. The day before the performance, Grams asked if we could include my husband’s, aunt who was visiting from Florida. We checked our seats to see if there was an available ticket nearby, but couldn’t find section K on Verizon’s online venue map. So we called the center, got no answer, and then decided since the concert wasn’t sold out, she could just grab a ticket at the concert. The following evening, we piled into my van – six females aged 6 to 68 – and headed off to the corn fields. It was hot and balmy, but clear. On the way, I realized I’d left my cell phone at home. So had Grams, but we had no time to retrieve them. No worries; I managed fine without a phone at my first concert (Cheap Trick!) We parked, hiked to the amphitheater, and joined the quarter-of-a-mile-long line to get in. The girls handled the wait well, and when the gate opened, the line moved fairly swiftly. Once inside, we split up – me with the girls and Grams with the ticketless aunt. We agreed to meet at our seats. Problem was, we didn’t actually have seats. Though listed on our tickets as Section K, Seats 33-37, they were phantom numbers that corresponded to nothing except empty grassland, which was now filling quickly with far better prepared families. We had no blanket, no beach chairs, and no idea how we would meet up with our elders. Luckily, the girls were oblivious to my mounting stress level and anti-Verizon thoughts. Did I mention I was wear-

ing a white linen skirt? Miraculously, I was able to spot Grams and Aunt among the hoards about 20 minutes later. Grams was also furious; Aunt’s lawn ticket cost less than half of what I had paid in May. Even worse, Aunt’s back wouldn’t be able to handle four hours of sitting on sloping grass. Through divine mercy, I had a chair and blanket stashed in my car. But wait! Verizon doesn’t allow “Pass Outs.” They did, however, take pity on two “elderly” ladies hoping to get to said car and back with said provisions. Disaster averted. The 7 p.m. concert started 35 minutes late, and the opening act was a lame promo for an upcoming Disney movie. Demi Lovato, even with her amazing hair, is no Joe, Kevin or Nick. At 9:15 p.m., we were still waiting for the main attraction. Were they even here? What was the hold up? How could a Disneysponsored event run this late, when their target audience’s bedtime was 10 minutes ago? All I could think was, “This was a huge waste of time and money.” And then, it happened. Lasers and pyrotechnics and smoke erupted amid the deafening squeals of 10,000 sugar-crazed girls. The Jonas Brothers were in the HOUSE! And they were good. Really good. I found myself forgetting all about the tickets, the waiting, the heat, and the inevitable hearing loss, and simply enjoyed an evening under the stars with my daughters. Kudos to Disney and Verizon for avoiding the nasty-gram I’d been mentally composing and creating a night to remember. Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a Carmel resident and contributing columnist. A&D District business closes its doors By Brandon Bowman Current in Carmel David Ferrin has the unique task of deciding what to do with some left over wine now that Ferrin’s Fruit Winery is closing Ferrin its doors after 10 years of business in Carmel. Ferrin, 66, said operating Ferrin’s Fruit Winery was a never-ending job. “I don’t think my wife and I have had a lot of vacation time since we opened. I think we’ll do some traveling now,” Ferrin said. During the 10 years the winery was in operation, Ferrin’s outside-the-box wine flavorings won him medals at international wine festivals. “One of the apple wines won second place at
a festival,” Ferrin said. “When I started, I just wanted to do something different with wine.” Located in the Arts & Design District, Ferrin’s Fruit Winery has been witness to some large changes over the last 10 years. “I’ve lived in Carmel my entire life, and I love it here. It was just time for me to move on. I wasn’t ready to take on any more,” Ferrin said. Resisting the conventional wisdom that California wines could sell well in Carmel, Ferrin created something that was uniquely Carmel with Ferrin’s Fruit Winery. “What I’ll remember most is the conversations I had with everyone who ever came in here. I’m leaving with a lot of good memories and no regrets,” Ferrin said. The asking price for the building is $495,000.

Tour De Carmel ready to kick off its sixth year By Elizabeth Noel Current in Carmel Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation and St. Vincent Sports Performance will sponsor the sixth annual Tour de Carmel Sept. 11. The bike ride begins at the Monon Community Center and winds 20 miles throughout Carmel. According to Lindsay Labas, marketing manager of Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation, the St. Vincent Tour de Carmel is one of Carmel’s most popular events. “I think it’s so special because it is a family event,” she said. “It is a bike ride, not a race, so people can choose how quickly they want to go and really spend time with each other.” The Tour de Carmel will also feature an adaptive 10-mile race for participants with special needs. Staff and volunteers will be scattered throughout the group along the adaptive route for extra help. Along the route, riders can stop at rest areas to replenish with beverages and listen to the local bands that will be scattered throughout the ride. Once bikers finish the race, they will be greeted with entertainment and refreshments. Though the park board started talking about this bike ride in the 1990s, it was too busy to organize it. After an “alternative transportation” meeting seven years ago, the board decided the bike ride would be a great way to promote the Monon Greenway and the trails throughout the city.

