Cub Scout Pack 105 assembles 105 care packages – Newly formed Cub Scout Pack 105 shipped 105 care packages as holiday gifts to Indiana National Guard soldiers currently deployed in Afghanistan. The care packages assembled by the more than 100 Cub Scouts that make up Pack 105 at Union Elementary School in Zionsville contain snacks, magazines, books and personal care items. Each Scout also included a handwritten note of gratitude for the soldier’s service. On the night the Scouts assembled the care packages, long-time Zionsville resident and World War II veteran, Floyd Schultz, shared stories about his experiences on D-Day and at the Battle of the Buldge. Schultz thanked the Scouts for their service to others and told them how very special it is for soldiers overseas to receive care packages from home. “Schultzy is a true American hero and a living legacy of the Greatest Generation,” Pack 105 Cubmaster Tom Sugar said. “Our mission in Pack 105 is to partner with our parents to help build better boys and good men who can become the next great generation for our country.”

I remember Reddi Wip Commentary by Ward Degler

Johnson Local resident, J Webb Johnson, publishes “The Nine” – J Webb Johnson, Zionsville, has recently published his first novel, “The Nine,” which he describes as a “coming of age fantasy.” Johnson was born and raised in Zionsville and has lived all around Indianapolis. He writes articles, reviews, and essays for a variety of websites. His new book is currently sold in digital format, on the Kindle and Nook stores, with the print edition due out in mid-January. I had 24 slices of pumpkin pie between Christmas and New Years, and used one entire 14-ounce can of Reddi Wip. Obviously, I love pumpkin pie, and I have a very special fondness for Reddi Wip. This love affair dates back to Thanksgiving day 1948. Just a few days earlier, a brand new, whiz-bang product hit the grocery shelves. It was called Reddi Wip, and everybody wanted it. We were among the lucky ones to get a can. Bear in mind, this was new technology. No one before had tried to put whipped cream into an aerosol can. My uncle was visiting from Indiana that year and was seated at the head of the table where he had the honor of carving the turkey, passing the green beans and dispensing the Reddi Wip onto slices of pumpkin pie. Since it was such a special occasion, he actually stood up and took a bow before flipping off the cap and pointing the nozzle toward the first slice of pie. Nothing happened. He tried again and still nothing happened. That was when, as he recalled it later, he departed from common sense and turned the nozzle toward his face so he could see what was wrong. This time when he pressed the nozzle, it broke off inside the can and a giant whipped cream volcano erupted into his face, up across the ceiling, down the wall on the other side of the room, and ultimately onto the floor where our unsuspecting dog was napping. I don’t remember what happened after that, but I know we found traces of whipped cream throughout the room for weeks afterward. A couple months later, Dad saw an item in the newspaper that said Reddi Wip had introduced a redesigned nozzle on its cans of whipped cream.

Walmart will be a good neighbor and economic boost Commentary by David Reitnauer We appreciate the opportunity to present the plan for the new Walmart at Bennett Parkway and Michigan Road. Walmart will be a good neighbor providing day-to-day shopping and keeping Zionsville and Boone County shopping dollars inside the community. Walmart has a strong reputation for being an integral part of the communities we serve. In 2012 alone, Walmart contributed more than $1 million to Hoosier charitable organizations, including our support for the Zionsville Lions Club 9/11 remembrance ceremonies. The new store will be 156,000 square feet and includes design features to complement the look and feel of the Village. It will have a product selection reflecting the choices of Zionsville-area customers. This store will be a major economic benefit to Zionsville and Boone County. The construction costs reflect a $30-million investment with 300 direct and indirect construction worker jobs who will spend money in and around Zionsville. Once open, in property taxes alone, the new store represents a $750,000 increase for Zionsville. The store will employ 300 associates

