Commissioners, councilors speak at breakfast By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com On May 12, the last legislative breakfast for the spring season was held at Conner Prairie in Fishers. The program was different than previous breakfasts, as county it focused on county government and attendees heard from county commissioners and county council members on how government works as well as upcoming projects. Former Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter introduced the three commissioners and three present county council members for the program. Commissioners’ roles include dealing with county property. They deal with construction and maintenance of roads, economic development programs and identifying benefit policies and leave for county employees and more. County council is the fiscal body and deals with fiscal matters, approving annual operating budgets for all county government offices, establishing county officials’ salaries, fixing tax rates and more. Commissioners Mark Heirbrandt, Steve Dillinger and Christine Altman presented first. The commissioners brought up current Ind. 37 construction as the first issue. “We are not sure which intersection will be done first, but we will continue to work with the state and other cities to continue this effort and take this up to (Ind.) 32 and finish this corridor,” Heirbrandt said. “It will look similar to what you have on Keystone.” Another project the commissioners spoke on was the jail expansion and jail overcrowding. “We are expanding the judicial center

because of change in demographics and an expected change in population,” Altman said. “It is projected that Hamilton County will double its population by 2050, and we have to plan for that and have infrastructure in place. Unfortunately, as cities and towns age and populations change, we forecast our criminal population will probably increase exponentially. Right now, we have the county jail and a correctional campus, and we have hired experts to review the footprint of that. We are going to try to maximize the extent of that footprint.” Other projects discussed were improving Pleasant Street in Noblesville, the Riverwalk project in Noblesville, Riverview Health’s expansion to its Westfield campus and creating a thoroughfare from Interstate 65 to Interstate 69 via 146th Street. After the commissioners presented, council members Fred Glynn, Brad Beaver and Rick Ayers presented on their duties and which projects they agreed on with the
commissioners. “We have to take a look at this stuff from a financial perspective,” Glynn said. “We don’t legislate at all. Duties to do that are exclusive to them but ours are also exclusive to us. We know what we have in the bank will not last forever. We have to make decisions that are prudent for the long-term fiscal health of the county government. One thing we agree on is jail expansion. There is some disagreement there with how far we go with it. There is a strong consensus between council and commissioners that project needs to be done. The projects you see, the commissioners propose them all and the ones we approve we feel are in the best interest of the county.” The council and commissioners encouraged the public to become involved in local government. “We don’t have many people engaged in local government,” Glynn said. “We could have a major project and I’ll get two emails on it. Send us an email.”

Program gives hands-on lesson By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurremt.com Westfield Middle School eighth-grader Cyle Ginsberg found the Civic Mirror project an effective way to learn education about how governments run. “It’s a lot more involved than reading from a textbook and doing homework,” Ginsberg said. “It’s a lot easier to learn from actually doing something than reading about it.” Ginsberg was in Stephanie Walker’s WMS social studies classes, which uses the Civic Mirror project to teach how government operates. “They turn the students into citizens of a country that they build on their own,” said Walker, who used Civic Mirror for the first time this semester. “The students come out with an actual identity, flag and geography of their country. The government is based on the U.S. Constitution, which is the curriculum for eighth grade.” Walker said the students use budgeting and tax laws. The students elect a senate, house of representatives and a president. “They appoint a judge so they learn about the separation of powers and checks

and balances,” Walker said. “It’s really a microcosm simulation of the United States.” The students also learn about the economics of a nation. Another WMS teacher, Joe Loeffel, has started it in his classes. Lincoln Strong, another of Walker’s students, said he learned more from participating. “It’s more enjoyable than the usual classroom setting, so I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” Strong said. “The best part was how you could compete with your classmates to work to be better than someone else.” For more, visit civicmirror.com.

