We all need family bonding time COMMENTARY By Terry Anker Each time we travel together on a family vacation, we learn something about each other. That, perhaps more than any other reason, is why we continue to make the effort to take them. It is certainly not without difficulty that we travel with generations ranging from Grandma to grade school (do we shop at outlets or go race gocarts?). But with some effort and empathy, we manage to find middle ground. Maybe it is precisely the time that passes between them that makes them magical. Each year, so much has changed. Children mature, and adults transform at a rate seldom noticed on an hourly interval. But when measured in months, the differences are brought into high contrast. Among the many wonderful things that came to light in this family jaunt was the budding compassion of our eldest. Long suffering from a stomach prone to reaction brought on by strong odors and all things “gross,” he barely survived the diaper stage for his younger brother. But on this trip, he
was seated in the far rear seat of the family truckster en route to a far-away beach destination. His only company was our crated five-month-old puppy, Rex. Much to the consternation of both (dog and owner), the trip was not proceeding well. Our vet is fond of saying that dogs express stress though their gastro-intestinal systems. Suffice it to say, this outing convinced us of that fact. But on this trip, in spite of considerable agitation, our eldest calmly and without fanfare worked to clean what was undoubtedly a dirty carrier and dog – several times – and, putting aside his own discomfort, tried to calm the pet. It led to a good conversation about the care and feeding of human babies. Without hours together, we would have missed it – and that made the drive worthwhile. Truth: We offer paid and unpaid internships to a select number of college students each year, because we want them to experience the editorial model by which we produce these newspapers. We’re trying to shape the future of community journalism, one intern at a time. Unemployment among those in the internship-age pool is at 16 percent. If we can do anything to help those get into the industry on solid footing, we certainly will do so. The U.S. Labor Department couldn’t possibly care less that we still consider ourselves a startup. It wants to force us, and the rest of the domestic business arena, to pay the unpaid as we do the others. We can’t do that on our budget – and unlike the federal government, we stick to the conventions of our financial plan. We actually believed the feds
City needs to be more accommodating of special needs kids Editor: I need to know why there are no designated areas for special needs kids at city park-sponsored Easter egg hunts. We went to the Westfield hunt two weeks ago, and when I asked where the area was for special needs kids, the response was, “I didn’t even think of that!” With one in 90 to 150 kids diagnosed with autism, not to mention numerous other disabilities, why was this not a consideration? My autistic four-year-old daughter got to watch from her stroller the hundreds of other kids hunt and search for Easter eggs, because there was no designated area for kids with her needs. Her only

choice was to be trampled or watch from the sidelines. The coordinators of the event had sense enough to make certain areas designated for age groups; how hard would it have been to create another for kids who need to go slower and take a few minutes longer with concepts? This would not have cost the park or city an additional dime. I was so angry about this at the time, but now I am just sad my sweet four-year-old girl missed out again on simple, fun, happy activities other kids take for granted. Maureen Ponto Westfield

OUR VIEWS
It is our position that we Americans should remember to make the display of our national flag an important part of our summer ritual. As Butler Bulldogs signage is still hanging in shop windows around town, we are reminded that Old Glory is all-too-often neglected in our collective “brand identity.” Shouldn’t we all include an American flag as a part if the plan for our offices and homes? Yet many of us, even when we are happy to hoist a banner for a local sports team, neglect the colors of our country. Certainly the lack of a flag prominently displayed does not necessarily correspond with a failure of patriotism. But it does imply a lack of attention to the matter. When national holidays loom or an international crisis brews, we remember the home team. But this year, we should work to make flag display and presentation a part of our spring cleaning and preparation. Reminders of America cannot be confined to date-specific retail holidays. Consider a flagpole and appropriate lighting when working on a landscape plan. Consider the Stars & Stripes when decorating an office. It is always in good taste. And it is always the right thing to do.
Stand and be counted
It is our position that, in the words of a famed Hoosier poet and singer, you’ve got to stand for something or you will fall for anything. Many credit Seymour, Ind. native John “Cougar” Mellencamp for bringing that truism into pithy light. Others debate the specific origins of the phrase. (We like Peter Marshall, a U.S. Senate Chaplain during WWII, for praying, “Give to us clear vision that we may know where to stand and what to stand for, because unless we stand for something, we shall fall for anything.”) Today, we are locked in debate between often conflicting desires to protect liberty and provide for the weak. The important message, whether from an ‘80s rocker or ‘40s bureaucrat, is that we must express our view. Routinely, we decide our own unworthiness to cast a vote. Driven by a lack of data or understanding, we simply “give” our vote to those who have bothered to become informed. Well, now is our chance. The spring election remains weeks away. Read about candidates. Check out their Web sites. Call them if you have time. But we must become informed and vote.

FIGHTING FOR A CAUSE Westfield's Janet Lome, a three-time breast cancer survivor, is putting her tenacious spirit to work for the upcoming Relay for Life
By Kevin Kane Current in Westfield Left over from her three separate bouts with breast cancer, hats fill Janet Lome’s closet. With her hair and health now restored, the three-time survivor has put away all of those old hats but still wears one very important one as part of Westfield’s Relay For Life. Lome serves as the relay’s director of team development, working to organize the event’s teams, which she said are “the lifeblood” of the event. She’s had even more involvement in the past, chairing the event during three goalshattering years from 2006 to 2008. After a year away, however, she returned to the long hours and responsibilities associated with her heavy involvement, because she realized it’s a cause from which she can’t stay removed. “My son says that I’m fierce,” she said. “He says that my voice changes when I talk about cancer, because I hate cancer. We’ve got to find a cure for it, because so many people are affected by it. It’s the biggest bad thing out there.” Cancer has greatly impacted Lome’s family throughout the years. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997. After beating it once, she again received bad news in 2005 and a third time a few years later. During her last two battles, her cancer progressed to stage IV, a point at which her doctor said “less than one percent” of patients survive. However, Lome kept fighting, and in March of 2009, she was told she was cancer-free for the third time. Cancer took its toll on Lome’s parents as well. Her mother won her own battle with breast cancer more than 30 years ago, but her father’s bout ended differently. He passed away last September after fighting esophageal cancer, even undergoing chemotherapy alongside his daughter at times. Lome said there are many events aiming to raise money and awareness for cancer prevention, but with different forms of cancer affecting her

