A stormy lady Current in Noblesville Mother Nature let loose on Noblesville and Hamilton County last week with rain, lighting and severe storms causing at least one house fire in Noblesville, plus flooding water, particularly along the banks of White River and Cicero Creek. As many as 10,000 lightning strikes were recorded for Hamilton County early last week. The Noblesville Fire Department was kept busy in the middle of the night June 22 with calls from residents who believed their home was struck by lightning. One of those reports turned out to be true when the NFD responded to a residential attic fire at 376 Myers Lake Drive. Here’s a look at some of the damage around the city.

By Zach Dunkin Current in Noblesville. Mary Sue Rowland, described by Noblesville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Chairman Cindy White as a woman with “crazy pasRowland sion” and one who always asks “Why don’t we do this?” was recognized for her persistent work for Noblesville with the chamber’s annual Pinnacle Award. Presented by White at the chamber’s membership breakfast at Purgatory Golf Club June 23, the award honors a person who represents outstanding achievement in community service.
Current in Noblesville
Rowland’s determination has been vital in the development of the historic downtown area through expanding opportunities for housing, new development and improvements such as parking, beautification, holiday decorations and façade grants. Noblesville Mayor from 1988-1996, Rowland currently serves on the City Council and several other committees, including Keep Noblesville Beautiful. “You know what my philosophy is,” said Rowland, given a standing ovation by the chamber members. “I’ll quit when they close the (coffin) lid. As long as I can walk into a meeting and know one person there, I’ll keep coming. “I do love this community.”

OUR VIEWS
It is our position that the predatory nature of tax incentives and other bribes to lure business from one municipality to another does not benefit taxpayers. Instead, the incentives arms race only serves to escalate in both tensions and expense. Yet we have been conditioned to accept that all growth is good and that competition for growth, by extension, must be good. Businesses waste away without the benefit of the market. And some, such as pro sports teams, feel entitled to demand taxpayer support or, like naughty kids, threaten to take their ball home if they don’t get their way. Municipalities are all too happy to support the habit. Is all growth necessarily good? Should taxpayers subsidize private enterprise? When public officials compete with each other, using taxes to entice new or expanding businesses, the process put in motion benefits no one. We believe communities should use a business-friendly tax structure, appropriate zoning, high-quality infrastructure and an educated work force to attract and keep desirable enterprises.
Spilled opportunity
It is our opinion that a time of crisis is not a time to push a political agenda. The tragic oil spill in the Gulf has grabbed the attention of a nation. Never before have Americans seen such widespread destruction of nature and livelihoods. Our leaders seem unprepared and reluctant to deal with this crisis. Although BP, a privately held company, is responsible for the event and consequences, the impact on such a huge part of the American economy and its natural resources deserve a federal government response. The response, thus far, has been one of delay, blame and political opportunism. As Americans living on the gulf coast question how they will survive, our President presented an agenda of new clean energy. One is reminded of sugarplums and pipe dreams. What is needed now is action. Americans want to plug the oil leak. Clean up the oil. Get workers back to work on the oil rigs. Get the fishermen, shrimpers, and everyone else who rely on the gulf for their income back to work. Blame can be placed later. They say timing is everything. Now is not the time to give sway to political donors.

