Fuzic announces move to Braden, 255 new jobs By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Fuzic announced Oct. 2 it would move into the new Braden Business Systems building, 7 Municipal Dr., and bring 255 jobs growth to Fishers by 2020. Executives from the marketing tech platform were joined by Gov. Eric Holcomb and Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness. Fuzic provides custom audio advertisements and music for businesses. It began in Launch Fishers and currently has 30 employees. “The Indy region, including Fishers, is building a technological community and rapidly emerging as one of the leading technological hubs,” said Scott McCorkle, Fuzic executive chairman. “We have the fastest technology job growth in the Midwest and second-fastest in the country.” Fuzic was granted approximately $3.3 million in tax credits from the Indiana Economic Development Corp. as well as an additional $145,000 in training grants. CEO Brent Oakley said the City of Fishers was considering more incentives for the company’s expansion. Fuzic will expand into Braden’s second floor. “As a company that’s got global customers located all around the world, they could’ve chosen anywhere to grow and they chose Fishers,” Holcomb said. “We will remain eternally grateful that you chose to grow your workforce and products on Hoosier soil. Because of mentorship and the Indiana technological community and leadership, we have come a long way fast. We are no longer in the wilderness. We are truly

a leader, nationally speaking, and we are witnessing that here right now.” Fadness shared a story of when he met Oakley, who also owns Prime Carwash. According to Fadness, Oakley formed the idea of Fuzic while listening to a competitors' advertisements in his own car wash, which

led to the creation of Fuzic. “Today is another step forward in creating a smart, vibrant and entrepreneurial city,” Fadness said. “Anytime you can win a company, it’s extraordinary, but when you see one grow, it’s a point of pride.” For more, visit fuzicmedia.com.

Archers owners to retire, close Fishers spot By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Since 1968, Archers Meats and Catering has served Fishers at the same downtown location at 8655 E 116th St. On Sept. 2, the Fishers location closed its doors for good. “The main reason we closed is because of my husband’s health,” Michele Archer said. “He is 76 years old, and it’s time to close. It’s time for him to retire. He’s been working 51 years.” “I’m getting tired of the work,” Ron Archer said. “Everything comes to an end. It was a wonderful ride.” Ron lived near a meat processing plant as a child and began working at the plant in 1957, when he was 16. Archers Meats and Catering was originally opened in Zionsville before moving to Fishers in 1968. There also is a Greenwood store, which will remain open. It is run by the Archers’ son, Christopher. The Archers’ other son, Kenneth, also works at the Greenwood location. Throughout its tenure, Archer’s was a slaughter and processing plant. Farmers would bring beef to have it slaughtered and processed in downtown Fishers. Michele said the relationship with Archer’s and

did not help us so much in this project,” she said. “Having a meat processing plant is very difficult in a town, and not once did the city ever give us any problems with having a processing plant in downtown Fishers. The city has been wonderful throughout the years, letting this processing plant be in the middle of Fishers. When it was time to leave, they were very supportive.” Archer’s was Fishers' oldest downtown business. The Archers also own the Riviera Maya building next door. Both buildings were sold to developer Corby Thompson. According to Michele, the block will be turned into a retail development. She said Riviera Maya will return after the development is complete, but Archer’s will not. As far as retirement goes, Michele said she wants to do lots of volunteer work. She said she Ron will likely pursue golf and fishing. The couple will continue living in Fishers. “It’s important for people to realize it’s time for a new generation. We’ve done our thing,” Michele said. “The baby boomers have done our thing. It’s time for the new generation. We want to make room for the new generation, and we are very supportive for new growth in downtown Fishers.” To continue receiving quality meat and service, Michele urges all Archers customers to go to the Greenwood location, 259 S Meridian St., for their meat. “Go to Greenwood,” she said. “If you want to slaughter beef or cattle or goats or lambs, go to Greenwood. That’s where we will be.”

