Current in Westfield Westfield’s inaugural July 4 celebration, Westfield Rocks the 4th, takes place this weekend, but those planning on attending this event can get a second helping of Independence Day festivities on July 5 – the second day of CarmelFest. CarmelFest Parade 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m The St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana CarmelFest Parade will be lead by Grand Marshal Jason Fishburn, the IMPD officer who suffered a near-fatal gunshot wound almost two years ago while leading a police chase. The parade will feature participants from all over Hamilton County, including the Westfield High School marching band, Speed Athletics and mayoral candidate Russell Cameron among those from Westfield. The parade route will take participants along Range Line Road from Carmel Drive to Main Street. Entertainment CarmelFest will feature three stages of entertainment on both July 4 and 5. Section 3: Any person who violates this Ordinance shall be subject to the penalties of not less than $1,000 and no more than $5,000 per occurrence, as well as attorney fees and all other costs of collection necessary to enforce this Ordinance. Section 4: This Ordinance shall allow the Superintendent of the Westfield Public Utilities to remove any unauthorized device used to access the Westfield water supply and to refuse service to any customer whose property has benefited from such unauthorized access.

It is our opinion that a time of crisis is not a time to push a political agenda. The tragic oil spill in the Gulf has grabbed the attention of a nation. Never before have Americans seen such widespread destruction of nature and livelihoods. Our leaders seem unprepared and reluctant to deal with this crisis. Although BP, a privately held company, is responsible for the event and consequences, the impact on such a huge part of the American economy and its natural resources deserves a federal government response. The response, thus far, has been one of delay, blame and political opportunism. As Americans living on the Gulf Coast question how they will survive, our president presented an agenda of new clean energy. One is reminded of sugarplums and pipe dreams. What is needed now is action. Americans want to plug the oil leak. Clean up the oil. Get workers back to work on the oil rigs. Get the fishermen, shrimpers and everyone else who rely on the gulf for their income back to work. Blame can be placed later. They say timing is everything. Now is not the time to give sway to political donors.

Growth is good?

It is our position that the predatory nature of tax incentives and other bribes to lure business from one municipality to another does not benefit taxpayers. Instead, the incentives arms race only serves to escalate in both tensions and expense. Yet we have been conditioned to accept that all growth is good and that competition for growth, by extension, must be good. Businesses waste away without the benefit of the market. And some, such as pro sports teams, feel entitled to demand taxpayer support or, like naughty kids, threaten to take their ball home if they don’t get their way. Municipalities are all too happy to support the habit. Is all growth necessarily good? Should taxpayers subsidize private enterprise? When public officials compete with each other, using taxes to entice new or expanding businesses, the process put in motion benefits no one. We believe communities should use a business-friendly tax structure, appropriate zoning, high-quality infrastructure and an educated work force to attract and keep desirable enterprises.

We’re told it has been neglected since it was sold in a Hamilton County Sheriff’s auction approximately a year ago. COMMENTARY By Terry Anker The migratory patterns of modern Americans have to rival those of any culture in the history of humankind. Once, it was assumed that our kids would mature to adulthood, go off to college, and then come home and marry their high school sweetheart and settle down – in the city, if not the neighborhood, where they had grownup. Now it is not uncommon to find families in which every sibling lives in a different city or even state. Even international relocations are commonplace. And the permutations are exacerbated by the parents. We marry, divorce and marry again – each time adding complexity to our lives. The buzzwords “social media” serve to label the electronic medium spawned, in part, by these new living arrangements. Today, we remain in touch with folks from high school even though we haven’t been in our hometown in decades. We talk to extended family across miles with the same ease that we speak to our co-worker in the next office.

Facebook, LinkedIn and others may be wonders to many, but how have they changed the nature of human interaction? At a recent conference, I took the time to attend a session on how to take advantage of these new forms of communication. Much of the talk centered on how to get people to notice one’s posts, how to use text messaging to cut in line in front of others waiting for attention from the recipient, and how to get one’s message out across multiple electronic platforms. Do we really need this much attention? If I Tweet and text and blog and e-mail and call and skywrite to get attention, am I important or simply an electronic narcissist? Do I really have that much to say? And do my friends and family really need to read it?

Commentary By Danielle Wilson As my almost 2-year-old niece threw her third tantrum of the morning in response to her already 2-year-old cousin’s Barbie theft, it occurred to me I could get good money for them on the black market. Kidding! I really like their parents, and they would not be happy with me if I up and sold their daughters right out from under them. But seriously, 2-year olds are bratty little creatures most of the time, with only a few redeeming qualities. I’ve really had to focus on these the last few months so as not to follow through with my illegal baby scam. Here’s what I’ve come up with. 1. They are cute. I’ve yet to meet an ugly child between the ages of 18 and 36 months. Even my twins, who were born looking like bald albino eaglets, were quite adorable by their second birthday. And one of the aforementioned nieces? She transformed from an 87-year-old man with a receding hairline to a Gerber baby with beautiful locks upon turning two. 2. They are cheaply entertained. Two-year olds do not need Xboxes, Nintendo DS’, or even creepy-eyed baby dolls that require real diapers. My nieces can play for hours with a five-cent bouncy ball, a copy of the New York Times and a discarded Reebok. 3. They still take naps. ‘Nough said. 4. They talk funny. Because their speech is still developing, two year olds have a unique propensity to say words incorrectly, inject an adorable lisp, and/or repeat words they shouldn’t. This can make for some hilarious moments, especially in public. “So sorry Father, I think she’s referring to a type of boat, a ship.” 5. They think clean-up time is a game, simply because it has