City group will learn from All-America bid, try again
From the backshop Rowland’s Pinnacle honor is richly deserved Former Mayor Mary Sue Rowland deservingly has been rewarded for her innumerable contributions to this great city with the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce’s Pinnacle Award. It was bestowed upon Rowland, currently a member of the city council, for her dogged efforts in service to the community. We salute Rowland on the honor and the chamber for naming her this time around. ••• Noblesville Schools got a good one recently, when the school board gave a thumbs-up to bringing former Carmel assistant superintendent Steve Stephanoff aboard as assistant superintendent for human resources (we HATE that term, though. Call it what it is: personnel!). He’ll begin his duties before the school year launches. Supt. Libbie Conner loves Stephanoff’s wide range of experiences. True enough, and his skill set will benefit Noblesville long after he eventually retires. ••• Please help take a load off Cara Culp’s mind and volunteer for the city’s Fourth of July celebration activities. You’ll be stationed at Noblesville High School for two hours max. Did we mention the free pizza and the
Brian Kelly & Steve Greenberg chance to win a 32-inch HD television? Just pick one shift, at least: 6 to 8 p.m. or 8 to 10 p.m. Give Cara a call at 776.6367 or write her at cculp@noblesville.in.us, and tell her the boys from Current sent you. ••• Earlier this month, city officials down in Indiana ’s Haight-Ashbury District – aka Bloomington – said they’ll stop buying goods and services from companies based in Arizona as a result of the great southwest state’s stand on immigration. The city says it won’t send its officials to Arizona for conferences, either. We’re sure the good folks in ’Zona send their thanks to these “libs” for not visiting their state.
Stay HOME. BE MOVED.
COMMENTARY By Zach Dunkin The National Civic League, which annually awards 10 U.S. cities the distinction of being an All-America City, hasn’t heard the last from Noblesville. After missing the cut on its first try, the City of Noblesville plans to learn from its rookie experience and try again, according to Amy Shankland, delegation captain for the contingent that presented the city’s recent pitch in Kansas City. “We’ll reapply,” said Shanklin. “We’ll get feedback on what we did right and what we can improve on from the jury committee and try again.” Winners of the 61st annual awards were announced June 18. They were: • Chandler, Ariz. • Lynwood, Calif. • Rancho Cordova, Calif. • North Miami, Fla. • Acworth, Ga. • Des Moines, Iowa • Salisbury, Md. • Gastonia, N.C. • Mount Pleasant, S.C. • El Paso, Tex. The program recognizes neighborhoods, villages, towns, cities, counties and metro regions for outstanding civic accomplishments. To win, communities have to demonstrate an ability to address serious challenges with innovative, grassroots strategies that promote civic engagement

and cooperation between the public, private and nonprofit sectors. The contingent in Kansas City representing Noblesville included Mayor John Ditslear, Mike Hendricks, Mark Boice, Judi Johnson, Brandon Bennett, Nick Troski, John Beery, Cara Culp, and Shankland, all with the City of Noblesville; and Jay Miller, Calebe Coonce, Jacob Shankland, Matteo di Rosa, Bill Taylor, Bryan Glover, Sonya Lakey, Michelle Corrao, and Chandra Kumler, all representing the community. The community members spoke on how they worked with the city to help solve the three challenges that were outlined in Noblesville's All-America City application and offered their thoughts on why Noblesville should be named a top 10 All-America city. Shanklin said the Noblesville contingent gave its best shot, and was told by National Civic League President Gloria Rubio Cortés that the jury said "all of the presentations were good” and that she hadn't "heard that in four years." The Noblesville group's trip was sponsored by the Legacy Fund, the Hamilton County Convention and Visitor's Bureau, Hamilton County Co-Op and Uncle Henry's Candies of Cicero.

The redeeming qualities of the 'terrible twos' Commentary By Danielle Wilson As my almost 2-year-old niece threw her third tantrum of the morning in response to her already 2-year-old cousin’s Barbie theft, it occurred to me I could get good money for them on the black market. Kidding! I really like their parents, and they would not be happy with me if I up and sold their daughters right out from under them. But seriously, 2-year olds are bratty little creatures most of the time, with only a few redeeming qualities. I’ve really had to focus on these the last few months so as not to follow through with my illegal baby scam. Here’s what I’ve come up with. 1. They are cute. I’ve yet to meet an ugly child between the ages of 18 and 36 months. Even my twins, who were born looking like bald albino eaglets, were quite adorable by their second birthday. And one of the aforementioned nieces? She transformed from an 87-year-old man with a receding hairline to a Gerber baby with beautiful locks upon turning two. 2. They are cheaply entertained. Two-year olds do not need Xboxes, Nintendo DS’, or even creepy-eyed baby dolls that require real diapers. My nieces can play for hours with a five-cent bouncy ball, a copy of the New York Times and a discarded Reebok. 3. They still take naps. ‘Nough said. 4. They talk funny. Because their speech is still developing, two year olds have a unique propensity to say words incorrectly, inject an adorable lisp, and/or repeat words they shouldn’t. This can make for some hilarious moments, especially in public. “So sorry Father, I think she’s referring to a type of boat, a ship. 5. They think clean-up time is a game, simply because it has
its own song! 6. They’re small. If my middle-schooler dug his feet in and absolutely refused to take a shower, there’s really nothing I can physically do to force him. But a two year old? I can lift my niece up and off the floor with one hand and probably jog five miles with her in my pocket if I had to. 7. They haven’t figured out that there is nothing whatsoever binding them to the time-out chair. 8. They don’t have a fashion opinion yet. My daughters won’t let me within 10 feet of their closets when they are getting dressed, and heaven forbid I should protest a selected mini-skirt/blouse combo. But a two year old? I could put a floral sundress on a little boy and he would probably twirl for hours. 9. They’ll eat most anything. Chicken, peas, crayons, cat food. As long as it’s small and colorful, they’ll put it in their mouths. 10. Again, they are super cute. My younger niece can’t say my name, so she just calls “AnYell when she needs me. And despite what that nickname implies about my vocal levels, whenever she says it, I’m putty in her little grubby hands. So yes, the terrible twos are real, but they don’t have to be the end of a beautiful relationship with your child. Just stay focused on his good points and remembered that this is all just training for when you’re really going to want to sell them: high school. Peace out.

