Scouts have summer of fun

Westfield, Boy Scout Troop 107, chartered by Christ United Methodist Church in downtown Westfield, recently completed record setting summer camping experiences. On June 19, 11 Scouts and four adults headed west to conquer Boy Scouts of America’s first High Adventure Base, Philmont Scout Ranch. Located in the New Mexico Rocky Mountains, Philmont has 137,000 square acres of mountains, trails and camps. The group backpacked 69 miles over 10 days, including a one day, 14-mile trek to the top of Mount Baldy. Then in mid-July, 40 scouts and 12 adults braved the heat and dry weather to venture to Ransburg Scout Reservation in Bloomington for a week of learning and improving their Scouting skills. Scouts
participated in more than 40 different merit badges including Engineering, Robotics, Rowing, Water Sports, Swimming, Life Saving, Fishing, Archery, Rifle and Shotgun to name a few. Twenty two scouts completed requirements in the 92-year-old Firecrafter Program. Dating back to 1920 and founded by F.O. Belzer at what is now known as For more information on scouting in Westfield, join Troop 107 at the Westfield Farmer’s Market on Aug. 17 starting at 4:30 pm. Members of Troop 107 along with Cub Scout Packs within Westfield will be available to answer questions about the Scouting program. Troop 107 will be setting up a campsite for visitors to inspect and will have support from the local Indiana National Guard and their portably Climbing Wall for all to enjoy.
Belzer Scout Reservation in Indianapolis, Firecrafter is based upon three ideals – friendship, leadership and service. Boy Scouts complete requirements for the ranks of Camper, Woodsman and Firecrafter during their week at summer camp. Requirements include map reading, knots, lashings, service and of course fire building. The third and most rigorous rank, Firecrafter, includes building a fire by friction set that is used to start a fire from the spark created by the scout. Firecrafter candidates also plan and execute a full campfire program including a safe fire, camp songs, stories and skits. This year, Troop 107 had two Firecrafter candidates – Reilly Hester and Devin McCleary. Hester and McCleary will complete their candidacy at a weekend campout in August know as Grand Ritual, where scouts are tested on their skills and perform service to their camp.
Wendling joins performing arts board – William E. Wendling Jr. has been selected to serve as a member of the Board of Directors for The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Wendling, a partner with the Carmel and Noblesville law firm of Campbell Kyle Proffitt, joins Chairman Rollin M. Dick and Vice Chairman Frank M. Basile to work with Tania Castroverde Moskalenko, the Center’s newly appointed CEO, to continue to bring an extraordinary listening experience to central Indiana. The Center for the Performing Arts includes the 1,600-seat Palladium concert hall, the Tarkington 500-seat proscenium theater and the 200-seat Studio Theater. Wendling was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1983 following graduation from Indiana University School of Law. His practice is focused in civil litigation, personal injury, real estate transactions, land use law and divorce.

School board elections – Hamilton County Elections Administrator Kathy Richardson said filing for school board candidates began on July 25 and those interested in running have until noon Aug. 24 to file. Candidates need to fill out a Can-34 petition and get 10 signatures of registered voters from the district they are running in. Richardson said for the first time all school board elections will be Richardson held in the General Election on Nov. 6. Available positions for Westfield Washington Schools include District 1 and 3.

Gas-main break spurs evacuation editorial@youarecurrent.com A gas leak at the Brookside subdivision spurred an evacuation of nearby homes on July 28. Westfield firefighters were called to 3910 Chancellors Court when a contractor accidentally struck a two-inch gas main on a home under construction. WFD Spokesman John Barrett said firefighters immediately shut down access to the roadway and evacuated a few
homes for safety. They continued to monitor the leak – protecting nearby homes with hoses and monitoring air quality. Vectren Gas arrived shortly after, but needed additional crews to fix the leak. Within two hours the problem was corrected and firefighters then deemed the area safe, allowing people back to their homes and reopening the roadway. Vectren Gas remained at the home for a few hours to complete repairs.