I can lift my niece up and off the floor with one hand and probably jog five miles with her in my pocket if I had to. 7. They haven’t figured out that there is nothing whatsoever binding them to the time-out chair. 8. They don’t have a fashion opinion yet. My daughters won’t let me within 10 feet of their closets when they are getting dressed, and heaven forbid I should protest a selected mini-skirt/blouse combo. But a two year old? So yes, the terrible twos are real, but they don’t have to be the end of a beautiful relationship with your child. Flood damage closes Monon Trail By Brandie Bohney Current in Westfield The northernmost strip of the Monon Trail in Westfield is and will remain closed until repairs can be made following damage caused at least partially by recent severe weather. “The section of the trail is the old roadbed, and it’s highly elevated,” Mayor Andy Cook said. “It goes over a very low area with a creek running through it, and what’s happened is the stone shoulder is washing out from underneath.” A small section of the shoulder has washed away completely, and other shoulder segments are cracked and receding. One portion of pavement has also cracked because of the reduction of support beneath it. Plans to repair the section of trail are underway, and part of the plan includes finding a way to make certain such a collapse doesn’t happen again. “What we’re going to have to do is go deeper into the soil on the edge where the water is coming out underneath it and probably add some drainage in the gravel shoulder,” Cook said. The approximate time frame for which the section will be closed and the cost of repairs were still unknown as of press time. Cook said that while the damage may be covered in the one-year warranty period of the work, he doesn’t know the legal responsibilities of either the city

or the contractor are insofar as far as paying for the repairs. “We’ve had the contractor out there … and they will, in all likelihood, have to cover this, but we will be working with them to prevent this from happening again,” he said. Because the damage is at the northernmost portion of the trail, it will affect fewer trail users. “If people do come that far north, it’s where they turn around and head back south,” Cook said. “Fortunately, it’s the least-used part of the trail right now.”

Cycling event to benefit prostate cancer By Brandie Bohney Current in Westfield Many types of cancers have big, well-known events and foundations for fundraising. Shaune Shelby hopes to change the lack of attention that men’s cancers – specifically prostate cancer – get. Shelby’s father, Lawrence, was a prostate cancer survivor until Christmas 2008, Lawrence when he lost his battle in Shleby his sleep. After his father’s death, Shelby wanted to do more; he said he wanted to share his father’s fighting spirit with other men and their families. From that desire, Bike It for Prostate Cancer, a combination of competitive and family-friendly bike rides to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF), was born. Shelby found PCF through research, and discovered it to be the world’s largest philanthropic source of support for prostate cancer research. “There’s no middleman,” Shelby said. “The money that we bring in goes to the front line of prostate cancer research. They give funding to the most promising treatment research options.” Westfield has provided the perfect venue for Shelby’s vision. He’s also gotten support from bike shops and some Westfield businesses. When all is said and done, though, the event is about informing the community through a family event. “We’ve tried to make the ride enjoyable and fun and make it an opportunity for everyone in the Westfield community to come out and participate,” he said.

How to follow local zoning laws Tone of voice is everything Commentary By Ken Kingshill When someone wishes to change the zoning on their land, they must follow a specific process set forth by state law. After filing a petition with the City’s Community Development Department, the landowner’s request is reviewed by the Advisory Plan Commission. The Plan Commission holds a public hearing and then makes a recommendation to the City Council. The City Council, in turn, considers the petition and then makes the ultimate decision on whether to grant the requested change in use of the property. In analyzing the petition, the Plan Commission and the City Council are required by state law to “give reasonable regard” to the following five criteria in no particular order of importance: The Comprehensive Plan. This is a big-picture policy document that serves as a general guide for the future planning and development of Washington Township. In contrast, zoning ordinances provide the teeth to implement the policies set forth in the Comprehensive Plan. Is the proposed change of zoning generally consistent with the policies of land development set forth in the Plan? Current conditions and the character of current structures and uses. This criterion refers to what’s happening right now on the subject land. Is this a pig farm completely surrounded by apartment buildings? Maybe it makes sense to change the zoning from agriculture to residential.

The most desirable use for which the land is adapted. This is often stated as the “highest and best use” of the land. Maybe a cornfield in the middle of an urban area is no longer the best use for that land. The conservation of property values throughout the jurisdiction. Does the proposed change in zoning have a negative or positive impact on property values across the township? Presumably a slaughterhouse in the middle of a bedroom community wouldn’t preserve property values. Put it near a rail yard in an industrial zone and you might have the opposite result. The word “jurisdiction” here refers to the entire area covered by the zoning ordinance, which in our case is Washington Township. Responsible growth and development. Is the requested change in zoning consistent with orderly growth and development or does it contribute to a haphazard and patchwork progression? Are utilities available to meet the demands of the new zoning or must the city go out of its way to provide service? These are the issues that we consider. No one factor outweighs or trumps another. There is no formula for reaching a decision. Simply put, under the law, there is no wrong or right answer. Now you know what it’s like to take a law school exam.