Fiesta Latina de Lawrence Arts for Lawrence to celebrate Hispanic heritage this month

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com For the second straight year, Arts for Lawrence, the primary arts organization in cover story Lawrence Township, which also operates Theater at the Fort, is hosting Fiesta Latina de Lawrence, a celebration of Hispanic and Latino culture. Then on Oct. 28, the nonprofit will celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Mexican holiday honoring those who have died. The two events commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, which began Sept. 15 and concludes Oct. 15. “That’s why the timing for this event is in October,” said Judy Byron, executive director at Arts for Lawrence. “Also because we have such a large Latino population in Lawrence, we wanted to celebrate that culture.” Approximately 12 percent of the city is made up of a Hispanic or Latino demographic. FIESTA LATINA DE LAWRENCE Fiesta Latina de Lawrence will be 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 15 on the grounds of Theater at the Fort, 8920 Otis Ave., in Lawrence. The free event will feature arts and crafts programming, live music, food and more. The flagship partner for the event with Arts for Lawrence is Ballet Folklorico Mosaicos, a music and dance group of 50 adults and children, formed three years ago to honor Hispanic and Anglo-Saxon people in Indiana. In addition, two teachers -- Luis Oliva and Ita Garcia. -- from Forest Glen, Lawrence Township’s Spanish immersion school, will help. Oliva is Forest Glen’s drama instructor. Garcia is the school’s art teacher. “Luis works with the children at Forest Glen and others,” Byron said. “He also runs our circus club here, and his kids have been taught to walk on stilts along with so many other things. They bring in large puppets

that take like eight kids to operate. They also do living statues, so there are kids dressed in plaster and makeup, and they’re the living sculptures. Ita is a visual artist, and she will be overseeing a Frida Kahlo painting program. So anyone who comes will get to do a painting of Frida, probably on a pretty large scale.” Fiesta Latina de Lawrence also will host Lawrence Central students protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), often referred to as “Dreamers.” “It’s part of our mission to be inclusive of everyone in our community and this is a large part of our community, and with everything that has happened with DACA, we just wanted to share our celebration of these fine young people,” Byron said of the students who will volunteer at the event to help with craft stations and the quinceañera fashion show. The quinceañera fashion show is open to all teenage girls who have a quinceañera dress to wear. Other activities include a DJ on the organization’s show wagon, craft stations, face painting, el toro (mechanical bull), performances by Ballet Folklorico Mosaicos, Mexican-owned food trucks and more. “We’ll have several stations set up with crafts to do,” said Lecia Floyd, marketing and program director at Arts for Lawrence. “One of them that we’re hoping to do is to make altars for Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). We’ll also be making sugar skulls. There will be crafts people can take with them and others that will stay here on display.” Dia de los Murertos Arts for Lawrnence’s Dia de Los Muertos celebration will be 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 28. Like Fiesta Latina de Lawrence, Ballet Folklorico Mosaicos will anchor the event with dance performances in Theater at the Fort. “They’ll perform several different dance styles, and we’ll have the altars (from Fiesta Latina de Lawrence) placed around the theater,” Floyd said.

ABOUT BALLET FOLKLORICO MOSAICOS Ballet Folklorico Mosaicos was founded in March 2014 by Jesús Hernández and Carol Hernández. It became a nonprofit the following month. The music and dance group began with three couples and quickly grew, attracting Hispanic and Anglo-Saxon people in Indiana and the Midwest. To date, the group has approximately 50 members. “Our goal is to provide an overview of the musical, dance and Mexican customs through spectacular mosaics of choreography and costumes,” Jesús and Carol Hernández said. “Through this display of color and movement, there is a piece of work that guarantees the projection of the traditions of each town.” Local students in Ballet Folklorico Mosaicos receive free training and perform throughout the Midwest. o b s e r v a tion Pass the broccoli

