IFAST gets boost from pro clients

1h <PaZ 0\Qa^VX “ mark@youarecurrent.com Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training had a special visitor this summer. FITNESS Prior to training camp, Indianapolis Colts tight end Dwayne Allen spent some time at IFAST working with owners Mike Robertson and Bill Hartman, both Fishers residents. Allen has had some injury issues the past two seasons. In the off-season, he went to EXOS, a high performance facility in Arizona. Robertson knows some EXOS employees and they suggested Allen contact IFAST so Allen started coming in June. “The goal is a multi-year plan for Dwayne,â€? Robertson said. “But the goal for this year was just getting him to feel 100 percent when he’s out there. You can imagine when you know you are going to run into guys 250 to 300 pounds all day long. I just tried to get him feeling comfortable, get him confident so he can perform at the highest level.â€? Robertson, 37, handles the training and Hartman, 49, also a sports performance coach, serves as IFAST’s physical therapist “Dwayne was a unique case where he needed a blend of both of our expertise,â€? Robertson said. Allen was the first Colts player to come to IFAST since it opened in August 2008. Robertson said Allen was the perfect Colt to be the first one. “Some pros are very business like and I get that,â€? Robertson said. “Dwayne shows up with a smile and gives everyone a high five. He has great energy and very charismatic and everyone enjoys having him around.â€? IFAST, 9402 Uptown Dr., Suite 1600, has

worked with Indy Eleven soccer players for two years. “It’s been awesome working with those guys and that in turn has led to a lot of other athletes coming in, Robertson said. “Where we can make our biggest impact is with these developing young athletes. We get ton of baseball, basketball, soccer and a handful of football. “ Robertson said they welcome athletes of all skill levels. “If they just want to move better, feel better and play better, we’re happy to work with them, Robertson said. “We try to teach these kids more about the training process because they may not play a professional sport, but we want them to be healthy for the rest of their lives so we teach them a lot of movement skills now that will carry over for the rest of their lives. Robertson said many of the athletes are middle or high school-aged ones. “We get pros from virtually every sport, Robertson said. “We trained (ex-Indiana Pacers center) Roy Hibbert for an off-season two years ago. We have four MLS players that come in during their off-season. Hartman said the athletes can enhance the business because of their popularity. “But our bread and butter is your typical Fishers area residents, Hartman said. “Our youngest client is 8 years old and our oldest is 88. Hartman said since IFAST started physical therapy in December 2013 that has become his primary focus. Along with the co-owners, IFAST has two full-time coaches, a part-time coach and an office manger. Men’s Health magazine has named IFAST, a top gym three out of six years.

Launch Fishers donates to HSE news@currentinfishers.com Just in time for the 2015-16 school year, the City of Fishers, in partnerSCHOOLS ship with Launch Fishers, announced on Aug. 10 that a donation of surplus computer equipment will be given to the Hamilton Southeastern School District. The equipment was a part of the new Launch Fishers building acquisition and was left by the previous owners. “The City of Fishers and HSE have a great partnership that works to better the lives of our students, Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness said. “I can think of no better way to serve our community than to provide resources and opportunities for our school district. In the spring of 2015, the City of Fishers purchased a new building for Launch Fishers that included excess furniture and computer equipment left behind from the previous owners, Deca Financial Services LLC. While much of the furniture and equipment is being repurposed by the City and Launch Fishers, the surplus computers will benefit HSE. In total, the City and Launch Fishers will donate over 100 personal computers with flat screen monitors, mouse devices and keyboards along with

an additional 60 flat screen monitors. “We have built a great relationship with HSE and we are excited to be a part of this donation, Launch Fishers CEO John Wechsler said. “This equipment will help educators and administrators at several schools do their jobs better without any significant cost to the school district. Ongoing partnership efforts between Launch Fishers, HSE School District and the City of Fishers are common in Fishers under the leadership of John Wechsler, Dr. Bourff and Mayor Fadness. Opportunities like this allow resources to be optimized, encourage the entrepreneurial culture in our community and support continued development of students in our school system.

