The Westfield Washington School District’s $90 million construction referendum passed with a 54 percent vote May education 2. The referendum was proposed after an operational referendum of 20 cents per $100 of assessed value passed with an 81 percent vote in November 2016. That referendum was a renewal that lowered a previous rate of 23 cents per $100 of assessed value by 3 cents. It will last for seven years. Out of 4,864 voters, 2,631 voted for the referendum and 2,233 voted against it. Jeff Boller, a member of the construction referendum Political Action Committee and WWS parent, said he’s glad the referendum passed. “I am very happy with the results of the election, although I wish more people could

have been more accepting of the referendum,” he stated via email to Current. “Ultimately, I understand that additional taxes are never anybody’s desire, but I am proud of the educational system that WWS has built. I believe that this referendum puts Westfield on solid ground to continue to offer what is constantly praised as one of the (highest)

performing educational systems in the state. With one daughter already moved on from Westfield schools and employed as a teacher in Indy and two boys that will both be in high school next year, I am excited to have been part of a referendum that laid the foundation for future generations to come.” The construction referendum would allow for expansions to the intermediate, middle and high schools and maintenance to the elementary schools. The expansions are expected to allow for a total of 1,700 additional students at the intermediate, middle and high schools. Cost was estimated at approximately 30 cents per $100 assessed value and would last 20 years for taxpayers. On average, the referendum would cost a $250,000 home $32 a month. The construction referendum was the only question on the May 2 special election ballot. For more on future school construction. See Page 6.

Westfield Washington Schools officials presented new construction renderings and explained why they believe schools a $90 million referendum is needed for the school district. The roundtable meeting was held April 27, before the referendum passed May 2. The high school’s renovation and expansion is expected to exceed $42 million, while the middle and intermediate schools would cost a combined $23 million. Districtwide renovations will cost nearly $24 million. Superintendent Sherry Grate said district-wide funds would be allocated to “elementary schools first, then to maintenance of our buildings.” Westfield Intermediate School Principal Annette Patchett said her school was near capacity. “I had to build four additional walls, eight new tables were added, some closets turned into offices, the band had to be put in the LGI, but we made it work,” she said. Patchett added she is “simply out of room for the kids.” A vital focus of the meeting was what CD:

Meet your teacher: Erika Kollinger Grade/subject: English 11-5 and 11-6 and English Language Learner Teacher of Record at Westfield High School Number of years teaching: Nine Background/Schooling (college & high school): Providence Catholic High School (New Lenox, Ill.); B.A. English Education (grades 6-12), Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, Ill.); B.A. Corporate Communication, Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, Ill.); MAT Instructional Strategies, Rockford University (Rockford, Ill.) Why did you become a teacher? “When it came time to choose a career path, I thought about my strengths and interests and realized I have always been a teacher in some capacity. Whether it was tutoring fellow classmates in high school and college or giving horseback riding instructions, I was already using core teaching strategies. After realizing what I was destined to do, I quickly selected English as my subject of choice. Reading, writing and speaking well are priceless skills that we each need, regardless of the diverse paths we will take in life. I love knowing that I have the ability to help others develop skills that are so essential to everyday life and future success.”

What goals do you have for your students? “The primary goal I have for students is for them to give learning a chance. Kollinger I challenge students to engage in having passion and let what they have learned seep into that passion.” What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills? “One of the most important things I encourage parents to do is create a positive learning environment at home. Creating a positive environment includes establishing a homework routine and having a place for studying with ambience that will make students feel successful. Another suggestion is for parents to become involved in the learning process.” Name your favorite movie: “‘Rudy.’” Name your favorite musician or band: “Right now, I love the music from the show ‘Nashville.’” What’s something your students might not know about you? “I have hiked five “fourteeners” (mountains with summits over 14,000-feet elevation) and competitively showed horses in several disciplines through high school and college.”

