ART OF THE AUTO

» WHAT’S IT WORTH?

Most car collectors play it close to the vest when it comes to revealing how much they’ve plowed into their hobby. Some of the older, pre-World War II classics reach six figures or more. If you’re looking to buy one, look elsewhere. Collectors are discouraged from posting “for sale” signs on their vehicles.

Along Main Street from Woody’s Library Restaurant east of Range Line Road past the Monon Trail to the traffic circle. Drivers will still be able to use the traffic circle.

CAR COLLECTERS AND THEIR PRIZED POSSESSIONS WILL BE ON FULL DISPLAY THIS WEEKEND AT THE SECOND-ANNUAL CARMEL ARTOMOBILIA By Zach Dunkin Current in Carmel

Traffic will be at a standstill Sept. 5 on Main Street in Carmel, and you can blame a couple of car-crazy Carmel residents for that. John Leonard’s immaculate 1996 Porsche Carrera 4S (pictured on cover) and nearly 150 pristine automotive classics will make a parking lot of the Arts & Design District for the second-annual Carmel Artomobilia. At the suggestion of Carmel art gallery owner Evan Lurie, and in harmony with the theme of the district, Carmel’s Leonard and Robert Brummett, and Andrew Lee, a Britishman living in Irvington, united with Carmel to stage the auto extravaganza. Brummett and Lee previously had worked together on the annual Concours D’Elegance show in Indianapolis, before that event closed in the face of an auto industry downturn. “When that ended, we started talking about starting another show ourselves,” said Leonard, a member of the exhibitor recruitment and planning committee for the event. “At about the same time, the city of Carmel decided that a show like this would be a great way to promote the Arts & Design District. They offered us a great location.” Last year’s event drew 110 entrants and a crowd of 10,000. This year’s entry list increased to 140. “Indianapolis and Indiana have such a rich history in the auto manufacturing industry, so it’s only natural that we

celebrate that tradition with a car show like this,” said Lee. One hundred years ago, there were nearly a dozen automobile manufacturers based in Indianapolis and another 30 in the rest of the state. Many of the machines on display Saturday are from an era when styles changed every year and before the days of copycat, computer-drawn patterns. “There’s a certain romanticism inherent to automobiles, and it’s different for different people,” said Brummett. “At these types of car shows, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This show will have something for everyone and lots of surprises in between.” For example, guests will see everything from Ralph Willoughby’s 1929 Model A Ford to Mike Green’s 2008 599 GTB. Both live in Carmel. Green also is showing his 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO. They will see a rare 1934 DeSoto Airflow that was very modern for its time. Carmel’s Bill Clary will join Willoughby in the Model A class with his 1930 Ford Coupe. Another Carmel resident, Dr. John Abrams, is showing off his 1953 Chevy Sedan. So, why set up on Main Street? It’s trendy. “Urbantype” car shows like this are becoming as popular as the sprawling shows on large green spaces. “The feedback that we’ve gotten from our exhibitors is that they like the Artomobilia show because of its smaller footprint,” said Brummett. “These types of shows are becoming more popular because of the compactness and the convenience.”

Images from last year’s first Artomobilia

For a show like this, cars will be judged on aesthetics. But Brummet says as this show grows in quality and the content to the level of a Concours D’Eleagance show, judging is based on a points system that includes all kinds of factors like originality, authenticity, etc.

It is our opinion that a longer school day should be considered to address an array of issues. A longer day would allow for a significantly shortened school year (or at least a rearranged one). The lengthened day could effectively allow teachers to see a reduction of days on the job, while still enjoying the same salary. School corporations could save the enormous wasted expense of excessive transportation. State law restricts the number of instructional days and sets out the number of instructional hours per day. Younger kids get five hours, and the older ones get six. Is

there a better, more affordable way? With summer vacation ending for kids barely into the second week of August and Indiana’s national rankings near the bottom of the heap, it seems that the state standard of short but abundant days deserves review. Adding even limited S4-3 instruction time would result in not days, but weeks of added vacation, classroom time, sport, music or other activity. Longer days create options for year-round and other innovative programs. Is an 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. school day as short as a two-month summer?