and will recapture approximately $20 million in sales that Zionsville and Boone County residents now spend at other central Indiana Walmart and Sam’s Clubs. Questions have been raised in Zionsville community meetings about the future of the 86th Street store. The 86th Street store serves a different market than the proposed Zionsville store, and it will not close. We have invested more than $4 million in renovations in the past two years at this store. It’s that time of year again. Time to start that diet and head to the gym. But, a new Zionsville business offers another option – yoga. Peace Through Yoga, located on the corner of 106th Street and Zionsville Road next to Nana’s Flowers, opened its second yoga studio in November. With its first location on Eagle Creek, this new studio in Zionsville offers 25 different classes, ranging from beginners to advanced, to help with those New Year’s resolutions. “People think yoga is Bassett about flexibility but it also includes strength building, endurance and balance along with learning to quiet the mind and find inner peace,” according to Sally Brown Bassett, owner of Peace through Yoga. Classes range from Vinyasa, Power Yoga, Beginners’, Slow Flow, Gentle, Kundalini, Meditation, Yoga for Stress Reduction, Kids, and Teen as well as special workshops. “Yoga continues to be one of the fastest growing activities in the United States and, after ten years, we are thrilled to be opening a second studio, especially in Zionsville,” Bassett said. “In

“These international yoga retreats are mixed with adventure and service work to destinations like Costa Rica and India,” Bassett said. “There’s nothing like yoga in the rainforest!” In Costa Rica, Peace Through Yoga started a library/English center. “We’re now up to 1,000 books and have hired an English teacher in a rural area where children have no income for uniforms or books so they are not able to go to school,” Bassett said. “We teach them English which changes their future and breaks the poverty cycle since it’s a country geared toward tourism.” Although she has traveled the world, her heart and home remain in Zionsville. “I totally love it here. The town to me is magical. I live minutes from the village, and I have been thinking of opening the studio for several years,” Bassett said. Peace through Yoga Eagle Creek celebrated its 10th Anniversary last week, and Bassett hopes her new studio on Main Street will have the same success and bring in more local residents. “Yoga in general is still a hidden secret to the residents of Zionsville, and I hope they will discover this practice that can be life-long,” Bassett said.

“I, as a mom, refuse to live in a society like this,” Watts said. “We can’t let profit drive the conversation about what we do about gun control. It has to be common sense.” She is also aware of past shootings, such as Columbine, where 15 people were killed and 23 wounded, despite having an armed guard on duty that day. “It would be tragic to see teachers with handguns and armed guards at schools,” Watts said. “We should try to decelerate, not accelerate, the use of handguns in schools. We are not a militarized zone. We need simple, common sense solutions, not more guns.”

One mom from Zionsville had to do something. Her tears, anger and disillusionment over the Sandy Hook tragedy turned to action with an appeal to moms nationwide to unite to stop the violence created by guns, specifically assault weapons. With one question on her mind, “What can I do?” Shannon Watts created a Facebook page and “One Million Moms for Gun Control” was born. With a goal to be modeled after Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), the mission of One Million Moms for Gun Control is to be an organization that helps strengthen and monitor gun control laws. “We can do something this time if we join together as a powerful lobby of our own, made up of moms. We cannot let another mass shooting go by without acting. Newtown is like any town. If it can happen in Newtown, it can happen in Zionsville,” Watts said.

Future Plans

From Facebook Page to National Spotlight

From this one Facebook page created on Dec. 14, the word spread quickly. Groups of women on both coasts contacted Watts to offer support. One woman, Kim Russell, a shooting victim from New York, became the local chapter leader and now is overseeing all chapters nationwide. The next wave of help came from the opposite coast, where a San Francisco group provided pro bono legal services and helped establish its not-for-profit, 5014c status, approved on Dec. 26. That designation identifies the group as not organized for profit but operated exclusively for the promotion of social welfare. Brian Masck of Media Cafe Online also joined the effort, volunteering to create and maintain the group’s website along with BlastRoots, a grassroots organization which creates petitions, letters, and Tweets to the White House, members of Congress, and the NRA. As of Dec. 3, there were more than 17,000 Facebook supporters and 75 local chapters established. She attributes the success to the passion and unique skills of moms. “Pulling together the skills of moms - being organized, building coalitions, protecting,” Watts said. “When you bring together these skills all over the country it becomes an unstoppable force.”

