Members of the Rebels helped raise money for cancer research in last year's Relay for Life.

These young Rebels have several causes

By Pete Semple Current in Noblesville Baseball means so many things. It means fun. It means hot dogs and cold drinks. It means exercise to work off the calories from the hot dogs and cold drinks. For many people, baseball is synonymous with summer. But for the Noblesville Rebels, baseball means something most people wouldn’t expect. “We believe that community service is important for several reasons,” says team president Dave Owens. “Among these are to remind our boys that there are much bigger things than sports; to help them to see their parents and coaches making service a priority; to give back to the community that supports them and whose name they wear on their jerseys; and to help them grow and develop, not just as baseball players, but as young men.” Since the team’s inception last year, the Rebels have served their community in three major projects. They started with the Relay for Life last year in Forest Park, helping to raise more than $60,000 for cancer research. Next, last summer they worked with Habitat for Humanity to build three houses. Finally, last winter, they contributed about 200 canned items for the White River Christian Church food pantry. “It contributes greatly to team-

building,” says Owens, whose team opens tournament play at the Field of Dreams this week. “They feel that they’re doing something more important than just trying to win a baseball game. Working and sacrificing time and energy alongside a teammate for something that helps others is a great bonding experience.” These lessons aren’t lost on the Rebels. Not only do the boys understand the value of community service, they also seem to enjoy it. “The Relay for Life was really fun, and it helped raise money for cancer,” says player Brett Bell. “It feels like such a little thing, but it can help so many people.” Teammate Drew Owens agrees. “It makes you feel better if you help. You never know how much people will need it.” The Rebels will continue to serve the community in and out of baseball season. "I think it’s probably something that a lot of teams forget about, but for us it’ll continue to be a priority as we go,” says coach Owens. “We don’t just want to build better athletes; we want to build better people.” That strategy seems to be working. “It’s not that hard,” says Zach Welker. “All you have to do is get up and do what you think is right.”

“We don’t just want to build better athletes; we want to build better people.”

OUR VIEWS

It is our position that charter schools may be the answer to school reform. Recently, Newsweek magazine printed its rankings of America’s Best High Schools. Fifteen hundred schools were ranked on “how hard schools staffs worked to challenge students with advanced- placement college-level courses and tests.” Two schools from Indiana ranked in the top fifty. Both were charter schools – the Signature School in Evansville (#7) and Herron School (#26). Zionsville and Carmel High Schools ranked #574 and #696 respectively. As Americans, we are blessed that our country values and provides a free education for its citizens. How do we deliver that education? Public school education is held prisoner by politicians and unions. Charter schools provide a bright shining light out of darkness. Charter schools allow more innovation, freedom from restriction, individualized instruction, self paced learning, focus on the arts and sciences, emphasis on expressive styles of learning – in a nutshell, a ripe environment for learning. More importantly, charter schools level the playing field between the have and the have nots.

Import/export

It is our position that our federal government should focus on root causes and not at individual states working to apply existing statutes in an attempt to address the chronic problem of illegal and undocumented aliens. Accusation of racism and calls for boycott follow any efforts to discuss or manage the growing problem. Yet few can disregard the human rights violations that follow the trail of under-the-table immigration “enterprises” around the world promising the Golden Ticket to the bounty of the United States. Isn’t there something that our burgeoning federal apparatus can do to ameliorate the issue? Can’t we find ways to significantly reduce the incentives for existing Americans to avoid work – at least in the traditional sense? Doesn’t much of the powerful vacuum in the U.S. labor pool derive its power from the fact that there are so many of us unwilling to fill jobs that require intense physical labor? And as long as the jobs are unfilled, won’t there continue to be a significant demand for undocumented aliens without regard to polite programs to stem the tide? Welfare, disability and extended unemployment must be part of the immigration discussion.

From the backshop Note to teachers: Look at private sector Here’s a shocker: As we were going to press for this edition of Noblesville’s Best Weekly Newspaper™, the Noblesville Teachers Forum was making its initial public disclosure on where contract negotiations stood – and money was purported to be a potential sticking point. Gee, really? Supt. Libbie Conner’s office previously said the two sides are miles apart in settling the agreement for approximately 400 teachers and staff. In May, voters approved a $6 million, seven-year referendum (on the second attempt at getting it passed); that measure and the contract negotiations largely are unrelated, because that cash will not become available until the 2011-2012 academic year. Our position is there’s only so much money to go around, and, as is the case in the public sector, the teachers should realize that some of something is far better than none of nothing. It is reality, and the schools should take a hard line and make the teachers understand that they HAVE jobs, when many others do not. ••• We were happy to learn that a Morse Reservoir pedestrian bridge project was to begin today – with completion targeted for

