The Hamilton County Democratic Central Committee held a fundraiser dinner July 21 featuring three candidates. POLITICS The event, called the 2018 Triple J Dinner, was at the American Legion in Carmel and featured candidates Joselyn Whitticker, John Aguilera and Jim Harper. Each candidate had a few minutes to present their platform. Whitticker, running for state auditor, said trust needs to be put back into government. “We are on fire because we bring something to the table,” she said. “You empower each other, and that empowerment comes because of who you are. I’m running because you know I’m the only African American you’re going to see on that ticket, and I’m the only female you’re going to see on that ticket.” Whitticker said everyone is important and deserves equal protection. “I think we need to be transparent,” she said. “We need to put the trust back in government. Right now, my democracy and your democracy is under attack.” Whitticker is a former Marion Common

Council president and spent a 35-year career in education as a teacher and principal. She owns an instructional curriculum consulting business. For more on Whitticker and her campaign, visit joselyn4indiana.com. Aguilera, who is running for state treasurer, said the local community will become better if quality Democrats are elected in November. “This is an opportunity I do not take lightly,” he said. “There hasn’t been a Democratic
treasurer elected in 39 years, and there hasn’t been a member of the Latino community ever elected.” Aguilera said he plans to invest in resources such as E911, which is support for wireless phone users who dial 911. “It expands the possibility of response in some of the most rural areas in the state,” he said. Aguilera formerly served as a state representative from East Chicago. For more on Aguilera’s campaign, visit John Aguilera for Indiana on Facebook. Harper was not present, so his deputy campaign manager Ali Brown presented on his behalf. Harper is running for secretary of state. “We are honest. We are going to tell you how we feel,” Brown said. “I can tell you right now, he’s mad. He’s mad that Connie Lawson, the current secretary of state, has not taken money from the federal government to secure our elections.” According to Brown’s presentation, Harper plans to end gerrymandering, increase voter accessibility, ensure election security and support small businesses if elected. A tradition of the Hamilton County 4-H Fair, the antique tractor pull, was held July 21 at the pull strip on the southeast FUNDRAISER edge of the fairgrounds in Noblesville. The host, the Central Indiana Antique Tractor & Engine Association, focused the event pull on Ella Whistler, the student survivor of the May 25 shooting at West Middle School, by naming the evening “Pulling for Ella.”
Whistler’s dad, Cory, who also emceed the event, is a longtime member of the nonprofit that works to preserve agricultural heritage in the area. Other members of the club worked the event, carrying buckets to collect money to benefit Whistler and her family. All proceeds from pull, including driver registration fees, also were donated. City maps out newest capital improvement plan through 2023 By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com Earlier this month, the City of Noblesville unveiled Noblesville NOW, a five-year capital improvement plan that identifies 10 major projects throughout the COVER STORY city. Focused primarily on improving connectivity, the new capital improvement plan focuses on trails, road improvements and housing. DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT (2018-19) At the top of the list is bringing more urban-style housing downtown. “We have envisioned some form of downtown living for a long time,” Mayor John Ditslear said. “We’re aware that both old and new, whether it’s empty nesters or single and/or young married folks, like downtown and urban living.” Ditslear said at least two developers are looking build in and around downtown. This type of housing could meet the city’s need for “middle housing,” as identified in a 2016 housing study. Middle housing is defined as multi-family structures, ranging from duplexes to townhomes and multiplexes. In addition to seeing additional housing, a parking garage is planned to meet the needs of those living in the added housing and for those visiting downtown. LOGAN PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE (2018-19) The long-discussed Logan Street Pedestrian Bridge will break ground this year. The project will widen the existing Logan Street bridge on its south side, giving pedestrians a safer and easier connection to the west side of White River and Federal Hill Commons. The path will extend over the river and serve as a viewing area. The bridge will cost approximately $3 million, with the county paying just more than half and the City of Noblesville contributing $1,222,750. MIDLAND TRACE TRAIL (2018-19) Construction of the third phase of the Midland Trace Trail also will begin this year. The first phase connected the trail in Westfield at Gray Road to Hazel Dell Road. The second phase extended the trail from Hazel Dell to Willowview Road, and the third phase will connect Willowview to Hague Road. The final phase, which does not yet have a timeline, will connect the trail from Hague to the Riverwalk downtown. POLICE HEADQUARTERS (2018-20) In his annual state of the city address last fall, Ditslear announced the city was looking to build a new police headquarters on the site of the former Firestone plant on Division Street between 15th and 18th streets. Although Ditslear would like to break ground on the project this year, the city is waiting on Firestone to complete final environmental testing on the site. Because of environmental concerns, an existing slab on the site will stay, and the headquarters will be built around it. Ditslear said the city is looking at several funding options but is likely to go with a BOT (build, operate, transfer),
The Logan Street Pedestrian Bridge project will begin this year. (File photo)
where the developer would construct the building and then lease it to the city. The current headquarters at 135 S. Ninth St., formerly the city’s post office, will still operate as the city’s public safety building. It houses city courts and is the headquarters for the Noblesville Fire Dept. When the police department moved into the current building, there were less than three dozen officers on staff. Today, there are approximately 80. OLIO ROAD (2019-20) Existing drainage issues are the driving force behind improvements on Olio Road from 141st Street to 146th. With new developments like BorgWarner, the city is adding its sewer services to the area and setting up sewer services for future development. The 2019-20 project also will widen the road in the area to four lanes and add a roundabout at 146th and Olio Road.
PLEASANT STREET (2019-23) The city has long discussed improving, widening and extending Pleasant Street, but this project would deal primarily with intersection improvements. “It will probably be roundabouts, but it will be kind of piecemealed,” Ditslear said. The first roundabout will break ground this fall at 19th and Pleasant streets. The Metropolitan Planning Organization and city have secured funding for the roundabout. LIGHTS ON 146TH (2019) An energy-efficiency project, the city will replace streetlights and poles along 146th Street from Ind. 37 to I-69. ROUNDABOUTS (2021) Various roundabout projects will be completed in 2021, but the most notable one is at Logan and Nixon streets adjacent to Federal Hill Commons, which experiences congested traffic during parks events, specifically the farmers market each weekend, in addition to traffic from Kroger. “Also, the Lakeview and Logan (intersection) gets bottled up, so we’re hoping that will smooth that out a little bit,” Ditslear said. 10TH STREET TRAIL (2022) A trail on South 10th Street would provide neighborhoods and subdivisions another access to the city center. Currently, there is no walkability or pedestrian connectivity from neighborhoods like the Wellingtons. The proposed trail would connect to the subdivision entrances. Coupled with the trail will be significant drainage improvements. Heavy rains often close part of the road during flooding. LITTLE CHICAGO PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE (2023) A pedestrian bridge could add more walkability and bikeability where Little Chicago Road crosses Morse Reservoir. Currently, the bridge is a two-lane road, and a pedestrian bridge would widen the road.

