AT&T donates $25,000 to fellowship program By Noah Alatza • news@currentinfishers.com AT&T announced a donation of $25,000 to Fishers High School’s Fellowship Program on Aug. 3. AT&T’s Indiana Presieconomy dent Bill Soards made the announcement official at an event at Launch Fishers at 7 Launch Dr. Soards said this is the third year for the scholarship program, which has donated a total of $50,000 to Launch Fishers. “It has been a huge success,” Soards said. “We are focused on success. There are so many tools available here at Launch Fishers.” Launch Fishers began operations in 2015. The fellowship annually accepts students with entrepreneurial endeavors to participate in a week-long boot camp featuring accomplished business leaders’ expertise. After the boot camp, students will usually have interviews with prospective host companies in hopes of gaining a summer internship, which most do. Other top names at the announcement included State Sen. Jim Merritt (R), Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness and founder and CEO of Launch Fishers John Wechsler. “We want to thank Bill (Soards) and the entire AT&T crew,” Wechsler said. “With everything we need, AT&T has helped us grow and build a strong community. We really appreciate that.” Wechsler also thanked Fadness for his support in “constantly engaging our best and brightest from the high school.” “AT&T’s signature philanthropic initiative, AT&T Aspire, drives innovation in education – through technology, social innovation and relationships – to ensure all students have the skills they need to succeed in school and beyond,” the company’s website stated.

Fadness focused his message on keeping Indiana moving forward, through technology and economic development across the city. “When we first started this concept at Launch (Fishers), nobody knew what (the city) was talking about,” Fadness said. “Now so many amazing companies are coming out of this facility. We will continue to be an innovative city and open up the classroom - the entire notion of making the world a classroom. We want to move Indiana forward. Let’s keep moving forward.” Merritt thanked AT&T for its continued work across the state. “There is always something going on here
at Launch Fishers,” Merritt said. “AT&T is rolling, and they are contributing all around the state. (AT&T) is making this a businessfriendly atmosphere.” Soards said the donation benefits Indiana’s growth. “We are pleased to make this contribution, on behalf of AT&T,” Soards said. “Fishers is a magnet for entrepreneurship across the state. We could not do this without the help of Indiana. This state is such a special place.” For more, visit launchfishers.com or about. att.com/content/csr/home/possibilities/at-taspire.html.
Women scam senior living facility resident By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com On July 26, a woman posed as Meadow Brooke Senior Living Facility staff and scammed a resident out of crime thousands of dollars, according to Fishers Police Dept. Another woman sat outside in a white Pontiac before driving off. The woman dressed in scrubs and told the resident if given cash, she could go on a grocery run for her. Later, the resident realized the woman stole her entire purse and used her cash and credit cards for purchases worth thousands of dollars.
If anyone can identify this woman, they should call the Fishers Police Dept. at 317-5953300. (Submitted photo)
Fishers Police Dept. spokesman officer Shawn Wynn said Fishers is not the first place scammed like this, and he knows of at least two others believe committed by the suspects, one in Castleton and one in Greenfield. The police department has not identified the women yet, although Wynn said there are leads. “Hopefully it’s only a matter of time before we can positively ID them,” he said. Meadow Brooke Senior Living Facility said they had no comment on the situation. Anyone with an idea of who the women are should called FPD at 317-595-3300.

The Beer Can Man www.currentinfishers.com
Fishers man talks expansive collection
By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Richard Bacon stumbled onto his hobby of collecting beer cans and now has thousands lining homemade shelves in his Fishers home. Bacon cover story said the collection began when he and his wife moved to Fishers from Indianapolis and found his sons’ beer can collections from the 1970s. “When they got interested in other stuff, we boxed all their beer cans up and put them in the attic or garage, and when I was up there cleaning up and getting ready to throw stuff away, I ran into their cans boxed up and brought them here (to Fishers),” Bacon said. “I thought I would build some shelves just to see what it looked like. I ended up with about 600 non-duplicate cans to start with, so then I started buying to add to the collection.” Now, Bacon has approximately 4,000 non-duplicate cans, and 10,000 to 12,000 total. He estimates his collection is worth nearly $30,000. He said he’ll see advertisements in newspapers or is acquainted with others who also collect beer cans and give away their duplicate. All the cans are opened, but Bacon said he’s only drank one or two from the collection. The rest he gathered or purchased already opened. “The appearance of them is what makes them valuable,” he said. “I wouldn’t want to have cans that are unopened because they explode and leak and make a real mess. I wouldn’t want any part of having a collection of unopened cans.” Some cans in Bacon’s collection are from the 1940s