In 2004, the first annual bike ride attracted 800 participants. This year, Labas is expecting about 1,500 bikers. “It is just a great chance for people to get out and see our community,” she said. “They can really see what the parks department has done. Carmel residents make back to school memorable for less fortunate VOLUNTEERS By Jeff Worrell I remember fondly the annual rituals of backto-school week with my kids: My wife clicking pictures of each child as they posed and smiled before climbing the steps of the school bus. The last-minute shopping trip to purchase every item on the detailed, brand-specific schoolsupply list. Although I wouldn’t even dare to request a picture now, as my CHS senior gets in her car for day one, I am going to savor one last meet-theteacher night in the Carmel Clay School System. I always come away from that evening impressed by the enthusiasm and professionalism of the teachers and staff of each school my children have attended. I expect my last year to be no different, and I am looking forward to those familiar feelings of gratitude that I live in Carmel and my children received their education here. Another group of people are also grateful to live in our community, but for a very different reason. The first week of school for them, although great for their kids, causes anxiety and dread. They worry about providing the basics of clothing and school supplies to help their children fit in, be comfortable and have the proper tools to foster learning. Because of job loss, underemployment or
circumstances beyond their control, a $50 school supplies list or $25 backpack is out of reach. Not to mention a new pair of shoes, a jacket or other basic necessities. So, Pam Curtis, Janyne Slayton and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church decided to work on the problem. Thanks to their leadership and a team effort, during the weekend of July 22, they were able to help more than 1,000 kids receive backpacks and school supplies. The kids actually got to pick out their own backpack as part of the Tools for School campaign sponsored by Keller Williams and Bank of America. But wait, there’s more. Pam, Jayne, and the families of OLMC, Grace Community Church and Green Valley Church of Christ also made sure each child received a new pair of shoes, socks and underwear – and through Kid’s Coats and Comfort Closet, coats and clothes. The goal was to help serve 800 kids, and the number rose to 1,000. The need is great, and OLMC is still collecting school supplies and clothing to continue helping as many children as possible. Carmel child one of many who has benefited from the Indiana chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation By Danielle Turnbull Current in Carmel In 2006, 7-year-old Carmel resident Emily Steadman was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disorder, a life-threatening diagnosis. Her family became a part of the Riley Children’s Hospital family and – aside from insurance challenges caused by her disorder – Emily’s family has received what they find to be phenomenal treatment. And their pleasure does not end there. The Make-A-Wish foundation of Indiana has stepped in to make one of Emily’s dreams a reality. The Make-A-Wish foundation grants wishes to children suffering from life-threatening diagnoses. The Indiana chapter of Make-A-Wish began in 1983, and since its inception 25 years ago, it has granted 250 wishes each year. The organization as a whole has grown into the largest wishgranting organization in the world, according to Amy Allison, senior development officer with Make-A-Wish Indiana. “To be a part of it is a bit overwhelming, but we feel blessed,” Beth Steadman, Emily’s mother, said. “It’s a unique situation to be in, and we’re proud of to be a part of it.” Not just any child can receive a wish, however. There is a qualification process. A child, first, must have a life-threatening medical condition. Then, the child must be between the ages of
www.youarecurrent.com
2 and a half and 18. The primary-care doctor will then determine whether the medical condition is life-threatening or not. When those qualifications are met, the child is accepted. “We won’t turn any child away,” Allison said. Then the wish process begins. Volunteers will arrive at the child’s home and meet with the family. They ask four different questions: • If you could go anywhere, where would you go? • If you could be anything, what would you be? • If you could meet anyone, whom would you meet? • If you could have anything, what would it be? A “wish progress” staff books everything and provides the money needed for the wish, but the volunteers really make the magic happen. The Indiana chapter has more than 400 volunteers. “We rely heavily on the volunteers for the wish process,” Allison said. Steadman is thankful for the volunteers with the organization. She said they have been very proactive and always follow up and make sure her family knows that they are there for support and encouragement. “I’ve always thought the cause is a great one,” Steadman said. And the benefits have been reaped. The Make-A-Wish foundation has done a number of studies. According to Allison, one thing it’s found is that 2/3 of parents said they saw their child’s condition improve following the fulfillment of the wish. Studies have also found that 99 percent of parents said the wish helped get the child through treatment for their ailment. “A lot of them need something to look forward to,” Allison said. “It’s like a light at the end of their tunnel.” However, many people don’t view the Make-A-Wish founda-
Current in Carmel
tion as a hopeful organization. That is one misconception that Allison said many people hold on to – that the organization is a “last wish” organization. However, that is not the case. The child does have to have a life-threatening illness, but the wish is not meant to be a death-sentence, Allison said. The wish is meant to provide hope for both the child and his or her family. And most of the time, the whole family gets to participate, specifically when travel is involved. “It’s not just the wish child who is affected,” Allison said. And no wish can happen without donations. Either individuals or companies can donate to the organization. Plus, when one donates to a specific region or state, 100 percent of the money will stay in that region or state. One organization in Muncie, Midwest ISO, has taken on the Make-A-Wish foundation as its corporate charity. Since 2007, the organization has helped grant the wishes of 54 children and raised more than $365,000 dollars. “We really enjoy putting a smile on a sick child’s face,” Mary Lynn Webster, manager of internal communications at Midwest ISO, said. The Steadman family is thankful for the support and hope that has been provided by the Make-A-Wish foundation, Steadman said. Because of the organization, Emily and her family will be going to Colorado in April to go skiing at a resort specifically geared toward children with special needs. This was Emily’s wish, and the Make-A-Wish foundation has made that wish a reality. For more information about donating to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, visit www.makeawishindiana.org.