Maple Glen nurse wins $5,000 gift card in photo contest

editorial@youarecurrent.com Maple Glen Elementary School Nurse Jeannie Langenkamp is the winner of a $5,000 gift card in the School Health Corporation photo contest for the best depiction of a “Day in the Life” of a school nurse. The contest judges wrote, the “picture was well done and didn’t even look staged!” For almost 20 years, School Health Corporation has created their Day In the Life of a school nurse catalog covers with artist Mike Hagel and were excited to see art come to life as school nurses either recreated one of the existing covers or created a cover of their own. Langenkamp’s design was an original and might be considered for a future catalog cover. “I am thrilled to win the contest and to be able to share with the students and staff at Maple Glen,” said Langenkamp, who has been a nurse for 31 years, 21 as a school nurse. She will use the windfall to stock the clinic with needed supplies. Jeannie shared in her contest entry, “I have been a school nurse for 21 years and it has been the most rewarding and satisfying nursing position I have ever held. My days are filled and fly by. No one day is the same and the children always surprise me with entertaining comments. Family and friends say I should write a book of all the funny statements the kids have made over the years. Working with children just makes me

District rolls out new preschool program By Robert Herrington • robert@youarecurrent.com With the start of the 2012-13 school year, Westfield Washington Schools is opening a new pre-school program called All Aboard and All Aboard Readiness. The programs are designed to emphasize an enriched kindergarten readiness curriculum. “It’s pre-K instruction for children we know are going to kindergarten the next year,” Keever Executive Director of Student Support Programs Cindy Keever said. All of these children will be immersed in the skills necessary to succeed in kindergarten and gain familiarity with an elementary school environment. Keever explained that the program is run by professionals and not teachers. She said elementary principals created a three-page kindergarten readiness checklist the All Aboard and All Aboard Readiness will use as a guide. “The goal is to build the program and have one at each elementary school or adding a third section,” she said. “Then it becomes so naturally
aligned.” Full time and partial week programs are offered to meet both a family’s child care needs and a family’s desire for their child to enter kindergarten the following year well-prepared for school. The full time programs are located within both Maple Glen and Monon Trail elementary schools. Keever said the district is also offering a three day program which will run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at Monon Trail Elementary. “With Full Day Kindergarten, some parents don’t want their children gone all day (in preschool),” she said adding the partial week program prevents students from “going from nothing to everything.” All Aboard and All Aboard Readiness programs are open to prekindergarten aged children of WWS families. Allisonville Road ramps entering I-465 closed for 15 days – The Allisonville Road entrance ramp to eastbound I-465 will be closed until approximately Aug. 16. Both exit ramps from I-465 to Allisonville Road (Exit 35) will remain open to right turns. Westbound I-465 will be able to exit to northbound Allisonville Road, and eastbound I-465 will be able to exit to southbound Allisonville Road. Traffic is still prohibited from crossing the bridge, which was closed approximately 110 days for reconstruction on May 30. Asa Bales sculpture a reflection on past, present and future By Robert Herrington • robert@youarecurrent.com Passaggio, the new $20,000 sculpture at the Asa Bales Park entrance on Union Street, functions as an entry passageway for residents and visitors, as well as a space to explore and experience the park itself. The work of art also signifies a transition for the city and its artist – Katey Bonar. The name Passaggio references a passageway or turning point in a journey, which brings together the emphasis of the past, present, and future that is explored in this piece. “It’s wonderful for Westfield. It’s transitioning into a future community with art awareness,” she said. “It’s a transition for me into the public sphere. . . It’s been a journey for me to finish the project and my undergrad at the same time.” Bonar, who recently graduated from Herron School of Art and Design, began the sculpture last summer. “My senior year was about this project. It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever made and my first outside piece,” she said. “I’m so thankful for the opportunity. It’s helped me get real world experience in public art which is hard to start out with as an undergraduate.” Melody Jones, Westfield Parks and Recreation Dept. director, announced a few years ago that the Grand Junction Task Group was looking into starting an Art Commission for downtown Westfield. During this process they looked at different ways to display public art. “Herron Art School has a program in place that connects art students with the community to come up with a project to benefit both parties,” she said. “The class came to Westfield for a visit and we went to Herron for a presentation of sculpture ideas the students came up with. Katey’s sculpture