City looks to ‘reinvent’ Seminary Park space By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com With the late-April opening of Federal Hill Commons at the western gateway of Noblesville’s downtown on the horizon, city officials say they’re discussing downtown options for the 1.3-acre Seminary Park that sits on the eastern 300 block of 10th Street. On March 1, a presentation was made in executive session by city administration to the Noblesville Parks Board for Seminary Square, a development project that proposed the city sell 0.88 acres of the park for the construction of 12 homes. The project also proposed making enhancements to the remainder of the park, according to a statement from the city. However, after feedback and discussion among city staff and parks representatives, the project is not moving forward after it was determined unfeasible for that specific site. In response to an article and opinion piece in another local news outlet, the city also said in its statement that the purpose of the March 1 presentation in a non-public meeting was to hear initial, internal feedback from parks board members before making the information public. “This conversation was an early step in

the process,” the statement reads. “If favor was there, the next steps were to meet with Noblesville Preservation Alliance, notify other community groups and then propose it publicly before ever being presented at a public meeting, unlike the March 14 date inaccurately published in the story.” “A majority of the events that had taken place in Seminary Park are moving to Federal Hill Commons,” Mayor John Ditslear said in the statement. “As our staff was looking at ways to reinvent that space, we were approached by a developer with this idea. I’m disappointed at the precedent this sets. Our staff needs to feel it can bring ideas forward or present during an executive session where all of the information discussed is considered to be confidential, without information being leaked. It also unfairly worried concerned citizens and put the city in a bad

light.” Moving forward, the mayor’s office has said it wants Seminary Park to be fully utilized after some of its programming – like the Noblesville Cultural Arts Commission’s Shakespeare in the Park and Sunday concerts – is moved to Federal Hill Commons. “We’ve heard from the passionate residents that were concerned about their neighborhood park,” Ditslear told Current. “The parks department is exploring programming opportunities at Seminary Park.” Ditslear said any future enhancements or equipment would have to be approved by the park board or common council, as budgets for both bodies have already been approved for 2017 and did not include changes to Seminary Park. “The plan is to keep Seminary Park as Seminary Park,” Ditslear said. “The city is not currently looking at any developments for this land. We are looking for another area in the city where the type of development that was presented (Seminary Square) could be used. “One idea could be to better engage with local residents at Seminary Park with Rec2Go – where the parks department brings recreation to neighborhoods,” Ditslear added. “The parks team is full of creative people, and I know they are working on opportunities that we can try to implement this year.”

Dress to Impress starts at Janus By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com An idea originally targeted to help one person has expanded into a closetful of clothes that helps many. giving back Kara Critchlow, an employment specialist at Janus Developmental Services, encountered an issue that arose quickly with one of Janus’ clients who was prepping for an interview. “We had (an interview) come up quickly, and she’s (the client) like, ‘I don’t have anything to wear.’ She didn’t have anything, so I lent her my own clothes and thought this comes up quite a bit, actually, where we don’t have time to wait,” Critchlow said. Westfield Washington Township Trustee Danielle Carey Tolan heard about Janus launching a Dress to Impress program and decided to step in. “I heard about the program, and I said, ‘We have to be involved,’” Tolan said. The township office, 1549 E. Greyhound Pass, serves as a drop-off location for Dress to Impress, and the program’s closet is already filling. Janus Community Services Manager Becke Nauyokas said the township office and Janus are primary drop-off locations, but the organization wants to have more soon. Everything from clothes, shoes, purses,

belts, ties and accessories are accepted. Nauyokas said there has already been one success story with the program, which began last month. “So far, there’s been a gentleman who had an interview and he had everything but the tie,” Nauyokas said. “He came in and was nervous and said, ‘I just wish I had a tie.’ So we went through what we already had donated and found a tie and went to YouTube to find out how to tie that tie. You could just see his confidence level rise. He went to his interview, he did great, he got the job and he’s already started working.” Nauyokas said Janus also picks up items. Students prep to exhibit MillerShift at fourth Learning Showcase event