a fighter's spirit Westfield resident Janet Lome was diagnosed with breast cancer three times, even progressing to stage IV twice. She was told she was cancer-free for the third time in March 2009, and one of the keys to her survival was her attitude, never taking the bad news as a terminal diagnosis. “It was just like, here we go again,” she said.
friends and family, Lome chose to devote all of her efforts towards Relay. “It’s all cancers. It’s not just breast; it’s not just skin,” she said. “It’s not just about me. I wanted to make a difference in Settle everybody’s journey.” The captain of Lome’s Relay team, Westfield resident Mike Settle, is a cancer survivor himself and shares that attitude. After being diagnosed with testicular cancer, Settle’s been cancer-free for six years and captain of the Christ United Methodist Church Holy Rollers the past four. Currently, the team has raised nearly $8,500, more than double any other group’s fundraising. With over a month left before Relay, the team will likely exceed its goal of raising $10,000, and while Relay is a significant time commitment through most of the year, Settle said he personally realized the help such fundraising was providing. “Once I went through my treatments, I quickly learned that I was a beneficiary of all the money that had been raised in the past,” Settle said. “It’s just something that I feel is important to keep working towards so that I can pass some benefits to others down the road.” Lome said it was easy to just “go to the party” last year without any responsibilities but with high goals, she decided

to return to the organizational side. She said Westfield’s Relay For Life has been the biggest in Hamilton County since 2006, and Lome wants it to continue growing and raising the community’s awareness about risk factors and early detection. Her primary goal, though, is to help eradicate cancer in her son’s lifetime. Breast cancer slowed her down three times in the past, but Lome said she has a lot of living – and fighting – left in her. “Some of my friends said I have nine lives,” she said. “I plan to use all of them.”

It’s OK to teach your kids to fight back
Commentary By Danielle Wilson You know what absolutely drives me crazy? When my kids complain about how their siblings or friends aren’t playing nice: “My brother called me stupid!” “My sister hit me!” “My best friend is being mean!” It’s become so common around our house that, barring blood or the use of the “F” word, my husband and I have declared a moratorium on parental intervention. “Don’t be a victim!” we cry. In other words, stick up for yourself and don’t let others take advantage of you. And for the love of Diet Coke, stop expecting Mommy and Daddy to fight your battles! The first time we took this approach was when our oldest was around five. His BFF was a little older and a bit bigger. Our son used to come home in tears after being bullied. We were certain his friend wasn’t intending to hurt him, but just didn’t know his own strength or our son’s sensitive nature. He was five also, for goodness’ sake. So we told our son the next time his friend hit him to punch him back as hard as he could. And guess what? They’ve been best friends ever since and we’ve never had another incident. It seems that as soon as his friend realized he couldn’t push our son around without getting himself hurt, bullying wasn’t worth it. Both our boys have done pretty well with the “Don’t be a victim” approach, but we haven’t had as much luck with our daughters – could be the natural tendencies of girls and boys, or maybe just their personalities. Regardless, our girls continue to run to us for a ruling and sentencing rather than handle it on their own. But now when my youngest comes crying about how her butthole sister just hijacked her favorite skirt, we listen politely and then say, “Don’t be a victim, Maddie! Go get that skirt back!” And she does.
I think my older daughter is struggling because she’s receiving mixed messages. Her elementary school has been drilling students with the “no fighting” rule pretty hard over the last few months. Contrary to what we say, she’s supposed to find an adult if she gets hit or called a name. And I do agree with this rule in most circumstances. But if a teacher or a parent isn’t around, I believe she has the right to defend herself. If somebody pushes her down, I expect her to fight back. If someone calls her a name, I hope she returns a zinger. Basically, I want my daughter to have the confidence of knowing she can handle situations on her own and that she’s strong enough, emotionally and physically, to stand up to bullies. Because the reality is, there won’t always be someone to save her. Since our Don’t Be a Victim campaign commenced, we’ve noticed a few unexpected results. For one, our kids have begun accepting responsibility for their own roles in confrontations. Without Mom and Dad around, they’re forced to consider how their actions contributed to that retaliatory slap or name-calling and they think twice before prolonging the conflict. Our kids are also figuring out that fighting back proves more of a deterrent than tattle-tailing, and that working it out amongst themselves is more beneficial to everyone in the long run. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” If we can get our kids to believe that, to know that they don’t have to be victims, then I think we’ll have done a good job as parents. Peace out.