HOMESCHOOLERS AT NO DISADVANTAGE Editor: I read with dismay Danielle Wislon’s article titled “Why I am against Homeschooling” (Aug. 18). It seems rather odd in today’s time to continue to believe that traditional schooling is the only way to become educationally and socially successful. It is interesting to hear that most homeschooled children are rarely well adjusted socially. In today’s society, many home school programs have co-op classes, field trips and sports. I have several friends who homeschool, and their children are not only receiving an excellent education, but they are busier then

many of their friends who attend traditional schools. The fact is, many of these parents are educated individuals and do an excellent job teaching. I know several who have actually hired teachers to do the schooling, myself included. Maybe we should just peak our heads out from under the turtle shell and look around at the world, embrace what we do not understand and research what we do not know before we speak. Daris Blickman Carmel

HEALTHCARE REFORM: GET IT RIGHT Editor: Boy did you folks goof! You’re right, “Constituents are confused and nervous” about healthcare reform (“A Question for Our President,” Aug. 18), and you are apparently the most confused of all. From the beginning, the Obama plan has called for universal coverage. Such coverage would include all the same plans Americans already have. Quite simply, the answer to your question (“Mr. President, will you, all members of your administration and all federal government employees be included in your new health plan?”) is of course “yes.” After all, “universal coverage” means everyone is covered.

Perhaps by “new health plan” you were referring to the much debated “public option.” Currently, federal employees and the president are covered by the Federal Employees Health Benefits program – a plan so well-liked that members of congress have also chosen it for themselves and their families The FEHB and similar plans have been considered for the public option. Does Obama like his coverage under the FEHB? Perhaps. But at least if the public option is passed, the rest of us will finally enjoy the kind of choices Congress and the president have enjoyed for years. Jill Bainbridge Westfield

FEINSTEiN TO RETURN TO AREA, PERFORM IN WESTFIELD By Arika Herron Current in Carmel

In his latest endeavor to protect the Great American Songbook, Michael Feinstein will perform at the Westfield High School auditorium Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m., accompanied by the Carmel Symphony FEINSTEIN Orchestra. “This is the single most major thing for us that has happened in the past several years,” Alan Davis, President and CEO of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra, said. “To work with a performer of the caliber of Michael Feinstein is one of those opportunities that musicians just love to be associated with.” The one-night-only show will benefit the Michael Feinstein Foundation and the Carmel Symphony Orchestra. The Michael Feinstein Foundation will be headquartered at the new Regional Performing Arts Center, which Davis hopes will lead to further collaborations with Feinstein and others performing at the Performing Arts Center.

“For us to have the opportunity to call a facility like that home is difficult to put into words,” Davis said. The Michael Feinstein Foundation’s mission is to preserve the Great American Songbook – the body of work by legends like George Gershwin, Cole DAVIS Porter, Irving Berlin, Rogers and Hammerstein and more. Feinstein, the four-time Grammy nominee, got his start 25 years ago with a Broadway debut in “Isn’t it Romantic?” Feinstein has since recorded 23 studio albums and his 24th, The Sinatra Project, is due out Sept. 2. “The concert is a cross section of things from (The Sinatra Project) and other things (Feinstein) has done,” Dr. David Bowden, Carmel Symphony Orchestra Artistic Director, said. Three ticket packages are available for reserve. Live, pre-show entertainment, appetizers and refreshments are provided. Cocktail attire is encouraged.

NOW BETTER THAN THEN By Brandie Bohney Current in Carmel

There are quite a few hilarious blogs out there on the World Wide Web. One of my recent favorite discoveries is called “There, I Fixed It” (www. thereifixedit.com). Unlike most of the blogs I follow – and there are quite a few – There, I Fixed It has virtually no commentary; the pictures speak for themselves. The writer, Ms. Fixit, just adds a witty headline to each entry, highlighting a worse-thanthe-previous repair disaster. Recently, though, her headline was, “No Worse Then Hot Metal.” I figured that this would be my first time commenting in order to gently correct the grammatical error. Much to my surprise, though, I had been beaten to that punch by dozens of other commenters. Ms. Fixit even chimed in, saying she would leave the title as-is so the comments would make sense. At this point, I know I have a split audience. Many of you are groaning about the incorrect substitution. Others of you have been staring at the headline wondering if I’m completely nuts, because there is no error as far as you can tell. The problem is then being used in place of than. Then is a point-in-time reference, most frequently used as an adverb: Blake must repair his bike first, and then he can ride it.

I know I have something to do between now and then.

On the other hand, than is word of comparison, almost always a conjunction:

I like Dr. Pepper better than Diet Dr. Pepper. He had no choice other than to take the quiz.