A man and woman had deplaned and were standing near the gate becoming more and more unhappy that someone with a wheelchair wasn’t at the gate to meet them. At the customer service desk was a woman who looked like she had probably been in the business for a few years and had maybe had her share of grumpy customers. The woman of the duo finally went over to the desk and said, “Who do we yell at so we can get the wheelchair here that we requested?” The customer service woman said, “Well, first of all I suggest you don’t yell at anyone. My experience is that doesn’t

accomplish much good. There has obviously been a mistake, and we will be happy to fix it for you.” Whoa, that was pretty gutsy on the part of the customer service rep, but she had a point. People are people, and at no time is there an advantage to being bossy, cranky, snippy, snotty or otherwise rude with them. I sort of liked it that the customer service woman wasn’t rude back, but was very direct and spoke up for the human race in her suggestion that the couple be civil in their requests, even though they were frustrated. My dear mother gave me some great adages to live by as I was growing up, and one that has stuck with me because I’ve observed it to be so true is, “Tone of voice is everything.” Sometimes tone of voice is the only thing. About Hal Cooper – This Westfield resident and father of three has worked as chief financial officer of his airline for the past 11 years. Before ascending to this position, he worked his way up the ladder – from accountant, to controller, then director before becoming CFO. Originally from Alabama, Cooper and his family spent many years in Minnesota before moving to Carmel and finally calling Westfield home just over two years ago.

By Brandie Bohney Current in Westfield Flying the friendly skies isn’t as easy a task as it sounds. As Westfield resident and Republic Airways Holdings, Inc. CFO Hal Cooper explains, the industry is a tough one to survive. Capitalintensive, labor-intensive, and subject to the sometimes wild fluctuations of commodities such as oil, those skies can be downright hostile. Still, Republic has methodically and painstakingly not only survived some of the turbulence in the industry, but thrived in spite of it. This Westfield resident and father of three was one of the key players who made that happen. “We took a business that had about $88 million in revenue in 1999 and lost $10 million to a business that, this year, will probably make around $2.7 billion,” Cooper said. “We took it from 33 kind of old and tired (propeller planes) to close to 300 jets now.” Cooper and the CEO and COO of Republic transplanted from Minnesota, where they had been running another regional airline servicing company, to central Indiana in 1999. Here, they became the new management team of then Chautauqua Airlines, a regional passenger service for major airlines. The company made its money on flights outsourced by carriers such as Delta and United. Chautauqua flew passengers on its planes, which had the names of the larger airlines on the side. That type of business, Cooper said, is very profitable, but it has no chance of getting any bigger. “We still have that model, but we didn’t see growth in that part

of the business,” he said. “We see the next 10 years not so much as our traditional regional model … but as a low-cost carrier.” In capturing that vision, Republic has acquired both Midwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines in the past year. And while Republic still flies for other carriers, it now flies its own routes, as well. The decision has been a decidedly good one thus far. Of the three major low-cost carriers – Southwest, AirTran and Republic – Cooper said his employer’s ranked second and still progressing. So what does the future hold for the airline industry as a whole? Cooper thinks more consolidation is imminent, as it reduces costs, and he said he supports the concept of fewer airlines. He also feels that the low-cost model that Republic follows is probably the only sustainable model in the long run. “There are only so many costs you can control, and airlines have traditionally not done a good job of keeping those costs under control,” he said. “You have to take out all the costs you can. People have gotten used to low airfares, and the consumers want low airfares whether oil is $50 a barrel or $150 a barrel.” He also noted that, while certain consumers – especially business travelers – are loyal to one or two carriers, most people follow the cheapest fare regardless of how they feel about the carrier or what kinds of past experiences they may have had with it. Consumer data, he said, shows that even a $5 difference in fares can be enough to sway travelers from one airline to another. “Your typical family of four going to Disney World is going to take the lowest price,” he said. That type of competition, he said, makes it essential for air-

lines to control as many costs as possible. As an up-and-coming no-frills airline, that’s something that Republic has shown itself skilled at doing. Cost is everything in this business, Cooper said, and he and the rest of the Republic team will have to continue their success in this area as prices continue to drop. “This is a competitive business; it’s hard to make a buck,” Cooper said. “You can fill up a plane of $99 flights to Florida but you’re not going to make any money doing that.”

This cherry isn't as it was, or was it?

COMMENTARY By Chef Michael Vlasich “Urban legends” can be found in many walks of life and mostly can be proven false. The questions become harder when they span across centuries and extend between a multitude of topics or facts. Recently, I was engaged in a conversation that included questions on many aspects of a particular urban legend: Are they edible or plastic? Are they preserved in formaldehyde? Were they made using red dye that causes cancer? Did they originate in Oregon or were they copied from Europe? Do they contain liquor? Are they harmful to children, causing them to grow extra fingers? These were the major points, and after much digging and sifting, I have the truths about “maraschino cherries,” the once highly sought after cocktail garnish. The original maraschino cherries came from Yugoslavia, centuries ago, produced from a small bitter black cherry called the mascara, which grew wild in Dalmatia. Back then, there was no good way to preserve fruit. Being located on the coast of Croatia, they would pickle them in seawater, and then marinate them in cherry liqueur made from mascara juice, pits and leaves. This was the real first maraschino cherry. This probably makes you wonder, how we got from there to the bright red, rubbery, sweet cherry, we use today to top ice cream sundaes. The original cherries were brought here by the immigrants, and along with everything else, were sold to start a life in the new world. They quickly became in demand in the upscale hotels, as they were used as a garnish in cocktails, showing a sign of wealth and taste. In the 1800s, farmers in Oregon found their state was the perfect climate for growing cherry trees. As the years went on, they began to have an overabundant mass of cherries, and they had to find new ways to use them. With this and the demand for the maraschino, people found ways to make cheaper versions less expensively. In the early 1900s, the University of Oregon developed a technique to soak the cherries in a brine and then in a cherry liqueur, imitating the cherries of Dalmatia. Later, they were changed to a mixture of almond

