What do you get when you combine 20 tons of top soil with 20,000 gallons of water? Mud Day! Hundreds of kids and their parents showed up to wallow FUN in the mud during the annual free event at Cyntheanne South park on July 12. Town Manager Scott Fadness says it’s a very unique event. “Actually the Parks Dept. staff came up with this idea. It doesn’t cost a lot of money. The Public Works Dept. gets it all set up and it’s just a unique opportunity. Most kids don’t get to do this anymore and they come out in droves.” Across town, it was Pet Day at the Fishers Farmer’s Market at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. The Fishers Chamber of Commerce sponsors the weekly market from 8 a.m. to noon.

Gateway intersection in progress – The Town of Fishers has begun construction on a community gateway at the intersection of Fall Creek and Brooks School roads. The town selected this intersection because of its high traffic volume and access to Geist Reservoir. Construction on the gateway should be completed mid-September. The project is estimated to cost $400,000 and is being paid for by the Geist Impoundment Board. The Town Council approved the gateway projects at the April 7 council meeting. Dean’s list – Fishers resident Patrick Brimberry, a senior at Harding University, is among more than 1,200 students included on the dean’s list for grades achieved during the spring 2014 semester. The dean’s list is published each semester honoring those who have achieved high scholarship. To be eligible, a student must be carrying 12 or more hours with a 3.65 or higher grade-point average and no incompletes.

No new Fishers BMV branch By Ann Craig-Cinnamon • ann@youarecurrent.com You may have recently seen a local television station do a story on the closed Fishers Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch government on Municipal Drive in downtown Fishers. The camera followed several people as they went up to the door and were surprised to find the branch closed, permanently. There was advance warning that the branch was closing. Current in Fishers had a story in the April 8 issue (“Fishers BMV to close”). Evidently, it caught a lot of people by surprise. It was the Town of Fishers that terminated the lease in order to make room for the town’s IT department and traffic court. The BMV posted signs and held a public hearing which only a few people attended. The BMV has considered opening another branch in Fishers but according to Josh Gillespie, the Deputy Commissioner of Communications, the public doesn’t seem too upset by the closure. “We have received little-to-no feedback regarding the closure of the Fishers BMV branch. In fact, consolidation with the surrounding branches has gone better than we could have anticipated.” he said. “We believe that is because the residents of Fishers do have so many options available to them such as using www.mybmv.com, to the use of surrounding branches in Noblesville, Car-

mel, McCordsville, Lawrence and in Nora, to the use of our smart phone app. In fact, many branch transactions, such as registration renewals, can be done online or with the app,” said Gillespie. He also quotes statistics that show that branch transactions had gone down in Fishers’ by 25 percent since 2007 despite rapid growth. “I’m a Fishers resident myself. But outside of the press, we just haven’t heard from hardly anyone,” Gillespie said. It could be that people just aren’t complaining because – according to Randy Mace with CPM Construction, the company handling the building renovations – a lot of people come there every day expecting to take care of their business. “Thirty or 40 people at least walk up here every day. Most aren’t happy,” Mace said.

Change at the top at HSE Commentary by Larry Lannan The Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) School Corporation is losing two outstanding leaders. Their shoes will be tough to fill. PLAIN TALK First, we discovered on June 12 that Assistant Superintendent Dr. Beth Niedermeyer will be replacing the retiring Dr. Libby Conner in Noblesville. Dr. Niedermeyer handled curriculum for HSE Schools and presided over a number of important programs. She has overseen the rollout of the HSE21 program, which will result in iPads being used by Grades 5 and 6 this Fall and all grades by Fall 2016. The goal is to reduce textbook costs. Dr. Niedermeyer has also been at the center of developing the high ability program at HSE Schools. This program aims to identify students with high potential and offer a more rigorous academic challenge for them. On July 8, we learned that HSE Supt. Dr. Brian Smith will be leaving the local school system to assume the position of executive director for the Indiana School Boards Association (ISBA). This is quite an honor, since ISBA has only had six executive directors since its creation in 1949. I am not surprised ISBA looked to someone like Dr. Smith to run their association. He has always been active in working with members of the Indiana General Assembly, which will be a big part of his ISBA duties.