Local Goodwill recognized By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com The Carey Road Goodwill takes great pride in hiring employees who might experience barriaccomplishment ers, and it was recognized at the Goodwill Annual Awards Breakfast at the JW Marriot in downtown Indianapolis April 28 for its commitment to the Goodwill mission, which is to empower people through education, health and employment by hiring employees with barriers. Stephanie Poynter, a team lead at the store, knows firsthand how Goodwill can help people get back on their feet. “I came here on house arrest,” she said. “I had two felonies, and thankfully, this place employed me, and immediately after I got out of house arrest, I was able to get both my felonies reduced to misdemeanors.” Other ways Goodwill helps is by accommodating people with autism or other special needs, such as blindness and cerebral palsy. “Goodwill is working with people where some other places may see them as (not able to be hired),” Poynter said. “We are much more willing to work with them on

Racing past a link to becoming Indianapolis 500 Festival princess

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com

Katherine Cole seemed destined to be a 500 Festival princess. Her relatives ran Cole indy 500 Motor Racing Company and had a car in the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911. “I grew up racing myself in the Soap Box Derby,” Cole said. Cole, a 2013 Westfield High School Cole graduate and 2017 Indiana University graduate, raced from the time she was 7 to 18. “Everything about it is inspiring,” said Cole, who was in the IU Figure Skating Club. “The princess program has given me a platform to show young girls that they can be a princess and a racecar driver.” Cole said the Soap Box Derby car was all about science, aerodynamics and math. “I would spend all winter working with my dad in our garage making it as fast as we can,” Cole said. “I raced in the world championships four times, and I was one of the few girls there. It’s important for girls to show we can do that, too. Every time I would go up against a boy, which was almost every time, my dad would say, ‘It’s just a boy.’ My dad (David) was a great dad for girls.”

Her younger sister, Natalie, also raced in the Soap Box Derby. Cole said she is eager for Kids Day May 13. “I can’t wait to have all the kids there to tell them we’re real princesses and get them excited about that race,” Cole said. Cole has a connection to fellow Festival princess Mackenzie Burnworth, a 2014 Westfield graduate. “My mom (Jessica) was her firstBurnworth grade teacher,” Cole said. “It’s fun to have another Westfield girl with me.” Burnworth said Cole’s mother was one of her favorite teachers. Burnworth is majoring in risk management and insurance as a junior at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne. “I’m always looking for new opportunities to learn and grow and develop, not only as a leader, but a friend and teammate,” Burnworth said of her motivation for being a princess. “I’m on the women’s soccer team, and I’m also involved on campus. So being able to go out in my community and teach about the 500 Festival and Indy 500 is an amazing experience. I’m meeting all these little kids that have no idea what it is.”

Local business owner goes from supermodel to power tools By Heather Collins • news@currentinwestfield.com Lauren Bower, 33, a former model and singer, has opened her own business, The Weathervane Antiques & Home Market in Westfield, to showcase cover story her eye for hidden treasures, vintage pieces and modern looks. Bower is a Carmel resident and wife and mother of four. Previously, Bower modeled for CoverGirl, Pantene, Under Armour and Procter & Gamble and sang with her father, Tim Wright of the Wright Brothers Band. Bower said during her time as a model, she became disheartened by the constant dietary restrictions, the pressures to be a certain size, the vanity and unsavory Chicago-based modeling agencies. Bower said one of her only truly positive modeling experiences was with the Carmel-based Helen Wells Agency. Bower said it wasn’t until she became a Christian that she realized how unfulfilling her life was. Soon after, she changed her career path from supermodel to power tools and began repurposing antiques and used furniture and pursuing her newest line of work as owner and founder of The Weathervane Antiques & Home Market. “It’s the sweet, common things that come natural to you that will fulfill you,” she said. A self-made interior designer, Bower said she grew up around antiques and fine art. As a youth, she said everyone called her house “the museum.” Bower said her love for design and fine art was passed down from her mom, Dianne Wright, an interior designer and art gallery director at Coats Wright Art and Design in Carmel. “(Bower) is as at ease with a table saw and electric screwdriver as she was in 6-inch heels at a photo shoot for Helen Wells Agency,” Wright said. “The bonus is she calls the shots.” Bower said the mission of The Weathervane is to provide Hoosiers with a place to shop for statement pieces, timeless accents, forgotten treasures and everything in-between. “Antiques are where my heart is, and I also love mixing it with new furniture, so I blended the two. And that’s what The Weathervane is, it’s a blending of new and old,” she said. Bower said the TV show “Fixer Upper” gave her confidence to blend old and new styles. She said she decided to jump on the style while it’s current and not dated. For

example, Bower said because of “Fixer Upper,” using an old workbench from the 1920s as an entertainment stand isn’t tacky anymore. The antique market is housed in a warehouse. The warehouse space includes vignettes throughout the floor, a designing room area, living room suite and more. “It feels more like a retail space, but you’re in a warehouse,” Bower said. Bower finds one-of-a-kind antique treasures and fixeruppers at antique shows, auctions and farmhouses and estate sales. She said walking through the warehouse is like the ultimate treasure hunt. “I already found all of the cool stuff for you. If it’s sifted through my eye, then you know it’s cool,” she said. “I love the hunt to find special, unique pieces.” The Weathervane features all styles but leans toward homegrown or barn-house chic. Styles also include Boho, modern, mid-century modern and traditional.

