Al Huda Foundation opens new mosque in Fishers Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com The largest congregation of Muslims in the state has opened its new $8.8 million mosque. After three years of planPOLITICS ning and construction, on June 4 the Al Huda Foundation opened Al Huda Masjid at 12201 Lantern Rd. “Masjid” is the Arabic word for mosque. According to Hosam Wanas, the general contractor for the project, the mosque “complements the city’s futuristic vision,” and is designed to be one of – if not the most -- beautiful mosques in the nation. The new mosque is an expansion for the Al Huda Foundation. It had previously been gathering for worship inside the school on the same property. Now, the school will be the only use for the older building. Among the mosque’s prominent features are three domes made of gold-plated fiberglass. The main dome has a radius of 30 feet while the two smaller domes have a radius of 18 feet. It took four months to construct the domes and took a team of technicians 25 days to install them. Twin minarets tower 60 feet, flanking the entrance. Inside the musalla, or main prayer hall, hangs -- under the main dome -- a massive chandelier, 14 feet wide and weighing 1,200 pounds. The chandelier, like the other chandeliers inside the mosque, was custom built by Egyptian master craftsmen. It is made of copper and plated with 18 carat gold. The musalla is the largest room on the property at 13,000 square feet, with 28-foothigh ceilings. It can hold approximately 400

people. The floors are blue with intricate weavings of gold and white. White represents purification in Islam, and blue and gold were selected by the contractors. The carpet is from Turkey. There are two floors inside the musalla, one on the carpeted area at ground level and on a balcony above. The separation is intentional, as during the main prayers men and women are separated, with women in the balcony and the men on the ground level. A glass-enclosed elevated platform is built into the back wall, where the imam, Dr. Nasser Karimian, will offer teaching and lectures. “It will allow me to address the entire congregation,” said Karimian, noting that the platform will make him eye-level with the women in the loft.

continue deliver to a different 25 percent of the community. That means, in a fourweek month, a different quadrant of the community each week will receive Current by mail. In addition, our practice of making the newspapers available in their entirety online ensues and never will change. It’s starting to appear that we’ll be able to return to weekly circulation at 100

The musalla’s back, eastern wall is largely white, with gold stars and wooden geometric designs. A golden Quranic verse caps the wall outlined by a long blue stripe. The verse was crafted by hand out of wood. An 18-foot-tall niche -- called a mihrab -- punctures the back wall to direct the congregation toward Mecca. Inside the mihrab, on the inside of the main dome and throughout the mosque, are intricate designs and Quranic verses, each designed, drawn and painted by Indianapolis-based artist Jessica Hancock. “It is my Sistine Chapel,” Hancock said. Hancock spent four months drawing and painting the spaces. There are frosted designs on 28 of the windows that are her work, too. “I remember what it was when I first saw it, when there were no windows and no doors. It’s fun to see what it is today,” Hancock said. “But, personally, to have the opportunity is a privilege and a blessing. I will probably be forgotten at some point, but the work won’t be and the inspiration that it provides won’t be, and that’s everything. That’s wonderful.” For Wanas, the contractor who oversaw the building’s construction, the most special moment came when the community got to see the mosque for the first time on June 1. It was a festival atmosphere with balloons, food, bounce houses and an outdoor market. “It is a great feeling. When I looked to the community and I saw the happiness in their eyes and everybody smiling and I felt that the mosque is finally completed, I felt grateful,” Wanas said. “The mission is completed.”

Path to Fitness 5K registration is open By Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com McCordsville’s Path to Fitness 5K returns Aug. 14. The deadline to register and receive a medal and T-shirt for the seventh annual event is June 30. “I hope to see it as successful as 2019,” WELLNESS McCordsville Town Manager Tonya Galbraith said. The 5K was conducted virtually last year because of COVID-19 restrictions. Only 25 people participated. The event traditionally has about 100 participants, and Gal-

braith expects a rise in participation for this year’s 5K. “The 5K serves as a fundraiser for our ‘Building a Brighter McCordsville’ fund, which is through the Hancock County Community Foundation, which helps us with yearly grants for parks’ needs,” Galbraith said. The grants have been previously used to install Wi-Fi at park shelters and to construct an outdoor grill. The inaugural run was conducted after a path along 600

