OUR VIEWS
It is our position that the Carmel Marathon Championship Weekend, coming June 2011, is a brilliant opportunity for the citizens of Hamilton County. With 45,000 runners, plus tens of thousands family and spectators visiting downtown Indianapolis for the biggest mini-marathon in the country in May, the Carmel Road Racing Group (CRRG) is strategically staging its three-day event five weeks later. From a flat, fast Marathon and Mini Marathon to a 1-mile family fitness walk to a special 8K event offering a national championship level purse, this event is sure to appeal to every category of runner or walker. Carmel’s Monon Center will serve host for the two-day expo prior to race day and the courses have been designed to highlight Hamilton County including the Arts & Design District, Parks and other attractions. With the 60-70 percent of runners and spectators coming from outside of Hamilton County, this event has the potential to have a seven-figure impact on our community in the first year. The CRRG also recently announced this inaugural, nationally recognized running experience as one of two finalists for the USATF 2011 National Championship 8K.
Goes both ways
It is our position that countries who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Recently, the President of Mexico, on a visit to our country, criticized the controversial Arizona law regarding U.S. immigration. That decree requires citizens who are stopped for illegal activity, if deemed necessary, to show documentation of immigration status and fully reflects existing federal law. Rarely have visiting dignitaries spit in the face of a host government’s hospitality. In Mexico, law enforcement officials are allowed to spot check anyone suspected of illegal status to provide documentation. The National Human Rights Commission issued a report summarizing the large numbers of migrants who are routinely kidnapped and held for ransom with the participation of the state. It is common practice to stop and shake down for bribes those entering without proper documentation. Racial profiling and harassment of American migrants is common. The Arizona law has reenergized the debate about immigration. Good. That Americans are clearly divided on the subject does not hand stones to those other nations all-too willing to sling them our way.

From the backshop Kick it into high gear for Numa! By every account, Westfield Rocks the 4th was a terrific success. We’re not surprised. Our city knows how to pull it together to make things happen. Now what we need to have happen is a massive turnout for the Numa festival this September. There was some grumbling last year about “down attendance,” and that’s not on the organizers, but rather on the citizens. Look, folks are working hard to incorporate art of all sorts into the growth of Westfield. We urge you to support this festival and everything else going on in the city. We, again, will sponsor the event and will do our best to promote it in different ways. Join us, please. As David Letterman says, “Wake the dog, phone the neighbors.” Help us help the festival by starting to talk about it now. ••• Tickets to the Westfield Mayor’s Yellow Tie Ball last Friday night at The Bridgewater Club were in such high demand that there was a massive waiting list. Mayor Andy Cook’s event to raise money for the new Westfield Youth Assistance Program is gaining tremendous steam in its third year, and The Bridgewater always puts on a marvelous evening for
Brian Kelly & Steve Greenberg attendees. Other mayors in Hamilton County should take note. Benevolence is a wonderful thing! ••• This actually was demanded by an out-oftown customer at the Marathon station at Ind. 32 and U.S. 31 during the recent holiday weekend: “I want a refund for the difference,” she said. The young woman had noticed a decline in gas prices overnight and wanted seven cents per gallon given back to her per the quantity she bought the night before. We listened carefully as the attendant politely told her to move along, and then we looked at her license plates as she drove away. Michigan. Displaced union worker?
Bountiful harvest COMMENTARY By Terry Anker Through a series of happy coincidences, I was invited to join Keira Amstutz, president of the Indiana Humanities Council, to accompany her on a trip to our own Fair Oaks Farm. A bastion of what modern farming can be, Fair Oaks is a sprawling dairy complex in the northwestern quadrant of our fine state that, I am told, manages to produce enough milk to serve one glass of fresh milk to every citizen in the area each day every year. Including cities like Indianapolis, Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit, that number mounts into the tens of millions. Likewise, the farm produces some of the most honored craft cheeses found on the planet. Our mission was to talk with the amiable operator of the massive facility, Gary Corbett, about the Council’s much-lauded biennial program, Food for Thought. A Hoosier farm-boy myself, I have seen abundant changes in American agriculture in my lifetime.
Families, unable to compete with rising costs and restrictive government management of farms, started with second (or third) jobs away from the homestead to earn enough hard currency to pay taxes and afford the now-assumed basics of the modern age. Even as we watched a calf being born in Fair Oak’s amphitheater-like room, I was reminded that agriculture is just that – culture. We Hoosiers benefit from a deeply rooted and storied past of producing sustenance. We feed ourselves, and we feed the world. But, do we remember in the age of satellite broadcasts and global warfare that the Earth – and those who encourage her bounty – provides a way of living as much as she provides life itself? The culture of sharing bounty assuredly may be our greatest heritage. Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. You may e-mail him at terry@ currentincarmell.com.

COMMENTARY By Danielle Wilson As some of you may recall, I am cold and dead inside. At least that’s what my husband and I like to say about my relative lack of feelings. I rarely cry in private and NEVER in public, I avoid hugs and outward displays of affection with everyone except my kids, and I get extremely uncomfortable when I am forced to deal with someone in emotional distress. In fact, I usually laugh at awkward moments, even at funerals. My husband Doo is the passionate, spontaneous one in our relationship, and I am the stoic, dependable rock. He’s the classic extravert who gets invigorated from crowds, and I’m the introvert who needs alone time in a dark quiet room to function. Together we make a great team, but lately I’ve wondered if maybe something really is dead inside of me, like my heart perhaps? I’m joking of course, but I have been paying serious attention this last month in an attempt to figure out why I act the way I do and if there is some way I can move closer to being a “normal” female. Not just for Doo’s sake, but for my entire family. Most of them need physical contact as a sign of love, and I am terrible at providing it. It drives Doo crazy, and I know it probably also hurts the other “huggers” I’m close to, like my mom and motherin-law. So here’s what I’ve been working on over the past few weeks. On the advice of counsel and starting only with my husband, I am forcing myself out of my very comfortable comfort zone. I sit right next to Doo on the couch when watching TV, I play footsies with him at the table, I even hug him and rub his back when he gets home from work. I won’t lie, it sucks the life out of

