Itown Church considers other options for expansion By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com After rising concerns from neighbors, Itown Church is exploring different options for the expansion of its Fishers campus at 9959 E. 126th St. Itown Church recently proposed an expansion onto the driving range and update putting greens of Gray Eagle Golf Course at 126th Street and Brooks School Road, a plan that projected 75 percent hard surface with the parking lot and church building. Nearby Graystone neighborhood residents expressed concern and signed petitions, and now Itown Church is seeking other options. “itown has filed a continuance for the City Council meeting because we have heard the concerns of our future neighbors and want to address them,” Mason McDonald, Itown executive administrator, wrote in an email to Current. “Our efforts to acquire land are for the simple purpose of expanding our ability to reach our city with the Good News of Jesus Christ. We have no interest in engaging in a zoning battle over green space or the viability of a local golf course. To that end, we are using this continuance period to exhaust all options, as we work with city officials and

the City Council to find a property that better accommodates the community we serve. It would be premature to comment at this time in any more detail.” If the church purchased the green space and driving range from Gray Eagle Golf Course, owner R.N. Thompson could build a clubhouse on the course. Mark Thompson, director of golf operations for R.N. Thompson, did not disclose the proposed selling price. Neighbors are happy with the continuance and hope Itown will build elsewhere so that they can continue to enjoy the golf course’s green space and wildlife from their backyards. “I think the first step is getting the new Itown proposal settled, and the second step is to continue to focus on maintaining recreBaptist Road for approximately 60 days to allow for contractors to reconstruct the intersection. Signs with detour routes will be in place. Those with questions may call the Hamilton County Highway Dept. at 317-773-7770. 96TH STREET Construction has begun on the new roundabout at 96th Street and Lantern Road. 96th Street traffic between Kincaid Drive and Fitness Lane/Pinecreek Drive will be reduced to one lane in each direction throughout the summer. BROOKS SCHOOL ROAD The Brooks School Road bridge over Interstate 69 is closed as Milestone Contractors rebuild the bridge deck. During the closure, traffic will be detoured to Promise Road via 126th and 136th streets. The bridge will remain closed until August. ALLISONVILLE ROAD AND 146TH STREET Hamilton County Highway Dept. has changed the traffic pattern for northbound Allisonville Road at 146th Street. There are now two left turn lanes and one northbound through lane. 116th Street Lane restrictions will occur on 116th Street between I-69 and Cumberland Road through summer for improvements.

ational green space and what we can do to work together as HOA associations,” Graystone resident Teona Wright said. “I understand R.N. Thompson’s point of view and what their needs are. The whole goal of our efforts is to preserve this asset for the community.” Wright said the city council doesn’t always receive feedback from neighbors regarding proposals, but that it’s important for residents to speak up if they disagree. “I think oftentimes things are just going along, and people that are on the city council or the mayor, they don’t get a lot of feedback,” she said. “I think they appreciate knowing where people stand on certain issues that really impact their community, so I think this flow of support for the recreational green space and preserving it and looking for alternate properties for Itown, I think it’s important for council to hear. I think they really appreciated getting the input to allow them to look at it from a different perspective.” Itown Church is scheduled to go before the Fishers City Council for a second and third reading of the proposal at 7 p.m. July 17 at City Hall, 1 Municipal Dr. For the full agenda, visit fishers.in.us. 113th Street In order to resurface and make roadway improvements, there will be lane restrictions on 113th Street from Olio Road to Florida Road. USA Parkway Drivers on USA Parkway will experience lane restrictions while crews are resurfacing the roadway. Flaggers will direct traffic. Ind. 37 All work on the project is expected to be complete this summer. Turn lanes will not be affected. A minimum of one through-lane will be maintained at all times. NOBLESVILLE Five-points roundabout Roundabout construction at the city’s fivepoints intersection (Greenfield and Christian avenues and 10th Street) has switched its traffic patterns. Southbound 10th Street traffic will begin traveling on the west side of the roundabout circle. During this phase, the center portion of the roundabout and 10th Street splitter islands will be constructed. There will be no left turns within the intersection. Advance signage will direct motorists wishing to turn left to follow the posted detour route, which utilizes Pleasant Street and 16th Street. The intersection will remain an all-way stop.