Westfield In Bloom harvests to help the needy new program. “Westfield In Bloom was very excited when they approached us about the event, which got us excited as well,” Thalman said. Involvement with the program simply involves filling out the Plant a Row Commitment Card and beginning to plant in your garden. Community members can also get involved by volunteering to drop off the fresh produce. The two designated drop off locations are Third Phase in Noblesville and Ameriana Bank in Westfield. “We were excited to hear that people have already volunteered to bring the produce over,” Thalman said. “Fresh vegetables are a wonderful thing in the summer when school is out and there are more mouths to feed.” Visit www.westfield.in.gov/parks for more informaton on Westfield In Bloom and Plant A Row.
Aaron Cummins Current in Westfield Westfield In Bloom and Third Phase, Inc. are encouraging Westfield residents to help fight hunger with their new program, Plant a Row for the Hungry. The Westfield In Bloom committee has developed the program to help the needy this spring. The Plant a Row for the Hungry Program is aimed at urging residents to plant an extra row of fruits, vegetables or herbs to donate to the designated recipient food bank, Third Phase, for 2010. “The idea is to plant extra and the extra crops in your harvest go to charity,” said Melody Jones, the city’s park director. In 2009, over 5,000 families from Westfield, Carmel and Noblesville utilized Third Phase and its services. Third Phase is the largest food bank in Hamilton county and its Associate Director, Ruth Thalman, said she’s optimistic about the
Enough to make you hope the Mayans were right about 2012 COMMENTARY By Jacob Thurman As a person who abhors the “me first” attitude of many on the right, I cringed when speculation arose a few weeks ago regarding Mitch Daniels running for the White House in 2012. Both at the state and national levels, Daniels has proven a liability to the public he pretends to serve. As head of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for the Bush Administration, Daniels championed the infamous Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, leaving most of the country behind. Contrary to his low-ball estimates, these tax cuts, for all practical purposes, “cost” 1.7 trillion dollars (or over twice the price tag of Obama’s stimulus.) And while a tax cut might help you win a popularity contest, it is proven to be a poor way to boost an economy. At the state level, Daniels succeeded in slashing and selling his way toward his fiscal goals, but at what cost? Several of his efforts at privatization failed. His introduction of property tax caps (a mistake that other states made decades ago and are now paying for) could cripple the state for years to come, if not permanently. With nothing left to slash and
revenue streams cut off, Daniels’ successor will most assuredly be forced to raise taxes. Chances are, if your children attend a public school in Indiana, you will see the results of Daniels’s governance first hand. Daniels’s budget will have first or second graders sitting in classes of 30. This is hardly the best way to teach the basics of reading and mathematics during a student’s most vulnerable years. A lot of noise is spouted about how our spending practices are mortgaging our future, but what will really mortgage our future is the continued assault on education. Daniels, along with the ever-incompetent Tony Bennett, have handcuffed our education system and set it up for failure. Again, at what cost are Hoosiers willing to save pennies for the richest among us while the rest of us pay the true price? I couldn’t fathom putting Bush’s Man Mitch in charge of our nation in 2012. Sexual-assault victim to share horrors and advice in Prevail-sponsored event By Martha Allan Current in Westfield Angela Rose was shocked and angry after she was raped. That attitude didn’t go over too well with the police. “The first detective didn’t believe me at all, was very rude to my parents and was convinced I’d made the story up,” she said. At 17, Rose was abducted at knifepoint in the parking lot of a suburban Chicago shopping mall, where she worked. She was sexually assaulted, then released. Rose and her parents persisted, speaking with different detectives days later and was subjected to blame by the authorities. They insinuated that maybe the situation was her fault, including asking her what she was wearing and why was she out so late. Despite this, her attacker, a repeat sex offender who was on parole for murder, was eventually caught and sentenced. “People have an idea in their minds of how people should respond to going through something like that,” said Rose, now 31 and the executive director of PAVE – Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment – which she founded in 2001. “Everybody reacts differently and people need to realize that there’s a whole spectrum of emotions that people
go through. Obviously, not everyone is going to react the same way.” In her presentation, “Fairness, Dignity, Respect,” Rose will talk about sexual violence to parents and teens at Carmel High School from 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 20. Her appearance is sponsored by Prevail, a Noblesville-based organization for Hamilton County, during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. The program is free and open to the public. The topic is particularly timely in light of an alleged February hazing incident involving three Carmel High School basketball players aboard a school bus carrying them back from a game. Carmel police released a report Feb. 22 on the allegations against the players, which included assault and criminal deviate conduct — a sex crime. The case is still under investigation by Carmel police. Rose “The biggest issue is the pervasive silence that surrounds (sexual violence), as well as the victim-blaming,” Rose said. Another is that men as well as women can be victims of sexual assault. “We know that one in four girls and one in six boys, before the age of 18, are going to be sexually abused,” she said. Also,
If you go … What: Angel Rose: “Fairness, Dignity, Respect.” When: 7-8:30 p.m., April 20. Where: Carmel High School cafeteria, 520 E. Main St., Carmel. Admission: Free.
it can be more difficult for men to come to terms with such an experience. Typically, the attacker is someone that is known to the victim; 80 percent of the time the victim knows the offender, said Rose. Boundaries and consent are an area PAVE addresses in its programs, says Rose. “A freely given ‘yes’– not the absence of a ‘no,’” she said. “You have to get in the habit of asking: ‘Can I hold your hand? Can I kiss you? Is this okay?’” Another scary issue right now, Rose said, is the “over-sexualization of ‘tween’ girls – younger than 13. “A lot of these girls are being peer-pressured by each other, by older boys, and even if it doesn’t feel right to them, they’re going to engage in this behavior because they think that’s what they’re supposed to do,” she said. PAVE is working on some educational materials to help parents talk to their kids about it. She’s also working on a book about well-being and life’s crises. “We can’t choose what happens to us in life, but we can certainly choose our response,” she said. “A lot of times we forget that and we feel so controlled by life, but we have a chance to choose how to respond to any trauma in our lives. That’s really empowering.”

Family foundation is a great thing COMMENTARY By Robin Chaddock “A sound body is a first-class thing; a sound mind is an even better thing; but the thing that counts for most in the individual as in the nation is character, the sum of those good qualities that make a man a good man and a woman a good woman.” - Theodore Roosevelt I recently had the good fortune to have dinner with a husband and wife team who individually and together make a lot of wonderful contributions to our city. We spent the better part of two or so hours just chatting about life and who we all are and how we all got where we are. What struck me most was the center to which they continued to return as we were talking about influences – their parents and their grandparents. What struck me even more was the admiration they each had for the other’s parents! That’s not always the case, in my observation. Both were taken with the kindness and selflessness of their parents. Their mothers and fathers had done what they needed to do to raise families, sometimes in difficult circumstances, and had instilled in my friends a deep love for community and resource sharing in the process. These parents had also stayed quite true
to passions and talents they had in life, even if they weren’t income-generating activities. My friend’s parents had taught them to think for themselves and had encouraged them to explore a variety of disciplines and interests. They had moved with my friends through life, offering support and never judgment. It was a delightful experience to be with people who had such good memories of their families and cherished such a bond with the generations before them. Not everyone has great memories of their natural families. Sometimes we have to have families of choice that come into our lives to serve as supporters, encouragers, role models. But what I learned from my friends is that having a good and solid sense of community helps each of us reach to each other, whether we’re blood family or not. I guess I’m not surprised my friends have such a strong positive influence in our larger community. They were taught well what it’s all about. Addressing some questions about the Post Office survey Commentary By Ken Kingshill If you live within an address-challenged part of Westfield or Carmel, you should have received your post office survey by now. I hope you completed and returned it. If not, there’s still time. I’ve received some questions over the past several weeks about the survey and the effects of the proposed address changes. Interestingly, the question I got most was from Carmel residents with Westfield addresses. They wanted to know if they were also going to be included in the survey. The answer is yes, although that issue now should be moot since the surveys have already arrived. Another inquiry bothered me a little. There seems to be some concern that the proposed change in address will somehow affect your property taxes. The change in the city name in your mailing address will not impact your property taxes. If you live in Westfield, you have been paying Westfield taxes all along, and that will not change if your mailing address changes from Carmel to Westfield. You’re not being

physically moved from Carmel into Westfield; just changing your name, so to speak. Some have argued their property value will be affected by the change. That’s pure speculation. No one can say much of anything with certainty regarding home values in the current real estate market and national economic situation. Moreover, I firmly believe there is no real drop off anymore between Carmel and Westfield. With the nature and quality of our schools, the amenities we currently enjoy and the new ones proposed, our city is strongly headed in the right direction. DISPATCHES » Safer water abroad – You know that water in foreign countries can make you sick, but bottled water can be a risk, too. Inspect all bottled water labels carefully. Look for bottles carrying an IBWA (International Bottled Water Association) seal, and check the NSF Web site (nsf.org/ certified/BWPI) to search for brands that meet IBWA standards. As a last resort, hot tap water is less risky than cold. - www.concierge.com
» Soil test – To determine whether your garden soil is ready for seeds, grab a good handful of it. If you can form it into a ball, the soil is too wet. If it crumbles through your fingers and reminds you of chocolate cake, it's ready for planting. If the soil is ready, give it a good stirring and let it sit for several days. Then top-dress it with compost or well-rotted manure and plant beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, radishes, parsnips, lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard and turnips. - www.almanac.com » Good and good for you – Toss one can of white beans and one can of nosalt-added tuna with ½ cup of vinaigrette. (To make your own vinaigrette, shake 5 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil with 2 tbsp. red wine vinegar, 1 tsp. Dijon mustard, ½ tsp. honey, and 1/8 tsp. salt.) Serve over 8 cups of salad greens. -Nutrition Action Healthletter