me to make this amount of physical contact, especially at the end of a long day, but it does actually seem to be improving our marriage. All these years of my waiting for my husband to stop acting selfish and earn my affection was a big fat waste of time. It wasn’t him, it was me. All I needed to do was change myself and my actions and, voila! Instant romance. Because now that his emotional needs are being met, he’s been much more attuned to my needs, like laundry and help with the kids and downtime. We finally feel like we are headed in the right direction together instead of just crossing paths occasionally. How long will this last? Who knows, but I have to say it is becoming a bit easier to express affection. I’m not ready to be embracing my neighbors yet, but I don’t feel anxious anymore at the thought of giving my sister-in-law a big fat hug when she’s having a postpartum meltdown at the kitchen sink. I’ll never be as passionate as my husband and will probably always be introverted, but I think I can handle this more outwardly-loving-woman thing for a while longer. It’s kind of cool. So what's the moral of today's story, boys and girls? You can always reinvent yourself. If you find something you don't like, then change it. A new attitude, a new body, even a new way of expressing emotions; if you want to be a better you, then take the steps to make it happen. Even if it's painful, like when someone gives me an impromptu hug (yuck), change can be good. Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a Carmel resident and contributing columnist. Westfield Rocks a success; 2011 event being discussed By Brandon Bowman Current in Westfield The sun and the heat didn’t stop Westfield residents from making the inaugural Westfield Rocks the 4th a huge success. The event exceeded the expectations of everyone involved. Melody Jones with the Westfield Parks Department said an estimated 10,000 people came to Asa Bales Park for the event. “At the end of the day, I needed a shower, but I’m very happy with how it turned out,” Jones said. The fireworks display was the most talked about thing from Westfield Rocks the 4th. “The Mayor was telling me that he expected it to be good, but he went on to say it far exceeded his expectations,” Jones said. The winner of the talent show was Post Script, a jam band from Indianapolis that has been together since 2007. The band received $2,500 and 10 hours of studio time for winning the competition. Duke Tumatoe played after the talent show. “The whole park was full of people when
Duke Tumatoe was playing and that was an amazing sight to see,” Jones said. “A lot of us were hugged by strangers and thanked plenty of times for starting this event in Westfield.” Submitted photo The next Westfield Rocks is already being discussed, Jones said, and it will include some additional features. At the very least, she said next year’s event will need misting stations to help keep attendees cool. Jones added that, as cars stopped on U.S. 31 to take in the fireworks display, it was obvious to her that this is an event that Westfield residents can expect to only get bigger and better in the years to come. The people who made the event possible were the volunteers who worked through the stifling heat and humidity at Westfield Rocks the 4th. Adam O’Cull volunteered at Westfield Rocks the Fourth and went home with a 32-inch flat screen television. “Everyone who worked a two hour shift got chance to win the television,” Jones said. “The only way we can do events like this is to have volunteers,” Jones said.
Fourth of a July in Westfield a big hit Commentary By Ken Kingshill By all accounts, Westfield Rocks the Fourth was a resounding success. Congratulations to all those who had a hand in making it happen. Westfield has been thirsting for such an event for a decade or so. We had our own Summerfest for several years back in the late ‘90s, but for reasons I’m not aware, that run came to an abrupt end. It was nice to stroll through Asa Bales Park on July 4, seeing people enjoy the food vendors, the kids’ area, and the battling bands on the stage. There were martial arts protégés in their white uniforms, cub scouts in their blue shirts and neckerchiefs and folks of every age sporting red, white and blue. And you couldn’t miss all the volunteers, wearing their pale yellow tee shirts. I’m sure in coming years there will be even more attractions and more visitors. Across the street, in the high school parking lot, there were rows of cool cars and motorcycles on display. They certainly seemed to attract a lot of attention. I did my time in the dunk tank. Lucky for me, Police Chief Joel Rush, uniform and all, and Oak Trace Elementary School Principle Robin Lynch wore out the arms of all the kids before it was my turn. However, much to my dismay, I discovered karate kids have good arms after all. I’m told that in the evening before the

fireworks show, it was quite something to witness Keltie mastering the Rotary Club’s popcorn machine, successfully accommodating the long lines of people wanting a snack. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see popcorn pop up on her menu somehow. In the evening, Duke Tumatoe was a hit as one would expect. And then there were the fireworks! Enough said. With small, incremental steps, we’re bringing excitement to Westfield. Civic activities provide a sense of community. That sense of community then turns to pride. And there isn’t much better for a fledgling city than a healthy dose of civic pride. City Councilor Ken Kingshill is a Westfield resident and Realtor. The Fourth rocked in Westfield Westfield's inaugural July 4 celebration, Westfield Rocks the Fourth, was held at Asa Bales Park. The all-day event featured a Battle of the Bands competition, a classic car show, a performance by Duke Tumatoe and the Power Trio and, of course, fireworks. Attendance for the first-ever Westfield Rocks exceeded expectations, and ideas to improve the event are currently being discussed Photos by the city of Westfield and Kevin Kane

