Noise from boats on Geist Reservoir draws attention of residents, law enforcement. (File photo)
FPD gets word out on Geist noise ordinance By Matthew Kent news@geistcurrent.com Educating the public about a noise ordinance in Fishers remains a top focus for law enforcement because RESERVOIR of occasional complaints from residents living along Geist Reservoir about boaters in the area. Fishers Police Dept. Maj. Mike Janes said the city hasn’t necessarily seen an annual increase in the number of noise complaints, but noted that the volume of complaints typically goes down as more people learn about the ordinance. Janes also said law enforcement officials try to give warnings as part of the department’s role in educating boaters who might be unfamiliar with the ordinance. “We’ll take enforcement action as necessary, but certainly by educating boaters, we want to create a safe environment for everybody that’s out on the water,” Janes said. “A lot of people aren’t aware of the noise ordinance.” According to the ordinance, any noise coming from a boat or watercraft that exceeds 80 decibels from the shoreline or water’s edge is in violation. Individuals can either be given a warning or issued a citation, which carries monetary penalties. The
police department carries a decibel meter on its boats to monitor noise levels, according to Janes. The police department will also field occasional complaints regarding music that callers might consider inappropriate, Janes said. “We can’t regulate the content of the music, but we can certainly regulate the noise coming from the watercraft,” Janes said. Janes added that other common issues the department deals with are related to wake-zone violations, meaning that boaters or watercrafts are exceeding 5 mph in designated areas on the lake. That remains an issue since Geist Reservoir has floating docks, which “creates a dangerous situation for people on the docks,” Janes said. “We just want people to be operating the boats in a safe manner,” he said. “If they’re not operating in a safe manner, we want to take action.” Marie Ippolito, president and director of the Geist Harbours Property Owners Association, did not respond to an inquiry about boating and related noise complaints. But Ken Kaiser, who also serves as a director for the GHPOA, said as an officer, he isn’t allowed to express an opinion on behalf of the association. Kaiser said he doesn’t have an issue with
noise on Geist Reservoir. “Personally, as a homeowner and boat owner with lake access, I have no problem with the noise,” Kaiser said. Janes encourages residents who live on Geist Reservoir to call the department’s non-emergency number as necessary so officers can investigate noise complaints. Janes also noted that Indiana law requires someone other than the operator of a boat to watch individuals who may be wakeboarding or skiing behind a boat. That is also an occasional violation that law enforcement deals with, he added. “It’s certainly one that we want to make people aware of that they have to have a separate observer on the boat to be able to do that,” Janes said. Janes also said from a law enforcement perspective, he wants to make Geist Reservoir a safe and fun environment not only for homeowners, but for boaters as well. “We just want people to be operating their boats in a safe manner,” Janes said. “We don’t want to be out there because of a boat crash or because somebody has fallen overboard and not resurfaced, so for us, it’s being proactive and being visible out there to help kind of deter dangerous actions by people.”

Vandalism forces early closing of Fishers Parks restrooms By Will Riddell will@youarecurrent.com A number of Fishers Parks venues are closing their public bathrooms at 8 p.m. each day because of a recent increase in vandalism inside the facilities. The parks with 8 p.m. restroom closings are: • Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve • Flat Fork Creek Park • Mudsock Fields • Brooks School Park • Cumberland Park • Billericay Park. Additionally, restrooms at Nickel Plate
District Amphitheater will only be open for large events at the venue, according to a Fishers Parks Facebook post. “Based on what we know at this point, we believe these acts of vandalism are being committed by unsupervised juveniles,” Tom Weger of the Fishers Police Dept. said. Weger said that the issues have included tipped over trash cans, graffiti and damaged property inside the facilities. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity by calling either 911 or 317773-1282 (non-emergency). An online form for reporting vandalism can be found at bit.ly/3Odcu3V.