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com Throughout the 2016-17 school year, Noblesville Schools students district-wide have been working on innovative projects that will be displayed to the community at cover story the fourth annual MillerShift Learning Showcase, which will take place at Noblesville High School March 16. For the past month, students in Julie Gunning’s fourth-grade class at White River Elementary have been researching Noblesville and some of its most unique features for their booth at the showcase. Gunning and students will show their video, “An EagleEye View of the Community,” which will reveal what kids find neat about Noblesville and the downtown area. “We thought we would do the courthouse because it’s one of Noblesville’s monuments,” said Kate Rollins, 10, a student in Gunning’s class. “(In our project) we explained a little bit about the courthouse and a little bit about what was inside and when it was built. We went to Alexander’s afterwards and included photos of us eating ice cream because it’s not a place you see everywhere, only a place you see in Noblesville.” Other student videos will feature Noblesville staples like Hamilton Town Center, restaurants and historic landmarks. “My group focused on the Hamilton County Humane Society,” said Carson Mertens, 10, also a student in Gunning’s class. “We went and interviewed a person who works there.” “Other groups in our class did their video on Matteo’s (Ristorante Italiano) and Potter’s Bridge,” said McCoy Fulk, 10, also a student in Gunning’s class. Although not every student shot videos of notable Noblesville places, each wrote welcome letters that will be distributed at local hotels for guests. The letters inform about fun and unique things to do from a kid’s perspective. White River Elementary Principal Rebecca Dicus is in for a new experience, too, because she has never attended a Learning Showcase. Dicus became principal at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year and said she’s excited to see the four groups from the school that will be featured but also groups from other schools. “This is just a really great opportunity for teachers to bring students and highlight some of the real-world learning connections that they’re making in the classroom,” Dicus said. “It will be neat for everyone to see what the other schools are doing with their kids.” The large community event spans a majority of common areas in the high school and attracts hundreds each year. “I am a firm believer that the schools have a huge impact in the whole community. So regardless of if people have kids or not, it’s important that people see what we’re doing in the schools because their taxes support us,” Dicus said. “I think anytime we can open up what we’re doing for the community to see, it brings value to our purpose and what the students are doing. A lot of the feedback that we get from parents when we do things similar to the Learning Showcase is, ‘Wow, we didn’t do this when we were in school.’”

ATTEND THE 2017 MILLERSHIFT LEARNING SHOWCASE • What: A two-hour event featuring Noblesville Schools’ 10 schools and their programs, students, teachers and projects. The doors of our lives

Commentary by Danielle Wilson

Commentary by Terry Anker Famed American inventor Alexander Graham Bell once said, “When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.” Too often his words reflect in our own lives. We set course planning to move from one space to another without considering a contingency plan. Like people exiting a crowded theater only using the door that is propped back rather than opening any of an array of other adjacent exit doors. We imagine our route, then line up as if our brains cannot conceive of another. Yet whether we can find a new course on the map or not, life continues to move. We pass along its corridors barely noticing until we find a portal locked, obstructing our smooth passage. We strive diligently to bypass it and, in failing, collapse in our own grief believing that our lives will go no further, trapped by our own conception. Yet even if our work creates a path to open, get around or simply break through the barrier to allow us to continue along our way, we might expend such vast resources so as to turn the victory into a loss. How do we know it is time to look for another portal? With time comes wisdom, and our own measure of grit is determined. We learn when to pound the door and when to find another. But isn’t it all made easier if we remember Bell’s admonishment that it is a rare journey with only one path to its final destination? Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. You may email him at terry@youarecurrent.com.

BEL I EVE  I T ! Our nation has all sorts of arcane, nonsensical laws on the books. Each week, we’ll share one with you. In Ogden, Utah, persons are only allowed to keep one cow on their property. Source: dumblaws.com

Give the old gung-ho Commentary by Richard K. Egan To be sure, the world we live in isn’t what it used to be. Well, really, nothing is anymore. What was the world back then, and was it any more fun than now? Do we still say that those were the good old days? We had tar-paved streets over cobblestone and the car you drove had to be black. Mother hung clothes on a line in the backyard, and dear ol’ dad shoveled the coal into a shoot. Oh, yes, we cast our vote for the candidate we wished and forgot them until the next ballot, as the elected did the same to us. Boy, have things changed. First radio then television, and now internet. The quickest we used to get breaking news was an extra edition of the newspaper sold on street corners. Now, it’s all instantly being slung at us by so many sources it is hard to keep up with it all. Breaking news, no news, fake news, slanted news, right or left news.

In today’s world, it’s hard to differentiate fact from fiction. Everyone seems to have the right answers, which makes for strange bedfellows. Right or wrong, we still have to live with each other whether we want to or not. This is still our country, our land of the free, our heritage and ours to have and to hold. Somehow, somewhere, someone must stand tall to unite us as one people under God, as our forefathers intended. That someone is you. It starts with you and then another until we again have the United States of America. Don’t give up or in, give the old gung-ho to ‘make America great again.’ Richard K. Egan is a retired interior decorator, born a Buckeye, Hoosier at heart. He has been married to his sweetheart Evelyn for 62 years. They have five children, 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is active in the Indianapolis Aero Club as past president and sergeant of arms.

Recently, I had between 11 and 15 teenage girls asleep in the basement. I lost track of the headcount as soon as they humor swarmed the mini-chocolate fountain with sharp wooden skewers and marshmallows. It was survival at that point, people, so I quickly fled to the relative peace and quiet of the upstairs, shoved a beach towel into the crack at the base of the door (to block both the high-pitched squeals of delight and the overpowering scent of floral deodorant/perfume) and offered up a few Lenten Hail Mary’s to ensure I was alive to see the sun rise on the morrow. Success! I awoke the following morning actually feeling rested. Of course, I had slept fitfully until about 2 a.m. when I couldn’t take the stair-running or the kitchen-banging any longer. But I was smart this year. Instead of channeling “Mommie, Dearest” in full facial mask mode and confronting the masses directly, I simply texted my darling daughter to have everyone prep for shut down. She quickly replied “Gucci,” and I congratulated myself on using technology to communicate with my newly minted 13-year-old. Did I mention these are all competitive dancers? And that within 30 minutes of their arrival this hormonal plague of locusts had already drank and discarded four large bottles of orange Fanta, plowed their way through three bags of Doritos and were clamoring for cheese pizza while attempting to shish-kebob-me on their way to chocolatey goodness? It was only 5:30 p.m.! I can tell you my basement floor looked like a makeshift disaster shelter, with little cocooned bodies lying everywhere. And FYI, I counted 14 before the smell did me in. Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a contributing columnist. You may email her at danielle@ currentincarmel.com.