The issue here isn’t meaning, as the meanings and uses of these words are very different. I believe the issue is one of Midwestern pronunciation. Both words are often pronounced with the short “e” sound here in Indiana and some of our surrounding states, and that means if you don’t already know the difference, writing then instead of than may simply be a product of confusion based on pronunciation. I’ve even seen than written as thin because the writer thought the short “i” sound was correct. Yoikes. So if you’re part of the group that wondered, “Error? What error?” in the example above, focus on precise pronunciation for a while. Then you’ll be doing better than many others. If you stand sideways against a wall and the shoulder pad touches the wall before your arm does, the suit is too big. Chest: You should be able to easily button the jacket without it straining. Conversely, there shouldn’t be too much space between the button and your chest—no more than a fist’s worth. ecorating a home is as emotional as it is visual and functional. If you can identify that which is important to you and warms your heart, you will be well on the path to a beautifully appointed home. Vicky Earley This list of “a Design few of my favorite things” in decorating just might help inspire you to identify a few of your favorite things! 1.

I always like to begin with quality upholstery. The good stuff just can’t be faked.

2.

I love color. Color can make all the difference in a room.

3.

I love black rooms almost as much as I love the looks on clients’ faces when I suggest a black room!

4.

I like imperfection. Life is not perfect.

5.

I love rooms that are original. I remember walking into a kitchen a number of years ago that was painted an amazing shade of mango. I have not forgotten the color or the

I really like to break the rules! Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something because “it breaks a decorating rule.”

7.

I’m a big believer in high-low decorating: quality items carefully paired with less expensive pieces. If done properly, the lower quality items will be elevated.

8.

Old books are my longtime favorite decorating tool. They fill a room up with warmth and humanity in a way nothing else can. Books can be stacked, lined up, tied together, painted and propped open. The can be used for texture, color and height. Books are a decorating workhorse!

9.

I love lamps that decorate a room like jewelry. They are the sparkle and surprise that can elevate a room from beautiful to stunning!

10. I love original art, even if the artist is a 6-year-old. Hand-painted pieces bring soul to the room, while framed prints simply occupy space. 11. I really prefer that a room feature furnishings that don’t “match.” Flow is good; match is bad. Vicky Earley is the principal designer for Artichoke Designs in downtown Carmel. three Style tipS for fall By: Alex Paredes Updating your classic look can be difficult at times, and with so many “don’ts” it is easy to miss the mark. Salon01 stylists are on hand to give you some tips on how to make sure you stay away from the “don’ts” of fashion this season. Here are 3 quick fashion tips that will help make your old classics look new! 1. Bring back your tights from spring. Any “jewel” tone tights will make the outfit feel just right for fall.

2. Bib necklaces are perfect for a dramatic addition to any look. Whether at the office or out to dinner, these necklaces will help you stand out. 3. Pull out your clutch bags from last year. Update them for this season by adding a chain strap to the bag. This will keep your bag looking current and add extra style. Stop in Salon 01 to check out the latest accessories and handbags in our boutique to help complete your new fall look.

Teal is back! By: Alex Paredes A big color to watch out for this fall is teal. Teal has been a great color for many seasons and its no surprise its here again. Finding the right hue for your skin tone is easy: for the darker skin a lighter shade of teal compliments your features, and for those whose skin has a lighter tone, a darker teal will work best. As for accessories it can all depend on your mood, teal looks best when it’s paired with neutral colors such as brown, gold, and deep dark grays.

any of us have taken Vitamin C when we catch a cold because of its protective effects on our immune system. But did you know adding Vitamin C topically as part of your daily skin-care regimen can also have protective benefits against the signs of aging? Vitamin C, also known by its scientific name, ascorbic acid, is a reducing agent. This means the Vitamin C molecule can donate hydrogen to unstable Dr. Angela Corea ClarityMD molecules, thereby protecting your body and skin from those unstable, harmful compounds known as free radicals, which are thought to age our skin For example, lemon juice is often added to sliced apples to prevent browning. Vitamin C prevents the damaging oxidation process of the apple when exposed to air. The same goes for your skin Vitamin C is also essential for our DNA to produce collagen. Collagen helps our skin cells form and organize correctly. We