Parks and rec hosts Senior Expo By Renee Larr “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]cX]UXbWTab R^\

On Aug. 20, Allisonville Meadows Assisted Living, in conjunction with SCHOOLS Fishers Parks & Recreation Department, will host the second annual Senior Expo. The informational open house will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fishers Public Library. The event hopes to bring seniors, ages 50 or older, together with vendors that provide senior services. “We really do it in an effort to connect seniors to resources and businesses that serve their needs and improve their quality of life in the area, Casey Cawthon, marketing and public relations assistant for Fishers, said. Providing information for senior services isn’t the only goal of the event. Seniors are encouraged to bring friends and family members along with them. “It’s very informational based. The goal is that all these vendors are set up so that seniors can just walk through and explore and get to know people. “It’s also very much about socialization, Cawthon said. Alpha Home Physical Therapy will provide refreshments. There is no cost to attend the event. Seniors can register to win raffle prizes

Cawthon echoes that sentiment in Fishers quest to include its senior community in events. “We have a lot going on in the city for different age groups but we want to make sure we have a dual focus not only on providing events for families and active people but also for seniors. They’re a very valuable part of the community and we don’t want them to get overlooked, Cawthon said. Fishers man to aid nonprofits

By Anna Skinner “ P]]P/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ A Fishers man, Steve Roseman, created two businesses in hopes of bringCHARITY ing the Indiana community together through charities and fundraising. The original business, Wedocharityauctions, led Steve to his new campaign, ALL Indiana. “I was introduced into the fundraising industry, it was a fun, new interactive way for people attending a lot of events to participate in giving money to charities, and in that process I started (Wedocharityauctions), Steve said. “A big common denominator is that organizations have money but don’t have the manpower to put on events or they have the manpower but no funds, so looking at all their challenges, we decided to do a 24-hour giving day, free for those organizations. We created a pretty amazing program. Steve wanted to create an event that brought nonprofits, the community and businesses together. The website, allindiana.org, is open for donations. On Dec. 9, the 24-hour giving day called ALL IN 24 will begin. Steve hopes to have around 1,000 local charities and raise $10 million. People can visit the website and donate to the charity of their choice. Steve’s wife, Wendy, has been supportive through his entire journey. “This business is Steve’s, I’m just his biggest fan slash advocate, this is his baby, Wendy said. “I launched ALL Indiana to bring Hoosiers together by aiding nonprofit organizations who are changing the lives of those in our community, Steve said. For any nonprofits in Indiana hoping to get involved, they can register on the website allindiana.org or send Steve an email at steve@allindiana.org.

“Pastor, I don’t understand how they could do this?â€? I have heard this despondent phrase so many times from very broken and FAITH surprised people. Families and friends are devastated when a very dark part of a genuinely good person becomes known. How does this happen? Obviously this can be quite complex, but I want to offer an interesting observation I have had over the last few years. People can become really mature in some areas of their lives and stay foolishly adolescent in others. Some examples: A medical doctor who is brilliant academically but relationally never grew up ... An elderly woman who has attended church her whole life, can quote massive amounts of scripture, but gossips like a 12-year-old girl. It’s not usually the mature parts that destroy someone. It’s the parts that never grew up. Here is the bad news – we all have them, little parts of us that never really grew up, that didn’t mature well, if at all. These little parts of us are often irrational and probably out of control. Unless you are a true sociopath you probably wish this part of you didn’t exist, but you don’t know what to do about it. Here is my advice. Work to mature the parts of your life that no one sees‌yet. Fix them before they blow up in your face. Take care of the dark spots before they grow so out of control they overtake the good reputation you spent years trying to develop. Most likely the difference between you and the “fakeâ€? is that your immature parts haven’t grown large enough to be exposed yet. In Genesis 4:7 the Bible says sin crouches at your door and desires to have you, but you must master it. Mike Colaw is the director of ministries at Trinity Church. Learn to fly at Indy Metro Airport By Sam Elliott “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]cX]UXbWTab R^\

Since 2007, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport in Fishers has been AVIATION home to a unique aviation experience for prospective pilots and fun-seekers eager to try their hand at helicopter flying. After a 15-year career as an engineer in the aviation and automobile industry, including stints at both Robinson Helicopter Company and Rolls Royce, Joe Newkirk decided it was “now or never to take to the skies himself in 1999. He became a commercial pilot and instructor and opened Freedom Helicopters as a side project in 2003 before going full-time with the company in 2007 at the airport in Fishers. Freedom Helicopters has trained hundreds of pilots through to FAA certifications for private recreational and commercial flying over the years, Newkirk estimated, but its most popular offering is the company’s $159 introductory flight – an experience that takes customers on an aerial tour of Indianapolis and even lets them take the controls. “That’s kind of our calling card to get people to come in and try it out, whether they’ve had flight experience before or not, Newkirk said. “We’ve probably done thousands of those introductory flight lessons if I had to guess. The majority of those people, they just wanted to try it and that’s perfectly fine. That’s one way for us to share the enjoyment of aviation with people and if it sparks an interest in someone,