Back to nature Commentary by Terry Anker
Commentary by Danielle Wilson
Brooklyn-born songwriter Vic Mizzy turned his considerable talents from popular music in the 1940s and ‘50s to the emerging medium of television in the 1960s. Therein came some of his most memorable, if not significant, contributions, including the theme songs from “The Addams Family” and “Green Acres.” Thanks to long runs on the networks, followed by generations of re-runs and remakes, these simple tunes have earned a place in our collective memories. In “Green Acres,” Mizzy uses just 76 words to lay out the tension between Eddie Albert’s Oliver Wendell Douglas, New York power attorney who hopes to commune more directly with nature, and Eva Gabor’s Lisa, who exclaims, “New York is where I’d rather stay – I get allergic smelling hay.” Mizzy has outlined a central tenant of our evolving civilization: What is it to be a human in our natural state? While an increasing number of us today seek urban densities, a generation ago the trend was to flee these confines to more suburban locales. Even further back, we had a preference for the rural. Even in our vacations, we further confuse the question. Millions camp, sleeping under the open sky much as our ancestors did for centuries. Others travel great distances to enjoy luxuries. Yet, as our society continues to plod on, we hear echoes of our past. How do we reconcile our desire to contribute to Albert’s the chores and still enjoy Gabor’s the stores? Are we really getting back to nature if we are “glamping” in some Victorian safari tent? Is it a dodge or just a compromise to our conflicted selves?
By the time most of you are reading this, I will have essentially survived Summer 2018. Woo hoo! I return to the classroom Aug. 2, and while that means I HUMOR will soon be subjected to long days with other peoples’ sometimes smelly and usually angsty teenagers, it also means that in a few weeks, a beautiful yellow bus will come to collect my own precious angels. Can I get an amen? Don’t get me wrong. We’ve had a great summer here at chez Wilson. Quality relaxation time, some fantastic vacations and plenty of Netflix binges. But enough already. Enough of the sleeping ‘til noon or three. Enough of the basement Fortnite marathons. Enough of our college kid all up in my grill. I don’t know about your family, but mine functions more smoothly with schedules and routines and expectations of punctuality and productiveness. My pathetic attempt at a chore chart did not cut it. Bottom line? Everyone is fed up with everyone else. The girls have created a biochemical wasteland in their bathroom. The boys have nearly come to blows over the third car. My husband Doo insists that I complete a honey-do list a mile long because “I’m on vacation.” Yes, I’m on vacation, which by definition means “no work.” See what I mean? Even my partner-incrime is driving me bat-poo crazy. The only solution, my friends, is sweet academic imprisonment. We need places to be and things to do. We need homework and practices and bedtimes. We need our lives to return to normal. So though it may be blasphemous to say, I can’t wait for school to begin! Peace out.

