Riding for the memory

Spokes of Hope participant and organizer Cindy Hart rejoices after a ride through Indianapolis. (Submitted photo courtesy of Ken Hart)
For Cindi Hart, the Spokes of Hope organization hits close to home. As a wife, mother, athlete and breast cancer survivor, Hart knows what it’s like to fight for her life. “Survivor is a difficult title to grasp. Personally, I would rather adopt the title of cancer “Warrior”, “Victor” or “Master,” Hart wrote in a blog post earlier this year. And yet, survivor she is. Hart is also the director of the Spokes of Hope Bike Race, happening during the Fall Festival weekend on Sept. 7. This Sunday morning event will begin at 8 a.m., and is what Hart calls a “really awesome environment to honor those who have passed, and those who have survived.” There will be a 31-mile race, a 62-mile race, and a 100-mile race. “Spokes of Hope is a 100-percent not for profit, volunteer organization,” Hart said. When bike riders finish their miles, they will ride down Main Street in Zionsville, where a bell will ring for every person being honored in memory. “When they finish and you hear the bell, it is just an amazing, quiet moment,” Hart said. Tim Reinhart, the 2014 Fall Festival Chairman, said that he hopes the community shows up to ride in the Spokes of Hope race, or even just come and welcome the riders back into town. “Please show up,” Reinhart said to the Lions Club during a recent club dinner. “Support those among us.” To register for the race, visit www.spokesofhope.org. There will be free tee shirts for the first 100 people who sign up.

Alpha Leos hosted a bake sale in April to raise money for measles prevention. (Submitted photo)
Alpha Leos step up to the plate By Sophie Pappas • sophie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Alpha Leo Club, a group of pre-teen and teenage Lions Club kids, started as a way for adult Lions Club members’ kids and grandkids to get involved with community events. But according to Lions Club member Leigh Ann Akard, the Alpha Leos have become so much more. “We actually started getting kids that don’t have family members in the club,” she said. “We decided to open the club to really be a community club for kids from ages 12 to 18.” Leigh Ann’s son, Anthony, has been a president of the club and now another son, Spencer, is the new president, following the year after Drew Hobick. During Hobick’s time as president, the group raised more than $250 for the Lion’s International Measles Initiative. The Leos conducted a bake sale during the Eggnormous Easter Egg Hunt to raise the money. “We wanted to donate to the Measles Initiative so that we can help children not only in our community, but in other countries as well. We can immunize one child from measles with just
one dollar raised,” Hobick said. Members and their families baked cookies before the event. “I’m really impressed with how much these guys have done,” Leigh Ann said. “But they work together really well. And it’s not just boys, there are girls in the group too.” Leigh Ann said that there are club members from homeschooling groups, private schools and Zionsville Community Schools. “We don’t have regular, boring meetings,” Spencer said. The Alpha Leos are helping the Lions Club during Fall Festival, and will be the hosts of LeoPalooza, a drug and alcohol free party for kids on Saturday night. “It’s for the young adults,” Leigh Ann said. The Alpha Leos will also be helping during the VIP Carnival night, which is a special evening on Friday just for kids with special needs and their families. “The Leos will be designated riders,” Leigh Ann said. “This means that because some special needs people can’t go on rides by themselves or maybe their parents are too elderly to ride with them, the Leos can ride and be their buddy.”

As many of our readers know, I am the mother of a “fabulously bright and beautiful” 2-year-old. However, 2 has its challenges (duh!), so I already know going into the week of Fall Festival that I will have to pick and choose our activities carefully. Here’s what I’ll be doing with my girl Sept. 6 through Sept. 8:
Friday: VIP Carnival Night
7
6 p.m. • While this is an exclusive event for families with special needs children, I will be attending VIP Night as a photographer, and of course I’ll be bringing my girl with me! I think it’s important for her to be comfortable around all kinds of kids, and I also think it’s a great opportunity for those with special needs to not feel excluded from interacting with other types of children.
Saturday: Let the games begin…
10 a.m. • We will make our way over to the grandparents’ house, near the starting point of the Fall Festival Parade. Starting at 10:15 a.m., the Zionsville Community High School marching bands will be making their way through the village, as well as many floats and local businesses.
Noon By noon, we will be grabbing lunch at Greeks Pizzeria, and then making our way toward the park for elephant ears and cotton candy.
1 p.m. Naptime in the stroller, so my husband and I can take turns riding rides.
2 p.m. Kids Corner time! Made for toddlers to teenagers, this area of the park is filled with inflatable castles and slides. Individual tickets are $2, and an unlimited daily wrist band is $10.

At trAders Point CreAmery Saturday OctOber 11, 12:00-7:00
German BierGarten . Whole hoG roast
PolkaBoy Band
hayrides . Games & crafts . Pony rides . artisan market 4 p.m. By now I’ll be making my way over to the Silent Auction. Held at the Shelter House, this place will be filled with goodies from around the community. Online bidding is under way at www.qtego.net/auc/zlc
5 p.m. This is a great time for the babysitter to show up, so my husband and I can sneak into the Big Top Tent for a drink (or two!), and enjoy some live music.
SUNday: Cars and bikes 8 a.m. We will be hitting the bricks bright and early to support the Spokes of Hope bicycle riders. 31-, 62- or 100-mile races that supports cancer survivors is a great way to help finish a fun-filled family weekend!
Noon • Last but not least is the 12th Annual American Dream Car Show. This car show is in the park, and will feature local vehicles. Owners of great cars can register their vehicle at 11 a.m., and the awards (trophies will be handed out!) will be at 2:30 p.m. Registration cost is $20.