Commentary by Danielle Wilson

Commentary by Terry Anker Brush your teeth. Eat your vegetables. Go to bed. Each of these may remind us of childhood. If we are lucky, we had an adult in our lives who cared enough to prompt, scold and cajole us into forming habits that would be good for us – eventually. Yet, why did they seem to care so much if we skipped a plate of greens? Sometimes, it seemed they just liked to argue! Then, as life has a way of doing, our perspectives change. We move from the role of child to adult and begin to care more about the health and well-being of those around us. Broccoli is part of a balanced diet. It is filled with fiber, vitamin C and calcium. Perhaps when our parents forced us to eat it, they were showing as much love as antagonism. Sure, a tired, sugar-buzzed child with a toothache is no joy to be around. So, self-interest may have served a modicum of motivation to our adults. But most of the benefits of good habits don’t come until much later. As years passed, our own children have formed the necessary practices to live right; and, we don’t spend as much time directing them. Today’s admonishments are more likely to be shine your shoes or payoff your monthly credit card balance. Is our work done? This week, a dental hygienist reminded me to floss more often; an internist urged that I eat less salt; and a trainer told me to work on my flexibility – every day! Have we become children again, needy of reminders and encouragement? Or, have we benefitted from the support all along – our busy lives and constant distractions simply keeping us from taking note? Who knows, but I think I’ll order broccoli for lunch.

Kenley: A final farewell Commentary by State Sen. Luke Kenley (R-Noblesville) As my time as a state lawmaker winds down, I want to take a opinion moment to reflect on my time serving in the Indiana Legislature – how I started, what I accomplished and who helped me along the way. Prior to running for a state senate seat, I grew a small family business and served as a Noblesville City Court judge. While I never considered myself a “political guy,” at the recommendation of some in the community, I ran for the Senate in the early 1990s with the intent to help Hoosiers and move the state of Indiana forward. As a new legislator, I started by addressing small issues within our state, but as my role grew in the Senate, so did my goals. Since 2009, I’ve chaired the Senate Committee on Appropriations, a role that is central to the creation of the state budget. Education was always a top budget priority for me. I worked to ensure the citizens of our state had the opportunity to receive a quality education by providing ample funding for K-12 and higher

education over the last 10 years and sponsoring legislation to create the College Choice 529 Direct Savings Plan, which gives parents a chance to receive up to a $1,000 credit on state taxes. I’d like to reflect on my fond memories interacting with young people and our future leaders at the Statehouse. A longstanding tradition in the General Assembly is our page program, which allows young Hoosiers to visit the General Assembly during session and see firsthand how policy is made. In the last 10 years, I have had a particularly high page participation rate. In meeting with so many young people, I have seen the energy and optimism they have to make Indiana an even better place. Now and in the future, Hoosiers are in great hands. I am proud to have been a state legislator. I am proud to be a Hoosier. For the full column, visit currentinwestfield.com.

Luke Kenley served as the District 20 State Senator since 1992. He announced his retirement in July and will be replaced by Victoria Spartz.

Hear ye, hear ye, people of Indianapolis Suburbia: I’ve been living a lie! For years I’ve been telling myself — and humor everyone else — that I am a great listener. That I can empathize with the best of the rest. That I’m the gal you want in the moment of emotional upheaval and/or breakdown. Wrong! According to a highly accurate online quiz, not only do I rank in the lower third, but more than half the time, I break all the rules of good listening. In other words, I’m on par with my husband, Doo, who suffers from ADD and is hearing-impaired in one ear. What I’m actually good at is tolerating the inane babble of strangers, particularly those I encounter in the Meijer check-out line, and showing just enough polite interest to get them talking about their impending plastic surgery or grandson’s wife No. 3. Even I won’t deny that I have a certain je ne sais quoi for making mere acquaintances feel comfortable enough to divulge the dark and highly amusing secrets of their lives. But this people-whispering ability is not good listening, and when it comes to friends and family, even it disappears. To wit, I frequently interrupt my colleagues when they are sharing an idea. I almost always try to one-up Doo after he tells me about his cruddy day at work. And I usually begin planning my next trip abroad or check how many likes my latest Facebook photo has received as soon as my mom launches into a retelling of her latest retirement adventure. No empathy, no true listening. I hear you, online quiz! And I vow to do better. Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a contributing columnist. You may email her at danielle@ currentincarmel.com.

