Fishers neighborhoods getting resurfacing work By Sam Elliott “ bP\/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ Approximately 5.2 miles of Fishers neighborhood roads will be resurfaced in the coming months. ROADS The Fishers Dept. of Engineering has awarded the resurfacing contract and work is expected to begin soon and be completed by the beginning of July. We’ve identified two specific areas we felt were needing a lot of attention, Assistant Director of Engineering Jason Taylor said. “One area is the Gray Eagle subdivision and then the other area is the various subdivisions located near Harrison Thompson Park. The Gray Eagle area roads to receive work include Gray Eagle Drive and Duval Drive as well as streets to the east of Gray Eagle Drive within Links at Gray Eagle and to the west of Gray Eagle Drive within Woods at Gray Eagle. Other roads slated for resurfacing include Lantern Road in the Cottingham Estates subdivision, Harrison Parkway in the Harrison Green subdivision, Conner Knoll Parkway in the Conner Knoll, Harrison Green and Harrison Woods subdivisions and New Britton Road in the New Britton Commercial Park. “In addition, we make sure if any sidewalks or curb ramps aren’t up to (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance, we’ll update those as part of

the project, Taylor said. The city uses an industry-wide standard of rating its roads called PASER, which scores streets on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being best. “These were in the lower range, Taylor said. “Some of them were in the 3s and some of them were in 4s. We do everything we can to not let a road get to a 1 or 2. No roads will ever be fully closed as part of the resurfacing work, although workers will need to establish lane restrictions at certain times. The Fishers Police Dept. is currently investigating an attempted robbery and CRIME asking the public for any information regarding the identity of one of the suspects. The attempted robbery occurred March 26 at the Kroger located at 7272 Fishers Crossing Dr. near the corner of 116th Street and Allisonville Road. According to FPD officials citing Kroger employees and collected evidence, a juvenile male gave the store’s pharmacist a note indicating his intent to rob the pharmacy of prescription medication. The pharmacist complied and gave the suspect some medication, but the juvenile was detained by other employees as he attempted to flee the store. FPD officers took the suspect into custody, and he was transported to the Hamilton Co. Juvenile Detention Center. Detectives believe a second suspect was involved in the attempted robbery, and are

We’re also coordinating with the (homeowners’ associations) on this, so they’re well aware and can push out notifications to their residents, and we’ve required the contractor to put door hangers on residents’ doors to let them know that there’s going to be work going on.

A changing world Commentary by Heather Kestian When my son and I recently woke up to news of terror attacks in Europe, FAMILY I turned on the news not knowing what had happened. There it was: blood, mangled steel, death. And then there were questions from an 8-year-old. What happened? Are people going to be OK? Why would someone do that? Excellent questions, kid. I wish I had easy answers, or, at the very least, an answer. It is a changing world. A world that is harder and more complicated than I remember from when I was growing up. A world of ideas that is increasingly uncompromising. We talked during breakfast about how some people do not like the way other people live. Together, over two bowls of cereal and milk, we surmised that it all comes down to perspective. Can you understand why someone might act in such a way? The question is not whether we agree, but can you see the perspective? Whatever the reasons are for those ac-
tions, we have to be willing to see a situation from another’s perspective. In seeing the situation differently, we might be able to right a wrong, or explain our own actions to the other side. What if we felt injustice? Would we want someone else to be able to see our perspective? Over our breakfast, we decided that seeing the world from someone else’s viewpoint was truly a gift. My son and I resolved to see things differently that day. We agreed to spend the day seeing situations from the other side. At the end of the day, before bedtime, we decided that there were fewer hurt feelings when we started from a place of understanding and not proving our own point. If only we could figure out how to share perspective with everyone, then maybe we could change the world. Heather Kestian is a Fishers resident and mother. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism, as well as a master’s degree in education. Her family moved to Fishers in 2010.