start losing collagen in our 20s, which leads to skin laxity and wrinkles. Check your labels! It is essential for Vitamin C to be in a stable, active form with adequate absorption, pH levels, and concentration in order to be advantageous. Stable forms of Vitamin C include magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, L-ascorbic acid, ascorbyl glucosamine and ascorbic acid. Vitamin C comes in numerous strengths, but should be less than 3.5 pH and between a 15 to 20 percent concentration. Benefits of topical Vitamin C in a daily skin care regimen: • Potent antioxidant, neutralizes free radicals • Protects skin cells and delays tumor formation from damaging UV rays • Necessary for collagen formation to delay skin laxity and wrinkles • Evens skin tone, by reducing sun spots, especially when paired with hydroquinone therapy • Wound collagen organization, skin repair • Enhances subsequent cosmetic procedures Dr. Angela T. BOOK REVIEW

Lili Marlene

By Liel Leibovitz In the early days of Radio Belgrade, the station added a song to the rotation. “Song of a Young Sentry” or “Lili Marlene,” as it came to be known, proved to be so popular, particularly with soldiers, that the station was flooded with thousands of letters each week. This resulted in the station playing it every evening at 9:57 p.m. just before the 10 p.m. Nazi programming. This book reveals the magic the song possessed that caused soldiers on both sides of the battle lines to put aside their weapons for three minutes each night while it transported them to other places. The story of Lili Marlene entwines the lives and talents of three people: Hans Leip, the poet who wrote the lyrics; Norbert Schultze, who wrote the music; and Lale Andersen, the woman whose husky, sensuous voice brought it to life.

y oldest son and I went to the State Fair last week. As the heat grew and we became weary, we happened upon air conditioning in a pavilion. When we entered, we noticed a large crowd clapping and hollering. Curiously, we approached a carnie yelling, “Last chance, anyone else to give it a try?” Feeling inspired, I registered my name, received a seed, and was briefed on the Chef Michael rules. On stage, I Vlasich put my chest out, Culinary Explorer my shoulders back, and with one mighty thrust, let it fly. There was a gasp from the crowd as a little black projectile flew through the air like a graceful, aerodynamic, supersonic jet. The officials looked in disbelief, asking, “Are you for real? Are you a professional?” Taking my bow, I responded that I had never spit a seed before in my life. They went through the awards, finally coming to second place, Michael Vlasich, at 29 feet, 9 inches. All the way home we talked about the

potential decisions: Go pro? Quit and hit the fair circuit? Build a practice field in the backyard? I had so many thoughts and delusions of grandeur. After a day of wearing my ribbon around the house and neighborhood, I decided perhaps I should stick with something I knew more about – cooking. Insisting on a penance, my wife made me cook dinner the next seven days. Chef Michael R. Vlasich, CEC, AAC, is a Carmel resident and the executive chef at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown. are you inviting fleas into your home?

DISPATCH PILL POCKETS – Looking for an easy way to give your dog or cat a pill? If traditional pilling and methods such as putting the pill in cheese or meat haven’t worked, a product called Pill Pockets is designed specifically for medicating animals easily. Flavored like chicken, beef, or salmon, Pill Pockets have an opening in which you insert the pill and then cover to seal. Many pet owners swear by them. Cost varies by size and flavor, and they can be purchased at several online and storefront retailers.

The annual battle between fleas and ticks and your pet has begun. If you’re taking sides, then bet on the fleas, unless your dog has the right ammunition to win the war. Mid-summer problems range from a flea-infested household where carpets, bedding and sofas provide adequate breeding grounds for the rapidly multiplying, blood-drawing parasite. Studies show 10 fleas can reproduce to 250,000 in 30 days providing, breeding conditions are right – warm and moist. While outside, pets may suffer more; cats and dogs that are always kept inside are not free of fleas. Excessive scratching and lumps in your pet’s fur coat are warning signs for fleas and ticks. Also, white specks observed where your pet sleeps could be flea eggs;

Sedona is a 1-year-old female white with chocolate spots American pit bull terrier mix. Sedona is a very sweet and wellmannered girl who has lots of personality. She is a petite girl, and she enjoys cuddling and thinks she is a lap dog. Sedona loves to play with toys; she could play fetch for hours. She is very intelligent and would appreciate going to obedience training to expand her skill set. Sedona does like to have her way, and like most people who know what they want, she can be a little demanding at times.