was selected.” City officials said Westfield paid for the sculpture. “I think bringing art into the parks is a wonderful idea and it provides a new dimension to the quality of life one can experience in our community,” Jones said. “One of our goals has been to make art a fixture of our community and I believe displaying public art, like our new sculpture and the mural downtown, adds to the community spirit,” added Mayor Andy Cook. “I am thrilled that the Grand Junction chose this piece, not only because of the meaning and interpretation behind it, but because it was created by a local artist, which I believe is vital when displaying public art.” When Herron's Basile Center for Art, Design and Public Life students visited Westfield, Bonar said the city’s history was a focal point for artists. create something that bridged their rich past to the future they are creating,” she said. "Presenting proposals for commission is always really exciting for me. I definitely enjoy putting forth a concept and being able to explain my thought process and inspiration as it relates to a space or idea that the client is very involved in.” Passaggio opens the way into Asa Bales and allows for reflection on what has grown and what can develop in the future. Bonar said all of the visual cues in Passaggio relate to natural visual patterns that reflect time passing: the many concentric ring patterns as growth rings in trees, and the columns' ridges and grooves as eroded landmasses or different stratified geologic forms. The pavilion rings overhead are a way to examine the potential, to look up to the sky as an intangible place and as a possibility for the mapping of what is yet to come. “It’s the future. You can’t reach or touch them,” explained Bonar. “It’s something connected to the path, the journey.” In the two thermoplastic ring groupings on the trail, viewers have the opportunity to trace their history as in a record, and the things that have happened that can be tangibly mapped out through time in a visual representation that can be experienced physically through circumambulation. “An art piece such as this in Westfield gives an opportunity for residents to reflect on the past, as well as to examine where they are now, and where they want to be in the future – both collectively and personally,” said Bonar. “Passaggio can serve the city as a new place of cultural growth and reflection, as a means of cultivating conversation, and as a record of the rich history and developing future of Westfield.”

Opinion Public art? Go for it … carefully
A car is not a babysitter It is our position that children should never be left unattended in an automobile and the community must remain vigilant. The recent rash of incidents involving children being left alone in sweltering vehicles begs the question, “What was the parent thinking?” Ideally, parenting should be a selfless commitment. The reality is that parenting can be very inconvenient at times. Many parents shudder at the thought of chasing toddlers around the grocery store or dread the crying caused by waking a child out of a sound sleep to remove them from the car. Yet, we do it without a lot of hand-wringing because it’s part of being a responsible parent. An automobile should never be used as a babysitter. A locked car is not a safe-haven for children. Leaving a child in automobile is like putting them in an oven-like death trap. It does not even have to be hot outside for the temperature to rapidly escalate inside of a parked car. Is a peaceful shopping experience really worth risking the well-being of your child? The same holds true for pets. If you can’t take them with you, don’t leave them in the car - especially in this summer of record heat.

It is amazing, really, how static we become as we age. Most of the folks from my generation still refer to “taping” something from television, even though the use of videotape has long been replaced by some digital recording device. Yet, why would we bother to learn the new vernacular? It is almost hard to imagine the number of words that are likely doomed to fade in the coming years. Will we still have car keys in two decades? Will pennies still jingle in our pockets? Will television even exist in any identifiable way, let alone the words used to describe trying to capture it for later review? But it is more than our unwillingness to accommodate modern, more accurate phraseology. So often, we fail to take steps to remain current in our thoughts and actions as we grow older. We cling to outdated and expensive cell phone contracts rather than considering a renegotiation. We refuse to bid our insurance or try a new restaurant for no reason,
other than “knowing” that an old plan is good enough. In a world where change is constant, can we survive without constant change? It is a struggle to stay current. Changing our computers, or cell phones, banks, doctors or service providers for business – they all take effort. They all take thought. And they all take time. So, how do we make it work? Like everything, isn’t it true that slow-and-steady wins the race? Every day, I try to read one article, meet with an expert, or learn about a new-and-better approach to something that I already do. If I’m lucky I can implement once a month, but the knowledge motivates and reduces resistance for whenever the time allows. Regardless, isn’t an open mind to opportunity better than closed?
