Noblesville Tour of Historic Homes set for Sept. 19 By Mark Ambrogi “ \PaZ/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ Sue Jourdan is glad to have her downtown Noblesville home on display. Jourdan’s home is one of eight HISTORY homes featureson the 29th Annual Noblesville Tour of Historic Homes, held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 19. Jourdan’s foursquare home was built in 1911 and is the No. 6 stop, at 147 S. 10th St., on the tour, presented by the Noblesville Preservation Alliance. The home was on the tour in 2001, the year after Jourdan and her husband, William, moved in. “We’ve made lots of updates since that time,â€? she said. The home’s original owner was Carl Brock, who owned a dry goods store called Clark and Brock’s Co., in downtown Noblesville. Jourdan said she, her husband or a volunteer will be there to give information about the characteristics of the house and the historical significance of the home. “We love to share. We have pictures of the original owner and a bill of sales from his store,â€? Jourdan said. “We have some personal articles from the original owner that we like to show off.â€? Jourdan and her family lived in Fishers but chose to move to downtown Noblesville after her children graduated from high school. “The main thing is people wanted to see the cool old details of the house,â€? she said. “And my house is very original in a lot of aspects. It has original woodwork, all the hardwood floor, leaded glass doors and bookcases. I have all the modern amenities but it still has a vintage look to it.â€? Emily Compton, on the tour’s marketing committee, said the tour can be walked in two parts, with part on the north end and part on the south end. Special events include the children’s scavenger hunt with the winner earning $25 from The Wild Bookstore on Logan Street. There is also an adult scavenger hunt with the winner earning a one-night stay to Staybridge Suites in Carmel. There will be book signings from Noblesville authors with Susan Crandall signing from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sheriff’s residence and Kurt Meyer at the Jourdan home from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Noblesville Fire Department will have a fire engine on display at the downtown firehouse at S. 8th Street and Maple Avenue. First Presbyterian Church, 1207 Conner St., will have free ice cream and cookie social and church tour. Both events will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On the same day, the Old Mill Festival will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the courthouse square.

Common council recap

Compiled by Sadie Hunter bPSXT/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\

What happened: J Enterprises Inn of Noblesville, LLC introduced ordinance waivers to the council for four wall signs for the Holiday Inn Express & Suites development at 13625 Tegler Dr. in the Saxony Corporate Campus. Why it matters: Ordinances for the Saxony Corporate Campus only allow two wall signs per construction with one ground monument sign. On Aug. 17, the Noblesville Plan Commission sent the request forward with a unanimous unfavorable recommendation after planning staff suggested disapproval.

What’s next: The council will vote at their next meeting.

What happened: Republic Development, LLC introduced text amendments to an ordinance for the Saxony Corporate Campus regarding cross access easements and landscaping. The council waived standard rules to approve the proposed text amendments upon the petitioner’s request due to pressing permit deadlines. Why it matters: The change to the ordinance will allow cross access between business parking lots for vehicle circulation on approximately 280 acres, eliminating parking lot landscaping between separate entities. On Aug. 17, the Noblesville Plan Commission sent the request forward with a unanimous favorable recommendation. Changes will allow drivers and customers to go from business to business without exiting back onto the main highway or road. What happened: Noblesville Schools and the heirs of Frances W. King introduced a change in zoning to the council for property directly north (across Field Drive) of Noblesville High School. The council approved the rezone following a request from Noblesville Schools. The district had hoped to begin using the property at the beginning of the school year, but now wants to get into the building as soon as possible. Why it matters: The 7.4-acre property at 1610 and 1650 Field Dr. will change from single-family residential zoning to residential and government use overlay zoning for the school district, similar to the former Freshman Center on Field Drive, to implement new programs. The district purchased the property earlier this year and plans to repurpose the existing buildings, a church and a home. The district does not currently plan to build any additional structures. The church will be used in a joint effort between five Hamilton County school districts and The Crossing church for students who need an alternative education environment. The home on the property will be used as part of the district’s Project Work campaign to teach life skills to special needs students in an effort to help them live independently.