Driven by a dream Westfield's Laura McKamey and Hayli Hodsdon are training to overcome their respiratory diseases and run the New York City Marathon By Elizabeth Noel Current in Westfield When Laura McKamey and Hayli Hodsdon were assigned to room with each other last year at the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio, they did not know much about one another. Now, the two best friends share everything together, including different respiratory diseases and one big dream—running the ING New York City Marathon. “We're compatible in every way,” Hodsdon said. “If I'm having a bad day, she's always having a good one to pull me up. It's almost like we were meant to meet each other, like soul mates.” McKamey, a sophmore majoring in early childhood education, has had asthma her whole life while junior social work student Hodsdon has battled cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder that causes thick mucus to build up and clog organs of the body, particularly the lungs and the digestive tract. Despite their health issues, the roommates have decided to run the ING New York City Marathon on November 7. The girls, who previously thought their physical limitations would inhibit them from accomplishing such a feat, are now training five days a week to prepare for the 26.2-mile landmark that has already changed their lives. “It's a long process. We weren't runners before this, so we had to start from scratch,” McKamey said. McKamey and Hodsdon are running to raise money for the
About the race The 2010 ING New York City Marathon will be held Nov. 7. Each year, the 26.2-mile race attracts more than 100,000 applicants, 2 million cheering spectators and 315 million television viewers worldwide. A prize of $600,000 goes to the winner. Learn more at www.ingnycmarathon.org.

Hayli Hodsdon (left) and Laura McKamey ran their first long-distance race ever in the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon in May. Hodsdon suffers from cystic fibrosis and McKamey has asthma, but the two hope to inspire others with similar afflictions by running the New York City Marathon
Boomer Esiason Foundation, an organization that aims to heighten awareness of cystic fibrosis, stimulate research, and improve the quality of life for those affected by it. Hodsdon, who received a college scholarship from this foundation, came across this idea after being hospitalized several times throughout the first semester last year. “It was a really stressful time for Hayli emotionally because she felt like she was really beaten down by her disease,” McKamey said. “She wanted to come up with a way to overcome it and do so in a way that inspired others. Once we started training, we got really excited and realized how great this would be.” Though it started out as a whim, the girls have already accomplished more than they imagined, both physically and financially.

They ran the Indianapolis Mini Marathon in May, and together they have raised about $3,000 for “Team Boomer,” more than half of the total that they need for the foundation. Of course, training has not been easy for the ambitious McKamey and Hodsdon. McKamey's asthma kicks in during exercise, and the summer heat and humidity increase its severity. Hodsdon is susceptible to lung infections and must constantly monitor her breathing and nebulize before and after running, making early morning runs difficult. “Sometimes it's a struggle. We both have bad days and both have good days,” McKamey said. “On our bad days, we just relax, encourage each other, and say keep going.” Despite their difficulties and apprehensions, the unshakeable duo remains confident and knows that running the New York City marathon will be worth the hard work. “Since I started running, I've been much healthier,” said Hodsdon. “It's been hard on my body, but we have also both benefited so much just from the confidence and motivation it has given us. I know we'll be so proud of ourselves when we finish.” When they cross the finish line on November 7, Hodsdon and McKamey say they will not just be doing it for themselves or for the Boomer Foundation, but for everyone with similar afflictions. Along with their personal gains and fund raising, the girls hope to inspire others by doing what they once thought was impossible. “I just want to encourage people to try something that seems precarious,” said McKamey. “Even if you have physical limitations, you never know what you can do until you try.”

Clay Terrace ceremony to kick off World Series tomorrow By Danielle Turnbull Current in Westfield “The Greatest Show on Dirt” will return to Hamilton County this month, and Clay Terrace will help celebrate the arrival of the phenomenon this year. The Continental Amateur Baseball Association (C.A.B.A.) World Series starts tomorrow and Clay Terrace is hosting the opening ceremony for the first time along with a series of events in its honor July 14 through 17. The C.A.B.A. will hold 14 different World Series tournaments this year, each one for a different age group, and teams from nine different countries will participate in the events. Westfield will host the age-10-and-under tournament and age-13-and-under tournament, respectively, but the two events will kick off with the ceremonies in Carmel. Clay Terrace became involved in the World Series event when the Roundtripper Baseball Academy in Westfield requested the outdoor shopping center’s help with the ceremony in December. “They were looking at doing something different,” said Catherine Fisher, director of mar-
keting at Clay Terrace. Although it is the first opening ceremony at Clay Terrace, plenty is planned for the first days of the tournament. It all kicks off with a parade for the teams, followed by a speaker, concessions and a movie, “Little Big League,” under the stars. It’s a way to welcome the boys to the area, Fisher said. The event is for the general public, but also serves as a place for the teams to spend time when they are not playing. “We encourage people to attend,” Fisher said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.” Along with encouraging people to attend, Fisher also said that players are encouraged to bring a community flavor to the event, like a banner of flag, for the opening ceremony. Fisher also said that she feels that the event is good for the Carmel and Westfield communities. It will help economically because 120 teams are coming into Carmel and staying in hotels, shopping and taking in entertainment in the community. But the event will also promote the two cities across the country and beyond. The conclusion of the celebration will occur