Public art. We love it. If it’s affordable and inviting, we love it even more. In the end, it becomes part of the city’s enrichment efforts, which aim to benefit the residents and attract businesses to Westfield. Is it compulsory? Not in the least, but an affordable “extra” can’t hurt every now and then. You might know by now that Westfield spent $20,000 for a sculpture at Asa Bales Park. The city commissioned the project through the Herron School of Design and selected the work of an Indiana-native student. You might be aware that your neighbor to the south, Carmel, has seen its share of controversy regarding the volume of pieces of public art on display. Some question any expense for such items, especially with taxpayer money. We have and we still do. The question we ask – one that has not been answered – is, “When is it enough?” In Westfield’s case, however, we find the price tag to be inoffensive, and we believe that in its own way the sculpture, which we’re looking forward to seeing, will add to the quality of life in this city. It could be viewed as an investment, as we all know a good deal of fine art tends to appreciate. It will be interesting to see where this leads the public-art initiative in this city. Forty Million Shades of Shame
Idiots, bullying and immunization Editor, I try to never get worked up by editorials and responses, but as a pediatrician I am continually frustrated by the banter and information regarding vaccination. I feel like in interest of full disclosure, Dr. Carol Rossetti should have noted in her response to Danielle’s vaccine article that her degree is that of a doctor of naturopathy and parent/grandparent. Danielle Wilson is a mother and humor columnist. This shapes their view of this subject and the way they address it. Rigorous studies show that vaccines are safe and effective. I defend that and recommend them, and I wish that all my patients took my advice. They can be expensive, but they are NOT a big money maker for most offices. In fact, our under/uninsured and Medicaid patient population receive $8 vaccines with no administration charges (the same as at the health department.) Therefore, I take exception to the inference that physicians have a financial reason to vaccinate children with what Carol Rossetti, D.N. (not M.D.) implies are “toxins” in her response. Ugh. In fact, she may have a financial horse in the race by bringing people to complementary and alternative medical treatments – notice she solicited business by adding her e-mail. It is capitalism, after all. Also. . . in regards to bullying. Families make decisions, right or wrong, for themselves. No one is getting bullied by an editorial for goodness sake! But, if you think Danielle is bullying people by trying to get them to vaccinate, you must also need to consider the same from Carol in regards to considering not vaccinating, especially in light of her MULTIPLE anti-vaccine articles in the Current. The schools do make provisions for children who cannot vaccinate due to allergy, medical exemption, or TRUE religious objection, but not just because someone doesn’t want to. Editor, With her column “Fifty Shades of Gray,” acclaiming the erotica novel of the same name, Danielle Wilson shredded the Current’s decency while demonstrating an astonishing ignorance of the societal damage pornography inflicts. Fact: In a CNN interview with Gail Dines, professor and author of “Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexuality,” Dines cited an incredible host of ills associated with pornography. Dines went on to say, “… that the more men view pornography, the more difficult it is to have intimate relationships.” Fact: A meta-analysis of 46 published studies by the National Foundation for Family Research and Education cited regular exposure to pornography as causing increased risk of sexually deviant behaviors.
Fact: Member respondents to a survey by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers stated “an obsessive interest in Internet pornography” as a “significant factor in 56 percent of divorce cases.” As long as Wilson is privileged to share her opinions in a public forum, the public should be privileged to receive facts supporting those beliefs. There is nothing “harmless” or “hilarious” about a billion dollar industry insidiously destroying 40 million of our friends, neighbors, children, wives and husbands. Nor does it demonstrate journalistic integrity for the Current to let any columnist so brazenly state otherwise without providing any real facts to the contrary. Michelle Foley, 46074 F. C. still working on a cake, and wouldn’t the massage parlor/gazebo make the perfect spot? Feeling slightly better once I realized I could remove the “1-Hour Massages Given Here” sign, and trusting that it would all work out in the end, I successfully kept the panic at bay until t-minus three hours. Maybe I should shower. Why didn’t I bring my defrizz cream? This bra is showing! What the frick am I doing! My daughters calmed me down and found an old deodorant stick for the “something borrowed” bit. When I came downstairs, self-conscious about my hair and dress and tan lines and wondering why on earth I’d thought renewing my vows would be so awesome, Doo looked at me and said, “You look beautiful; maybe we could just take pictures and skip the ceremony?” He was nervous, too! But do it we did. And it was lovely. And affirming. And surprisingly emotional. I honestly think the words meant more to me this time then they did sixteen years ago. In the presence of our kids, Doo’s parents, the governor (AKA, the lastminute officiant), the coordinator, and a tiki bar singer who performed “Rhinestone Cowboy,” we said “I do” again. Happy fortieth to us! Peace out.