Urban Chalkboard to auction art By Renee Larr • news@currentinfishers.com The Urban Chalkboard in Carmel, 452 E. Carmel Dr., will host a silent auction to benefit Geist Orchard Cooperative Preschool from event 5 to 7 p.m. during its Patio Night July 20. Auctioned will be portions of a large canvas created by participants in an art class at Urban Chalkboard called Process Art. “Process Art is really just about the process and not the end product,” said Cheyenne LandRequiz, a teacher at Geist Orchard Cooperative Preschool. “The kids have lots of opportunities for messy fun and letting their imagination run wild to create, using a lot of different materials and mediums.” Land-Requiz teaches the Process Art class at Urban Chalkboard. Each week, she brings in different items such as plungers, pendulums and old CDs for kids to use to add to the canvas. “It’s really messy, but she brings in all these incredible materials each week,” said Jessica Beer, co-owner of Urban Chalkboard. “This canvas is around 4 by 10 feet. We lay it on the floor, and the kids just gather around the canvas to explore all the materials and the canvas. It’s really cool to see how it’s changed each week.” The canvas will be divided into pieces that families can purchase at Patio Night. Pizza, beer

Purdue professor Beaudoin helps make flying safe By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com As a member of the energetics materials team, Purdue University chamber professor of chemical engineering Stephen Beaudoin is at the forefront of making flying safe. Beaudoin primarily works with the contact sampling and detection at the checkpoints at airports. The swabs he helped developed also can be used at sporting events or other venues. Beaudoin shared his research with the OneZone June luncheon. Beaudoin is part of a research team participating in Awareness and Localization of Explosives-Related Threats, which is a multi-university Dept. of Homeland Security Center of Excellence. The Purdue team includes chemical, medical and aeronautical engineering professors. “I’m happy to be able to talk to different groups like this to let them know what capabilities we have at Purdue and how Purdue works with the different government agencies to improve and enhance our national security,â€? Beaudoin said. “It’s just to let them know what we’re doing and how we fit in the overall scheme of keeping our nation safe.â€? Beaudoin, who has been at Purdue for 14 years, researched energetic materials (high stored amounts of chemical energy), such as explosives, propellants and pyrotechnics, for approximately eight years. Beaudoin assured the audience any information he was sharing was approved by the Dept. of Defense and Homeland Security. “The moment we use our technology once, the bad guys have it and are reverseengineering it,â€? Beaudoin said. “We don’t know what a terrorist looks like but they’re

out there and they are working hard to harm people like us. There is a big challenge in our community to find ways to stay one step ahead of the newest threats coming our way. Most of the people Beaudoin said the terrorists being caught with his team’s research are lone wolves who are not affiliated with a state sponsor. “These are people that are going to charge the gate with explosives strapped to them, Beaudoin said. “Those people catch the people who are screaming explosives because they are coated with these things. Beaudoin said the swabs, the no-fly list and other protections make it clear to some terrorists they are not going to get through. “They don’t test the fence, Beaudoin said. “It’s the layers upon layers that make it a success.

Fishers makes 10 arrests through CrimeWatch app, celebrates first year

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com The Fishers CrimeWatch Mobile App has been a part of the Fishcover story ers Police Dept. for more than a year and is to thank for 10 arrests made in the city. Nine were made in the past three months. In all, there have been hundreds of reported incidents by thousands of users. FPD Assistant Chief Ed Gebhart said he realized another way of communication was needed between police and community members when he noticed FPD officers’ use of social media. He Gebhart approached Auri Rahimzadeh, owner at Auri’s Ideas, to develop the app. The plan originally came out of Launch Fishers’ Code and Coffee program. “Ed came to Code and Coffee over at Launch Fishers, where a bunch of Rahimzadeh developers get together. He had an idea for an app for getting better communication with the citizens for nonemergency stuff and start communicating with the citizens of Fishers in a more modern way,” Rahimzadeh said. “I said, ‘Sure, I’ll build it,’ and I built the app free of charge for the city. Here we are, a year after shipping it.” Arrests made from the app have been for public intoxication and drug possession, among other offenses. “(The calls) are suspicious in nature where (app users) ask an officer to check on an individual that has turned out to either be in possession of drugs or intoxicated, so the right kind of call types we see come through the app,” Gebhart said. “In correlation to (the app) progressing, I believe that law enforcement has to continue to develop communication. It has to be effective. We must adapt to change, to how society is changing. I don’t see the use of

Officer Jamie Alvis uses the Fishers CrimeWatch app. (Submitted photos by Tom Weger)

these devices slowing. I think they’re only going to progress.” The app allows users to take photos of suspicious activity and submit them to the responding officer. Gebhart said the back end of the app has expanded to allow for police to identify trends and connect photos and key words. “We have photo-searching capabilities, so if someone says there’s a creepy gray Honda in their neighborhood, officers (can search) and find creepy gray Hondas in other neighborhoods, see photos and tie it to key words,” he said. “We’ve been trying to take that data and lead to more proactive law enforcement and helping citizens more effectively.” After its first year, FPD is now looking at expanding CrimeWatch throughout the county.

