By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Community High School senior Hydra Ressler was inititally frustrated when she heard the Zionsville ACHIEVEMENT Indoor Percussion was being promoted from Scholastic A Class to Scholastic Open Class just two days before the state finals began. “We were all looking forward to having a gold medal around our necks and a state champion title in our hands,” said Ressler, who performs in the cymbal line. “We pushed ourselves harder than ever after the promotion, however, and it paid off. The students, staff and parents alike were astonished and inspired when it was announced that first place went to Zionsville. The ZIP ensemble made history that day, and we used our passion to continue on to be a national finalist.” The ZIP team captured the Scholastic Open Class title March 27 at the Indiana Percussion Association state finals at Ben Davis High School. “There ended up being no placements awarded for the (Winter Guard International) world championship virtual event this year, but Zionsville Indoor Percussion as well as our Winter Guard were both recognized as being world championship finalists,” said Tom Landrum, ZCHS director of bands. ZIP had previously participated in the Scholastic A Class, winning state titles in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019. The 2020 season did not finish because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “When we submitted our video for a WGI virtual regional event, the WGI judges determined that ZIP needed to be promoted to

the Scholastic Open Class, which is much more challenging and involves more difficult musical and visual skills,” Landrum said. “In following their rules, this change in the WGI circuit also resulted in the corresponding promotion to Open Class in the IPA circuit. With the addition of Zionsville, there were a total of eight percussion groups in the Scholastic Open Class. No one had any idea of how Zionsville would finish. “At the end of the day, ZIP became the first group in the 25-year history of IPA to win the state championship after being promoted to a higher class in the same season. This was an amazing accomplishment, and I have to say that I am still proudly in shock.” Alex Fulkerson, who plays quad drums, said winning state felt different for many reasons. “Getting the group to the next class up was a dream come true in itself,” Fulkerson said. “Coming out at the top of that class was the icing on the cake and was a really special thing for the group and the seniors this year.” For the full story, visit youarecurrent. com/?p=202535.

CFBC developing app to promote volunteering The Community Foundation of Boone County plans to develop an app that will more easily connect volunSERVICE teers and nonprofits, with the aim of promoting volunteer opportunities in the county. In late 2020, CFBC officials adjusted their 2021 granting cycles to ensure the foundation’s goals supported the present needs of the community, and the CFBC received a $150,000 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to develop what will be the Connect Boone County app and fund other initiatives. CFBC CEO and President Jodi Gietl said a common need the foundation continues to hear from nonprofits and residents is the desire for a centralized way for residents to volunteer. “A lot of the residents that we have are unaware of our nonprofit services, and a lot of the nonprofits are unaware of who they could link arms with to have a greater impact with,” Gietl said. “This is something I come across every day. And, also, a lot of our nonprofits need more volunteers.”

Gietl said foundation members believe many residents would like to volunteer more often but do not know where to find opportunities. The app aims to fill the need by collecting and displaying volunteer opportunities at Boone County nonprofits, allowing residents to search for opportu-

nities by time and date. The app also will serve as a community-wide calendar, listing events and happenings and helping those seeking to connect with others to make the connections. Users also will be able to make donations through the app to support local funds and causes. The CFBC is hiring a volunteer coordinator to work with local nonprofits and an app developer to create the app. It is expected to launch by late 2021 to meet requirements outlined in the Lilly Grant, Gietl said. She added that the app is expected to inspire what has already been record-setting support from the community. “Despite the challenges of 2020 with COVID-19, Boone County residents rose up to support local community needs, setting a record year of over $2.3 million in donations to funds held at the Community Foundation of Boone County,” Community Foundation of Boone County Board Chair Josh Frost stated. “This is a true reflection of the great people of Boone County. It shows that we can and do make a tremendous impact when we collectively work together and reflects the spirit of placemaking throughout the entire county.”