‘Today Show’ style editor to give beauty tips at Fashion Mall By Haley Vannarsdall Current in Westfield As spring nears, so do the latest fashion trends and NBC’s “Today Show” style editor and In Touch magazine columnist, Bobbie Thomas, hopes to inspire Indianapolis women with her beauty tips and advice. As a part of Simon Malls’ Fashion Now tour, Thomas will be visiting the Fashion Mall at Keystone April 17 to interact, face-to-face with women and give them custom beauty and fashion tips. “I really want women to gain confidence, to inspire them to have fun with shopping again and to stop beating themselves up when they go to try clothes on in the dressing rooms,” Thomas said. Excited to show women how much color can make a difference, Thomas has created a color workshop with a slide show of celebrities where she will demonstrate what colors look best on which women and how to best wear them. There will also be activities during which the audience can win Simon gift cards and many other beauty prizes.
“It’s a privilege to work on national television, but you can’t replace that one-on-one interaction with women,” Thomas said. “It’s the one time I get to personally work with and show different fashions for different body types.” Styles created during the demonstrations can be purchased at stores in the mall at various prices to fit all budgets. The Simon Fashion Now tour will be in Indianapolis April 16 and 17 with events hosted inside the mall all day and evening. Thomas will be available from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., but will also be on hand after the demonstrations to continue her advice to women. “I just want to show women how to enhance their own personal style,” she said. “I’m there to make it easy for them to do that.”
Bobbie Thomas from the 'Today Show' will be at the Fashion Mall April 17 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. offering advice and beauty tips.

The right steel can last a lifetime
COMMENTARY By Chef Michael Vlasich Not many things are more awkward than trying to use a knife you are not comfortable with – or using it for the wrong job. I’m often asked, “What knife is for what use, and how do I care for them so they are sharp and ready to use?” Most households used to have only two or three knives, but, like everything else, bigger is better and more is well … more. For all those questions, here are some answers: • Paring knife: short, easy to use, usually a 2-4” blade used for vegetable and fruit peeling and trimming • Tourney: a small knife similar to a paring knife, except its curved blade makes cutting curved surfaces easier • French or chef’s knife: multi-purpose knife with 8-14” blade engineered for general cutting, chopping mincing and slicing • Utility: light version of a chef ’s knife: 5-7’ blade used for lighter cutting or for inexperienced cooks • Boning knife: blade is 6” long but is thinner and shorter than a chef ’s knife, designed for separating raw meat muscles and fish from bones • Filleting: similar shape to boning yet with flexible blade, designed strictly for boning and filleting fish • Cleaver: heavy-duty chopping (including bones), has broad rectangular blade with varied thicknesses, widths and lengths dependent on the food to be cut or the chefs desire • Carving or slicing knife: finely edged knife used for carving cooked meats and poultry, has a long flexible blade may have a round or pointed end, can be tapered or have a fluted edge These are the basic tools of the trade; most chefs will have a kit consisting of at least 80 percent of these. The real trick is to keep them sharp, because then they are much easier to use

ZESTY GASPACHO SALAD Makes 8-10 servings Ingredients: • 2 medium zucchini diced • 2 medium tomatoes diced • 1 ripe avocado diced • 1/2 cup thinly slice green onion • 2 tsp. minced garlic • 1 each minced fresh jalapeno • 2 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley • 2 tbsp. lemon juice • 1 tbsp. Olive oil blend • Salt and pepper to taste Directions: Hints: Catch all the natural juices while dicing, wash vegetables well first, remove the seeds from the jalapeno Mix all the ingredients together, cover and refrigerate a minimum of four hours.
and will improve the quality of your work. Most knives, when viewed under a microscope, would have a comb-like edge with teeth, although these cannot be seen with the naked eye. When you sharpen with a stone, you are refining the teeth with more definition, and when you are using steel, you are aligning the teeth in a straight row. Never put knives in the dishwasher, as the extreme changes in temperature will ruin the temper of the steel. Use a stone only as needed – in most cases twice or so a year – but learn to use a steel every other time you use your knives. If you follow these basic rules and have purchased a decent quality set to begin with, they will last a life time. Now let’s use your knife skills to make “zesty gazpacho salad,” a great summertime treat.

Body by Science By Doug McGuff, M.D. & John Little One reason for not exercising is that it takes too much time. The premise of this book is that individuals can get a superior workout in 12 minutes a week. Here’s how it works: Our bodies recruit muscles for our activities as they perceive the need. If the weight is heavy enough, all of the muscle fiber types will be called into action to accomplish the task at hand. The goal is to achieve failure for all of the muscle fibers so it will send a signal to the body to grow more muscle. It is important to understand that after muscle fibers are fatigued, they must have time to recover and then grow before another workout is undertaken. The benefits of this training system include increased strength and gastrointestinal transit time, higher resting metabolism, more efficient glucose metabolism, release of body fat stores, improved blood lipid profiles, enhanced flexibility and cardiovascular stimulation. Illustrations and photographs support the text. For more information and a list of recommended trainers, visit Body by Science online at www.bodybyscience.net. The Web site features informational videos as well as video examples of what a super slow, high-intensity workout looks like. COMMENTARY By Tracy Line Once upon a time, there was no such thing as a pet-friendly vacation. Trips were for people and pets were for kennels. Alas, times have changed. Now you and Fido can hit the road together for a vacation that will leave you both drooling. When traveling with your favorite fourlegged friend, you must think like a dog. Look for locations offering outdoor activities your pet can enjoy (think: run, bark, pant, sniff). Hiking, walking the beach, or running through an open field are joy-filled activities that give our pets the exercise they need. To get you moving in the right direction, check out www.BringFido.com. Here, among other things, you’ll find a list of dog-friendly attractions across the US. Topping the list for prime pet-destinations: Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Myrtle Beach State Park, Ft. De Soto Paw Playground & Beach in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Red Rock Canyon in
Las Vegas. Finding the perfect spot to let your sleeping dog lie couldn’t be any easier. Many chain hotels, including Marriott, Doubletree, Embassy Suites, La Quinta, Holiday Inn and even the Conrad are all pet-friendly. Keep in mind that not all locations within a chain allow pets. In addition, many hotels have weight restrictions and some require a deposit. Be sure to understand a specific hotel’s policies before booking your room. For even more fun with Fido, bring him along while you eat. Check out www.petfriendlytravel.com for a great list of pet-friendly restaurants in your vacation destination. Restaurants with outdoor seating may allow you to bring your leashed pet to the table, while others let you keep your pet up in a safe location while you dine. Wherever you go, keep your pet’s needs and safety a priority, and you’re both sure to have a doggone good time. Dealing with bulging, unsightly veins
COMMENTARY By Dr. Jodie Harper and Dr. Angela Corea Superficial blue or red veins can be unsightly. They can be large, bulging, and painful (varicose) or very small and spider-like (reticular or “spider veins”). So how did they get there? And can they be removed safely? In a general sense, the purpose of veins is to bring blood from the tissues back to the heart through a series valves. Visible veins are usuCof O UPON R E E incompetent, ally theF result of longstanding, leaky valves that cause pressure over time. This results in vein dilation and their appearance in the superficial skin. This can be aggravated by heredity, pregnancy, hormones, occupations or situations requiring prolonged standing, obesity, sun exposure or trauma. Compression stockings can slow the progression and keep existing large veins decompressed, but they do not remove the veins. Once the decision to remove these unsightly veins is made, patients need to be assessed by a medical professional. Usually these veins are simply a cosmetic concern. However, sometimes it is a serious medical problem that may require surgical or invasive intervention to alleviate pain or risks of chronic wounds and blood clots. Removal treatment options exist and depend on severity. Large varicose veins are usually treated with more invasive measures like surgery. Vein stripping is a surgical procedure that involves either spinal or general anesthesia. In 20OZ.DRINK