Maraschino cherries Ingredients: • Brine • 2 qts. Water • 1 tbsp. pickling salt • 5 # pitted cherries • Syrup • 4.5# granulated sugar • 3 cups water • 1 lemon • 1 tbsp. red food color • 1 tbsp. almond extract • 1/2 cup amaretto (optional) Directions: Brine: Bring water and salt to a boil only long enough to dissolve the salt. Cool for 10 minutes, pour over the cherries, mix gently to ensure thoroughly mixed. Cover and let sit overnight for 12 hours. Drain the cherries and discard the brine, rinse in cold water and let drain for 10 minutes. Syrup: Combine sugar, water, juice of one lemon and food coloring. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Remove from heat, let stand 20 minutes, then pour over the cherries. After cool, cover and let sit 24 hours. Drain the cherries, saving the juice. Bring the juice to a boil again, reduce by 25 percent, then add the almond extract and amaretto, and pour over the cherries again. If canning, follow canning directions 100 percent of the details or Refrigerate and eat

oil and paste, closer imitating the maraschino cherry flavors of today, specifically because of prohibition and the outlaw of all liquor. This is how we got the maraschino cherries we know today. If you have a large batch of cherries this summer to preserve, included is a recipe for maraschino cherries. I have used it before; it is basic, but it’s tasty. Chef Michael R. Acupuncture an effective treatment for pain COMMENTARY By Dmitry M. Arbuck M.D. Acupuncture is one of the alternative modalities used in treatment of pain. It is usually effective in acute painful conditions, but it is less effective in chronic painful conditions. Knee pain is known as one of the best in terms of response to acupuncture, and headaches are among the worst responders. Acupuncture is based on the notion that every tissue, organ and cell is, in essence, an electric device and therefore may be influenced by changing the electrical flow to its particular area. Acupuncture needles, in essence, present electrodes, which change polarity of the electrical flow and may energize or inhibit certain areas even far remote from the place where the needle is inserted. In addition to electrical phenomena, acupuncture influences neurochemistry as well, changing the level of neurotransmitters in the brain and peripheral tissues, therefore influencing pain propagation and pain origin. Acupuncture is frequently used with herbs and supplements, and acupuncture practitioners frequently compare acupuncture to a spoon to “stir a soup of herbs”. Lose belly fat with CLA COMMENTARY By Laura Marenco Could adding a supplement to your healthy weight-loss program help eliminate stubborn belly fat? A 2006 study showed that adding conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, to a healthy diet reduced fat in leg and abdominal areas for women and in the abdomen for men. Participants lost from 1.5 to 3 pounds by simply adding a CLA supplement to what they were already doing. CLA is a fatty acid known for promoting good health, and it was first identified in 1978 by Dr. Michael Pariza ,who studied its effects on cancer prevention at the University of Wisconsin. While he did not find any link to cancer prevention, his research suggested some interesting health benefits. CLA not only helped to reduce body fat, it helped maintain lean muscle tissue. Many other studies followed and have shown that CLA decreases the amount of fat stored after eating, increases how fast fat is broken down in fat cells and rate of fat metabolism, and decreases the total number of fat cells in our bodies. In improving fat metabolism and preventing

storage, CLA has been shown to help glucose pass into muscle cells more effectively, preventing it from being converted into fat, and it helps fat enter the cell membranes of muscle and connective tissue, where the fat is burned for fuel. CLA also interferes with a substance in your body, called lipoprotein lipase, which is used to store fat in your body. Also CLA increases lean muscle tissue, which naturally slims your body. A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat, but muscle mass only takes up one-third the space in our body. And the more lean the muscle, the more calories your body burns thereby speeding fat burning. As a result, you get smaller in all the right places. We’re all like a school of fish COMMENTARY By David Cain At age two, my oldest daughter wouldn’t wear a bike helmet. It was cruel punishment for a father who just wanted to take his daughter for a relaxing bike ride. Her will to resist the helmet was like trying to bring two repelling magnets together. Like trying to move an entrenched mule. Like trying to win an argument with my wife: It was impossible. My veiled threats fell on deaf ears. Helmet on, helmet thrown to the ground in a fit of rage, and repeat. Finally, I resolved that there would be no bike riding at this house. She wouldn’t wear the helmet under any circumstance. Fast forward two more years and we find a house where bike helmets are commonplace. They aren’t reserved for just bike rides; they are part of everyday attire. At four years old, a bike helmet adorned with Tinker Bell is a part of the accepted dress code. It’s the same helmet as before, only sized a little larger to fit a bigger head with more hair. And, at the same age as the resistance started two years earlier, the second little girl willingly accepts the helmet. She plops it on her head and runs to the mirror to see how stylish she looks with that hard plastic thing on her head. What changed in the two years?