Williams believed to be Boone County’s first Black elected official By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Aaron Williams, 35, of Zionsville, was elected by an April 15 caucus to the Boone County Council, making him who what is believed to be the county’s first Black elected official in its nearly 200-year history. “Some individuals have shared with me that I’m the only Black/African American (elected official) in Boone County, and that I may be the first,” Williams said. “It’s humbling within itself. It means a lot. It’s not what I campaigned on or something that I will ever campaign on. But I would say it’s an extreme honor. It’s humbling, but it goes to show that minorities are just as capable, qualified and competent. And if there ever was a ceiling, the ceiling is broken.” Multiple Boone County officials confirmed Williams is likely the first Black elected official in the county, although official records aren’t kept on such matters, they said. On March 17, Steve Jacob, the council’s then president, died unexpectedly at age 73 because of health complications. A caucus was held to fill the vacant seat. Williams was unanimously chosen as Jacob’s successor, defeating Andy Hsu and Sally Owens. Williams’ term will finish when Jacob’s was set to end, on Dec. 31, 2022. “I was asked by some individuals to consider it,” Williams said. “I did that. I prayed about it first, then spoke to my wife to see how she felt about it. We took it from there, filed paperwork.” But before filing the paperwork, Williams said there was one person he wanted to speak with — Steve Jacob’s son, Jeff Jacob. “I just wanted to see where he was at,
because I knew his father and him were obviously close,” Williams said. “He and his family have a reputation of being servants and helping out in the community, and I wanted to just get Jeff’s perspective on if he was intending to run or not. And I said all along that if Jeff wanted to run, I would not run, and I would, instead, support him 100 percent.” Jeff told Williams he had no intentions to run and gave Williams his blessing, something Williams said deeply affected him. “I just let him know, ‘Hey, I’ll never be able to replace your father, but I can start immediately building on the foundation and legacy that he built,’” Williams said. Williams’ bid for the vacant seat was his second time venturing into politics. As a 25-year-old Republican candidate and resident of Marion County, he vied for a vacant city-county council seat in a 2010 special election. He was not chosen, but he said the experience did not deter him. “I’ve been very involved with the Republican Party for more than 20 years, working on numerous campaigns, being a precinct committeeman, award chairman,” Williams said. “I didn’t win, but I’ve always had a heart for public service and wanting to give back, and I believe in God’s divine timing. I think it was his favor that allowed this opportunity to come to fruition.” As a Boone County council member, Williams plans to be an advocate for public safety, fiscal responsibility and the rights of Boone County residents. He believes law enforcement agencies in the county need to be properly funded to create a safe community. “We need to make sure, from a resource
standpoint and a support standpoint, they get that from the county council,” said Williams, a client executive at Google. “If you have a strong public safety foundation and a strong core within your community, it naturally drives economic development opportunities because companies and individuals want to move here. Companies want to bring their headquarters here. They want to open up offices here. “When you drive that economic development, you inevitably have a strong tax base, and that tax base allows you to improve your infrastructure and improve school funding.” Boone County Council President Elise Nieshalla said Williams brings “an insightful perspective with his expertise in technology and experience both in the private and public sectors.” Williams wants his time on the council to serve as inspiration for other minority residents. “I hope it encourages someone who may have considered it and thought the opportunity would never come to fruition, or they would never be able to do it because of their race or ethnicity,” Williams said. “I hope it encourages more young people of color to step up and know you can serve your community. There is an opportunity, and people will support you.”
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION Besides his new role as a Boone County Council member, Aaron Williams will hold another title after he helped found the Boone County Racial Diversity Coalition, a nonprofit, on March 26. The coalition’s mission is to improve diversity, belonging and inclusion in the county, and Williams will serve as the chairman of the coalition’s board, which will include high-ranking representatives from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, Zionsville Police Dept., Lebanon Police Dept. and the Whitestown Municipal Police Dept.
“It came about from multiple folks in the community who live and work within Boone County, following what happened with George Floyd and, even really, prior to that,” Williams said. “We wanted to know, how can we help make sure Boone County is a welcoming community?” Williams said the coalition, by opening a dialogue between law enforcement, minorities and other residents, can create a “more welcoming community.”