this procedure, an incision is made at one end of the vessel. By tunneling down the vessel under the skin with a specific instrument, it is then pulled out. Radiofrequency ablation is a procedure that involves inserting a sterile catheter into the length of the vein and using radio waves to heat and collapse the vessel. Smaller varicose or reticular (spider veins), can be treated with sclerotherapy. This involves injections directly into these vessels with an agent that scars down the vessel. Laser/pulsed light therapy is a remarkable, affordable non-invasive technique – meaning NO surgery or needles. These techniques are indicated for the treatment of small to medium spider veins. With these lasers, one may also treat tiny capillaries or facial veins, usually a result of sun damage, heredity, or minor trauma. Multiple treatments may be necessary and may result in mild redness and swelling that resolves over several hours. Contact us or your medical professional for more information on getting those bikini legs this season! Dr. Jodie R. Harper is boardcertified in internal medicine, geriatrics and wound care. Dr. Angela Corea is board certified in internal medicine. They are the medical directors at ClarityMD. They can be reached at info@claritymd.com or 317-571-8900.
The many causes of knee pain COMMENTARY By Dmitry M. Arbuck Osteoarthritis is the usual cause of knee pain. At the same time, there are many other reasons for knee pain, and because of that, patients have to be carefully evaluated. Such diverse conditions as gout or sepsis or Lyme disease and others may cause inflammation in the knees. Labs and tests may uncover the exact cause of the knee pain. The usual treatment for knee pain is antiinflammatory medication like Ibuprofen, Naprosyn and others. There is a modern technology of injecting medication inside the knees. It may be a steroid medication to stop inflammation or a very useful injection of an artificial lubricant, which stimulates the knees to produce the natural lubricant and keep the knees healthy. Hyalgan, Euflexxa, and Synvisc are examples of such injections. There is an exciting new development around
the world in the treatment of osteoarthritis with cartilage damage. It includes implanting a stem cell matrix inside the knee, which allows a person to regrow new cartilage and avoid knee-replacement surgery. The artificial knee is the last resort and unfortunately does not last very long; therefore, it is usually not recommended in younger people. Frequently, patients with knee problems have to take opioid pain medications to have better quality of life. Again, this is the last resort and even worse than surgery, because at least surgery provides some resolution, while life-long treatment with narcotic pain medications has no happy ending.

Do you really need it? The evidence that multivitamins offer little if any protection for the average person keeps growing. Still, there are some groups of people who may need them: • Dieters: If a health-care professional advises cutting calories severely. • Strict vegetarians: May be better off with single supplements since multis may have too much of what they don’t need and not enough of what they do. • People with certain disorders: Your doctor should tell you if you have a medical reason for taking a supplement; ask if you have questions. • People with poor diets, especially the very old. • Women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or nursing. -Consumer Reports onHealth