My husband and I recently renewed our wedding vows, and as weird as the whole experience turned out to be, I’m so glad we did. Here’s the skinny. To celebrate our fortieth birthdays, Doo wanted to vacation on the beach where we first met… with our four children and his parents. Yeah. Not exactly my idea of a romantic getaway. As any mom can testify, you can’t truly relax if you’re “on duty” the whole time. So, I tried to steer him towards a Belize rainforest package for two, but six airline tickets later, we were committed to “Family Va-cay 2012.” Disappointed, I quickly launched my Plan B: “We’re renewing our vows, babe, since you scheduled this trip over our anniversary. Make peace with it.” He reluctantly agreed. I tracked down a local gal on the internet to help me with the details, and then bought three linen shirts for the boys and two matching sundresses for the girls. That was the extent of my planning. I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing several and did NOT want to do an Italian review next. However, after eating at Pizzology, it definitely deserves a spotlight. I just can’t get enough of the Pizzology Chop Salad. This crisp, romaine lettuce salad with fire-oven roasted tomatoes, prosciutto, shallots and gorgonzola has the most delicious, fresh citronette dressing ever. The dressing is made with a smooth olive oil and the juice of a lemon that has been put in the 500 degree fire oven for just a few minutes to bring out the natural sugars. I have had the joy of dining at Pizzology four times this month and have sampled a few different appetizers and entrees. The fresh breadsticks are accompanied with two rich and flavorful sauces, the white being my favorite. When not in the mood for pizza, my entree was Italian Mussels which are perfectly steamed in white wine, salumi, olive oil and garlic. The signature pizzas are baked in a fire oven, leaving a wonderfully charred crust. My favorite is the Sausage Pizza with homemade sausage complimented by freshly shaved fennel, onion and peppadew peppers. The Old Kentucky Rome, a white sauce pizza with roasted figs, arugula, Kentucky-cured prosciutto and taleggio cheese, while different, is delicious. The pasta

Chorizo Poached in Red Wine Ingredients: 2 pieces (4 ounces each) dry Spanish chorizo, 6 cups dry red wine, 10 cloves peeled garlic, 4 bay leaves, 1/4 teaspoons cayenne pepper Directions: Combine all ingredients in a large skillet. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer over moderately low heat, turning once, until chorizo is plump. Uncov-
er and let stand for 5 minutes. Transfer the chorizo to a work surface. Slice on the diagonal 1/4 inch thick. Return chorizo slices to the skillet. Simmer over low heat for 5 minutes. Michael Meneghini Hip and knee replacement surgery has traditionally been associated with older adults – those beyond age 65. Today, however, people in their 40s and 50s are considering joint replacement surgery to relieve pain in order to stay active, continue their favorite activities, and maintain their quality of life. To serve this emerging younger population, extensive ongoing research designs cuttingedge orthopedic implants that are durable, have improved bearing services, and that will minimize risks and side effects. On the surgical side, techniques such as navigation technology, which monitors the position and alignment of the implant in relation to the patient’s anatomy, achieve improved mobility and range of motion for patients. Today, some 90 percent of knee replacements are expected to last 20 years or more. And, although hip and knee replacements are arguably two of the most successful surgeries in medicine, they are still invasive procedures accompanied by risks. Andrew Luck, as the new kid in town, has the daunting task of filling the shoes of a legendary quarterback and simultaneously recreating the Indianapolis Colts as a winning franchise. Heralded as a champion before even taking the field, Luck is guaranteed a certain degree of success and failure. With Luck, journalists not only have a fresh story, but they will have hundreds of clichés, puns and adages using the words “luck” and “lucky” at their disposal. From this point on, every story associated with the Colts will have an element of “luck” to it. Of course, very little of Luck’s success will depend on actual “luck.” Almost his entire life, Luck has been relentlessly training and preparing to take the stage in ways that fans do not and cannot fathom. His success will occur, if at all, because of years of physical and mental preparation, one step and one day at a time. When he takes the field, Luck will succeed only as well as he has prepared. Successful companies follow a similar pattern as Andrew Luck. Business success is built and maintained through years of planning and

One of the most anticipated “surprises” in traveling is at the end of the siq, the narrow sandstone split that leads to Petra. After walking more than a mile between walls so high that only a sliver of sky can be seen, the tall façade of the “Treasury of the Pharaoh” suddenly appears, hewn from the cliff face and glowing pink in the sun. Pockmarks in the stone urn above the classic portico reflect the unsuccessful efforts of local Bedouins to get the gold they say the Pharaoh stored there after chasing the Israelites all the way from Egypt. Other legends say the rock Moses struck to get water is along the siq and the grave of Aaron is somewhere nearby. Although Moses and Aaron may have been close, there was never any money in the Treasury and the Pharaoh of the Exodus missed Petra by almost a thousand years. Petra was founded about 400 B.C. by the Nebateans at the center of the caravan routes then crisscrossing the Middle East. The “Treasury”