New kids on the mat: Tech Fall Wrestling Club By Pete Semple Current in Noblesville In downtown Noblesville, Mike Maloney is proving that anyone with enough determination can wrestle. But the coach of Tech Fall wrestling club is teaching more than just the skills of wrestling. He is teaching discipline and self-reliance. Since June 4, Maloney has coached this group meets on Fridays in the Boys and Girls Club building just off Conner Street. “I was asked to start coaching Guerin Catholic High Wrestling this season,” says Maloney. “Unfortunately, the ISHAA allows students to practice for certain sports only during certain time periods. In order for my guys to be competitive, they need to practice all year long. The only way I could accomplish this was to start a club that was not affiliated with the school.”

Dave Smith and Zac Nielsen challenge each other on the mat.
The club members certainly seem to enjoy it, anyway. It’s the kind of thing that many young children do naturally, but this has structure and discipline added to promote character growth. What do the parents think? Gary and Valeria Kitko are deeply invested in Tech Fall. Five of their six children wrestle, and Gary helps coach both the older and younger wrestlers. Why get their whole family involved? “It teaches the kids discipline and self-reliance,” says Gary. “If you give up, you get pinned and the match is over. You don’t get to come out and try to do better the next period. “If you walk off the mat knowing you gave it your all and it wasn’t enough to get the win, you train harder and try to give more the next time. It’s been great for our kids.”

Tech Fall has since expanded to around 30 members, ranging in age from 3 to 18. Maloney plans to add a Thursday practice during July. He also plans to eventually open his membership to men and women over the age of 18. The idea of younger children wrestling often generates a great deal of surprise because the sport has a reputation for being dangerous. Maloney isn’t concerned. “It’s just like any other sport,” he says. “Anything could happen at any time, but it’s not as deep a contact sport See as football lacrosse. our fullormenu at

You’re in a controlled environment with referees watching every move that goes on. I’ve even removed some of the moves that were once considered dangerous.” Fair enough. Maybe it isn’t too dangerous. But is it actively beneficial? Maloney certainly thinks so. “I think wrestling is kind of unique in that it teaches a team aspect of the sport but it also requires individual responsibility. You determine your own fate, but it’s still in a team format, and that’s something other sports don’t offer.”

Celebrating is an art, and we make the best of it Commentary By Krista Bocko With last week’s summer solstice and some soon-to-arrive birthday, I’ve been giving some thought to how we celebrate these special days. My family marks time with our Earth Cycle calendar, a beautifully illustrated poster of a circle which marks the months, seasons and the solstices, equinoxes and moon cycles. Our celebrations are simple. Most importantly, they are fun and pretty much stress-free. For our summer solstice celebration, my husband and kids simply roasted marshmallows over a backyard bonfire and caught fireflies. I was with my amazing book club women, and we discussed “living closer to the numinous wild” by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes, from Women Who Run With the Wolves. It was a perfect evening. Birthdays? Again, it’s simple. I don’t do fancy cakes, parties, or order custom-printed M&M’s. What we do is from the heart. We string up a special birthday banner, the birthday child
wears their birthday crown, and we show pictures and tell stories of each year of the child’s life, while they walk around the “sun” (a colored ball) holding the “earth” (another colored ball). They beam and feel so loved as we laugh and tie our stories like strings together, weaving them into a fabric of their life. We give a few simple presents, but they are not the focus. On full moon nights we wait and watch for the moon to come out, and run up and down the sidewalk in the moonlight, maybe in playsilk capes, and soak up some moonbeams. And this July we’re resuming our Summer Soiree, which we haven’t done for a few years. We look forward to re-connecting with friends on a hot summer night. It will be simple and perfect. And that, to me, is the Art of Celebrating. Krista Bocko, her husband and four children live in “Old Town.” Noblesville in a historic home. She can be reached at www. cachetwrites.blogspot.com
If Noblesville freezes over, she'll be ready COMMENTARY By Hannah Davis Those who know me know I don’t exactly dress like everyone else. Don’t worry, you won’t see chains or pumpkin buttons on my dresses. I’m not the girl who wears short-shorts and heels, nor am I the one in the corner who looks like she raided her grandma’s closet. In fact, if it were a different time of year, I’d look entirely normal. Alas, it is not, and I look like a freak. Why, you ask? Because it’s the middle of June, and I still wear a sweater – or some variance of a sweater – almost every single day. As for my bottom half, my hem rarely wanders above my knees. It pretty consistently hovers around the middle of my oh-so-pale calves. It’s not that I’m particularly modest; I’m just cold.