Book OF THE WEEK
Caliban’s Shore: The Wreck of the Grosvenor and the Strange Fate of Her Survivors By Stephen Taylor In the 18th century, the East India Company possessed a fleet of merchant vessels for trading between India and England. The journey took several months and was fraught with danger. More than one ship crashed on the rocks off the eastern coast of Africa due to the primitive state of navigation, including the Grosvenor, which was wrecked Aug. 4, 1782. Most of the crew and passengers survived the crash and reached the shore, though most did not survive the trek to the Dutch settlements further south. The book describes various groups of people and what they did after landing on the African shore. Some eventually reached the Dutch settlements in southern Africa on foot, and a few returned to England, where their testimony of events was taken. There was much speculation regarding the women and children who had been on the ship and what might have happened to them. Many years later, visitors to the area of the wreck discovered people living there who claimed to be descended from white people who came from the water. Since there had been castaways from more than one ship over a period of years, it was difficult to verify which of the Grosvenor’s passengers may have lived out the rest of their lives among the natives of the east African shore. In this well-researched and historical narrative, Stephen Taylor, author of several books on Africa, relates a story of shipwreck and survival. Caliban, a character in Shakespeare’s play The Tempest, evidently came to mind as the author researched this celebrated wreck. SUMMER CHILL RECIPE
WEST COAST GRILLED VEGETABLE PIZZA
mixed berry ice pops
Ingredients • 3 tbsp. olive oil • Allpurpose flour, for shaping dough • 1 lb. storebought pizza dough, fresh, or thawed if frozen • 2 plum tomatoes, thinly sliced crosswise • 2 scallions, white and green parts separated, thinly sliced • 1 log (5-oz.) soft goat cheese, crumbled • Coarse salt • Ground pepper • 1 bag(s) (5-oz.) baby spinach • 1 avocado, halved, pitted, peeled, and diced • 2 tbsp. red-wine vinegar
Directions 1. Heat grill to medium. Brush a large rimless baking sheet (or an inverted rimmed sheet) with 1 tablespoon oil. On a lightly floured work surface, roll and stretch dough to two 8-inch ovals or rounds. Transfer to prepared sheet. Brush tops with 1 tablespoon oil. 2. Transfer dough to grill. Cook, without turning over, until undersides are firm and begin to char, 2 to 3 minutes. Using tongs and a large spatula, place crusts on baking sheet, grilled side up. 3. Scatter crusts with tomatoes, scallion whites, and cheese; season with salt and pepper, and slide back onto grill. Cook, rotating occasionally, until cooked through and cheese begins to melt, 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board. 4. In a medium bowl, combine spinach, avocado, scallion greens, vinegar, and remaining tablespoon oil; season with salt and pepper, and toss to combine. Pile mixture onto pizzas; halve, and serve.
Most ice pops are just water and sugar with some artificial flavoring thrown in; even those made with juice sometimes contain high fructose corn syrup! Our easy all-natural version captures the taste of fresh berries--and their nutrients as well. Ingredients • 2/3 cup fresh blueberries • 30 small fresh mint leaves • 1 1/3 cups raspberries • 1 1/2 cups seltzer • 2 tbsp light floral honey, such as acacia • 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice (1 lemon)
Directions 1. Fill six ice pop molds evenly with blueberries, then mint, then raspberries 2. Stir together seltzer, honey, and lemon juice gently in measuring cup until honey dissolves. Pour very slowly over berries and mint. (Note: There should be about a half inch of space at the top of each mold to allow for expansion during freezing. Adjust liquid accordingly.) Insert handles/sticks into molds. 3. Freeze at least four hours -www.recipes.prevention.com

Using ‘as needed’ pain medications correctly COMMENTARY By Dmitry Arbuck It is a horrible idea to take narcotic pain medications every time you have pain. Pain medications such as Tylenol, Advil and others relieve pain in, by far, the majority of cases without need in narcotics. For many chronic pain patients, narcotic pain medications become a crutch with which a person is obsessed. “As needed” pain medications by definition are designed to be given only occasionally. If they are prescribed up four times as needed, it does not mean that the patient has to take it four times every day. If that is done, such medication becomes a scheduled medication instead of as needed and loses its purpose. If medication is given 3-4 times a day, it means that one day only one pill may be taken, another day three or four pills may be taken, and another day nothing is taken. This is the appropriate way of managing “as needed” narcotic pain medications. In between, the same Tylenol and Advil may