“Our goal after all this time is to expand it outside of Fishers a bit and help all of Hamilton County,” Gebhart said. “Eventually, maybe integrate it with 911. Not replace 911, but so that all these calls become part of the dispatch system, which is the official way of showing what’s going on. That takes a long time. Anything like that takes a while to plan and properly implement, but we haven’t slowed down on innovation. “A common question we are asked is, ‘Are you going to sell it or try monetizing it?“ he added. "That has not been our concentration. We are happy with what we’re doing. We’re doing this for the good cause of it.” The app is free and available for download for Apple and Android phones. CrimeWatch receives MIRA Recognition Fishers CrimeWatch Mobile App won an honorable mention for Best Tech Service of the Year during the Techpoint Mira Awards in April. The MIRA Awards honor top businesses and leaders in Indiana tech. The app has received several awards in addition to the CrimeWatch app. The CrimeWatch app has more than 4,200 users, and 600 incidents have been reported on it since last year's launch. Phase 1 parenting success

obs e r v ation Reaching terminal stressocity

Commentary by Danielle Wilson

Commentary by Terry Anker The law of terminal velocity holds that if an object is falling from a great height, it will gain speed only until it reaches the attraction limit of the gravity pulling it earthward. In other words, the planet is drawing the thing to it (defining its weight). Without gravity, the object would not fall at all – and would have no “weight” in the way we might imagine. Please forgive the physics lesson, but the notion that all things will come to their natural limit is an intriguing one. Although we may find our constraints at different paces, each, in due time, will max out! At a wedding recently, the otherwise lovely outdoor affair was witness to an approaching, and ominous, rainstorm. Even as the staff scurried to move the band and other gear inside before the squall, one imagined what would be the harm if we all got a little wet? In the first moments, we might scramble to protect delicate garments or arrangements of hair. But as the drops came, we’d soon be wet. So wet that we couldn’t get any wetter. We would achieve the terminal velocity of wetness. Could we apply the same concept to others of our fears? Is there a maximum amount of stress someone can take before reaching terminal stressocity – the point where no more can be managed or absorbed? And, if so, should we all relax just a bit knowing that a breaker switch is standing guard? Just as a cup can only hold so much liquid, should we think more about its contents and have less concern for the overflow? Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. Highway highlights Commentary by Melkote Ramaswamy, Ph.D. Keeping an eye on the highway has its fringe benefits. I have often been observation bewildered by a semi minus its trailer. It reminds me of a locomotive without the cars or an orchestra without the conductor. Then there is the cement mixer with its rotating drum. You get the feeling that it is getting ready to swirl something at you anytime! It is quite a sight to see half a dozen expensive, new Mercedes-Benz’s being hauled by a single carrier. I would worry about how they survive hundreds of miles of chuckholes, speed bumps and low-clearance underpasses before reaching their destinations. Another intriguing sight is an 18-wheeler with several tires folded up. This conjures up the image of an airplane with one of its engines turned off. Why is it that pick-up trucks display their make so boldly? I have seen Toyota on trucks but not Tercel on cars. Then

there are cars that flaunt their turbo heritage. While a speeding monstrous trailer in front of you is unnerving, it is hard not to get a kick out of what they have to display. Examples: “This vehicle paid $12,000 in taxes last year” or, “If you find me driving unsafely, call 1-800-….” I have often been tempted to call but too lazy and felt uncomfortable to write down that number. Bumper stickers offer diversion and entertainment. Window stickers are catching on. One that attracted my eye read, “I only stop if my brakes work.” Have you noticed that the sign on an ambulance reads backwards? A common highway occurrence is a vehicle in the left lane with a stuck left turn signal. Does it want to cross the median, I wonder? What I have yet to see is a highway robbery. And that, I hope I never see! Melkote Ramaswamy is a resident of Westfield. He is a speaker, writer and author of “An Immigrant Celebrates America” (University of Indianapolis Press 2007).