c o o l

Brian Kelly & Steve Greenberg just before Thanksgiving, weather permitting. The span will be on the south side of Carrigan Road . Federal stimulus dough pays for it and a trail from Edgewater Drive to Clarendon Drive . Perfect! Trails connect community segments like nothing else. We’ve seen it happen in Carmel – taking a literal linear junkyard and turning it into the heavily trafficked Monon Trail - and we’re seeing the initial benefits in Westfield with the extension of the Monon and the creation of the Midland . We’re big believers. Trails are proven magnets when cities attempt to land new business. They’re amenities that many now seek. To be able to provide them to the community – and future residents – is a wonderful thing.

With talks at an impasse, teachers finally speak up COMMENTARY By Zach Dunkin For months nearly 400 Noblesville school teachers kept their silence as they read one-sided reporting on contract negotiations between the teachers union and the administration of Noblesville Schools and heard public accusations of them being greedy and insensitive. But as long as the negotiation process held promise for a common ground settlement, the Noblesville Teachers Forum took “the high road,” as its president Dusky Landry said, and refused to discuss the issues while talks continued. Until now. With negotiations at an official impasse and because of what Landry heard could be a statement coming from the administration “that would be detrimental to the teachers and the forum,” Landry and a handful of members of the negotiations team held court with members of the media recently at Hazel Dell Elementary school to tell their side of the story. And their message was simple: we are not greedy and we were willing to give up enough to save what we thought would be 34 teaching positions. It’s still not enough. Now they’re in danger of not saving any because of one issue: the salary incremental freeze. Teachers were willing to accept no raise on

their base salary for the fourth consecutive year, but the salary incremental raise, an experiencebased salary bump some teachers have been working years for, was too much to sacrifice. That could mean as much as $4,000 or $5,000 next year for some teachers. “We’d read, ‘If the Forum would do this or do that, this many jobs or that many jobs would be saved,’ “said Landry, a third-grade teacher at Hazel Dell elected last March to represent the teachers. ”Well, we haven’t voted on anything but we have agreed to all that but the freeze and (Superintendent Libby) Dr. Connor tells us only 19 jobs, at most, could be saved, even though their own data indicated a minimum of 34 teachers could be recalled. “We’ve tried to take the high road and remain optimistic, but now it’s time to let everyone know we were willing to sacrifice a lot.” For a detailed look at what the teachers were willing to give up, see the online version of this story at www.currentnoblesville.com. Like hitting oil, commentary about spill strikes a nerve with readers Commentary By Krista Bocko Last week’s column on the oil spill, and my premise that the reason for my feelings of guilt and the pollution is our greed, touched a nerve with readers. I wanted to respond to just a couple of comments which I have taken the liberty of paraphrasing – with the approval of my editor – because of space reasons: Comment No. 1: “We aren’t greedy when we take advantage of the things provided to us by way of the oil companies. It’s not BP’s fault they’re drilling one mile underwater. All fault lies with the environmentalists and politicians of both sides. Want to blame someone? Blame them.” I agree with part of this. The professional environmentalists and the politicians are, on the whole, corrupt. Yes, they’ve made a mess of things! But to say that consumers are not greedy, that it’s not the big oil companies fault? That all fault lies squarely with the politicians and environmentalists? Who made BP mount their money making machine without safety backups? Oil companies are corrupt and greedy, too. Had they simultaneously drilled a relief well, this disaster could have been avoided. Why didn’t they? And why are they so desperate to drill for oil? Because of the consumer demand for it. Finger pointing aside, this is a wakeup call. A wakeup call that this trajectory we’re on is devastating and can’t continue. That “plastic makes it possible” only goes so far when you can see and

feel the destruction deep inside and you ache for people to wake up and see that “life as usual” isn’t working out so well. When you can’t imagine the world for your children when they grow up. When the marshes will be contaminated to the seventh generation and beyond, all so we can have our “stuff” (and lots of it). Comment No. 2: “The ocean is the biggest washing machine there is and breaks down everything sooner or later.” I ask, if you would want to walk on your favorite beach that is weeping with oil and strewn with plastic debris and dead wildlife? It doesn’t matter how “natural” oil is, I doubt that any of us will live to see this devastation cleaned up. Here’s what I say about all of this: outrage is good. And if you’re not outraged, I wonder about your survival instincts. Go do what you can. Conserve. Raise your thermostat temperature in summer. Buy less (and refuse plastic bags), drive less. Buy gas at Countrymark on South 10th Street; it’s drilled in the Midwest and refined here in Indiana.