Editor, Here are some tips on how to talk openly about the hate and violence girls are witnessing around the world and at home. Admit what she saw was real: Most kids are smarter than we realize. They see through our well-meaning fibs. Children need to be able to trust their parents and caregivers. Let her lead the conversation: Ask your daughter how she is feeling about recent events. Let her know violence is not the answer, and stereotyping any group of people based on isolated actions is hurtful and wrong. Check in with your girl at regular intervals to see how she’s feeling. Provide stability: A solid routine can help kids of any age feel safe. Keep bedtimes and mealtimes as regular as possible. If you change plans, take the time to explain what’s happening. Don’t be alarmed by regression: A child who isn’t usually afraid of the dark might want to keep the lights on. A child who hasn’t wet the bed might have an accident. (As it might have been written by Mary Ellen.) Dick has been home this humor past week on the living room couch, recuperating from knee replacement surgery. Service Plus moves, expands By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Service Plus is expanding, and that has necessitated a move. Owner Chris Cunningham growth said Service Plus is leaving its 3,000-square-foot building in Fishers after 14 years to a 7,000-square-foot facility at 7520 E. 88th Place, Indianapolis. Cunningham said the company purchased the building and is spending $300,000 to renovate the space. “We’re planning to be operational at the new spot by (this month),” said Cunningham, a Geist area resident. “We’re building a training center inside our new space. We have a really hard time filling our position with our skill set. We’re looking for a plumbing and heating and air conditioning specialist, so we’re going to build a training center where we can rapidly transform

from apprentices to specialists.” Cunningham said he wanted to stay in Fishers but couldn’t find an affordable site that met the company’s needs. The training center is needed badly. “I put ads online all the time for skilled, traded plumbers and HC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and get I little applications,” Cunningham said. “But when I put an ad for earn-while-you-learn, I get 30 to 40 applications before the end of the day. We want to fill that gap and keep the quality of individual out in the field that has that skill set. You don’t want a guy hooking up a toilet wrong in your house. That flooding can be damaging.” Service Plus has 30 employees. Cunningham wants to grow to 60 by 2020. Cunningham and his wife, Emily, started the business and went full-time in 2003. Help your baby sleep safely Commentary by Diana Garino Nationally, approximately 3,500 infants die unexpectedly each year, often during sleep. Indiana has the parenting 10th-highest infant mortality rate in the U.S. October is Safe Sleep Awareness Month, and every parent wants to ensure the safety of his or her baby. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the sudden, unexpected death of an infant, and it’s one of the top three causes of infant death in Indiana and the U.S. SIDS most commonly occurs within a period of sleep. How a baby sleeps has an affect on his or her risk of a sleep-related death. Practicing safe sleep techniques can help parents understand and remember the most important things to do to ensure their baby’s safety. IU Health encourages parents to follow the ABCs of safe sleep: All by myself, on my Back, in my Crib. • All by myself – The safest way for babies to sleep is by themselves. This

helps prevent smothering. To keep your baby close, put his crib or bassinet next to your bed. • On my Back – Babies are less likely to choke when lying on their back. There is less of a risk of “spit up” getting in their wind pipe. Put your baby on his tummy often to prevent a flat spot on the back of his head. When practicing “tummy time,” make sure he is wide awake. • In my Crib – Sleeping flat in cribs, bassinets or playpens is safest. This keeps your baby from “slumping” and blocking his airway. Keep the crib empty so your baby does not suffocate. By teaching families how to practice safe sleep habits, we can increase positive outcomes for Hoosier babies. Diana Garino is a childbirth education coordinator at IU Health North Hospital. For more information about safe sleep techniques, or about childbirth education programs offered at IU Health North Hospital, call 317-688-2465.

