[ As the show went on the road, even the most well rehearsed musicians found themselves making mistakes, but what they learned is that no matter what happens the show must go on. ]

A

s the curtain opens, musicians find themselves feeling nervous and scared. Musicians have many different emotions when they perform from butterflies to jitters . “I feel proud and confident when I play,” said CY Jeon, 8. Music students often have a tough act to follow and tend to make mistakes because of the pressure of performing in front of a large crowd. It is important for them to get their act together and go on even if they do make a mistake for the sake of the group. “After I make a mistake, I just keep going and stay focused on the music,” said Valentina Moreno, 7. Students eventually learn how to overcome their mistakes and go on. “I try to fix my mistakes and I learn not to regret anything,” said Dhabitah Zailani, 8. It’s okay for them to make mistakes because it happens to everyone, they learn from it and there is a great chance anyway that the audience will probably not even notice. As anything in life, the show must go on and students will always make mistakes. They need to just remember that they must keep going

espite the juggle between their studies and the play, students in Mulan Jr. manage to bring honor to the stage and their teachers with guidance from their

ancestors. Like Mushu, some students find it difficult to honor their work, while others were like Mulan, successfully defeating their obstacles.

Students have different methods of getting

their work done. Some rely on the help of their lucky crickets, although this is a risky move. “I would watch the leads and pretend to do my homework, then I would go home and do it. It was hard to keep up, but I got through it,” said Lauren Ford, 7, who played a daughter and a Hun. Others use self discipline to get the job done. “It wasn’t re-

2

ally easy, as soon as I got home, I had to change my mind to homework and not take a break,” said Yenzi Mseleku, 7, who played one of the ancestors. Lastly, some conquer

ear me roar? Making themselves heard, volleyball players yap up a storm of verbal activity in order ‘to call it’ a successful season. On the volleyball court communication is everything. “Communication is a key element to playing volleyball, since you have to be able to know as a team who will be getting the ball. In order to play successful volleyball you need to communicate,” said Melina Ankel, 8. The teams squalled and squawked to get this right. “We had to communicate effectively by calling out whenever the ball came to our side of the court. Volleyball is a sport that includes communication and collaboration,” said Jakob Toews, 7. The volleyball teams have different ways of communicating with each other. Some shriek and whoop all game long to tell their teammates who will be playing the ball. While others like the U-15 team made hand gestures because, “We wanted to have an original way of communicating that nobody would understand, ” said Jenny Fagervik, 7. But nobody is perfect and sometimes things happen, or don’t happen.“Our team was generally good at communicating, but sometimes we were not which lead to losing the game,” said Melina. In the the end the teams learned that clamoring at each other was the solution to a successful outcome

o be the bomb in any sport, teamwork is a main necessity. But what does teamwork mean to the players? Is it straight up collaboration? Or does the word ‘teamwork’ mean jus’ more? “To me, teamwork means to work together, and collaborate with one another to get something done as a group,” said Eray Schulz, 8. Some of our gangsta’s feel that teamwork is an aspect you need to achieve with other peeps, and something you need to achieve to own any playing field. “The U-13 girls team uses teamwork because without it what would we have done? We always make sure that we work as a group,” said Sahana Brahmal, 7. As proud Panthers from the hood, we strongly depend on our homies to have our backs during games, to be down with trying new things and taking the cap for each other. “My teamwork has improved because we spend a lot of time together as a team,”said Nathan Smith, 6. No matter what, students should know that dope kicks and cool saves aren’t the only thing that can help you win a game, teamwork can be a bumping way to help your brotha’s out and do the best your team can do.

Every step gets me one step closer to my goal,” said Yohei Teragaki, 8. Every runner had there own way of pushing themselves to the finish line. “When I run I focus on getting in front of the person ahead of me or sometimes my goal is simply to finish the race. I when I am finally there, I feel like I have proven to myself that I can do it,” said Reagan Walker, 6. Creepy Story with Mr. Peters

T

his is a true story that happened when I was just in 7th grade. I was a young boy, a newspaper boy to be exact. I was delivering papers early in the morning. There was a clothesline quite close to where I was. On it was a black sheet fluttering in the wind. I thought it was strange because it was late fall and it was cold and windy. It had been raining for the past few days so no one would have their clothes hung outside to dry. As I put the newspaper on the door something else caught my eye, something that didn’t look right. It gave me shivers down my back. I looked back towards the clothesline and the sheet that had been hung now was wrapped around the white luminous face. The face stared at me for some time. I was frozen to the spot on my bicycle like a statue. After what seemed like a long time, the black sheet with the glowing face flew away from me over the houses and into the darkness. I rubbed my eyes and blinked several times. For the last time I looked back at the clothesline. The black sheet was gone! I will never forgot that very scary experience.

A

girl plays hide and seek with her teddy bear. She hides the teddy under her bed and counts to ten. She seeks for the teddy bear and when she finds him she tells him it is his turn to seek her. The girl hides the teddy bear as far as she can from her closet. Then she hides herself in the closet. A few minutes later she hears footsteps and somebody tries to open the closet door but can’t because it’s locked. She then hears typing sounds from her computer keyboard. After a time it seems safe to leave the closet. The teddy bear lays on the ground bleeding and on the computer screen on the Google search bar is typed: ‘how to open a closet door’.