Calcium supplements: Plant or rock? COMMENTARY By Laura Marenco Many of us take a calcium supplement to make sure our diet is sufficient or to prevent osteoporosis later in life. But are all calcium supplements really the same, and is calcium just calcium? It is not widely known, but most calcium supplements on the market are made from milling limestone or marble and selling it as calcium carbonate, essentially chalk in tablet form. Other manufacturers take it another step and formulate the calcium mineral into calcium citrate, with the idea it is more absorbable. Contrary to popular belief, both calcium carbonate and calcium citrate have nearly the same absorption, about 30 percent, if taken with meals So, does it make sense, then, to buy the cheapest calcium supplement you can find? Well, there appears to be more to this now. In recent years, another supplement has appeared: calcium derived from algae. This new form is purported have greater bio-availability over other supplements that focus on only absorption of the mineral into our bodily fluids. The plant source provides predigested calcium that is bound in a natural food form by proteins so that the calcium will be more bio-available for synthesis.
be taken if it is not contraindicated. As I mentioned above, in the majority of cases, it will work no less or even better than narcotics. As we discussed in earlier articles, patients need to remember that after taking any shortacting medication and initial improvement, the withdrawal and rapid decrease in drug level follows, making the situation worse. This produces yo-yo destabilizing effect and results in craving for another dose. On top of that, patients may develop an incredible psychological dependence on “pill popping” and become slaves to pills, needing constantly to boost their condition by taking yet another and another dose. Such people live in constant fear that they might run out of medication and end up overusing their medication.
Very recently, calcium supplements were studied by researchers from the Harvard Medical School and University of Connecticut, and the results are published in the July 2010 issue of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. In this study, the scientists compared the effects of algae calcium with calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. The researchers studied the effects of calcium absorbed from these supplements on human osteoblast cells, the cells responsible for bone formation. Their studies showed that algae calcium increased DNA synthesis, a measure of the ability to form new bone-building cells, by 300 percent over calcium carbonate and 400 percent more effective than calcium citrate. Algaederived calcium was significantly more effective than either of the two most popular calcium salt supplements, and, interestingly enough, calcium citrate performed the worst. So when it comes to getting the best calcium supplement for your health, the primary question now may be, is it from rock or plant life? We all ‘live in the moment’ every day COMMENTARY By David Cain Everyone has heard the phrase “live in the moment,” but have you ever really thought about it? Actually, there is a lot more truth to the phrase than you might expect. We actually live in the past, calling on our memories for most of our decisions. Almost everything we do as humans is based on our memory. We scan it for the familiar and we use our past to make decisions about our future. And most of this happens on a subconscious level. Is it any surprise that we repeat our behavior? Is it any surprise that our past actions are the best predictor of our future actions? Feel like you always end up in the same type of relationship? Feel like you married your dad or mom? Feel like you make the same decisions again and again? We look for the familiar in our archived memory and make decisions that are comfortable. Experience is what happened in the last five seconds. After that, we tuck the experience away in our brain and it becomes a memory. We store our whole life as a catalog of problems, issues, outcomes and observations in our mental library. And what do you suppose are the most common memories that we call up from the past?
Emotionally charged experiences are the easiest for us to remember. Do you remember where you were Sept.11, 2001? How about what you did on September 12 and 13? Do you remember your first car? How about your fourth car? When there are emotions tied to the experience, they are remembered more vividly. And that applies to any type of emotion. If there is emotion, there is a greater chance of being remembered. When you talk to anyone from customers and coworkers to your spouse and children, you can create emotion and more easily stand out. That emotion can be as simple as telling a story to make your point or showing an example that has meaning to them. That emotion can also be simply getting excited about what you do and what you are saying. It’s surprising how captivating and memorable it can be to listen to someone that is genuinely passionate. Just remember, excitement is contagious and emotion is memorable. David Cain works at MediaSauce, a digital media and online marketing company in Carmel. Type: Traditional Age: Built in 1991 Location: Near Smokey Row and Gray roads Neighborhood: Smokey Knoll is an established neighborhood with mature trees and homes built in the mid-1980s to early 1990s. Square footage: 3,900, including 752 in the finished basement Rooms: This four-bedroom home has a family room, main-floor office, formal dining room and finished basement. Strengths: This home has an attractive curb appeal, brick-wrapped exterior, screened-in porch, deck, in-ground pool and a fully-fenced backyard. This is a very attractive price point for a house of this size in a desirable neighborhood in Carmel. Challenges: The in-ground pool could deter buyers who do not want the added maintenance. Many competing listings in this price range offer three-car garages, while this home has a two-car garage sideload garage.

The original “Duetto” was in production from 1966–1967; this particular car was the model featured in the 1967 movie “The Graduate.” The Series 2 Spider was produced from 1970 to 1982. The Series 3 ran from 83-90, and the Series 4 from 90-93. Only 150 Series 4’s were sold with the ZF automatic and bring a premium. Parts are readily available and there is a strong club network for support. Alfa Romeos are very well engineered and easy to repair. Prices are on the rise as Alfa Romeo is set to reenter the U.S. Market in the next couple of years. Nicely restored early Duettos have already hit the $30,000 mark, and Series 4’s with low mileage can top $20,000. Generally speaking

Alfa romeo spider COMMENTARY By Shawn Miller The Alfa Romeo Spider (105/115 series) is a roadster produced from 1966 to 1993 and it is widely regarded as a design classic. It remained in production for almost three decades with only minor aesthetic and mechanical changes, and the last Spider was produced in April 1993. The car was unnamed at its launch in the 1966 Geneva Motor Show in 1966, and the name “Duetto” was chosen in a write-in competition in Italy.
It’s not about the fitness but the fun you have with it. That’s what Revel Fitness is all about. The new exercise studio opened May 15, and with each week, more customers are coming through the door. The mother-son team of Cindy Schembre and Robby Huang started the studio following Huang’s return from working in New York. Huang wanted to start the studio and asked for his mother’s help, who has taught dance classes in the past. Revel primarily provides Zumba fitness classes to its clients, but starting tomorrow, will also provide yoga classes. Zumba is a type of exercise that combines Latin dance moves and music with fitness. Aside from the fitness aspect, Revel is also about becoming a member of the community. Schembre and Huang make sure that each person in each class knows the names of everyone else in it. They want people to be comfortable working out and to enjoy their fitness routines. It’s all about the fun.

Series 2 and 3 cars can be had in decent shape for under $5,000, with exceptional examples topping $10,000. Look for these prices to rise rapidly in the near future. The Alfa Romeo Spider is the most stylish and well engineered small roadster from the era, a true classic that can be had on the cheap, but not for long. Pass the dictionary, please COMMENTARY By Brandie Bohney I don’t know about you, but I had a fabulous Fourth of July weekend. Of course, I can barely move because my behind hurts from agreeing to go tubing with my thrill-seeking 6-year-old, and my legs aren’t working well because I thought I could ride a Sea-doo like someone 10 years my junior. Still, the lake never fails to disappoint in terms of fun. Or grammar faux pas. It was another sign. No nudists or donuts in flapper dresses, but a homophone issue. I know, I know. I’ve railed against homophones before. But this was not exactly an average case of mistaken identity. This time, the sign had a hilariously incorrect homophone mix-up (not just the standard obnoxious kind). FLEE MARKET Not only should you run away from the market, as the sign indicates, but it also gives you a suggested direction. Fabulous! A lot of homophones out there can make you look ridiculous. Imagine being told authorities are chasing down a cereal killer or that Jonah was a profit. You’d wind up reaping what you sew and eventually selling your sole. Seriously, though, folks, as funny as I found this sign, I’m pretty sure the creator didn’t intend to send people hurriedly away from the market as if they were part of Monty Python’s
PLUS...
“Holy Grail” film. And that’s why a dictionary is one of the handiest resource materials you can have on hand. I’m a fan of dictionary.com because it lists entries from several difference dictionaries. In addition, avoiding homophone confusion is made easier with the internet. Yes, the Internet. If you use a word you aren’t certain you’ve spelled correctly, you can look the word up in the dictionary to determine if you have spelled it correctly or if it’s the correct word at all. Many dictionaries will list words commonly confused for the entry word, but some do not. If you find you have the wrong word or spelling and you dictionary doesn’t list alternatives, you can do a quick search – using whichever search engine you are most comfortable with – for the word and homophone: flee homophone. Voila! More than 90,000 sites giving you direction for your homophone difficulty. And that’s just for that one word. Imagine what you can do with wear, stare, fair, and bare. At least it won’t send you fleeing from the market. Brandie Bohney is a grammar enthusiast and former English teacher. COMMENTARY By Becky Kapsalis More often than not, our teenagers relish their independence, mostly to test themselves or prove to us and them they are capable of making decisions on their own. We, naturally, trust that they will rely on their roots when confronted with potentially compromising choices. For that to happen, I’ve compiled a list of declarations for teens that can act as a reference and reminder that they are welcome to their independence as long as they understand the responsibility and possible consequences. Ask your teen which of the following they agree with. • I declare this is the only mind and body I will ever have. I need to honor and respect them. • I declare I have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. • I declare that if I am able to have all the advantages and opportunities available to me, I need to be a law-abiding citizen. • I declare that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome will more than likely diminish