A helicopter from Freedom Helicopters. (Submitted photo)

that’s great. We can provide all the training they want. After a half-hour session on the ground going over the helicopter basics and safety information, the introductory flight is a 25-minute tour around the city past sights like Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the state fairgrounds and the art museum’s outdoor sculpture garden, among others. “Obviously we don’t have the famous scenic things like the Grand Canon or Niagara Falls or mountains, but for people that have always lived here it’s something else to fly over their house or around downtown Indianapolis just to see things from a different perspective 1,000 feet up, Newkirk said. “You actually get to fly hands-on your first time up there, which is surprising to a lot of people. Obviously with an instructor sitting next to them and dual controls, but they’re amazed they can actually get to fly their first time in the helicopter. “It’s always fun to see the reaction on people’s faces.

The event will be held at the Heritage Park Ambassador House located at 10595 Eller Rd. at 7 p.m. Peggy Harger-Allen will speak about the lesser-known flowers and how they can be grown in the often unpredictable Indiana climate. The hardy perennial is mostly native to Asia. “Peggy is a hybridizer which means she starts them from scratch. These flowers traditionally bloom in May, and so she’s donated some of hers to the gardens. We’re in the process of planting those now. She has a lot of unusual varieties. Eddy’s to host golf fundraiser for leukemia

By Renee Larr “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]cX]UXbWTab R^\ On Aug. 27, Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill will host the 2nd Annual EVENT Eddy’s Golf Classic. The proceeds go to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Former owner of Eddy’s, Heather Foster, organizes the event. “I’m very active with Team in Training and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Foster said. “They go hand-in-hand. Team in Training is a group of participants who do endurance events like marathons, bike rides, and triathlons. They work to raise money for patients who have either won the battle or lost the battle with blood cancer. My mom has NonHodgkins Lymphoma, and I’m very happy to say she’s in remission. She is my motivation behind everything I do to raise money for L&LS. The event will be held Aug. 27 at Ironwood Golf Course.

“We are doing a wonderful grilled lunch that starts at 11 a.m. and then tee time is 12:30 p.m. Participants will get a golf shirt and hat, lunch and cocktails out on the golf course. A team

would consist of four, and it’s $600, Foster said. The main sponsor of the event is TA Smith Distributing and Bud Light. “They’ve been very gracious in donating funds to get this up and moving, Foster said. Individuals can still donate without participating in the golf classic. “Family Leisure donated a $2,500 grill. It’s sitting on the patio at Eddy’s. You can buy a raffle ticket for $5 or three for $25. And again, all that money goes directly to the L&LS, Foster said. The goal is to raise $10,000. Foster wants to thank Dave Stringer, current owner of Eddy’s, for keeping this tradition going. “Now that Dave Stringer is the owner of Eddy’s, he’s been very gracious in helping to keep this going. I have to give credit to Dave and to Eddy’s for being so supportive. Dave’s passion for the L&LS is just as much as mine, Foster said.

1h 0SP\ 0PbT] “ adam@youarecurrent.com Earlier this month, Hamilton County Council shot down plans to build a $3 million public safety training center, instead COUNTY approving funds by a 4-0 vote to build only one part of the project. The proposed plans call for a multi-story burn tower, 20-line weapons training and qualifications range and small building for classrooms, equipment and bathrooms on Glynn a 96-acre property on River Road in Noblesville. The cost had been estimated at $3 million for phase one and municipalities had been asked to cover $40,000 annually in operating costs for the training center. Every city voted to approve its share of the funding. Carmel took the longest and held the issue in committee to overcome some councilors’ reluctance but ultimately passed the proposal in March.