READER’S VIEW City’s treatment of ITM ‘shameful’ Editor, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” -Abraham Lincoln This quote came to mind as I watched the drama unfold between the Indiana Transportation Museum and the City of Noblesville. We are in the final stages of ITM’s eviction from Forest Park. This is a real David and Goliath story. However, unlike in the Bible, Goliath will end up winning this battle. The city has always held all the cards. It is the landlord, it has seats on the Hoosier Heritage Port Authority (which owns the tracks) and it has the deep pockets and formidable firepower of a taxing authority. The ITM is a nonprofit that depends on donations and train fares to pay its bills and is run by volunteers. Still, it managed to successfully operate trains in Hamilton County for decades. But ITM didn’t have a chance once the
city decided it was time to go. The landlord brought all available public resources to bear on the hapless nonprofit. It’s all perfectly legal, but that doesn’t mean it’s right. But this letter is about character. When an organization the size of the City of Noblesville takes aim at one the size of ITM, I believe the larger group should show a little mercy and work in a spirit of cooperation to set things right. None of that happened here. ITM can’t even use the tracks to get the cars to safety because the city won’t let it. It’s shameful. As Noblesville loses a treasured public asset, we need to consider whether our leaders did right by the ITM. They represent us, and the decisions they make should reflect our values. I’m not proud of the way my city has treated the ITM, and I intend to do what I can to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen again. Mike Corbett, Noblesville

READER’S VIEW ITM thanks volunteers, public Editor, To the people of Noblesville, Fishers, towns of Hamilton County, Tipton, Tipton County, Indianapolis, Marion County and the people of Indiana, the board and volunteers of the Indiana Transportation Museum would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of you for your support, including our last day at Forest Park in Noblesville. For more than 52 years the museum has been a part of Forest Park. With our train rides, we gave classes on the history of Indiana rail transportation to school children in Noblesville and neighboring communities. Our volunteers also learned with our community. Many adult and young teenage volunteers learned about working on our historic rail equipment, keeping it all running safely. We are proud of all our volunteers who learned at ITM, then went on to become new railroaders for Norfolk Southern, CSX and Burlington Northern railroads. Individuals and families visited ITM and the Noblesville community from around North America and the world. Operating our trains and seeing the looks of awe on the faces of your children as they saw and touched a real train for the first time gave us more pleasure than we ever imagined possible. Through the years, we had many events in Forest Park. See if you remember ITM’s Hobo Days, Ghost Train, Polar Bear Express, National Train Day, Railfan Days, FairTrain from 1983 to 2015, Dinner in the Diner, Pizza Train, Earth Festival Train, Pork Festival Train, Terror Train, Lights over Morse Reservoir, Noblesville First Friday train rides, Strawberry Festival in Noblesville and the Bunny Hop Train. Many of you will remember our Festival 1988 off-line excursions, celebrating the 75th birthday of our Nickel Plate Road Steam Engine 587. We took the 587 to the Ohio River Tall Stacks Festival, Feast of the Hunters Moon, Mid-City Steam Special, Haines-Apperson Festival Steam Special, IU
football games Steam Specials, Indianapolis to Logansport Steam Special and Indianapolis to Spencer Indiana Steam Special. ITM and its volunteers are honored to be part of your families’ favorite memories. You will always be among our favorite memories. We will never forget serving you. While our museum will no longer be in Noblesville, we really won’t be far away. Very soon, ITM train rides will start running again with excursions and caboose rides in north central and southern Indiana and other locations in the Midwest. We’ve grown and are now partnering with other organizations to serve residents and visitors around Indiana and in neighboring states. We invite you to watch our website and check your local TV stations and newspapers to come ride our trains. Please stay tuned for the rebirth of our 100-year-old steam engine, the NKP 587, and ITM’s next 50 years. Again, thank you for half a century of supporting us and allowing us to educate and serve you. ITM will not be derailed by excuses and minor claims. ITM has grown and learned from this one point of our existence. We will continue to serve Indiana communities and educate on railroad transportation commerce in Indiana. Sincerely, Les McConnell, chair Indiana Transportation Museum