Cartoonist Campbell sweeps state SPJ awards Cartoonist Tim Campbell has been a fixture in Current Publishing newspapers since Current in CarmACHIEVEMENT el’s debut in October 2006. “It was the second issue I was in the Current,” said Campbell, adding Current was the first newspaper to publish his cartoons. The Carmel resident earned the top three spots Campbell in the 2020 Indiana Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists Best in Journalism Awards June 14 in a virtual ceremony. “I’m very honored to have won the award for Best Editorial Cartoon in the state again,” Campbell said. “It’s the ninth time I’ve won it in the last 12 years, but this is the first time I’ve swept all three places in the category. One strange angle to all of this is that the Pulitzers chose to not give an award for Editorial Cartoons (for 2020). I think the people in our profession did their

most outstanding work in 2020. I guess that makes winning the Indiana SPJ award even more special.” His first-place cartoon was “Top Ten Moments of 2020” and his second-place cartoon was “Facebook Grip” His third-place cartoon was “Beware of Dog.” “We’re ecstatic for Tim,” said Steve Greenberg, executive vice president of Current. “He has the perfect combination of outstanding talent, awareness and sharp wit, and the judges obviously concurred. These awards are very well deserved.” Campbell said he always submits five cartoons and agreed “Top Ten Moments of 2020” was his best. Campbell is syndicated through Washington Post News Service and Syndicate. The SPJ awards are judged by journalists from another state. The number of editorial cartoonists employed by newspapers has declined through the years, with most picking up syndicated cartoonists. “As far as staff cartoonists, I think there are probably just a couple dozen left around the country who are employed full time by newspapers,” Campbell said.

How businesses on Geist Reservoir are faring in 2021 Jonathan Matthes jonathan@youarecurrent.com The COVID-19 pandemic put a damper on many businesses and events, but those along the Geist Reservoir waterfront aren’t among them. “Things are busier than heck,” said Greg Binder, manager at Geist Marina. “Ever since COVID hit and people realized they could play and be safe out on the lake, they’ve been renting, renting, renting. We went from thinking maybe we won’t have much business (in 2020) to maxing out. We’ve been at full capacity since July 1 of last year and sales went through the roof and have continued.” Binder has managed Geist Marina since 2017 and saw boat sales and rentals increase each year before rising sharply in 2020. “The parking lot here looked like July Fourth every weekend last year,” Binder said of the marina’s busiest day in a normal year. “Between boat sales and slip rentals and gas sales, I think there has been a whole different level of customers that came to boating because of COVID and now will stay.” Those customers have kept coming in 2021, Binder said. “It’s the same, but now it’s a full season. Last year, we started with nothing, then it all kicked in when people realized that they could get out and be safe on a boat,” he said. “This year started busier than all can be. The only thing that has done anything to slow us down has been the weather.” Every boat in Binder’s fleet is rented out for every weekend through August. The marina has boats still available on some weekdays and nights. Anyone hoping for last-minute Fourth of July rentals will be disappointed. Binder rented those boats out in early April. Besides the weather, the biggest challenge facing the marina this year has been supply chain issues. “I’ve had a rental boat down for a week and a half waiting on a throttle cable. We just had to wait. Sometimes it takes weeks,” Binder said. “I have a ton of life jackets that haven’t shown up. They’re on

well,” manager Ryan Davis said. “During the pandemic, we went to carryout only. We were having a really hard time staffing but having our college kids back has helped us reopen.” Davis has been working with Puccini’s at different locations for about 17 years and has been at the Geist location for the last year and a half. He said he’s noticed a connection between the success of businesses in Geist and activity on the water. “People are out all the time. People on the water are doing dockside services again. People love the patio at our location, and weather is a big part of this location,” Davis said. “Nice days, we do extremely well. If it’s raining, we can be kind of slow. People just love being outside on the water.” ON THE COVER: Demand for boat rentals has risen sharply at Geist Reservoir since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. (Photo by Jonathan Matthes)

a container ship somewhere. I bought (a lot of) tubes in October (2020) that were due in March and I’m still waiting on them.”