Choosing the perfect area rug for your home
DISPATCHES » Does shampoo stop working? – If your mane starts misbehaving, don't fall for the shampoo-resistance rumor. Hair is dead and can't biologically adapt to shampoo. Even though your hair can't get "used to" you favorite shampoo, there are reasons to switch: You have buildup from heavy conditioners (use a clarifying shampoo occasionally); you started color or straightening (opt for moisturizing fomulas); of the weather changed (as your stylist for a seasonal routine). -www.prevention.com » Fall’s perfect bootie? - It may seem premature to suggest that this is the perfect boot for fall 2010, but Joie's San Francisco bootie goes with everything, has a reasonable four-inch heel, has a metal cap toe doubling the shoe’s lifespan, and considering it’s a well-made leather boot with brass detailing, it’s a steal at $375. Available at shopbop.com. -www.elle.com » Gold Leaf Eye Shadow – The Belmacz Blitz Gold Leaf Eye Shadow ($38) is a cream containing two leaves of pure 24-karat gold. Although it’s sold as makeup, it makes a subtle and chic body shimmer. A little goes a long way, too. One pot can last a whole summer even with frequent use. -www.style.com
INTERIORS By Vicky Earley The formula for determining the best size for an area rug is not going to be found in a geometry text book, nor is it an exact science. Because the type of room and furniture placement should factor into your decision, there are variables to consider. The first step is always to measure the space using a tape measure. One of the most common mistakes is to rely on a visual measurement of the space. A rug can look quite different in a store than at home. Company C, a manufacturer of colorful wool rugs, offers the following suggestions on the subject of size determination. Living or family room • It is recommended selecting a size that allows each piece of furniture to be completely on or off the rug. The exception to this rule is a sofa, because it is common for the back legs of a sofa to hang off the rug. • Make sure to account for any heating vents or doorways. • Depending on the usage of the room, you may want to consider traffic patterns. • If there’s a hearth in the room, consider purchasing another small rug for placement in front of the fireplace. • Coordinate the size of the rug with the size of your coffee table. • An 8x11 rug brings together most furniture groupings nicely. Dining and breakfast rooms • When selecting a room size rug for the dining room, you need to measure the length and width of your table. Don’t forget to include the table leaf if you use it frequently. • It is best when the rug is large enough so the back legs of the dining room chairs can be placed on it. This will avoid chair legs getting caught on the edge of the rug when guests are
pushing their chairs in and out. Bedroom • When measuring for a bedroom, you must first determine if you prefer one room size rug or several rugs around the bed. • When considering one room-sized rug, it should be large enough for you to take a step or two when getting out of bed. • If you have one bed centered in the room, you can place a rug at the foot of the bed and one on each side. If you have two beds in the room, you can add one more rug in between them. • This is the perfect place to play around with rug sizes. Try a round rug or a rectangular rug placed at a diagonal underneath the bed. Entry Way • Consider a material that can handle the high-traffic areas. • Wool has the advantage of lanolin, which is natural moisture repellant. • Make sure the door can open and close over the rug. Consider the thickness or pile height of the room. • If it’s a long hallway, you can also consider using two 5-foot runners. If you are computer literate, try their rug planner, which can be found at http://www.companyc.com/roomplanner.htm. If not, just tape the actual space out with low-tack painters tape. Your rug is the foundation for the remainder of the room, so planning is key!

Habits are habit forming Examples of some good habits: • Exercising regularly. • Planning ahead • Showing respect for others Examples of some bad habits: • Thinking negatively • Feeling inferior • Blaming others” When we notice bad habits in our kids, the very best approach is to use my two favorite phrases. Bad habit … bad choice. Good habit … good choice. It’s surprising how we don’t have to say another word. Our kids get the message. If it’s appropriate and you have a positive example of what is a good habit, then by all means, expand your comments. Otherwise, step aside and let your kid decide the best approach to forming good habits from the bad. Make sense? Let me know what you think. Hugs!
PARENTING By Becky Kapsalis I’m happy to report I’ve learned a new phrase to use on my kids and grandkids when I feel the need for a teachable moment without making them cower from guilt or cringe with fear of recrimination. That phrase is “(Child’s name), that’s a bad habit. What’s a good habit you can replace it with?” I’m equally sad to report it’s taken me all these years to learn this approach. I’ve developed the bad habit of thinking I had to tell my kids how to behave. If I knew then what I know now, I would get into the good habit of asking them how they think they need to be behaving, helping them form good behavior habits on their own (as in the habit of self-accountability). Some experts say that it takes 21 days of a consistent pattern to form a habit-good or bad. If that’s the case, the good news is that any bad habit can be reversed into a consistently good habit in just 21 days. Sean Covey (“The 7 habits of highly effective teens”) writes, “Our habits can make us or break us. We become what we repeatedly do.”

Simplify your check-writing GRAMMAR LESSON By Brandie Bohney A few years back, one of the debit card companies was running a series of commercials you may recall. Each one contained a busy, bustling store or restaurant where things were running like clockwork and there was much spinning and gyrating and movement until someone would pay with a check. Then the music would screech to a halt, packages or plates would go flying, and there was much aggravation. Then the check-writer would finish paying in awkward silence as everyone watched, aghast. The next person would pay with a debit card, and the music would wind back up with all the movement from before the pesky check-writer appeared. I got to thinking about these check-writing commercials recently because of today’s topic. I’ve always felt self-conscious when there’s someone behind me in line and I have to write a check –it always seems to take forever with the next person in queue staring me down. So I always look for ways to make my check-writing process faster. Over the years, my signature has gotten shorter, sloppier, and less legible (but faster). I abbreviate whatever I can. And I always eliminate the word and from the numbers I have to write out as words. That last part is a biggie. Not only does it save
www.youarecurrent.com
me time in writing checks, but it’s actually the way numbers are supposed to be written. When writing out 211, the words should be two hundred eleven, not two hundred and eleven. Eliminating the and is not only appropriate (the and historically represents addition in spoken equations), but it also saves time, space, and effort. The same is true when you speak numbers, too, and that’s where things get really hairy. Virtually no one follows the no-and rule when speaking numbers. Have you ever heard someone refer to the Disney Dalmatian movie as One Hundred One Dalmatians? No. It’s always One Hundred and One Dalmatians. Even the Disney voice-over guy pronounces it with the and. I find it mildly irritating to hear numbers pronounced with and, but I understand the mistake because it’s so frequent. I’ve even caught myself doing it from time to time. Still, it’s important to know the appropriate way to speak and write numbers, and in any formal document or discussion, care should be taken to do so correctly. But it probably won’t stop the glares you get as you write a check at Wal-Mart. Brandie Bohney is a grammar enthusiast and former English teacher. If you have a grammarrelated question, please email her at bbthegrammarguru@gmail.com.