West Nile virus found in multiple areas within county By Noah Alatza news@currentinwestfield.com
Mosquitoes in at least two Hamilton County parks have tested positive for the West Nile virus, with a MOSQUITOES third positive sample retrieved from 2nd and Washington streets in Noblesville and a fourth from U.S. 31 and 181st Street in Westfield. County health officials made the announcement July 13 after collecting samples from parks in Noblesville and Fishers. The first positive sample was reported July 13 in Fishers’ Cumberland Park, 10580 Cumberland Rd. The last reported positive sample was Aug. 22, 2017. Hamilton County Health Dept. vector control specialist Alex Davis, who oversees mosquito operations for the county, said the season is just getting started. “It’s not uncommon to get positive samples in June, but definitely by July we start seeing an increase,” Davis said. “We are pretty much on track with what a normal
year looks like. These samples are not out of the norm.” The health department has breeding sites that have been identified in previous years. Davis said he does routine visits to each site. Samples are sent to the state for testing. Depending on results, Davis said the county will go after the adult mosquito population to prevent the spread of West Nile virus. Davis recommends residents dumping all standing water around the house. Davis said mosquitoes tend to migrate toward stagnant water. “I would expect there to be further positive test results just based on seasons and years past, but prevention is the best key,” Davis said. On July 17, the Hamilton County Health Dept. began spraying the affected areas. A truck-mounted sprayer began spraying at sunset and covered a buffer area of approximately 1 mile around the positively sampled area. For more, visit hamiltoncounty.in.gov/323/ Mosquito-Control.

Blake’s Smiles supports autism causes By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com Blake Dauby is an accomplished singer, a skilled musician and an avid creator of music videos. GIVING BACK In addition, he is a dancer, video editor and a gifted craftsman who loves nothing more than making people smile — literally — through his art. His signature items are handmade puzzle-piece smiles, forged in his pottery studio. He gifts them to anyone in need of a smile. “You keep it as long as you need it or pass it on to someone else who needs it,” said Dauby, a 20-year-old Carmel resident whose varied talents and eclectic tastes belie a lifelong condition that doesn’t deter him. Dauby has autism. “Blake has never let this disorder slow him down,” said Steve Dauby, Blake’s father. “He is very active in his community, school and various clubs. He has participated in show choir, orchestra, Best Buddies, student government, dance marathon and Carmel High School Television, just to name a few things.” Of all things, Blake is probably best known for his ceramics work, a skill he developed at Carmel High School — and one that led to his recent founding of Blake’s Smiles, a nonprofit that raises awareness and funds for groups that support autism causes. Blake, who has already donated $200

to charities by selling and auctioning his ceramic pieces, discovered his artistic gift after taking a ceramics class at Carmel High School, where he graduated in 2017. “We reluctantly signed him up thinking he might not make it past his first day,” Steve Dauby said. “Four years later, with the help of his special aides and patient art teacher Ms. (Sarah) Wolff, he has made incredible clay pieces and has been privileged to have several of his pieces exhibited in annual art fairs.” Buoyed by Blake’s affinity for ceramics, his parents, Steve and Barbara, set up a studio for him in the basement of the family home. There, he creates everything from vessel vases to pots to Sgraffito drape molds to, of course, smiles. “(I) took an art class in high school and made some cool stuff,” Blake said. “(I enjoy) shaping stuff, bowls and cups, on the wheel.” Besides creating ceramic art, Blake also paints, plays guitar, violin and piano and sings the national anthem at CHS basketball and lacrosse games and at autism events. He also works 12 to 15 hours per week at Walgreens on Michigan Road and dedicates time to establishing Blake’s Smiles, which derives its name from his early childhood habit of asking people who weren’t smiling the same question: “Is it fun?” “Since the early age of 3, Blake has been

