Local business owner wants to buy Grand Park By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Andy Card, who owns and operates Fishers-based Card & Associates, is interested in purchasing Grand DEVELOPMENT Park. The Westfield Redevelopment Commission issued a request for proposals March 3 seeking a buyer for Grand Park or for someone to enter into a public-private partnership for park operation. ProposCard als are due June 22. Sixteen companies have submitted an intent to issue a proposal, one of which is Card & Associates. Other Westfield-related proposals have been submitted by Bullpen Ventures and Legacy Sports Group. Legacy Sports Group is owned by former Grand Park director William Knox. Bullpen Ventures declined to comment. Knox has agreed to an interview with Current but because of scheduling conflicts, a time has not been arranged as of press time. Proposals have also been submitted from California and Florida. Card & Associates is the parent company of several sports operations and management companies, including one that owns and operates the Pacers Athletic Center at Grand Park. “My approach is to buy it and then operate it through our operations and management company,” Card said. “The city has done a great job, but I don’t think in today’s environment you could build Grand Park again. I think, in my opinion, the city is ready for somebody to come in and take it to the next step.” Card declined to say how much he’s willing to pay for Grand Park. According to a presentation by the Westfield City Council’s finance committee, Grand Park has an estimated net worth of $200 million. Card & Associates also owns Mojo Up Sports Complex in Noblesville and several other athletic facilities in Indiana. Card said Card & Associates will own 10 more facilities in Indiana by 2024. “This is what we do and all we do. We find land and work with the local community, and we do public-private partnerships with them,” Card said. “We do development, financing, construction and design, and then we stay and operate (the business). We are very unique in what we do. Most of the folks bidding (for Grand Park) that I can

tell are either managers or operators. They don’t necessarily own brick-and-mortar. “What I can tell is, we are pretty unique in the overall group.” Card said if Card & Associates is selected through the RFP process, the company would build off the success of the Pacers Athletic Center, which hosts national tournaments such as the Nike EYBL, the Under Armour Association Championship, Adidas 3SSB, the USA Basketball U.S. Open Championship and the Jr. NBA Midwest Regional Championship. Card said if his proposal is accepted, he wants to offer more events at the Grand Park Events Center, such as concerts, baseball card shows, retro tennis shoe sales, antique shows and car shows. Card said he also would like to expand Grand Park’s sports side. He envisions baseball stadiums and more sports facilities if his proposal is accepted. “I believe to make Grand Park everything it can be, I think it needs to be managed and owned by local ownership. I have a big asset in Grand Park already,” Card said. “I’m already vested in Westfield, and I have a lot of reasons to make sure Grand Park becomes everything it can be as a local operator. We care about Westfield, and Grand
Park is the key to Westfield’s future. “Local ownership is going to get Grand Park to be the best it can be. That’s why I want to buy it. I can expand on the great job the city has already done.” Card entered the sports operations business when his sons were in high school and played travel basketball. He noticed some facilities were state-of-the-art and others lacked basic comforts such as air conditioning. “I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this has to be a business.’ I could see the synergies of being able to have huge facilities with multiple courts and turf fields inside, so you don’t have to succumb to the weather, the heat and all those types of things,” Card said. “This has to be a viable business.” Card eventually came up with a business plan and worked with Grand Park staff and built the Pacers Athletic Center, previously known as Jonathan Byrd’s Fieldhouse, in 2015. “And here we are, a nationally recognized company and really a leader in operations,” Card said. “Our expertise is operations. It’s what we do the best out of everything we do. Our facilities are beautiful. They’re big, but our operations are so good that has been the key to our success.”