Westfield senior Gwen Joseph leads male-dominated club By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Gwen Joseph spends her days doing things most women normally wouldn’t dream of, like scaling cover story rock walls without a harness, known as bouldering, and weightlifting with her family. Recently, the Westfield High School senior became the president of the Westfield Rock Climbing Club, which meets Wednesday afternoons at Hoosier Heights in Indianapolis. As club president, Joseph works to make a difference by empowering females. “It’s definitely more male-dominated,” she said of the club. “It’s kind of fun, though, because I’ve done it for two years and I’ve gotten decently good, so it’s kind of fun going and seeing something an older guy can’t do and I can go and do it.” During climbs, club members complete specific problems, or routes. The ranking system for bouldering ranges between V0 and V17. For top-roping, or rock climbing with a harness, the scale is 5.3-5.15. Joseph is at a V5 rating for bouldering and a 5.11 rank for top-roping. Joseph tries to accomplish more than just the next climbing problem, though. Her objectives include attracting other females and underclassmen to a club that was previously dominated by males and older students. It now has approximately 30 students. “I definitely attracted a lot of my female friends to the club, and I think a lot of the other girls in the club feel more comfortable with themselves,” she said. “It’s grown a lot. We have a lot more underclassmen.” In addition to keeping her grade point average at a stellar 4.4 and spending three days a week climbing, Joseph attends Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training three to four days a week. She did so initially for extra soccer training, but she quit soccer after her sophomore year. Now, she attends IFAST with her mom and sister to maintain physical and mental fitness. “I think most women are afraid of

getting too buff. They still want to look feminine,” Joseph said. “You can still be a strong woman and weightlift. I think it’s important for you to have that independence with weightlifting. (Weightlifting at IFAST) helped me develop a lot of connections. When I started going, it was mostly adults, but now a lot more high schoolers go there as well. You gain confidence with social interactions as well as not being shy about working out in front of other people, which I think
join the rock climbing club The club meets at 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays after school at Hoosier Heights in Indianapolis. Meetings typically last two hours, and payment is due for the club at the beginning of each trimester. Westfield High School senior Gwen Joseph serves as club president and encourages students to join, regardless of skill level. “I think it would be good for people to just know it’s for everyone and to know they can do it. You don’t have to be athletic in any way to start doing it,” she said. “I encourage those holding back to consider it.”
women are worried about.” Gwen’s mother, Ann Joseph, raised her daughters to value independence and strength. “Raising strong and healthy women is so important in a world that can be pretty tough. By developing these lifechanging habits at a young age, Gwen’s strength and confidence will assist her in handling future challenges,” she said. “Being mentally and physically strong can give women confidence and tenacity when put in situations that may be challenging.” Gwen isn’t a competititve weightlifter, but trainers have told her she has the potential to become one. She squats between 160 and 170 pounds and deadlifts 150 pounds. Mostly, she uses lifting as a stress reliever “It helps you feel better about yourself,” she said. “It’s also kind of a way to release stress at the end of the day, so if there was something taxing during the day it can help with that.” She also uses rock climbing as a form of stress relief. “I definitely think it’s helped me with stress management because recently I was studying for an (Advanced Place-
ment) chemistry exam and was studying all day,” she said. “I needed a break, so I go climbing, and I’m taking a break and also getting athletic benefits.”
Gwen Joseph said rock climbing can be a stress reliever and also is a healthy form of activity.