Obstacle - The Big Guns

Despite their passion, commitment and momentum, this “unstoppable force” has several obstacles ahead, one being the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA). “We needed 5014c (designation) to raise money to fight the NRA. We have to fight fire with fire. The NRA is a very powerful lobby. With 4 milllion members, they have a lot of money and a lot of influence,” Watts said. In response to the Sandy Hook tragedy, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre in a statement on Dec. 21 declared, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun ... I call on Congress today to act immediately, to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school.”

The NRA also offered its services and expertise to make it happen: “As America’s preeminent trainer of law enforcement and security personnel for the past 50 years, (NRA) is ready, willing and uniquely qualified to help.” Watts and many others, especially residents of Newtown, were outraged by the NRA’s response, especially since the NRA clearly supports the proliferation of guns and has a vested financial stake in it.

Just a few weeks into their efforts, an executive team, strategic plan, board of directors and other foundational components for the newly formed organization are being discussed. Watts and her team are already getting the attention of Washington and, on Jan. 3, a social media campaign was launched and Congress was urged to consider a new bill by Rep. Diana DeGette (DColo.) and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.). Watts also wants existing legislation revisited and updated, such as the Second Amendment, as it was developed in the late 1700s when muskets were used and military assault weapons of today were not on the radar. “This terrible tragedy and the NRA’s reaction to it woke a busy giant (Moms), 80 million moms,” Watts said. “We are not a one and done organization. We are going to be a grassroots organization that is constantly putting pressure on legislators at the federal and state level to create new and stronger gun control laws.” Although she never planned to be an activist, this stay-at-home mom has a simple goal and big plans for the future. “Our goal is to create a safer country where we know we can send our kids out of our arms and into our schools, shopping malls, and theatres and know they are ok,” Watts said. “I look forward to when we can change our name to 10 Million Moms for Gun Control.”

Colts Strong It is our position that the Indianapolis Colts earning an AFC playoff berth is the feel-good story of the year. What started out as a season full of controversial player and management changes seemed all but doomed when new head coach Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with Leukemia early in the season. Immediately, fans put aside any animosity and Payton Manning withdrawal to channel their positive energy toward the healing of Coach Pagano. This ground-swelling effort took the form of the “Chuck Strong” campaign. The Colts organization led the way supporting blood drives, fundraisers and education efforts on Leukemia – complete with shaved heads in an empathetic sign of solidarity. Offensive coordinator/interim coach Bruce Arians, a cancer survivor, boldly vowed to extend the season to allow the return of a healthy Coach Pagano. Thanks to the outstanding efforts of Coach Arians, an emotionally-charged team led by rookie quarterback Andrew Luck and a dedicated fan base, the promise was fulfilled. Not-to-be forgotten are the accomplishments of General Manager Ryan Grigson who seemingly hit all the right buttons at all the right times. Among the dark clouds cast on 2012 by economic woes and national tragedies, thanks to the Indianapolis Colts, the game of football has warmed our hearts.

Hey, Washington: It’s the spending, stupid!

As Washington continues its financial debates, we are befuddled by our sophisticated “adult” methods of problem-solving. We say one thing while doing another. We do one thing while saying another. Of course, these paradoxes are driven by all manner of constraint – time, money, skill and even direct self-deception. Why do we encourage folks in public prison to read the Bible and attend church but prohibit them from doing the same while attending public schools? Why do we forbid ourselves from actions that would atrophy and spark dependency with wild animals in public parks while we fail to do the same to protect millions of able-bodied Americans trapped in the death-spiral of a life on the public dole? As a college student decades ago, I visited Mexico and first encountered urban poverty. Yet, I was admonished by the chaperones to avoid giving money – even the smallest amount – to the scores of children begging on the streets. To be compassionate (and make myself

feel good) by tossing a few bucks into the basket would, I was told, create incentives, keeping the children out of the free Mexican education system and ensuring poverty for generations to come. If I indulged my instinct to ease the perceived suffering, then I was actually perpetrating a much greater harm. They instructed, give to institutions not to people! Were there cases where an individual child was in real need? Of course – human suffering is a part of being human. Yet, could I, in attempting to assuage the pain of one, actually lead to the pain of many? In all the season’s greetings and all the spending, it remains important that we measure our generosity by outcomes as much as by intentions. But, can a generous intention ever be bad with the unintended consequences made not pertinent?