Hypoglycemia and diabetes – Everyone knows about high blood sugar and the devastating effects it can have on one’s health. But low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can be just as dangerous. Hypoglycemia can be a precursor to diabetes that is often downplayed by doctors and/or missed by tests. Having low blood sugar might even make you think that you are far from having diabetes when, in fact, the opposite is true. If you think you might have hypoglycemia, call your doctor. ‘Homecoming’ boasts strong area ties

Beef & Boards presents ‘Pinocchio’

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com

editorial@youarecurrent.com

This “Homecoming” is a real family affair. Mark A. Nash directed it and his wife Shani Salyers Stiles and stepsons Owen, 12, and Max Stiles, 11, all had acting roles. Nash, a Carmel resident and a member of the Screen Actors Guild, also has a small role in a flashback scene in the movie. The 20-minute film, which won dramatic film short at the Alhambra Film Festival in Evansville, is being considered for the Heartland Film Festival’s Indiana Spotlight Award. The Heartland Film Festival is Oct. 12 through Nash 22 at Indianapolis venues. Bruce Northern, a Geist resident, wrote the movie and is one of the four producers, along with Amy Pauszek, Geist, Dan Cavallini, Noblesville and Steven Durgarn, Shelbyville. Pauszek’s Where’s Amy column is featured in Current. “Homecoming” will be screened at 2:45 p.m. Oct. 13 and 12:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at AMC Castleton Square 14. It will be shown at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at AMC Showplace Traders Point 12. “It was fun to actually have my family involved in the movie. That was pretty cool,” said Nash, a finance manager at a motorcycle dealership who has been in the film industry for 20 years. Owen is in the seventh grade and Max is in sixth grade at Creekside Middle School. “Both have been curious about acting for some time but this is the first movie they have been in,” Nash said. The movie, which won the best dramatic short, is about a successful country music star who left his hometown to find success. His ex-fiancee dies in the movie and he comes back to pay his respects at the funeral. “He chased a dream and got tied up in the music industry with groupies,” Nash said. “He broke his ex-fiancee’s heart. He comes back with a heavy heart.” Stiles plays the ex-fiancee in a flashback role and Owen plays her son. Max plays the country star as a child in another flashback

The Beef & Boards Pyramid Players will present “Pinocchio,” the classic tale of the wooden puppet who yearns to be a real boy. “Pinocchio” will be the final production of the year of the Live Theatre for Kids series at Beef & Boards. The performances are set from Oct. 13 to Nov. 11. The Pyramid Players production are an hour long and presented without intermission. The shows are designed for all ages but especially designed for children in preschool through kindergarten. The performances are set for 10 a.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturdays. Following the show, children will have the opportunity to get pictures and autographs from the cast. For reservations, call the box office at 317-872-9664. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays. For more, visit beefandboards.com.

scene. Matt Chistman, a former Indianapolis resident who lives in Los Angeles, plays the country star. “My goal is to get more SAG projects in Indiana,” Nash said. Salyers Stiles, an Indiana University graduate from Greenwood, started acting when she was 11. She was cast in “Pushed Too Far” with Claude Akins in 1988. “(For) about five years I did film and television and found a network of people,” she said. “Mark and I met on a set, actually. I got my SAG eligible a couple of years ago. For me to join, I knew the work will take me out of state more often than I can commit to with my young children. But they’re getting older, so that might change, especially if I can get a project up for what I want to do.” Salyers Stiles, who works as a business process analyst and web editor for Indiana University, said she likes that “Homecoming” is a redemptive story. “At first you don’t like this (country star) much, but as the movie goes on you realize there was this friendship between my character and his,” Salyers Stiles said. “They loved each other but he chose to leave everyone behind. It’s a really endearing story. Bruce wrote a wonderful story.” Owen has performed in a couple of commercials. “He will probably pursue acting between the two of them,” Salyers Stiles said. “He’s a natural for it.”