Restaurants faring well, too Lakefront restaurants thrive off the success of the marina. More people on the water means more people looking for convenient dining options. “We have boat-side service, and even last year our boat sales were through the roof,” said Nyla Wolf, who owns Wolfies Grill with

her husband, Scott. “People will be out on the water and come to us, which is great.” Wolf expects sales at Wolfies Grill to surpass 2019’s total. The restaurant saw a 50 percent decrease in sales from 2019 to 2020. “I think this year is going to be the best year that we’ve ever had in our restaurants,” Wolf said. “I think it really has to do with people just coming out, and we’re up 30 percent in carryout, which helps us, too.” Business also is better this year at Puccini’s Pizza and Pasta. “We’re doing really

Among the biggest challenges this year at Geist Marina is finding parts and supplies, according to manager Greg Binder. “The freeze in Texas messed up all the production of the foam, so that affects furniture, RVs, boat furniture. There’s some supply chain problems with the resin pellets that people use for gelcoats on fiberglass boats,” Binder said. In the last decade, many businesses, like Geist Marina, moved away from having storehouses on-site because delivery systems had become so efficient and quick that there was little need to store an abundance. That system worked well as long as supply chains remained intact. “(In 2020 and 2021) that supply chain got all messed up,” Binder said. “That Suez Canal thing? It locked up a bunch of stuff. Container ships with parts couldn’t show up to manufacturers, so they can’t finish this boat or that RV, which causes big delays.”

Sometimes, it just seems like we cannot get out of our own way. We have good intentions, plan and work hard. We are professionally trained and of good moral character. But there is a gap. Is it simple incompetence? Are our failures the result of sufficient effort but insufficient ability? Perhaps. Maybe the fault is one of some externality. Maybe the reoccurring fact that our objectives often do not materialize as outcomes is not because of us at all. Again, perhaps. Is everything that we are doing the absolute best that it could be? Are we remaining open to better courses of action? Are there superior paths than the ones we’ve chosen? The smartest humans among us are constantly striving for self-improvement. Do we remember the destination even when we are fatigued from the journey? Do we meet people where they are without restraint? The elementary school librarian could not seem to get little Frankie to return his library books on time. He’d been warned, lectured and incentivized — all to no avail. With good intention, he still didn’t deliver. In exasperation, he was banned from the library. OK, scofflaws must be held to account. Yet is it ever right to proclaim, you are dumb and we are going to keep you that way and that knowledge is ours and we only share it with those deserving? Sit still, stand in queue, pay the fine, toe the line, or you will be held back in ignorance. Can we teach Frankie the importance of responsibility by preventing him from having responsibility? Will our good intentions get to an equally good outcome? Could Frankie pay his penance by reading books about responsibility? Could he learn if we let him? Could he think of his actions as both intention and outcome? Can we?

My ear-y tale of auditory distress continues, friends, as I have bravely fought — but not yet defeated — a weeklong battle against a giant ball of hardened wax and its ally, the mighty otitis. I’m currently regrouping during a momentary ceasefire orchestrated by those beloved diplomats, Advil and Zithromax, So here I am, still but I’ll have in agony, still in an to jump back epic fight for my into the fray soon. I can’t middle ear. actually hear – DANIELLE WILSON the enemy (or anything, for that matter), but I can feel them closing in. I thought it would be a decisive victory during my second encounter on the fields of Minute Clinic, but, alas, despite an NP firing a (water) cannon into my left ear — three times, mind you — and then repeatedly stabbing said ear with what could and should be labeled a bayonet, that treasonous wax glob didn’t budge, not one iota. In fact, I dare say it decidedly hunkered down, refusing to yield even a tiny part of its Benedict Arnold-self or the canal it guarded. A full retreat was ordered, and I fled to the safety of my minivan, finding catharsis in 107.9 FM and post-traumatic tears. So here I am, still in agony, still in an epic fight for my middle ear. The antibiotics, despite their powerful reputation, have failed thus far to provide the support they promised. Desertion is rampant sleep, appetite and balance are all AWOL — and I fear morale is dropping to unrecoverable levels. I have a few more days before the next scheduled assault and am praying that I will finally emerge victorious. Because one way or another, this needs to end. Auditory distress is hell, not to mention bloody ear-itating. Peace out.