Enjoying retirement after back surgery Patient describes life after surgery at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital George Frampton recalls when his back pain started affecting his everyday life. He said he would often walk around with his co-workers during lunch but struggled to keep up. And at his daughter’s wedding, he said he had trouble standing while his family posed for photos. “I was very debilitated,” said George. “Over time, I was working and walking stooped over. I felt like I was becoming a spectacle.” At his doctor’s recommendation, and with much thought by himself and his wife, Chris, George underwent spinal reconstruction surgery at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital. George said he was extremely pleased with the personalized care he received. George said he is now able to stand upright and is enjoying retirement with his wife.
“My wife and I drove to Florida, and I was able to do a lot of things that I probably could never have done before the surgery,” said George. “When patients have gotten to the point where nothing else is cutting it, including injections, physical therapy and bracing, it may be the right time to have a discussion with your doctor about surgery,” said John DePowell, MD, a neurosurgeon specializing in the treatment of complex spinal disorders. If you are experiencing back or neck pain that prevents you from doing the things you enjoy, now is the time to have a discussion with your doctor. Neurosurgeons at Ascension St. Vincent offer a range of spine surgery options — from minimally invasive to more advanced. Take the next step to living with less pain.
“The nurses and doctors interacted so well with both me and my wife, and included her in all conversations.”

ZCHS pitcher’s competitive fire translates into success By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Community High School senior right-hander Drew Dickson’s fastball has been clocked at 91 mph. However, speed is not the Northwestern University-bound pitcher’s biggest strength. “My biggest strength on the mound is probably a coin flip between the ability to spin breaking balls and my competitiveness,” Dickson said. “I was recruited heavily because of my ability to spin two distinct breaking pitches, a curveball and a slider, and command them very well. One thing that stands out is that the spin rate (revolutions per minute) is very high, around 3,000, which makes them break tighter and closer to the plate. My competitiveness is arguably more important, though. When the game gets bigger and pressure rises, so does my ability. “I have had a lot of success in big situations and leaving runners on in tight games. The mental toughness I have is what allows me to compete at a high level.” The 6-foot-3 Dickson said he has made

Dickson said it helps that the Eagles have an experienced and knowledgable pitching coach in Drew Storen, who pitched eight Major League Baseball seasons after a standout career at Brownsburg High School and Stanford University.

“(Storen) has helped me tremendously in the mental game of pitching, learning what to throw when, and where to throw it as well,” Dickson said. “I have also made some big strides in leadership. Last year, we had two vocal leaders and they both graduated, so it was my turn to step up and assume
that role, and the coaching staff has let me know how impactful my leadership has been.” As of May 10, Dickson had a 2-1 record with a 1.30 earned run average and 46 strikeouts in 31 innings. He was 7-0 with a 1.46 ERA in 2021. “He has a bulldog mentality on the mound,” Eagles coach Jered Moore said. “He’s probably one of the smartest baseball players I’ve ever coached.” Dickson said he tried to hit last season but didn’t have much success. “We had a pretty talented lineup last season, and I didn’t make the most of the few opportunities I got,” he said. “I am not hitting next year at Northwestern, so I felt it was more important to devote my time to pitching this year, so I didn’t work on hitting really at all until the midway point in our season. “ “Thankfully, it has helped quite a bit and I have gotten off to a pretty fast start.” As of May 10, Dickson was hitting .417. Dickson, who played three seasons for the Indiana Bulls travel team, plans to major in economics and minor in software engineering.

Westfield High School student team wins regional Innovate WithIN competition with Tutor Us app By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Westfield High School students Liam Lloyd and Alexa Jimenez got their first taste of entrepreneurism when they had a problem and wanted to find a way to solve it. They recently developed an app called Tutor Us to assist high school students with tutoring. The creation won the Innovate WithIN regional competition pitch and will proceed to the June 10 state finals. Lloyd and Jiminez are students in WHS teacher John Moore’s entrepreneurship class. One of the class projects was to create a business plan. Lloyd, who had recently moved to the U.S. from Mexico, needed help finding a tutor. Lloyd knew basic English, and although he was always an exceptional student in Mexico, the language barrier proved difficult in the U.S. “English was tough for me,” Lloyd said. Lloyd, a junior, saw that WHS National Honors Society students had a tutoring program, but when he tried to find a tutor, it took two weeks to schedule a session. “So, that wasn’t really working,” he said. For their entrepreneurship project, Lloyd Tutor Us connects students needing school help with student tutors at the same school. (Photo by Anna Skinner)

