City council hears amendment to the Northpoint project
HAND extends reach to neighboring county
Compiled by Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com
For the first time in its 15-year history, Noblesville-based HAND Inc. is reaching outside of Hamilton County to create affordable housing options for lowHOUSING income residents. HAND – Hamilton County Area Neighborhood Development – is investing more than $2 million in Lebanon in Boone County to acquire 17 duplexes, which will be renovated and transformed into affordable apartments. The rental community will have 33 leasable units on two cul-desacs, along with an office for property manager Mark III and a community room open to all residents. HAND, a nonprofit that addresses housing needs of low- and moderate-income people, families and senior citizens in Indianapolis suburbs, is branching into Boone County to serve a need, according to HAND’s Outreach and Fundraising Manager Andrea Muirragui Davis. “We know that other suburban communities are facing the same challenges as Hamilton County,” Muirragui Davis said. “Housing costs are rising as the population grows, making it difficult for folks with modest incomes to afford to live in those communities.” The Lebanon duplexes, called Hickory Commons, were built in the 1950s. The renovation project, with funding from the Indiana Housing Community Development Authority and a private loan from Lake City Bank, is expected to take about a year and will not displace residents. Because of its proximity to Hamilton County and the rising need for affordable housing options, Boone County was a natural place for HAND to extend its reach, Muirragui Davis said. HAND’s Boone County project likely won’t be its last outside of Hamilton County. “HAND is always looking for opportunities to address the housing needs of low- and moderate-income individuals and families, whether it is in Hamilton County or elsewhere,” Muirragui Davis said.
The Westfield City Council met June 11. The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 9 at City Hall, 130 Penn St. For more, visit westfield.in.gov. What happened: The Westfield City Council heard an introduction that would amend the Northpoint planned unit development, previously known as Aurora, which includes a business park near the Ind. 38 and Grassy Branch Road intersection. The amendment would add more than 100 acres to the project. Since it was only an introduction, no action was taken. A public hearing is scheduled for the Advisory Plan Commission meeting at 7 p.m. July 2 at City Hall, 130 Penn St. What it means: Thirty of the additional acres would be at the southeast corner of Ind. 38 and Grassy Branch Rd. That area would be added to the commerce park section of the development. The remaining 70 acres would be on the southern side of the property and also designed for a commerce park area.

What happened: The council heard an introduction to the Liberty Villas planned unit development. Since it was an introduction, no action was taken. A public hearing is scheduled for the Advisory Plan Commission meeting at 7 p.m. July 2 at City Hall, 130 Penn St. What it means: The development is a rezone to allow for a 22-acre property at the southwest corner of 151st Street and Ditch Road. If approved, it will include 84 single-family attached units with two units per structure. What happened: The council approved the Davis planned unit development, 5-1. What it means: The development is comprised of 80 acres on the west side of Ditch Road between 156th and 161st streets. It will include 125 single-family residences. Since the developer made verbal commitments at past meetings, council members Mark Keen and Chuck Lehman agreed that the process of approvals might change in the future.

Indy Synchro Team to host camp By Noah Alatza news@currentinwestfield.com
The nonprofit synchronized swimming organization Indy Synchro, Inc., will host a summer camp for all ages SWIMMING starting in July. Westfield High School teacher Allison Delp’s daughter, Katie, 9, has swam with the only synchronized swim club in Indiana for the past three years. A fourth-grader at White River Elementary School, she competes in the 12-and-under age group. “Many people just don’t know about the opportunity to try synchro,” Delp said. “With my daughter, she started doing dancing, gymnastics and the swim team and decided that she loved all three. Synchro combined everything she had an interest in. They are essentially doing all of those but holding their breath underwater.” Delp said most people don’t appreciate the difficulty of the sport. Katie said she fell in love with synchro because it’s unique. “You get lots of exercise and it is very fun,” she said. “I have made a lot of new friends from other schools, too.”