Upcoming fashion show to raise heart disease awareness By Danielle Turnbull Current in Carmel Mary & Martha’s Exceedingly Chic Boutique, Clarian North Hospital of Carmel and 11 models with personal experience with heart disease will all be taking part in a fundraiser for the American Heart Association this Friday. The Heartbeat of Style Fashion Show benefiting the American Heart Association will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in the Grand Atrium at Clarian North Hospital. Indy Dine will be providing appetizers and drinks for the guests. Ology Day Spa will be present, providing chair massages and other services to guests, and 10 percent of the spa’s profits at the event will go to the American Heart Association. A unique part of the event centers on the 11 models. “The models are not your ordinary, skinny models,” Carly Temple, coordinator of patient experience and guest relations at Clarian North Hospital, said. “They are cardiac patients.” Lisa Stiles, certified case manager and a registered nurse at Clarian North Hosptial,

is one example. She has experience with open-heart surgery and will be a model in the Heartbeat of Style show. As a child, Stules had open-heart surgery in 1969. It was one of the first open-heart surgeries conducted on the east coast. “I am a myriad of things to cardiovascular disease,” Stiles said. “It’s very near and dear to my heart.” Not only is it a passion for Stiles, but heart disease is an area of passion for Temple, as well. She has a grandfather who has had a heart attack and a mother who has heart problems. She said both of those personal connections have stirred her passion for the subject. “It has enabled me to really want to make a change,” Temple said. “And every little bit counts.” Although the event is being held to raise money for the American Heart Association, Temple said the focus is really on raising awareness. She hopes women will think and start paying more attention to their bodies and the signs it gives them. “My goal is not to get the most money,” Temple said. “My goal is to raise awareness.”

Healthy and great-tasting desserts? First step: Toss the sugar RECIPES By Chef Ozzie Many people are looking for ways to enjoy the foods they love – apple pie, banana bread, chocolate cake with frosting, etc. – without the sugar. Whether they’re one of the more than 23 million people who suffer from diabetes or they just want to watch their sugar and carbohydrate intake, consumers today have no shortage of options on the grocery shelves. When I travel to food expos, diabetes conferences and women’s shows, I’m often asked how to incorporate sugar substitutes in baking and cooking. As many consumers and food editors have come to find out, not all sweeteners are created equally. Some sugar substitutes actually contain sugar as a “sugar blend;” others have a bitter after taste, and many are just too difficult to use because they don’t measure cup for cup like sugar. I recommend finding the sugar substitute that works best for you and pay attention to the conversion. Another consideration when using sugar substitutes is the baking time. It often needs to be decreased slightly. For example, cookies or brownies may need three to five minutes less time in the oven, while cakes can come out seven to 10 minutes sooner than the recipes specifies. For those cake recipes that call for sugar, there are sugar-substitute options available, but ours is the only one that doesn’t contain sugar yet measures cup for cup like regular sugar. Some of the products on the market are actually blends; ours is primarily xylitol, a natural sweetener derived from fruits and vegetables and known for its added health benefits. (Many sugar-free gum/ mint manufacturers have used xylitol in their products since the ’70s.) Of course, it’s great on cereal too, and in many recipes as a simple substitution for sugar. So, check out my recipe for No-Dairy Chocolate Cake or any of the recipes at www.idealsweet.com. I’d love to hear about your baking experience. You can find me on Facebook – look for Chef Ozzie – or on Lifetime Television’s show, “The Balancing Act.”

Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin, two brilliant geeky nerds, become friends as Harvard undergrads and attempted to navigate the university social scene. They are better with computers and decide to create and launch a social networking Web site with the hope of accelerating their social life as much as start a business. The creation of Facebook took early imagination, genius and timing, whether it was by accident, a stolen idea and/or luck. Details focus on personal relationships, backstabbing and high drama rather than the technical and business aspects of a start up. This odd venture includes friendship and betrayal as well as questionable ethics and power; the result includes multiple lawsuits, bad feelings and the world’s youngest billionaire. The author begins his story by admitting that Zuckerberg refused all interviews – so the story is admittedly one-sided – but this does not take away from the entertaining, fast-paced glimpse into the founding of Facebook. A movie based on “The Accidental Billionaires” is in the works. Reviewed by Susan Wylin CCPL Reference Librarian

Behind the curtain
Jim Austin, the executive producer of the Jan. 29, 2011, gala for The Palladium at The Center for the Performing Arts, along with his committee of volunteers, skippered an elegant preview of the culinary delights that will be featured at what will become, perhaps, Carmel’s greatest arts-related social event of all time. With food and beverages expertly prepared and served by an extremely attentive Kahn’s Catering staff under Joe Husar’s direction, more than 70 attendees – including one who made a very timely surprise visit, Michael Feinstein, who had jetted in from California just as dinner was being served – dined to the strains of a talented jazz ensemble in the Great Hall of the Indiana Design Center last Thursday night. 1. The menu for the evening: Elegance and palate-pleasing. 2. Salon 01 marketing director Christi Thompson (left) and owner Micki Stirsman, who also is a member of the Gala committee, pause during dinner. 3. Tables deftly feature the signature colors of The Palladium’s identity campaign. 4. 5. Michael Feinstein drops in on the center’s executive director, Steven Libman (left) and his wife, Keitha. 6.