3 amigos: Hubby, the grill and the Farmers Market Commentary By Leslie Webber My husband isn’t much help in the kitchen. I’m fairly certain he doesn’t know how to turn on an oven. He only helps with the dishes when we have company, which leaves guests with the impression that I am one of the lucky ones. To be fair, I couldn’t start a lawn mower if my life depended on it, and I would never trust myself with a set of hedge trimmers. Outdoor cooking is an entirely different story. If something can be grilled my husband will grill it, and I will happily eat anything I didn’t have to cook. His love of grilling borders on obsession, proven by the iPhone apps from which he draws weekend inspiration. Not that I’m poking fun, because I know better than to bite the hand that feeds us. The interest in summer cooking carries over to meal planning and shopping, which thrills me to no end. My husband especially loves to hit the Farmers Market in search of meat, produce and

herbs. I love it because we’re all up, dressed, and out of the house early, lest we miss out on our bushel of fresh-picked My Dad’s Sweet Corn. I will admit I would love to see the Noblesville Farmers Market in our picturesque downtown. I am sure it is held in its current location for a reason. I can only imagine jockeying for a parking space on a busy Saturday morning, but the overflow parking lot of Riverview lacks a bit of the charm a Farmers Market on the Square could offer. I’m not about to complain because delicious, fresh, local produce and someone who is willing to cook it, seems like a really great problem to have! Leslie Webber is a Noblesville resident, wife, mother of two very young children and a professional photographer. Visit her Web site at www.lesliewebber.com.

How do you spell busy? H-H-H-H

Commentary By Hannah Davis There’s something inherently, relaxingly bucolic about summer – maybe it’s the trips to the pool, or the lighting bugs, or the fireworks – but for some kids, summer’s busier than the school year. For the last 10 years, I’ve been one of those kids. Why? I’m a 4-Her. Yes, I’m technically on vacation this week. While you read this, I’m lounging around a cottage on the coast of Maine. But I guarantee I’m knitting, compiling recipes to use in a grill-off, or filling out paperwork. There are projects to complete and deadlines to meet. I must multi-task, and if I don’t, then the 2010 Hamilton County 4-H Fair (my 10th and final of my career in the organization) will be a complete and utter disaster. It’s safe to say that I’ll have to pull at least one all-nighter amidst my balls of furry green yarn and cable needles, because as I write this, I’m only half done with my blanket. I have it easy this year, though; last time I attempted to partake in the foods project, I stayed up ‘til 4 a.m. baking loaves of impossibly malformed bread.

Hannah’s Unofficial Top 5 Most Popular Projects in Hamilton County 4-H 1. Arts and crafts 2. Foods 3. Photography 4. Dog agility and obedience 5. Sewing.

I mustn’t complain, though. I’ve been Grand Champion Junior Poultry Showman at the Indiana State Fair, president of my club, and a proud wannabe farm girl. It’s been a good run.

Hannah Davis is recent graduate of Noblesville High School. She will be attending Indiana University in the fall.

By Casey Kenley Current in Noblesville Although the Hamilton County 4-H Fair officially gets underway with the crowning of the fair queen Friday night, Bill Rice won’t be eyeing the young contestants as they model their formal wear and answer the judges’ questions. He’s looking ahead more to July 15, when the rest of the fair unfolds for five days on the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. “If it’s nice on opening day, Thursday, and you walk out and you can’t move, you know it’s a good day,” says Rice, who gets a great view from his office at the Hamilton County Purdue Extension abutting the fairgrounds. Although specific attendance numbers aren’t tallied, Rice reports that the estimated number attending the free event is 20,000-25,000 people annually. Rice is one of three educators on staff at the Purdue Extension office. Purdue University graduate Kathleen Koch is another, and even though her position as 4-H Youth Development Educator keeps her busy all year, she is particularly energized this month, as she has been gearing up for the fair. A small sampling of events include the pygmy goat show, dog agility, clogging exhibition, horse and pony Western show, llama limbo and leaping llama exhibition, antique tractor pull, swine show, farmer Olympics and rocket launch. Beef, sheep, pork, rabbit and poultry producers will host barbecues. The Extension Homemakers will feature special dishes daily: spaghetti, chicken and noodles, meatloaf, Swiss steak, and ham and beans. All of these activities take an active 4-H membership and army of volunteers. In Hamilton County alone, there are 1,900 kids involved in 4-H and more than 300 volunteers. As the county has changed, the 4-H program has responded to include new areas of interest. It is involved in health and fitness,