and required a churchkey to open. He has cone tops, flat tops, special Sterling cans with the Kentucky Derby winning horse and rider from 1962 to 1976. He also has soda cans, such as the original Big 10 cola cans and the 1976 7UP “United We Stand” commemorative state
set. He’s missing three states from that set – Arkansas, Hawaii and Nebraska. When stacked in order, numbers coincide with states in alphabetical order, and the collection creates an image of the United States. Bacon said a few cans in his collection come from overseas. “It’s interesting to see where they come from,” he said. “When I was sorting them out and moving them around, I found some from New Guinea, Scotland, Ireland, England, Canada and Mexico.” Bacon is a member of the Brewery Collectibles Club of America, which has approximately 35,000 members. Gregory Gerke, vice president of the local BCCA chapter, the Indy Brewery Collectibles, heard of Bacon’s collection and brought him a few hundred cans. “I put together a bunch of newer stuff I thought he wouldn’t have or that he was unlikely to have, and I brought them over to him,” Gerke said. “Beer cans are fun. The collection itself is cool. I put them on walls and shelves and people come over and are amazed at how many different kinds of beer there are from foreign countries or beer just for women. It’s really cool.” “You have people who will bend over backwards for you, just like any other organization,” Bacon said. “It’s a big thing. People don’t realize how big it is.” The local BCCA chapter will host an event open to the public. Non-collectors can attend. The IBC Show will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Wyndham Indianapolis West, 2544 Executive Dr., Indianapolis. For more, visit ibcchapter.com.

Means of storage: Richard Bacon has between 10,000 and 12,000 collectible beer cans and hand-built six sets of 19 hand-built shelves for his basement to hold the cans. Each shelf is 8 feet tall and 8 inches wide. Favorite can: Bacon said he has several favorites because of color and value, but some include the Disco cans from the 1970s. “They’re just pretty and stand out,” Bacon said. “There’s six that are really ornate and they were made special for one guy, (Rick Haentjens), so they’re just like a specialty can.” Most expensive can: Bacon said he believes his most expensive beer can is a Barbarossa cone top can from 1940. He believes it to be valued at approximately $1,000. Collection’s worth: Bacon is unsure the exact price of his collection, but he estimates it to be about $30,000.

Goodbye, summer
o b s e r v a tion Celebrating centennial spirit
Commentary by Danielle Wilson
Commentary by Terry Anker At the turn of the 20th century, our own Hoosier state could claim one of its own as the sitting U.S. vice president. Interestingly, Charles Fairbanks could walk only two blocks to visit his friend, former President Benjamin Harrison. The streets of our state’s capitol were crowded with almost 160,000 citizens with new building projects already underway, inviting many more to join. Civic leaders had made impressive steps in the few decades since the war. And their aspirations for what Indiana could become were unbounded. With the celebration of our 200th birthday now behind us, Indiana is once again in a forward-looking posture. Hoosiers are notable in Washington. We have sent another son to serve as vice president, and with him have gone many Indiana men and women. So, come now the Sagamore Institute, our home-grown international think tank, to host Centennial Spirit. On Aug. 12, on the grounds of the Levy Mansion on North Meridian Street, as Dr. John Wernert, its vice president points out, “re-enactors and professional historians will discuss the importance of this era of Indiana citizenship.” Current Gov. Eric Holcomb will host the inaugural pinning of members of the “Society of Sagamores,” recognizing living recipients of our state’s high civilian honor, the Sagamore of the Wabash. I urge anyone interested in the event to join the fun – especially Sagamore recipients. For more, visit indianacitizen.com. Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. READER ’ S V I E W Trump like mythological Narcissus Editor, Mari Briggs’ letter on July 18 left me at first speechless, and then angry. She compares Donald Trump to strong men in the 1950s. Briggs must mean white men only, since minorities were marginalized and segregated, and women’s only career choice was to earn a Mrs. degree. Briggs praises Trump’s outspokenness, but I don’t remember any of the men back then lying as often as our current president does. “Telling it like it is” does not allow the President of the United States to pick Twitter fights with TV reporters, the mayor of London after a terrorist attack and insist that every unfavorable news story is “fake news.” When Trump isn’t telling a bald-face lie, he is contradicting previous statements, leaving his staff to scramble “1984”-style to rewrite history. Our nation was formerly viewed as a world leader. Now, thanks to Trump, we’re
becoming a laughing stock. Briggs mentions the Paris Climate Agreement in simplistic terms, conveniently forgetting that the U.S. is now one of only three countries in the world, along with the likes of Syria and Nicaragua, to not sign the agreement. Seasoned politicians and other world leaders, such as Germany’s Angela Merkel, have tried to explain to Trump that there is more to the treaty and funding formula, but their words fall on deaf ears. Trump is like the mythological Narcissus, always seeking his own reflection. When things go badly, he lies, covers his lies, tells more lies, and threatens our free press as if the First Amendment was merely a suggestion. I agree with Briggs that Trump is trying to return our nation to some Utopian 1950s, but if she would take off her rose-colored glasses, she might remember that those years were less than golden. Pamela Jackson, Noblesville
Oh. My. God. I’m down to my last four days of summer vacation and I’m starting to panic. Where did the humor time go? What happened to my grand plans for bingewatching “ONB,” “Master of None,” “West World” and “House of Cards?” What about my goal to return to school with at least the hint of a tan? Why are there still four home-improvement projects sitting in my garage, including a half-painted bead board and a discarded trellis I picked up curbside? Where did my acclaimed time-management skills disappear to these last few months? Are they hiding with my skin’s supposed supply of melanin? I know for those of you who work yearround or have young kids at home, June and July are just two more months to sweat through, but for teachers, I think I can speak for all of us when I say that these long days are much-needed for rest, rejuvenation and rediscovery of sanity. And when we have to turn the calendar page to August, it’s like mourning the end of “Breaking Bad.” We’re privileged to have been a part, and know there will be other shows that are just as good, but we’ll spend a solid week moping about in a world without Jesse Pinkman. That being said, my summer has been good, filled with travel, family and sleep. And despite my subpar performance at meeting my proposed Netflix quota, Doo and I did manage to catch up on “Turn,” finish “Bloodline” and get deliciously back into “Game of Thrones.” Perhaps that’s why the thought of school starting is skyrocketing my BP. Great summer breaks are that much harder to see end. Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a contributing columnist. You may email her at danielle@ currentincarmel.com.

