Nickel Plate receives $10K grant By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com Nickel Plate Arts, an arts organization that serves communities along the Nickel Plate Rail Line in Hamilton and Tipton Counarts ties, has received a $10,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to support community building efforts in Hamilton County’s Jackson Township. The organization said the funding will help invest in the creative economies of communities battling population decline. The grant will fund several significant initiatives in Atlanta, Arcadia and Cicero, including the development of strategic plans to strengthen arts and culture in each community. Specific projects include a makerspace and collaborative arts workspace in Atlanta; a series of community centered arts events in Cicero; and an operating plan for the Arcadia Arts & Heritage Depot. “It’s easy for our attention to be diverted to Noblesville and Fishers because those communities are larger and more robust,” Nickel Plate Arts Director Aili McGill stated in a press release. “But we think that our greatest impact in 2017 will be in Jackson Township, through the unification and strengthening of the projects outlined in our grant application.” Grassroots efforts will include public art events, classes for children and adults and professional resources for creative entrepreneurs. “We are excited to be able to help fuel the

arts-related efforts that have just started bubbling up in Atlanta and Cicero and are very happy to be able to help Arcadia’s Arts and Heritage depot find new vitality for the future,” McGill stated. “We are so grateful for the Duke Foundation’s willingness to invest in the creative economy and envision an inspiring future for the Nickel Plate Arts region.” “Community vitality involves more than just jobs, businesses and economic development,” said Mark LaBarr, Duke Energy Indiana government and community relations manager for Hamilton County. “The arts enhance and promote a quality of life that transcends economics. We’re pleased to support artistic endeavors already underway in Atlanta, Arcadia and Cicero.”

Grant to fund playground rehab By Renee Larr • news@currentnoblesville.com Indiana University Health North and Saxony hospitals recently named Hamilton County Parks and Rechamilton county reation as the recipient of their Physical Activity Priority Grant. HCPR received the $6,000 grant because of its commitment to health and physical activity. Each year, IUHN and Saxony hospitals grant community benefit dollars to various nonprofits in Hamilton County whose missions align with that of IU Health. “We look to provide grants to organizations that want to help address one of Hamilton County’s identified community health priorities: physical activity and nutrition, access to health care, behavioral health and older adults and aging,” said Joy E. Davis, manager of community engagement at IU Health North and Saxony hospitals. “The Parks Department does great work in encouraging physical activity among Hamilton County residents, and IU Health supports their initiatives. We know the parks department will be able to do more to enhance their offerings within our community.” HCPR plans to use the grant to help defray

the cost of rehabbing and expanding the playground equipment in Geist Park. “Approval for appropriation of those funds will need to be provided by IU Health and our park board,” said Don Nicholls, HCPR resource development specialist. “Upon approval by both groups, the project planning will commence immediately.” IUHN and HCPR partnered together in 2016 through the hospital’s Day of Service program. Volunteers from both hospitals worked at Cool Creek Park in Westfield to make improvements. They plan to continue working together for Day of Service 2017.

Janet Gilray keeps history alive with ‘Antique Stories & Antique Songs’ By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com

meet janet gilray

For nearly a year, local musician and “public historian” Janet Gilray has spent time teaching people in the commucover story nity about their history through music. Her regular series, “Antique Songs & Antique Stories,” takes place on the second Saturday of each month at Old Picket Fence, an antique store in downtown Noblesville that sits at the corner of Logan and Ninth streets. “It begins when the first person walks through the door,” Gilray said. “It may be an elderly couple or a young family, whoever, I start a little song. I use anecdotal information to launch into something melodic.” Gilray said the series began last spring, near the beginning of Indiana’s bicentennial year. While performing, she becomes a character, Miss Melody, an old schoolhouse marm, which can also be seen each year at the Indiana State Fair’s Pioneer Village. “As a public historian, I encourage others to explore history through artifacts, antiques, old China that your grandmother had, old songs she used to hum,” Gilray said. “Kids should have an early awareness that there’s history around them and to know to ask questions – ask your grandma, ask your granddad. There’s always a story that ties in. And if you look for clues when you’re in downtown Noblesville, they’re all around.” The songs she sings are

Janet Gilray is a founding member of Legacy Keepers, a nonprofit organization that connects youth and families to older generations of music and life. Originally from the Eagletown/Sheridan area, Gilray moved to California, where she lived for two decades. She served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps. She holds degrees from California State University and Chapman University. Gilray moved back to Noblesville in 2005 and spends her time taking part in and promoting historical and musical events within the community and teaching music lessons.