A majority of the County Council expressed concerns about escalating costs for later phases of the project, which are estimated at more than $40 million. Councilor Fred Glynn said the cities only agreed to help with operating expenses, but not cover the capital costs of construction. He worried that voting for the initial $3 million would put the county on the hook for a much bigger bill later. As a result, a counterproposal was suggested. Councilmen Paul Ayers, Brad Beaver, Fred Glynn and Rick McKinney voted to fund $568,000 to build the fire tower, which was part of the project. This move angered some other councilors, causing them to walk out of the room. “Walking out of room is nothing but political theatrics, Glynn said. Sean Sutton of the Carmel Firefighters Union said he was surprised by the vote and hopes that a compromise can be made in the future. He said the county sincerely needs a training center as a matter of public safety and that it can be built with no tax increase, pointing to the county’s sizable reserve fund.

Toasting back to school

FROM THE BACKSHOP

2 from GOP have a clue

We’ve been rather critical of the Republican presidential candidates, and we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the future of the two major parties. It dawns on us that perhaps the Republicans are actually going through a process in which they may be attempting to reinvent the party and platform. Say what you will about Donald Trump, but he’s acknowledging – perhaps not so eloquently at times – that he’s for real change; his lack of eloquence doesn’t bother us. We remember that eloquent politician back in 2008 that won the presidency, and look what it got us. Change? To be clear, we believe only Trump and, maybe, Carly Fiorina, are getting it; we would never go so far as to claim the Republican Party has a clue. That party has been taken over by liberals, hence the huge financial support of Jeb Bush. But the group that clearly doesn’t get it is the Democratic Party. Look at that pitiful field. An accomplishmentfree wife of a former president; a socialist; and a former governor no one thinks about. Same failed policies and ideas from the left. So pitiful is the field that there’s actually a movement to get Vice President Joe Biden in it. As pitiful as the Republicans are, at least they can claim their inclusion of a change agent or two. As for the Democrats, it would be the third term of Obama. “ “ “ Carmel is the latest municipality to attempt to get a law on the books that further protects residents from discrimination based on every conceivable criterion. A city council vote on Aug. 17 was to have spun it into law. We get why it’s being done. It’s a sad commentary, though, on how low society has plunged. Commentary by Danielle Wilson

No pain: Rite of passage? Commentary by Terry Anker The aphorisms of life make it easy for us to communicate complex statements in a sentence or two. Mantras, bumper stickers and t-shirts all serve to distill complex ideas down to single, easily digestible thoughts. Often they express truisms so overwhelmingly accurate that they are almost redundant. Yet we employ them to remind us that patterns of behavior can guide our actions into unknown or uncomfortable situations. Song writers and poets use them to effectively in framing thorny questions and challenging the basic suppositions of human interaction. “People are people said British band Depeche Mode in 1984. Quite right. But they push the obvious to ask if we are so much alike, how is it that “you and I get along so awfully? How can we be entirely similar and totally different in the same instant? Life is good – is my personal favorite. The truism reminds me that as long as we

live, we have all options open to us. We can change. We can learn. We can engage. Or, not. The phrase – encourages us by noting that even a bad day is still filled with opportunity. One might assume that its counterpoint must be death is bad? Perhaps. Or, is it just another step in life. The three little words have stuck with me for decades. While enjoying a vintage whiskey with a close friend one evening earlier this summer, he shared his chosen expression for good living – “no pain, no pain. The take on the more common “no pain, no gain echoed days later. Can we choose to live a life without pain? Can we simply let it pass through us without lament? Or, should we experience the pain as an earned right-of-passage? QUOTE OF THE WEEK Givers have to set limits because takers rarely do.

– Henry Ford

I’ve been belting out “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory tunes for a solid hour. Today especially is monumental because for the first time ever, all four HUMOR of our children were able to clamber up onto that beautiful yellow bus. After 10 years, 10 months, and 15 days, “I’ve got a golden ticket. Making this moment even brighter was the dark backdrop of summer. “Oompa, loompa, oompa-di-do. I’ve got an easy puzzle for you. What do you get when summer gets old? Ten fights a day and many tears to behold! Boredom set in as soon as early June came. I know exactly what’s to blame! Ah-ha. No school structure or routine! La la la la la la la! The first two weeks were nice, but evolved into the usual inconsistent schedules, lousy weather and friends out of town while we weren’t. Inevitably, these led to several Veruca Salt incidents, a whole herd of Mike TV impersonations, and one controversial Augustus Glute fiasco which I will not discuss here. I was often so frazzled that I just gave in. They tune in; I check out. That’s poor parenting at its finest. I don’t know about your kids, but mine fair much better when they have routine. Camp would solve the problem nicely if it weren’t for those pesky payments they’re so insistent upon. Twenty-five bucks per day per child? Forgetaboutit! So we turned to the next best thing— grandparents. One set luckily has a pool and a lake cottage, and the other a guilty conscience. “Who can make the sunrise and sprinkle it with dew? Cover it with chocolate and a miracle or two? The Grandparents can! No camps or grandparents? Cheer up, Charlie. “Oompa, loompa, oompa-di-do. I’ve got another puzzle for you. What do you get when August rolls in? Four kids in school and a mom in heav-en! Welcome back math, homework, reading and tests. Can you remember which is best? Yes, Ma’am! They’re all equally fabulous! La la la la la la la! Oompa, loompa, oompa-di-da. Find a school bus and you will go far. We can live in happiness too. Like the [jump for joy] kids with [clap your hands] year-round school do! Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a contributing columnist. You may e-mail her at danielle@currentinfishers. com.