Hope is a 3-year-old female tabby DSH. Hope is a happy little girl who is good with children and enjoys all the attention she can get. She arrived at the shelter when her previous owners no longer wanted her, but they did say she would probably prefer a home where she can be the only pet. She is spayed and litter-box trained, and her bags are still packed. For more information on these and other animals at the Humane Society, call 317-7734974 or go to www.hamiltonhumane.com.

black flecks, flea feces. Blood on a dog’s skin is another indicator. Don’t wait for warning signs; start now with a flea and tick prevention program. Many new products interrupt the flea’s life cycle, preventing it from bleeding. Some are pills; others six-month shots or injections; and still others come in liquid forms meant to be applied directly to a pet’s skin each month. While these new products have definitely expanded fleacontrol choices, no product alone is perfect. For instance, some of the new flea control products halt the parasite’s life cycle, yet fail to kill the existing flea. Some of the new flea control products do not protect against ticks. And many are different for dogs and cats. Dogs and cats housed outside can benefit from having cedar chips in their bedding. It, too, has an aroma that repels fleas and ticks. This is one of the only methods

of ridding newborn puppies and kittens from parasites, as insecticides can cause serious health problems for animals under four weeks of age. Supplementing the brewer’s yeast and cedar chips with products like flea collars and powders that contain insecticides help mature pets during the worst part of the parasite season. But if your household pets are already heavily infested with fleas and ticks, other measures should be taken. Lawns can be powdered or sprayed with water-soluble insecticides. There are powders and sprays safe for inside your house, too. For your pet, there are sprays, shampoos, and dips – chemical solutions that remain on your pet’s fur for several weeks – to kill the unwanted parasites. Article courtesy of Petland, Carmel. he other day, my wife called me from her office. Mary Ellen seldom calls to just chat. Usually it’s something that requires my immediate attention – something only a man can handle. Something that will infuse me with a sense of my own masculinity. “Dick, one of the tires on my car needs air. I need you to come over to my office and deal with this.” “Mary Ellen, I don’t know why you can’t take care Dick Wolfsie of this yourself. If I Humor come over, I have to drive to your office, leave my car, take your car to the service station, return your car, then get mine and drive it home.” “Heavens! I had no idea getting air in a tire was so complicated.” It’s this kind of response that usually leads me to take the dog for a long walk to ponder the many layers of that remark. If it’s raining, I just slam my head against the aluminum siding. I continued: “It’s not complicated, Mary Ellen. It’s very easy. What’s complicated is that you want me to do it for you.” “Well, isn’t that just like you to make things more difficult?” When I reached her office, my wife was waiting outside. “Dick, I know you are in a rush, so I’ll go with you and help.” “Help me? You can’t help me. I’m putting air in a tire. That requires one person, one hose, one tire. How could you possibly help me?” “Look, the more I think about this, the more I think we should call someone.” And there’s the expression that drives me up the wall. The actual translation is: “I want this done right; you will mess it up; it will cost us more money; so find someone who knows what he’s doing.” Mary Ellen has absolutely no respect for my “fix-it” abilities, but she does have tremendous faith in my Rolodex. She is convinced that while I am personally inept, I know everyone in Indianapolis because of my media connections over the years. A few years back there were raccoons in our chimney. Mary Ellen knew I couldn’t handle it myself: “Call someone. See you at dinner. Have a great day.” “Wait a second. I don’t know anyone who knows how to get raccoons out of a chimney.” “Don’t be silly. You know everyone. Don’t you know someone who has 2,700 mousetraps in his house?” “Yes.”

“And don’t you know someone who collects manhole covers?” “Three hundred of them. What a nice lady. And so strong.” “And I bet you know someone who eats earthworms for their daily diet.” “Actually, I’m friends with the entire family.” “So, Dick, can you see why it’s hard to believe that you do not know someone who knows how to rid a chimney of raccoons?” She had a point. Over the years,

I’ve probably met just about every offbeat person in central Indiana, but the raccoon problem had me stumped. In my old Rolodex, I did find a woman with 4,000 ceramic frogs in her living room, an expert on the history of lawn sprinklers, a guy with 12,000 sugar packets, and a 6-year-old kid who can name every NASCAR driver who has ever competed in the Brickyard 400. I finally did find someone to help us with the raccoons. But on this day, I felt

totally competent to handle the tire situation. I got into Mary Ellen’s car, drove to the service station, filled the tire, returned the car to her office and then drove my car home. All by myself. After I pulled into the garage, I started banging my head against the aluminum siding. After all that work, I was too tired to walk the dog. . Dick Wolfsie is an author, columnist, and speaker.