was actually the tomb for a Nebatean king. A second impressive façade called the “Monastery,” reached by climbing steps through steep mountains, was another tomb. Petra has so many elaborately carved tombs that some people have speculated it was a city of the dead, reserved for burials and religious ceremonies. However, Petra probably was home to 30,000 people, protected from enemies by the siq and nurtured by a system that captured water from flash floods. Petra was recently named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World and is definitely worth the trip. But don’t expect to find the impressive rooms and statues behind the Treasury’s façade shown in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. A room without a view Commentary by Bob Walters
To create Day 1 of Creation, God said, “Let there be light.” And there was light. That’s Genesis 1, verse 2. But, it’s not until verse 14, on Day 4, that God creates the sun and the stars – the things that make light. So, what gives? How was there light before there was light? It’s an easy one, really. The “light” first created in Genesis is God’s light; the light of the world that divided the darkness. And that light is Jesus Christ, the son of the father. The sun and the stars are evidence of God’s glory; Jesus Christ is God’s glory. It’s not unusual for people with only a casual knowledge of the Bible to think that Jesus Christ was a new idea; God’s Plan B for New Testament salvation after the wrath, sin, mayhem, and failure of the Old Testament. No, Christ is an old, eternal hand. The Christian confession of Christ is best encapsulated, I think, in John 1:1-14. It lyrically tells us that Christ – also called the Logos, or Word of God – was not only there in the beginning; in fact, the Logos made everything. These are Christian basics. Secular skeptics and more than a few “Christian” preachers and congregations conveniently skip over this very important truth that Jesus is the Word of God, the light of the World (John 8:12), and the way, and the truth, and the life for all who seek
a relationship with God. I bring up “light” and the primacy of Christ because it’s a fairly common thing for outsiders and non-believers to accuse Christians of wearing “religious blinders” when answering questions about their faith. Those who either don’t understand or are hostile to the idea of God, Christ, salvation, truth, scripture, right, wrong, evil, etc., often can’t understand an honest answer because they don’t understand their own question. “Blinders” suggests a lack of light for Christians, which I think is the opposite of the truth. For example, “Who gets into heaven? Does Ghandi? Does a murderer?” The answer is not binary, and I’m not wearing blinders to say: 1. I trust God with all that; 2. It’s truly not for me to say; 3. Christianity isn’t centered on heaven – it’s centered on the glory of Jesus Christ; and 4. If you don’t believe in heaven to start with – or Jesus or the Bible – why would you care who goes there? Christianity is illuminated by the entire light of the entire world. Those who try to find truth without that light have a room without much of a view. Bob Walters (rlwcom@aol.com) cites G.K. Homemade butter in a jar Commentary by Ashley Phipps
As this crazy hot summer continues to keep us indoors more often than I’d like, I have been trying to find some simple, inexpensive and fun activities for my children and I to do together. We always love creating with food, so we decided to break out of our normal sweet food routine and go for something a little more savory. We decided to make our own Homemade Butter. Don’t worry. You won’t need a churn. Just a few simple things you probably already have in your home! You will need: • heavy cream (as much as you want, the more cream, the more butter you will make!) • pinch of salt (optional) • marble • jar or other tight sealing container First, you will take your heavy cream and pour it into a jar with a pinch of salt. (I used a plastic freezer jam jar, but any tight sealing jar or container will work.) Add the marble. And then shake it vigorously. Keep shaking. And shake some more. Be sure to involve your children in this part! After about 15 minutes of shaking, the sides of your jar will start to become clean. And after another 5 minutes of shaking or so,
you should be done shaking! When you open the container, you will see that there is a solid part and a liquid part. The easiest way to finish the butter making process is to take the solid part out of the container and squeeze the excess liquid out with your (clean) hands. Then it should look like butter! If you put it in the fridge for a bit, it will harden up just a bit more and will be the texture, consistency and taste of butter! YUMMY! Who knew making butter was so easy?! Leonardo DaVinci said, “Details make perfection, and perfection is not a detail.” It is proven over and over that the little things can matter most – especially when it comes to decorating. When a space has a good structure, but lacks the panache needed to turn your head, it might just be lacking finishing touches. Sometimes small changes and tweaks can add energy and style to your room. • One of the easiest is to update with pillows. Consider shapes other than the 18x18 square. One of my favorites is the ballshaped pillow! • These same pillows can announce a new color palette. The drama of a monochromatic room that features a piece of art bursting with color can be softened with a couple of the hues in the pillow fabric. • Remove art prints under glass and replace with original art…even if you need to be the artist! Glass is reserved for photos, pen and ink, and watercolor. • Frame a handwritten note from a loved one. • Change an area rug or pull it up to expose hardwood or tile floors. • Put your lighting on a dimmer for a more ambient atmosphere. • Overlap and layer empty frames painted in bold accent colors. • Remove tired towel racks and replace with hooks. Drape thick, new towels over the hooks for a textural difference. • Replace fussy accessories with ones that are clean-lined in bold, solid colors. • Lean your artwork rather than hanging it for a way to easily move it later. • Consider cowhides as rugs for a dramatic statement. • Add some chevron pattern to your decorating for a trendy look.