Lauren Bower combines new furniture with antiques at The Weathervane Antique & Home Market in Westfield.

Lauren Bower said the goal of her business, The Weathervane Antiques & Home Market, is to eventually integrate interior design services. Currently, The Weathervane is by appointment-only. Appointments can be made by contacting The Weathervane Antiques & Home Market via Facebook. The showroom is at 17819 Commerce Dr. in Westfield. Bower is working on offering an online store via Facebook and plans to open a retail space in the future. For information or to view upcoming market days, follow The Weathervane Antiques & Home Market on Facebook.

Rooting for hubby — not

o b s e r v a tion Reverse technology

Commentary by Danielle Wilson

Commentary by Terry Anker The rise of the machines has been a theme of science fiction writers since the beginning of the genre. We invest in our mechanical devices, hoping that they will someday come to serve our every need, all the while failing to notice our own growing dependency. With comfort comes complacency. And with complacency comes our subjection to the very devices we create to serve us. Yet with each new generation of innovation, we humans have found sufficient ways to stay on top of the food chain. We have mastered pony cars just as we had mastered ponies centuries before. Our obsession with dominating them – all with the intention of capturing their practical use – ultimately leads to a relationship of a more symbiotic nature. We protect and care for them even as they protect and care for us. Now, technology moves with ever-increasing velocity. Our capacity to learn and develop dominion over it is strained. With generations of smartphones replacing the old before we have figured out a modicum of their features, we are continually left to feel as if the technology has finally outpaced our ability – that we are the inferior. We revert to previous known methods to gain footing. There was a time, not that long ago, that automobiles were mechanical devices. If one failed to start, some human would tinker a bit with hand tools and experience to restore its life. Today, a wire is attached to the car’s brain to ask it what might be wrong. What if failure or impact has rendered it with a car-cussion so that it forgets its mission to serve us? Well, we could walk. And would we have a choice? READER ’ S V I E W Need for food is great Editor, Saturday, May 13, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United States Postal Service and other partners are asking residents to help Stamp Out Hunger. The annual postal food drive has grown into a national effort that provides assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table including many of your friends and neighbors. The need for food donations is great. Currently, 49 million Americans – 1 in 6 – are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Thirteen million are children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school. More than 5 million seniors over age 60 are food insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes. Our food drive’s timing is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need.

With the help of our communities, Letter Carriers and the US Postal Service have collected over 1.5 billion pounds of food in the United States over our first 24 years as a national food drive. Please help us in our fight to end hunger, as we celebrate our 25th anniversary year in America’s great day of giving. We’re proud of this food drive and the immediate help it brings to our local food pantries. We’re asking residents for their support to help make this another successful food drive. To participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable food items such as canned soup, canned vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on May 13. Letter Carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver your mail and take them to local food pantries. One hundred percent of the food collected in each community will be donated to a local food pantry. NALC Branch 888 President Ronnie Roush

I won’t lie. I’m extremely nervous right now. My husband Doo made me sign up for a stupid triathlon, and while humor it seemed like a great idea back in January, with the race just hours away, I feel like my bowels are in full revolt. And the weird thing is, this is not my first one. Nor my second. So why is my adrenaline kicking in like I woke up to a zombie apocalypse? For sure, some of the nerves can be attributed to my competitive nature. I told Doo several years ago that he will never beat me because, unlike him, I am willing to die before I lose to someone I shouldn’t. I’m not kidding. I call it “athletic brinkmanship,” and I am deeply committed to its tactics. Blister? Ignore it. Dehydrated? Keep going. Signs of heat stroke? Suck. It. Up. Triathlons in particular are as much a mental game as physical, and compared to moms, men simply can’t get close. Advantage, me. And my man only recently gave up smoking and became a “runner,” which means unless I am struck down with a stomach bug, he’s not going to finish ahead of me (actually, that happened once and I still beat him!). But he’s been training hard, ran a marathon in the fall and is a much better biker than me. I hate to admit it, but I think he has a chance today. And I don’t really want to die, especially not in a swim suit/bike short hybrid. So now the question is, if Doo can do it today, can I rise above my arrogance and smack talk and truly be happy for all that he’s accomplished? Can I be the gracious good loser and celebrate his success? I like to think I can, but I’m not entirely positive. And that has me worried. Much more than running this stupid triathlon. Ugh. I need a toilet. Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a contributing columnist. You may email her at danielle@ currentincarmel.com.