Spark!Fishers set to kick off summer By Taylor Dixon news@currentinfishers.com

Of all the things we’ve grown, our legacy is the one we’re most proud of. Thanks to our friends, customers, and staff for a wonderful 90 years. Engledow.com
Spark!Fishers will light up the town June 21-25, and this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever. The EVENT festival, which was on hiatus in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, is entering its fourth year and will have something for every member of the family. “I really enjoy seeing the community come together for these events,” said Sarah Sandquist, director of Fishers Parks and Recreation. “Seeing everybody out really kicks off the summer as this huge event, bringing people to the downtown area and the variety of opportunities that we have.” A free concert by the White River Wind Symphony at the Nickle Plate District Amphitheater June 21 kicks off the event. The symphony will perform a medley of patriotic songs to usher in next month’s Fourth of July weekend. The annual Spark!Fishers 5K run/walk, which will be family friendly and stroller accessible, takes place June 22. Contestants will race through Fishers and the Nickle Plate District. For pricing and to register for the event, which is open to adults and kids 8 and up, visit Fishers Parks and Recreation website at sparkfishers.com. Younger kids will also be able to get their turn with the Kids Fun Run-30 Yard Dash before the 5K. Registration for that event is $10. A car and art show will be presented June 23. Organizers expect a record number of cars, with 50 already signed up. Resident artists from the Fishers Art Council will also disply their art. On June 24, a Bruno Mars Tribute band, Uptown Funk, will perform a free concert on the amphitheater stage. On June 25, the popular Spark!Fishers street fair, parade and fireworks will be presented. Live music will be performed throughout the day on the amphitheater stage, community stage and the solo stage. A larger kids’ zone will be set up with separate areas for toddlers and teenagers. The zones will include inflatables, a mobile skate park, yard games, a Ferris wheel and other activities. Wristbands will start at $3. Continued on Page 5