and Jiminez, a sophomre, decided to create an app that would connect students with tutors. Jiminez partnered with Lloyd on the project because she had difficulty finding a tutor when she needed help with coursework when the school was on hybrid schedule during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The students started creating the app earlier this year and are still developing it. “It’s an app that works within high school educational systems,” Lloyd said. “The high school subscribes to
the app, which helps students find tutors, but the tutors are also students from the same high school. So, if I need help with algebra, I go into the app and tutors appear.” Jiminez said the app is free for students. Tutors are National Honors Society students. “The form of payment would be their service hours,” Lloyd said. In the entrepreneurship class, Lloyd and Jiminez took the project to the next level. “They identified a good problem, and in entrepreneurship, that’s the first thing we look at is a problem and a solution,” Moore said. “They did market research and realized this is a real problem. A lot of students have good ideas but they don’t like to put the work in. Liam and Alexa absolutely put the work in to get this where it’s going.” Moore saw Tutor Us’s potential and encouraged the students to submit it for the Westfield Chamber of Commerce Shark Tank competition. The students won the competition and $1,500 for their business, which they plan to use to pay app programmers. Lloyd and Jiminez then competed in The
STARTedUP Foundation’s Innovate WithIN regional pitch competition with 73 other teams. To their surprise, they won the regional pitch April 21. Lloyd and Jiminez will compete in the June 10 Innovate WithIN state finals at Butler University. The winner of the state competition will receive $25,000 in seed funding to build their business, $10,000 each toward a 529 education funding plan and a $6,000 once-in-a-lifetime entrepreneurial travel experience. Regardless if Lloyd and Jiminez win state, they still plan to launch their app. They hope to start with Westfield Washington Schools. “We are talking to the Westfield school board because we want to sell it here first and use Wesfield as a prototype to make sure it works well and students like it,” Lloyd said. “Once we get it working in Westfield, we want to make it active in all of Hamilton County and then move on from there.” Jiminez and Lloyd also met with 2021 WHS graduate Zach Watson, who developed the SchoolCore app. SchoolCore helps WHS students with their CORE scheduling. CORE stands for connections, opportunity, remediation and enrichment. Lloyd and Jiminez learned about Watson’s process to help with their process for Tutor Us. ON THE COVER: Alexa Jiminez and Liam Lloyd are the creators of the Tutor Us app. (Photo by Anna Skinner)
WHAT’S NEXT Since Westfield High School student Liam Lloyd and Alexa Jiminez won the regional Innovate WithIN competition, Jiminez, a sophomore, said colleges are already reaching out to her to learn of her plans for further education. Jiminez is undecided about where to attend college, but she wants to major in psychology. Lloyd, a junior, wants to major in business and economics. He wants to attend Notre Dame University and play soccer for the Irish.