Old-school vacations
Skipping school
Commentary by Terry Anker
Commentary by Danielle Wilson
It is time to get away from it all. The specter of COVID-19 is waning, and the echo of a very tough year is beginning, for many at least, to fade off into the canyon of history. The sun is shining, and the trees again showcase their foliage. Still, the nagging challenges of our daily ritual cast a shadow over us. We need a vacation. Where will we go? For many of those among us, no kids mean footloose choices. For others, we pack the little ones into the truckster and head to all points of the compass. For those whose nest has emptied, perhaps this is the year for the dream trip — long awaited and much imagined. Or maybe, our plans will take us to visit friends and family, always missed but especially longed for during the lockdowns and travel restrictions. Could we go to the lake again, or is it the summer to visit our college roommate who long ago repaired to some small town out west to pursue her fortune? Whatever the destination, we pack up, pull out and decamp. With each mile, our recollection of the domestic stresses of difficult customers and the slowly leaking toilet in the guest bath blur into the distance. We set out for new territory, with new faces and a new attitude. The rules of ordinary life seem more relaxed at some distance from home. Alas, the phone rings, email dings, and text brings us right back to the office. While we are blessed to enjoy the long tether of the modern age, it is just that, a tether, giving us a prolonged leash but never fully setting us free. And we like it, mostly. In a world where we can increasingly be anywhere at any time, will there be need for an oldschool vacation?
That second COVID-19 vaccine is no joke! I recently received mine, and despite my “I’ll be fine” and “Everyone else is weak” proclamations, it was never a real contest. Moderna 1, me 0. I felt so terrible I actually took a sick day! I know! For you non-educators out there, this is tantamount to publicly admitting defeat to your worst enemy in your underwear. You just don’t do it, ever. It’s too much work preparing for a substitute who probably won’t be able to carry out your instructions, anyway, assuming you’re even feeling well enough to pull those worthless plans together. To give you some perspective, I haven’t called in sick in probably seven years, though I’ve certainly been ill enough to warrant it. It’s simply easier to push through. But I knew about 12 hours after “the shot” that my near-perfect attendance was about to be flushed down the toilet. First, the intense chills and body aches hit, followed by a decent fever and a general sense of awfulness. For a brief moment, I thought maybe I could Zoom from home, but then quickly conceded defeat. If I couldn’t summon the strength to watch Netflix or whisper a thank-you to my husband when he thoughtfully brought me ginger ale, how was I supposed to explain the complexities of Reaganomics? No, I would not be doing any form of teaching in my condition. So, I informed the pedagogical powers-that-be, curled up on the couch, and … endured, reminding my pitiful self that this flu-like misery was still far better than contracting COVID-19. Get vaccinated, friends. Even if that second body blow necessitates a sick day. Peace out.

Clinched fist letter misses mark Not only is this historically inaccurate — it is dangerous and offensive. The hate his statement attempts to interject into the conversation is not only unacceptable, it questions the very motive of Holden’s letter to the editor. Finally, there is the false equivalency to the swastika, a symbol of the Holocaust, the genocide of more than 6 million people. That is offensive, not the clenched fist on the traffic box. Client/Filename:
Editor, (Jim) Holden’s comments (April 6) regarding the clenched fist are simply revisionist history. Facts do not support his narrative. Let us address the truly disturbing message in his letter to the editor (which is) Holden’s statement that a clenched fist is essentially the leftist equivalent to the Nazi or Hitler salute (which is the outstretched arm referenced). Mr. Holden suggests that it represents the same evil, anti-Semitism and racism as the Hitler salute did and does.