I’ve covered education as a reporter in the past and found most superintendents shy away from getting involved in any commercial issues. Dr. Smith, on the other hand, has been very active in the Fishers Chamber of Commerce, seeing the chamber as a major institution in the community and a group with a stake in a quality local school system. Dr. Smith has overseen successful referendum campaigns, the most recent one to allow the building of senior academies at each local high school. Those academies are now under construction and are scheduled to open in Aug. 2015. I have had the chance to watch Doctors Smith and Niedermeyer in action and both have been impressive leaders for HSE Schools. The ISBA and Noblesville Schools both made wise decisions. Now, the hard part begins for the HSE School Board. The search starts to replace these two outstanding leaders. HSE Schools have continued high standards with Brian Smith and Beth Niedermeyer in leadership positions. The burden on the HSE School Board members will be finding leaders of the same quality to replace them. Larry Lannan is an active news blogger in Fishers. “I wanted to be able to share a milkshake with my granddaughter again.” After my stroke, I had medical issues that made it impossible for me to go directly home. The people at the hospital told me about rehab and therapy available at Westminster Village North. My daughter visited the newly renovated health center and decided it was the place for me. My private Medicare suite was spacious and comfortable; and the staff really cared about my needs. My experience with rehabilitation therapy was superb. The equipment was brand new and the therapists were well-trained and helpful. I was eager to go home, but will always appreciate Westminster Village North. Now Sophie and I can enjoy that milkshake at my home again.

Chamber luncheon features Lt. Gov. By John Cinnamon • news@currentinfishers.com

Indiana Lt. Governor, Sue Ellspermann, was the featured speaker at the Fishers Chamber of Commerce Luncheon July government 16 at the Forum Conference Center. As the Vicechair of the Indiana Career Council and co-chair of the state’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Transportation Infrastructure, Ellspermann focused her 20-minute presentation on the state’s initiatives in those two areas. “As the governor and I came in, we said job creation is job one,” said Ellspermann. She went on to tout Indiana’s favorable ratings from Chief Executive Magazine (No. 1 in the Midwest in its Best & Worst State Survey), a Triple-A rating from all three ratings agencies, and No. 1 in the Midwest on the Tax Foundation’s 2014 Business Tax Climate. Additionally, Ellspermann pointed out that 63,000 new private sector jobs have been created since she and Gov. Mike Pence took office in 2012. Ellspermann believes that job creation can be spurred on by improving Indiana’s percentage of the workforce that has a post-secondary degree. Currently that number stands at 34 percent. The Indiana Career Council’s goal is to increase that number to 60 percent by 2025. To that end, she says it’s important to make career counseling a priority in schools and “to engage employers much more closely to connect with and assist

our schools in that career/college readiness.” On Indiana’s infrastructure front, the lieutenant governor said the Blue Ribbon Panel that she co-chairs established three tiers of projects important to the future of the state’s roads, with tier-one being the most critical. “Those tier-one projects … include adding lanes to I-65 and I-70, the Commerce Connector, and the I-69/Ohio River Bridge in Evansville,” said Ellspermann. She conceded that the Commerce Connector (another outer-beltway around Indianapolis) was controversial, but said, “It is important from an economic impact standpoint.”