Continued from Page 4 Parents are encouraged to pick them up before June 24 at the Parks office at 8100 E 106th St, Suite 150, Fishers. The parade will begin at 6 p.m. and continue through downtown Fishers. The event will culminate with fireworks at dusk. “I think events like this create a sense of place for residents,” Sandquist said. “They build community, they get people involved. We have over 12 (volunteers) and we’ll log over 1,200 volunteer hours on Saturday alone with Spark fishers and the number of volunteers that we utilize. So even if you’re not coming as a participant, there’s so many other ways to get involved with the events, and that just helps build community.” More than 100 food and art vendors will be on-site the final day. Food trucks and vendors will also be on-site throughout the event. Shuttles will be available again this year. They will depart from the conference center and drop riders off in front of First Internet Bank, one of the event’s biggest sponsors. Shuttles will run every 10 minutes from 1:30 p.m. to midnight. Lawrence resident uses Miss Indy Juneteenth platform to share message of hope By Will Riddell will@youarecurrent.com Teresa Clay’s life has been packed in recent weeks with many wonderful, surprising moments. She’s enjoying the journey that life’s taking her on. But that wasn’t always the case for the Lawrence resident, who was recently crowned Miss Indy Juneteenth. Clay Clay grew up in St. Louis, where she said she suffered abuse at a young age that left her traumatized. She was placed in foster care as a teenager and said her time in foster care helped mold her into the person she is today. “(Foster care) was a second chance at life,” Clay said. “And I’m telling you, ever since then, I just don’t take any second for granted. I know that I’ve been given a second chance.” Now 42, Clay continues to capitalize on that second opportunity. She was crowned Miss Indy Juneteenth on May 29 at Marian University in Indianapolis. The event was presented by Indy Junteenth, Inc. “I think I stood up there for like 30 seconds with my mouth open,” said Clay, who has done some modeling in the past but had never competed in a pageant. “There are no good pictures from that moment.” According to the Indy Juneteenth website, the pageant’s mission is “to celebrate the Black woman in all of her shades, curves, and magic.” This was the second year for the pageant. Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrated annually on June 19 and is dedicated to celebrating the liberation of Black Americans from slavery. The Miss Indy Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant is among the events held in the Indianapolis area to celebrate the holiday. One of Clay’s focuses for the competition was to celebrate her heritage. For the creative portion of the contest, she wore a cape that was inspired by her ancestry. She wore a handmade African garment under the cape. “My goal was to encourage people to do their AncestryDNA, to truly get to know who they are and to embrace who we are,
From left, Miss Indy Juneteenth contestants, Alexys Stanislaus, Eboni Duff, Alicia Sims, Teresa Clay and Brittany Jones. (Photo courtesy of Indy Junteenth Corp.)
and that’s something to be proud of,” said Clay, a single mom who works as a licensed optician. Her search on AncestryDNA.com did more than shed light on her heritage. Clay had a sister she was unaware of. They have the same father. “That was a journey, but she is now one of the closest people in my life,” Clay said. “She’s really truly brought (my family) together. It’s been an amazing journey.” Winning Miss Indy Juneteenth was another giant step for Clay in moving on from her difficult childhood. “For a long time in my life I felt unseen,” Clay said. “I felt unseen, and that’s what childhood trauma can do. It makes you feel like you’re just in the background of life.” Clay said she wants to let others know
that moving past trauma is possible. “It’s an ongoing healing, but you can do it,” Clay said. Clay will be part of an upcoming documentary, “Take Good Care,” which will showcase the different lives of individuals who survived childhood trauma. The project is being produced by Vanessa Roth and Alexandra Gray, who also directed 2001’s “Close to Home,” another film that Clay was involved with that addresses childhood abuse. The new documentary will be released on a streaming platform (when?), according to Clay. Clay appreciates Juneteenth because the holiday celebrates African Americans moving past traumatic experiences, as she herself has done. And while there is cause for celebration, Clay said improvement still
needs to be made so that Black communities may thrive. Clay said she encourages everyone to participate in Juneteenth celebrations. She said that change will start to take place when people aren’t afraid to know their neighbor, even if that neighbor has a different skin color, a different cultural background or a different life experience. “Get to know us,” Clay said. “Get to know our culture. Come out. Be a part of what’s happening. That’s love. Love is that you can celebrate with me.” For more, visit indyjuneteenth.com/. Teresa Clay can be followed on Instagram @teresalovesall. False alarms?
The truth of it is
9
Commentary by Terry Anker
Commentary by Danielle Wilson
“This is so very important that nothing else matters! Our ends assuredly justify the means. We are smart people. We have spent some time thinking about this problem. And we know that we have the only correct solution.” So goes the narrative. Agree with us, or those opposing are open to all manner of attack, polite or otherwise. Many imagine that others, with differing points of view, are stupid, evil and deserving of rebuke. It is all so very convenient to dismiss them, to vilify those who are otherwise not villains. Truly, there are a handful of critical realities where personal space must be allowed. But do we often restrain the behavior of other adults only to force them to conform with our current state of mind? History is littered with tales of our certainty gone wrong. Countless heretics died only to be proven correct only a few years later, small consolation. Still, we collectively tolerate the intolerance. Social media is rife with the clarion call: This is so important that the rules don’t apply; I’m so important that the rules don’t apply; I’m in such an emotional state that the rules don’t apply. Even so, isn’t there some value in adhering to a minimum standard? When are we able to suspend social order? How extreme must be the case? Have we slid too deep into the morass when we each decide what we can say to others and not to what we will allow them to say to us? When words are called violence and legislative votes are called murder, how do we confront actual violence and actual murderers? Are they the same thing? If we find ourselves always on high alert, when do we start ignoring the sounding of the alarm? Are we destined to miss a genuine warning?
Summer is in full swing, and I for one am already doing my darndest to hide from my children. I know, I know — some of you are already screaming, “You’re such a terrible mother!” But really, I’m just being honest, and I think most parents will appreciate my perspective: It’s all fun and games until it’s not, somewhere around mid-June. Sure, those first couple of weeks are grand. My coeds are home from school, we’re enjoying the laidback vibes of late mornings and no real schedules, and the flighty Indiana weather is finally cooperating. Our six-pack is generally kind to one another, and in the spirit of family reunited, we ignore the irritating idiosyncrasies of each other. But like our usually low Meijer bill, harmony will not last. Now, all I can do is focus on the noise and the mess and the never-ending loads of laundry. I get swept up in their sibling drama and inevitable boredom and pleas for cash. I can’t get a single moment to myself because someone, somewhere always seems to need me. Why? Did I not raise you to be independent? Go. Away. Too soon I find myself longing for August, when my time and my house will once again become my own. When communication with my darling offspring will equate to periodic check-ins via FaceTime. When I can return to an “outof-sight, out-of-mind” mentality and not obsess over the occasional bad choices my young adults will most certainly make. When a half-gallon of milk has a decent chance of expiring in the fridge. Terrible mother? Probs. But at least I’m honest. Peace out.

