Gift Guide 2016 youarecurrent.com
Local shop offers old-fashioned craft By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com
Looking back at our history From the staff: This year is unique. Our state has celebrated 200 years as an “official member” of the United States, and as no other state was admitted to the Union the same year with us, we’re the only one with a 200th birthday in 2016. In our lifetime, well for most of us at least, we’ll not see another celebration of our state and its history like this. After some thinking, it only made sense that we’d use this space, as we celebrate our family and those we care about, to commemorate this special year and each of our 199 years before it for our bicentennial with “An Old Fashioned Christmas.” In this guide, you’ll find highlighted a vast outlook through the end of the year of the happenings for the holidays in the communities we serve. While gathering this information, we’ve focused on one thing in particular – hyper-locality – from family events large and small, musical and
theater performances, a wide range gift ideas from each area in which you’ll find a Current publication, and so much more. This year is unique to our company, as well, as we celebrate our 10th anniversary, and each of those years we’ve had a gift guide. It’s quite the milestone for us, and each and every one of our readers, employees and advertisers have helped us grow from our first edition of Current in Carmel, back on Oct. 24, 2006, to years worth of editions in Carmel, Fishers, Geist, Noblesville, Westfield and Zionsville. If you’re reading this, thank you. We sincerely wish you and yours a wonderful season with family and friends. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

For a decade, Kiln Creations, a paint-andtake pottery shop, has sat on the historic downtown Noblesville square at 60 N. Ninth St, and this year, as in years past, it is again offering a holiday craft for families and couples. Depending on your age, think back to those ceramic, lit Christmas trees that have graced tabletops in homes for decades. Maybe your grandparents owned one, or maybe you still have yours. Historically, the trees were hand-painted by their owner, but as the pieces grew in popularity, they became mass-produced. “Most of them are handmade,” owner Shannon Loomis said. “Even some of the ones you see in local antique shops were probably made by somebody. Back in the day, they had traditional ceramic studios where the ladies would pour the molds and everything, so I think that’s where they originated.” In two different sizes, 12 inch and 18 inch, $55 and $85, respectively, the purchase of each tree comes with all of its electric parts, a multi-color light kit, and the larger trees come with a star for the top. Guests can paint the trees however they

like, but for a more traditional look, staff will be on hand to help. Studio fees, which include all paints and tools, glazing and firing, are $8 per adult and $6 per child. The shop also offers a similar piece in the shape of a wreath, smaller tree votive holders and a variety of ornaments, among other holiday pieces. For more, visit kilncreations.net, or call the shop at 317-774-8982. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday (closed Monday).
Electric bike shop opens
David Tortora is convinced electric bikes will grow in popularity. “We’re pretty sure we’re pretty unique in that we only sell electrics,” said David Tortora, who has lived in Carmel for more than 25 years. The store is named Accent Bicycles Presents The Electric Bike Center and is in Monon Square Shopping Center, 622 S. Range Line Rd., Suite S. The first day for walk-in traffic was Oct. 8. “We think we have a nice selection of bicycles, and there is usually a couple of us here who can talk about the bicycles,” Tortora said. The shop will only be open limited hours for walk-in traffic. “We can only handle three prospects at a time, but we are open (anytime we agree to a time),” said Tortora, who added he is flexible and will come in later in the evening. “We can get any
kind of electric bike. We have six different brands right now. If you are going to make a purchase like this, you want to make an educated purchase.” Tortora, 75, started selling bikes after he retired, at first doing it from his garage. He is an avid electric bike rider himself. “Electric bikes on the East and West Coast are very popular,” he said. The shop also rents electric bikes. Most ages can ride the bikes, but he recommends parents approve teenagers riding some of the faster ones. “Some of the bikes are very, very fast,” Tortora said. The pedal assist is the most popular form of using electric bikes, Tortora said. Most bicycles go at least 15 mph. To call for an appointment at 317-506-6902 (direct) or 317-689-0066 (message center).

Coxhall Holiday Home Tour helps CCHS celebrate 20 years By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com Carmel Clay Historical Society this year is celebrating two decades of holiday home and building tours. The Dec. 2 tours run from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and are $50. The Dec. 3 tours run each hour on the hour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and are
$30. The Dec. 4 tour begins at noon and is $20. The Friday evening tours include light hors d’oeuvres, a live auction and cash bar. Friday and Saturday tours include all three homes. Sunday tours are for the Scott Jones Estate only. Tours require a good deal of walking. All tours start at IU North Hospital in the north parking lot at 11700 N. Meridian Street in Carmel. Tour goers will park in the north lot to catch the shuttle buses. Friday evening tours are for adults 21 and older. Saturday and Sunday tours are for adults 18 and older. Tickets can be purchased at bit.ly/2fspcia.
About the stops on the tour The Kinzer Cabin, which sits on the south side of Main Street, just east of Keystone Parkway and built in 1827, is Clay Township’s oldest structure. John Kinzer built the unique two-story log cabin for his wife and children in dense woods on a hill above a flowing spring. Kinzer built the Georgian home next to the cabin in 1847, which is decorated for the tour by David Jackson.
The Scott Jones Estate sits on west 116th Street, was originally built in 1939 and then was extensively expanded in the late 1990s. In addition to this home’s classic architecture, it is uniquely decorated.
White Chapel Church was built in 1853 after the Mattsville area Methodists outgrew the first Blue School (a.k.a. the Farley Schoolhouse). Construction was completed at the property on East 116th Street, just west of Hazel Dell Road, through donated labor and materials. The only cost to the church was $14. White Chapel is Clay Township’s only pioneer church still standing.

Chorus to perform at hospitals
By Renee Larr • editorial@youarecurrent.com
The Fishers Community Chorus will spread holiday cheer with performances at Community Hospital North and Community Heart Hospital. Founded in 2015, FCC has increased its membership dramatically over the course of the past year. “We were able to increase our membership considerably. We went from 18 to about 27 in the course of a week or two,” said Marc Feeney, vice president of Fishers Music Works. “Last year we ended our season with a major choral work, which was never on a radar in the beginning, but we happened across a director who was just incredible. With the new director, we started attracting new talent at a higher level. We decided to branch out and bring some of what we’re doing to the community at large a little bit more than what we had in our first season.” Instead of doing a typical Christmas concert, the choir decided to take its talents to the public. “Immediately, we thought about nursing homes and hospitals. I was able to talk to Karen Hicks, who is the volunteer services director at CHN,” Feeney said. “She was ecstatic about the idea. We threw out the dates

to the choir. We weren’t sure how it was going to go because these are all people who are volunteering and have daytime jobs. We got an outstanding response. We’re going to be taking about 15 members on two dates to not only the main campus but also the Heart Hospital. We’ll be doing a 45-minute to an hour set of Christmas carols in the lobby of each hospital.” The FCC will perform from 10 to 11 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to noon Dec. 5 and 7 at CHN and then from 11 a.m. to noon at the CHH in the lobby. “We’re obviously looking to bring holiday cheer to the folks who have the unfortunate distinction of being in the hospital that close to the holidays,” Feeney said.