Fishers rain gardens benefit the environment By Holly Kline • news@currentinfishers.com The lush plants along both sides of 126th Street near I-69 in Fishers as well as the trees and plants in the nearby Geist ecology Christian Church parking lot add beauty to the landscape. However, passers-by may not be aware of their important purpose. The plantings were deliberately chosen for use in water quality swales and rain gardens, which increases the quality of water in nearby streams. Fishers installed water quality swales on both sides of 126th St. where it crosses over I-69. “These swales incorporate native plants and water quality dams that slow down the water so that it has time to pond and filter pollutants out of the storm water,” said Jason Armour, Stormwater Engineer for Fishers. Indianapolis firm, Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf Architects, incorporates water runoff solutions in their designs and Barth Hendrickson, BDMD Principal, further explained the importance of rain gardens. “The key to the proper function of a rain garden is that you have to engineer a way for water to run to an area where it’s absorbed into the soil,” Hendrickson said. “For example, water off parking lots is very dirty and filled with debris from cars,” he said. “If that material goes into pipes, it eventually can hurt streams and that is not good for wildlife.

Garden at Geist Christian Church at 126th St. near I-69. (Submitted photo)

Soil absorbs water so it reduces the quantity of water into streams plus you’re increasing the quality of water because it runs through soil and plants.” Hendrickson noted that one of his firm’s first projects in Fishers was Geist Christian Church at 126th St. and Promise Road. “The Geist site is a net zero run off site,” he said. “Their prairie is so big and has so many plants with deep root systems, that the rainwater probably does not make it into the streams.”

Hendrickson went on to explain the concept of green infrastructure, which describes an approach to water runoff that mimics the way nature would process water. “The green infrastructure approach is more in keeping with a pre-developed state,” he said. Educational signs were installed within the water swale areas along 126th St. and Geist Christian Church has provided signs throughout their prairie; both spots provide information about the plants within the rain gardens.

UP, UP AND AWAY Conner Prairie balloon has become a symbol and popular attraction at the park By Ann Craig-Cinnamon • ann@youarecurrent.com You can see the colorful balloon high in the sky over Fishers from miles away. The Conner Prairie balloon, which is filled with helium–not hot air–is one of approximately COVER STORY 60 similar balloons in service around the world. There’s one at the San Diego Zoo and Disney’s got one too, among many other venues. But Conner Prairie is the only institution of its kind to own one. If you wondered what a balloon has to do with Conner Prairie and Indiana history, you’re not alone says Cathy Ferree, Vice President of Exhibits, Programs, Interpretation and Facilities. “It’s very funny because at first people were like ‘what are they doing putting in a balloon? How does that fit with Conner Prairie?’ and then once you explain it to them, they’re like ‘wow, it really fits with Conner Prairie,’” she says. The balloon is part of an exhibit called 1859 Balloon Voyage which illustrates the first attempt ever at an airmail flight. That attempt happened just up the road in Lafayette, Ind., back in 1859 when a balloonist by the name of John Wise attempted to deliver 123 letters to New York City in his balloon, The Jupiter. Unfavorable winds forced him to land in Crawfordsville, Ind., but the attempt went down in history as the first official airmail delivery run for the U.S. Post Office. Learning from doing Ferree, who came to Conner Prairie six years ago to implement the balloon project, says the idea is to integrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) into the museum’s interactive experience. “We found this to be the perfect opportunity to show how technology influenced people’s lives and what they did. And it was also an innovation. They were hoping that these balloons could fly you continental, coast to coast. Needless to say, the train took that over and it didn’t work out quite the way they planned. So there was that great history story. And then on top of it, Indiana had the

first airmail delivery,” she says. “Innovation keeps moving us forward. And it’s great to show people and particularly young people, how innovation works. This was tried, it was tested, it was tried again and tested and, unfortunately it didn’t work out, but they tried something else.” She points out that balloons may not have been used to deliver mail but they did end up being used for many other things including weather forecasting. She says it’s the old adage of “if at first you don’t succeed: try, try again” which is the message Conner Prairie is trying to impart with its Create Connect exhibit. Balloon upkeep The balloon itself is made by a German company and contracted through a French company. Chris Greiling, who is the chief pilot and in charge of the balloon, says it’s a very physical job to take care of it. Since it is never taken down, even in winter, there’s lots of maintenance and upkeep. “The most difficult part of the job is probably deciding whether or not to fly on any given day. You’re in the Midwest and, as you know, it can be dicey, especially during our summer season with thunderstorms and wind. Wind is my enemy,” Greiling says. There are eight certified pilots that fly the balloon and one is always on-board during the tethered, 15-minute journey. As for safety, Greiling says one question he often gets is what happens if the cable breaks? “Not much other than it’s just going to continue to go up and continue to fly. It’s not going to fall out of the sky. We become like a hot air balloon that you normally see,” he says and adds that it has never happened to any of the balloons in service around the world. Ferree says there have been no safety issues whatsoever. At the beginning of next season, the balloon will get a new envelope, which is the orange and yellow outside part of the balloon. Greiling says they will transfer the helium from the current balloon into the new one which could take 24 hours and help from lots of volunteers. He says that the FAA recognizes the balloon as entertainment