The emails flow in, demanding that we must act fast lest the benefits we earned by customer loyalty will expire. Do we intend to abandon our effort? Was it easy to stand in line at the favored merchant when there was no line at another? We’ve paid a few cents more to stay loyal to the vendor that incessantly reminds us of their appreciation of our commitment, so shouldn’t we reap the promised profit? Since the beginning of the human experience, we have come to know that it is good to have friends. In fact, it is imperative. Killing a mastodon by oneself is a bit more difficult than the almost impossible task of doing it in a group. So, shouldn’t our dedication to the people who fly our planes, make our pizzas, fit our shoes and prepare our deli sandwiches bring some reciprocal value? A Seinfeld episode, “The Strike,” explored our obsession with fully stamped loyalty cards as Elaine gives hers away accidentally and spends days attempting to regain it. Sure, a free pastrami on rye is good, but how good? Is its care and feeding of greater value than the card itself? Whether it is United’s PlusPoints or Microsoft’s Rewards, who is benefiting from the effort? How many of us have seen an incentive bestowed? How much do the providers really want us to be rewarded? Like some grotesque P.T. Barnum, they seem to gloat that there is a “sucker born every minute” and that they are only too happy to take advantage. Are we playing the fool? Set up like the adult version of a corrupt carnival game, they promise big and then fortify against paying out. A few giant stuffed animals are paraded around the fairgrounds to get people motivated, but can we win one ourselves?
Son of a biscuit. I have COVID-19. I know! I made it more than two years of the pandemic surrounded by germy teenagers with nary a sniffle and yet, here I am. Moaning and groaning on my couch, pounding Advil-Schwepps cocktails, and wondering what the heck happened. I’m vaccinated and boosted and, apart from my stupid shoulder and occasional incontinence, basically invincible. This wasn’t in my spring 2022 script! And now I’m missing all sorts of big stuff — my oldest’s graduation, my youngest’s prom and my 36th eighthgrade reunion, which I was super pumped about. We only graduated with 18 kids in our class, and most I haven’t seen since the late ’80s. Does Kelly still have bangs? What happened to Creighton and Jonathan and Jenny D? Who remembers the boys urinating on the side of the second-grade classroom that one day during recess? Good times. My quarantine is also occurring during the last month of school, which any educator will tell you are the absolute worst weeks to be gone. Final projects, make-up work and end-of-theyear paraphernalia don’t always proceed smoothly when I’m there, let alone with substitutes. Ugh! Who did this to me? Probably a student, but maybe someone from my scuba class. I was, after all, sharing respirator spit with a veritable stranger for several hours. Or more likely, it was the universe, recognizing that if I wasn’t going to clear my over-scheduled and anxiety-provoking May calendar, she certainly would. The mystery will probably never be solved, and I suppose in the end, it doesn’t really matter My name is Danielle, and I have COVID-19. Son of a biscuit. Peace out.

Editor, I have faithfully served the City of Westfield for decades as the city’s elected clerk-treasurer. One of the most important duties of my elected office is safeguarding the city’s finances. Critical to the discharge of this important duty is maintaining the security and integrity of the data systems. To be clear, I have never opposed the administration’s ability to see and use the city’s financial data and information for the benefit of the city. This includes complying with the mayor’s financial review and providing information and documents to his self-appointed review team. I continued this cooperation even when it became clear that a primary purpose of the financial review team was to undermine public confidence in my office. What I cannot abide is any person outside my office having the ability to manipulate or alter financial data through the granting of administrator-level access into our systems. This is true whether it is Mayor (Andy) Cook himself, his appointees, which includes city IT personnel or non-city third parties, that desire such access. An administration employee conducted a raid of my office in July 2021 in an effort to stop my investigation into remote access software found on all the clerk-treasurer’s computers. Search warrants were executed against administration employees. Cindy Gossard, Westfield clerk-treasurer

ThriveFit rebrands as Legacy Athletics By Les Morris news@currentinwestfield.com Will Ramey now owns a CrossFit gym and is a coach, but he’s aware not everyone sees the activity as positive. FITNESS And he wants to change that. “One of the negative vibes about CrossFit is people get injured and that’s because of poor coaching,” Ramey said. Ramey will have ample opportunity to change perceptions at his newly renamed Legacy Athletics, formerly known as ThriveFit, at 400 Alpha Dr. in Westfield. “(Good coaching) looks at the member and meets them where they’re at and not just throwing them in a class,” Ramey said. “We want to understand the members’ goals and help them achieve those goals.” For Ramey, 30, it has been an interesting path to owning Legacy Athletics. Two years ago, after sales successes in other industries, he was brought in as a partner at Legacy Insurance Enterprises, an insurance company with products in personal, commercial and life insurance. The insurance business gave him more