on a list of “Keeper Tunes.” Old Picket Fence owner Rosie Hoistion has a motto “every item has a story,” but Gilray said she takes from that “every song has a story.” For example, “Mary Had a Little Lamb” is a true story. “That actually happened in 1802,” Gilray said. “A principal of the school wrote down what happened when a little lamb followed the girl right up to the blackboard when he was there to observe her teacher. ‘Happy Birthday’ came from a nursery school teacher in Kentucky in the late 1800s, and it’s traveled all around the world. That’s the history that we keep finding. “What’s the oldest song in your brain?” Gilray continued. “‘Home on the Range’ is a good one. It gets everybody in the whole room singing, and not a lot know that it was (part of) John Lomax’s collecting of cowboy songs on the prairie back in the 1900s with an old Victrola. This one guy went around for years

as part of a thesis to document these songs in a 3-inch-thick volume of cowboy songs that were sung by rote. People had little iPod brains with 200 songs embedded.” For her master’s degree, Gilray spent time researching best methods for teaching. She said she “wanted to explore and further the effect of music as far as motivating children to learn.” Years later, in 2007, she would publish her book, “Voices in Time,” a music book teaching American history through song. “It’s really to help children optimize their learning opportunities, to make them feel good in school, even if it’s only one song per day or per chapter in a class,” she said. Gilray said when she moved back to Indiana after more than 20 years of being away from her Hoosier roots, she landed in Indianapolis but was drawn to Noblesville for its rich history. “I am encouraged by Noblesville,” she said. “When they say (they want) to revitalize the downtown district, and we’re now a new arts district, talk about vitality. Nothing puts out a welcome mat like music.”

Legislature: Make a choice Is infrastructure the new battle cry for increased taxes? The liberals have global warming as a key arrow in their quiver to raise taxes and to institute regulations. And now, Republicans have decided they, too, need their own arrow, and it just might be infrastructure. They think raising taxes for infrastructure improvements is an innocuous approach for the exercise. We know Republicans don’t really believe in all the smaller government/less spending blather they’ve espoused for years. Granted, Republicans serving in our state Legislature are far better at managing a budget than are the Republicans serving in Washington, but that’s quite a low bar. We’re disappointed our legislators have started to embrace an increase in our gasoline tax before actually debating it; they seem in absolute pain to raise those fees. Just wait; if it happens, some of those dollars will go toward funding mass transit, to which, you might know, we are opposed for our region. The larger question becomes this: Why is the General Assembly not negotiating with Washington? Of every gas tax dollar sent to Washington’s “highway account,” Indiana is returned 92 cents. Can we get someone in the Statehouse fighting for the rest of us? Or maybe use the state’s surplus (yes, we have been over-taxed) to fly President Trump here on Air Force One to negotiate the deal … in about 15 minutes? We think it’s time legislators prioritize the spending of our tax dollars. Maybe they need say we can have infrastructure spending or we can have early childhood education, but we can’t have both. Commentary by Danielle Wilson

Commonplace miracles Editor’s note: This columnist’s essay in the editions of Jan. 31, was, indeed, in reference to the inauguration, not the subsequent women’s march. To read that column, please visit www. youarecurrent.com.

Commentary by Terry Anker Former President Ronald Reagan called it a “commonplace occurrence.” Yet he took careful note that, “In the eyes of many in the world, this every four-year ceremony we accept as normal is nothing less than a miracle.” Sure, we have contentious, long and expensive campaigns. We divide ourselves into all manner and sort of identity groups. If no real distinction exists, we scurry about eager to create new categories to be celebrated, protected, attacked and over-generalized. We vote to, at long last, break from it all, return to the mundane and sublime realities of our own lives. We relax a bit. We breathe. The pause gives us much-needed opportunity to gain perspective, even if the fervent protests of a few linger beyond the

November end-point. Do we believe, or simply hope, that our protagonists will boldly carry our aspirations now that we have bestowed them with power? Or, do we regroup to organize resistance and plan for a replacement? Regardless of our personal position on the current state of leadership, most of us find other things to do once an election has passed. But in the imperial city we call our nation’s capital, the courtesans scramble for standing in a new order. Filling luxury airport lounges and seated at the Round Robbin Bar in the famed Willard Hotel, the K Street consultants, lawyers, lawmakers, professional protestors, media and other elites scheme and cajole to find favor and seek advantage. Political theater is played in acts. As one ends, another begins. Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. You may email him at terry@ youarecurrent.com.