IU Health North Hospital Carmel Artomobilia gears up

By Mark Ambrogi “ \PaZ/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\

IU Health North Hospital Carmel Artomobilia has come a long way from its modest beginnings in 2008. EVENT John Leonard, the event director and the founder, said the city of Carmel had a desire to bring people in the Arts & Design District in 2008 so they decided to put on a car show in June. “It was massively disorganized because we only probably only six or seven weeks to put it together,â€? Leonard said. “We had 50 cars and I don’t know how many people we had but we didn’t have that many people. But it struck a little bit of a chord. So fast forward seven years, we’ll have 403 cars and probably have 10,000 to 12,000 people that come from (all over the Indianapolis area). We’ll have car exhibitors from as far as Canada, Georgia, Cleveland and Chicago.â€? The seventh annual Carmel Artomobilia will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Aug. 29 in the Carmel Arts & Design District. Leonard, 47, said the purpose is to exhibit cars people might not see every day, promote the car hobby and the Arts & Design District. Leonard, a life-long car enthusiast, grew up in Brownsburg. He lived in Southern California before moving to Carmel in 2001. He has attended the Monterrey (Calif.) Car Week for 24

years. There are two groups, Judged Class cars, such as classic, European cars, Muscle cars, GT sports cars, which are positioned on Main Street. The other group is in Car Corral and those cars are positioned on Range Line Road.Â

“Our car show is a beauty contest, Leonard said. “We’re celebrating the art and design of the automobile. So we put them all together and try to decide which one is the best looking. The Car Corral is made up of auto enthusi-

asts so there will be owners from the Porsche Club, BMW and DeLorean Club. There will be 12 to 15 artists from the Hoosier Salon painting cars in different locations. There will be stages on the east and west end of Main Street with entertainment showcasing area talent from noon until 3 p.m. Carmel musician Blair Clark and his Fun Factor Band will perform on the main stage next to the Indiana Design Center, starting at 1 p.m. The awards ceremony will be at 3:30 p.m. For more information on the IU Health North Hospital Carmel Artomobilia, visit carmelartomobilia.com. Fuelicious benefits charity A charity event, Fuelicious: A Celebration of Wheels + Wishes, will be held at Lucas estate in Carmel from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Aug. 28. The event supports the Indiana Children’s Wish Fund. “We’re going to feature 50 hand-selected cars,â€? Leonard said. “We’re going to pair the cars. One of the neat pairings is a 1916 Detroit electric car and we’re going to pair that with brand Tesla. There will be 25 paired cars and the idea is to show the cars in a way you don’t normally see them.â€? Tickets and tables are available. Coming to the Beef & Boards stage: ‘South Pacific’

By Joseph Knoop “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]cX]UXbWTab R^\

There is perhaps no time more appropriate for a repeat viewing of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific PERFORMANCE than the modern American cultural climate, if you ask director Liz Stark. “It’s a classical piece without being classical, Stark said. “It’s something I always found odd growing up watching it. ‘Why would people have issue with the race of somebody they might be interested in?’ It still feels very relevant in today’s society. “South Pacific tells the story of two separate but similar romances during World War II. The first tells of an American nurse stationed in the South Pacific who falls in love with a French expatriate but struggles to accept his mixed-race children. The second portrays a romance between a U.S. Lieutenant and a young Tonkinese woman, both fearful for the consequences of their mixed-race relationship. “South Pacific will run for a total of 49 performances from Aug. 20 to Oct. 4 at the Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre at 9301 Michigan Rd, Indianapolis. Free parking is available. Tickets range from $40 to $65, and include an in-house dinner buffet and drinks. To make