LoKe hosting Bicycle Recycle Day By Sam Elliott “ bP\/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ Back for its second year after a successful first event in 2015, local bike shop LoKe Bicycles is hosting its Bicycle EVENT Recycle Day April 16 at Brooks School Park. Jim Moffitt has owned and operated LoKe Bicycles, at 11640 Brooks School Rd., Suite 100, for approximately two and a half years. Last year’s first Bicycle Recycle event came about from community members asking him what they could do with their old, unused or unwanted bikes. “I’d tell people, ‘Well, we’ll take it, and I’ll give it to Circle City Relief through Conquest Cycling,’ Moffitt said. Moffitt knew people involved with Conquest Cycling, a charity organization formed out of Grace Church that works with Indianapolisbased Circle City Relief. “Circle City Relief is a program to help homeless and people less fortunate. Every third Sunday they go downtown and give clothing and food and just try to help people, Moffitt said. “Conquest Cycling is part of that and they give bicycles to homeless people and
people less fortunate.â€? Moffitt and volunteers will collect donated bicycles from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 16 on the north side of the playground at Brooks School Park, 11780 Brooks School Rd. “It doesn’t matter the condition of the bike,â€? Moffitt said. “Some of them are like brand new and just hadn’t been ridden, and some of them have been ridden into the ground‌ If it’s a bike that’s in really bad condition, we’ll take the parts off it and use the parts.â€? Last year’s event brought in approximately 175 bikes. “Over the course of the last year, we’ve probably done over 300 bikes,â€? Moffitt said. “I collect them all throughout the year.â€? The event’s bicycle-related activities also include a a bike rodeo at 11 a.m., a child bicycle safety clinic at 1 p.m. put on by a Fishers Police Dept. officer, free helmet fittings and bicycle safety checks where residents can have their bike inspected by LoKe mechanics. “We’ll put air in the tires, or if the bike needs more work done, I’ll make some 10 percent off coupons for here at the shop,â€? By Amanda Foust “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]cX]UXbWTab R^\ Sounds of Hope, a traveling community orchestra, has begun filling Hamilton Co. and beyond with music that ORCHESTRA positively inspires. Caroline Ahn, a professional composer and professor at Anderson University, recently created Sounds of Hope after dreaming of how she could combine her love for music and service. “I wanted to show my children differences in the people around them and teach them how to serve their communities, Ahn said. Last October, Ahn, her husband and a friend came together to form the small performance group that has now grown to 20 young people who share a love for music. Some play in the orchestra and some sing, but all enjoy using their talents to make a difference. “We are all so proud of these children that are using their talent to make positive impacts in our community, said Dr. Soong Ahn, Caroline’s husband and a Sounds of Hope board member. The group has rehearsals and events once each month to not overwhelm schedules. The goal is to grow into several groups serving at

Who’s to blame? Commentary by Amy L. Stewart Those of us who work with people in conflict are accustomed to encounterLIFE ing a lot of blame. As I’ve become more curious about that, I’ve noticed a lot of blame everywhere. It’s one of our favorite pastimes. But I’ve noticed something else. My happiest clients, no matter how great their hardships, aren’t prone to blame. Like an addictive drug that feels good at first but ends up causing misery, blame is a sneaky habit. Blame makes us feel tough. “There’s nothing wrong with me. It’s their fault. But look deeper, and you see that blame actually weakens us. When we blame someone, we give them our power with the same breath. It’s all about them. We concede that they are in charge. We are helpless, a mere victim. We don’t control our experience; they do. And since we can’t change them, but only ourselves, that’s how things likely will stay. There’s another sneaky thing about blame. When we blame, we not only surrender our power, but we create the seductive illusion that we have no responsibility. This
is blame’s hook. “It wasn’t me. They did it. Ugh, how we hate being responsible. But the truth is, we are responsible, whether we own up to it or not. Finally, blame disconnects us. It’s us versus them. It destroys any possibility of the connection or compassion that are needed to solve our conflicts. The alternative isn’t to blame ourselves. The alternative is to enjoy a nourishing cup of our own responsibility and power. Try this: The next time you blame “them, just stop. Instead, ask yourself: What did I do? What can I do differently? Can I accept this without blaming? Why does this bother me? What can I do about that? I know, it’s uncomfortable at first. Recovery takes time and practice. But I promise you’ll be happier clean. Blame me.