Don’t risk over-crating your puppy COMMENTARY By John Mikesell A properly used crate can be the answer to your housetraining prayers. I am very lucky in that I can take my dog to work with me, and she is a rescue that has been potty trained. If you are a normal person whose boss frowns at dogs at work, you simply can’t crate your pup all day while you’re gone The dog will be forced to eliminate in his crate, breaking down his inhibitions against soiling his own den – the very inhibitions you rely on to be able to accomplish housetraining. A general rule of thumb is that puppies can “hold it” during the day for up to one hour longer than they are months old. In other words, your 8-week-old baby dog can be crated for perhaps up to three hours during the day. They can usually go somewhat longer at night, because metabolism slows, but it’s a rare 2-month old that can go through the night without a potty break. So,you can only crate your pup during an eight-hour workday if you can arrange for at least two bathroom breaks. One quick trip run home at lunch won’t be enough, at least not until he’s five to six months old. In addition to performing necessary bodily functions, a growing pup needs to move around to develop properly. Some run-around time during the day helps him develop mentally and phyiscally, practicing skills and learning lessons he can’t make up later in life. Finally, a pup who spends his entire day in a

crate stores up mental and phyical energy. You come home tired at the end of the day, and your pup is ready to play. The relationship suffers, and the pup gets regulated to the back yard, alone – or worse, put back in the crate. While adult dogs are more physically capable of “holding it” for extended periods than puppies, it is still not appropriate for a dog to be routinely crated for 10 hours. Make sure your dog’s crate is large enough to enable him to turn around easily and sleep in his preferred position and contains enough bedding to keep him comfortable. Don’t ignore developing behavior problems when crating your dog; most won’t improve “on their own.” Act quickly to implement an appropriate solution – before his tolerance or affinity for the crate is gone.

How to make Gmail your default mail program COMMENTARY By Gary Hubbard It’s really convenient to be able to click an e-mail address on a Web page and have it open a new message (or the “compose” option) so you can jump right in to create a message. It’s equally irritating to click on an address and have it open a program you don’t use, such as Outlook Express or Outlook, when you want to use a Webbased service like Gmail or Yahoo. If you use Internet Explorer, it’s no surprise the only options you can choose are for Microsoft’s email programs (Outlook and Outlook Express) or Web-based services (Windows Live Mail or Hotmail). There are some messy options for making Internet Explorer (and the Send To: option in Word) open Gmail or Yahoo Mail that I will discuss later, but let’s start with some easier options. If you switch to a different browser like Mozilla’s Firefox or Google’s Chrome, it’s a simple matter of changing the default mail setting to Gmail. In Firefox, click on the “tools” menu, then on “options,” then on the “applications” tab at the top. If you use more than one e-mail program for different accounts, you can also set the option to “always ask.” Oddly, if you use Google’s Chrome browser, having the ability to choose Google’s Gmail as your default mail system is not part of the basic browser. You must add a free “extension” such as “Google Mail Checker Plus.” As I said earlier, you can add a third-party program to Internet Explorer to make Gmail the default, but I’m more of a minimal-
ist when it comes to software, so I would only recommend going this route if you really need to force Internet Explorer to use Gmail (or other Web mail systems). Affixa Basic is a free program you can download and install to change how Windows handles the default e-mail issue for ALL installed programs, so not only will it work when you click on an e-mail address online, it will also interact with other Microsoft programs. For instance, if you are in Microsoft Word and want to e-mail a document from within Word (usually the Send To: or Send option depending upon which version you are using), once you install Affixa Basic, Gmail will become the default mail system that will be launched. As I’ve written in the past, there are significant advantages to migrating to a Web-based e-mail system. (Example: You’re no longer tied to a specific computer to get your precious messages, and backup is no longer your problem). So, if you decided to not try Web mail in the past because of this one inconvenience, you now have no reason not to give it a shot!