DISPATCHES Old Mill Festival – Noblesville Main Street is once again hosting the Old Mill Festival arts, crafts and antique show on Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival is located on the historic downtown Noblesville square, and is always looking to feature new local artisans For more information and/or applications, please contact www.noblesvillemainstreet.org where you can fill out an application online. Mayor’s Charity Ball – Mayor John Ditslear invites the public to join him at the annual Noblesville Mayor’s Charity Ball at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at Mustard Seed Gardens, 77 Metsker Lane. Beneficiaries for the event include the Noblesville Youth Assistance Program, Janus Developmental Services, Inc. and the NFD Christmas Food & Toy Drive. Low Back Pain Seminar Dean Widmann focuses on his shot to cut the ribbon on the new store. BdQ\XccTS _W^c^

Cabela’s focuses on locals By Navar Watson “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]c]^Q[TbeX[[T R^\ Cars occupied every curb and parking space as far as the Hamilton 16 IMAX theater Aug. 20, as hundreds of people gathBUSINESS ered for the grand opening of Cabela’s in Noblesville. But unlike other ribbon cutting ceremonies, a pair of scissors didn’t do the trick. Instead, Dean Widmann, manager of the archery department, shot through the ribbon with a bow and arrow. Every Cabela’s store uses a bow and arrow at its ribbon cutting, holding an archery contest with the store’s employees to see who does the honor. Widmann and two other employees won the contest, and then each had to write an essay to the CEO on why he or she wanted to shoot on opening day. The CEO then made the decision. “I’m not a writer by no means, Widmann said, “but I just happened to write from the heart because my passion is bow-hunting and archery and stuff like that, ever since I was a little kid. Reaching children and young adults is a main focus for the Noblesville location, Senior Operations Manager Shannan Bauer said. Bauer wants youth to get “passionate about

the outdoors rather than stay inside playing video games. Hamilton County has several outdoor opportunities, Bauer said, thanks to Geist and Morse reservoirs and the White River, which provide opportunities for fishing and kayaking. Noblesville was an ideal place to open up Cabela’s, Bauer said. Cabela’s corporate office tested the market through Internet catalog sales and found many outdoor enthusiasts in the area. Bauer said every customer who steps into Cabela’s will be helped according to his or her specific outdoor project, whether its camping, fishing or hunting. “We want to outfit them for that entire experience to make sure they have everything, Bauer said. “It’s kind of your one-stop shop before you go out on your adventure. To see more photos of the store’s grand opening, see page 17.

Safe Families for Children to raise money at gala By Anna Skinner “ P]]P/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ Safe Families for Children, a self-funded volunteer based organization aimed at keeping families intact and prevent child neglect and abuse, will be holding a gala FUNDRAISER at the Oak Hill Mansion, 5801 E. 116th St., Carmel on Sept. 11. The organization has been in the Indianapolis metropolitan area since 2008. The gala will be the big event of the year, with last year’s gala raising $80,000 for the organization. Organization assistant director Beth Kinney said she hopes to meet and exceed that goal this year. There will be a live auction, a silent auction and a dinner all starting at 6:30 p.m. Kinney said some of the items in the auction include Disney tickets, a week rental condo in Florida and ski resort rentals. The gala helps raise money to help struggling families in the area who may need to find a spot for their kids while they get

back on their feet. “We provide early intervention services if a parent is strug-

gling and having a hard time, Kinney said. “The parent can call us and we will place the children into a temporary host home, we have a network of homes across the city. Kinney said many of the participants are single mothers looking for help with getting back on their feet, but she said they also take in kids due to substance abuse, incarceration or illnesses. The volunteer host families often work alongside the biological families to build a long term support system. The organization is similar to foster care, with the main difference being that it is voluntary on both sides. The parents call Safe Families in search of help and the families who take in the children don’t receive any compensation. For volunteers interested in helping with the organization, email Jen Harris at jharris@safefamilies.net. For families searching for help, call 519-3839. Standard tickets cost $75 per person, or a table of eight for $600. To purchase tickets or bid on items listed, visit http:// safein15.auction-bid.org/micro2.php.