Being understood out of context New classes COMMENTARY By David Cain I was on a plane three years ago, getting my carry-on out of the overhead bin. Just then, a gentleman from behind me stood up and, as we were crammed in the aisle, leaned forward and said to me, “You ride, man?” I looked at him awkwardly and slowly nudged forward in the aisle. He followed me out of the plane and asked in the corridor, “So, you got a bike.” I answered a polite “no” and kept moving. He fell back, disappointed by my lack of interest. Weeks later, it happened again. As I sat next to a man on the plane, he stated enthusiastically, “Do you ride?” I didn’t even really understand what he was asking me and didn’t want to pursue it, so I again responded with “no,” and we sat quietly the rest of the flight. A few weeks went by and, again, as I was leaving a meeting a man said, “You into bikes?” Now, that time I heard what he said. I answered, “Not really.” I mean I do have a nice mountain bike, but how would this gent know that? For more than a year I would get similar comments. I could never make the connection. Then one sunny day I was heading into a meeting. As I walked by a motorcycle in the parking lot, I caught a glimpse of the brand name on
the bike. It said Ducati. I glanced down and it was the same name sewn on my bag. I stopped in my tracks as 20 conversations over the last 18 months suddenly made sense. I had purchased this bag from Tumi and honestly never paid much attention to Ducati written on the side. For this entire time, I thought it was water. As it turns out, that’s Dasani, not Ducati. I thought my fashionable bag was subtly promoting water when, in reality, it was a magnet for conversations about fast bikes. Random men still approach me to discuss my bike and now I know what they’re talking about. There is a lesson here less subtle than the embroidered brand name on my bag. If there is a possibility that your brand name won’t make sense out of context (on a bag instead of a bike), you might consider putting some identification with it. For example, Tabor Law Firm by itself might not completely tell the story. However, Tabor Law Firm, your partner in life-changing injuries, tells you what they do. Are you understood out of context? Type: Traditional Age: Built in 1992 Location: Near 146th Street and Spring Mill Road. Neighborhood: Spring Mill Pond is a custom home community with mature trees and larger lots with a community pool, playground, tennis and basketball courts. Square footage: 3,815, including 971 in the finished basement Rooms: This four-bedroom home has a two-story entry, main floor office, formal living and dining rooms, family room with gas fireplace, built-in bookshelves, and spacious kitchen with center island, planning desk, stainless appliances and hardwoods. Upstairs offers four bedrooms plus a bonus room. There is also a finished basement with recreation room and plenty of storage. The exterior has a three-car garage, screened porch, fenced backyard and mature trees. Strengths: The seller has priced this home very aggressively and it is a great value for the neighborhood. Of all the active listings in Spring Mill Pond, this is currently priced as the least expensive. There are large trees and ponds throughout the neighborhood. Challenges: There is not a full basement. Some comparable listings have solid surface kitchen counter tops, and this home does not.

After moving to the Carmel area from Colorado, Scott and Mindy Smith could not find a school they thought felt right for their children. “Our son was at a Primrose in Colorado,” Scott said. “We just didn’t have that family feeling at any of the schools in the area, and we decided to take on a new adventure.” That adventure included opening a new location of Primrose in Carmel. “It’s something that is needed in the Carmel area,” Scott said. “We love seeing the kids progress both academically and socially.” Primrose offers a new experience for children and parents in the Carmel area. The school has a modified curriculum for each class. “One of our big things is curriculum. We have a standard curriculum that is developed by early childhood educators from our corporate office,” Scott said. “Once we get that curriculum, we tailor it for each class to help the children develop academically and socially.” One of the other things Primrose focuses on is having age appropriate classrooms and areas for the children. “We have four separate playgrounds,” Scott said. “The playgrounds are for each of the different age groups.” Owners: Scott and Mindy Smith Address: 780 W. Caution: Sugar accelerates aging HEALTH By Angela LaSalle M.D. Most people would think it unhealthy to walk to the sugar bowl and down six teaspoons of the powdery white stuff, and do it repeatedly throughout the day. Yet many of us do just that by ingesting foods and drinks that contain sugar. Four grams of sugar equals one teaspoon. Eating something containing 26 grams of sugar is the same as dumping six and a half teaspoons into our body. A quick review of the popular brands of regular sodas revealed a startling 40 to 46 grams of sugar per can. That’s an average of 10 teaspoons of sugar, nearly ¼ cup. So what are the health consequences of such a high sugar intake? We know about weight gain and diabetes, but the diabolical nature of sugar isn’t just about excessive calorie intake. Sugar accelerates aging and disease by attaching itself to proteins in the body, which can disrupt their function and lead to disease producing inflammation. The medical term is “glycation,” and a simplified example of this is how sugar caramelizes or causes browning when heated with fats or proteins in foods. When reading labels look for other forms of sugar such as: • High-fructose corn syrup • Concentrated fruit juice
• Dextrose • Glucose • Molasses • Corn syrup • Maltose • Sucrose, • Xylitol or mannitol. So whether it’s wrinkles, degenerative arthritis, heart disease or diabetes you’re trying to prevent, it’s a good idea to start by taking a look at how much sugar you are really eating. Try giving yourself a visual makeover: Add up the number of grams of sugar in foods you commonly eat, divide that number by four, and then measure out the number of teaspoons of sugar that represents. You may be shocked at the pile of sugar mounting on your countertop. The stickiness you feel when you are cleaning up a sugary drink or food off your kitchen counter is the same thing that can happen inside your body. Remember, sugar damages our body’s proteins, and sticky protein equals accelerated aging. Angela LaSalle, M.D. practices integrative medicine with the Indiana Health Group in Carmel and is board certified in family medicine. For more information, visit, www. angelalasallemd.com.

Oh, my! Do I have a massage rant for you? MASSAGE By Sally Feldman I think at least once a week I hear someone say, “I don’t want anyone else touching me but my spouse” or, “I would never have a massaaaaage” or, “So, do you give happy endings?” So many misconceptions, so little time. After becoming certified, I was shocked with the amount of archaic thinking there was about massage therapy. Do physical therapists get hassled like this? Chiropractors? No, they don’t. But, because there have been prostitutes over the years “calling” themselves massage therapists, we authentic therapists have to take the heat, the jokes, the innuendo and (yes) the fear of being compromised inappropriately in some way. Anyone who has picked up a newspaper has seen the debacle … and after the vice squad raid and the newsflash at 11 about the “girls” on Central who offered a little sumpin sumpin – we certified massage therapists have to put up
with unprecedented parallels in our industry that reeks of sleazy. No fair. I’m still paying off my school loans. I say: enough. Please, don’t judge massage therapy until you make an appointment with a certified massage therapist. Heck, we spend weeks at a time on proper, appropriate draping alone and months on end studying our code of ethics and standards of practice. This type of silliness is just that and it must stop. As they say in “Father of the Bride” …“It’s the 90’s Mr. Banks.” Okay, I’ll calm down now. After all, it’s 2010. Go. Fight! Win! Let the massages begin. Sally Feldman is a certified massage therapist and a member of Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals. For more information, e-mail her at sfeld427@gmail.com