Conner Prairie unveils new, reimagined Conner House exhibit By Sam Elliott “ bP\/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ There wouldn’t be a Conner Prairie museum park today without the William Conner of the 1800s — the fur trader who first came to Central COVER STORY Indiana in 1800 and went on to play a pivotal role in the founding of Hamilton Co. His home, built in 1823, is believed to be one of the first brick buildings built in Central Indiana — and now visitors to Conner Prairie can experience it in a whole new way. As an official Indiana Bicentennial Legacy project, the Conner House exhibit has been reimagined to provide guests a more interactive and engaging experience as they learn about the area’s history and the Conners’ family life. “Conner Prairie continues to open doors to new ways to inspire curiosity and foster learning about Indiana's past by providing engaging, individualized and unique experiences, President and CEO Norman Burns told the assembled crowd the night the new Conner House was unveiled March 23. “Obviously a project like this you can't do without a team of people that really get behind the project, both donors and staff and others involved. The involved staff includes Brian Mancuso, Conner Prairie’s director of exhibits. “This was about a two-year process, he said. “We really wanted to revamp this house, which is our core. This is why we're here. We're here because of the Conner House. Eli Lily bought this to then grow from. We really wanted to kind of revisit it for the bicentennial to add different kinds of experiences, a little bit more modern experiences, and change it from a good domestic story where you'd walk through and say, 'Oh that's a lovely chair,' or, 'That's a lovely couch,' to different topics and a little bit more complex topics — in the guest room, for example, we're talking about William Conner's family life, which was very complex and kind of heralded the shift in Indiana at that time. We explored different sets of topics in each room and that's something we haven't done before. Topics throughout the house’s kitchen and groundlevel rooms plus upstairs bedrooms can be explored through a collection of new interactive displays, and missing throughout the home are mainstays of many
other museums — “do not touchâ€? signs. “I like that we've peppered objects throughout so they're touchable,â€? Mancuso said. “Conner Prairie is all about touch, all about interacting with things. In the Conner House, we decided to add in a little bit of media to bring people in, too.â€? “Everything in the house, if it’s not under glass, it’s a reproduction, and you can touch it and pick it up, and we’re happy about that,â€? added Kim McCann, Conner Prairie’s assistant manager of interpretation. “I think there's a lot of discussion in the museum world right now about the death of the historic home. Many historic homes across the world are closing because people have lost interest, and they kind of find it stuffy and boring. So what we've done is we've changed the Conner House in a way we hope excites people ‌ I think it allows us to tell more of the story, more layers of the William Conner story, than we were able to tell before.â€? For more, visit ConnerPrairie.org.

BRICK BY BRICK The way the Conner House sits on the Conner Prairie property means guests’ first view of the building is actually of the rear of the house. The true front of the home was positioned facing down a large hill leading to the White River, which would bring travelers to the area in the 1800s. So William Conner designed his home to look more appealing — and give more of an appearance of wealth — from that side.
The Conner House offers visitors a look inside William Conner’s life, which was spent among both the Native American and white communities of Central Indiana.
“On the front of the Conner House, the way the bricks are laid out is called a Flemish bond. Every other layer of brick is the side of a brick and then the end of a brick — that means it takes a lot of bricks,â€? Kim McCann, Conner Prairie’s assistant manager of interpretation, said. “The walls are four bricks thick on the exterior, too. It's a lot of bricks ‌ On the back of the house, the bricks are laid in the common bond. It's a non-fancy layout for bricks that takes far fewer bricks, and therefore costs far less. “So William Conner was very calculating and made a choice to put a very fancy bond, which puts forth the idea that he had a lot of money, on the front of this house,â€? she added. “The back of the house was where workers would enter, or someone not as important as a traveler or dignitary.â€?
The Conner House underwent a restoration in 1934. (Submitted photo)