Human beings want social validation. They crave acceptance like a nicotine addiction. We all want to fit in with our peers despite what we might say or believe. Everyone would rather fit in and be accepted. Every person might have a different group they are trying to fit in with, but fitting in and being socially validated is important to all of us. Whether you play in the band or the football team, you have a group whose opinion and social validation you desire. My oldest daughter’s change in opinion is a byproduct of what she sees from her friends. They all wear helmets, so she now wears a helmet – it’s a part of fitting in. Her younger sister, at the same age when she threw fits about head safety, wears the helmet willingly because her sister does it. We all want to fit in. People have the independent thinking of a school of fish – a good lesson to remember in your business and family. A rare Japanese collectible: the Mazda RX-7 COMMENTARY By Shawn Miller Rarely do I consider Japanese cars collectibles. There have been only a handful of Japanese cars I would consider truly collectible, the 60’s Toyota 2000 GT (only 150 or so were made-they trade at about $500,000), and the 70’s Datsun/ Nissan 240Z, come to mind immediately. By and large, most Japanese cars are what I would call “appliances.” They’re dependable, built to a price, and designed to last only a few years. Additionally, a certain Japanese manufacturer has consistently replicated cars other manufacturers have made, which just rubs me the wrong way. One Japanese car, however, broke new ground and had a very successful run: the Mazda R-7. The RX-7 was produced from 1978 to 2002. The original RX-7 was a sports coupe produced from 1979-1985. The second generation, produced from 1986-1991, featured a complete restyling reminiscent of the Porsche 924/944. The third generation of the RX-7, produced from 1992-2002 was an outright, no-compromise sports car by Japanese standards. The RX-7 made Car and Driver’s Ten Best List five times. In total, 811,634 RX-7s were produced. Parts are readily available and there is a good network of clubs across the country for

Shelley and Brian Jordan are both trained chefs with over 40 years of experience between them and are James Beard Award Winning chefs. “All we know is food,” Shelley said. “So it’s our number-one priority. Everything you get from us is fresh. We roast our own chicken and pork and make fifteen salads every day which we sell by the pound and half pound.” The menu has everything from wraps, paninis and sandwiches to homemade ding-dongs and pink ladies, a red velvet cake with white chocolate. The most popular of their fifteen salads is the BBT, bacon, blue cheese and tomato salad in red wine vinaigrette. Although there are several types of salad, the restaurant also has green salads which are made in house with fresh ingredients as well. The café also specializes in corporate catering and will make sandwich platters for a company get-together.

Just don't and don't just COMMENTARY By Brandie Bohney My husband is a sports fan. He loves sports. With few exceptions, he enjoys just about everything that comes out of the sporting world. For this reason, he listens to a lot of ESPN radio. And ESPN radio is the source of today’s column topic. An ad for an Indianapolis-area business that airs on ESPN radio illustrates an interesting grammatical faux pas. The ad states of the business, “They just don’t say they’re local; they are local.” Hmmm. Do you see the problem? The problem is just don’t. When you use just before don’t, it acts as a sort of intensifier: The museum has many fine paintings; just don’t touch them. If you reverse the order of the words, though, the meaning changes because just then goes on to intensify whatever verb follows it: Don’t just stand there; do something! Do you see the difference? The problem with the ad is that just should follow don’t instead of preceding it. And while I think the difference in meaning is pretty clear, this is one of those mistakes that anyone can make when not paying enough attention or

speaking faster than thinking. Instead of saying that the business actually is local rather than merely making that claim falsely, the ad seems to say that the business is local but doesn’t say so. And that’s not the intention of the ad. Normally, this sort of thing would be no big deal. A one-time slip of the tongue, and probably only a handful of people would even catch it. But it wasn’t a one-time slip of the tongue. It was a recorded and regularly played advertisement. And every time it plays, the error becomes both more and more glaring to the listeners who’ve already caught it as well as apparent to those who haven’t yet recognized it. The point is that even a small and understandable error can grow like a weed in your grammatical garden if you don’t pluck it as soon as possible. It’s important to be weeding – er, editing – any work you put into print or on the air as thoroughly and carefully as possible. Because even ESPN listeners can be discerning grammatical gardeners. Conviction with character counts COMMENTARY By Becky Kapsalis Suppose your 12-year-old daughter was a very good soccer player on a team vying for a state championship, and suppose that same daughter also signed up for a (non-soccerrelated) youth camp. Then suppose the two schedules conflicted with one another, creating a major dilemma because both events were equally important to her. How do you suppose she handled it? If you’ve ever had this type of scheduling dilemma with any of your kids, you understand the emotional conflict. First, the young lady decided she really wanted to go to her youth camp. She wanted her mom to talk to her coach. Her mom said “This is something you need to do for yourself.” So the young girl mustered up the courage to tell her coach, explaining she didn’t want to let her team down but she only had this one chance to go to this youth camp. The coach, admirably, told her, “By all means go to the camp.” The next day, the coach approached her and let her know how much he appreciated her

Van Note of Carmel. As a retired Indy Car mechanic, Bob has experience the thrills of racing first-hand. He has always been fascinated by early Indy car designs. Bob explained, “It took me over a year to design and build the chassis.” His attention to detail and quality craftsmanship are evident in this spectacular replica. The original Marmon Wasp was the winning car for the inaugural 1911 Indianapolis 500 Race. Car driver and designer, Ray Harroun, completed his record setting win on May 30, 1911 with a total time of 6 hours, 42 minute and 8 seconds to complete 200 laps. The Wasp, so named for its distinctively sharp-pointed, wasp-like tail and its yellow and black color scheme, was