Sitting pretty Commentary by Dick Wolfsie What has happened to the art of sitting? People nowadays don’t just sit; they have to be doing something. humor When I was young, people in my New York City suburb sat on their front porch, but they were mostly protecting their valuables or waiting for the police to arrive. English manors had sitting rooms. People did a lot of yakking to each other while they were sitting, conversing about the murder that just occurred in the garden or speculating about why the downstairs maid was spending so much time upstairs. These were talking rooms, not sitting rooms. Sitting isn’t wasting time: It’s how lazy people have made their impact. Hard-working folks didn’t come up with the idea for the backhoe, the chainsaw and the snow blower. No, it was the sluggish and indolent solving the world’s problems while completely at rest. Cracker Barrel Restaurant has tried to bring back sitting as an art form, lining their front porches with sturdy rocking chairs. Instead of sitting in them, though,
people are staring at the price tags or complaining about the 30-minute wait for the meatloaf special. Many Cracker Barrel customers sport suspenders and dangle toothpicks from their mouths. This is sit waiting to happen. Part of the charm of sitting on a porch is publicly displaying that you have the time to just park your rear in a chair. No bills to pay, chores to do or places to go. Sometimes, I sit in my driveway in a beach chair and wait for my wife to get home. When my neighbor Charlie sees me, he grabs a stool from his garage and plants himself next to me. Then he wants to chat endlessly about politics. Lately, I’ve mustered up the nerve to tell Charlie I’d rather be alone. Some people just don’t sit well with me. ••• Go to Indyfringe.org to see times and dates for Dick’s six performances of “The Art of the Jewish Joke.”

Yogurt myths – Yogurt is often marketed as helping digestion because of probiotics – the good bacteria that our guts need for good health. Bacteria affect our metabolism and obesity rates, among other things, so the connection seems logical. This may be true but scientists don't fully understand how the millions of bacteria already in our bodies work together. What we do know, though, is that most yogurts are packed with sugar, which contributes to obesity and other problems — so if you enjoy yogurt, find some that isn't full of empty calories. Artomobilia roars into Carmel Aug. 26
By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel Artomobilia has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 2008. “I think we started off with 42 cars cars,” event director and founder John Leonard said. “Over the years as the Carmel Arts & Design District has grown and blossomed, our event has as well. This year we’ll have 438 cars. We’ve got more sponsors and support from the community than we’ve ever had. We’re going to have a great event.” The IU Health North Carmel Artomobilia is set for noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 26 at Main Street and Range Line Road. ADESA is a presenting sponsor. “We’ve maxed out the capacity, so what we’re looking forward to is Monon Boulevard being put in place. Perhaps we can take advantage of that in future years,” Leonard said. “Rather than looking at how we can add more cars because we’re at capacity is how we can add cars that are more interesting, more unique, nicer

cars. We’ve seen the quantity has sort of plateaued because of the real estate. The quality continues to increase.” Leonard said there will be several body styles of Camaros. “We’ll have a collection of Camaros that are coming from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum,” he said. There will be a collection of cars called RestoMod, restoration plus modern parts/ technology. Troy Trepanier, a nationally recognized
custom car builder, will help judge the RestoMod Class. Leonard said the event has had several cars that have been winners at prestigious car shows. Leonard wants to make it an even bigger event to draw more visitors from surrounding states. “That’s why we added the Fuelicious event a few years ago,” Leonard said. “The combination of the two events gives us a broader reach of people that will come from St. Louis, Chicago and Louisville. They’ll come for a variety of things to do. We’re conscious people want a great experience. We’re growing the number of events in the future.” Fuelicious, an Indiana Children’s Wish Fund fundraiser featuring 50 distinct collector cars, will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Aug. 25 at Lucas Estate in Carmel. Artomobilia and Hoosier Salon have partnered to feature a plein air paint-out. Several Indiana artists have been chosen to paint around the cars. For more, visit carmelartomobilia.com.