It occurred to me that Doo and I are in the midst of a monumental year of parenting. Our youngest turned humor 13 in the spring, leaving us with only teenagers as roommates. Then the twins celebrated their 16th birthdays yesterday, after having recently obtained driving permits. And barring incarceration, we’ll be dumping our oldest curbside at his yet unnamed IU dormitory in just six short weeks. Go us! Not surprisingly, I’m frequently asked, “How do you feel about (insert milestone)?” The answer is always a resounding, “Faneffing-tastic!” I’m not kidding. True, when I reflect on my role as a mother in the context of preparing my precious little angels to go out into the world as responsible, kind, civic-orientated adults, I’m almost always second-guessing myself. Do they really understand the importance of recycling? Should I have listened more to their problems and fixed less? Why does the Chore Chart never seem to work? But when I stand back and look at the young men and women they’re becoming, I can easily give myself and Doo pats on the back. First, they all survived. That may not sound like a big deal, but back in 2004, when I had three in diapers and a fourth who liked to take his pants off at the public library while screaming, “Mommy, wipe my bottom,” my mantra was simply “Keep them alive until dinner.” Second, all are on track to eventually find jobs and move out. I’m 95 percent confident that none of my children will end up as basement-dwelling moochers in their 30s. So congratulations to Doo and me. First phase of parenting almost complete! Peace out. Death by vending machine Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I just returned from my brother’s wedding in New York City, and I am happy to report that things went off humor without a hitch ... except for Peter. He got hitched for the first time, which was about the last thing I expected him to do at age 66. My family was strolling along Sixth Avenue on Thursday, and I stopped at the spot where once sat a Horn and Hardart Automat, the world’s biggest “vending machine.” Inside the restaurant was a giant wall covered with hundreds of small compartments, each with shiny glass doors. Customers would put in coins, slide the door open and grab a serving of creamed spinach, Salisbury steak, meatloaf or homemade apple pie. At one time, the slots only took nickels. I’m not old enough to remember back that far. Behind those little doors was a mammoth kitchen where men and women in starched white uniforms slid cherry cobbler into the oven and basted the huge turkeys to be roasted. If your favorite vegetable was not in its slot, you simply vocalized, “GOT ANY CREAMED SPINACH?” Before you knew it, a

hand appeared and placed the succulent side dish within your grasp. In 2016, 14 people were killed by vending machines. I assumed it was from bad chicken salad, but apparently it was the machine falling on folks who had lost their temper and began shaking the behemoth. Last week, I put a buck in a dispenser for a cup of coffee. I pressed extra cream and extra sugar. The piping hot beverage came bubbling out exactly as I had programmed it. The aroma of freshly brewed java wafted into my nose, but the precious liquid swirled down the drain hole. There was no cup. Ain’t technology great? Now, machines even drink your coffee for you. Horn and Hardart closed in 1991, selling many of their locations to Burger King. Occasionally, for old time’s sake, when I place my drive-thru order, I scream, “GOT ANY CREAMED SPINACH?”

Amy’s top picks for the 2017 Indy Film Fest Commentary by Amy Pauszek It’s that time of year again to grab your favorite film-buff pal and get to the annual Indy Film Fest. It’s one of my favorites because it has something for everyone and it’s one of the hottest festivals in town. The festival runs July 13 film through July 22 at the Indianapolis

Museum of Art. The Indianapolis 48 Hour Contest also will be featured at the festival. This is where local Indy filmmakers have 48 hours to write, cast and produce a short film. I have been a judge for five years and last year participated in a film just for fun. It’s a whirlwind of excitement but hard work. For tickets, visit indyfilmfest.org.

“WIND RIVER” Opening night, showing at 7 p.m. July 13 An FBI agent teams up with a town’s veteran game-tracker to investigate a murder that occurred on a Native American reservation.

“CHATTER BOX” A short film, showing at 7:30 p.m. July 16 and 3:30 p.m. July 22 The Chatter Box has been an Indianapolis bar since the 1930s but hasn’t always been the establishment that it is today. Current owner David Andrichik welcomes everyone to the historic bar where local jazz musicians can share their art every night of the week.

“DEAD DRAW” Feature film, showing at 9 p.m. July 17 and 8:15 p.m., July 21 Someone knows about the $25 million and the plane to Mexico. Someone killed the gateway pilot. As loyalty turns to suspicion and friends become enemies, four criminals try to find the rat and escape their past - if they can survive the night.

“THE THINGS WE’VE SEEN” A feature film, showing at 9:15 p.m. July 19 and 3:15 p.m. July 22 A boy searches for his fugitive father in a town struggling to survive.