4-H Youth Development Educator Kathleen Koch works with some of the 1,900 Hamilton County 4-H youths. and collaborative programs such as one with Options Charter School in Noblesville. “The end result is education,” says Koch, “not to get a project in the State Fair.” The mission of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service is to educate Indiana citizens to develop youth and strengthen agriculture, families and communities. One of the biggest strategies to start developing that knowledge is through kids and 4-H. Part of 4-H’s official history, in 1904, John F. Haines introduced corn clubs and corn-growing contests in Hamilton County. That grassroots initiative has grown to include more than 60 projects, from aerospace and veterinary science to photography and crafts. About 80 percent of today’s 4-H projects involve activities that do not include livestock. In order for the Hamilton County’s three Extension Educators, Koch, Rice and County Extension Director and Consumer Family Sciences Extension Educator Susan Peterson, to further citizens’ education, they must continue their own. Through distance education technology and contact with Extension Specialists who provide research-based information from

their posts on the Purdue University campus, Extension Educators across the state receive monthly and quarterly updates. Subjects of interest shift quickly, Rice says. Over the years, the population increase in the county’s urban areas has led to a decrease in the production of livestock such as hogs, cattle and sheep, and horticulture issues have emerged as being more prevalent than agriculture-based ones. Among those involved in agriculture, interests in ethanol production and wind energy as alternatives to petroleum-based production have arisen. “When many people think of 4-H, they think of farm kids,” Koch says, but that’s a shortsighted assumption. This year’s Hamilton County 4-H Fair and the ongoing work of Purdue Extension have plenty to teach all of us.

Who ya gonna call? These guys The Hamilton County Extension Educators are more than willing to share knowledge and research developed by Purdue University and other research institutions. In fact, it’s part of their job. For example, if you have a sick tree in your yard and are unsure what to do about it, Rice will make a house call. Say you’re a small-scale farmer whose thumb is as green as it can get, but your marketing skills could use some help selling those vegetables. The Purdue Extension has a class for that. Or you’ve recently become an empty nester and finally have a little more time for yourself. How about volunteering with 4-H or enrolling in the popular Master Gardener program? Get to know (and understand) your sugars COMMENTARY By Laura Marenco OK, we all know too much refined white sugar in our diets is not a good thing. We get fat, sluggish (eventually) and put ourselves at risk of developing Type II Diabetes. Understanding sugars, though, can help us stave off the potential ills. There are two reigning varieties of sugar that should command our attention: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic sugars are those that occur naturally in fruits and vegetables; they are so named because they reside within the cell structures themselves. We do not need to cut back on these sugars if we want to lose weight or get healthy. Extrinsic sugars are those not contained within the cell structures of natural foods. Instead they themselves fall into two main groups. These are: • Milk extrinsic sugars: These occur naturally in milk products. • Non-milk extrinsic sugars (NME): These are added to foods. We need to avoid the NME sugars. Their main purpose is to sweeten food products, but NMEs also increase bulk and/or preserve the food products. NME sugars contain no useful nutrients for the body, so are metabolized and stored as fat. When our diet is high in NME sugars, the

body doesn’t use its stored fat, and it just keeps piling on. Further, our blood-sugar levels rise and fall sharply (the “buzz” and the “crash”) when we ingest too great a volume of NME sugars. This puts a terrible strain on the pancreas, which constantly is forced to create and release insulin to moderate blood-sugar levels. Eventually, the strain becomes too much, and the blood-sugar levels no longer can be effectively regulated. This leads to the onset of Type II Diabetes and its associated health problems, some of which can become debilitating. If we want to use up the stored fat in our bodies, ingesting naturally occurring sugars is the best way to achieve that. Be a label reader, and get healthier and wiser. Herbs, vitamins, certain veggies can keep your eyes on the ball COMMENTARY By Carol Rossetti, N.D. Growing older does not mean deteriorating eyesight, especially loss of night vision. The herb bilberry helps your eyes by fighting free-radical damage, and it supports the blood vessels of your eyes. Bilberry helps night vision by increasing the regeneration of rhodopsin, the purple pigment found in the rods of the retina. These rods are responsible for helping the eye adapt to light and dark. The body converts NAC (N-Acetylcysteine), a powerful peptide, to glutathione. This peptide serves as a powerful antioxidant throughout your body including your eyes. Your eyes need a good supply of glutathione to promote good eye health. Glutathione high equals healthy eyes. Cruciferous vegetables are the loaded with glutathione. Choose kale, spinach and broccoli. Lutein and zeaxanthin are potent carotenoids and act like nature’s sunglasses by filtering ultraviolet rays. They also protect lens density and help support the macula. This is especially helpful in fighting macular degeneration prevalent inn Type II diabetes. Lycopene is a potent scavenger of oxygen free radicals. Vitamin E is found in the retina and