Stinging commentary Commentary by Dick Wolfsie The newest edition of the “Hammacher Schlemmer” gift catalog is packed with previously advertised items humor they still can’t unload (which I have probably made fun of in past columns) along with some brand new items I am about to skewer. This spring’s catalog cover features a Hypnotic Jellyfish Aquarium. It contains “two synthetic jellyfish that provide mesmerizing ambience.” That doesn’t seem like it would be soothing. Live jellyfish use their tentacles to defend against predators by emitting deadly toxins in a painful sting. Maybe they used leftover copy for last year’s flop, the Teddy Bear Aquarium. The customary introductory letter from their chairman, John McArthur, welcomes you to his world of unique products. Although Mr. McArthur does not have a gift for writing, he makes up for it with about 200 gifts in other areas, like inside the magazine. Hammacher reveals its obsession with mosquitos by offering seven items specifically for the purpose of avoiding bug bites, including the Mosquito Defeating Sports Chair ($79.95).

An attractive couple sits next to each other in their respective chairs, enclosed head-to-toe in netting. HS apparently borrowed this sexy marketing idea from the Cialis commercials. Not nearly as romantic as side-by-side outdoor bathtubs, but it does make a lot more sense than outdoor bathtubs. On a positive note, wearing protection always sets a good example. If you need a gift for the dog that has everything, the Anti Ant Moated Bowl stops invasions of “kibble-craving ants.” The bowl has a moat surrounding the food. What a waste of money! It takes most dogs less than 20 seconds to snarf down their meals. Even if ants had cellphones, they couldn’t spread the word that fast. Finally, The Suction-Powered Sinus Decongestor, which removes congestion by flushing a saline rinse through one nostril, then out the other. It’s perfect for anyone with breathing problems. It could also be used to drown ants.

Mad Duck promotes local fishing By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com

Let history be a part of your special event at Lindley Farmstead, a beautifully restored 1834 classic barn

Westfield isn’t home to any large lakes, but Greg Evans said there are plenty of spots to fish within city new biz limits. The Westfield resident opened Mad Duck Outdoor Sports at the Union, 136 N. Union St., in February, but he expects business to pick up with warmer temperatues on the way. “My dad introduced me (to fishing) when I was very young, and I just fell in love with it,” Evans said. “It was an automatic for me. My desire to fish surpassed any other desire I had in life. Growing up, I would ride my bike 5 miles to Geist Reservoir and wade around the reservoir fishing.” As for local opportunities, Evans said residents may be closer to where the fish are than they realize. “Probably 75 percent of homes in the Westfield area are around a retention pond that has some sort of fish they can catch,” he said. “Westfield and Carmel parks systems have lakes and rivers and ponds that you can fish in. You can venture out further to any of the natural lakes. Indiana is full of opportunity for bank or boat fishing.”

Greg Evans, an avid angler, opened a fishing business in Westfield. (Submitted photo)

Mad Duck Outdoor Sports sells hunting and fishing supplies, excluding guns and ammo. In addition to sales, Evans said one of his missions is to plant a love for fishing in kids. “We are trying to bring retail fishing products to Westfield families, and also we are going to try to create a desire for kids to fish,” he said. “That’s the goal, to try to make people fish more than they do now.” An open house grand opening celebration is scheduled for May 20. Guest speakers will present on family fishing tips as well as tournament information. To preregister, send names, ages and fishing skill of participants to madduckoutdoorsports@ gmail.com.