carmelFeSt – “the Winning team”
It’s countdown-time for CarmelFest. With the festival only a few days away, all of the CarmelFest board members and their committees have kicked into “high gear” to finalize all the festival plans and to manage all the behindthe-scenes details. The CarmelFest team of volunteers is committed to offering a community event packed with fun and entertainment for everyone. There is so much to see and do at CarmelFest – you may have a hard time choosing. But, for car enthusiasts, a must-see exhibit at the Festival (and in the parade) will be a replica of the 1911 Marmon Wasp #32 – Indianapolis 500 winning racecar. This race car was hand crafted by its owner, Bob
Van Note of Carmel. As a retired Indy Car mechanic, Bob has experience the thrills of racing first-hand. He has always been fascinated by early Indy car designs. Bob explained, “It took me over a year to design and build the chassis.” His attention to detail and quality craftsmanship are evident in this spectacular replica. The original Marmon Wasp was the winning car for the inaugural 1911 Indianapolis 500 Race. Car driver and designer, Ray Harroun, completed his record setting win on May 30, 1911 with a total time of 6 hours, 42 minute and 8 seconds to complete 200 laps. The Wasp, so named for its distinctively sharp-pointed, wasp-like tail and its yellow and black color scheme, was

You can become part of the CarmelFest Volunteer Team … there are still positions that need to be filled for the CarmelFest Celebration on Sunday-July 4th & Monday-July 5th. Volunteers of all ages are needed and welcome. Volunteers work in two-hour shifts and help out with the various aspects of the festival and the parade. Volunteers receive a free t-shirt and other goodies, plus they have lots of fun and make new friends!
I wear hoodies to the Fair because those big, bustling exhibition buildings are absolutely frigid. I wear wool to work because, well, let’s just say Hamilton County taxpayers are keeping their courthouse nice and chilly. I’m a far cry from being seasonally appropriate but hey, at least I’m comfy. Let us not forget that a cardigan, unlike a tank top, can always come off.
unlike most racecars of the period. The Wasp’s smoothly-cowled cockpit and long pointed tail helped reduce air drag. The Marmon Wasp car offered another innovation in design – a little item called a rear view mirror. As you are making your plans for CarmelFest, be sure to set aside time to admire Bob Van Note’s 1911 Marmon Wasp Replica Car. The car will be driven in the St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana Parade at CarmelFest by Bucky Horn. After the parade, the car will be on display in the Americana North Zone – located just north of the Carmel Fire Department. Storms warnings mean short night for mom and the kids Commentary By Leslie Webber I haven’t lost this much sleep since we had a newborn in our house. Lately just as bedtime – which happens to be my favorite time of day – rolls around the severe weather alerts start scrolling across the bottom of the television. For kids who look for any excuse to stall at bedtime it’s like winning the lottery. “Woo Hoo! Another storm warning! Mom, we can’t go to bed yet! It isn’t safe!” They just said a major storm will be in Noblesville in 10minutes and our bedtime is in 10 minutes!” There is no argument. I’m reluctant to tuck two kids into bed only to have to pull them out of bed and into the basement moments later. They wrangle an extra hour and wake up cranky the next morning. Once we are all settled into bed for the night, I can almost count on waking to thunder claps and lightning flashes around 3:30 a.m. My husband has the remarkable ability
to fall back to sleep within seconds of having a full-fledged conversation with me regarding I, on the other hand, lie awake long after the storms rumble through. It’s a tie between who wakes up more cranky – the kids or me. With a fire at a strip mall in Carmel, thought to be caused by lightning and news reports of flooded streets in Noblesville, our kids were desperate to see the curiosities. If we can’t go to the pool, they look for other ways to entertain themselves. They’ve kept a running tally of tree limbs blown down in our neighborhood. I am desperate for calm weather and a good night’s sleep. Either that or we may just start sleeping in the basement. Photo by Zach Dunkin