Scouts build benches at WHS By Noah Alatza news@currentinwestfield.com Two benches are now installed inside the main gate of Westfield High School’s Riverview Health football GIVING BACK stadium. Two local Girl Scouts from Troop 1505 raised funds to purchase and install the benches while working to achieve their Silver Award, a Girl Scout Cadette’s highest honor. Westfield eighth-graders Maija Waiter and Cora Maine raised money for more than a year and collected nearly $1,500 for the resin benches, which last longer than traditional benches. The girls were responsible for all research, fundraising and finding a company for engraving. Each bench has a famous quote, including this one from Gandhi: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” The other is from Girls Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low: “The work of today is the history of tomorrow, and we are its makers.” Maija’s mother, Cathy, said the idea was sparked after the girls noticed that families

often gather at the gates of the entrance to the stadium on game nights. “They thought it would be a nice asset,” Cathy said. “Especially with grandparents standing there, Maija and Cora thought, ‘Let’s install benches.’” Cathy said the support the girls have received from the community and the school district has been phenomenal. Westfield High School Athletic Director Bill Davis attended the dedication of the benches and said he was excited about the new addition.

Westfield Rocks the 4th to feature fireworks; Lions Club takes over car show By Anna Skinner • Anna@youarecurrent.com
Terry and Jo Lebo won the 2016 Headliner Car Show “Best in Show” Award with their 1933 Willy’s. (File photo)
Westfield Rocks the 4th will feature a mix of familiar and new attractions. The event takes place from 4 to 10:30 p.m. July 4 at Grand Park. Returning again is the hot dog eating COVER STORY contest, the car show, the fireworks synchronized with music and more. New this year, the Westfield Lions Club will take over the car show and the Indianapolis Colts will have a presence in advance of the July 25 start of training camp.
Westfield Lions Car Show
The car show is not new, but in past years, the Westfield Lions Club only staffed the event with volunteers. This year, the club is supervising the entire event. Previously known as the Headliners Car Show, the city asked the Lions Club to take over because of its experience helping with past events. Larry Clarino, immediate pastpresident for the club, said he wouldn’t be surprised to see 100 to 250 vehicles. Last year, the event featured 107. In addition, Clarino said all proceeds from the car show will benefit the Indianapolis Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “My personal hope is that in the future, and we certainly plan to continue to do this, is we make the beneficiary a more local charity,” Clarino said. “This year the contestants are going to be voting for the category entrants. We have 10 different categories and I have two celebrity judges that will be voting on the Best in Show Award and a People’s Choice Award where fans there will be able to vote for their favorite vehicle.” Eventually, Clarino wants to model the show after Artomobilia in Carmel, with unique vehicles. He said the Westfield Lions Car Show will have “cool” trophies and noted there has been a tremendous response to the club’s marketing.

Like most Fourth of July celebrations, Westfield Rocks the 4th will end with a fireworks show. Synchronized to music, the fireworks will be launched in the southeast quadrant of the parking area, behind the general public parking in Lot C “Make no mistake, there are a lot of options on the Fourth of July,” Mayor Andy Cook said. “What makes ours unique is the layout and accessibility. We can safely and easily move people in and out of the celebration. And, there are unobstructed views of the fireworks throughout Grand Park. We also have the best fireworks in central Indiana. I am biased, of course.”
Family friendly activities:
The 2018 Frank’s Franks Hot Dog Eating Competition will begin at 5:30 p.m. Registrants must be at least 18 years old. Competitors are judged on who eats five hot dogs, includ-
ing the buns, the fastest. Six registrants will be chosen to compete. Live entertainment will include performances by the Jason Lee McKinney Band and the Flying Toasters. The Kids Zone returns this year as a free event with face painting, bounce houses, inflatables, human foosball, giant slides and more.
Vendors:

O B S E R V AT I O N Know the difference Commentary by Terry Anker
Commentary by Danielle Wilson
Presenting to a large assembly of mostly central Indiana business leaders, the young mayor of the recently ordained City of Fishers, Scott Fadness, outlined a vision for his community and that of the larger body of central Indiana. While at once relaxed, even jocular, he is intensely focused on navigating the threats and opportunities with which he is confronted. One is comforted to expect that even if the challenges prove overwhelming, it would not be for any lack of effort, intelligence or intensity on his part. In examining the population growth, rising real estate values and other affirmations of the positive direction his citizenry enjoys, he admonished the group with his own mantra — namely to invest oneself in “knowing the difference between what you are doing and what’s happening to you.” Too often, we revel in the success we might encounter in life, claiming that “we own” all that is good and right. We are making it happen. We are “doing” it. Still, as life turns against us and the winds blow blustering cold in our face, we assert all matter of calamity to be “happening” to us. Surely, sometimes we are correct. Yet, how often did we take credit for a rising tide and refuse blame for a sinking ship? In our own work, home and family, are we holding ourselves to account for what we can hope to affect and deflecting credit (or blame) for that which we cannot? Is the magic in life not whether we own our actions or not but instead knowing when and how to hold ourselves accountable and when to claim a pass? Fadness reminds us to check not only our hubris but also our humility.
We survived! Twenty-three people, seven nights, one beach house. Compared to previous family vacations, this week ranks pretty high. Here’s why. HUMOR For starters, the “littles” are getting older. Three of my nieces were drowning victims waiting to happen last year, but this summer they can all sort of swim. And more importantly, they can truly be threatened with, gulp, “No iPad time!” True, my youngest sister still has two kiddos in diapers, and they cried a lot. I mean a lot. But their antics were more than offset by copious amounts of alcohol. Wine, beer, rum, vodka, tequila, even a fifth of Jack, were consumed in vast quantities, making the boxes of SPF 70 we went through look like we were wintering in Siberia. And that’s saying something, as most of us are pasty gingers. There were no severe sunburns, only one fight (the result of an impromptu Dr. Phil session where one of my nieces told her sister she didn’t like her new haircut), and with the exception of another niece projectile vomiting in a rental car on the way to the airport, no illnesses. We enjoyed sandcastle-building, Boogie-Boarding, storm-watching, dominoes, Jeopardy, eating, reading, fishing, original performance, and actual, live, face-to-face, conversation. At the last night’s dinner, we played HighLow, where everyone shares the best and worst parts of the trip. My dad, who had experienced limited beach time because of a twisted ankle, said it best: “I just like being here with all of you.” Me, too. Here’s to quality time with family. Cheers! Peace out.

READER’S VIEW How to help reduce mosquitoes Editor, Early in my career, I was a health inspector. Among other things, I was trained in mosquito (vector) control. The majority of people believes that pesticides (in forms such as mosquito control trucks) are the best method of vector control. They are not. The most effective mosquito-control method is to remove mosquito breeding waters, specifically standing water. You’ll want to look around for anything that contains standing water. Standing water is water that doesn’t move much. Streams are not standing water so long as the water is flowing. Stagnant water is where mosquitoes breed. Look for stagnant water in your gutters, in buckets or tires left outside, or even in small containers such as paper cups left outdoors. Then, empty everything that has stagnant water and make sure no more water can refill the same area. Although you can make significant reductions in the mosquito population by removing stagnant water, if you have
neighbors with stagnant water (such as in uncleaned gutters and downspouts) you’re probably still going to have mosquitoes. Sharing this information with your neighbors may help greatly in reducing the mosquito population in your neighborhood. I recommend making or purchasing a bat house. Bat houses can be purchased on Amazon or from Tractor Supply for about $18. Just one bat can eat up to 2,000 mosquitoes a night! A small bat house might host 10 bats. Ten bats eating 2,000 mosquitos a night equals 20,000 dead mosquitoes in one night. That is about 600,000 dead mosquitos in one month from just one little $18 bat house. Mosquitos can, and often do, transmit diseases such as the West Nile virus, encephalitis (brain swelling) and Zika. They also transmit heart worms to dogs. There may be many more diseases they transmit that we just don’t know yet. Lastly, the Indiana bat (myotis sodalis) is an endangered species. We need them. We need to protect them. After we finished, the waiter informed us there was still credit remaining. “You use it,” Jim said before he left. “How much credit is left?” I asked the waiter. “The balance is $971.12. That’s a record here. Second place is $13.78.” “Wait,” I said, “that’s not right. The card was only for $30.” The manager came over and confirmed I could use the card’s balance. “Our mistake,” he said, “and we will honor it.” I told Mary Ellen, and she demanded that I return the card. I wanted other opinions. First, I emailed my brother in New York. “Peter, I bought a $30 gift card but they credited me $1,000 by mistake. What should I do?” Peter’s response: “About what?” Then I emailed my editor, Heidi. “Can you help with a situation. I have a $1,000 gift-card from a local breakfast joint, but I only paid for a $30 card.” Her response: “First, you need a question mark after ‘situation.’ Second, gift card is not hyphenated. Enjoy your free breakfasts.” Finally, I called my friend, Bob. “Bob, I’m not hurting anyone if I use the card, am I?” “You’d be killing chickens.” “I’m just eating the eggs.” “They could have been chickens.” Bob asked his wife what she would do. “Cathy agrees with Mary Ellen, 100 percent.” “Did you tell her what Mary Ellen said?” “No, why would that matter?” I did cut up the card. I was looking forward to a three-egg, four-cheese omelet every Sunday for two years, so I’ll be a little down about that — but so will my cholesterol. Mary Ellen was happy. She said if the café caught their mistake, I’d have egg on my face for using the card. Which was my plan from the beginning.

