Claire Wilmington works to create art on Urban Chalkboard’s large canvas. (Submitted photo)
Urban Chalkboard to auction art By Renee Larr • news@currentinfishers.com The Urban Chalkboard in Carmel, 452 E. Carmel Dr., will host a silent auction to benefit Geist Orchard Cooperaevent tive Preschool from 5 to 7 p.m. during its Patio Night July 20. Auctioned will be portions of a large canvas created by participants in an art class at Urban Chalkboard called Process Art. “Process Art is really just about the process and not the end product,â€? said Cheyenne Land-Requiz, a teacher at Geist Orchard Cooperative Preschool. “The kids have lots of opportunities for messy fun and letting their imagination run wild to create, using a lot of different materials and mediums.â€? Land-Requiz teaches the Process Art class at Urban Chalkboard. Each week, she brings in different items such as plungers, pendulums and old CDs for kids to use to add to the canvas. “It’s really messy, but she brings in all these incredible materials each week,â€? said
Jessica Beer, co-owner of Urban Chalkboard. “This canvas is around 4 by 10 feet. We lay it on the floor, and the kids just gather around the canvas to explore all the materials and the canvas. It’s really cool to see how it’s changed each week. The canvas will be divided into pieces that families can purchase at Patio Night. Pizza, beer and wine will be served for parents. “We try to tailor Patio Night to the parents as much as we do the kids, Beer said. “This particular evening is going to be dedicated to the Geist Orchard Cooperative Preschool silent auction. We’re hoping the community will come in to support them because they’re a nonprofit. It’s all about getting them funded. Urban Chalkboard will offer all its normal play activities for children during Patio Night. The cost is $5 per child with pre-registration and $8 per child at the door. Adults and children 9 months and under are free. To register, visit theurbanchalkboard.com.

Ten Pin Alli
Nickel Plate Players to premiere next show July 21 By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com
Later this month, the Fishers-based nonprofit theater troupe, Nickel Plate Players, cover story will premiere its next show, “Ten Pin Alli,” in the Geist area. With 13 cast members, the production will run for six shows at Theater at the Fort, 8920 Otis Ave., Lawrence, July 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30. The play – written by its director, Ashton Wolf, a Fishers resident, and his musical colleague, Daina DePrez – was inspired by an original song by DePrez. “She played a song called ‘The Bowling Song,’ and for some reason, to this day we don’t know why, we decided we were going to write a musical about bowling,” Wolf said. “That song was the impetus for us to then write it, but it’s about a lot more than just bowling. The story, characters and storyline started to develop when she went back to Minneapolis and I went back to Cincinnati. We wrote it almost exclusively over the internet.” With a bowling tournament on the horizon, the production follows an all-male team looking to earn its trophy back.
“The very first song is called ‘Big Bad Motorcycle Man,’ and you find out in that song that the best bowler in town, a guy by the name of Bernie (portrayed by Steve Jerk), has been killed in a crash,” Wolf said. “The second-best bowler in town is his girlfriend, and her name is Alli (portrayed by Afton Shepard), who is such a good bowler they call her Ten Pin Alli. The ghost of Bernie then reappears and convinces Alli to disguise herself as a man to bowl on the men’s team, so she does.” Throughout the two-act musical, the character of Alli struggles with hearing and seeing the ghost of Bernie, unsure if it’s real or if she’s going crazy. “At the end of Act One, she sings a song called ‘I’d Rather Be A Girl,’ because she’s contemplating disguising herself as a man,” Wolf said. “But then at the beginning of Act Two, she finally disguises herself and sings a song called ‘The Man in Me.’” “Ten Pin Alli” is Nickel Plate Players’ first production of the season. The next show, “My Inlaws Are Outlaws,” will premiere on the heels of “Ten Pin Alli” in September, and the troupe also will put on “Coming Home,” a Christmas cabaret, in December. Phase 1 parenting success
o b s e r v a tion Reaching terminal stressocity
Commentary by Danielle Wilson
Commentary by Terry Anker The law of terminal velocity holds that if an object is falling from a great height, it will gain speed only until it reaches the attraction limit of the gravity pulling it earthward. In other words, the planet is drawing the thing to it (defining its weight). Without gravity, the object would not fall at all – and would have no “weight” in the way we might imagine. Please forgive the physics lesson, but the notion that all things will come to their natural limit is an intriguing one. Although we may find our constraints at different paces, each, in due time, will max out! At a wedding recently, the otherwise lovely outdoor affair was witness to an approaching, and ominous, rainstorm. Even as the staff scurried to move the band and other gear inside before the squall, one imagined what would be the harm if we all got a little wet? In the first moments, we might scramble to protect delicate garments or arrangements of hair. But as the drops came, we’d soon be wet. So wet that we couldn’t get any wetter. We would achieve the terminal velocity of wetness. Could we apply the same concept to others of our fears? Is there a maximum amount of stress someone can take before reaching terminal stressocity – the point where no more can be managed or absorbed? And, if so, should we all relax just a bit knowing that a breaker switch is standing guard? Just as a cup can only hold so much liquid, should we think more about its contents and have less concern for the overflow? Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. You may email him at terry@youarecurrent.com.