We’re sure you’re as tired of reading this as we are of writing it: The GOP caves in, again. As everyone knows, the so-called “fiscal cliff” was “avoided” by a typical, kick-the-can-downthe-road approach by our legislative giants in Washington, D.C. Instead, we should kick those “leaders” out, starting with John Boehner (R-Ohio), speaker of the U.S House of Representatives, who continues to try to compete with President Barack Obama on who can lead the least. We say they’re both winners in that department. We’ve often said that the GOP should just shut down, as only late-night comedians would miss the party. However, we think a better approach for the nation is to shut down the Democratic party, leaving the GOP as is, which guarantees the existence of a liberal party. We then create a conservative party, which can help legislate common-sense solutions to our fiscal problems. Hey, Washington: It’s the spending, stupid. ••• We trust you had a wonderful holiday season and have returned to the normalcy of everyday work and life. At least we hope that’s the case. New Year’s resolutions – again Commentary by Danielle Wilson

I’ve made it another year, and per my usual M.O., I will now share with you, my adoring public, my New Year’s resolutions. I first did this in 2009, and while a bit frightening to share one’s goals with a few thousand strangers, I found I did a much better job of actually meeting some of those goals that year. 2012 was no different, and though I never got around to painting the family room and still didn’t spend as much time at night with my kids as I’d hoped, I was able to finally get that book published (still available for the incredibly low, low price of $14.95 at www.danielle-wilson.com!) I also found the patience to ignore the pig sty that occasionally poses as our house. So here’s the list for 2013 ... please feel free to mock, judge, and place bets at my expense. 1. Paint the family room. We have now been in our home for three winters, and yet our main floor living space is still a bright shade of sun-shiney yellow. (Maybe I don’t want to be happy this morning!) Do I fear commitment, or am I just plain lazy? Perhaps both, but this baby is going atop the list in 2013. 2. Swear less. I make this a resolution every single year and rarely see any progress. I admit to a potty mouth, but can’t seem to clean it up. So, damn it, I will try yet

again, for the sake of my children and Baby Jesus. 3. Make new friends. Doo is always encouraging me to be more social, though I truly am happy most nights sitting in a comfy chair with a good book. This year I’m going to squelch that anxiety that creeps up on me whenever I enter a new social environment and actually force myself to meet people! I don’t want to end up a lonely geriatric with cats, no matter how delicious the smut Nora Roberts turns out. 4. Appreciate my children for who they are, especially my oldest daughter. I frequently find myself critiquing everything from her hairstyle to her clothing choices, and generally for no reason other than I’m in a bad mood. She’s beautiful and interesting in her own way, and I love that she is confident enough to steer away from the mainstream. 5. Drink less soda. I’m hoping to obtain my caffeine fix through more natural channels like tea and Lindt truffles. Happy New Year to you, and good luck with your own resolutions! Peace out.

Frankenweenie • PG, 86 minutes Commentary by Chris Lloyd As a filmmaker, Tim Burton’s mostly been working on reanimation projects lately – taking old movies and making them rise from the dead as remakes crammed with computer-generated imagery. The results have been up and down, generally scoring at the box office but leaving lovers of his earlier work (I count myself) feeling disappointed. If “Frankenweenie” has a fresher feel than most of his recent movies, that’s because it’s a remake of his own short film. The original was live action, a black comedy about a boy who zombifies his pet pooch using Frankenstein-esque science. The spiffy new version is stop-motion animation, which suits the material well – a mix of heartfelt pathos and creepy-crawly horror movie elements.