Super Bowl overflow Former Indianapolis tourism official Bill Benner was guest speaker at the June 23 Noblesville Chamber of Commerce breakfast at Purgatory Golf Club. Benner, the recent communications director for the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association, told the breakfast group that Hamilton County cities like Noblesville will realize a positive financial impact from the 2012 NFL Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. “It’ll fill your hotel rooms,” said Benner. “Even though Lucas Oil’s capacity is 72,000, there will be thousands who will arrive here without a ticket. We blocked off hotels about an hour out (from Indy) like Lafayette, Richmond and Columbus, and the proximity and quality of the hotels in this Hamilton County is a plus.” Benner left the ICVA to become Senior Associate Commissioner for External Affairs for the Horizon League, a college basketball league which includes Butler University. He will begin his new job July 1.

Noblesville woman gets a visit from her lifelong English pen pal By Zach Dunkin Current in Noblesville It all started with a 10-cent school fee and a 2-cent postage stamp. An ailing Franklin D. Roosevelt had just begun an unprecedented third term as U.S. president, and London still was under attack by Nazi forces in World War II. Four months later, Roosevelt would succumb to a cerebral hemorrhage, and by autumn the Germans and their V-1 bomb launching sites would be overrun by Allied Forces. But an overseas friendship which had begun when a curious schoolgirl from rural Van Buren, Ind., started exchanging letters with another teenager whose family had been evacuated from London to England’s “west country” to escape Nazi destruction, is alive and well today. Barbara Howell of Noblesville and Olive Wildish of West Sussex, England are lifelong “pen pals,” a vanishing art of letter-writing in an instant-message planet ruled by e-mail and social networking. “As a means of encouraging us to write, our high school English teacher gave us a list of pen pals from different countries,” recalled Barbara Howell, sitting in the comfort of her Pebblebrook neighborhood home. “We’d spend a dime – I’m not sure what for – to get a name and an address, and I picked Olive from England because I thought, ‘Well, at least we speak the same language.’ “It has been the best dime I’ve ever spent.” Earlier this month, dozens of friends and relatives joined the two lifetime pals in celebration of their enduring friendship and 80th birthdays, a party Barbara initially didn’t want until it was suggested that Olive fly here for a joint celebration. Olive was born June 19, 1930, just eight days later than Barbara.
Saved by the postman Correspondence between pen pals Barbara Howell and Olive Wildish might have ended shortly after it began if not for a dutiful English postman. Somehow the two friends lost track of one another shortly after graduation from high school. “I knew she had been working in Worthing,” said Barbara. “So, I wrote to what would be the postmaster in the U.S. to that person in England in care of Olive’s old address.” Olive’s father, whose last name was Buckle, was a bank manager in Worthing. “One day, the postman came into the branch and said, ‘Buckle mean anything?” said Olive. “My father said, ‘Yes, what is the problem?’ The postman answered, ‘I’ve got a letter for you.’ ” The two letter-writing friends soon picked up where they left off.
www.youarecurrent.com
“I didn’t think I would ever be coming again to be quite truthful,” said Olive, who, up until a couple of recent knee surgeries, had played tennis three times a week. “I’m just hoping our health will be good enough (so) that I can go over one more time and see Olive,’ said Barbara. This was Olive’s fourth trip to the U.S., third to Noblesville, and the first without her husband, Tony, who died last January. Barbara lost her husband, Dick, at age 80 in 2005. She counts the most recent photo of the four of them together in the backyard of their Noblesville home as one of her most prized possessions. “While we had so much in common, our cultures were so different and, we learned from each other with every letter,” said Barbara. “Still do.” From World War II through the growth of their families to deaths of family and friends, Barbara and Olive “kept up with all the news of the family,” as Olive said. Barbara still remembers the first letter Olive sent her. “She ended it with ‘cheerio!’ ” recalled Barbara. “I thought, ‘Well, isn’t that unusual?’ She still does it.” And when Barbara would mention something about her school class going to a hayride, Olive would write back asking, “What’s a hayride?” Over the next hour in Barbara’s living room, the two old friends exchanged stories - some of them contradictory, so many of them funny. They talked about the visits each had made to the other’s countries, the sights they had seen and experiences they shared. They spoke of the gifts they exchanged through the years – delicate pieces of China from Olive to Barbara and Barbara’s handmade ceramic pieces to Olive. And they laughed. A lot.