The overall project will cost $1.1 million, but ROADS because of funding received from the Indiana Department of Transportation the City of Noblesville’s portion is $150,000. Utility relocation was recently completed and construction signs are being installed in the work zone. Rieth-Riley Construction will begin work on the intersection on Sept. 1 with the installation of storm sewers. While closures are limited, construction activity will occur while the intersection is open to traffic. One 20-day closure is planned for the project beginning on Oct. 21. Hague Road immediately north of the intersection will be closed to complete work. During this period, Carrigan Road will still remain open for eastbound and

westbound traffic, while Hague Road will remain open south of Carrigan Road. During the closure, the city recommends that northbound traffic use James Road to 211th Street to Hague Road or detour west to either Schulley Road or Mill Creek Road west of the reservoir. Key dates for the project include: *All dates are weather dependent. “ Sept. 1 â€“ Construction begins. “ Week of Oct. 21 â€“ Hague Road north of Carrigan Closed for approximately 20 days. “ Nov. 16 â€“ Roundabout fully open to traffic. “ June 30, 2016 â€“ Deadline for final surface and pavement markings (project complete). County leads statewide e-filing project By Sadie Hunter “ bPSXT/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ On Aug. 12, Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush helped celebrate and congratulate Hamilton County in their efforts of implementing e-filing of county court COURTS documents. Lead by Indiana Appeals Judge Paul Mathias and Indiana Supreme Court Justice Steven David, Hamilton County’s paving the way for e-filing has been a long time coming. “A former justice on the Supreme Court and I started this whole idea of a case management system and e-filing in late 1999, Judge Mathias said. “So here we are today, now having a statewide case management system. It’s not quite statewide yet but almost there with e-filing as an add-on. It’s taken that long. Good things take time. The project hopes to reduce paper use, save money on postage and save time by both employees and citizens taking fewer trips to the clerk’s office. Announced in 2014 by the Indiana Supreme Court, champions of the project have the ultimate goal for statewide implementation set for the end of 2018. “This is a major step toward all 92 counties accepting electronic filings rather than paper, Chief Justice Rush said. With the change, Hamilton County will accept e-filing for most civil cases “The Indiana Supreme Court is committed to the most effective use of technology to ensure that courts operate with efficiency and fairness, Justice David said. “E-filing is a key component of our modernization plans.

Jake Laird golf outing As friends gathered to check in for the golf outing, I was touched by the many awards and medals on display for Jake Laird. His memory lives on through the Jake Laird Fund. ?W^c^b Qh 0\h ?PdbiTZ “Where’s Amy?â€? ‌ I recently attended the 12th annual Jake Laird Golf Outing on Aug. 21. Jake had been an IMPD officer for four years when he was shot and killed in the line of duty. Following the loss of their son, Mike and Debbie Laird decided to create something positive and formed a non-profit agency. The Jake Laird Fund is dedicated to providing financial support for police officers and firefighters injured in the line of duty who are experiencing financial hardships. In addition the nonprofit provides funding for special projects and equipment for police and fire agencies. The Jake Laird Fund has donated approximately $400,000 to help others in need throughout Indiana. Each year the Laird family and friends host a golf outing to celebrate Jake’s life. They thought the idea would last a couple of years after their son’s tragic death but they are still amazed at the amount of support they receive each year. The event also included Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear and U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks (R-Ind.). I attend and experience so many wonderful things for my column, but it is the meaningful events like this that open our hearts to appreciate life and the ones around us. To make a donation or learn more information, visit thejakelairdmemorialtourney.org

Family friend U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks (R-Ind.) attended the golf outing and sat with Mike and Debbie Laird at dinner.

The 2014-15 school COVER STORY year was the first for the Noblesville site in a building that formerly housed Noblesville East Middle School, 300 N. 17th St. With a year of remodeling work at the new campus, the Carmel site has been closed, consolidating into one Hamilton County campus. As the college’s 32nd campus, applications have increased for the fall semester, and Dan Clark, president of the campus, said he expects that growth to continue. “We’re working hard with the four-year colleges to implement [easy transfer of credits],â€? Clark said. “The high school students and their parents are realizing they can save a lot of money by taking classes at the community college and transferring them to a four-year college.â€? Clark said Ivy Tech’s introductory English course is $400, but the same or similar course at a four-year school is often more than $1,000, which he said could turn into saving $10,000 to $15,000 if a student chooses to complete their first two years at Ivy Tech. The college currently offers about 2,500 classes, but has the capability of accommodating more than 7,000. Friday and Saturday evening classes will begin this fall. “The Carmel site always had Friday night and Saturday classes, and there always was good attendance,â€? Clark said. “We’re trying to adjust our schools to make it easy for people who have to work to go to college.â€? New classes have popped up in many areas of study, but this year the college has several new programs, too. In June, the campus announced the introduction of the new Building Construction Technology program, where the college