Brace yourself for beetle-mania; they’ll have you screaming
Time to get your yard back into shape
COMMENTARY By Randy Sorrell What are those florescent pink flowering trees buried deep in the woods that are equally comfortable guarding the corners of suburban homes? Or the cheerful yellow wild flowering shrubs dominating woods’ edge? Ever wonder about the dainty pink or white flowering trees keeping those florescent guys company? This fantastic ornamental loves the protected northern and eastern sites of homes and has a marvelous biblical connection. E-mail me if you care to hear the story of the blood-stained petals and crown of thorns. (Answers: redbuds, forsthia, dogwoods). Pears, crabapples and serviceberry, my determined favorite, all explode this time of year and may have challenged your above responses.
BUZZ KILL
I hate to be a downer, especially fresh off our bronzed Spring Break perspectives, but someone has to bring reality into perspective. You probably already have this on your “to do” list, but it’s time to cut last years spent perennials and ornamental grasses to the ground. Yep, all the way to the ground. Fear not. They will return clean and perky, just like you after last week’s respite. Here are the next few sweat producers to manage, in this order: Start at the top and clean
18 | April 13, 2010
COMMENTARY By Holly Funk Many gardeners know the serenity of gardening in May and June. Rain is sufficient, the air is just right and our gardens are full and lush. I am truly grateful for every minute because by the end of June, I’ll be in the throes of the inevitable Beetle Battle. I only have a couple of plants that Japanese beetles munch on. Being ever concerned for plants and their growth, I’ve learned that the beetles simply prefer some plants more than others, so keeping that in mind, I try not to plant those plants. I notice some plants every year, without fail, completely devoured by the beetles. Garden centers are packed with Purpleleafed Sandcherry this time of year. With light pink blooms and attractive foliage it seems like the perfect landscape plant and it is … until July, when it becomes an open smorgasbord for the Japanese beetles. What remains is a skeleton of a shrub … and beetle loathing ensues. Most types of plum are favored by beetles as well as cherry, apricot and peach, all of the same genus, prunus. We all know the roses suffer from beetle damage. The foliage and the flowers seem
to be devoured equally, making it especially dreadful. The Knockout rose seems to defy that standard. American linden (Tilia americana) is susceptible to heavy infestations as well as Japanese maple (Acer palmatum), pin oak (Quercus palustris) and many species of apple (Malus sp.). When considering plants for your landscape, you may want to avoid these if you are a beetle basher. The good news? There are as many plants resistant to beetle feeding as there are plants susceptible to it. For example, burning bushes (Euonymous alatus) rarely succumb to beetle damage. Dogwood (Cornus sp.), redbud (Cercis canadensis) and red maple (Acer rubrum) are tough cookies too. Several evergreens such as holly (Ilex sp.), boxwood (Buxus sp.), yew (Taxus sp.) and juniper (Juniperus sp.) are usually safe from the gluttons. I could write a whole piece on battle tactics should you be ambushed. More on that later, but for now, enjoy your days free of the iridescent intruders…as they are definitely numbered. Holly Funk is an Indiana accredited horticulturist and advanced master gardener residing in Noblesville. Email your gardening woes (or wisdom) to hollyfunk75@yahoo. com.
the gutters, pick up the spent perennials and grasses you just cut back, prune shrub roses back to green stem growth, and then finish cleaning the beds of debris and leaves. To reduce maintenance, carefully spread a granular preemergent weed control and all-purpose fertilizer in the beds. Azaleas, roses, hydrangeas and rhododendrons appreciate plant-specific love, but it’s not critical. Phase two is tuff stuff if you have bloated bed lines. Nothing says perfection like a skillfully dug bed edge – think 4-6” deep at a 45-degree angle with smooth edges. Clumpy/jagged is tacky. Now for the icing on the cake, mulch. A total of 3-4” is plenty, including previous years accumulation. Much more invites problems, pests and some other “P” word that escapes me now. Don’t you love the smell of good mulch, especially if someone else has installed it? Spring into life! Spring into family and the out of doors, where healing begins and the magic of life really does come true. Randy Sorrell is president of SURROUNDINGS by NatureWorks+, a Carmel home improvement firm. Build your brand; don’t be a ‘me too’ company COMMENTARY By David Cain What does your company stand for? What’s your organization’s unique ability? What makes it different? How does your company stand out from the masses? What makes you the “green apple” in a heaping pile of red apples? Most organizations believe their organization is undeniably linked to certain values or claims that make them distinct. Whether those claims are in reference to exceptional customer service or more focused on high product quality, at the end of the day most companies have something they think they stand for. Volvo, for example, stands for safety, whereas BMW stands for high performance, and Ford focuses its messaging on “built tough.” These companies spend millions to impress upon consumers what their brand stands for, or at least what they want you to think it stands for. It’s important to know who you are and to have an identity in the marketplace If you’ve already determined what your claim to fame is, try running that by a search engine. In today’s world, the marketplace can easily be tested with a simple Google or Bing search. If you think
your company is the best at “telephone skills training in central Indiana,” then search that phrase and see what comes up first. If it’s not you, then you might not be the most notable. It’s a search engine economy, and keywords can reveal a lot about where your company ranks. Everyone has to have a unique ability or value proposition. Distill it to a couple of words so people can understand what you do and what you stand for. Add this new message to your Web site. Include it in your content and keywords. Start using your unique value statement in your marketing materials, and soon you’ll start ranking higher and higher. Once you make it to the top, it’ll be easier for people to find you and easier for them to understand what you do. Too often, the couple of words a company stands for are “me too,” because it has taken ownership of nothing unique.