Opening doors for our readers
As you might know, we use independent marketplace research at Current Publishing to determine what our content should be. The most recent round of research has been completed by SMARI, Inc., and the research firm treated us to something of an executive summary last week. While there is much to dig through, we learned, among other things, that Current is reaching a vast audience, approval exceeds 90 percent and readers want involvement. Because of that high level of interest, we are opening the door to readers that would like to participate in this column. As soon as we’re able, we would like to retitle this tome, now in its 10th year, Roses and Thorns. The idea is to have you and others tell everyone who or what in the community should get a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down and why. It would be a few words about a good deed done, or a few on something that takes issue with, for example, municipal infrastructure. Given the column’s space limitations, we would edit for length. The broader idea is to provide you and your fellow readers with an outlet, involve you more and maybe bring light to something that otherwise would not have been noticed. “ “ “ We’re proud to support the annual Friends of Chaucie’s Place Breakfast at Ritz Charles in Carmel on April 27, and we hope you will, too. It’s a 7 a.m.-to-9 a.m. fundraiser, and we always learn something. Chaucie’s Place, you might know, is a child advocacy organization that focuses on the prevention of child sexual abuse and youth suicide. Ticket ($10) may be purchased at chauciesplace.org. Commentary by Danielle Wilson
Ben Franklin Commentary by Terry Anker Sir Thomas Browne, an English physician and theologian is quoted in 1642 as saying, “But how shall we expect charity towards others, when we are uncharitable to ourselves? ‘Charity begins at home,’ is the voice of the world. Like most aphorisms, this holds mostly truth but leaves a gap or two in understanding (perhaps because of its intentionally concise nature). What is home? We’d all mostly support our own families. Perhaps, we’d help a neighbor – or a neighborhood. But, when do we imagine other humans to not be of our tribe? Is it a city line, a national boundary or a continental gap? My bride and I took to support the newly announced Ben Franklin Funds designed to support The Indianapolis Foundation in celebrating its centenary year. Following the lead of the American statesman who left small gifts for a pair of nascent colonial cities that, thanks to compound interest, matured into a big fund with even bigger
philanthropic impact. In a nutshell, The Indianapolis Foundation has asked that 1,000 people donate $100 and 100 people donate $1,000 to generate $200,000,000 in 2016. To start the party early, the Evening of 100 Dinners, June 15 or June 23, will bring together these donors to imagine a future. To give, join or host a dinner, or to learn more about the time-capsule, check out www.bein2016.org/bff/. One hundred years ago, Indianapolis did not include most of what it is today. A century from now, it might be bigger, or smaller, or gone entirely. Yet, even as we watch our own children grow towards a future that we will never see, I am optimistic that our little investment will stand as a beacon to future Hoosiers about the hope that we hold for them and our bit of earth today. QUOTE OF THE WEEK We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid. ° 1T]YP\X] 5aP]Z[X]
Last night I was hanging out with two of my sisters flipping through channels. We ended up on “Magic Mike XXLâ€? HUMOR and began a long conversation about the many different sequels that suck. (We strongly differed on “Pitch Perfect,â€? by the way, but that’s a whole ‘nother column.) After a while I remembered that my almost-15-year-old son was sitting right next to me, listening to us ramble but also half-heartedly watching a stripper movie. Rated R of course, and even though the volume was barely loud enough to hear (this movie is so not about dialogue!), it occurred to me that it was highly inappropriate for a freshman in high school. Then I realized that two nights ago I had allowed his twin to watch another adults-only movie, “Sisters,â€? and am seriously considering letting her attend the very risquĂŠ “Book of Mormon.â€? I’ve even started swearing in front of them. What. Is. Wrong. With. Me. Seriously? Where did that Mother of the Year go? As I expressed these views with my younger sisters, one confessed that she had accidentally taken her fourth and sixth graders to “Deadpool,â€? the exact opposite of a kid-friendly Marvel movie, and the other said her 3-year-old twins’ favorite is the PG-13 “Avatar.â€? We all agreed that we are terrible mothers. The thing is, we really just don’t care anymore. After having more than one child, it becomes too exhausting to monitor every TV show, radio program and/or book they consume. I think eventually parents reach their maximums on the censorship allotment that they’re given at the hospital (along with those crazy mesh underwear), and decide it’s not as big a deal as it once was. Plus, I actually trust my kids to make good decisions on their entertainment options, and if nothing else, those choices can lead to important conversations. Last night for example, one scene lead to a wonderful recollection of taking his great-grandmothers to a Chippendale show. The point is, eventually, you have to step back and hope you’ve done enough. If they choose “Archer,â€? at least it’s clever. Peace out.