Bags to Riches fundraiser set By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Tracy Miller figures everyone loves to get a good deal on a handbag or purse, especially when it’s for a philanthropy good cause. The fifth annual Bags to Riches, a donation and resale fundraiser, is set for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 21 in room K130 at IU Health North Hospital, 11700 N. Meridian St., Carmel. “We basically sell gently used handbags, tote bags, golf bags, wristlets and purses,” said Miller, director of philanthropy of IU Health North. “And 100 percent goes to our patients in need.” Miller said the goal is to raise $5,000. Bags start at $1. Some higher-end bags are on the silent auction table with bid pages. “We had a Chanel purse go for $500 in the auction in the past,” Miller said. The collection period is March 25 to April 15. The bags can be dropped off at IU North. In addition, two senior living communities, Carmel Health & Living, 118 Medical Dr., and Copper Trace, 1250 W. 146th St., Westfield, serve as drop-off points.

“The more bags we get in, the more money we make for our patients,” Miller said. Miller said the first four Bags to Riches have generated approximately $15,000 for patients in need. The funds are used for patients’ transportation to and from the hospital. “Sometimes people arrive after an accident and they can’t go home in the clothes they arrived in because they could be soiled, torn or ripped, so we get them something to wear,” Miller said. “We provide food vouchers. For example, (if) a child is Lifelined from the northern part of the state and the family is in tow, we provide food for the first night to help them so they can get settled here. So it’s patient support that is desperately needed in a time of crisis.” The event is run by Jill Dodson, and IU Health North Hostpital social worker. The hospital’s social work department runs the sale. The donations are tax deductible. There is no fee for sale entry and no parking fee. Cash, checks and major credit cards are accepted. This year, they were ready to try something new. “We thought we could do something fun for the community,” Bishop said. Both women are artisans with their own businesses. They have participated in local markets and craft shows in the past. Bishop owns Keri Bishop Designs, featuring handmade children’s items like bibs, burp cloths, dolls and more. Corbett’s business is called The Painted Pallet. She makes custom pallet signs with hand-lettered designs. “We were already in this world and thought that hosting an event would be such a great way to showcase other awesome local artisans,” Bishop said. “We chose to do handmade only, focusing on people who create and

design.” Thus, Indy MADE Market was born. The event will feature 55 makers selling jewelry, clothing, accessories, home decor and more. It will be held inside the Llama Barn at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds March 18. “I’ve had my business for over eight years. I’ve been in and out of craft

shows. The Llama Barn was my favorite venue that I’d ever been in,” Bishop said. “It has a rustic feel, but it’s also heated or cooled, depending on the weather.” Proceeds from the nonprofit event will go directly to the baseball team. The other 10 team members and their families will provide supportive help with parking, admissions and snacks. “The team is only taking exactly what they need. If we have an overage, that will go back to the community,” Bishop said. There is a $5 admission fee. Tickets can be purchased online through the VIP program. VIPs will get to bypass the entrance line and receive a wristband and special discounts from the vendors. Kids 15 and under are free. “We’re proud of this event and we’re excited for everyone to come and see,” Bishop said. For more information, a complete vendor list and to purchase VIP tickets, visit indymademarket.weebly. com.

Blueprint for Improvement: Converting bedrooms into master suites Commentary by Larry Greene

After solutions:

After

The goal was to design a master suite that utilized the existing home’s square footage, while creating a more functional floor plan. 1. To create functional space for the master suite, two small bedrooms were converted into a large master bedroom with a vaulted ceiling and walk-in closet. 2. To create a larger master bath, two full baths were transformed into one full bath and a larger master bath. This was accomplished by creating a two-foot bump-out for the small amount of additional square footage needed. 3. A double vanity and large walk-in shower were accomplished with this new layout. 4. For additional daylight, three skylights were added in the roof system: two in the bedroom and one in the closet. In addition, the existing windows were replaced with larger windows to maximize the daylight and view to the exterior.

Before Background Info: This 1950’s home in the Devonshire neighborhood of Indianapolis was in need of a functional, spacious master suite.

Before problems: The owners were looking for design strategies to develop a more efficient master suite layout without a full addition. This required some strategic space planning within their existing house footprint. Because of the wooded lot, the interior spaces needed additional daylight as well.