Arts Crawl returns, invests $2,000 more into artists By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com

List of artists

The Fishers Arts Crawl will return for its third summer. This year it is investing approximately $2,000 more into its artists. The investment will add a dance event troupe, Kenyetta Dance Company, for performances of “The Skin We’re In.” New additions also include Storytelling Arts of Indiana and the Bongo Boy Drum Circle. “We’ve done some similar events this summer with Happy Hour in the District. We are trying to do amended versions because the Arts Crawl is so big, and we want to make sure to give artists attention and support in a bigger fashion,” said Casey Cawthon, City of Fishers assistant director of public relations. “This year in particular the city invested a little bit more from a dollar standpoint into the event, because we are really looking to maintain vibrancy for artists coming into the Nickel Plate District.” The Arts Crawl will be from 6 to 9 p.m. July 15 in the Nickel Plate District. Participating artists come in all forms, including woodworking, sculpting, live music, breakdancing, musicians and more. After the Arts Crawl, Jennie DeVoe will perform during the AMP After Dark Concert Series from 9 to 11 p.m. at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, 6 Municipal Dr.

• William Denton Ray and Jeff Day Music will perform at The Switch. This also is the hub for Fishers Arts Council, which will be selling Sun King beer. • Meyer Najem will feature an exhibit by philanthropist and painter Marianne Glick. • The 20-instrument drum circles will perform at The Pocket Park throughout the event. • Citizen’s State Bank is paired with Becky Heimann who creates wood block prints. • Lily & Sparrow will feature Patty Klunzinger, a glassblowing artist. • Brett Wiscons will “pedal and play” acoustic guitar on the Pint Cycle. • For a full list of artists and their locations throughout the Nickel Plate District, visit fishers.in.us/ artscrawl.

Julie Strawhacker participates in the 2015 Fishers Arts Crawl. (File photo)

“The Arts Crawl is really neat. It gives people a chance to explore the community but in a way that feels really organic,” Cawthon said. “The Arts Crawl is a really cool opportunity to check out local businesses, see what goods and services they offer, but also connect (people) with the art community.” Cawthon encourages those interested to like the Arts Crawl event page on Facebook, as it posts updates and responds to people periodically. For more, visit fishers.in.us/artscrawl. An Arts Crawl map will be available on the website and the Nickel Plate District mobile app before the event.

The theme of Marianne Glick’s upcoming art exhibit is "Joy in Nature," and for good reason. art "There are abstract interpretations of nature, so there will be landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes in varying degrees of abstraction,” Glick said. “It’s sort of my take of really enjoying spring, summer and the colors of nature.” The grand opening will be from 6 to 9 p.m. July 14 at Meyer Najem Construction, 11787 Lantern Rd., Suite 100, Fishers. The exhibit began July 7 and is expected to run a month, Glick said. Glick, a resident of the north side of Indianapolis, said approximately 30 pieces will be on display. She said 25 percent of proceeds from each item will go to the United Way of Indiana. This is the first time Glick has had an exhibit at Meyer Najem. Glick said a representative from Nickel Plate Arts asked if she would be interested in an exhibit at Meyer Najem, a Nickel Plate arts partner. “I looked at the gallery space there and it’s lovely,” Glick said. “I’m thrilled to be able to show my work there.”

Commentary by Mark Johnson Where to go: Tavern on South Where it is: 423 W. South St., in Indianapolis When it’s open: Monday-Thursday: 11 a.m.- 9 p.m., Friday: 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Saturday: noon -10 p.m., Sunday: Closed (open at 10 a.m. for 1 p.m. games), Bar: Monday-Saturday until close. Mark’s Take: Tavern on South has all bases covered. By that, I mean this restaurant meets all dining wants: families, large parties or couples. Two levels of comfortable seating, indoor and outdoor, make for a unique dining experience. Picture windows offer grand views of downtown Indianapolis, and a relaxed atmosphere complete the experience. What 2 get: This is a menu that you’ll really want to explore: An array of seasonal items made with fresh ingredients. My recommendation is sweet n’ sour chicken thighs, wok-seared and served with baby corn, snow peas, water chestnuts, red bell pepper and house Szechwan. It has just the right amount of spice with a tangy aftertaste. What’s the cost: Entrees between $16-$31 To learn more, visit tavernonsouth.com. You can also contact the restaurant at 317-602-3115 and follow on Facebook and Twitter.