Young bands sought for contest By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Pat Kniola has played in bands since she was in college, so she knows the importance of stage experience. So when St. Louis de Montmusic fort Fall Festival organizers asked her to coordinate the evening band schedule, she wondered if the stage could be used in the afternoon. “So it hatched as an idea to use the stage to let the kids get up there and bring some more people to the festival,” said Kniola, a member of The Fabulous Imports. This fall will be the eighth annual Battle of the Bands at the St. Louis de Montfort Fall Festival, 11441 Hague Rd., Fishers. The competition is set from 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 30. “We’re looking for teen bands, mostly like middle school to high school age,” said Kniola, a Fishers resident who coordinates the competition. As a contest sponsor, Azmyth Studios, an Indianapolis company, is offering a recording package for the grand prize winner. “That’s a blessing to have someone donate a nice prize that all the kids want to compete for,” Kniola said. “We have judges

who are local musicians who have played in bands, so they are well-versed in what it takes.” Kniola said the bands will gain experience playing as well as advice from other musicians. Although the high school bands normally win, Kniola said organizers don’t want to preclude younger bands from playing. The bands will likely perform 10 to 15 minutes of original material or covers. Kniola and John Dick will perform as Johnny Caribe and the Island Girl from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 30. Any bands interested in competing should email Kniola at pat@kniolas.com.

When to upgrade your van Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt It stinks getting tripped up by words, especially words which are practically identical. It’s like trying to grammar guy distinguish between a set of twins who look exactly the same except that one of them has a birthmark on the underside of his right pinky toe. This seems to be the case with long-lost word siblings then and than. An easy way to remember when it’s appropriate to use then is: then = when. As a general rule, you can use then as an adverb or an adjective with any sentence that has to do with time, what comes next, or what used to be. For instance, use then to replace at that time: I called you five minutes ago. Were you asleep then? In addition, use then to imply the next in time, space or order: First we will eat tacos and then we’ll dance in the fountain. Then can also be a substitute for words like accordingly or in that case: If you provoke that angry jellyfish, then you will probably get stung. Remember, then = when. Although than looks eerily similar to then,
its purpose is different. If then = when, then than = van. Allow me to explain: Do you or does someone you know own a minivan? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a van owner inspect someone else’s van in order to compare each other’s vans. For example: Wow, Dave, your van has dual DVD players in the back seat; your van is way cooler than mine. Than is used as a conjunction any time you’re making a comparison, as van owners often do: You didn’t get the heated leather seats? Mine is clearly better than yours. Remember, than = van. Let’s put it all together in order to help you determine the most opportune time to acquire a new minivan: If you want to have a fancier van than Dan’s, then you should probably buy the one with satellite Wi-Fi. LIFESTYLE Commentary by Don Knebel Visitors to Egypt often find their way to Saqqara and the famous stepped pyramid of Djoser, the forerunner of the travel Great Pyramids. Many of them miss the treasures of Memphis just to the east. Memphis, situated on the west bank of the Nile River, became the first capital of a united Egypt in about 3000 B.C. and developed into a major port city. Ptah, the god of creation, protected the city from his temple in the center. The name of Ptah’s magnificent temple, rendered in Greek, provided the name “Egypt” for the entire nation. After the Greek pharaohs established Alexandria in the fourth century A.D., Memphis began a slow decline and eventually fell into ruins. Ninth century Egyptian rulers used some of the rubble in constructing Cairo, about 12 miles to the north. Much of what remained found its way to museums around the world. Hatshepsut, Egypt’s first female pharaoh, is the largest alabaster sculpture ever found. The most popular item is an enormous statue of Ramses II, who ruled Egypt from 1279 to 1213 B.C. and is often considered the pharaoh of the Biblical Exodus. The intricately carved statue is almost 34 feet tall, without its missing lower legs and feet. Upon its discovery in 1820, the colossus was offered to the British Museum, which rejected it because of the huge costs of transporting it to London. Today, the statue lies on its back in an enclosure designed especially for it. Another large statue of Ramses II, once outside the temple of Ptah, stands erect nearby. If you get to Saqqara, don’t overlook the open-air museum of Memphis.