time to explore his passions, which included CrossFit. He quickly started working out in his home gym but wanted to become more competitive, so he joined ThriveFit in February 2021. He loved it and began coaching there last summer. By October, he learned the facility was for sale and, after a few false starts, purchased the assets and rebranded as Legacy Athletics Feb. 1. His approach seems to be working. Ramey said Legacy Athletics has added 40 new memberships in the last three months.
Three different classes are offered. Legacy 60 is the core 60-minute performance class that includes barbell strength and technique training; Legacy 30 is a 30-minute workout consisting of cardio and endurance movements for all fitness levels; and Legacy Barbell is a 60-minute barbell program for competitive weightlifters and those who want to simply improve their technique. The staff includes four career coaches. A grand reopening event was held at the facility April 30.
DISPATCHES Stocks benefit from cancer test breakthroughs — Amid the race to develop coronavirus tests, vaccines and treatments, many investors might overlook another realm of impressive medical breakthroughs. Molecular diagnostic firms are developing innovative blood tests that can detect many forms of cancer. Over the next decade, the diagnostics market is expected to soar to more than $50 billion annually. Three promising companies are: Exact Sciences (EXAS) had nearly $900 million in total revenues last year, mostly from two products — Cologuard, an alternative to colonoscopies that screens stool samples for colon cancer, and Oncotype Dx, a genomic test that can predict which women with early-stage breast cancer will not benefit from chemotherapy. Guardant Health (GH) makes liquid biopsy kits that test for mutations in the tumors of advanced cancer patients to enable proper therapy selection. Natera (NTRA) tests monitor for relapses in breast and lung cancer and can identify recurrent tumors months before traditional methods such as CT scans. Source: BottomLineInc

DISPATCH Tea might reduce breast cancer risk — Making smart choices about your diet can go a long way toward lowering your risk of breast cancer. Now it looks like choosing the right beverage can also help. Women who sip green or oolong tea may be able to gain extra breast cancer protection, according to a study published in the journal Anticancer Research. Researchers at St. Louis University in Missouri, led by Chunfa Huang, Ph.D., an associate research professor in
the department of internal medicine, tested extracts of various teas against several types of breast cancer cells. Huang included extracts from green, oolong, black and other dark teas. His results indicated that green and oolong teas could stop the growth of breast cancer cells; the two types of tea worked equally well against all the cell lines Huang tested. Black and other dark teas had no effect, he said. Source: Msn.com

Chemisty helps Roughouse develop as a band By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com For Randy Schumacher, there is a reason why Roughouse clicks as a band. “We have great chemisMUSIC try and great friendships,” Schumacher said. “That’s really important to this band. When we went looking for a bass guitarist, it was important for find someone who fit it. The bass guitarist has changed a number of times. We had one bass guitarist who exploded in the middle of practice. We played the wrong song and he spontaneously combusted. He packed up his stuff and stormed out. The friendships and laughter (are) amazing.” Schumacher, an architect by day and guitarist by night, said he remembers a tipsy musician in the Slippery Noodle audience one night who said he liked the band because it played like a team. “He said it like three times,” said Schumacher, who previously lived in Noblesville but now lives in Carmel. “But he was right, we really do.” Drummer A.J. DeRose, who basically serves as a team manager, said the band started as a few friends jamming in his Noblesville basement, where it still practices. “We got to together and played some songs,” DeRose said. “We had some musicians rotating in and out. It was real loose. Somewhere along the way, we wanted to do more than play in a basement.” DeRose’s wife, Molly, was in another band but joined her husband’s band three years ago. From there, it took off. Molly’s sister, Emily Di Rosa, also a Noblesville resident, joined as a second vocalist. Emily and her husband, Matteo Di Rosa, opened Matteo’s Ristorante Italiano in 2003 in Noblesville. Kelli Ray Yates, a Carmel High School graduate who now lives in Noblesville, recently joined as a third vocalist. “We’ve ended up now with a solid lineup that I don’t think is going to change,” DeRose said. “There are times when we contract a little bit because of people’s travel schedules.” Jim Corner, an Indianapolis resident,