After Mary Ellen returned from a recent solo trip, she asked if I had kept to my diet while she was away. I admitted going HUMOR to three all-you-can-eat buffets, and I gorged because everything looked so good. That was the wrong thing to say. She’d just read an article claiming that one way to lose weight is to eat your meals while blindfolded. In several experiments, people who had their eyes covered ingested 22 percent fewer calories. That number was actually much higher, but researchers decided not to count all the food that fell on the floor or dribbled down people’s shirts. The theory behind this is simple. When you can’t see what’s on your plate, scientists say you’re “more apt to listen to your stomach.” I do listen to my stomach, and so does the entire congregation at the Heartland Church on Sunday mornings. I tested this theory the next day while my wife was out shopping. When she got home, I told her I had been doing a little experiment to see if this calorie-reduction plan was legit. Mary Ellen looked at the ketchup all over my face and shirt and said: “Okay, now to-
morrow see what happens when you eat blindfolded.” Researchers claimed that cutting off any one of your senses leads to less consumption of unneeded calories. I wondered what effect it would have to wear earplugs. “This is crazy,” said my wife. “Covering your ears will not make you eat less.” “It’s worth a try, Mary Ellen. What are we having tonight?” “I’m making your favorite: oven-fried coconut chicken, twice-baked potatoes and creamed spinach.” “I wish you had waited until I put in my earplugs to tell me that.” “Why?” “Because that sounded really good.” The bottom line is that I have tried covering my ears, my nose and my eyes, and I have not lost any weight. Next week, I’m going to try something I should have thought of before: I’m going to try covering my mouth.

‘File and suspend’ strategy going away Commentary by Joel Harris A little-known Social Security claiming strategy is going away after April 30 of this year. With the Bipartisan YOUR MONEY Budget Act of 2015, the strategy known as "file and suspend" will no longer be available to the American public. What is file and suspend? Under the current law, a filer who is at or past full retirement age can file for individual benefits and immediately suspend receiving them. This allowed a spouse or dependent to collect a spousal benefit off their record, in addition to getting an 8 percent simple interest growth to their benefits until the age of 70. The new law will allow anyone 66 or older to take advantage of this strategy through April 30. They can still file and suspend their benefits, which allows an eligible spouse or dependent to collect a benefit off their record under the old rules. That being said, anyone who is at, or will be reaching full retirement age before April 30, should seriously evaluate whether or not to file and suspend their ben-
efits before it is too late. After April 30, the file and suspend strategy will no longer be in affect. In a nut shell, for a spouse or dependent to collect a benefit, the original filer will have to file for their own benefit and be required to collect the benefit and forgo the 8 percent simple interest growth under the delayed retirement credits provision. If an individual files and suspends their benefits, all spousal and dependent benefits will be immediately suspended as well. One important caveat is if you've filed and suspended your benefits already, you will be grandfathered in and your strategy will continue to carry on before the new law is put in place. The time to act is now - so contact your advisor soon to see if it is worth your while to file and suspend your own benefits before April 30. Joel Harris is a financial advisor and president of Summit Financial & Insurance in Carmel. He can be reached at 317-507-1825 or at joelharris@tfamail.com