There is hope for those living with Alzheimer’s disease Editor, I am one of the estimated 110,000 Hoosiers currently living with Alzheimer’s disease. June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, and I would like to share a bit of my experience to help others understand this disease. • It is possible to live well with dementia. Being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is life changing. When in the early stage of the disease, we can still function independently and continue doing the activities we enjoy. • If you want to know how I am doing, just ask me. I have shared my knowledge and experience with friends and family. Their prayers have helped me live and work through my diagnosis. Though I may sometimes forget your name, please know I still appreciate you asking how I am doing. • Understand that sometimes words and actions of people with Alzheimer’s are
not how we would choose to act. There are times where I may interrupt you because I am worried I will forget what I want to say in that moment. As dementia progresses, we may experience anxiety, aggression and confusion. You can learn about what to expect by visiting the Alzheimer’s Association website at alz.org. • Dementia and Alzheimer’s are well-defined illnesses. They differ from the challenges with memory due to aging. Talk with your doctor to get proper testing. • There is hope! Dementia and Alzheimer’s researchers have made incredible advancements. I am grateful to currently be involved in a clinical trial. If interested, talk with your doctor about available studies. Call the free 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900. Patricia Bishara, Carmel

2011 DADillac For Sale On March 17, 2022, our dad was called home to begin his eternal life free of pain and illness. What he left behind was a family who loved him, friends that will miss him and a legacy of memories that we can never forget. One of his items for which we are seeking a new home is his car that he cherished. He owned a 2011 Cadillac DTS which was his pride and joy. Having grown up and raised his family in a town dominated by General Motors, his goal was to “Climb the Ladder” as he would say regarding the GM family of cars. In the 1960s, he kept the garage occupied with Chevys and Pontiacs. In 1973, he graduated to Oldsmobiles, and they dominated the rest of the ‘70s. Always, he kept his eye on the Cadillac one day being the ultimate prize. Then, in 1985 he made it to the top when he was able to buy a used 1982 Eldorado. From that day forward, the only car he steered was a Cadillac. He liked the big ones, primarily Sedan Deville because, “You are always safer in a big car.” He liked to run them through car washes regularly because “A clean car always seems to run better.” We have had his 2011 DTS Sedan checked out by a master technician and a local tire store in Carmel. Both said that this would be a good used car for anyone looking for size and a little old-school styling. Includes Dad’s 2006 Rand McNally Road Atlas at no additional cost.