Rodgers and Hammerstein both intended for “South Pacific to act as a progressive message on racism. “South Pacific originally premiered in 1949, just barely off the heels of war, to immense critical claim. Despite the progressive message, a number of theatres still enforced segregated seating. Stark, who is married to an African American, drew from her own experiences with discriminatory behavior. “I would think that most of society is OK

I announced my engagement on Facebook and I got a message from a gentleman from Texas that I didn’t even know, saying something along the lines of ‘Please don’t ruin your bloodline.’ That’s just awful that you would still get people out there who still feel that way or still have a problem with that sort of thing nowadays. Stark points to the song “You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught as one of the musical’s most meaningful numbers, emphasizing a character’s assertion that you have to be taught to hate people who aren’t like yourself. “You can be taught the littlest thing when

you’re [young] and somehow it’s embedded in your brain as you grow up, Stark said. Scotty’s Brewhouse Peanut Butter Pie. (Submitted photos)

Mack Lovin’ chocolate chip dessert at Mackenzie River Pizza.

First up is the Brew-Homemade Peanut Butter Pie at Scotty’s Brewhouse. After having tried many of Scotty’s delicious desserts, this one is really tops. The peanut butter pie contains a crunchy graham cracker crust, creamy peanut butter pie filling, whipped cream, and of course, chocolate syrup.

Next up is the Mack Lovin’ at Mackenzie River Pizza. This great dessert consists of warm chocolate chip cookies, served with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. It is served in a hot skillet and the cookies literally melt in your mouth. This one is pretty big so I recommend getting one for the whole table.

St. George festival back Sept. 19 By Joseph Knoop “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]cX]UXbWTab R^\ The world of Byzantine heritage, faith and culture is set to draw in attendees at this September’s St. George FesRELIGION tival at St. George’s Orthodox Christian Church in Fishers. St. George Church will bring Byzantine ethnic food, live music, a children’s carnival, a silent auction and more during the festival. Above all the attractions, the multicultural aspect of the festival and church is what parishioner David Sumner feels stands out the most. “Our church was established by immigrants from Syria in 1926, Sumner said. “We have three main purposes for the festival. Connecting Carmel’s sister city Commentary by the Lynda Pitz and the committee for the Carmel International Neptune’s Car: Holly Hanson and Steve Hayes. (Submitted photo)

Folk duo takes the stage

1h 9^bT_W :]^^_ “ news@currentinfishers.com There’s a truth to the inclusion of “folk in folk music. For Holly Hanson PERFORMANCE and Steve Hayes of folk duo Neptune’s Car, it’s about connecting to a whole community of them. Hanson and Hayes are planning to bring that sense of connection to them at their upcoming show in Noblesville at the Logan Street Sanctuary. “We’re not up onstage not interacting. It’s an intimate concert where we get to know everybody there and everybody knows us, Hanson said. Neptune’s Car’s recently released album “The 45th Parallel hit the No. 2 spot on the folk chart in February, while their song “Fly Fishing the Big Hole was awarded Outstanding Achievement in Songwriting in the folk/Americana category from the Great American Song contest. The album title is a reference to the latitude said to be halfway between the North Pole and the equator. “Lots of towns sit on that line, Hanson said. “One town in particular, Atlanta, Michigan, reminded us so much of New Hampshire. Some of our songs are stories people shared with us on the road. Many of Neptune’s Car’s song also derive from personal experiences Hanson shared with family.

“Our song ‘Lighthouse Keeper,’ that was one of the earliest songs I wrote, and at that time I was writing songs to teach my children, Hanson said. “We were studying about three different lighthouse keepers, and I thought it would be more interesting to give that lesson to them through a song. Hanson added that the duo’s spirits are high after the recent successes. “This year feels like our year, and that’s how we began the year, with this wonderful mood, Hanson said. Folk fans can hear for themselves on Aug. 23 at the Logan Street Sanctuary at 1274 Logan St. in Noblesville at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 per person.