Allergy advice for spring Commentary by Anthony Russo, BS, PharmD, RPh Spring is here, and area residents are eagerly welcoming the warm weather and outdoor FROM YOUR PHARMACIST activities. Unfortunately, the beauty of spring also means a return of red, itchy and watery eyes as well as sneezing and runny noses for allergy sufferers. What are allergies? In short, allergies are the body’s way of overreacting to a foreign object in the air (pollen, for example) and fighting it with an immune response. Allergy treatments Our first line of defense for mild allergies are the daily, over-the-counter antihistamines. The three I recommend do not cause drowsiness like many others: Claritin, Allegra and Zyrtec. There is no strong evidence that one is better than another, but if the product doesn’t benefit you within 3-5 days, try another one. Your insurance may even pay for medicine, making them even more affordable. For more stubborn allergies, daily nasal ste-
roids fight more than histamine. Most insurance plans will help pay for nasal steroids, but three are available over the counter: Flonase, Nasacort and Rhinocort. There is more to using these medicines than simply squirting them up your nose, however. Ask your pharmacist for the proper usage technique. There are also alternative ways to treat allergies: “ Using a nasal irrigation product like the Neti Pot or saline spray. “ Vacuuming often reduces dust mites. “ Getting tested by your doctor determines exactly what you are allergic to so you can avoid it whenever possible. “ Paying attention to pollen counts and allergy indexes provides advance notice of the days you may feel your worst. Remember that it is always important to inform your doctor or pharmacist of over-thecounter medications you try. If these solutions aren’t helping, there are prescription-only options or allergy shots that may be appropriate. Blueprint for Improvement: From the ’80s to modern living Commentary by Larry Greene
AFTER SOLUTIONS:
After
The goal was to create a brighter, more modern and functional space the homeowners could enjoy with family and friends. 1. The fireplace was refinished in an asymmetrical style using new linear tile for the surround and quartz material for the face. 2. The fireplace hearth extended across the room to the new feature wall, adding additional seating and hidden storage to the room. 3. A media box was designed inside the fireplace mantle to hide behind the mounted television. 4. A new feature wall with custom lighting was built in place of the built-ins, giving the homeowners the perfect place to feature their glass collection. 5. New weathered concrete Coretec flooring and warm grey paint completed the modern space, giving it a cohesive look.
Before Background info: This Kokomo home was in need of a living room update. The homeowners built the home in 1984 and had not done any updating since. The living room needed to reflect the modern style of the recently updated kitchen. Their children also told them it was time for an update!
BEFORE PROBLEMS: The existing space was very traditional and did not reflect the homeowners’ contemporary style. The space no longer functioned well for the homeowners, nor functioned well with today’s modern technology. The space also contained built-in cabinetry the homeowners rarely used.

Brussels’ magnificent town hall
DISPATCHES
Commentary by Don Knebel
Designer workshop series – The public is invited to connect with design professionals each month on various interior design topics. Join them for Start With Art and Let it Be Your Design Guide at 10:30 a.m. April 19 at the Indiana Design Center. Dianne Wright of Coats-Wright Art & Design will present. RSVP via email to concierge@IndianaDesignCenter.com.
The town hall of Brussels, Belgium, is one of the most impressive buildings of its kind in Europe. The city TRAVEL it serves is smaller than most people imagine. What became the Brussels town hall was begun in the early 15th century when Brussels was one of four capitals of the Duchy of Brabant, a state of the Holy Roman Empire. The Gothic building originally included a short belfry on one end and was expanded in 1444 by adding a larger section adjacent the belfry. In 1454, the belfry was replaced by a 310-foot-tall tower featuring an open octagonal pinnacle topped by a sixteen-foot-tall gilded statue of Archangel Michael, the patron saint of Brussels. Michael, the only angel referred to by name in the Old and New Testaments and the Quran, is slaying a dragon thought to represent Satan. An improbable local legend says the tower’s architect jumped to his death when he recognized the tower was off-center. Brussels’ town hall is located along the west side of the Grand Place, a lively
Simple facial mask – Here’s a super simple facial mask use can use to tone and tighten skin. Beat two egg yolks, and apply them to your clean face, forehead and neck, avoiding the sensitive area around your eyes. Leave it on for 20 minutes as you relax on your bed with pillows under your feet. Do not talk while relaxing – the egg yolk will crack, peel and fall off before it gets to do its work. Source: BottomLinePersonal.com
Manicure tips – Petroleum jelly is very useful for manicures. When you open a new bottle of nail polish, put a thin coat of the jelly around the neck of the jar to keep it from sticking in the future. Before you use the polish, use a cotton swab to apply more petroleum jelly to the skin around your nails. That way, any polish that misses won’t stick to your skin. public square surrounded by guild halls and museums. One of the museums holds 137 statues of nobles and saints originally displayed on the town hall’s façade, now replaced with replicas. When Belgium split from the Netherlands in 1830, Brussels became the new country’s capital and the Brussels town hall served briefly as the seat of government. Today, the town hall holds the offices of the mayor of the City of Brussels, whose 170,000 residents speak both French and Dutch. The City of Brussels is one of 19 independent municipalities comprising the BrusselsCapital Region, a polyglot urban area with a population of 1.2 million. Despite its relatively small size, the City of Brussels is the home to the headquarters of the European Union and NATO, making it the unofficial capital of Europe.