In cosmetic surgery, what’s in a name? BODY BEAUTY By Dr. Barry Eppley Catchy and clever names are an integral part of branding in the essential game of marketing for most products. A great working product without a memorable name may never catch any attention with the public, while a mediocre product could grab a market share with just the right name. While this use of “naming” is part of everyday marketing in retail sales, it is fairly uncommon in health care. In plastic surgery, however, marketing often veers from the path of traditional medicine. In the world of cosmetic surgery, thanks to the reach of the Internet, we are seeing the emergence and widespread use of clever names (and sometimes deliberately confusing ones!) to entice patients to have procedures and surgery. The most well-known example is that of the “Lifestyle Lift.” Promising to turn the clock back at least 10 years, its snazzy name seeks to assure patients it will fit into their “lifestyles.” Interestingly, nowhere in their advertising does the company suggest it is actual surgery. I have seen numerous patients surprised to learn it is actually an operation. These same people are certainly surprised to learn the “Lifestyle Lift” is more than 20 years old and is practiced by most plastic surgeons. The fear of what transpires during a “tummy
24 | August 24, 2010
tuck” keeps many women from actually having one. While there are different versions of tummy tucks, they all involve some degree of invasion of your mid-section, and some period of recovery. The “smooth tuck” procedure puts a different twist on it. Promising less than a week of recovery and six-pack abs, who would not want to have one? My current favorite is the “vampire lift.” Using modern platelet and stem-cell biology, the concept of extracting and purifying your blood for its healing components is used in many surgical specialties. While it can be a useful adjunct to certain surgeries, the fact that it is natural does not give it “pixie dust” properties. The vampire lift takes that concept and uses it as a substitute for injectable fillers to plump up your face. While this is an organic way to dispose of your money, it is a far fantasy from actual medical science. What’s in a name? In cosmetic surgery, clever names often disguise an established procedure and might be just another way to catch the attention of a perspective patient.

Strong enough to be weak SPIRITUALITY By Bob Walters There is a weekly CBS TV drama called “The Good Wife” in which a female lawyer more or less “stands by her man.” The adulterous husband is a formerly highpowered public official convicted in a complex political scandal. He lives in 24-7 ankle-bracelet home detention at their trendy downtown apartment. It’s mainly a lawyer and law-firm show, but the disgraced husband – philandering, yes, but is he wrongly convicted? – provides an interesting layer of moral dilemma. I tend to watch cable news, history and movies, not “TV shows.” My wife … a good wife … DVRs programs to “watch” while she is sewing or scrapbooking since we rarely have the time or the inclination to watch weeknight TV dramas. My attention was grabbed by a DVR’ed rerun of “The Good Wife” when it introduced a Christian spin in the “bad husband’s” rehabilitation. In a nutshell, the bad husband, Peter, has a loyal private investigator / public image consultant named Eli Gold who advises him to start going to church as a public relations tactic. Gold picks out a nearby urban evangelical church pastored by a very devout and savvy black preacher who tells Peter – who is white and grew up Episcopalian – to get out of his church. He felt Gold and Peter were using him
and mocking Christ, which of course, they were. But Peter is struck by the preacher’s sincerity and directness, tells Gold to leave, and Peter accepts Christ. Peter wants to change, confesses his sin, wades into Bible study and prayer, and the preacher begins mentoring Peter in twiceweekly home visits. Neither “The Good Wife” nor Gold can understand Peter’s conversion, much less take it seriously. There is much eye-rolling, sarcasm, and skepticism. Peter’s mother, a formidable, smart, matriarchal, old-money type, insists Peter see the family’s long-time Episcopal priest to “put his (Peter’s) religion in perspective.” Her final decree against Peter’s deepening faith in Christ, belief in salvation, understanding of his sin and desire for change is – irony of scriptural ironies – “I will not allow my son to be made weak.” Weak? In Christ? I don’t know a single Christian who believes Christ makes them weak. Christ is about humility and strength; He is man and God. But we all know, sadly, that much of the world seeks power anywhere but in Christ. The TV show got that right.

Looking for other singles? RELATIONSHIPS By Rachael Noble The No. 1 question I am always asked is, “Where do all the single men/women hang out other than just the bars and clubs?” I’m not surprised by this question, because it’s one I’ve been asking myself for the last few years. After my divorce 10 years ago, I remember thinking that I was literally the only single person in Carmel. I found myself constantly surrounded by families (not a terrible thing, but also not ideal when you’re sitting with a bunch of kissing couples at the stroke of midnight during New Year’s Eve parties). Now some of my suggestions of where to meet singles are not quite my cup of tea (I’m more of a bookstore/coffee shop type of gal), but they may be yours. I suggest trying them all – even more than once – as they may be hit or miss depending on the time of year or other events taking place at the same time. Check out some of these ideas: • Keep a close eye on Indyscene.com. Many singles visit this Web site and attend the listed events. • Attend as many festivals as possible (especially during the later evening hours). • Take some golf lessons, and hit some balls at the driving range. • Believe it or not, some single professionals eat at Panera Bread at lunch in certain parts