a visual learner and struggled socially,” Steve said. “He would famously ask anyone he would see without a smile on their face, ‘Is it fun?’ Most people had no clue what or why he was asking this, but it was his way to calm himself that everything was OK if people did not have a smile on their face.” On Aug. 3, Blake will participate in the DOZ Charitable Foundation’s outreach program, which in the past five years has donated more than $100,000 to local charities. Dauby O’Connor & Zaleski is an accounting firm in Carmel, where Steve Dauby is a partner. During the program, part of a DOZ recruiting event for accounting students, Blake will speak about and share his art pieces. Everyone will literally leave with a smile. “The students will actually go home with one that Blake has already made,” said Nicole Wright, assistant controller for DOZ. “They can take them back with them and share the smiles.” Dealing with sensory issues Diagnosed with autism as a young child, Blake Dauby — and his family — endured many of the trials and tribulations associated with the disorder. “Like most kids on the autism spectrum, growing up Blake had numerous sensory issues,” said Steve Dauby, Blake’s father. “Many of these issues can be crippling and alter not only the child but loved ones and care givers. Most refer to the child as being on sensory overload. One of Blake’s many sensory issues was smell and taste. He would not allow his hands, face or lips to touch anything with an odor, different smell or wasn’t clear in appearance.” In time, Blake became involved in multiple activities, including music, clubs, student government and art. He looks forward to a future that includes his job at Walgreens, making and editing music videos, overseeing his nonprofit Blake’s Smiles and refining his art. Oh, and one other thing. “Having fun,” said Blake, who has three sisters Stephanie, Amanda and Samantha, and a brother, Matt. His mother is Barbara Dauby.

Art Fair on the Square returns By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Hamilton County Artists’ Association will return to downtown Noblesville Aug. 4 with the annual Art Fair on the EVENT Square from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Approximately 35 vendors and juried artists will set up shop around the courthouse square. Artwork will be for sale. “There are 35 booths in tents around the perimeter of the courthouse square,” HCAA President Kay Richards said. “Ninth Street will be closed so that people will be able to wander around better.” Richards said art items range from pottery to jewelry to different types of painting. “Everything is for sale, including the pottery, jewelry and textiles as well as the paintings,” Richards said. “It’s fantastic. I’ve seen some of the things they have done. I am familiar with these artists and it’s very high quality and really very interesting work.” The Noblesville Cultural Arts Council also will have a tent. “Noblesville Cultural Arts Council will have a tent representing all of the cultural orga-

nizations that we are uniting in the City of Noblesville,” Richards said. “They will have an individual tent with information about all of these cultural things, including theater, the parks department and what they are doing as far as art and also with concerts.” The HCAA took over the event six years ago. It is free and open to the public. “We encourage people to have a lovely morning at the farmers market and walk across the bridge and come see the beautiful artwork on the square,” Richards said. Artists feature landscapes By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Randall Scott Harden draws on his travels for a variety of landscapes. The longtime Noblesville PAINTINGS resident specializes in oil paintings of landscapes in the United States and Europe. “I’ve been painting about 40 years, fulltime for about 20 years,” Harden said. Harden, 52, and Carol Wagner, a Carmel resident, will hold a meet-the-artists session at Art on Main, 111 W. Main St., Suite 140, Carmel, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 2. Light refreshments will be served. Harden and Wagner are the gallery’s featured artists for August. “We’ll talk about travels and voyages all over the world,” said Harden, who has been associated with Art on Main since it opened in September 2017. “We’ll have paintings from the Midwest and wine country. I’ll have about 20 pieces up and Carol will have 10 to 15.” Harden, who has a home studio in Noblesville, also has his work displayed in a gallery in Fort Wayne. Wagner is retiring from the gallery after this month.
Noblesville artist Randall Scott Harden paints while in Paris. (Submitted photo)
“I’ll still be painting but more or less for pleasure,” said Wagner, who has been painting with oils for 10 years. Wagner’s specialty is still life paintings, but this show will feature landscapes. “Mine are primarily around water. That will be the big difference in this show (from Harden’s paintings),” Wagner said. “The paintings are either from my travels or my friends’ travels. I really love rivers, and probably three or four of my pictures are rivers and streams.”