Preparing for the season By Joe Drozda and Bob Bley The summer season is waning and one can observe the fields getting ready for harvest even though the temperatures still soar. If you look at the twilight, you notice it arrives earlier than back in June. Here in August the almanac is already predicting a cold winter. All this means one important thing, summer is almost over and football season is approaching. How long has it been since you thought of going to a football game? How long has it been since you looked at your tailgating equipment? Well, now it’s time to get ready. Here are some ideas to get your thinking process started: Get your equipment out of storage and make a checklist to evaluate it for sanitation and serviceability. Is there something you need to replace or even eliminate? Check for end of summer bargains. This time of year cookout and camping gear (tailgate equipment) generally goes on seasonending sales. Buffalo Chicken Salad Sandwiches You’ll have the approval from the under-40 crowd with this spicy chicken salad. Older folks can tone it down by topping the salad with ranch dressing or dip. It’s a big favorite for early-season lunch or dinner. How to control your cravings Commentary by Cory Black Experiencing strong food cravings that seem near impossible to control? Cravings that are out of control are NUTRITION typically the result of spiking and subsequently crashing blood sugar levels and will wreck havoc with your diet. When you regularly have large swings in blood sugar, two things happen. Your body will go into a storage mode turning sugar into more body fat while your energy levels plummet. As well your body increases hunger signals causing you to want to eat more than you really need, sometimes only a short time after your last snack. Spice up food or drinks with cinnamon. Research has shown that this spice has an effect on increasing insulin sensitivity when added to diets in the amounts of one to six grams to regulate blood sugar levels. Adding whey protein to your diet. Protein naturally stabilizes blood glucose levels and

is a healthy snack that will induce satiety and have the effect of reducing the swings that cause cravings. The supplement chromium polynicotinate. Chromium is an essential trace element our body needs for optimum health and is effective in increasing insulin sensitivity in our bodies. Our bodies have a difficult time absorbing minerals on their own, and chromium is combined with niacin (Vitamin B3) to form chromium polynicotinate, significantly boosting its absorption. Don’t let cravings keep getting the best of you. Start working on managing your blood sugar and over time you’ll regain control. As always, consult with your doctor before adding any new supplement to your diet, particularly if taking medications. Cory Black is the owner of PointBlank Nutrition in Carmel. He may be contacted at 569-5368 or cory@pointblanknutrition.com.

Blueprint for improvement: Open-porch feel Before

AFTER SOLUTIONS: 1. The new design makes sure the new porch doesn’t look like an add on 2. More usable outdoor space with seating for entertainment 3. New design keeps the porch feeling open. 4. Homeowner loves the new built-in cedar bench area. It’s great for lounging and reading and the cedar really adds a touch of warmth. 5. Loves being able to put lanterns and décor above the bench. 6. Worked with an existing retaining wall to create built-in cedar bench which also helped hide the transition from the house to the new covered porch 7. Had to use a mix of pavers and stamped concrete because of the columns but they ended up working well together 8. Client didn’t want it to look like an add on so it was a challenge to work with the existing windows and roof to make this happen, the carpenters did a great job

Full employment at Amber Fort

Livin’

Large

Commentary by Don Knebel

Visitors to Amber (or Amer) Fort, about seven miles from Jaipur, can see the magnificent palace of a sixteenth-century TRAVEL maharaja. They can also see how 21st century India is attempting to keep all its citizens employed. Maharaja Man Singh I was a Hindu who became an important general under Akbar, the religiously tolerant Mughal leader. In 1592, Singh began building Amber Fort as a fortified palace on a hill outside Amber, the capital of the area he ruled. The complex was expanded by his grandson, Jai Singh I, and became the largest fort in India. Today’s visitors can ride an elephant up the road to the entrance of the sandstone and marble fort. The designs inside combine Hindu and Mughal elements. The mosaic-covered Ganesh Pol, a three-story entrance to the living quarters of the Maharaja and his harem, honors Ganesa, the elephant-headed god of new beginnings. The interior walls of the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) are covered with convex mirrors designed to shimmer in candlelight. An important temple honors Shila Devi, a Hindu goddess. The floor of the main courtyard of Amber

Fort is covered with a mixture of water and cow dung called “gobar.” The flooring must be occasionally replaced, a job usually reserved for women. The women, all colorfully dressed, carry the paste-like gobar on their heads and spread it thinly on the floor. Other women, some with small children in tow, sit in a row behind the freshly applied gobar, tamping it with long paddles until it hardens and they can move forward for the next batch. The task could be done more efficiently with machines, but providing work for India’s citizens may

require that such inefficiencies be ignored. Amber Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site. A popular backdrop for Bollywood movies, it has become Jaipur’s favorite tourist destination.