I turned 45 last week. Four. Five. Sounds old when I think about it, which has been a lot recently as I’ve battled humor a cold while failing miserably at juggling my knives of work, kids, Doo and ever-present dirty dishes. But here’s the thing, I don’t feel old. I don’t feel like I’m at the half-way point of life; that the next four decades are going to suck now that I need reading glasses and calcium. I actually feel great. I’m for the most part healthy, strong and, on occasion, even the teeniest bit wise. I know I’d much rather be 45 than 25, and with my children mere steps from being out the door, I’m truthfully looking forward to my 50s (because according to the commercials, once I’m AARP eligible, I’ll spend all of my time traveling to exotic locations, spoiling precocious but adorable grandkids and either fishing with Doo or playing bingo with gal-pals. Can’t wait!). Part of this youthful “spirit” is the fact that both my parents and Doo’s are still looking good in their 70s. Thanks to hair dye, fitness programs and bionic body parts, “the elderly” don’t appear to be so. I’m not saying that they aren’t old, because believe me, they definitely are (smiley face emoji). It’s just that, relative to memories of my own grandparents, Mamaw, Judge, Grams and Pops, are not only still in the game but playing really well. And if they’re not calling for subs yet, then I sure as shoot won’t either. Go team! I’m also lucky to have two outspoken daughters who don’t think twice about announcing that my clothes are “so last season” or that my makeup is “not on point.” I credit them with keeping my often questionable “style” at least in this decade. And my sons make certain I’m always abreast of the latest tech gadgets, “must-watch” shows and mom-appropriate slang. Basically, I have handlers that keep me young, even if it’s only to ensure I don’t embarrass them in public. So bring it on, 45. I’ll be one step closer to bingo. Peace out.

Carter’s Play Place welcomes all By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Adam Meents knows what it’s like to be a parent of a child with special needs. He has two children, 8-year-old twins new biz Melanie and Carter. Carter is severely autistic, and Meents found a way to create a business to include all children in playtime. “Most (special needs) kids have siblings to help them with the stimulation of being around typical kids for play,” Meents said. “We want to be open for all kids, and it reverses the stigma.” Carter’s Play Place opened in Westfield in September, and the building has sensory friendly equipment so all children can play together. There’s also a toddler room and a quiet room for children that need it. Meents said one of the best aspects is the staff, which all have ties to special needs in the community. “There’s many parents out there of special needs kids that feel like they are compelled to explain that to other parents, and you can imagine how quickly that can get old,” Meents said. “My staff in there sympathize and empathize because they’re living it. It’s great to have the right people in the business to really interact with the kids in a way they can understand. (The kids) are staying in a concentrated play area where it’s safe and secure,

and parents know it’s a hard time for them to get hurt and more impossible for them to get out and get away from being safe. That’s important for the community because you have to have a safe and secure place that’s big enough. These kids can be rambunctious.” Meents, a Carmel resident, runs the business with Joe Blamer of Ohio and Brandon Warren of Noblesville. Meents works in Fishers during the week and visits Carter’s Play Place on the weekends. For more, visit cartersplayplace.com.

Four fitness apps to try Commentary by Mike Robertson In recent years, one of the biggest areas of tech growth has been in the form of fitness apps for your smartphone. views There are literally thousands of fitness apps out there. Here are four helpful ones to aid you in your fitness journey. Tabata Timer Pro Price: $2.99. A few years ago, finding a great interval timer was very difficult. Now there are tons, but this is one of the best. Tabata Timer Pro is great because it does the obvious stuff (like setting work/rest ratios), but it also allows you to program a “warning” bell before the set starts. An added bonus is the fact that you can have your own music playlists going in the background. Whether it’s the cheap price, the functionality or the music options, this is the only interval timing app you’ll ever need. Headspace Price: 10 sessions free; subsequent inapp purchases. Everyone knows you should meditate, but few actually do. Headspace is a great app if you’re ready to take the next step. “Andy,”