What to do when your dog gets overexcited before a walk COMMENTARY By John Mikesell You contemplate taking your dog for a walk with mixed emotions. When you pick up the leash, he becomes the Tasmanian Devil – bodyslamming you, racing around the foyer and bouncing off the walls. Hers are five suggestions for turning this into an enjoyable outing: 1. Exercise first. Spend 15 to 20 minutes tossing a ball for your dog in the backyard or some other sort of physical exercise before going out for a walk. You’ll take the edge off his excitement, reduce his energy level and make leashing up and walking more relaxed and enjoyable for both of you. 2. Teach him to “say please.” Reinforce your dog’s “sit” behavior so thoroughly that “sit” becomes his default behavior – the behavior he chooses to offer when he doesn’t know what else to do. Then wait for him to sit (say “please”) to make all good things happen: sit for you to throw his ball; sit for his dinner bowl; sit to be petted; sit to put his leash on; sit to make the door open. 3. Pick up his leash throughout the day. He gets amped up when you touch his leash, because it always means the two of you are going for a walk. Of course he gets excited! If you pick up his leash numerous times throughout the day, sometimes draping it over your neck and wearing it for awhile, sometimes carrying it from room to room, the leash will no longer be a reliable predictor of walks, and he won’t

have any reason to get excited. Note: This will take a while. Hope springs eternal in the canine heart. 4. Use negative punishment. No, that’s not a bonk on the head. It means setting up the situation so that doing the behavior you don’t want causes a good thing to go a way. If, when you pick the leash, he goes bonkers (the behavior you don’t want), say “Oops” in a cheerful tone of voice, set the leash down, and walk away. When he settles down pick up the the leash again. If he sits, proceed with the walk. 5. Reduce the significance of other “walk cues.” Other things you do as part of your walk preparation routine can also feed his energy – getting out treats, putting on your jacket, grabbing your cell phone and keys/ The more you randomize your ritual, the less these steps contribute to his growing excitement over the pending event, and the calmer he’ll stay as you leash him and walk out the door. PETS OF THE WEEK Stacia is a 4-year-old female American Staffordshire terrier/ American pit bull terrier mix. Stacia is a very sweet and loving girl who is spayed and house trained. Her previous owner surrendered her because they could no longer afford to care for her. They did say she was good with children, but in the shelter she has been nervous (understandably) so we feel she should go to a home with children age 10 or older. Stacia is good with other dogs, but she needs a feline-free home. Please visit her today, but be ready to get some kisses! Grayson is a 2-year-old male black and white DSH. Grayson arrived at the shelter on Dec. 29. His owner said he was the offspring of another pet and didn’t want him. We soon realized he was having pain in his hip and after an examination by a veterinarian the pain was caused from his hip popping out of joint; likely a birth defect. Should I upgrade to Office 2010? COMMENTARY By Gary Hubbard Microsoft’s Office Suite has become so ubiquitous that many people buying new computers just assume that it’s part of Windows, which it isn’t. Even though you’re using Office 2003 on your old computer and will likely have Windows 7 on your new computer, as long as you have the original disk, you can install and run Office 2003 on your new computer with no problem. If you want to upgrade, the costs may be about the same for either 2007 or 2010 depending upon when and where you buy your computer. The biggest complaint for those that have upgraded from Office 2003 to Office 2007 is the new navigation system known as the “ribbon,” which dramatically changes the way you work with the various programs. The actual menu system that has been in Office products from the beginning changed dramatically when Office 2007 was released. For those willing to work through the learning curve of the new interface, the general response is that it’s more useful. But I have yet to meet anyone who fell in love with the ribbon system from the beginning. Microsoft heard the uproar, so Office 2010 has more of the traditional menu system, intertwined with the new ribbon system so that it’s less traumatic. Other improvements of Office 2010 over 2007 include … • Paste preview: You can now preview text or graphics before you paste them in • Improved picture-editing tools: many more adjustments that

you can make to images on-the-fly (including background removal) • Better text effects in Word • Sparklines for Excel: Add mini charts inside of a cell to show trending of the adjacent data. • Easier embedding and editing of video in PowerPoint • Easy Web broadcasting of your PowerPoint presentations: Others can see your presentation via their Web browser. • Outlook gets social: You won’t have to switch to see your Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. feeds. • Outlook adds conversation view: See your e-mail messages as a conversation (like Gmail) instead of individual messages. • Better search tools throughout • Stronger security settings: Better tools to protect documents from unauthorized access and editing • Office Web apps: A limited online version for document sharing and calibration (to compete with Google Docs) In my opinion, if you’re going to upgrade, spend your money on Office 2010 so you get the benefit of what they learned from Office 2007’s issues. If you are an Office “power user,” you will likely appreciate the new features in Office 2010 more than someone that occasionally taps out a document, never or rarely uses Excel or has no need to create PowerPoint presentations.

Kitchen remodel including adjacent spaces COMMENTARY By Larry Greene BEFORE THE REMODEL: The homeowner recently moved into this 1990s-built home in the Bridlebourne development off Shelbourne Road in Carmel. The layout of the existing kitchen and adjoining first floor did not meet the owner’s needs. The homeowners actually enjoy cooking and preparing meals at home so they needed better functionality. They also required a secondary kitchen to assist the homeowner with a home-based baking business. The final issue was to remodel and update the adjoining laundry room, hall bathroom and hearth room. DESIGN PROCESS: The design phase started with the design of several overall schemes of the entire first floor to make sure the “flow” from room to room was just right. This process flushed out several new ideas that were appealing to the homeowner. In fact, this design process resulted in the reconfiguration of several walls. One of the most useful improvements was the creation of a large walk-in pantry that almost doubled in size from the previous version. PROJECT SCHEDULE: The design phase was split into two parts. The first part included the creation of several overall floor plan schemes.