(Top) Barbara Howell (left) and Olive Wildish continue to learn about each other through letters, phone calls and periodic visits. (Above) Dozens of friends and family members brought cards, flowers and gifts to the joint 80th birthday party.
At one point, Olive asked her guest reporter, “You think you are going to find a story out of what we have told you?” Oh, yes. The two women still exchange letters, but not as frequently as before, spending the money they no longer waste exchanging gifts to talking by telephone. And although Barbara is e-mail savvy, Olive wants nothing to do with it. “The Internet is too complicated for me. I have enough trouble with a mobile phone,” confessed Olive, pronouncing the word “MOE-bile” in her best English accent. “And I don’t wish to know anything else.” A pen and paper will do just fine, love.

Your medication could be depleting nutrients COMMENTARY By Carol Rossetti, N.D. Prescription drugs can be depleting some or all of your vital nutrients. You can be eating the most nutritious meals but losing more than you can ingest. You could end up worse than before you started. Many doctors are urging their patients to take supplements in an effort to prevent other health problems from developing due to nutrient deficiencies. I am a proponent of a more integrative medical approach. There is a time for pharmaceuticals and a time for natural remedies. Sometimes the best thing for the patient is a combination of remedies. Doctors are trying to do their best, but unfortunately, nutrition, and vitamin and mineral therapies, including how any of these therapies interact, are not taught in medical schools. This is why I teach classes and seminars nationally for the medical community on the interactions of pharmaceuticals, vitamins, minerals and herbals. Drugs used for high blood pressure may deplete the body of folic acid and zinc. Folic acid is necessary for proper iron utilized. Low
concentrations of folic acid cause serious birth defects. Cholesterol-lowering drugs deplete the body of CoEnzyme Q10, a vital nutrient that protects the integrity of the heart. You must replace it! Acid-reducing drugs stop the ability of the stomach to properly digest foods, leading to bacteria- producing ulcers and starvation. The skin takes on a gray tone, hair becomes brittle and falls out, teeth become loose, cholesterol goes up, and the list goes on. We don’t want to reduce acid. We want to increase enzymes so the food is digested and various symptoms go away. Melatonin can be depleted and without it, you may have trouble going to sleep or staying asleep. My best advice is read the prescription package inserts. If the insert does not have the information, ask the pharmacist to get it for you. Be your best advocate. We’re all like a school of fish COMMENTARY By David Cain At age two, my oldest daughter wouldn’t wear a bike helmet. It was cruel punishment for a father who just wanted to take his daughter for a relaxing bike ride. Her will to resist the helmet was like trying to bring two repelling magnets together. Like trying to move an entrenched mule. Like trying to win an argument with my wife: It was impossible. My veiled threats fell on deaf ears. Helmet on, helmet thrown to the ground in a fit of rage, and repeat. Finally, I resolved that there would be no bike riding at this house. She wouldn’t wear the helmet under any circumstance. Fast forward two more years and we find a house where bike helmets are commonplace. They aren’t reserved for just bike rides; they are part of everyday attire. At four years old, a bike helmet adorned with Tinker Bell is a part of the accepted dress code. It’s the same helmet as before, only sized a little larger to fit a bigger head with more hair. And, at the same age as the resistance started two years earlier, the second little girl willingly accepts the helmet. She plops it on her head and runs to the mirror to see how stylish she looks with that hard plastic thing on her head. What changed in the two years?
Human beings want social validation. They crave acceptance like a nicotine addiction. We all want to fit in with our peers despite what we might say or believe. Everyone would rather fit in and be accepted. Every person might have a different group they are trying to fit in with, but fitting in and being socially validated is important to all of us. Whether you play in the band or the football team, you have a group whose opinion and social validation you desire. My oldest daughter’s change in opinion is a byproduct of what she sees from her friends. They all wear helmets, so she now wears a helmet – it’s a part of fitting in. Her younger sister, at the same age when she threw fits about head safety, wears the helmet willingly because her sister does it. We all want to fit in. People have the independent thinking of a school of fish – a good lesson to remember in your business and family. Make sure your group (or audience) feels like buying from you is socially acceptable – everyone’s doing it. David Cain works at MediaSauce, a digital media and online marketing company in Carmel. The cost of living is what brought Filiberto Juarez to Indiana from New Jersey, and now he hopes to make that move count by making a living as the owner of his first restaurant in Noblesville. Juarez, who has 15 years experience in the food business, moved to Indianapolis five years ago and was a chef for Mitchell’s Fishmarket at Clay Terrace in Carmel. He and his brothers, Hilario and Irinco Juarez – thus, the name Brothers – liked the location in the former Tuscano’s Subs space near the intersection of Little Chicago Road and State Road 32. “My goal is to make this a chain,” said Filiberto. Everything is made from scratch at Brothers, including their chicken noodle and cream of chicken soups, chicken salad, stuffing and corn bread. The specialty corn bread accompanies the roasted chicken, baby back ribs and family meals of chicken, ribs, chicken and ribs and turkey and platters – or you can buy it individual (40 cents) or by the dozen ($4.29). The roasted chicken and turkey are also used in sandwiches, pitas, tacos and wraps, plus can be added to any of four salads. Kids might prefer chicken tenders or drumsticks, macaroni and cheese and french fries. Owner: Filiberto Juarez 5643 Pebble Village Lane, Noblesville Phone: (317) 867-1241. Ursina Lardi as The Baroness in “The White Ribbon.”
COMMENTARY By Chris Lloyd “The White Ribbon” makes for an interesting exercise in discriminating between American and European films. This highly stylized German drama was a top prize winner at Cannes, and an Oscar nominee for best foreign language film. It received good write-ups from most American critics, but wasn’t much of a hit here, even by art house standards. I consider myself pretty egalitarian in my cinematic tastes, but I admit I found this movie dense and off-putting. It seems to revel in its own mysteriousness, in confounding and misdirecting its audience, rather than taking them someplace. Set in a tiny pastoral German town before World War I, “Ribbon” opens with the local doctor being seriously injured in a horse riding
accident when someone strings a wire across his garden. As the folk grow more angry and fearful, more attacks occur with increasing violence. The baron’s son is kidnapped and whipped, and for awhile the unrest appears to be rooted in resentment between the classes. But answers never come with any sort of clarity. Visually it’s a dazzling film, shot in austere black-and-white by writer/director Michael Haneke. But if American films are often formulaic and predictable, “The White Ribbon” is just too ... foreign. Grade: C-plus