Supports the Zionsville Fall Festival!
Q&A with Fall Fest Chairman Tim Reinhart What is Fall Festival? The Zionsville Lions Club Fall Festival is a long time tradition of a weekend of family fun, food, entertainment and frolic that is always the weekend after Labor Day. This year’s theme is Z’Circus. The festivities begin Friday, September 5th and continue the next two days, with many fun activities for people of all ages. Fall Festival is the Zionsville Lions Club’s largest fundraiser every year. The monies raised go toward the overall improvement and maintenance of Lions Park Reinhart What is new at Fall Fest this year? We have moved the Pet Pavilion to north of the gazebo this year and
increased the number of pet vendors. There will be several new entertainment acts in the area. We have also moved Miss Fall Festival Outstanding Teen competition to the Zionsville Town Hall to host this growing event. The VIP Carnival is expanding to include more vendors and groups that work closely with special needs families and always has big smiles for all. What is the cost and where can people park? Fall Festival has free admission for people of all ages all weekend long. We do have a large parking area in Lions Park. Parking is $5 per vehicle. Where can people get up-to-date information about Fall Festival and other Lions Club events? Visit www.zlionsevents.com or like the Zionsville Lions page on Facebook.

Meet the Lions Club leader By Sophie Pappas • sophie@youarecurrent.com After more than 35 years in the executive retail world, and manning companies such as Hills Dept. Store, Toys R Us, and T.J. Maxx, Mike Heffner and his wife, Deanna, have settled in Zionsville. “We’ve lived all over the country,â€? Heffner said during one afternoon at the Lions Clubhouse. The clubhouse sits on Elm Street and overlooks Lions Park, a 22-acre public park owned and maintained by the Lions Club members of Zionsville. This is the club that Mike Heffner is now president of. “I’ve lived in 15 different places all over the country,â€? Heffner said. “But I knew I wanted to retire in Zionsville. And I knew this time I wanted to be a Lion.â€? One of Heffner’s favorite days of the year is the VIP night of Fall Festival. “When I first heard about VIP night I thought it was for town leaders, from town council,â€? he said. “But it wasn’t about that at all.â€? VIP night is for the families of children with learning and physical disabilities. The festival and all of its rides and games are open and available free of charge for the families. “We partner with the Best Buddies club at the high school,â€? Heffner said. “And the looks on these kids’ faces is unbelievable. It’s a wonderful night and my favorite Lions event.â€?
Mike Heffner, president of the Zionsvillle Lions Club, stands inside the Lions Clubhouse on Elm Street. Heffner moved to Zionsville after working in the retail business for more than 35 years. He is this year’s new Lions Club president.

By Sophie Pappas • sophie@youarecurrent.com On Friday, Sept. 5, the Lions Club is hosting the annual VIP Carnival for kids and families with special needs. These kids with special needs are “Very Important People,” according to the club members. The goal of this event is to provide families of children with special needs a friendly environment where kids can be kids and enjoy the American tradition of carnivals. This carnival is a stress free event without the emotional or physical drain on parents who might worry if my kids will fit in, or can physically cope in a chaotic environment. It is a free event so that no additional financial burden is placed on the family whose goal should be simply to enjoy a family night out. Participants will leave Lions Park with a feeling of having fun, but more importantly - feeling like they belonged. It is an evening of fun, rides, and smiles. The spectacular night includes dinner for the entire family and wristbands for two - to enjoy unlimited free access to all the rides at the Fall Festival
carnival in Lions Park. The VIP carnival includes dinner, train rides, games and fun. Extra professionally trained staff will be present to assist in helping kids on rides. These designated riders will be roaming the carnival to ride
the rides along with the VIPs. Look for the yellow shirts saying “Designated Rider.” To learn more about the VIP event or to register your family, visit www.eventbrite.com and search “VIP Carnival.”
Grab a glass in the Big Top Lounge By Sophie Pappas • sophie@youarecurrent.com Although for some people a controversial affair, the Big Top Lounge, is making it’s debut during the circus-themed Zionsville Lions Club Fall Festival this year. With music, food and beverages, this tented area is for party-goers age 21 and older.
“Some Lions Club members didn’t like the idea of serving beverage at Fall Fest,” said Lions Club member Leigh Ann Akard. “But overall it’s really fun and it actually keeps parents and guardians in the park to help supervise their kids.” Akard said that parents will be able to sit in the lounge while their pre-teens and teenagers enjoy the Saturday night LeoPalooza event at the
gazebo. There will be live music, including the locallyfavorite band, Last Call. In lieu of a cover charge for the big tent, donations to the Lions Club will be accepted at the entrance. Drinks and festivities begin at 5 p.m., Sept. 6. Live music will begin at 7 p.m.

Fall Fest helping to promote PE for Life
HIDDEN TREASURES
Zionsville Pickers
Commentary by Kristina Moreland Co-owner of Body Outfitters of Zionsville Teaching our children to value and care for their physical fitness from an early age is critical to their overall well-being and ability to fully engage life’s unlimited opportunities. The education and movement experiences provided by Physical Education classes at the elementary level are essential to laying this foundation. The current school funding situation has caused many school districts to have to cut jobs, close schools, and eliminate programs. Zionsville Community Schools was not untouched by this, and we all have felt the loss of programs in our schools, specifically physical education at the elementary level. Body Outfitters Personal Training Studio in Zionsville, along with the residents of the town, is concerned by this situation but believes this community’s people, businesses, and leaders have the energy, passion, and resources to be part of the solution to this PE deficit. Why is BO getting involved? Two of our company’s Core Values align us with this initiative. 1. Body Outfitters is committed to directing people of all ages towards better physi-