The new owner of For the Dogs is a dog person, but she especially loves small dogs. “Part of the new ownership reason I wanted a (dog) day care (is because) I wasn’t going on vacation, I wasn’t going anywhere because I didn’t have a place to leave my small dog,” Sharra Christine said. For the past year she had been trying to establish a business in Westfield, receiving advice from the previous owner of For the Dogs. Every time she found a potential property, something prevented the deal from being finalized. Then, as Christine was beginning to doubt the path, the former owner called and said he needed to sell the business and wanted her to buy it. She was initially unsure since she had recently built a house in Westfield, but after spending a few weeks with the dogs she fell in love. Previous customers won’t notice any changes apart from a few new employees. The cage-free facility provides dog day care

Kanagaroo-a-thon hops back

Dispatches

By Desiree Williams news@currentinwestfield.com

Kanagroo-a-thon will return for its second year in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health North Hospital awareness in Carmel. Kangaroo care is a method that involves skin-to-skin contact. Parents hold their child, clothed only in a diaper, against their bare chest with a small blanket covering the child’s back. Kangaroo-a-thon encourages this method by tallying how long families can hold their baby over a two-week period. The goal is to promote awareness of the benefits of skin-to-skin contact and start making those benefits a reality for families in the NICU. Lynn Jenkins, RN, a nurse in the NICU and co-chair of Kangaroo-a-thon, brought the event to the hospital two years ago after hearing about it at an international conference in Florida. “We already encourage skin-to-skin holding, so we wanted to take it over the top with our two weeks of tallying and keeping track of how often they are hold-

ing babies skin-to-skin because of all the positive benefits for the families and the baby,” Jenkins said. Skin-to-skin contact reduces parental stress, increases parent and infant bonding, decreases postpartum depression, improves a child’s sleep cycle which stimulates brain development, increases a child’s weight gain and much more. Last year, the hospital tallied 544 hours of skin-to-skin contact between parents or grandparents. This year’s goal is to reach an average of 3.5 hours per day and to find one family who can hold their baby for 24 hours straight. The contest will last until May 15. For more, visit IUHealth.org.

A snack can save your marriage — Hunger causes people’s glucose levels to drop, so they have less energy and therefore less self-control when it comes to dealing with anger and aggression. Have a snack when you feel your mood dipping. A snack with protein and “slow carbs” - such as a handful of almonds and an apple - will help keep your blood sugar levels stable. Also, wait to discuss a sensitive topic until you are feeling full. Keeping an eye on how hungry you are can go a long way toward keeping your relationships healthy. Source: The Daily Burst. Essay: Mrs. Last Minute By Amanda Schleper, Westfield In the last 10 years alone, my mom has shown how amazing she is because of how unselfishly she has been on call for my energetic family. When your oldest child is 2, and then you have triplets, people run from you screaming. But even after we gave her the stomach flu, my mom never changed her phone number on us. She was the only one brave enough to watch all four of our young children by herself. Not only did she make sure we had time alone as a couple, but she also gave us experiences that our diaper-strained budget couldn’t afford. From fun dates like the NFL Experience during the Super Bowl, to donating travel points for us to take some trips, my mom has given sacrificially to us in more ways than I can count. Who would be brave enough to accept an offer to drive to Florida (with four kids that couldn’t yet read) and two day’s notice? My mom! And who dropped everything to drive more than an hour to the vet to help console my kids (and let’s be honest, me) when we had to put

our first dog to sleep? My mom! Who was there today to rescue me at the last minute when we had two kids with ballgames at the same time, a kid with his fourth concussion and a roofer coming over to fix a leak? My mom! There are so many things I look back and marvel at how we even survived (cancer, car accidents and finishing our basement, to name a few), but knowing my mom was always there for us saved our sanity. Thank you, Mom, for being there for us through all the giggles and tears. I love you so much! Happy Mother’s Day!

Why my mom is amazing

Original Etchings, Drawings, Tapestries, Linocuts & Lithographs by Dali, Picasso & Miro will be available for purchase

By Kayla Hopp, age 10, Westfield My mom is amazing. She is the best mom EVER! She is fun, good at baking, and sometimes coaches my sports! These are some reasons why I, Kayla H., love her very much. My mom is sooo fun. She plays with me, talks with me, and loves me! Mom is really funny. She has a great sense of humor. We talk about things together and joke around. She helps me with things that I don’t know or can’t do yet. I enjoy doing puzzles, cooking, talking, and just hanging out with her! Mom is SUCH a great cook! She makes the best desserts I’ve ever tasted! She is teaching me how to cook, and I enjoy cooking with her. My mom makes it so fun to bake/cook. She lets me crack eggs, stir, measure flour and sugar, and much more! She once made homemade mac-n-cheese, and it was sooo flavorful and good! She is the best cook ever, and she doesn’t even brag about it! My mom loves me and takes care of me. She brings me to school every day, packs our lunch packs, and fills our water bottles! Mom saves our family’s money by getting