New law aims to help mental health patients

DISPATCHES

Treatment of Hip & Knee Arthritis

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com A new state law will make it much easier for first responders to be kept informed about a patient’s PARAMEDICINE mental health safety plan, allowing for a safer transition for the patient back into the community following a crisis. Indiana House Enrolled Act 1118 allows for a representative of an integrated health care program or a representative of a mental health community paramedicine program to request a patient’s individualized mental health safety plan from a psychiatric crisis center, psychiatric inpatient unit or psychiatric residential treatment provider if certain conditions are met. Hamilton County Councilor Steve Nation, a former judge, collaborated with lawmakers to craft the new law. “As it is, those who are transported by police or paramedics to a psychiatric center are evaluated, given a mental health safety plan and sent on their way,” Nation stated. “This law allows the transporting agency to request a copy of that safety plan so it can follow up with the patient and offer them the services and support they need to get back on their feet.” State Rep. Donna Schaibley (R-Carmel) applauds the new law, calling it a “step in the right direction” to help endangered adults receive follow-up care and also connect them with services in their community to improve their quality of life. “This is a community-based solution to help our state’s most vulnerable Hoosiers through a crisis situation and beyond that immediate emergency care,” Schaibley stated. “Allowing these trained paramedics access to the individual’s safety plan will ensure the person in need will get the proper treatment and care.” Nation estimates up to 800 people in Hamilton County could benefit from the bill, which will become law on July 1. “If you’re in the middle of a mental health crisis, you’re not thinking, ‘Here’s what I need’ or ‘Here’s what’s available,’” Nation said. “(The law) is trying to help people in the midst of a mental health crisis to have adequate services and to get them there and help pass the crisis.”

Moving for better health – Sitting for most of the day is terrible for your health, raising your risk for diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. For better health, try to get up and do some light activity several times a day, even if you have a sedentary job. Moving around triggers blood flow, clears glucose from the blood and breaks down triglycerides. Source: BottomLineHealth.com Prevent bruises – To prevent a bruise after an injury, try this. Wet your fingers and then dip them in sugar. Massage the injured area with your sugary fingers. The massage will promote blood circulation in the area to help prevent bruising. Source: BottomLineHealth.com Improve your focus – Do you have more trouble concentrating than you used to? Studies show that our attention spans are declining, largely due to the use of technology. We feel we have to respond to every text, alert and call immediately. Instead, try putting the phone on “do not disturb” mode for a few minutes when you need to focus on something else. You may find it easier to concentrate and you probably won’t miss anything truly important. Source: Cynthia Green, Ph.D. Sunscreen tip – Most skin cancers are a result of exposure to UV radiation. UV radiation comes in two forms – UVA and UVB. Sunscreen products list an SPF on the label, but the SPF only refers to protection from UVB rays. Make sure to buy products that are labeled as “broad spectrum” in order to obtain protection from both types of radiation. Source: fda.gov

Daniel’s Vineyard lands Indianapolis Opera’s Lobster Palooza By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Indianapolis Opera and Daniel’s Family Vineyard & Winery seemed like a perfect match. EVENT “Wine is a very strongly associated craft with opera,” Indianapolis Opera General Director David Starkey said. “(Daniel’s Vineyard) really prescribes to an amazing craftsmanship and the desire to be dedicated to their neighbors. They’ve always explored a lot with music and cultural events. It just seemed to be the right avenue to explore.” The 11th annual Lobster Palooza will be held at Daniel’s Vineyard in McCordsville from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 8. Current Publishing is serving as a media sponsor. National Bank of Indianapolis, Ellinger Riggs Insurance and Merrill Lynch also are sponsors. “That’s a big change for us because historically, Lobster Palooza has been held at Basile Opera Center (in Indianapolis),” Starkey said. The 2020 event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Starkey said the opera company had to merge Lobster Palooza and Opera Ball into a virtual fundraiser with live singers. “We just felt it was time to think of the next generation of the event after 10 years,” Starkey said. “We thought, what is the next decade going to be like for this fundraiser? Many people equate this to being one of the most unique, fun-filled events of that size. For this kind of size, 200 to 300 people, this has been consistently revered as the event. There is a new generation of opera fans, board members and donors, and they love this event. The event has brought in more of a younger, middle-aged crowd. This is real Maine lobster, and (we) have a special boiler expert we bring in from out of town to boil the lobster. We’re not getting frozen lobsters from the grocery store. This is the real deal. A Cut Above Catering has been the caterer and the chef of choice for many years of this event.

JUNIOR CIVIC THEATRE Junior Civic Theatre’s production of “Disney’s Frozen Jr.” at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel will be presented at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. June 29-30. “So, we’re taking a very successful event and we are putting it at one of the best developing venues in our region. It’s a win-win.” The event will feature singers Daniel Narducci and Marci Jackson, who were leads in Indianapolis Opera’s 2019 production of “Camelot.” The Dean Martini Band will perform between 7 and 9 p.m. “That’s a new wrinkle. We haven’t had a band for years,” said Starkey, a McCordsville resident. “We’re going to have the opera singers sing with the band. There is a great space for people to dance.” In addition to signature drinks and wine from Daniel’s Vineyard, Tito’s, Sun King and Still Moon products will be served. A lobster event near Geist Reservoir seemed to be a logical match as well, Starkey said.