Mother’s Day revolt

Commentary by Danielle Wilson
Decisions, decisions Commentary by Terry Anker It is inevitable. Eventually, we are asked to describe what we do. Sometimes, the question comes from a stranger sitting next to us on a plane. Sometimes, it comes from our growing children, just beginning to understand that we have full and complete lives that do not include them. Sometimes, it is a line on a government form. Dentist. Cowboy. Astronaut. Each of these labels seems succinct enough. But do they really tell us, or anybody, what we do? An astronaut rides a rocket ship into space. Right? But are they an adventurer, scientist or pilot? Can they be all? Such is the problem when folks, innocently enough, say to the entrepreneur, “What, exactly, is it that you do?” Well, we build and manage companies. If, one might suppose, an inanimate object can be managed. Maybe said another way, we build and manage people. OK. Experience teaches that much of the entrepreneur’s capacity is consumed by decisions. Certainly, they sell, keep books, clean the floors and all manner of necessary tasks. Yet as a company grows, decision-making may be the singular and exclusive function that cannot be outsourced. The power of choice, in many ways, is liberating. Directions are set and plans are laid. Good. But the responsibility accompanying this authority can be burdensome. Are the decisions the right ones?. With so much at stake, a bit of preparation is warranted, if not required. Then, where do we begin? How do we teach ourselves, our children and our colleagues to value positive choice? One assumes that to be successful, we will need to decide. Quaker Park to get a new makeover Commentary by Erin Murphy Quaker Park in the City of Westfield is a magical place. There are so many options for children of all ages, but in recent years, the park’s age is starting to show. In addition to the basketball court, shelters, connectivity to the Midland Trace Trail, the playground is getting a makeover. The new playground will be expanded. It will feature a large climbing dome, a play area dedicated to children under age 2 and much more. The surface of the renovated playground is a new product that does not generate heat, which means your little ones will not be exposed to more heat when playing on the playground surface. The site also is being expanded to the splash-pad area.
Another section of Quaker Park that is being improved is the splash pad. The water features are being updated to ensure that the equipment works at its best all summer long. The new playground will have features for all ages and will be a great place for residents to meet neighbors, friends and other members of the community. Please join us as we celebrate the new playground at Quaker Park from 4 to 6 p.m. May 26. The celebration will include an airbrush tattoo artist, a magician and a NinjaZone giveaway that your kids will not want to miss. Erin Murphy is the City of Westfield Communications Director. This is not my Mother’s Day. No, I refuse to accept the second Sunday in May as the one day of the year that I am humor to be celebrated. I didn’t vote for it, I don’t like it and so I am calling for a revolution. Moms everywhere, let us unite in strength to reschedule our most precious of days to a time that makes some freakin’ sense. Like a Saturday. In July. Seriously, how is a mother supposed to enjoy herself during one of the busiest months on the calendar? I spent most of May 14th at Warren Central High School suffering through the second day of a dance competition and attempting to grade a gazillion high school papers, only to come home to a house still destroyed from our Derby party and Doo packing his bags for a business trip. Happy Mother’s Day! We hope you enjoy hours of watching faux-lashed tiny tappers, reading Monica Lewinsky short answers, scrubbing borrowed chafing dishes and prepping for the joys of single-parenting! No. Thank. You. Between end-of-school shenanigans, end-of-season tournaments and end-of-May race hoopla, no mother in Indiana has even a free second to take time for herself. That is why I propose July, perhaps the third Saturday. Shops and salons are all open, no one is graduating, the weather is almost guaranteed to be beautiful, and apart from those silly families stupid enough to get involved with baseball, kids’ activities are essentially nonexistent. I wouldn’t even have to feel guilty about skipping church. I could spend an entire day doing whatever I wanted without sacrificing maternal, professional or domestic responsibilities. Let’s make Mother’s Day great again! Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a contributing columnist. You may email her at danielle@ currentincarmel.com.

Spell by numbers Commentary by Dick Wolfsie
Now til May 31st
$500 OFF
There should be a law against having phone numbers that denote words instead of, well, numbers. Hello, it’s a humor phone number, not a phone word. There’s a national organization dedicated to educating people about a serious illness. Their phone number spells the name of the disease. That makes the number easy to remember, but impossible to dial on your cell phone if you are in the car and have to watch the road, balance your coffee and try to figure out where the PQRS button is. While trying to dial this number, I almost ran into an 8733, which is “tree” in touchpad language, in case you haven’t mastered this concept yet. I got so mad I probably said a number I shouldn’t say in mixed company: 3687. Before you go running to your phone to figure this out or call the newspaper to complain that I said some dirty digits, I picked four numbers at random that don’t spell anything, but maybe I better go back and re-check. I wouldn’t want any four-number words in a family newspaper. Suppose I wanted to have a number like I AM DICK. Apparently, those same num-
bers for I AM DICK could spell a lot of other words or letter combinations. Maybe someone else has beaten me to the punch. I went to www.phonespelling.com, where you can see what words your phone number might spell. That’s where I discovered that 426-3425 (I AM DICK) has almost 10,000 additional letter combinations. Here are some they thought were unforgettable: GAN-E-IJC, BN-EH-AL or IC-MFG-BK. See how much simpler it is to remember seven letters than seven numbers? If you are from the planet GAMDIA-5, you’d have snapped this number up eons ago to make it easier for fellow aliens to remember how to reach you. If you enjoyed this column, don’t forget it was written by 3425. But you and I don’t have to be so formal. You can call me 3. On the other hand, if you feel this is a prime example of how I can write the dumbest stuff and still get paid, I think it is fair to say: You’ve got my number.