of the city – especially on 86th Street near Allisonville Road. Sometimes coffee shops and bookstores are a good place to hang out (women especially hang out there, guys!). During the summer, visit Champs on Thursday nights and Bella Vita during some of their special event nights. During the winter, try Scotty’s Brewhouse on Wednesday nights and Thursday nights at Sullivan’s (bar area). Attend wine tastings, charity events and singles events. During the summer, the IMA hosts a movie night where they show movies and attendees are welcome to bring wine and food. Attend sporting events – Colts, Pacers, Indians and Ice games – and consider joining a co-ed sports league. Check out Cystic Fibrosis fund raisers throughout the year (and consider being a Bachelor or Bachelorette!) and Zoobilation (get your tickets early as they sell out quickly). And of course, there’s always online dating. This seems to be where all the singles in this area resort to find other singles. Rachael Noble is a single Carmel resident and contributing columnist. » Babies steal pet’s spotlight – A new study of pet owners in Indiana finds that parenthood does affect the way people think about and treat their domesticated furballs. The study involved survey questions about how much time people spent with their animals, what they did together, and how often the pets got medical care. "People with children spent less time with their animals and took them to the vet less often," said David Blouin, a cultural sociologist at Indiana University South Bend. -www.msnbc.com » Women confide in dogs – According to a recent study in the U.K. by dog-food company Winalot, nearly 20 percent of women confide in their canines, reports The Daily Express. The findings don’t stop there. The same study found that 14 percent of women and 10 percent of men believe their dogs can read their minds. Maybe that’s how they always know when it’s time to eat. -www.pawnation.com
Sleeping in is sweet – for you and your dog
CANINES By John Mikesell Five things to do when your dog wakes you up too early every day: Rule out medical conditions. Make sure your dog doesn’t have a legitimate reason for getting up early. Find out if he has a urinary tract infection or his digestive system is upset, or if he has some other medical issue that affects his elimination habits. Tire him out the night before. A tired dog is a well-behaved, happy dog, and a late sleeper. Exercise uses up much of the energy he presently can’t wait to wake you up with, and it also releases endorphins, which regulate mood, producing a feeling of well-being. This also may benefit your own sleep habits. It works the same with humans. Feed him earlier/better; make “last call” later. Increase the time between your dog’s last meal and his last bathroom opportunity to minimize the chance he’s waking you up because he really has to go. It only takes a few “I really have to go” mornings to set an early-riser routine. Don’t forget that a high-quality diet is more digestible, which reduces fecal output, which reduces early morning urgency. Reduce stimuli in the bedroom. The less there is to awaken your dog, the less likely he is to awaken you. Close the drapes. Turn off the TV. Turn on a white noise machine or soft classical music.

Train him to sleep in. If these management solutions don’t work, you may be able to train him to sleep later. If your normal wake up time is 6:30, and he wakes you up at 6:15, for one week set your alarm at 6:05. For the second week 6:10 and so until you reach 6:30. Do not get up before the alarm goes off. This should condition him to the sound of the alarm as his cue to get up. Of course, if you have young children who start running through the house at 5 a.m. or garbage trucks rumbling down your street, then all bets are off. PETS OF THE WEEK Cali is a 10-month-old female chocolate American pit bull terrier mix. Cali is an outgoing girl who is very gentle when taking treats. She can get a bit more excited about her food bowl, and she tends to protect it a bit; this is a correctable behavior for an experienced owner or trainer, but until she learns to share she needs a home with children age 10 or older. Cali is a gorgeous girl who knows the commands “sit” and “down,” and she is more than willing to learn more. Hera is a 2-year-old female tabby DSH. Hera is a little shy when meeting someone knew, but with a little patience, she will warm up and enjoy attention. She arrived at the shelter March 22 when a nice person found her wandering the streets. She is a petite girl with a tendency to be a bit skittish around loud noises and new situations, so she might prefer a quiet home. Hera is a very sweet girl who only wants a home to call her own where there is a lap to lay on and make her the happiest kitty ever. They are real jokesters at the home gym factory HUMOR By Mike Redmond No one is going to mistake me for Arnold Schwarzenegger. For one thing, I’m not fool enough to be governor of California, a state that has proven innumerable times to be ungovernable. Also, I am not exactly built like ol’ Arnie, all bulging biceps and chiseled chest. But I have dreams. No, not about trying to herd cats, also known as working with a legislature. I mean about getting all muscled up, or at least as muscled up as one can get at my advanced years. It is toward this end that I recently spent the better part of three days putting together a large, expensive and rather intimidating home gym in my garage. Oh, I should probably mention it was during the heat wave, when temperatures outside the garage were in the mid-90s. And no, the garage is not air conditioned. Now, when I call this machine intimidating, I am not exaggerating. It came in seven boxes, big ones. And heavy. Just moving them from the delivery truck to the garage added two inches to my upper arms.
Inside the boxes were confusing pieces of iron which, when assembled, would create one of the world’s finest home gyms. However, they were accompanied by instructions that went beyond confusing to inscrutable. One look at them had me wondering why I didn’t just get a Richard Simmons DVD instead. When did it become too much work for people to write instructions? Who decided that instead of put-this-here, put-that-there, tightenthe-bolt-instructions, we could do just as well with exploded drawings of the object to be assembled, accompanied by a note that said – I am not kidding – to be sure to do things in the right order, or the pieces wouldn’t fit properly? Let’s recap. In essence, I was being told to put things together in the right order, but that I would have to figure out for myself what the right order would be. Evidently, they’re real jokesters at the home gym factory. To make things even more entertaining, each box contained about 4,374 St. Anthony Pieces. That’s the name I give for the little doohickeys that are guaranteed to jump out of your hand and roll under a workbench or down a drain. I call them St. Anthony Pieces because I always
find myself reciting the prayer to St. Anthony of Padua: “St. Anthony, St. Anthony, please come down, something’s lost and can’t be found.” How many times did I recite the prayer? Let’s just say that for a while I had St. Anthony on speed dial. And as far as I know, he’s still out there looking for a couple of washers and a four-inch stove bolt. What I’m trying to say is it wasn’t easy. What with the heat, and the goofy directions, and occasional attacks of “Holy Moley, how am I going to pay for this thing?” it probably took me three times as long to build my gym as it would have taken a normal person. I think. If I ever meet a normal person I’ll ask. But nothing worth having comes easy, and I know my gym is worth having. I know I’ll feel better and, I hope, look better because of it. If I ever start using the thing, that is. Right now I’m resting. Building a gym is quite a workout. Like governing California. Mike Redmond is an author, journalist, humorist and speaker. You’re telling me the dishwasher doesn’t have a realignment cycle? HUMOR By Dick Wolfsie From the very beginning of our relationship, my wife Mary Ellen was determined to root out any potential male chauvinism on my part. If there is a little piglet in me, I have honestly tried to overcome it. It kills me to say this, but a strong marriage is based on equality. That’s why I let her rake leaves, grill ribs and do most of the driving. For three decades, I have also shared with my wife the chores of loading and unloading the dishwasher. I’ve hated every single second of this responsibility. I’d rather clean the toilet, poke a bees’ nest with a broom handle or clean out the gutters with a teaspoon. Last week, my wife informed me I was now forever relieved of dishwasher duty. “Just scrape the dishes and stack them in the sink,” she told me. “But why?” “You’re terrible at loading, and it seems to get worse by the day,” she said. “Ever wonder why when you unload dishes the next morning, everything you flung into the machine willy-nilly has miraculously lined up perfectly in the appropriate slots? Who do you think did that?”
“Well, it takes almost an hour to run a load of dishes and I hear a lot of odd noises, so I assumed a mechanical realignment was one of the wash cycles.” “You just toss the dishes in, any which way. What are you thinking?” “Mary Ellen, I load the dishwasher like I load our Maytag. I don’t put socks in one part of the washing machine, then my pants in another. Why would I do that with cups and saucers?” Mary Ellen says I’m getting progressively worse at unloading, as well. I simply dump the entire utensil holder into the kitchen drawer. Clanketyclank: mission accomplished. My wife has this odd notion that you should sort the knives, spoons and forks into their own compartments. She wants them separated – even before we set the table. What kind of a waste of time is that? Mary Ellen also thinks the soup bowls, salad plates and cups should be placed in the cupboard into matching individual stacks. Where’s the pizzazz in that architectural structure? She also says I’ve been messing up the inside of our fridge. Here again everything has its proper place. Who knew? So that’s why the mustard has been moving from the top shelf to
the fridge door. Why heads of lettuce have often crept south, ending up in this thing Mary Ellen says is called the “vegetable bin.” Why was I never informed of this accessory? Milk, I have learned, should always be on the top shelf. Jars of sauces and prepared foods have to go on the third shelf. That’s gotta be wrong, because when I was six, I’d swear the pickles were always staring me right in the face. Going eye to eye with Kosher dills goes back to the Old Testament. So, I am no longer permitted to load or unload the dishwasher. And I must leave my pickles, mustard and cream cheese on the counter so my wife can put them in their proper resting place. I may even have a shot at never doing laundry again. But I am not going to get complacent about my lack of accomplishments. There are beds not to be made and rugs not to be vacuumed. I’m very proud of myself. I’m doing the worst I can. Dick Wolfsie is an author, columnist, and speaker. Contact him at wolfsie@aol.com.