Nigella + Grandma recipes = classic chocolate cake COMMENTARY By Molly Herner Chocolate cake is a timeless classic and, if done right, the most memorable end to a great meal. As with all baking and pastry, measurements and ingredients are all very important. I have struggled long and hard to find the perfect chocolate cake recipe. This one comes pretty close. It is a combination of recipes from my
two favorite bakers: Nigella Lawson and my Grandmother Hill. Layer this cake with your favorite chocolate icing for a decadent chocolate lovers dream. Molly Herner, is the baker/pastry chef at Matteo’s Ristorante Italiano. You may email her at odette05@ aol.com.

Locally owned and operated by Lee Tyler and Mary Pat Young since 1997, this wonderful Italian restaurant has garnered more than its share of praise, including a Business Excellence Award from WIBC Radio, and a Best Ethnic Restaurant Award from a local magazine. The menu is a little on the pricey side, but the food is well worth any extra expense. Most pasta and secondi dishes range from $15 to $21, while antipasti and salad selections are $4 to $11.50. The restaurant specializes in Northern Italian cuisine, and the menu offers a range of dishes from traditional favorites like Lasagna Classica to Rosticciana, a roasted pork loin stuffed with Italian sausage, mushrooms and pancetta, served in a rosemary demiglace. Mangia’s has a full bar, and an extensive wine list, including 16 wines sold by the glass.

2. Measure exactly the flour, baking powder and baking soda and add just a pinch of salt in one bowl. 3. In another bowl, cream together the butter and sugar, and then add cocoa and ricotta cheese slowly. 4. Add the eggs one at a time until thoroughly combined. Add in the vanilla at this point. 5. Sift the dry ingredients into the wet in three additions. When batter is well-mixed pour a 1/2 cup of hot, strong brewed coffee slowly into the mix. 6. Pour into prepared tins and bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Line your tins with parchment paper, so the cake doesn’t stick.