Where’s Amy felt like a royal guest at the Ballet Theatre of Carmel’s performance of “Cinderella,” choreographed by BTC Artistic Director Jane HachiyaWeiner, Frank Weiner and Sabrina Matheson. The cast was spectacular in bringing this timeless classic to life on stage. Lacey Marsh and DK guest artist Timothy June were brilliantly cast as Cinderella and Prince Charming and stole the hearts of the audience with their beautiful dancing and charm. Stepmother Erica Lohman and her spoiled daughters Emmanuelle and Isabelle Hendrickson were spoton with their wide range of comedic actions and emotions. Other notable characters were the Prince’s Lt. Gabriel Weiner and Fairy Godmother Natalie Heinemeyer, who were both stunning to watch. Bravo to everyone involved! Where’s Amy can’t wait to see you at the next BTC performance. Blueprint for Improvement: Indoor/outdoor living space addition Commentary by Larry Greene
After solutions:
Before Background Info: These owners needed a design/build solution for their home in Zionsville’s The Willows neighborhood to add both indoor and outdoor living space.
The goal was to design an addition with a seamless connection from their new indoor living space to their new outdoor living space. 1. The new structure’s proportions and materials were studied to ensure the new addition looked original to the home. 2. From the existing home, the basement was reworked to create an open foyer with a bridge to connect the two spaces on the main level. Two beautiful French doors from the new bridge allow convenient access to the new exterior patio. The new basement stair connects to the existing basement and to the new basement storage under the addition. 3. Large casement windows, a vaulted ceiling, perimeter accent lighting and durable porcelain tile finished off the living space to maximize daylight and inviting aesthetics.

Although their existing home fit most of the needs of their family, these owners were still missing additional living space and also a natural connection to their expansive back yard to enjoy the beautiful weather. SPONSORED IN PART BY:

A distinctive minaret in Marrakesh, Morocco, demonstrates the lasting influence of 12th century Islamic travel architecture. Its name reflects the lasting influence of 12th century Islamic learning. Marrakesh was founded in 1062 by the Almoravids as the capital of an Islamic empire comprising southern Spain and northwest Africa. In 1147, the Almohads, practicing a more severe form of Islam, conquered Marrakesh and destroyed its mosque. By the end of the 12th century, the Almohads, led by Yaqub Al-Mansur, had completed a new mosque on the site of a destroyed Almoravid palace. The most famous feature of what became known as the Koutoubia Mosque is its 253-foot-tall sandstone minaret. A wide ramp inside the square minaret enabled the muezzin to ride his horse to the balcony to announce prayer time. The minaret is topped by four gilded copper balls extending from a dome. An improbable legend says the fourth ball was created from the jewelry of the Al-Mansur’s wife, taken from her as penance for breaking her
Ramadan fast. The distinctive design of the minaret was copied for Almohad mosques in Seville, Spain, which later became the bell tower of the Seville Cathedral, and in Rabat, which was never completed. Twin towers of the state historical museum on Moscow’s Red Square mimic the Marrakesh minaret. The word “Koutoubia” remembers the dozens of book sellers who once plied their trade at the base of the minaret. In the 12th century, when much of Christian Europe was still intellectually asleep, Islamic Marrakesh was an important center of learning. One of the residents of Marrakesh at the time was Averroes, the Spanish genius born in Cordoba in 1126. Averroes’ commentaries on the works of Aristotle, which had been forgotten in the West, were taken back to Europe by visiting scholars, where they eventually formed some of the foundations of the Renaissance. Don Knebel is a local resident who works for Barnes & Thornburg LLP. For the full column visit donknebel.com. You may contact him at news@currentzionsville.com.