part of the app, will guide you through your meditation sessions. All it takes is 10 minutes, a quiet room and some headphones. BioForce Price: Free download, but package is $194. BioForce HRV tracks your heart rate variability, which is an indicator of autonomic nervous system functionality and recovery. BioForce HRV helps you objectify how you feel, how your body is recovering, and helps you determine how hard you should train on any given day. This app is quite pricey, but the benefit you receive, coupled with the length of time you’ll use it, makes it worth your while. Sleep Pillow Price: Free. Sleep is the cheapest and easiest thing we can do to expedite recovery. If you’re serious about training, then you need to be serious about recovery.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day in the Carmel Arts & Design District on Feb. 11 news@currentnoblesville.com The Saturday before Valentine’s Day will be a romantic evening in the Carmel Arts & Design District. On Feb. 11, there will be a Valentine’s holidays trolley available from 5 to 9 p.m. The free trolley will take riders around Main Street and through the heart of downtown Carmel. It’s a way to beat the cold or rest your feet as you explore places to shop, browse and dine on a Saturday evening. Live music will take place in many of the art galleries along Main Street and the galleries will keep later hours so families, friends and couples can stop in to see the numerous arts exhibits and works by local artists. Many of the pieces are for sale for a quick Valentine’s gift. To help guide people on their walks, there will be a scavenger hunt with prizes available. Each participating gallery on the scavenger hunt will have roses available for attendees as well.

Need more ideas on what to do on a Saturday night in the Carmel Arts & Design District? Check out some of these places. • Enjoy a glass (or bottle) of wine at Peace Water Winery (37 W. Main St.). In addition to its intimate indoor space, its outdoor dining has heaters to keep you warm even in February. They don’t serve food but you can order carryout from many nearby restaurants such as Bazbeaux Pizza (111 W. Main St.). • Sample some beers at The Pint Room (110 W. Main St.). The Carmel location offers 124 drafts, and at any time there are 50 to 70 local Indiana tappings, including beer, cider and mead. The Pint Room even offers something for the kids, which is a draft line of non-alcoholic root beer. • Enjoy a romantic dinner at Donatello’s Italian Restaurant (9 W. Main St.). For Valentine’s Day and the weekend before, Donatello’s will be offering specials on sparkling wine, fresh seafood and housemade desserts.

For more, visit hotchicken.com. (Above) Joella’s team members Tina Mason and Joi Norman had fun taking Mike Kueper’s (Fishers) order. Old Town of Tallinn, Estonia, from Toompea. (Photo by Don Knebel)

Tallinn: the old and the new Commentary by Don Knebel Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, includes one of Europe’s best preserved medieval city centers. It is also one of the world’s travel most tech-savvy cities. The city now known as Tallinn was founded on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland sometime before 1154, when the town appeared on a Muslim cartographer’s map. After the town was captured by Denmark in 1219, it was named Reval. Strategically located between Russia and Scandinavia, Reval became an important medieval trading center. In 1285, it joined the Hanseatic League, a confederation of northern European market towns. Merchants built large homes in an area near the port now called Old Town, protected by stone walls with cylindrical towers topped by conical roofs. In about 1500, wealthy residents added a 400-foot-tall spire to Old Town’s St. Olaf’s Church, making it among the tallest structures in the world at the time. Toompea, a hill overlooking Old Town, was originally a separate town but joined Reval in 1877. Reval

changed its name to Tallinn in 1918 when Estonia declared its independence from the Russian Empire. An 11th century castle on Toompea now houses the Estonian Parliament. Tallinn, with a population of about 450,000, is home to 32 percent of all Estonians and generates more than half of Estonia’s GDP. One of the most digitally connected cities in the world, Tallinn, the birthplace of Skype, has the largest number of startup companies per capita in Europe. In 2007, Tallinn residents participated in the world’s first internet election. In 2013, London’s Daily Mail called Tallinn one of the seven smartest cities in the world. Tallinn attracts more than 4 million visitors a year. Many get a great view of historic Old Town from atop nearby Toompea. In 1997, Tallinn’s Old Town and Toompea were collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Don Knebel is a local resident who works for Barnes & Thornburg LLP. Dispatches Cricket flour — Want to try something a little different next time you make chocolate chip cookies? Why not add crickets! Cricket flour is crickets that are roasted, ground, and mixed with some type of grain flour, into a nutty-tasting, highprotein, high-fiber, environmentally friendly flour—the newest food trend. It can boost the nutrient value of your favorite baked goods. To try some, visit exoprotein.com or BittyFoods.com. Source: BottomLinePersonal.com

Unstick glasses — If you have glasses stacked and stuck together, this should get them unstuck. Submerge the bottom glass in hot water, which will expand it, then pour ice-cold water in the top glass, which will contract it. Then you should be able to pull the glasses apart easily. Don’t waste lemons — If you need only a few drops of lemon juice, avoid cutting the lemon in half - it will dry out quickly that way. Instead, puncture the fruit with a metal skewer and squeeze out exactly what you require. Source: Esquire