not an aircraft. It certainly has been entertaining thousands of people. Its first year, 2009, saw 22,000 riders and in 2013 there were more than 20,000. Ferree thinks the balloon has become an important part of Fishers. “It’s become an icon for Fishers as well because you can see it from a really good distance around here. The Hamilton County Convention and Visitors Bureau did support the original exhibit and inflation of the balloon because they believe it is an attractor,” she says.

Commentary by Danielle WIlson

Back to school for this ‘agent’

This is who’s protecting our “friendly skies” these days … with your tax dollars. (Don’t laugh, because this really happened.) Chris Stirewalt of Fox News’ digital report told us last week that Justin Gray, the Washington correspondent for Central Florida’s WSTV, had his District of Columbia-issued driver’s license in hand, while going through security at the Orlando, Fla., airport. But when a Transportation Safety Administration agent (term used loosely there) looked at his driver’s license, he vowed to Gray the license was not legal. Gray said it was his lawful, current documentation from the D.C. government, but the agent said he didn’t know the license. After a brief discussion, Gray said he grasped that the agent didn’t know what the District of Columbia was. After much discussion, Gray was finally able to go through security. Soon after the discrepancy, a TSA spokesman contacted Gray to confirm the District of Columbia’s license is an acceptable form of ID (it was an ah-ha moment, apparently) and that all the TSA agents in Orlando will be shown a copy of the D.C. driver’s license. Of course they will. And it probably will be done in a seminar with continental breakfast and a highly paid driver’s license expert as the instructor. ••• And speaking of Washington, our illustrious president, Barack Obama is viewed thusly in recent polling, according to Real Clear Politics: 41.3 percent approve of the job he’s doing, and 26 percent believe the nation is headed in the correct direction. Draw your own conclusion there, and then think about this: A generic Congressional ballot had Democrats with a 41.4-40.2 edge over Republicans. As we’ve said, Republicans represent the best example of a party able to extricate defeat from the jaws of victory. The long-running comedy show re-launches on Election Day, Nov. 4. Certainly, the experience met all anticipation – and then some. Expectedly, the emerging community influencers taught me as much or more that I might have shared with them. And, friendships emerged that will long outlive our single year’s work. Across the span of months that constituted our given mission, we came to understand that leadership, especially as it relates to community building and sustaining, is as much or more an exercise in connecting as it is any of a myriad of important tactical activities. One cannot be all things to all people, but the most effective communities are those wherein the chief leaders learn to rely upon the strength of network that its citizenry has amassed. We build relationships for our own joy, but even more so that we can rely on each other

when needed. Perhaps it is so that we can join those in need with those best able to assist. Leadership is not pounding the table; it is identifying the gaps and serving to fill them. The best among us has an innate desire to help and is likewise filled with a sense of authentic need. Quiet service with an eye to avoid the debilitating dependency precipitated by our own unmeasured generosity ensures the dignity of those we set out to help and remembers the virtue of dogged personal responsibility and the sublime reward of individual freedom. HCLA promises its own that they will Learn, Connect, & Lead. It delivers. But one can also come to Experience, Interact, & Serve. Can’t we each choose to live in our communities with this as our motto? And, wouldn’t we be better for it? Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. QUOTE OF THE WEEK To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. –Ralph Waldo Emerson