Following the trends in kitchen countertops Question: We would like to upgrade our existing kitchen laminate countertops. What are the pros and cons of the most popular options, and what trends are you seeing in our market? COMMENTARY By Larry Greene Answer: As kitchens have become the “hub” of the home, it’s more important than ever that the countertops be durable but also look good visually. One of the biggest trends in today’s kitchens is the use of multiple countertop materials in the same kitchen. The island may have a different material than the perimeter. Consider the following options: Acrylic solid surface: Solid-surface materials made from manufacturers like Corian, Staron and HiMacs are very durable and cost less than granite or quartz. Solid surface tops allow for built-in integral sinks and suppliers have recently introduced new updated colors with translucent particles that look more like real stone. Granite: Although the maintenance concern with granite is often exaggerated, it is true that

granite is porous and does need a sealer to be applied periodically. The appeal of granite is the look of natural stone and the fact that each slab is somewhat different. Upgrading to more detailed edges with granite is expensive, as it must be done by hand labor. Quartz: Quartz is rapidly gaining ground
on other options. This material is typically 93 percent natural quartz and is scratch resistant. It is non-porous, so it does not need sealing and is stain resistant. A big difference between quartz and granite is the color consistency you get with quartz due to the fact that it’s man-made. Quartz is similar in cost to granite but is usually
about 10 percent more than standard granite colors. Other materials for countertops: Other choices to add interest in the kitchen include countertops made from hardwood like mahogany, recycled glass, concrete and hammered copper. These options can be used for an accent on the island or for the entire kitchen area. Larry Greene is owner of Case Handyman & Remodeling. For extended flowering give your plants a trim Commentary By Holly Funk With a good deal of the summer behind us now, a lot of flowers are looking a bit gangly. With the heat and the rain, they’ve been working overtime…and the sad part is, it’s soon to be August, infamously hotter and muggier, and finding a fresh flat of annuals is simply out of the question. Besides that, we can’t just give up on them. And what about the perennials? They look exhausted, too. We can’t just replace them when they begin to slack. We’ve got to revive these poor things with a little trimming. Don’t we all feel better with a fresh haircut? All plants respond to trimming in the same way; they put out new growth. If we give them a little trimming now and wait a few weeks, we can celebrate the fall months with lush, lively flowers. Take petunias, for example. Many of them are looking leggy right now. But since they bloom prolifically and even tolerate some pretty cool temperatures, it’s wise to keep them going. They will last far longer into the cooler fall months than most annuals. So, just snip your petunias back to about 8 inches, being careful to make cuts just above a leaf, leaving no stubs, so the
www.youarecurrent.com
plant will have a place from which to regenerate. Plants that are deadheaded regularly will flower longer because when you prevent a plant from forming seed you redirect the plant’s energy back into making more flowers, instead of exhausting itself to produce seed. Many plants will give you a second flush of blooms when sheared, like a haircut. For example, when sheared, Coreopsis “Moonbeam’ will produce a new flush of blooms before Jack Frost wipes them out. Left un-sheared you get nothin’. Garden plants that don flowers on a single stem should have the whole stem cut back to the base of the plant when finished flowering… like daylilies or hostas. After trimming, I sometimes give them a shot of fertilizer for a boost, and then I just forget about it. Within a few weeks, the plants look just as they did in May. Seriously! Holly Funk is an Indiana accredited horticulturist and advanced master gardener residing in Noblesville. Email your gardening woes (or wisdom) to hollyfunk75@yahoo.com.

Interior design trends mimic the runway COMMENTARY By Jaclyn Dunn There are two kinds of people, those who rush to buy the latest “must have” item and those who could care less. I confess affiliation with the first group. It’s not that I feel everything has to be thrown out and started anew each season; it’s just that I like to keep things interesting by making a few small changes every year. As Webster defines, a trend is a “general direction or course.” Translated, that means nothing is written in stone here; it’s all for fun. So twice a month, I’ll be keeping you current on what is new and fresh and how it might affect your world. What is it that most influences design trends here in the USA? Most of you will not be surprised to learn that fashion design is the strongest influence. What you see on the fashion runway will soon be translated into color palettes and fabrics for home décor. If the color palette and mood is on the runway now, in some cases it will be in the design studio in six to 12 months, sometimes almost simultaneously. A prime example would be Polo Ralph Lauren, where it all starts with fashion. Ralph and his senior design teams begin to develop new product by a process similar to making a movie. They envision the storyline or lifestyle, create the characters and imagine what they would

How would they create a “movie set” background in which the “actors” would live? Ralph Lauren’s philosophy is to link his timeless quality of the past and evolve it to the present, always based on the classic style that is the trademark. ren for more than a year now, and the home collection for summer named La Plage is fresh and light both in color and texture. Cotton and linen stripes in cream, beige and variable shades of blue cover French framed upholstery pieces. Woven rattan is featured on an oversized bed’s headboard and footboard with a white washed wood frame. Blue and beige floral on fabrics are soft and faded (in one case 100 percent jute, making it soil and oil repellant) or bold and batiked. All of this created to “capture the tranquil elegance of the seaside with an artful mix of chic and rustic …” Applause in the theater, this “movie” is a hit. If you cannot head to the French Riviera this summer, drape cotton striped fabric artfully over the patio table, use rattan charges under white dinner plates. Place a classic blue and white vase in the middle and fill with white hydrangea. Place Mediterranean blue wine goblets and soft faded floral napkins under bone handled utensils. Invite friends. You haven’t broken the bank, but you are right in style. In fact, your friends might even think of you as “trendy”!

My phone is an iPhone COMMENTARY By Dick Wolfsie My wife and I were on the couch experimenting with different positions. Mary Ellen prefers vertical, but horizontal is more comfortable for me. That’s one of the many choices iPhone users have. We felt like kids again with our new 3G devices, although we didn’t know why we needed so many Gs. After all, James Cagney once whacked a guy for two Gs, so three Gs sounded like overkill. Lately, I’m feeling hipper than ever. I increased my presence on Facebook and snapped up an iPod. I even bought a Kindle, which allows you to download books you want to read. The problem is that it also downloads books you don’t want to read. The “Buy” button is very sensitive. If you smile approvingly or nod your head while browsing the thousands of choices, you’ve bought a book. That’s how I got stuck with “The Great Pantyhose Craft Book, Mensa for Dummies” and “Sex after Death.” I now have about 400 friends on Facebook, more than I ever aspired to. I copied all the names into my phone so when someone posts something earth-shattering, like, “Two squirrels in my yard today. Dog went crazy. See photo,” I can give them a quick call and chat about it. To facilitate this, I use my new phone application called VLINGO, which is a voice activation system. You say a person’s name into your smart phone and the next thing you know, the two of you are chatting away. I decided to call my Facebook buddy, Roger Atkins. ROGER ATKINS, I said, with perfect enunciation and monotone pitch. After a few seconds, I heard, “Hello, this is Roger.” “Hi, this is Dick.”