Blueprint for Improvement: Family basement in West Carmel Commentary by Larry Greene
Background info: This early 2000s home in the Aberdeen neighborhood of West Carmel belongs to a young family. Overall, the home functioned perfectly for the family but lacked a recreational space for the homeowners and their children to workout, watch movies and entertain guests.
BEFORE PROBLEMS The original basement was only partially finished, so there was plenty of square footage that was not being used. The finished side of the basement lacked design elements that would make it a more comfortable and functional space for the entire family.
After
AFTER SOLUTIONS The goal was to better utilize all the space in the basement to create a comfortable area for the family to unwind and relax. 1. The first major change came from finishing the entire basement and dividing it into several rooms – a living space, a bedroom and a home gym. 2. Additionally, new luxury vinyl tile flooring was added to the space. This is a perfect flooring option for any basement because of its durability. 3. A wet bar was created in the living space, making it a great area to entertain and host guests. 4. Also, a projector and projection screen were added in the living space, creating a comfortable home theater. 5. A large barn door was added dividing the living space from the home gym, making both rooms feel more open while also adding a decorative element. Larry Greene is the owner of Case Design/Remodeling. Sail not for sale Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt
Harod Spring in northern Israel. (Photo by Don Knebel)
Harod Spring’s drinking test Commentary by Don Knebel Harod Spring lies at the foot of Mount Gilboa, about 15 miles south of Nazareth in northern Israel. The victorious TRAVEL soldiers for a decisive Biblical battle in the nearby Jezreel Valley were chosen by how they drank from the spring. According to the Book of Judges, nomadic Midianites from the east had repeatedly invaded Israel on camels, killing Israelites and stealing their crops and animals. On one occasion, a large contingent of Midianites was encamped in the Jezreel Valley, preparing for another raid. Gideon, a local leader, assembled 32,000 men at the base of Mount Gilboa, planning a direct attack. God appeared to Gideon, telling him to send home 22,000 men who were afraid to fight the better equipped and more numerous Midianites. God then told Gideon to observe the remaining troops as they drank from Harod Spring, which flows from Mount Gilboa through a cavern opening. Three hundred of Gideon’s men, apparently prone, lapped water from the spring like dogs, using their
cupped hands. The rest of the 10,000 men knelt to drink. At God’s instruction, Gideon sent the kneelers back to their homes and trained the lappers for a daring raid on the Midianites. One night, the 300 raiders, divided into groups of 100, surrounded and then entered the Midianite camp, carrying torches and blowing horns. The startled Midianites scurried from their camp in all directions, killing each other in the ensuing melee. The men Gideon had sent home, joined by other Israelites, eventually annihilated the lost and widely dispersed Midianites. Gideon himself killed two captured Midianite kings whose earlier victims had included his brothers. Today, Harod Spring is within Ma’ayan Harod National Park. A park sign tells about Gideon’s famous drinking test, but a fence in front of the cavern opening prevents visitors from trying out alternative techniques.

My name is Curtis. I’m a 33-year-old man. I can’t swim. At some point GRAMMAR GUY during summertime childhood swimming lessons, I flunked and didn’t receive my certificate to move to the next class. As a result, I dropped out. For a pasty redhead, I already didn’t like being outside in the first place. Now, I can barely doggie paddle my way out of a kiddie pool. If I were to hypothetically win a sailboat, I’d sell it as quickly as possible. I’d put that sail up for sale. The difference between the words sail, sale, sell and cell are salient. And, before you can accuse me of being a sellout, let me assure you – like the theoretical sailboat – my argument will hold water. First, let’s tackle the difference between sail and sale. Sail can be used as both a noun and a verb. As a noun, sail refers to a piece of fabric attached to a boat to help steer it using wind. As a verb, sail refers to a trip taken on a sailboat. A sale is a noun that refers to the act of selling, specifically when a good or ser-
vice is traded for some kind of currency. For example, mattress stores all think it’s a great idea to have big sales over Labor Day weekend. It’s as if the store owners all got together and decided to celebrate hard work by giving people a great excuse to do the exact opposite. Sale is different from sell. Sell is a verb; it is the act of working toward the goal of making the sale. You can sell a boat. Once you sell the boat, you have made a sale. A cell is a noun. It can refer to a few different things. A cell is a small room in which a prisoner is locked. A cell also is a small group acting within a larger organization. A cell is a basic structural unit of all organisms. A cell is a battery. “Cell” is short for “cellular.” I hope my clarification of sail, sale, sell and cell went swimmingly, which is more than I can say about my own swimming skills.