BCHD to offer vaccination clinics for high school students By Jarred Meeks jarred@youarecurrent.com The Boone County Health Dept. will offer two COVID-19 vaccination clinics for eligible high school students as part of a statewide effort to inoculate more PANDEMIC young residents. The clinics, which will administer the Pfizer vaccine, will be held May 22 and June 12 at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds. One was previously held May 1
at Lebanon Senior High School. Lisa Younts, the BCHD’s director of nursing and vital records, said the locations are near Lebanon’s Witham Health Services, the county’s primary hospital, which is storing Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine doses that will be used at the clinics. The clinics will be open to all Boone County students 16 and older. It is recommended that first and second doses of the two-dose vaccine be administered at least 21 days apart. The clinics are scheduled in three-week increments to
allow students to easily schedule dates for second-dose appointments. Younts said the Indiana State Dept. of Health has encouraged local health departments to offer special vaccination clinics to eligible students before the school year ends. “The Indiana (State) Dept. of Health has reached out to all the local health departments to see if we could get as many of the 16- and 17-year-olds vaccinated as possible,” Younts said. “They want to get them while
they are still in school, kind of setting up these (clinics) so that they have one place to go. We can get them all done before school is done.” Information about the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in an intake form is being distributed to all eligible Boone County students, Younts said. Guardians are encouraged to fill out the intake form before the clinics. Guardians must provide a birth certificate at the clinics before a student can be vaccinated, Younts said.

Cervical cancer survivor stresses importance of routine health screenings Patient describes relationship formed with Ascension St. Vincent care teams as a ‘blessing’ After a visit to the emergency room due to uncontrollable bleeding, Elaine Krieg scheduled a Pap test with her OB-GYN. When the test detected abnormal cells, her doctor did a cervical biopsy. She said she remembers crying and pulling over to the side of the road when her doctor called with her results. “I got the call on a Friday night and my doctor told me that I had cervical cancer,” said Elaine. “I was shocked.” Elaine received chemotherapy and radiation, and has been in remission for two years. She said she has “been blessed” by the relationships she has formed with her care teams at Ascension St. Vincent. “I feel like I have been surrounded by the best medical team possible,” said Elaine. “My doctors and nurses are amazing, and they listen to all of my questions and concerns.” Elaine admits she went several years without having a Pap test, but now she encourages all women to stay up to date on the screenings their doctor recommends.
Michael Callahan, MD, is Elaine’s gynecologic oncologist at Ascension St. Vincent. He said all women are at risk for cervical cancer, but it’s seen most often in women over age 30.
“A Pap smear could save your life. It may feel awkward at times, but it’s better to feel awkward for 10 minutes than go through what I went through.” Elaine Krieg, cervical cancer survivor treated at Ascension St. Vincent
“The human papillomavirus (HPV) is very common and various strains of the virus can cause cervical cancer,” said Dr. Callahan. “Getting screened regularly is important, because it may help find cancer early, when it’s most treatable.”
At Ascension St. Vincent, doctors are ready to listen to understand you and your needs as a woman. Gynecologists are available to help determine the screenings that are right for you. Current recommendations for screenings by age include: • 20s - Women should begin getting regular Pap exams. • 30s and 40s - Women should begin getting HPV tests in addition to regular Pap exams. • 50 and older - Women should continue getting regular screenings as recommended by their doctor. With locations throughout Indiana, Ascension St. Vincent makes getting routine screenings as convenient as possible. And if more advanced care is needed, you are connected to a team of specialists ready to help. We are maintaining strict precautions to keep you safe in our care.