things on good sales and gets whatever coupons she can. She finds good flights so we can go on cool trips. Mom really loves me, I can tell. My mom coaches me on some sports. Mom was the head coach of volleyball for my team during the winter. She helped me get my overhand serve over from the back line. Mom sometimes helps me with swimming during the summer when we are at the pool playing. My mom is the most amazing and fun mom ever! There are many reasons why she is the best, and these are just a few. Fun fact — I look just like my mom when she was a child! I hope you have a mom as good as my mom!

Commentary by Amy Pauszek Artistic Director for the Center for the Performing Arts and founder of the Great American Songbook Foundation Michael Feinstein stopped by to open Actors Theatre of Indiana’s production of “Beyond the Rainbow.” What a treat it was for the cast, crew and guests to have him stop by and give kudos for the hottest ticket in town directed by ATI’s own Don Farrell. The multitalented cast includes three actresses who play various stages of Judy Garland, along with the people who were part of her journey and path to stardom. ATI favorite Katy Gentry, who originated the role of Judy in ATI’s 2007 premiere, 2010 Songbook Ambassador superstar Annie Yokom and the sen-

sational young actress Anjali Rooney came alive with their brilliant acting, singing and mannerisms of the late Garland. Roger Ortman, Dave Ruark and Grace Sell also play multiple roles in the show, so it’s fun to see them shine. Everything about this show is spectacular. The songs, the glitz and story make this production a must-see. Warning: If you happen to spot Where’s Amy singing and skipping around town belting out the hits and songs of Judy Garland, don’t blame me, blame ATI for bringing back the iconic Judy Garland. Grab those ruby red slippers and let’s “Get Happy” together above and “Beyond the Rainbow.” Do not miss this show. Be sure to get your tickets today and be ready for the magic. Blueprint for Improvement: two-story master suite addition Commentary by Larry Greene

After solutions:

After

The goal was to design a two-story addition with a master suite on the main level and a large craft room below. 1. The 360-degree proportions and materials of the home were studied to ensure the new addition looked original to the home. 2. The new master suite connected through the existing library, giving an extra layer of privacy. This retreat included a large bedroom, walk-in closet and wheelchair-accessible bathroom. 3. Master bath amenities included a roll-in shower and a double-sink vanity with lower convenience outlets. 4. Carefully selected finishes reflect the warm color palette of the rest of the home, with stained trimwork, stone textures in the tile and hardwood flooring. 5. A fun, highly functional craft room was designed in the lower part of the addition and connected to the existing basement.

Before Background Info: These owners needed a design solution to age in place in their 1990s home in the Claybridge neighborhood of Carmel.

Before problems: Although they cherished their existing home and neighborhood, these owners were faced with the tough decision to move or make their home work for aging in place. Thinking long-term, their decision led them to a design for their home that created a much-needed master suite on the main level to avoid the many stairs that provided access to all of the original bedrooms.

Agra Fort and its harem Commentary by Don Knebel

Estimates of the number of women in Shah Jahan’s harem range from 200 to several thousand, guarded by eunuchs and managed by the emperor’s mother. Members of the harem were expected not only to provide sexual favors to Shah Jahan on demand, but to sing and dance for his pleasure. Shah Jahan also reportedly used members of his harem as pawns on a huge Parcheesi board constructed near his chamber, where he moved the pieces while sitting under a canopy. Despite the many women in his harem, Shah Jahan was devoted to Mumtaz. When she died during the birth of her 14th child in 19 years, he built the Taj Mahal as her tomb, located along the Yamuna River and visible from a room in the Musamman Burj.

Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan is best known for having built the Taj Mahal to honor his wife. The nearby travel Agra Fort shows that she was not his only source of companionship. In 1628, Shah Jahan became the fifth Mughal Emperor, controlling much of the Indian subcontinent from his capital in Agra. Soon after assuming the throne, Shah Jahan renovated a walled fort that had been built by his grandfather, Akbar the Great, on a 100-acre site along the west bank of the Yamuna River. Shah Jahan replaced many of the red sandstone structures with more ornate ones made of white marble. He built the lavish Khas Mahal to serve as his sleeping chamber.