As a rule, I hate spa massages. I know that sentiment separates me from about 99 percent of the world’s population, but I humor simply can never relax enough to enjoy a stranger’s man-hands rubbing on my nearly-naked body. Call me modest, call me insecure, and definitely call me cheap, because I also can’t get past the expense. A hundred bucks plus tip for 60 minutes of uncomfortable, awkward moments with scented oil and new-age music? I could have my Lab and 10-yearold run a relay on back for free in less time and probably to the same effect. Having said all that, however, I seem to perpetually have sore muscles. Time spent hunched at the computer, teaching a 15-year-old how to drive, and training for a stupid triathlon has my whole body constantly under stress. So I thought I’d give this new place, Feet Retreat, a try. As their name suggests, they specialize in a one-hour foot massage for just $25, which frankly sounded too good to be true. My husband Doo, who’d gladly defer a kid’s college tuition to employ a personal masseuse (preferably a Brit named Carson who could also serve tea; we love Downton Abby!) decided to tag along. We walked in without an appointment and were immediately ushered through a beaded curtain into a low-lit, whisper-inducing room with five cushioning-looking “beds.” After lying down, fully clothed, my masseuse placed my feet in water just hot-enough to make me cringe for one whole second before succumbing to total relaxation. That and the Kenny G tunes had me totally rethinking this whole spa thing. And then, to my surprise and delight, my gal began a full-body massage, over my clothes, starting with my face and neck, then moving down to my arms and shoulders, and finishing with my legs and back. The main event was of course my feet, which was heavenly, and I only had to suppress the giggles three times, once when she was working on my toes, and twice when I heard Doo getting smacked around. (I think they use reflexology and/or acupressure, but parts of it feels and sounds a little like a beat-down. In a good way, of course!) I never felt awkward, I never felt self-conscious, and I didn’t break the bank, even with a nice tip. How’s that for The Greatest Find of the Year? Yes, Feet Retreat is located in a strip mall between a nail salon and a Subway, and no, we weren’t treated to cucumber water in crystal stemware, but we both received wonderful, professional massages at an unbelievable price. And I got to keep my clothes on! Peace out.

Original cast member helps stage ‘Footloose’

By Joseph Knoop • joseph@currentincarmel.com

The Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre will stage performances of the classic musical “Footloose” July 24 through July 27, utilizing theatre the wisdom and instruction of one of the original “Footloose” performers. Catherine Cox, who performed as Ethel McCormack in the original 1998 “Footloose” stage production, traveled to Carmel to lead a workshop for the young actors in the musical. “She’s very down-to-earth,” said Samantha Russell, who plays Rusty. “It was really cool getting to talk to someone who’s been through all the things that some of us can only dream of.” The actors were also treated to an audition workshop with Cox, in which they received feedback after singing some of the songs Cox originally performed. Cox also critiqued interpretations of individual characters in the show. “You could pick from being annoyed with a character or upset with a character,” Joshua Brunsting said. “It gives you a different way to interpret your character. It’s allowed us to really develop, which is huge to any show.” The 48-member cast of Civic Theatre’s Young Adult Program is comprised of students from 17 different high schools from central Indiana, as far as Rossville and Mount Vernon. Students range in age from 14 to 18 years old. “It’s kind of a comprehensive program in that it has workshop and dance,” said Ron Morgan, director and choreographer of the production. “What I think attracts them is this facility, and there’s really beautiful dance studios and an education department. We also give them the tools like the music workshops, the drama workshops, the dance workshops.” Morgan has previously worked on Broadway, performing in the original cast of “Starlight Express” and “Meet Me in St. Louis.” He currently works as director and owner of the Performer’s Edge Dance Theatre in Carmel. Some actors also involve themselves in community outreach programs, and eight of the “Footloose” actors recently traveled to the Stratford retirement community to sing Broadway songs for residents. “Each year we try to do a community outreach program,” Morgan said. And a preview performance will also be conducted for certain community members who might have difficulty affording tickets. Variety plays an important role in attracting young actors and theatre attendees, according to Morgan. “Number one thing is the students, to attract them to the show,” Morgan said. “Another is