Revolutionizing a view for one local homeowner REMODELING By Larry Greene INITIAL SITUATION: This home, located on Morse Reservoir in Cicero, included the original smaller kitchen and several interior walls that blocked the view to the water. The homeowner wanted to completely update the kitchen and, most importantly, come up with a new floor plan eliminating walls to give them a direct view to the water. DESIGN PHASE: The challenge for the design team was to figure out if it was feasible to remove the interior walls that blocked the water view. A structural engineer determined that the interior walls could all be safely removed since they were all deemed to be non-load bearing. Finally the existing 8’ high ceiling was replaced with a higher tray ceiling designed to make the room feel more spacious. PROJECT SCHEDULE: The design phase, including the structural engineering, took place over five weeks. Several floor plans were presented. The final design also incorporated changes to the adjacent laundry/mud room. The construction phase spread out over approximately eight weeks. FINAL PRODUCT: The owner decided to upgrade to semicustom premium alder cabinets with a nutmeg stain covered with a light brown highlight. The new cabinetry included a custom 30” wide range hood and decorative glass doors above the sink. Some added features of the cabinetry included a corner Lazy Susan with no center rod and all wood carousels and a new microwave cabinet. The team also substituted drawers instead

of cabinet doors, upgraded to all plywood boxes and added a trash pullout. The new tile backsplash is a 4” x 4” Baoding cream quartz with framed medallions at the range and sink. New 3 cm. Verde Butterfly granite countertops for installed on the perimeter, island and mudroom areas. The island has an ogee edge, while the perimeter and mudroom have standard eased edge. Finally, the existing carpet and vinyl flooring was replaced with natural white
oak prefinished hardwood flooring in a mixed width. Larry Greene is owner of Case Handyman & Remodeling. You may e-mail him at lgreene@caseremodeling.com or call 846-2600. Visit www.caseremodeling.com for more information.

Planting trees in the fall is shady business GARDENING By Holly Lindzy The most enjoyable part of summer quite possibly is relaxing in the shade of a mighty maple. Temperatures can be up to 20 degrees cooler in the shade, and since I haven’t a tolerance for oppressive heat and blinding sunlight, I yearn for the shelter of a great shade tree. Cool shade isn’t the only benefit these trees offer. Trees also absorb noise, provide privacy, improve aesthetics and shelter wildlife. Lucky for we obsessed gardeners, the trees drop leaves that can be shredded and composted or used as valuable mulch. There is no end to the benefits a healthy shade tree can offer us. The key is finding the right one, planting it correctly and caring for it properly. And fall is a great time to plant a tree. A shade tree is one that will likely reach a mature height of 40 feet or more. A tree will usually reach its mature height in 20-25 years, if it is happy where it is planted. Many types of oak do very well in Central Indiana. White oak (ouercus alba) is a particularly great choice for a shade tree and it grows rather quickly to boot. Oaks, of course, have acorns, which may be of some concern to a reader or two, but I like
to think of them as food for the squirrels. You gotta love the squirrels! Maples top my list of favorite shade trees. The two best species, I think, being the red maple (acer rubrum) and the sugar maple (acer saccharum). Both have fabulous fall color, attractive shape and great hardiness. And how about that maple syrup, huh? Good stuff. One note of caution: steer clear of the silver maple (acer saccharinum) with its soft wood and multiple trunks, this tree is prone to splitting. It is also a prolific re-seeder, and it will have you yanking little maple trees out of your flowerbeds for ages. Unless you like that kind of stuff. For more information on tree selection and planting, contact the Hamilton County Purdue Extension office at 317.776.0854. There you will find a wealth of resources about planting in our region and before long, you’ll have it made in the shade, too.