Sankofa: taking from the past Commentary by Rev. Michael Vandeberg Sankofa is a West African word that means taking from the religion past what you need to succeed in the future. It is symbolized by a bird whose feet face forward and whose head looks back over its shoulder to retrieve an egg from its back. This is a wonderful view of how to use the past to benefit the present and the future. Instead of ignoring the past or trying to change it to fit our current circumstances, it looks truthfully at the past and reclaims those things that made the past great, exemplify our life principles, and will assist us in moving forward with a positive certainty. When Moses had finally lead the Hebrew people out of Egypt, received the law of God at Mt. Sinai, and stood on the edge of the “Promised Land,” the time came for him to pass on the leadership of his people to Joshua. Joshua was the young, upcoming, disciplined leader that was firmly rooted in God’s word, whose moral compass was established in faith and who could move the people solidly into the future.
As Moses looked out over the millions of people he pronounced his final blessing over each of the twelve tribe and then over the people as a whole. His words were drawn from their past successes and failures and then projected out a clear path for them into the future. He was practicing Sankofa. In Deuteronomy 34, it writes, “Now Joshua, son of Nun, was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the lord had commanded Moses.” The wisdom, knowledge and direction all informed the new leadership, and they moved into the future with confidence. Perhaps it is time that we as a people choose not to ignore the past but to let it inform our march to the future as those who have come before us did. Rev. Michael VandenBerg is the pastor of Hope Community Church, a congregation of the Christian Reformed Church, and a community consultant for City in the Church Consulting. He and his wife Nancy have been Indiana residents for over 17 years and Indianapolis residents since 2008. He can be contacted at office@indyhopecrc.org.
It occurred to me that Doo and I are in the midst of a monumental year of parenting. Our youngest turned humor 13 in the spring, leaving us with only teenagers as roommates. Then the twins celebrated their 16th birthdays yesterday, after having recently obtained driving permits. And barring incarceration, we’ll be dumping our oldest curbside at his yet unnamed IU dormitory in just six short weeks. Go us! Not surprisingly, I’m frequently asked, “How do you feel about (insert milestone)?” The answer is always a resounding, “Faneffing-tastic!” I’m not kidding. True, when I reflect on my role as a mother in the context of preparing my precious little angels to go out into the world as responsible, kind, civic-orientated adults, I’m almost always second-guessing myself. Do they really understand the importance of recycling? Should I have listened more to their problems and fixed less? Why does the Chore Chart never seem to work? But when I stand back and look at the young men and women they’re becoming, I can easily give myself and Doo pats on the back. First, they all survived. That may not sound like a big deal, but back in 2004, when I had three in diapers and a fourth who liked to take his pants off at the public library while screaming, “Mommy, wipe my bottom,” my mantra was simply “Keep them alive until dinner.” Second, all are on track to eventually find jobs and move out. I’m 95 percent confident that none of my children will end up as basement-dwelling moochers in their 30s. So congratulations to Doo and me. First phase of parenting almost complete! Peace out. Death by vending machine Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I just returned from my brother’s wedding in New York City, and I am happy to report that things went off humor without a hitch ... except for Peter. He got hitched for the first time, which was about the last thing I expected him to do at age 66. My family was strolling along Sixth Avenue on Thursday, and I stopped at the spot where once sat a Horn and Hardart Automat, the world’s biggest “vending machine.” Inside the restaurant was a giant wall covered with hundreds of small compartments, each with shiny glass doors. Customers would put in coins, slide the door open and grab a serving of creamed spinach, Salisbury steak, meatloaf or homemade apple pie. At one time, the slots only took nickels. I’m not old enough to remember back that far. Behind those little doors was a mammoth kitchen where men and women in starched white uniforms slid cherry cobbler into the oven and basted the huge turkeys to be roasted. If your favorite vegetable was not in its slot, you simply vocalized, “GOT ANY CREAMED SPINACH?” Before
you knew it, a hand appeared and placed the succulent side dish within your grasp. In 2016, 14 people were killed by vending machines. I assumed it was from bad chicken salad, but apparently it was the machine falling on folks who had lost their temper and began shaking the behemoth. Last week, I put a buck in a dispenser for a cup of coffee. I pressed extra cream and extra sugar. The piping hot beverage came bubbling out exactly as I had programmed it. The aroma of freshly brewed java wafted into my nose, but the precious liquid swirled down the drain hole. There was no cup. Ain’t technology great? Now, machines even drink your coffee for you. Horn and Hardart closed in 1991, selling many of their locations to Burger King. Occasionally, for old time’s sake, when I place my drive-thru order, I scream, “GOT ANY CREAMED SPINACH?”