FROM THE BACKSHOP Laird outing take could be a record The recent Jake Laird Memorial Golf Outing at Pebble Brook Golf Club in Noblesville had an astounding 90 teams encompassing 360 participants. Laird was an Indianapolis Police Dept. officer who 11 years ago was murdered while on duty. His parents, Mike and Debbie Laird of Noblesville, are deeply immersed in supporting public safety efforts across Hamilton County and beyond. We’ve yet to hear how much money was raised, but we hope it was a record take. Since 2004, the growing event has generated $370,000 for various police and firefighter causes throughout Indiana. “ “ “ Thumbs up to Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson, who last week said he and some fellow party members are “very interested in putting together mechanisms that allow people to climb out of dependency and to become strong parts of the fabric of America. Wouldn’t that be something? “ “ “ Once Vice President Joe Biden declares his intention to seek the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency, all you-knowwhat is going to break loose in Iowa, where Hillary Clinton has a commanding lead, according to recent polling, and in New Hampshire. That race could reduce Republican hopeful Donald Trump to a sideshow, which many believe he already has become. This also might become President Barack Obama’s chance to keep himself in the conversation. “ “ “ Current, will arrive in your mailbox on Sept. 5 instead of Sept. 8. Commentary by Danielle Wilson

The cool side of the pillow Commentary by Terry Anker It has been a sleepless night – tossing and turning as if the dilemma’s resolution could be found on the cool side of the pillow. What is keeping that much needed (and desired) sweet, deep sleep out of reach? Yes, there is much to do. However, there was much to do yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that one – and yet each delivered a perfect and restful slumber. The mind wonders from one topic to the next without finding a satisfactory place to rest. Thoughts emerge and recede never fully gaining the benefit of consideration. Soon, dawn is upon us. The sounds of the night are giving way to the industrious early birds beckoning first light. Focus is emerging from unresolved problems dwindling to a few. The digital clock across the room is advancing – at first by the minute, then in groups of ten or so at a time. What will the day bring? Will the resources and

ability to achieve the objective be attained? If at all, can the problem find a solution? And if it cannot, does it really matter? Soon, the house will come to life. The dog will awaken, stretch awkwardly, and nudge me to let him outside. Alarms will sound and school busses will arrive. If only there was time for a second cup of coffee. Just take it along for the drive to the office. On the radio, the weather forecaster predicts the climate in clichĂŠd but comfortable prose. Did the extra hour this morning of silent thought prepare for the challenges ahead or would the benefit have been greater from a bit more REM? At this point, the machinery of life has begun again and we come to it prepared as we are. Happily, another chance for sleep arrives with nightfall. My husband Doo and I began participating in triathlons last year. We were looking for something new to whip us into shape that wouldn’t require knee replaceHUMOR ment surgery any time soon. We’ve completed three sprints thus far, and are gunning for an Olympic length tri over Labor Day. If you’re in with the Lord, please send up prayers this Sunday! I bring this challenge to your attention because in my quest to beat Doo, my formercollegiate-athlete brother-in-law and every middle-aged female on the planet, I’ve found that in addition to actually training, looking the part is equally important. To that end, I stepped up my game this summer by purchasing not only an honest-to-goodness road bike (the hybrid model I used in my first race was so slow I should have just attached a wicker basket and enjoyed a nice ride to market), but also real adult goggles (that don’t fog over after 2.3 seconds and won’t have to be stripped away for the second half of the swim) and a legit cycling outfit (on sale and straight from China). For me at least, appearing to be a capable, competitive athlete really does provide a boost in confidence, and consequently, in my performance. Plus, if you look like the winners, then even if a pregnant woman pushing a jogging stroller blows past you in the run, you can still pretend it never happened as you roam the post-race celebration, free brew in hand. The problem arises when people assume you know more than you actually do. Case in point, I recently fell off my bike and dropped the chain on a very busy riding trail. I received a few offers of help, but no one actually stopped. I think I looked too dang good! They probably thought I was sprawled in the weeds on purpose, perhaps practicing a therapeutic yoga move. And then I crashed again, less than 10 feet away! This time? Chirp. Alas, though I’ve done a decent job of exuding the serious triathlete vibe, I’m really just a gal trying to stay fit without bionics. Peace out.