The Zionsville Farmers’ Market will return to the town’s Main Street this summer, following last year’s relocaSHOPPING tion to the Zionsville Town Hall parking lot, a move that is expected to please local business and restaurant owners. “(The relocation) last year was a combination of COVID and the spacing requirements that were associated with the pandemic,” said Danielle Pezet, the market’s president. “We needed a little more space for shoppers. And there was some construction happening right next to where our market normally is.” The first market is scheduled for 8 to 11:30 a.m. May 22. It will operate every Saturday until Sept. 25. Social distancing and face masks will be required. Pezet said plans for last year’s farmers market were changed two weeks before it was scheduled to begin. Organizers secured a new location for the market at the Town Hall parking lot. “We got a lot of feedback from the community, vendors and merchants about how much it was missed in The Village, so we knew our plan was to bring it back,” Pezet said. Starting May 22, the farmers market will line Zionsville’s historic brick street from the parking lot north of The Friendly and will spill out onto Main Street. Previously, the market was held entirely in a parking lot directly south of The Friendly. This year will mark the first time a section of Main Street will be blocked off for the market. Pezet said organizers plan to expand the market next year. Additionally, Pezet said organizers extended operating hours from the traditional 11 a.m. end time to 11:30 a.m. with the goal of encouraging visitors to stay in Zionsville to shop or eat lunch, a shift that some Main Street business owners applaud. Tania Roudebush, owner of Black Dog Books, said the market draws a lot of visitors on Saturdays. “Often, (shoppers) stay for shopping and lunch, and now that they’re returning, the market is deliberately trying to connect with shops in The Village,” Roudebush said.

Carmel actors get another shot at ‘A Few Good Men’ By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com A few hours before opening night of Civic Theatre’s production of “A Few Good Men” on March 13, 2020, DRAMA the curtain dropped on the play because of a shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, more than a year later, the play returns with Carmel resident Matt Kraft in a leading role of Lt. Daniel Kaffee, a Navy lawyer. “A Few Good Men” runs May 7-22 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. “I think one of the biggest challenges of this role is just memorizing the sheer amount of dialogue my character has, but that’s the best problem I could ever ask for,” said Kraft, a 2009 Carmel High School graduate. “(Playwright) Aaron Sorkin writes incredibly sharp dialogue, so it’s a ton of fun to get to use it in this play. I started going over the script and the lines again about three weeks before rehearsal. It’s actually cool coming back to this story a year later because I see pieces now that I missed the first time.” The play is about the trial of two Marines charged with complicity in the death of a fellow Marine. The play was made into a 1992 movie. “I am so glad to have the chance to finish what we started with this show,” Kraft said. “Everyone at the theater is so fun to hang out with at rehearsal every day, and I can’t wait for audiences to finally see this.” Kraft performed in “Pride and Prejudice” at Civic Theatre in February. Kraft is confident “A Few Good Men” can succeed because of all the challenges involved with juggling that show. “It’s like, ‘Hey, if we can do a Jane Austen adaptation with English accents, masks and basically no live audience, we can definitely do ‘A Few Good Men,’” Kraft said. Jonathan Scoble, a Carmel resident, returns in his role as Lt. Jonathan James Kendrick.

From left, Jonathan Scoble and Matt Kraft perform in “A Few Good Men.” (Submitted photo)
“We were given about a month to rehearse, and with a few new faces in the cast, there was some work to do,” Scoble said. “For me, personally, it took about a week to get my lines back. My character, however, never really went away. He rattled around my subconscious for over a year, hopeful that we would get another chance to perform, and here we are.” Scoble said there are some new considerations as a result of the pandemic. “Mostly in terms of spacing and distancing and such, but we are working through them, almost effortlessly, without diminishing the integrity of the story,” Scoble said. “I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge and commend Civic leadership and our director, John Goodson, for how they’ve handled these circumstances.” Scoble’s character is that of a military tough guy. “On the surface, he seems very one-dimensional,” Scoble said. “To some degree, his tough-guy persona is simply an ex-
tension of his commanding officer, Col. Jessup. I believe there is a bit more to him than just that — a bright, articulate, commanding leader with more than a handful of misappropriated, God-fearing tendencies. I have found him to be a relatively dynamic character to portray.” Scoble performed in the summer of 2020 in a lighthearted Shakespeare abridged show for Indy Bard Fest. “With the cancellation of all indoor events, the concept was to bring theater to the community in outdoor spaces, which at the time was deemed safe,” Scoble said. “We managed to book 15 shows all over the state of Indiana from August to October, and although a bit non-traditional, it was very well received and considered a huge success. We were even able to stream the show live online in October, which was then still a novel concept in the community theater space — a production I won’t soon forget.” For more, visit civictheatre.org.