Program gets funding renewed By Jessica Hoover news@currentinfishers.com
In Hamilton County only about 12 percent of adults smoke, prevention but that does not stop Holly Wheeler, program coordinator of Smoke-free Hamilton County, from wanting to make those numbers even lower. To help with the mission to prevent and decrease tobacco use, the Indiana Wheeler Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commission has renewed grant funding for SFHC. According to Wheeler, there are specific priorities that SFHC has to meet in order to keep receiving funding. They must aim to prevent smoking, decrease exposure to secondhand smoke, help people quit and build a partnership within the community. To help meet some of these priorities, SFHC plans on focusing on changing policies and systems, such as switching to smoke-free campuses, and working with health providers to encourage people to quit smoking. Youth programs also will be a large contributor in SFHC’s efforts to prevent smoking.
“Almost 25 percent of our (Hamilton County’s) population is under the age of 17,” Wheeler said. “Our biggest goal is working toward youth programs so that we can keep this from happening. The best way to control tobacco use is prevention. (We want) to really work with schools and with youth organizations to engage youth advocates through peer advocacy programs. So, other youth are communicating to their peers about nicotine and tobacco use.” Wheeler said that because of Hamilton County’s low use of tobacco, she is worried that the citizens may be less likely to have conversations about the significance of prevention and quitting. “My hope with this grant is that we are able to restart a conversation about tobacco control and the importance it has on the health of people here in Hamilton County,” Wheeler said. “If we lead the way in terms of youth prevention, education and working with providers toward cessation, hopefully other communities will follow suit. We can help impact not just the health of our communities, but also communities all over Indiana.” For more on tobacco prevention, quitting, secondhand smoke and more, visit hamiltoncountyphhc.com/ tobacco-prevention-cessation.

Amy’s top picks for the 2017 Indy Film Fest Commentary by Amy Pauszek It’s that time of year again to grab your favorite film-buff pal and get to the annual Indy Film Fest. It’s one of my favorites because it has something for everyone and it’s one of the hottest festivals in town. The festival runs July 13 film through July 22 at the Indianapolis
Museum of Art. The Indianapolis 48 Hour Contest also will be featured at the festival. This is where local Indy filmmakers have 48 hours to write, cast and produce a short film. I have been a judge for five years and last year participated in a film just for fun. It’s a whirlwind of excitement but hard work. For tickets, visit indyfilmfest.org.
“WIND RIVER” Opening night, showing at 7 p.m. July 13 An FBI agent teams up with a town’s veteran game-tracker to investigate a murder that occurred on a Native American reservation.
“CHATTER BOX” A short film, showing at 7:30 p.m. July 16 and 3:30 p.m. July 22 The Chatter Box has been an Indianapolis bar since the 1930s but hasn’t always been the establishment that it is today. Current owner David Andrichik welcomes everyone to the historic bar where local jazz musicians can share their art every night of the week.
“DEAD DRAW” Feature film, showing at 9 p.m. July 17 and 8:15 p.m., July 21 Someone knows about the $25 million and the plane to Mexico. Someone killed the gateway pilot. As loyalty turns to suspicion and friends become enemies, four criminals try to find the rat and escape their past - if they can survive the night.