Bob Crothers has just expanded his Internet bariatrics store to a Carmel location. Before opening BJ’s Bariatrics, Crothers was actively involved in the bariatric community. As a former gastric bypass surgery patient, Crothers knows the difficulties of the surgery and the postCrothers op experience. The Internet bariatrics store was started in Feb. 2009 and has been available nationally to those seeking to lose weight. His Internet store now has a physical home in Carmel at 662-G S. Range Line Road. His store caters to the post-op patient looking to lose weight. The store is not a low-carb store, but rather a low-sugar store, which is more important to the postop patient according to Crothers. BJ’s Bariatrics has vitamins and other supplements, such as protein, for sale in their Carmel store or online at www.bjsbariatrics.com. Owner: Bob Crothers 622 S. What the new iPad really is
COMMENTARY By Gary Hubbard I am amazed at how many times I have heard the perspective that Apple’s latest gadget could replace a laptop; it’s a clear testament to the power of the Steve Jobs hype machine. The iPad is actually not “like” anything currently on the market, so replacing something else as important as a laptop computer with this new device is not very feasible. Envision an iPod Touch on steroids – that’s what the iPad really is. Steve Jobs is a really smart guy; he wouldn’t create a new device that makes his laptops irrelevant! Lots of reviews are comparing it to the “netbook” category, but I disagree. Netbooks are designed to focus on productivity and the creation of information, while the iPad is better suited for entertainment and the consumption of information. It’s entirely conceivable for lots of people to own a netbook and an iPad, because they really do things well in different areas. The best way that I can think of positioning
the iPad is for those that want an e-reader (like the Kindle or Nook), a video playback system (like a portable DVD player), a portable gaming system (like the PSP), a music system (like the iPod) and an amazing Web browser/ e-mail terminal that’s perfect for surfing while watching TV – all rolled into one device. A laptop, on the other hand, is much more suited to word processing, spreadsheets and other productivity tasks and less suited to the entertainment side where the iPad shines. Both can do what the other specializes in, but not very efficiently. For example, to perform simple word processing tasks on the iPad (an essential part of any educational use), you have to buy (and learn) a special word processing program and get used to typing with the onscreen keyboard. You can buy an optional external keyboard, but now you’re eliminating some of the big advantages of the iPad (the form factor and multitouch interface) and adding even more cost and more bulk to get it to do something it really
wasn’t designed to do. Conversely, lying around on the couch trying to check e-mail or surf the web with a laptop or Netbook isn’t nearly as elegant as it is with the iPad. The iPad uses the same operating system as the iPhone, so you still can’t view flash content from Internet sites (big blank boxes will replace any flash video on a Web page) or watch video from popular sites like Hulu or Netflix. Additionally, the iPad also is not capable of multitasking, so you can only run one application at a time and there is no camera on the iPad, so webcam activities are also a no-go. The gaming experience on the iPad is substantially better than it is on a Netbook or even a laptop because of the light-weight design, the built-in “accelerometer” and the gaming apps that are (and will continue to be) developed for this platform. I assure you everyone would love to own an iPad because it’s so unique, but make sure you understand what it really does before you plunk down your cash. Ready to graduate from grammar school? COMMENTARY By Brandie Bohney I had an interesting question pass through my e-mail inbox recently. And because we’re rapidly approaching the season of graduations, I thought I would present it now before anyone trips up the steps on the way to receiving a diploma or degree. The question deals with the verb form of graduate: “Is it correct to say, ‘he graduated high school’ or ‘he graduated from high school’?” I’ve heard the statement made both ways. And almost certainly one of the two forms sounds horribly incorrect to you. Most grammarians would not find graduated high school acceptable, but you’ll find the use of it that way in many dictionaries. Often with a usage note. Still, that creates some confusion. And it’s completely acceptable to say a high school graduated 450 students in 2007. So why can a high school graduate students, but a student can’t graduate high school? The answer lies in the tricky world of transitive and intransitive verbs. Intransitive verbs do not – and cannot – take direct objects, and they cannot be written in passive voice. Transitive verbs must take direct object and can be used in passive voice. Graduate is one of those crazy verbs that can used both transitively and intransitively. Here’s the trick to determine whether your verb (in this case, graduate) is transitive or in-
transitive: End the sentence without any words following the verb. If it makes sense, the verb is intransitive. If not, you need an object, and the verb is transitive. For example, Marie graduated makes sense all by itself. On the other hand, Butler University graduated does not. To make the Butler sentence logical, you need to say who or what the university bestowed de2010 ES350 grees upon. In Marie’s case, we know by the use with Premium Package 2010 of the verb that a degree was bestowed upon her. Fair fighting is important both for parents and children COMMENTARY By Becky Kapsalis Whenever two adults live together and there are children involved, one can almost be assured there will be a difference of opinion on the application of rules. Remember, we’re coming from different upbringings. We either like the way we were raised and raise our kids accordingly or we are upset with the way we were raised and do the opposite. And at the same time, our partner is processing similar attributes – hence the battleground for divisive disagreements where there are no winners. John Bradshaw’s “The Family” lists 10 rules for fair fighting (if there is such a thing) to develop better structure for ourselves as we offer better structure for our children when we choose to disagree. I’ve paraphrased Bradshaw’s list of rules. They are to be read and absorbed by both parties before the fair fighting begins. Most successes come from good preparation. Fair fighting with your spouse is no exception. Practicing these 10 rules together before the fight helps find mutual agreement while avoiding power struggles, egocentric outbursts and coercive battles. (That’s what truly takes place when we disruptively disagree). The emo-
tional balances of our children is at stake, and, believe me, they are listening and learning. Here than are the 10 rules to practice: 1. Be assertive (confident), not aggressive (ready to attack) 2. Avoid using past histories as weapons of righteousness. 3. Avoid lecturing. Stick to the issue at hand. 4. Avoid making judgments or excuses. 5. Avoid making comparisons. 6. Be thoroughly honest. 7. Avoid arguing over details. 8. Argue about one issue at a time. 9. Work on a solution, not who’s right. 10. Avoid all personal verbal and physical assaults. Discuss these 10 rules and work on them together ONE AT A TIME. They are in no particular order, and there may be some I haven’t addressed. Feel free to add your own and practice, practice, practice fair fighting. Hugs! Becky Kapsalis. aka YiaYia (pronounced Ya-Ya.) is a certified parenting advocate and child behavior coach. White is making a comeback in home decorating Commentary By Vicky Early Just as it seemed the world of interior decorating was firmly ensconced in deep and vibrant colors, white is knocking at the front door. The white-on-white pallet, once reserved for summer homes and shabby chic décor, is stunning in bedrooms that demand a timeless, serene feel. White on white in living space offers a sleek glamour last visited in the days of old Hollywood. The secret to the beauty of white in these settings is layers. Layers of shades of white, combined with textures and contrasts, develop the architectural beauty of a room. Although true white falls in the realm of question when defining color theory, I am using it as a color in the decorating sense. In fact, there are countless versions of white created by the addition of a tiny amount of another tone, such as umber, black, red, yellow and blue. Because the goal is to create anything but a sterile environment, most whites will be dressed up with hints of tint. If the idea of your white being tainted by tint is concerning, keep in mind most designers actually consider white a tint, not a color, but for our purposes we’ll consider it a color and discuss the tints you can put into it. A white with a hint of blue can create a cold appearance. An antique white or one with a touch of yellow or brown provides a softer, warmer glow. Tints of gray give you a modern,
edgy feel that balances beautifully with stark white accessories or trim. If you are not comfortable with the concept of faint tints in white, visit a paint store and pick up a variety of white paint samples. Study the nuances and see if the you can begin to see the bare visible undertones of tints. The names provided by the paint manufacturer might give you a hint. Keep in mind that in layering your whites, the undertones will get stronger as the size of the piece increases. Umber undertones will flow with warm golden undertones, but pink-ish whites will scream if placed next to an antique that is yellow and umber. Just imagine what the more saturated versions of your tints would look like together, and work from there. While a total white-on-white room can be a masterpiece, decorating with white can be as simple as adding a few fresh white touches to your already finished room with the following suggestions.
White woodwork, trim, and wainscoting
look sparkly and new. If you want a real change, consider adding white crown molding for added eye appeal.
White furniture
One of my most versatile pieces of furniture ever was a white upholstered sofa. When soil showed its dirty face, I would simply clean it with a mild solution of detergent and water. It probably looked good for about 6-7 years, and then it was relegated to a bedroom.
White accessories
Accessories can be anything added to a space that provides interest and texture. My favorite is white is rich pottery, while iridescent white glass provides a luminous quality to a space. White is best used in collections – it is a bit too much of a contrast when placed with strong tones. White dinnerware can function in this way, as well, adding a classy richness to the décor. Could white be the new black? Probably not, but this serene color option is poised for a welcome comeback.
The popularity of white trim waxes and wanes with the years, but it’s still the freshest and cleanest look around. A quick touch-up every few years, and your woodwork will always

•Turquoise — This delicate and feminine blue evokes memories of tropical beaches and cool clear waters. •Violet — The color of heather and spring blooms, violet, a cross between lavender and purple is a romantic, feminine gentle hue with uplifting properties. •Aurora —A deep, yet soft yellow with a slightly greenish hue, Aurora, according to Pantone, represents the first glimpse of sunshine as it rises over the horizon. This is a more wearable yellow than brighter hues. •Tomato Puree — This is the season’s boldest color in a classic, clean pinky red. This uplifting tone works really well with all neutrals or can be teamed with turquoise for a retro look. •Pink Champagne — a wispy combination of ivory and beige provides a subtle hint of warm color and provides a sophisticated blank canvas for almost any shade.
to keep your body, including your skin, hydrated, however the outermost layer of skin does not absorb water since it is made up of dead skin cells. Moisture level of skin is not determined by internal factors, but rather external ones, such as cold or hot air, dry heat and by the number of oil-producing glands you have. So if you want to hydrate your skin, exfoliate it weekly with a sea-salt scrub or other exfoliating agent to remove dead skin, and then apply a rich moisturizer while your skin still is damp.