Older Hoosiers can save lives Commentary by Kellie Tremain Did you know the oldest Hoosier to give the gift of life was 103 years old? You are never too old to ORGAN DONATION register to be an organ and tissue donor. May was Older Americans Month, a time to reflect and celebrate the contributions of Indiana’s older residents and increase awareness about aging and its related issues. Hoosiers 50 and older enrich the lives of their family, friends, loved ones and communities. Many have saved lives as organ, tissue and eye donors while many others in this age group have been given a second chance at a healthy life through organ or tissue transplant. There is a myth out there: Many Indiana residents over 50 mistakenly think they are too old or not healthy enough to be an organ and tissue donor. That is often not the case. Here are the facts. More than one-third of all deceased organ donors in the U.S. are over 50. In 2021, of the 13,863 donors in the country, 5,254 – or nearly 38 percent – were people 50 and
older. When Norma Berkey, of Goshen, died in 2020, she saved lives as a tissue donor and became the oldest Hoosier to ever do so. There are no restrictions for registering to be an organ and tissue donor, and that includes one’s age and medical history. The priority of a physician is to save your life. Your donation status does not affect your medical care. A separate team of medical professionals determines your donation status, not the team of physicians and medical staff responsible for your immediate medical care. This separate team determines if you are a viable organ donor and if you can be a donor. Being an organ and tissue donor, no matter your age, can be your legacy. Giving the gift of life is truly the greatest gift you can ever give. Kellie Tremain has served as president and CEO of Indiana Donor Network since December 2012. She is the third CEO of Indiana Donor Network since it was formed in 1987. As CEO, Tremain champions the organization’s mission to save and enhance as many lives as possible through organ, tissue and eye donation.

A new restaurant with a unique concept is opening later this month in Fishers. Room Service on Wheels, at 11110 LanFOOD tern Rd., offers customers a different kind of dining experience. Owners Randy De John and Mike Nash decided to open the restaurant with a “ghost kitchen” after they noticed common trends with popular food delivery services. A “ghost kitchen” is a restaurant that offers delivery and takeout only. Customers can pickup orders from the to-go window, curbside pickup, the outdoor patio or the delivery service. As a “ghost kitchen,” there is no indoor seating. The delivery area is 2.5 miles. The catering menu is available for areas outside of the delivery region. Delivery drivers represent the most unique aspect of the restaurant. They do not all use cars to deliver orders. Some use other vehicles, such as bikes, mopeds and golf carts. Room Service on Wheels offers menu items from pasta to pizza to salads and wraps. It also offers hot and cold sandwich-
es and burgers. All ingredients are made from scratch and never frozen. “About a year and a half ago, Mike and I were ordering takeout a lot,” De John said. “We came up with an idea based on the flaws of the popular delivery services.” De John said most delivery services have high service fees. Room Service on Wheels does not charge excessive fees. De John and Nash wanted to create menu items that travels well and quickly. For example, pizza box nachos are designed to keep the chips from getting soggy during delivery. The owners felt that because most delivery drivers are contracted out, the delivery experience is not as personal. They wanted customers to have a pleasant experience with their delivery drivers. “Our drivers come to the door with name tags on,” De John said. “All of our drivers are part of the company. They hand it to the customers instead of just dropping it off and sending a picture of it.” The first restaurant is set to open in later this month. De John and Nash plan to open at least six additional restaurants in the next five years.

YAP students show versatility in cabaret show By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Abigail Judy is finding a lot to like about her first Young Artists Program experience with Civic Theatre. PERFORMANCE “What I love most is getting the opportunity to work with such great directors and meeting new people,” said Judy, who will be a Carmel High School junior in August. The YAP’s “REVUE!” is set for 6 and 8 p.m. June 28 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. “My favorite number that I’ve learned so far is ‘Holding Out for a Hero,’” Judy said. “The music is super fun and we do a lot of really great harmonies. The people in this number are super fun to work with and I think it will be one to the best.” One challenge is learning the numbers because rehearsals didn’t start until earlier this month. “It takes a lot of hard work and commitment to learn everything and put it all together in such a short amount of time,” she said. Anne Beck serves as YAP director. Johnna Tavianini is the music director and Kenny Shepard is the director. All three are Ball State University colleagues. “Kenny and Johnna are a power couple when it comes to putting this show together,” Beck said. “They are both a wealth of knowledge of musical theater songs from all kinds of shows. They always put together an amazing mix of songs people know along with ones not so well known to educate the audience and enlighten us with great material not as well known. “This year they did it again and Johnna also has put together some fabulous mash-ups. She is extraordinary at that.” Beck said there is an array of soloists in this year’s cast of 13. “So, it is an exciting year for the show chock full of such great talent,” Beck said. Tavianini said Shepard came up with creative questions for cast members based on some overlying, universal themes that all have to do with being teenagers.