whenever there’s a movie musical, that helps sell tickets.” The young actors remain thankful for the opportunities presented to them through Civic Theatre. “If my mom had never found this, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today,” Russell said. “At my school, we don’t have an orchestra or any of these other opportunities that I get, so by the time I go to college, I probably wouldn’t be ready or get in. Noblesville’s Belfry Theatre will host performances of the parables of the Bible when “Godspell” is presented to the commutheatre nity on July 25 through July 27 and Aug. 1 through Aug. 3. Godspell, meaning “good news” in Old English, was originally written by playwright John-Michael Tebelak with songs written by Stephen Schwartz, the composer behind “Wicked” and “Pocahontas.” Structured as a series of parables, Godspell primarily revolves around the Gospel of Matthew and the life of Jesus. Director Connie Murello-Todd hopes to give the show’s cast and crew, comprised primarily of actors under the age of 18, a fun experience. “I try hard to keep it rated G or PG,” MurelloTodd said. “I also try to not be preachy, but the kids have actually gone and done a lot of their own research.” The Belfry Theatre will turn 50 years old next year. It was established with the help of Betty Lou Kyle, who founded the Apprentice Players program, which helps young actors receive opportunities to work in a real theatre in a variety of capacities. “It was one of (Betty’s) proudest achievements,” Murello-Todd said. Students were encouraged to select their own costuming for the musical. Characters are usually referred to by the actor’s first name. ters, like John the Baptist and Judas Iscariot, are even played by the same actor. This level of personalization lends a bit of fun to each actor’s interpretation of their character. “I feel like Judas was more in love with the idea of a savior than Jesus himself,” said Charles Parrish, who plays both John the Baptist and Judas. The religious angle of Godspell also plays an important role for community members who wish to express their faith. “It’s lots of fun, but we’re learning a lot about scripture,” Katelyn Rose-Maudlin said. “My church told the same scripture as the show recently. Japanese steakhouse opens By Ann Craig-Cinnamon • ann@youarecurrent.com There’s a new Japanese Steakhouse in Fishers at 116th St. and Allisonville Rd. behind CVS. Where once Volcano Japanese Steaknow open house was located, there is now the new Baba’s Japanese Steakhouse which opened its doors on June 13. The owner, Baba, says with his 30 years of experience working for Benihana and other restaurants in Chicago and elsewhere, he brings a vast knowledge of Japanese Steakhouses to Fishers. The restaurant, which he says uses only fresh products, features hibachi-style cooking and sushi. “People love the hibachi style with the chef coming out and cooking for the customers,” he says. Baba says his restaurant differs from a Benihana in that Baba’s will give you a more personal touch. “Benihana is more like a franchise – like a McDonald’s. They don’t really care about customers. We are a family restaurant and we care about each customer and we make sure that they’re comfortable here,” he says. Baba’s Japanese Steakhouse is open for lunch Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and for dinner Tuesday through Sundays from 5 to 10 p.m. If you go before Aug. 15, you can take advantage of Baba’s grand opening special of 30 percent off. “You’ve got to come see me, because I’m experienced. If you’re going to spend money, come spend money with me so you get quality food and a quality show. You know we put on quite a show for the customer too,” says Baba. Baba’s takes reservations for five or more people. For more information, call 577-6688.