Once the overall scheme was established, the homeowner moved on to selection of materials. Particular emphasis was spent on the design of the new island, range hood and secondary kitchen area. The design phase lasted five weeks, while construction was about eight weeks. FINAL DETAILS: A long narrow hallway in the kitchen was cut off and converted into the large walk-in pantry. Cicadas: Beware of the wasp COMMENTARY By Holly Funk While I am normally touted as an insect advocate, no single thing grosses me out quite like a cicada. Except maybe a cockroach. The sheer size of the cicada is probably the greatest influence of my dislike for the boisterous insect – so noisy, in fact, the male cicada is the loudest insect in the world. They are huge and black and have red eyes – not to mention the icky, brown exoskeletons they leave hanging around everywhere. What little boy hasn’t stuck one of those on a girl’s shirt, sending her shrieking? I know that wasn’t just me. Still, cicadas are an interesting lot. The immature cicada lives for many years in the soil at the base of trees and emerges to climb up the trunk and shed their crunchy, beige shell. The adults, then, camp out in trees and talk back and forth to each other until they find a mate (you know the rest). While that totally gives me the willies, someone else might flip over a bee, or wasp, and that just doesn’t really faze me. Not even one of the biggest wasps of all, the cicada killer wasp, (that’s right!) because it hunts down cicadas and makes baby food of them. Awesome. The cicada killer wasp is one scary looking

bug. At almost 2 inches long, it burrows in the ground to nest. Sandy areas are preferable, so garden beds with exposed soil and open areas are where you see them most. The male wasp will dive bomb and buzz you in defense but it is all buzz and no bite, as he has no stinger (typical). The female has the ability to sting but will only do so if trapped in a T-shirt or threatened seriously. She’s busy hunting down cicadas. Once she’s got her prey, she brings it to the nest and lays her eggs in it. When the babies hatch they devour the cicada for their first meal. Now, that’s a plan. The cicada killer, as with other bees and wasps, is deemed beneficial as they help to keep balance in the insect world, so, they rarely require control measures. I think it is so cool the way nature takes care of itself – and us. I don’t want to be overrun by cicada swarms. And while it can be quite alarming to cross paths with one of these wasps, especially if you happen to catch one carrying the cicada, it is actually just trying to care for its family. Poof! Make design problems disappear! Commentary By Vicky Earley A screen is like a veil: It hides what you want to hide while creating mystery and intrigue. Room screens have been around practically forever. The Chinese began using them as far back as 200 B.C, while the Japanese adopted them in the seventh century. Europeans lagged far behind in this decorating trend, as they did not embrace the screen until 1600s. The original screens were elaborate with intricate paintings and carvings. They functioned as art and status symbols. The screen has evolved into a life-form with a practical purpose: It is one of the most flexible interior design tools available. Screens are an outstanding alternative to altering the structure of your home. Folding screen room dividers are easily removable and storable when not needed, as they are a form of freestanding art and furniture. Screens can function as a room divider or decorative focal point, and they can be moved with every decorating whim. One of my favorite ways to use a gorgeous decorative screen is to tuck it behind a sofa in place of the expected picture behind a sofa. A screen is dimension, texture, color and interest – all in one decorating investment.

Spreading the exciting news out of Idaho COMMENTARY By Dick Wolfsie BOISE, Idaho - Police in Idaho think they might have solved a year-long condiment spree. Authorities say a 74-year-old woman was arrested after pouring mayonnaise in a library book drop box. She may be connected to nine other condiment-related crimes. The first thing I did when I read this news release was send the Idaho police a thank-you note for practically writing my column for me. You could watch every “Twilight Zone” episode, read every “Sherlock Holmes” short story ever written and see every Coen Brothers movie and I’m tellin’ you, the words “condiment-related crimes” is not going to pop up in any of them. This story was a gift from the people of Idaho who gave us the raw materials to make the French fry. Idaho’s nickname? The Gem State. Once again, they have delivered. Thank you. And now, let’s move on ... I’m basically an honest person, so I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about circumstances that might have led me to a life of crime. However, I’ve seen enough bad-guy movies to know that when you’re looking for shifty ways to make a living, the answer does not lie in a select variety of sauces. I did resist an early influence to be a crook. My mother was an unrepentant Sweet and Low thief, so I saw firsthand (and with sleight of hand) how easy it was to score big at White Castle or Steak ’n Shake. Mom seemed like a very nice person to some people, but those close to her knew that her sweet disposition was artificial. Apparently, the woman who defiled the books walked around with a backpack that concealed her two sandwich spreads of choice. The police could not legally stop and search her without a warrant or they would have violated her second condiment rights. It’s a pretty sad

day when it’s legal to own an Uzi, but a squeezy bottle of mayonnaise is suspect. The woman accused the police of profiling her, but when you leave a trail of Gulden’s Mustard packets behind you, this is considered probable cause. She was also detained at the airport for having more than two ounces of ketchup in her carry-on. The low-life in front of her? Box cutters and a Bowie knife in his raincoat. No problem. Welcome aboard. I do think pouring mayo down a book slot at a library is a serious offense. But judges should be able to use discretion in sentencing. Hellmann’s on Hemingway is just wrong, but Teriyaki on Dostoevsky does have a certain international flavor to it. This is a bad time for “Law and Order” to go off the air. All their stories are ripped from actual headlines and if we should have, say, a chutney-related murder, I don’t trust the people over at “CSI Las Vegas” to take the case seriously. Other than mayo in the return slot, news sources were reluctant to reveal the perp’s other nine condiment capers – possibly fearing that a wave of food-topping, copy-cat crimes would sprinkle the country. There was one leak: The woman did not use Worcestershire Sauce during the commission of any offense. The folks at Lea & Perrins could use this information. When you have a high sodium product, you really need to brag about its low crime rate. The woman was released, by the way, and put on probation. The judge thought she might be a flight risk, and sure enough, at last report she was on the lam. I hope she has some mint jelly in her purse.