Hey, what’s on your bucket list? Commentary By Darla Kinney Scoles Wouldn’t it be fun to know what your greatgreat-grandfather had on his “bucket list?” What things did he want to do before he died? And why? Did he get to do any of them? How would a bucket list back then compare to one written today? When helping people compile their life stories, writing a bucket list is one of the “warm-up exercises” I ask them to do. It’s one I recently added while pondering an item on my own bucket list. You see – here comes the shameless plea – I have something on my list that surprises even my closest family members. I can hear it now: “Grandma always wanted to do WHAT???” I want to ride on one of those gi-normous farm tractors for a day. It could be plowing, harvesting or anything in between, I don’t care – just as long as it is huge, high off the ground, and kicking up a dust cloud that makes those on a distant road wonder what is going on over there. Was this on my list five years ago? Nope. That’s the beautiful thing about bucket lists. They can be ever-changing and yet still perfectly viable. In fact, they probably should be reviewed and updated regularly. Some may argue that a bucket list left unfinished isn’t really part of someone’s story, but I

disagree. We are as much those things we desired to do but did not, as we are the things we managed to accomplish. Start a bucket list today and see if you don’t agree. And – shameless plea, again – if you know someone with a big ol’ tractor, give me a shout. Darla Kinney Scoles is a freelance journalist living in Noblesville. Museum trip reminds this believer of those misguided Commentary By Janna Lynas For those who remember my dilemma a few weeks ago, my family made it to the Field Museum, but not the Cubbies game. I’m considering it a lesson in patience. Climbing the front entrance steps, full of anticipation for what we would see on the other side, we weren’t disappointed as T-Rex Sue awaited us in the great hall. We felt as if we were in “Night at the Museum" alongside Larry Daily, my kids ripping off lines from the movie they’ve seen dozens of times. Meandering through the museum, we saw exhibits from around the world. My kids loved the animals; I loved the culture. I’ve always been drawn to the richness and beauty of distant lands and the people who live there. But as I left several of the exhibits, I felt sadness for these people from so far away. Whether Buddhists, Muslim or worshippers of multiple gods, many have been misled into believing men who have given themselves too much credit or assumed power over themselves and others, believing
they, too, are gods and are worshipped as such. I have tremendous respect for these people and their culture, but feel sorrow for that in which they’ve placed their trust. I am thankful to know the truth of the one who created me. He is a loving Father and the one who deserves all my praise. And as the creator of all people He, “wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” (2 Timothy 2:4). So, as I love and honor my God, I also respect those with beliefs unlike my own without ignoring my responsibility to share the truth of Jesus. Missionaries who go to foreign lands live this out daily, but why should my life be any different? There are those close to me who don’t yet know and haven’t yet heard. I have a responsibility to them, too. Janna Lynas is a stay-at-home mom living in Noblesville with her minister husband Derek and three children. You may contact her at faith@ currentnoblesville.com.

Cicadas: Beware of the wasp COMMENTARY By Holly Funk While I am normally touted as an insect advocate, no single thing grosses me out quite like a cicada. Except maybe a cockroach. The sheer size of the cicada is probably the greatest influence of my dislike for the boisterous insect – so noisy, in fact, the male cicada is the loudest insect in the world. They are huge and black and have red eyes – not to mention the icky, brown exoskeletons they leave hanging around everywhere. What little boy hasn’t stuck one of those on a girl’s shirt, sending her shrieking? I know that wasn’t just me. Still, cicadas are an interesting lot. The immature cicada lives for many years in the soil at the base of trees and emerges to climb up the trunk and shed their crunchy, beige shell. The adults, then, camp out in trees and talk back and forth to each other until they find a mate (you know the rest). While that totally gives me the willies, someone else might flip over a bee, or wasp, and that just doesn’t really faze me. Not even one of the biggest wasps of all, the cicada killer wasp, (that’s right!) because it hunts down cicadas and makes baby food of them. Awesome. The cicada killer wasp is one scary looking
bug. At almost 2 inches long, it burrows in the ground to nest. Sandy areas are preferable, so garden beds with exposed soil and open areas are where you see them most. The male wasp will dive bomb and buzz you in defense but it is all buzz and no bite, as he has no stinger (typical). The female has the ability to sting but will only do so if trapped in a T-shirt or threatened seriously. She’s busy hunting down cicadas. Once she’s got her prey, she brings it to the nest and lays her eggs in it. When the babies hatch they devour the cicada for their first meal. Now, that’s a plan. The cicada killer, as with other bees and wasps, is deemed beneficial as they help to keep balance in the insect world, so, they rarely require control measures. I think it is so cool the way nature takes care of itself – and us. I don’t want to be overrun by cicada swarms. And while it can be quite alarming to cross paths with one of these wasps, especially if you happen to catch one carrying the cicada, it is actually just trying to care for its family. And I think we can all relate to that. Holly Funk is an Indiana accredited horticulturist and advanced master gardener residing in Noblesville.