Summertime activities are hard on glasses, driving many families in to discuss contact lenses for their EYE HEALTH kids. Contacts can be a fantastic option for children, often providing a big confidence boost once they shed their frames. Young athletes, especially, find freedom from the burden of dirty, fogging and often scratched or broken glasses. In our office, the conversation about contacts usually begins around age 9, though we often fit younger kids who are motivated and able. Many will leave wearing contacts that same day, while others may require a few training visits to get the hang of the technique. A study by the American Optometric Association found that 90 percent of children ages 8-11 are successful in learning to use contacts. Easily the most important factor in a successful contact lens fit is motivation. You may be excited about seeing their beautiful face without glasses in the way, but if the child is not motivated to learn, the training can be very frustrating for them. A chal-

lenging initial experience often turns them off to the idea of contacts in the future. It’s best to let them decide that they’re ready. The other main consideration should be hygiene and maturity. Do you have to remind them daily to brush their teeth and wash their hands? Adding another critical hygienic step to their routine may be difficult for both of you. Kids should start in daily disposable lenses, which require less maintenance and carry a lower infection risk than monthlyreplacement lenses. We also recommend a UV-protected lens, of which there are many now available for no additional cost. A little UV protection goes a long way over potentially 50-plus years of contact lens wear. Regardless of their age, if you think your kid is ready, then we’d agree! You know them best. With some good instruction, motivation and support, they’ll be glasses-free in no time! Switch the water temperature from hot to cold several times, holding each temperature for about 10 seconds. The changes in temperature can rev up your blood flow, which can help make you more alert. Gentry channels Judy Garland again in Magic Thread Cabaret performances By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Katy Gentry has long admired Judy Garland. “Judy, in my mind, was the MUSIC best entertainer to ever live,” Gentry said. Gentry will perform Garland’s songs during Magic Thread Cabaret’s production of “Katy Gentry is Judy Garland LIVE!” The performances are set for 7:30 p.m. July 6 and 7 and 4 p.m. July 8 at The Cat, 254 Veterans Way, Carmel. Gentry said the best thing about the 2017 show “Beyond the Rainbow” at Actors Theatre of Indiana was hearing how others remember Garland in the receiving line after the performances. The Fishers resident was one of three actresses to portray Garland at various stages of her life, sharing a most impressive actress in a lead role/professional theatre division in the 2017 Mitty Awards with Annie Yokum, who played Garland in her middle years and an actress from another show, Karaline Feller. Gentry played Garland at age 38 during her famous 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall. Gentry had previously played Garland in her 20s in the 2007 ATI production. “The best things that I remember hearing were, ‘Thank you for bringing Judy back to me. I remember seeing her on her show,’ or, ‘I remember seeing her live,’” Gentry said. “People had tears in their eyes telling me this. There is definitely a connection there between her and her audience.” Magic Thread Cabaret founders Tom Alvarez and Dustin Klein approached her about starting the cabaret-style theater. The Magic Thread Cabaret debuted in November 2017. “They would love to feature you as Judy,” Gentry said. “Over the last few months I think it’s become its own entity. Of course, it’s a dream for me to feature Judy again.” She will be accompanied by music director and pianist-composer Klein, bassist Christian Starnes and drummer Greg Wolff.
Katy Gentry performs as Judy Garland in Actors Theatre of Indiana’s “Beyond the Rainbow.” (Actors Theatre of Indiana/Ed Stewart).
“I will be dressed as Katy and talking like Katy, but when we feature the songs, Judy will arrive,” Gentry said. “It’s a performance that allows me to share some of my connections with Judy. Then I go into her (personna) and bring her spirit out in the songs.” Gentry’s favorite Garland song is “Come Rain or Shine.” “It captures her entire life in one song in my opinion,” Gentry said. “That no matter what happens we’re going to get through this and sort of press on. We’ll end the first act of the show with that. A lot of the songs are taken from the Carnegie Hall show.” Klein said he wants to accompany the show from the start. “I was so honored that Katy asked me to music direct, and I actually sing a duet with her as well. I have also always loved this style of music. It’s my thing, for sure,” Klein said. “We thought Katy would be a good fit for our cabaret because we