plays bass guitar. He said the band has fun but practices seriously. “All of us have interesting backgrounds,” DeRose said. “I played in several alternative rock and classic rock bands. We’re doing classical rock, but we also do bluesy stuff.” DeRose said Corner and Erik Harlow, a guitarist and Noblesville resident, also have backgrounds playing the blues. “It’s been catching on. A number of pieces on the classic rock side get people up dancing,” DeRose said. Molly and Emily have musical backgrounds having been in show choir at Pike High School in Indianapolis. “Our mom is a musician,” Molly said. “She used to write commercial jingles for TV and radio. We grew up around music and in the studio. We’ve been singing together forever.” Yates is a singer-songwriter who performed solo acoustic sets. “We asked Kelli to join a year ago and our voices blend well,” Molly said. “We all have jobs and families. We do this because we all love to do it. You make a little money, of course, but, for the most part, you
do it because you love to do it.” Roughouse is playing different venues such as Ale Emporium and Wolfies Geist, along with some outdoor events. Roughouse will play July 7 at Dillion Park as part of the Thursday night concert series and will play July 22 at Daniel’s Vineyard’s concert series in McCordsville. “We have a private show at the Palladium (in Carmel) we’re excited about,” DeRose said. “We doubled the amount of shows we had on the books from last year. We do all covers. That’s the market and the target we’re going have. When folks want to hear a bar band, they want to hear their songs done well. We pick songs that feature our strengths and roll with it.” Schumacher said the band is earning respect. “We’re competing for gigs with bands that have been together eight or nine years,” Schumacher said. DeRose said the band will play at Federal Hill Commons in Noblesville for the third consecutive summer. For more, visit Roughouse Indy page on Facebook and Instagram.

Blueprint for Improvement: Luxurious bath update Commentary by Larry Greene
After
This stunning historic loft in the Old Northside neighborhood featured a primary bath without a bathtub — a must-have for these homeowners. We transformed the space, making room for a soaking tub and creating a tranquil retreat with updated style.
Before
THE BLUEPRINT • Distinct yet simple geometric patterns featuring a neutral palette create an impressive visual balance. • Chic champagne bronze finishes bring warmth that balances the cool vanity and tile tones. • Painted maple vanity cabinets and quartz countertops ensure durability. • The soaking tub and statement Moravian star light fixture create a beautiful focal point that draws in the eye.

ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS An exhibit inside the Falls of the Ohio State Park Interpretive Center. (Photo by Don Knebel)
A visit to Falls of the Ohio Commentary by Don Knebel Few places in the world allow visitors to observe the results of 390 million years of natural and human history. TRAVEL Falls of the Ohio State Park, about 112 miles south of Indianapolis in Clarksville, is such a place. About 390 million years ago, during the Devonian Period of geologic history, most of the continents were in the southern hemisphere. What is now Indiana was about 30 degrees south of the equator on Euramerica, much of it covered by a warm, shallow sea. During this period, a number of sea animals first came into existence. As these animals died, their remains fossilized in the seabed. As the tectonic plates gradually shifted, Euramerica moved north and eventually became Europe and North America. Starting a few million years ago, melting glaciers created the Ohio River from what had once been the Teays River system and exposed what had once been a Euramerica seabed north of the river. That seabed, along the bank of the Ohio River in Clarksville, includes the largest exposed body of Devonian fossils in the world. Scientists have identified about 600 species of sea animals in the fossil bed, including trilobites, an extinct arthropod, hinged-shelled brachiopods, and crinoids resembling a starfish on a stalk. Today, the fossil bed is part of the Falls of the Ohio State Park. The park’s 3,000-square-feet interpretative center includes interactive exhibits telling the story of the fossil bed and the geologic and human history of the Ohio River basin. Visitors are encouraged to walk in the fossil bed and try to identify any fossils they find.

Some extraordinary fossil examples are displayed at the entry to the interpretative center. Falls of the Ohio State Park also includes sites important to the American Revolution and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which we will talk about next week.