See you in the funny papers COMMENTARY By Mike Redmond I guess we all saw where Little Orphan Annie is no longer in the newspapers, joining a long list of things that are no longer in the newspapers (including, in the case of the one where I used to work, news). I have to admit it gave me a bit of a twinge – not because I was an Annie fan, because I wasn’t. I’m a continuity fan. Annie and her dog Sandy were in the comics for 86 years, and I’m the kind of goof who hates to see the end of a string like that. And while I never was much for Little Orphan Annie (would it have been that much trouble to give the poor girl some eyes?) I have always been a big fan of comic strips. Even at my advanced years, opening the paper means I have to fight the old kidhood temptation to go first to the comics page, and later turn rather grudgingly to the news. Although in the case of my former paper, it IS kind of fun to see if they accidentally printed something interesting. Some of the earliest reading I can remember took place lying on my stomach on the living room floor, with the funny pages laid out before me. My first favorite strip was Alley Oop. Something about the adventures of a timetraveling caveman just got me where I lived. He carried a club, rode around on a dinosaur, had a smokin’ hot wife who ran around in a fur bathing suit, and visited the 20th century, where he would don business suits but leave out the shoes. My kinda guy. It didn’t hurt that he was easy to draw. I could impress all my friends with my clever portraits of Alley Oop, which were made more or less by drawing a square and giving it hair and a nose.

For a while, I was a huge fan of all the comic strips printed in the Indianapolis Times, based mostly on a passion for “Freckles and his Friends.” More than once I came to the dinner table and declared the Times to be the comics leader among Indianapolis’ three daily papers. And more than once I was sent to the kitchen with dinner by my father, an employee of the Indianapolis News. I acquired a lot of “must-read” strips – “Gasoline Alley,” “Dondi,” “Gordo,” “Moon Mullins,” “Rick O’Shay,” “The Phantom,” “Buz Sawyer,” “Steve Roper,” “Prince Valiant,” “The Little King,” “Henry,” “Miss Peach,” “L’il Abner,” “Peanuts,” “Blondie,” “Major Hoople,” “Andy Capp,” “Fred Bassett,” “Dennis the Menace,” ... it took three newspapers a day just to satisfy my habit. I was a 9-year-old with a cartoon monkey on his back. And then I discovered “Pogo.” The strip starring Walt Kelly’s philosophical possum and his goofball friends instantly shot to number one on my all time favorites list, where it remains to this day, followed closely by strips that came later: “Calvin and Hobbes,” “Bloom County” and “The Boondocks.” So many of them are gone now, and I can live with that. What else can you do? Times change, tastes change, technology changes. It’s the natural order of things. But even so, the passing of Annie from newspapers to the digital world strikes me as a loss, a little piece of us to which we must say “So long.” And we can’t even add, “See you in the funny papers.” Mike Redmond is an author, journalist, humorist and speaker. COMMENTARY By Bob Walters We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. – Preamble, U.S. Constitution “… Blessings of Liberty …” Did you catch that? “Blessings” – capitalized in the original – is a God and faith word, not a secular, non-faith word. It’s a word that assumes a Creator and more importantly assumes a relationship with that Creator. Yes, one could argue that a blessing can be as secularly simple as doing something nice for someone else, but that’s a good deed. One can also argue that all the nouns except “defence” are capitalized in the Preamble, but that’s grammar. I would argue that Blessings are God-inspired things, and that words like “Blessings” and “ordained” clue us into the intent of the Constitution’s framers – that for this grand venture of American democracy to succeed, God needed to be not only on our side, but in the very hearts of the republic’s newly empowered and free citizens. Given that Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and Benjamin Franklin were all more deist than conservative Christian, and that secular humanism was the philosophical fashion of the age

(and especially of the Founders), let’s not worry for now whether 18th century America was founded as a “Christian Country.” Let’s instead focus on the immense, frontierpenetrating Christian revival, the Second Great Awakening, that almost immediately followed our nation’s birth. Revival is when the Holy Spirit works to reveal the Gospel truth of Jesus Christ. And regardless of the “Christian Country” debate, America with its unbridled freedom was surely a nation of unlimited personal opportunity, an unimaginably vast expanse of land, and with no establishment church, previously unknown religious openness. Americans proved thirsty for the Gospel message. In many ways we were a people without tradition. New directions and snap judgments fueled the ferocious growth of the nation. The population physically grew away from the Protestant religious establishments of the East. The independent pioneers went west, and independent Bible preachers followed. The Holy Spirit knew the opportunity was ripe to shine the light on Jesus Christ from sea to shining sea. The old rules were left behind, and Bible revival was on.