Editor, Like it or not, people who produce the most value will quit producing if we take away their rewards for providing wanted products and jobs for the trained productive workers. No national economic system has ever survived for long by practicing socialist Democrat Bernie Sanders’ dictum of removing the profit incentives from the producers and their financial backers. He proposes taxing at 92% to 100% of all above ordinary wages. Anthony Lewis’s expressed lust for Bernie Sanders (Reader’s View, Current in Noblesville, Aug. 25, 2015) was incredibly flowery with no substance. Anthony and his “online” minions are very confused. Mr. Sanders’, Mrs. Clinton’s, and our presi-

dent’s left-wing appeal to Democrats identifies exactly why our economy has stumbled ever since Barney Frank’s forced housing bubble burst in 2007. This bubble burst caused the length and depth of this last economic cycle. Bottom line; incentivizing the innovators to produce the means to distribute wealth in all directions always succeeds -even for many of those dependent upon government entitlements who complain the most. How lame it is to envy and take the rewards from those who build the ‘ladders’ up for the rest of us. The socialist advocates of Sanders want to “Bern” (Anthony’s word) the top half of our ladders. It’s never worked! Mic Mead, Westfield

Not wanting to sound like a broken record, but every year we need to discuss food safety because each season people are either new to tailgating or others simply forget to be careful. You can be sure that from each game some tailgater will go home to be awakened in the night by all the bad symptoms of food poisoning. It’s very easy to avoid problems by following our simple SAFE rules. “ Safe Start - buy fresh USDA certified beef, pork, or poultry. “ Safe Prep - cook all hot foods thoroughly (beef and pork: 160 degrees; and poultry parts: 170). Keep hands and cooking/ serving items clean. “ Safe Storage - keep cold foods cold at least at 40 degrees. Use two coolers: one for beverages (opened frequently) and the other for foods that must be kept cold before and after serving. Since this early part of the season is a time for lighter cold foods, here is a recipe that

should please your guests but not fill them up. Black Bean Salad Chipotle Monterey Jack Chicken Sausage Ingredients: 1 package JOHNSONVILLEŽ Cajun Chicken Sausage or Johnsonville Chipotle, Monterey Jack Cheese Chicken Sausage, sliced into coins, 1 red bell pepper, diced, 1 green bell pepper, diced, 1 green bell pepper, diced, 1 yellow bell pepper, diced, 1/2 cup red onion, diced, 1 can (15 ounces) corn, drained, 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained, 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped, 1/4 cup olive oil, 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, 1 lime, juiced, Salt and pepper to taste Directions: In a large bowl, combine peppers, onion, corn, black beans, sausage and cilantro. In a small bowl, whisk olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Pour dressing over other ingredients and toss well. Serve with tortilla chips. A unique performance with a mix of old American music and bluegrass will come to The Warehouse Sept. PERFORMANCE 5 in the form of husband and wife duo, Kagey Parrish and Laura Wortman. Parrish and Wortman are the two parts of the band The Honey Dewdrops. “We are singer-songwriters who love a lot of old American music, old country music and old bluegrass styles, Parrish said. “There’s an old, familiar sound to (our music) coming from traditional American influences but written from our point of view and the world we live in today. Parrish said he and Wortman write most of their own music, and about 90 percent of their performance will be original work. He described their music as having local harmonies, with their musical instruments consisting of guitars, a mandolin and a banjo. The couple started performing music full time in 2009, and while they are not on tour, they live in Baltimore. They’ve been making music together for 12 years after they met at a rehearsal for a college band, but The Honey Dewdrops have only been in

Helping your child with loss Commentary by Sean Keller, MD Coping with the loss of a family member or friend is difficult for anyone – especially children and adolescents. For FAMILY parents trying to help their children deal with death, the situation becomes even more challenging when the parents themselves are also grieving the loss. Here are some strategies for helping your child cope: “ Let your child know that grieving is OK. Don’t be afraid to let your child see you cry or show emotion, and be sure to let her know that grieving is acceptable. “ Answer questions honestly. Children may have questions about death and dying. Unless there are unusual circumstances, it’s best to answer your child’s questions in an honest, direct, ageappropriate way. “ Offer reassurance. Young children often have “magical thinking. They may feel their own actions caused the family

member’s death. You may hear things like, “I didn’t listen to Grandpa last week, so that’s why he died. “ Know the signs. Children often express grief through anger or silence. Teens may be more likely to engage in risky behavior, especially if they were very close to the person who died (parent, best friend). “ Talk openly. Help your child find closure and acceptance by recalling good memories or looking through photos. Young children may benefit from creating artwork about the person who has died. “ Seek help, if needed. If you feel your child (or an adult), is having difficulty moving forward after a death, consult your primary care physician. Sean Keller, MD, specializes in internal medicine and pediatrics. He is a guest columnist located at IU Health Physicians Internal Medicine & Pediatrics – IU Health Saxony Hospital, 13100 E. 136th St., Ste. 1200, in Fishers. Fall into fitness