10 | July 6, 2010

the cortical (outer) layer of the eye lens. Vitamin C is small and water soluble and can penetrate the layers of the lens and protect against free radical damage. Bioflavanoids are water soluble plant pigments including hesperidin, rutin, and quercetin. They help strengthen blood vessels. Zinc is found in the retina of the eye in higher concentrations than any other part of the body. These are all powerful nutrients for the health of your eyes and since you only have two. Do what you can to take good care of them. Especially for Type II diabetics, I highly recommend a good Omega 3, Lutein and Perfect Eyes to combat dry eyes, protect against damage, and to reverse eyesight damaged by a multitude of ills. Start with a good multi-vitamin and mineral. Perfect Eyes formula contains many of the things I mentioned. Add an Omega 3 and Lutein and you are well on your way to improved vision.

MONEY MATTERS What do you save up money for?

The mind is a broken mirror COMMENTARY By David Cain One thing I’ve noticed about aging is that your mind let’s you believe you aren’t growing older. It’s the physical condition of your body that does most of the nagging. Mentally, I’m almost surprised sometimes by that guy staring back at me in the mirror. Where did his hair go? Why does he look like he’s been staring directly at the sun and squinting for 40 years? Despite this older chaps prodding, in my own head I still feel like I’m 25 – for now anyway. I have the same mentality and can actually feel and believe I’m younger than I am. The mirror foils my plan and reminds me I’m nearly 20 years older than I think I am. Even so, sometimes I believe the mirror is broken. It’s common for people to have a perception of themselves – their appearance, their business, their personality or their success – that isn’t necessarily reality. We always think the best of what we do and generally think the best of ourselves. I never blame myself; instead I provide a comfy excuse that justifies everything I do that could be considered wrong. Sound familiar? Everyone at some point has had an inflated opinion about themselves, their ideas and their efforts and draws conclusions that are self-promoting. However, reality often paints a different picture of this perception. There’s a lesson in all this self-absorption; it’s

that we are instinctually wired to be self-centered. It’s how human beings survived all these years. You have to look out for yourself. You have to take care of No. 1 first. You have to put on your air mask first before helping others with theirs. It’s a survival mechanism. And it’s one you can capitalize on in business. Make everything you do about your customer and their pains, problems, and needs to survive. Never blame them and never make it about you. People always want to believe the best. Remember, if you tell them they look 25 years old, they’ll probably believe you. David Cain works at MediaSauce, a digital media and online marketing company in Carmel. A Single Man R, 99 minutes

COMMENTARY By Chris Lloyd Great directors are made, not born. But every now and then someone takes up the chair late in life, and proves a natural. Tom Ford is one of those. Nearly 50, he is best known as a fashion designer, for Gucci and then his own line. Before he directed «A Single Man,» Ford was probably best known for a photo shoot for the cover of «Vanity Fair» of a nude Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley. An affinity for design is rarely limited to a single discipline, and Ford proves an adept novice at filling the cinematic frame with lush details, and photographing stars Colin Firth and Julianne Moore with Golden Age Hollywood glamour. Firth deserving earned an Oscar nomination for his riveting performance as George, a closeted English professor in early 1960s California.

Shattered at the loss of Jim (Matthew Goode), his partner of 16 years, George has decided to commit suicide. The film follows him in the course of his last day, at the end of which he intends to blow his brains out. Julianne Moore plays Charley, a fellow British expatriate and onetime lover, with whom George enjoys a sumptuous last meal. Charley offhandedly dismisses George›s love for Jim as illegitimate, and we sense that the two old friends share affection but not understanding. A Single Man» is a bitter, but delicious cinematic dish. Grade: B-plus

Bartender, Syd’s Bar and Grill Where do you like to eat: “Logan’s Roadhouse” What do you like to eat there: “I like a steak, baked potato and a salad.” Why do you like Logan’s Roadhouse: “The atmosphere.”