A meal lasts a lifetime – picture or no picture COMMENTARY By Mike Redmond Just back from vacation. As they used to say in my hometown paper, The Hooterville World Guardian, a good time was had by all and refreshments were served. About those refreshments … I noticed something on this trip that puzzled me. Every time I sat down to eat, someone at a table nearby would produce a camera and start flashing away, paparazzi style. No, not at me. At their food. I’m not kidding. Every single meal – and I ate a lot of ‘em – someone would be aiming a camera – cell phone, point-and-shoot, single-lens reflex – at their plate. Didn’t matter what it was, either. From a hamburger and fries to a lobster dinner, they all got the “Say CHEESE” treatment. Including the cheese. Now, I have been a photographer, and I have done food photography for newspapers, but I’ve never photographed my own food. In fact, the whole idea seems just a little weird to me. And for a guy who knows weird as well as I do, that is saying something. Maybe it’s because I am half-McKenzie, which means my veins are coursing with the blood of a people who remember every meal they have ever eaten. I am not kidding. Come to one of our family reunions sometime. The top three conversational topics are What I Am
J.D. Walls & Associates proudly announces the addition of attorney Mathew S. Lewis as a new associate. See Mr. Lewis for estate planning, asset protection, probate administration and guardianships.
Eating, What I Have Eaten, and What I Hope To Eat Someday. When do we have these conversations? While we’re eating, of course. Of course, we have our favorites – the classics, if you will: Grandma McKenzie’s fried and braised squirrel; fresh hams with their crispy crackling skin and rich, tender meat (generally preferred to roast beef, in part because hogs paid a lot of McKenzie mortgages); glorious new asparagus, unburdened by sauces; morel mushrooms, one of the signs that truly we have a Benevolent Creator who wants us to be happy; and desserts of all descriptions. All are remembered fondly, recreated faithfully or anticipated hungrily. Usually when we’re standing in the buffet line. I also have keen memories of restaurant meals, some of them almost 50 years old, from simple hamburgers at a drive-in in Huntington to lobster ravioli at an Indianapolis restaurant
that closed before I was able to go back and make sure I hadn’t imagined the entire thing, to boudin sausage eaten at a small chrome-legged table in a shack added onto a gas station near Lafayette, La.They are as alive in my memory as if I had eaten them yesterday. Which brings up an interesting point. Why is it that I can remember all these meals from long ago, but am not entirely certain about what I might have had for dinner last night? This points out the value of taking photos of your food, at least for those of us who have a few thousand miles on the odometer. Don’t remember what you ate? Look on your camera. I’ve talked to some people about their food photos, though, and I don’t think that’s exactly why they do it. I think they’re using the photos as more of a visual diary, which is actually kind of cool. And useful. No more arguments over whether the pizza was with pepperoni or sausage. Now you’ll have conclusive proof. Which gets me back to what I ate last night. I just remembered. Canned tuna. No photo necessary. Mike Redmond is an author, journalist, humorist and speaker. I’m just a high-tech wreck COMMENTARY By Dick Wolfsie The iPad is the newest offering by Apple genius Steve Jobs. I just read an article about it that noted, “This will totally affect your life.” I know it will change mine. The toughest part of the technological revolution for me has been coming up with plausible reasons why I’m not going to buy each new gadget. When I was in college, I used a manual Underwood typewriter. When electric typewriters became the rage, I fought it tooth and fingernail. I asserted there was a downside to typing faster than you can think. Computers are even speedier, so I use that excuse to explain the drivel I put out every week. My battle with technology continued into the early ’70s when I refused to buy Post-it notes because I felt they were a lazy way to remember things. My concerns did not make for sparkling cocktail conversation with a first date, although I didn’t have a lot of first dates. I kept forgetting to show up. When I first heard about fax machines, I was
also resistant. I finally went out and bought one in l980, but I had nothing to fax. Thirty years later, I still don’t have anything to fax. Have you ever met me? Do I look like a person who has documents that need to get someplace in 30 seconds? I remember the first time I saw someone with a cell phone. I was playing golf back in the early ’90s and a guy was calling his wife on the third tee. Then his boss called him on the 4th tee. And on the next hole his dentist’s office called him. Avoiding people was the very reason I was playing golf. I relented and bought a cell phone, of course, but I haven’t learned how to fully use it. I have never taken a photo with my phone. And the only text I have ever gotten was from AT&T trying to get me to cough up the bucks for an iPhone. The big cellular providers are missing some good opportunities to market to older people. How about a cell phone with a metal detector in it, so I can go to Indiana Dunes and poke around for nickels in the sand? Or a gentle
alarm to wake me from my nap to let me know it’s time to go to bed? Where is AARP when I need it? Now, let’s talk about Twitter. Every day I get e-mails from people who say they are following me on Twitter. At first that struck me as creepy, but wait: I’m not on Twitter. So how can I be followed? Fine, you might as well also follow me to the ballet, the international turkey-calling contest or a clogging demonstration. Good luck. Reluctantly, I joined Facebook, but I still can’t figure out how this whole thing works. The other day a lady was ticked at something I said on TV and she wrote me a note and posted it on my wall. Why are people writing on my wall? Were they brought up in a New York subway? Now the whole world knows what a jerk I am. This was supposed to be a secret. I have a confession to make. I bought a Kindle, one of those hand-held doodads that downloads entire books to view on an electronic screen. I do miss the feel of real paper, though. So I’m using Post-it notes to mark my favorite pages.

Find cancer early. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 48,010 people will be diagnosed with head and neck cancer this year. Many of those are related to tobacco use, while others may have a relationship to viral causes such as HPV and Epstein-Barr virus. When irregularities are found very early through a quick and painless physical examination of the mouth, facial area and neck, these cancers can be more easily treated without significant complications.
Free Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Screening FRIDAY, APRIL 16, 1 P.M. – 3 P.M. Clarian North Medical Center 11700 N. Meridian, Carmel Call 800-265-3220 to schedule a painless, 5-minute screening
The multidisciplinary team at Clarian North Medical Center helps hundreds of patients each year find and survive many types of cancer. In addition, these patients have access to the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center and Methodist Cancer Center resources, including radiation oncology and clinical trials, at numerous locations throughout the area.