Motorcyclists, hear this warning Commentary by Marty Wood I have been enjoying motorcycling for more years than I care to admit. In addition to the wind in our faces, unobstructed panoramic views and the experience of the Hearing road on two (sometimes three) wheels, most of us really enjoy the sound a motorcycle makes. Most motorcyclists understand that noise exposure over time damages their hearing. unfortunately, many define noise as that emanating from the bike itself or other road and traffic conditions. Many bikers believe that only those that do not wear full-face helmets are exposed to excessive noise. While somewhat correct, the real hearing “killer” is wind noise. Wind noise is the result of turbulence produced around the head while in motion. The result is irreversible hearing loss/damage over a period of time when adequate hearing protection is not worn. Like shooting and aviation noise exposure, the amount of exposure to the inner ear is compounded every hour you ride. To put this in perspective, an average worker surrounded by levels of approximately 85 to 90 decibels (dB) for an eight-hour day will not exceed the limits of exposure time within 24 hours. However, when the sound levels exceed 100 dB, exposure time is reduced to two hours. If sound levels exceed 115 dB, exposure time is reduced to 15 minutes. Typical “wind noise” at highway

speeds can measure up to 103 dB. At these levels, a rider begins to experience physical fatigue from excess noise exposure, and puts him or her into a position of needing a hearing aid later in life. Another common motorcycle riding experience is a temporary loss of your hearing level immediately following a long ride. Having this experience over time will result in permanent hearing damage. Everyone has experienced this at one time or another, whether it is from going to loud dance halls, or concerts or even work, but this is a common occurrence for motorcyclists who do not wear adequate hearing protection while riding their bike. There are several types of hearing-protection devices on the market. A custom set of ear molds is the best answer for suppressing sound. They provide excellent noise-suppression values and are comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. (One additional recommendation is to check with local state officials on the regulations of wearing hearing protection. See the AMA web pages on State Motorcycle Laws, www. americanmotorcyclist.com/Rights/State-Laws. aspx.) Marty Wood is the owner of Zounds Hearing of Fishers, 11852 Allisonville Rd. He may be contacted at 317-5ZOUNDS.

Nail biter - Biting your nails can be a dangerous habit because all the germs you come in contact with throughout the day accumulate in the crevice beneath the nail tips. Ways to avoid the urge are to keep yourself distracted and groom your nails regularly. - MensHealth Keep hydrated - Having a bottle of water on your desk or by work area makes you more prone to sip on it throughout the day. This reduces the possibility of hunger pangs and if done consistently can help you lose weight and increase hydration levels. -WomensHealth

Kitchen remodel adds better storage, function Commentary by Larry Greene EXISTING KITCHEN: This home is located on the Northside of Indianapolis near the White River. Lack of storage and blueprint for functionality were a few improvement of the reasons the owners decided to remodel. “As we stepped inside our front door, we were greeted by a cluttered office, an untidy laundry area and dated kitchen. The space did not give off a warm and welcoming feeling.” The goal was to create a more efficient entry, hide the laundry and create a functional yet contemporary kitchen. ENTRY AND LAUNDRY ROOMS: The previous office was transformed into an enclosed laundry room featuring a modern frosted glass door. A custom storage bench with wood top was placed in the entry to help organize clothing accessories. BAR AREA: The former laundry area was converted into a wet bar using new poplar cabinetry in a chocolate brown finish featuring frosted glass fronts. Coffee-brown granite countertops and a “Catalonia” tiled backsplash added warmth. ISLAND: The existing island offered ample storage, but lacked the proper overhang for bar stools and did not offer enough countertop space for everyday purposes. A new, larger multi-functional island was installed featuring decorative corbel supports. The expanded island now serves as a central spot for cooking, eating and conversing. APPLIANCES: To better accommodate the

before & after

homeowners’ lifestyle, an induction cooktop was added to the enlarged island. A stainless vent hood was added above the cooktop and an undercounter convection microwave was installed freeing up valuable countertop space needed for prep work. FINISHING TOUCHES: Tying together the desired warm and contemporary style, the couple chose a heated slate floor tile in a herringbone pattern for the kitchen and adjoining rooms and selected a warming “copper wire” paint color for the entry and kitchen walls.

RESULT: “One of our favorite features of the whole remodel is the vent hood. It is so functional and gives the kitchen a contemporary look. We love it.” Larry Greene is the owner of Case Design/Remodeling Indy, a fullservice design/build remodeling firm serving Boone, Hamilton, and Marion counties.