• Peek under the skirt of a dated sofa to see what it would look like if reupholstered without the skirt. • Update your bathroom faucet and lighting for a big impact! • Stack your books or display with the page edge visible. • Clear the clutter from tables and surfaces. I promise you won’t miss that coupon for 25 cents off mayonnaise, and that your losing scratch-off lottery ticket won’t suddenly turn into a winner. If your décor is modern, force yourself to buy one traditional item for your room. It will warm it up. Conversely, if you are traditional, a modern piece will add life to your space. Commentary by Holly Lindzy Who doesn’t relish in that little rainbow from the spray of the garden hose? It’s one of the simple joys of gardening. . . ’till the man says I gotta put the hose up due to drought. Dang it. Then my watering chores are all about priority. Firstly, my potted annuals get water since they’re the first to dry out in this weather. Save water and time by use a slow drip “aquaglobe� or similar device. Second, if I had some, would be veggies. Consistent moisture will be important for tomato growers while the peppers can stand a little heat – again, priorities. Trees and shrubs, especially as they are establishing that first and second season need at least an inch of water a week. To achieve this simply lay the hose on a slow stream at the base of the plant and walk away for 20 to 30 minutes. You’d be surprised how much water a plant doesn’t get by showering it with a water wand or sprinkler. And an evergreen need not be hit by repetitive sprinkling, anyway. Please. Perennials should be mulched up to two inches to keep moisture consistent. A little wilting here and there won’t hurt established perennials. And the money to replace them is not what it would be for our trees and shrubs. Slow drip irrigators such as the Treegator are

great for establishing trees and shrubs and they make a low profile model to fit under evergreens or around shrubs. Simply fill with water and walk away. Check your local garden center, Salsbery Brothers in Carmel keeps them in stock. Until the man lifts the ban, I have to do my part to keep things in check and still enjoy gardening. The only thing left to do is grow cacti, I suppose. And somehow that just doesn’t seem like much fun.

Eliminating tub for enlarged door-less shower Commentary by Larry Greene ORIGINAL MASTER BATH: This home is located in the Kings Mill subdivision on the west side of Carmel. The home was built in 1994 and the current owners have lived in the home for 13 years. REMOVING A TUB: The homeowner wanted to update the master in line with their lifestyle. “We wanted a bathroom that was compatible with our lifestyle. Easier to maintain - the less maintenance, the happier I am. I love stone/granite and wanted to have that in the bathroom.” The design focused on eliminating the large garden tub and making room for a larger shower. According to the owner, “We’ve had a Jacuzzi tub in every house we have owned and have never used them. We don’t miss the tub at all. We are on the go all the time and it takes too long to fill up. Also, the jets get moldy because we rarely use them. On top of that, everything in the bathroom was dated, ugly, and impractical. And, we could never get it to look clean.” SHOWER DETAILS: The walk-in and door less shower is the owner’s favorite part. “The shower is terrific - we wanted a great shower. The towel warmer and the heated floors are great, and my wife really likes having a ceiling fan. The heated floors are on a timer so they can be ready for me in the morning.” CABINET DETAILS: The homeowner decided to salvage part of the vanity area. “We kept the cabinets as they were only 6 years old, and had them painted. We also kept our mirrors, light fixtures, and toilet.” FINISH DETAILS: The homeowner loved the final results. “We