It’s only been two years since 9-yearold Sadie Cohen performed in her first production. It was the THEATER summer of 2016. At the tender age of 7, Cohen played Mary’s Little Lamb in “The Trial of Goldilocks” at Jr. Civic Theatre. And it was just the beginning. “This past year has been an exciting year for me,” Cohen said. “I was in the Children’s Chorus of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ at the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre. I then went straight on to be one of the King’s Royal Princesses in ‘The King and I’ at Brebeuf Jesuit (Preparatory School). I was also in the advanced class at Jr. Civic for the ‘Variety Hour Show’ this past spring and we just performed ‘Emoji: The Musical.’ I was so excited to sing the Matilda solo in the ‘Revolting Children’ scene.” Now, she is on stage in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of “Annie” as one of the orphans, Ruby. The musical runs through July 15.

“I wanted to be in ‘Annie’ because I like trying new experiences and I thought that it would be fun, and I love the show and the movie,” said Cohen, who was selected as a 15-and-under semifinalist for the July 3-4 CarmelFest Has Talent. Why does this soon-to-be fourth-grader at West Clay Elementary School spend so much time in theaters? “I like performing because I love to sing, act and dance and entertain people,” Cohen said. “It makes me happy and I know it makes other people happy, too.” That’s not to say there aren’t a few challenges along the way – like dancing. “I’ve had to work hard at the dancing, but it’s been worth it,” she said, adding her favorite part of the show is the song “Hard Knock Life.” Her performing career also has included three years with the Indianapolis Children’s Choir. But when she’s not on stage, she enjoys arts and crafts, gymnastics, playing piano, swimming and playing with her pets. “I also love going to museums and doing fun things with my family, like seeing shows or traveling,” Cohen said.

Sometimes, it’s just time Commentary by Randy Sorrell and Bill Bernard Sometimes, when building a new home there are hundreds of decisions that need to be made. Sometimes, when OUTDOOR LIVING the pressure to make those decisions in a timely fashion (to keep construction on schedule), you will hear yourself say, “It will be just fine.” Sometimes, with the passage of time, you decide it’s time to rethink some of those decisions. MASTER BATHROOM UPDATE In this Fishers-area home, the relatively short vanity cabinets with cultured marble countertops were “just fine”. The brass metal-framed small shower enclosure was “just fine.” The cultured marble tub with the bright brass tub filler was “just fine”.
Without needing to relocate any of the plumbing infrastructure, the bathroom that was “just fine” became a space that reflects the quality of finishes and sophistication of taste found throughout the rest of the home and that the homeowners always hoped for. Installing a frameless glass shower, freestanding tub, furniture-style vanity and lowering a wall transformed what was a tight, compartmentalized space into an open, airy and relaxing space to start and end your day. Pure luxury! Sometimes, it’s just time to transform your home. Stay home, and be moved.

I’m nostalgic for the past. I collect vinyl records and listen to them on my vintage turntable. I live in GRAMMAR GUY a house that was built in 1890. I write a newspaper column, which is something at this point I’ll have to explain to my grandkids from our colony on Mars. I’m a 30-something with the soul of an octogenarian. I have a hard time admitting the past has passed. The words “past” and “passed” are easier to get mixed up than a set of identical twins on school picture day. Past can be an adjective, noun, adverb and a preposition. Its meaning almost always refers to something that happened before the present time. For example: In the past, MTV played actual music videos. Over the past 12 months, an entire year has gone by. The time is a quarter past four. These uses of past all point to a time that happened prior to the present. Passed is a verb that is the past participle of the word “pass.” It means to move ahead or proceed. For example: In his career, Peyton Manning passed for 539 touch-
downs, an NFL record. Congress passed no legislation last week. You get the idea. Here’s where things get confusing. You could correctly write, “I somehow passed the elephant without seeing him.” You could also correctly write, “I somehow walked past the elephant without seeing him.” The only difference in these two sentences is the word “walked.” As a rule of thumb, use “past” whenever your sentence already includes an active verb like “walked.” Sometimes “passed” trips us up when it’s not used as an active verb. For instance: Time has passed since we last met. He passed away. The local taco restaurant has finally passed its health inspection. Passed doesn’t always indicate literal movement. Past almost always deals with time. Passed almost always deals with movement. The easiest way to remember this is that past is a shorter word than passed, and time is a shorter word than movement.