Commentary by Kara Babcock

The end of summer can be traumatic for those of us who think anything below 50 degrees qualifies as freezing. EXERCISE You do have to admit though that there’s something crisp and clean about cool fall mornings, free of the hot and humid Indiana summer days. This weather makes for some of the best outdoor workouts all year especially if you are included your little one With older kids back to school and the holidays fast approaching, it can definitely be a challenge to find the times and places to exercise. Walking is one of the ABSOLUTE best ways to get in exercise throughout the day. After your older kids are on the bus, take 10-20 minutes out of your morning to take your little one on a walk in their stroller. Not only will it allow you to take in the fresh air and prepare for all the days obstacles but it will also allow you some time to bond with your little one.

PRESENTED BY

If it’s difficult to take your littlest one out for a walk due to naps, schedules, etc. then make use of your backyard. You can do walking lunges with or without your stroller or little one to work your buns and legs, do jumping jacks for cardio and take a towel or yoga mat outside to do push-ups for your arms and plank to strengthen your core. Doing all of these exercises – 12-18 reps, 3x daily – will significantly improve your overall fitness level along with creating endorphins, which will make your happier! Blueprint for Improvement: Updating your ’90s kitchen BEFORE

Commentary by Larry Greene Background Info: This home is located in the Avian Glen Subdivision in Carmel. It was built in 1994 and the kitchen was original to the home. The homeowners have lived there for eight years and were ready for an update. Before Problems: The cabinets were old thermafoil cabinets that were beginning to peel. The island was too small for the space and countertop would often move in place. The space was poorly utilized and did not meet the needs of the family.

AFTER

After Solutions: The goal was to achieve a fully functional and beautiful kitchen for a busy family. 1. A large prep island was installed to create room for additional seating. 2. The built-in desk and pantry closet were eliminated to provide room for a more functional cabinet pantry with roll-out drawers. This also provided room for additional countertop space. 3. Pull out wire baskets were installed providing the perfect storage solution for produce. 4. Under cabinet lighting and two large pen-

dant lights were installed to brighten up the space. 5. Granite countertops replaced the outdated and decrepit laminate tops. Solid, black granite with a matte finish was used for the perimeter and lighter granite with ample movement was installed on the island. 6. Personalized city tile backsplash was installed allowing the clients to select tile of the cities where they previously lived. 7. Hardwood flooring was installed throughout the first level creating a continuous flow between the kitchen and the rest of the home.

8. New ceramic tile was installed in the adjacent laundry room and half bathroom completing the flow and new look of the home with the kitchen. 9. The traditional kitchen was energized by adding industrial touches in the backsplash, island seating, and lighting. Larry Greene is the owner of Case Design/Remodeling. Deir el-Medina is the name given to the ruins of an ancient Egyptian village that housed workers building tombs in the TRAVEL Valley of the Kings. Records from the site reveal an ancient economic development strategy. Contrary to popular beliefs, Egyptian tombs, including the Great Pyramids, were not built by slaves but by workers employed by the government. When Egyptians began entombing pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings, near Luxor, they built a town about two miles away for the tomb builders and their families. The town, originally named The Place of the Truth, was founded in about 1500 B.C. and lasted until interment in the Valley of the Kings ended about 400 years later. At its peak, the town included more than 100 four or five-room stone houses. At least some of the workers and their wives were literate. Letters written on ostraca and papyrus indicate the work schedule consisted of eight days on and two days off. Workers were given additional days off for festivals and

when they were ill or, on at least one occasion, drunk. During their time off, the workers constructed chapels and tombs for themselves and their families. The government provided the houses, medical care and laundry services. Wages consisted of food, firewood and other supplies the workers needed, with occasional bonuses of items for religious celebrations and materials for their eventual mummification. The painters, stone masons, carpenters and sculptors received about three times the wages of a field hand. When the skilled workers were dissatisfied with their wages and benefits under Pharaoh Ramses III, they went on strike until their demands were satisfied. Deir el-Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, includes some of the most finely decorated tombs in Egypt. It also provides an example of a government creating middle class jobs 3,500 years ago.