“Who? “Dick Wolfsie. We friended each other on Facebook.” “My friends don’t usually bother me at 6 a.m. Why are you calling?” “I’m calling everybody. I want to tell you about my new app. When I say ’Roger Atkins,’ my phone recognizes your name and calls you.” “And now I recognize your voice. So if you ever call me this early again, I’m going to disconnect your head from your neck, if you don’t mind some land-line lingo. Later in the day, I called my wife at the university where she works. CALL BUTLER, I said into the phone. “Hello, this is Butler. How can I help you?” ”Yes, Mary Ellen Wolfsie, please.” “Who? Does she work in the showroom? “Huh?” “This is Butler Toyota, Sir. Do you want sales or service?” I tried four more times to reach my wife, but I kept getting the dealership. I was offered a free oil change if I promised to quit pestering them. I guess re-calls annoy the folks at Toyota. I am trying to learn everything there is to know about my phone, but mastering this device is overwhelming. I made a promise to myself that I would study one new thing each day until I knew it all. For example, I discovered that if you hold your finger on one of the app icons, it will wobble and vibrate on the screen. Why? I don’t have a clue. I’ll figure that out tomorrow.
Kids really do say the darndest things
COMMENTARY By Mike Redmond I get lots and lots of e-mail forwards. So do we all, I know, but mine usually come with a note about how the sender thought maybe I could use the enclosed in a column sometime. Usually I just send back a thank you and an explanation that I don’t like to use something I can’t verify, which counts for 99 percent of the stuff flying around the Weird Wide Web. And I especially don’t like to use stuff I can’t credit. I’ve had my own work stolen and printed under someone else’s byline, and you may take it from me that it stinks. This week, though, I’m bending the rules a little. The following arrived just a few days after the death of Art Linkletter, TV host and author. As a kid, I loved to watch “House Party” when I was sick and home from school, especially the portion of the show where Art would interview a bunch of 4- and 5-year-olds who, often as not, aired some of the family’s linen in their answers. This led to a book, “Kids Say The Darndest Things,” a title that grossly understates the situation. Anyway, in honor of Art, I pass along the following, a collection of kids’ observations about love: “‘Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired.” – Terri, 4. “Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss.” – Emily, 8. “Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.” – Bobby, 7.
“If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate.” – Nikka, 6. “Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it every day.” – Noelle, 7. “Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well.” – Tommy, 6. “‘During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn’t scared anymore.” – Cindy, 8. “My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don’t see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.” – Clare, 6. “Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.” – Elaine, 5. “Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford.” – Chris, 7. “Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day.” – Mary Ann, 4. “I know my older sister loves me, because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones.” – Lauren, 4. “When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.” – Karen, 7. “You really shouldn’t say ‘I love you’ unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.” – Jessica, 8. Ol’ Art was right. Kids DO say the darndest things. And the wisest. COMMENTARY By Bob Walters “And on his head are many crowns …” - Revelation 19:12 Just before Satan “gets it” in chapter 20 of Revelation, the Bible’s final book, the resurrected and heavenly Jesus Christ is dramatically described in Revelation 19 as an avenging conqueror called “Faithful and True” that nobody in their right mind would “mess with.” Of Christ is written … The “roar of a great multitude” shouted “Hallelujah!” Twice. “With justice he judges and makes war.” “His eyes are like blazing fire.” His robe is “dipped in blood.” “Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations.” He will rule with “an iron scepter.” “He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.” His name is “the Word of God.” His name is also “King of Kings and Lord of Lords.” And in the middle of all this we learn that “on his head are many crowns.” This … is our loving, gentle and humble savior? The Lamb of God? You bet. He is also the righteous warrior who defeats sin, releases the world from death, and seals our eternal salvation by throwing the “beast,” the “false prophet,” and Satan into the
lake of burning sulfur to be “tormented day and night” for all eternity. I want to be on the Conqueror’s side. I want to glorify Him. I want His righteousness and power to battle Satan when I sin, and I desperately want His forgiveness to intercede with God the Father on my behalf when final, eternal, “lake of burning sulfur” judgment is handed down on my soul. Not that there’s, uh, anything to worry about. Serious business, this salvation. Yes it is. And that “sword” coming out of the Conquering Christ’s mouth? We can be sure that sword is “Truth.” In this life we are pretty much on a death march if Christ is absent from the picture. That’s not to impugn any other religion; it’s just that eternal salvation by faith is an utterly unique aspect of the truth of Christ. No other theology teaches that. The many crowns of Christ aren’t the vanquished; they are the believers who humbly and faithfully follow Him, and accept His gift of salvation. And if you are working hard to get your own Christian crown … you’re missing the point; the crowns go on the head of the Conqueror. Bob Walters (www.believerbob. blogspot.com, email rlwcom@ aol.com) loves the hymn, “Crown Him with Many Crowns.” It’s great advice.

When you choose to lose weight with us, a board-certified Bariatrician will customize a plan specific to your needs and lifestyle and coach you toward your goals. With clinical excellence in a supportive environment, you can have complete confidence that you’ve made the right choice with Clarian Bariatrics. Attend a Wednesday seminar about medically supervised weight loss options for more information.