Whipped cream: 1. Whip together the egg and sugar until fluffy. 2. Add cream into the mixer and whip the cream until it starts to thicken. 3. Add a splash of vanilla and continue to whip the cream until it forms stiff peaks. Fruit salad: 1. Chop or dice whatever kind of berry or fruit is in season. I like to use strawberries, raspberries and cherries. 2. Pour your favorite liqueur over the fruit. I suggest Grand Marnier or Limoncello. 3. Let the fruit salad sit for a few hours or overnight so it is infused well. To layer the cake: 1. When the cakes are cooled, slice them through the middle and soak each cake layer with the juices from the fruit salad. 2. Pile the fruit on top of each layer and then spread the whipped cream over the fruit. 3. Continue to layer the cake, fruit and cream in this way and adorn the cake with fruit and whipped cream on top.

The atmosphere alone is worth a trip, but the food is delicious as well. The menu features variety of appetizers, entrees, soups, and salads, all of which are reasonably priced. Try the fishn-chips if you’re in the mood for traditional pub fare. When family history could save a life

Commentary By Darla Kinney Scoles There are as many reasons to search out ancestors as there are descendants. One reason that recently came to my attention is genealogy for medical records. For those who are adopted, or simply clueless as to the medical history beyond their parents, searching for medical information is a worthwhile, targeted and unique type of family history work. An Internet search reveals many articles and sites devoted to such endeavors, but as with all genealogy pursuits, the best place to start is with relatives who are still alive. It may be that your dad knows how Great Aunt Gina died or what types of cancers run in the family, but may not have felt the need to share that information over Thanksgiving dinner. Ask him – and anyone else who will talk – about the maladies which most often beset predecessors. Diseases and conditions such as heart disease, cancer and high blood pressure -- if found to be prevalent among ancestors -- need to be given special attention in the living. Sometimes symptom-less and yet life-threatening, these situations require regular testing and monitoring if a family history indicates it as necessary.

Once family interviews have been conducted, records to turn to include death certificates, cemetery, funeral home and hospital records, and local newspaper articles. Military records, family bibles, social security and pension documents can also be helpful. This type of searching can be more involved and, at times, requires a magic decoder ring to figure out what old medical terminology such as decrepitude, jail fever and strangery means in current hospital-speak. Suffice it to say, medical language has changed as much as common vernacular over the centuries. What hasn’t changed is the fact that generations are linked by disease as much as that much-more-obvious hook nose from the Hullebarger clan. Knowing the medical details of one’s family past can save a life in the now. Darla Kinney Scoles is a freelance journalist living in Noblesville. Favorite perennial? Give me the happy-go-lucky geranium COMMENTARY By Holly Funk I’m frequently asked about my favorite perennial and I find myself torn like I’ve been asked to choose a favorite child. The question is a sticky one, but I do have a favorite. I am absolutely mad for perennial geranium. Each and every geranium is equally wonderful to me. I’ve loved them as long as I can remember having planted a variety of them at every opportunity on almost every property I’ve gardened. I never grow tired of including them in my garden designs, and they never fail to perform, in shade or the sun. This geranium is not your mom’s red geranium, complete with trailing vinca and a spike in a pot on the porch. That annual geranium actually belongs to the genus Pelargonium; why it is dubbed geranium, I’ve not a clue. Perennial geranium has very little in common with the annual and, in fact, there isn’t a red one to be found. Regardless, in shades of blue, violet, pink and white, this perennial is the perfect plant for any gardener, requiring no special care without overstaying its welcome.

www.youarecurrent.com

I love geraniums especially because of their extended period of flowering. Rozanne is said to flower even longer than most – rivaling the showiest of annuals. It’s a low-growing perennial with handsome, finely cut foliage that could carry it even without the blooms; it flowers relentlessly, flowering early in the season until the fall. With very little attention, this plant is a real show-stopper. A light trimming of last season’s foliage in the spring gets it growing until another light trimming between flushes of flowering. Fairing well in shade as well as sun, it makes an effective groundcover, if that is the purpose you seek. The least bit of attention can make this happy-go-lucky plant even more content. And if you happen to forget, it won’t hold anything against you. Unlike your favorite child. Holly Funk is an Indiana accredited horticulturist and advanced master gardener residing in Noblesville. Email your gardening woes (or wisdom) to hollyfunk75@yahoo.com.