Starkey said the move also was generated by a motivation to develop new partnerships. “Through a relationship we have with Visit Indy, a board member of ours, Janet Arnold, who works for Visit Indy, brought this recommendation to us,” Starkey said. Starkey said many members already were aware of Daniel’s Vineyard. “So, the learning curve was pretty short,” Starkey said. “The conversation started in late winter. We were just thrilled with their desire to expand and connect in the arts.” The cocktail hour is at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. Tickets are $175 per person, and a table of eight is $1,400. A $100 portion of the ticket price is tax deductible. For more, indyopera.org/lobsterpalooza. html.

Internationally renowned violin virtuoso Zachary DePue was named concertmaster of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra June 23. “Carmel Symphony Orchestra is absolutely thrilled to announce that Zach is joining us and bringing his energy, his warmth, his versatility and DePue his overall musical passion to our orchestra and to our community,” CSO Artistic Director Janna Hymes stated. DePue was a CSO guest artist earlier this year, joining the orchestra for its performance of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.” DePue served as concertmaster for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for more than a decade and is well known as a founding member of the ISO’s first ensemble-in-residence, the international sensation Time for Three, with whom he performed for 15 years. He performs on a violin made in 1846 by Giuseppe Rocca of Turin, Italy.

The Garden Table

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 342 Massachusetts Ave., Indianapolis What to get: Acai bowl
 Price: $14
Anna’s take: The Garden Table is a beautiful restaurant that has two locations, Mass Ave and Broad Ripple, with a third slated to open in Carmel in the fall. I tried an array of dishes at the Mass Ave location. My favorite was the acai bowl — a vibrantly colored smoothie-like bowl topped with berries, house-made cashew granola, banana, almond butter, coconut flakes and minty herbs. A delicious combo of different tastes and textures, it’s a healthy way to eat something sweet. Another favorite was the Chilaquiles ($14), which is The Garden Table’s version of nachos with house-made corn tortilla chips, black beans, chicken tossed in salsa verde, a sunny-side up egg, avocado, queso fresco cilantro lime crema and a side of fresh pico de gallo. For vegetarian eaters,

The Garden Table has a wide variety of menu items catering toward a healthy clientele. (Photo by Anna Skinner)

the farro bowl ($12) is quite hearty with farro rice, portabello mushroom, carrots, roasted cauliflower and spinach and topped with a perfectly poached egg. Another healthy option is the Mediterranean salad ($13), a delicious spread of mixed greens, pico de gallo, couscous pearls, feta, roasted tomatoes, Kalamata olives and Greek dressing. And for the traditional breakfast fans, the blueberry hotcake stack ($8) is a tasty choice of four thick cakes that have a texture similar to combining a pancake and cornbread. Suggested pairings: The Garden Table is a juicery with fresh cold-pressed juices, so I would suggest ordering a juice with your meal. You can purchase a glass for $9, a sample for $3 or a flight of four 5 oz. pours for $11. My favorites were the Neon Nectar, made with orange, carrot, apple, lemon, turmeric and ginger, and the Hoosier Heater, a green juice of apple, orange, spinach, kale, cilantro, jalapeño and lime.

Behind bars: Mexican Peach Mule Get it at Four Day Ray, Fishers Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Olmeca Tequila, .5 oz. lime juice, .75 oz. Monin Peach syrup, 2 oz. Jumex Peach Juice, ginger beer Directions: Mix first four ingredients, pour over ice in a copper mug and top with ginger beer.

Blueprint for Improvement: Meridian-Kessler master makeover Commentary by Larry Greene This 1925 home is in the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood. The remodel from the 1980s was overdue for some functional and aesthetic updates.

After

THE BLUEPRINT • The large deck tub was replaced with a compact soaking tub; a storage niche was added to the back wall. • The knee wall separating the toilet and the tub was extended to the ceiling for privacy. • Finishes include beautiful Alder wood cabinetry and matte white tile in a classic basket-weave pattern on the floor. • Sleek modern touches round out the space, including matte black fixtures and an oversized LED mirror.