“By using their responses, he crafted a personalized script with the music that we’ve chosen supporting the stories that our cast members are going to share with the audience,” Tavianini said. This is Tavianini’s second year as music director for “REVUE!” “This year and last year I have been just blown away with the work ethic of the young cast and am immensely proud to see the steady growth in each of them as performers,” Tavianini said. “I love being able to set the bar high and getting to take them all by the hand and help them get there.” Tavianini said part of her job as music director is to make sure that all cast members sing music that supports their stories. “I love writing the arrangements and personalizing the music to serve the group in front of me,” Tavianini said. Tavianini and Shepard worked together for the first time last year on “REVUE!” “We are all so lucky to have Johnna on board,” Shepard said. “She really is a genius at making these young artists sound like stars while propelling their unique
stories through music.” Having only 10 rehearsals is a challenge to learn all the songs and monologues, Shepard said. “Another challenge, which I love, is making sure each artist’s voice is heard and each story is told authentically,” he said. “All 13 of them answered a long list of questions for me, and I took their experiences about social media, dating, family, friendships, bullying and other topics and wrote a script, often using their words verbatim as monologues.” Shepard said the song “Children Will Listen” from “Into The Woods” is powerful. “The lyrics and Johnna’s arrangement work so well to further the stories many of them are telling,” Shepard said. “These performers are very brave sharing personal experiences about racism, dating as a member of the transgender community and being bullied. I respect their honesty and openness more than I can say. The social media section is also an eye-opener to me. These teenagers communicate and validate each other in ways that are so foreign to other generations.”

Mystery spoof set at Red Barn By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com “Murdered to Death” suits Luke McLaughlin just fine. “I enjoy the murder mysTHEATER tery genre and it has a comedic spin to it as well,” said McLaughlin, who is directing the production at the Red Barn Summer Theatre. “I enjoy putting those two things together. As an English teacher, there are a lot of references to classic literature and Agatha Christie that I appreciate and enjoy.” “Murdered to Death” runs June 22 through July 2 at the Frankfort venue. The show is a spoof of the Agatha Christie whodunit genre set in an English Manor. “It’s a fun script, a nice mix of mystery and comedy,” said McLaughlin, a Frankfort resident who teaches at Clinton Prairie High School. “I’ve seen it on a stage before and when I saw it, I thought this is a great show I wanted to either direct or be in one day.” McLaughlin is pulling double duty. Michael Taylor, Red Barn’s artistic director and a Frankfort High School theater teacher, directed the high school production. Words don’t pass smell test Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt Have you ever crossed paths with a While I’ve never come nose-to-tail with a skunk, I’ve taken notice where one has raised a stink, so to GRAMMAR GUY speak. What gives a skunk its spunk? I don’t know — but I can tell you all about skunked terms. Take the word “biweekly,” for example. Traditionally, biweekly has meant “every two weeks.” Your job may pay you biweekly. Although this is what the word originally meant, people have come to understand “biweekly” to mean “twice a week.” Biweekly is a classic example of a skunked term, a phrase coined by lexicographer Bryan A. Garner in 2008. A skunked term is a word that becomes tricky to use because it is transitioning from one definition to another. Whether it’s correct or not, the trending usage of biweekly makes it a confusing word to use. What I’m suggesting is that we hit the pause button on using skunk terms. Since the words we choose are critical in
making our communication clear, using a word that is transitioning from one definition to another is distracting, if not downright confusing. Here are some more examples of skunked terms. “Decimate” originally meant taking out one-tenth of an enemy’s army; now it has come to mean totally destroying something. A “factoid” used to be an untrue statement that many believe to be accurate; now it means a small fact. Confusing, right? Originally the term “disinterested” meant “unbiased,” while now many use it to mean “uninterested.” Similarly, the word “nonplussed” originally meant surprised and confused, while many people use it today to mean unconcerned. Because these words are somewhere between their original meanings and their “trending” meanings, they’re skunked.