Blueprint for Improvement: Pool house with year-round use Commentary by Larry Greene

After solutions:

Before

Background Info: This beautiful home, in the Woods at Lions Creek neighborhood in Carmel, was built in 2011. The home is perfect for the owners and their family, but the family needed shade and space to entertain by the pool.

The owner’s goal was to add a new pool house structure for year-round entertainment. Creating a pool house with kitchenette and a full bathroom allows them to spend time with their family and entertain guests. 1. The pool house is equipped with a full kitchen, half bathroom, shower room and laundry room. 2. Incorporating a grill and bar seating in the patio of the pool house allowed for the owners to entertain guests outdoors. 3. The addition of a stone fire pit was a perfect way for the owners to create a space where family and friends could gather during the evening. 4. Additional changes included outdoor fans, grill island, and functional storage solutions. 5. For additional details, please visit our blog!

After

Before problems:

Larry Greene is the owner of Case Design/Remodeling. You may email him at lgreene@ caseindy.com. To see more before-and-after pictures of this project, visit caseindy.com/blog.

The backyard had plenty of space but was a blank slate. The home had a small deck that lacked space for the family to entertain. There was no shade and no place to grill out and store pool accessories.

Lincoln statue in London Commentary by Don Knebel London’s Parliament Square lies west of the Palace of travel Westminster, the seat of Parliament, and north of Westminster Abbey. As a result, many visitors to London walk through the square, where they encounter a magnificent statue of Abraham Lincoln in front of the Supreme Court Building. Guides never tell the complete story of the statue’s history. The 12-foot high statue depicts Lincoln rising from a chair, apparently about to begin a speech. It is a replica of a statue in Chicago’s Lincoln Park created by American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who had seen Lincoln both alive and lying in state. More important, he had access to a life mask and casts of Lincoln’s hands made in 1860. As a result, his statue is remarkably lifelike. When the statue, called “The Man” or “The Standing Lincoln,” was unveiled in 1887 before a crowd that included 14-yearold Abraham Lincoln II, Lincoln’s only grandson, the Saturday Evening Post called it “the most important achievement American sculpture has yet produced.” In May 1914, committees from England and the United States had agreed to place a

replica of “The Man” in Parliament Square to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. Another war intervened and the project was shelved until 1917, when a new plan contemplated substituting a replica of another standing Lincoln statue, this one by George Gray Barnard, for the Saint-Gaudens version. When Lincoln’s son Robert learned of the proposed switch, he was appalled. The Barnard sculpture, the original of which was in Cincinnati, had already been ridiculed as the “stomach ache statue” be-

cause of the curious placement of Lincoln’s hands. The committee went back to the original plan and the Saint-Gaudens replica was dedicated in July 1920. The stomach ache statue was diverted to Manchester.

Dispatches Aspirin for dandruff – If you’re battling dandruff, try aspirin. Salicylic acid, contained in aspirin, is used in medicated dandruff shampoos. Crush two uncoated aspirin tablets and mix them with a tablespoon of your regular shampoo for a dandruff busting wash. Source: MSN.com HVAC noises – Hearing odd sounds from your HVAC system? Here is what to watch out for. Any high-pitched squealing or grinding sounds can indicate that moving parts are not operating properly. Frequent clicking sounds may mean an electrical relay is broken. For these, an HVAC expert should be called in. Pings and dings, however, are usually just from metal ductwork expanding and contracting and probably don’t need a repair. Source: BottomLineInc.com Faster drywall repairs – For quicker and easier drywall patches, try using self-sticking hole patches. These stiff metal patches eliminate the need for squaring a hole, putting in wood backer boards, and buying,

cutting and taping drywall. They are typically available in 8-inch squares so they are perfect for small repairs. Source: FamilyHandyman.com Two-part epoxy – With so many one-part epoxy wood fillers to choose from, why mess with a two-part product? Unlike most one-part fillers, epoxy doesn’t shrink as it hardens. That means you can fill a deep crater or even rebuild a missing part without shrinkage cracks or adding layers of filler. So time spent mixing actually saves time later—and gives you better results.