The Stave
The Stave Burger has plenty of pimento cheese to enjoy. (Photo by Anna Skinner)
Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 5711 McCracken Pike, Frankfort, Ky. What to get: The Stave Burger Price: $14 Anna’s take: This is At the Table with Anna’s Bourbon Trail edition. I went on the Bourbon Trail a few weeks ago with my older brother, Matthew, and although there will be a full story in a future edition about which distilleries we tried, what we liked, what to be sure to do, how to arrive at each destination safely, etc., there’s simply too much information for just one story, so I thought I would summarize the food in one of the At the Table with Anna columns. The Stave takes the top spot, although we did eat at several places like Troll Pub Under the Bridge in Louisville and Bourbon on Main in Frankfort. The Stave is a tiny bourbon bar in
Frankfort, Ky., conveniently placed between two of the distilleries we visited (Woodford Reserve and Castle and Key). We sat on the wrap-around porch because it was a gorgeous day. We ordered bourbon cocktails that were made with orange juice and ginger beer, and we both got the Stave Burger ($14). Pimento cheese is apparently a big thing in Kentucky, and this one-third-pound burger was slathered in a house recipe of the stuff. It also had candied pork belly, and pickled onion served on a toasted potato bun. Tip for all backyard grillers: toast your buns. If you find yourself near Frankfort, Ky., stop at The Stave. I do encourage you to call ahead and reserve a spot because Kentucky is a bit behind Indiana on loosening COVID-19 restrictions, and it’s a very small restaurant.
Behind bars: The Cure Get it at Hotel Tango, Zionsville Ingredients: 1.5 oz. gin, .5 oz. cherry liqueur, .75 oz. lemon juice, .75 oz. aquafaba, .75 oz. rosemary-raspberry simple syrup, Rosemary sprig Directions: Dry shake the ingredients, then shake them with ice and double strain into a chilled wine glass. Garnish with a torched rosemary sprig.

THE BLUEPRINT • Richly stained custom walnut paneling takes center stage in this remodel. • Site-built columns are found throughout the room; they are trimmed with the same detail of the wall panel molding. • The square coffered ceiling was replaced with a more modern linear design. • The glass-front cabinets feature adjustable shelves and dimmable LED lighting. • There is ample storage behind closed doors in the lower cabinetry. Story Inn, Story, Ind. (Photo by Don Knebel)
A fascinating little Story Commentary by Don Knebel Many Hoosiers know about the charm of Nashville, Ind. Fewer know about Story, a unique town 13 miles away. TRAVEL In 1851, President Millard Fillmore granted a 173-acre tract of land in southern Brown County to George Story, an Ohio physician attracted to the area by its timber. Dr. Story and his family erected buildings on a cleared site, which became known first as “Storyville,” and then simply as “Story.” Within a few years, the unincorporated village was the largest in the area, including homes, a doctor’s office, a general store, a church, a school, a sawmill, a grist mill, a slaughterhouse and a post office. When the general store, which supplied huckster wagons servicing nearby farms, burned in 1915, the owner replaced it with a larger two-story structure. A second general store was added in the 1920s, the peak of the town’s prosperity. The Great Depression, during which Brown County lost half its population, hit Story hard. The creation of Lake Monroe in 1960, cutting off highway access to the town from Blooming-
ton, furthered its decline. Today, all 14 remaining buildings are operated as Story Inn, a bed and breakfast using the slogan “One inconvenient location since 1851.” The restaurant in the original general store still has Standard Oil crown pumps near the entrance and features stained glass windows, creaky floors, a potbelly stove, rusty farm antiques and the presidential land grant. It is famous for Indiana-inspired gourmet meals. When I ate there last month, the food and service were superb. The five course, prix fixe meal included an egg arpege amuse, featuring poached yolk, trout roe, pickled fennel and matsutake sabayon, and a magnificent caramelized onion soup. Story Inn is near the end of a winding scenic road that runs south from Nashville. The next time you visit Nashville, consider a trip to Story.