“THE THINGS WE’VE SEEN” A feature film, showing at 9:15 p.m. July 19 and 3:15 p.m. July 22 A boy searches for his fugitive father in a town struggling to survive.
Arts Crawl returns, invests $2,000 more into artists By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com
List of artists
The Fishers Arts Crawl will return for its third summer. This year it is investing approximately $2,000 more into its artists. The investment will add a dance event troupe, Kenyetta Dance Company, for performances of “The Skin We’re In.” New additions also include Storytelling Arts of Indiana and the Bongo Boy Drum Circle. “We’ve done some similar events this summer with Happy Hour in the District. We are trying to do amended versions because the Arts Crawl is so big, and we want to make sure to give artists attention and support in a bigger fashion,” said Casey Cawthon, City of Fishers assistant director of public relations. “This year in particular the city invested a little bit more from a dollar standpoint into the event, because we are really looking to maintain vibrancy for artists coming into the Nickel Plate District.” The Arts Crawl will be from 6 to 9 p.m. July 15 in the Nickel Plate District. Participating artists come in all forms, including woodworking, sculpting, live music, breakdancing, musicians and more. After the Arts Crawl, Jennie DeVoe will perform during the AMP After Dark Concert Series from 9 to 11 p.m. at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, 6 Municipal Dr.
• William Denton Ray and Jeff Day Music will perform at The Switch. This also is the hub for Fishers Arts Council, which will be selling Sun King beer. • Meyer Najem will feature an exhibit by philanthropist and painter Marianne Glick. • The 20-instrument drum circles will perform at The Pocket Park throughout the event. • Citizen’s State Bank is paired with Becky Heimann who creates wood block prints. • Lily & Sparrow will feature Patty Klunzinger, a glassblowing artist. • Brett Wiscons will “pedal and play” acoustic guitar on the Pint Cycle. • For a full list of artists and their locations throughout the Nickel Plate District, visit fishers.in.us/ artscrawl.

“The Arts Crawl is really neat. It gives people a chance to explore the community but in a way that feels really organic,” Cawthon said. “The Arts Crawl is a really cool opportunity to check out local businesses, see what goods and services they offer, but also connect (people) with the art community.” Cawthon encourages those interested to like the Arts Crawl event page on Facebook, as it posts updates and responds to people periodically. For more, visit fishers.in.us/artscrawl. An Arts Crawl map will be available on the website and the Nickel Plate District mobile app before the event.

Vishran Ghat, along India’s Yamuna River. (Photo by Don Knebel)
Yamuna: India’s sacred river Commentary by Don Knebel The Yamuna River is second only to the Ganges in spiritual importance to Indians. Mathura, located on its banks about 90 miles southeast of Delhi, is travel one of India’s holiest cities. The Yamuna River has its source in the Lower Himalayas and passes through Delhi and Agra, the home of the Taj Majal, before finally joining the sacred Ganges. For Hindus, the Yamuna River is the goddess Yamuna, the daughter of the sun god and the brother of Yama, the god of death. For thousands of years, Hindus have believed that bathing in the Yamuna River can save them from dying in agony. The Yamuna River has also long been associated with Krishna, the beloved god of love and compassion made popular in the West through the Hare Krishna movement of the late 20th century. Hindus believe Krishna was the eighth avatar or manifestation of Vishnu, one of Hinduism’s three most important gods. Krishna was born in Mathura, an ancient city along the Yamuna River. Krishna grew
up in nearby Vrindavan and is famous for his heroic exploits along the river. In one story, he drove away a multi-hooded snake that had poisoned the river and turned it black. Another time Krishna returned to Mathura, which his uncle Kansa had made the capital of an evil kingdom. After killing Kansa and freeing the people, Krishna rested alongside the Yamuna River before returning to Vrindavan. Today, Mathura, with a population of about 600,000, is the home of a major temple honoring the birth of Krishna. It also is the home of 25 ghats, temples for worshipping Krishna and stepping down into the Yamuna River. Vishran Ghat, the most important, remembers where Krishna rested after killing Kansa and is the start and finish of a circumambulation of Mathura’s most holy places. Don Knebel is a local resident who works for Barnes & Thornburg LLP. For the full column visit donknebel.com. You may contact him at news@currentzionsville.com.