Victor (voiced by Charlie Tahan) is crushed when his beloved dog Sparky is, er, crushed in a car accident. Indirectly inspired by his eccentric science teacher, Victor jolts the canine alive with electricity. But then the other kids in the neighborhood discover the trick, and soon the whole town is overrun with zombie pets. Despite the subject matter, “Frankenweenie” is sweet-natured and should be suitable for all but the smallest children. And adults will enjoy the references to classic horror creatures, especially the classic Universal Studios menagerie. Which filler will benefit my needs? Commentary by Barry Eppley Q: I am confused about all the different injectable fillers. What do you think of the benefit of the filler Sculptra versus something like Juvederm for facial aging? A: Injectable fillers do have a role for some patients in the treatment of facial aging. However, it is very important to differentiate the ways injectable fillers are used. That distinction makes a big difference in which type of injectable filler is most appropriate. I divide injectable facial rejuvenation into two categories; spot and global facial rejuvenation. Spot rejuvenation includes such areas as lip enhancement, softening nasolabial folds, or filling in orbital tear troughs. Given the low volumes of filler needed

and sensitivity of the tissues injected, any of the hyaluronic fillers (such as Juvederm) may be used. Global, or volumetric, facial rejuvenation is different because it adds soft tissue volume to fill out the face, re-inflate it, and create a ‘lift.’ Given the volumes needed, the hyaluronic fillers are a bit cost prohibitive. This is where Sculptra comes in because it is a better ‘volumizer’ based on the way it is administered, works and persists, even though it takes a series of injections to create the desired effect. Have you ever dealt with a routine challenge and thought to yourself, “Didn’t I deal with this exact problem last week?” Of course you have. In fact, after you have been in business for a few years, chances are good that you get into a fairly predictable routine each week. Consider the following scenario: A customer has just called and complained that there is a defect in your product or service. The staff member who answers the phone deals with the problem but never communicates the solution to anyone else. Next week, a different customer calls with the same defect and the phone call is taken by a different staff member. Guess what happens? That’s right, another member of your staff takes time dealing with a problem that had been solved a week earlier. Now, keep in mind that this sort of scenario takes place in every facet of your business - sales, marketing, operations, customer service, accounting, shipping, etc. In other words, you and your staff spend a significant amount of time and effort trying to reinvent the wheel each and

every week. This loss of productivity (in addition to a fairly high level of frustration) is taking a significant toll on the bottom line. So, how do you stop? Like most issues facing entrepreneurs, the answer is intellectually simple, yet most owners struggle to implement the solution. Here goes (drum roll please …) - Buy a 3-ring binder and write the word “Operations Binder” down the spine. Next, create a table of contents that mirrors your business. Typical headings include Marketing, Sales, Operations, Finance, Customer Service and HR. After you have decided on the main headings, you then carefully consider each of the tasks that needs to take place in each of these categories and then document the steps necessary to complete each task. It really is that simple. As with most things in life, intellectually speaking this is easy. All you need to do is choose to execute. Choose wisely. Little changes go a long way in a cosmetic kitchen remodel Commentary by Larry Greene Original Kitchen: This client came to us wanting to update the look of her small kitchen. Built in 1994 and located in the Saddlebrook South subdivision in Indianapolis, the home’s original floor plan still worked well for the homeowner. However, there was a need and available space for a bit more storage. “It was time to remodel the kitchen. It needed an update, and things were looking tired. I wanted a purely cosmetic change, but needed more storage too,” the homeowner said. “With a tiny kitchen, that extra storage was the one thing that was missing. I love kitchen gadgets, and I needed more room to store them.” Cosmetic Updates: “At first, I was looking to just change the countertops and the sink, but the project grew from there,” the homeowner said. The final design called for laminate countertops in a Milano Quartz color for the main surface, and Tan Soapstone for the raised bar. A new sink and appliances were installed, as well as xenon undercabinet lighting. New canned lights increased the ambient and task lighting of the kitchen. A new tile backsplash was installed with Sandlewood – Monterey Amalfi tile in a staggered