{ It’s not rocket science! Our art geniuses experimented with all their energy to create new and exciting projects. } lowing up the art studio with experimentation, students are ‘mad artist’ about art class. “This year I have learnt many new techniques that I can use in my artwork. I also enjoy creating new things,” said Hannah Pettersson, 6. During class time, our geniuses are testing their hypotheses by experimenting with different colors and dissecting materials to create their final masterpiece. “I liked art because you are free to explore ideas and our teachers let us try new things,” said Martha Harrison, 7. But when balancing opinions some people had a more difficult time in art class. “I don’t really like art class that much. I find it challenging because I am not a very creative person. Though every year I try my hardest and try to enjoy it,” said Shivank Kalliat Chali, 8. At the end of the day, many hypotheses were proven and explained. But overall, both art lovers and challenged artists, came out with a great knowledge of the science of art.

[ Whether they are in an apron or in costume, dancers used their creativity to create masterpieces on stage. ] t takes an artist weeks to produce a fine work of art, just as it takes a dancer time and creativity to sculpt a beautiful piece. Students have seen a wide palette of different styles of dancing on stage during shows and performance assemblies, but what they do not see is the multiple brush strokes it takes to create a dance full of balance and movement. Creating a performance is challenging. Dancers draw out a careful plan and work hard at designing every step, overcoming many difficulties along the way. “It was really fun trying to come up with new dance. But it is frustrating when you can’t get the moves right,” said Nour Sebbar, 7. They also put long hours, sometimes even working past 6 o’clock in the evening! Dancing brings together a mix of textures from different students from all three grades. Working

I

together on a dance gave them a opportunity to meet new people and explore different perspectives. “It is really great to collaborate with your group because you become closer and you make new friends,” said Sierra Brown, 8. And it was just simply a lot of fun.“It was really fun working with our group. It was a great experience overall because all the hard work paid off in the end,” said Tanisha Dighe, 6. At the end of the journey each masterpiece was complete. Every dancer had done their part in framing the final product. “When I finish a dance routine, I just want to smile because of all the effort and work I put into the danc.e It payed off and I want to do it again,” said Sierra Brown, 8. And no matter what style style each dancer decided to paint, classical to modern, each piece became a beautiful masterpiece.

{ After some challenges and set-backs, the track team blossomed in a strong team that zoomed ahead to beautiful victory. } espite having low attendance at the beginning of the season, the track team grew swiftly and blossomed into a strong group. At first, there were only a few of them but they still practiced vigorously, bolting down the track and darting over high jump bars. They tried hard to be better and better everyday, carefully tended and watered with knowledge by their coaches. Later on more people came in, drop by drop, for different reasons. Some chose to come back with a newly sprouted sense of motivation. “Members of the team who had originally signed up started coming back because they realized how lazy they had become,” said Cooper Wiberg, 6. Although others came back with other more specific motives. “They came back after realizing that the ISAC meet was approaching, and that it would be really fun,” said Ramon Viegas, 8. Finally others returned for what matters most, their friends. “People started coming back because of their friends. Without friends on the team, it just wouldn’t be fun,” said Dive Eratjomo, 7. Finally, the homegrown track athletes were united and intertwined into a competitive team. During the season, the speedy team crossed the finish line first many times and records were broken. It was the group’s ability to weather droughts and wild storms, that helped them blossom into a winning team.

{ With all fair in love and war, players shot for the hoops fairly to defeat their opponents in the war of basketball. } n a sport where things can become dirty, our players believe in playing a fair game. In all fairness, the basketball teams dribbled their way into championship games to bring back medals in honor of the school’s name. “What is the point of playing if you are going to cheat? You’ll never actually know if you are any good if you cheat. For us to be fair, we played by the book. They knew they did their best, and they didn’t feel guilty which they would have if they had cheated,” said Nour Sebbar, 7. After a long battle of defending and offending, players drove the ball to the basket without a struggle. Charging at the opponent’s defense, teammates depended on each other to make a clear shots. It’s fair to say that the player aimed to make the shots that got them to win the fair bet. “Playing fair is important because it’s just much more fun when everyone follows the rules and without the rules the game won’t be as fun as it is now. You have to accept the referee’s decisions, encourage your teammates, shake hands with the opponents at the end of the game, and try not to foul. You feel happy if you play a fair game even if you don’t win. It only matters that you made new friends and memories that might last forever,” said Jemma Hamzah, 6. To be a praiseworthy champion, players should be responsible in order to be an upright role model. “Playing fair is important because it makes the game much more valuable and fun. To be fair you are always respectful to the other team, the referee and your players. You don’t argue with the referee, and you follow everything he/she says. When you play a fair game you are satisfied and even if you didn’t win, you know you played the right way,” said Melina Ankel, 8. After the last buzzer went off, players wrapped up the tournament with a hand shake with the opponents. It’s only fair to say that all the other schools did equally well and in the end everyone is a star.

{ In the ultimate battle, the U-13 and U-15 basketball teams train to slay the competition and achieve extreme conquest. }

A

s the U-13 and U-15 Basketball Boys teams went to war, they fought their way through the season with many tactics to become victorious. Their first fight approach, good coaching. “Our coach influenced the win of the team because he never gave up on us and he was determined. When times were low, he gave us the motivation we needed to play good basketball,” said Ramon Viegas, 8. They also prepared the team with an arsenal of knowledge on the game and encouraged the teams even as they were being demolished by their opponents. The second fight approach, a good attitude. “Players showed support, enthusiasm and determination to help bring them to victory,” said Ben Cooper, 7. In war, thinking positively will help the outcome become positive too. Believing in each other will also help players feel motivated to do their best for their team. The third fight approach: Teamwork. “We learned each other’s ways and knew what they were going to do, so we were prepared to be where people expected us to be,” said Evan Ortiz, 6. Working and practicing with your teammates is a crucial tactic to winning the battle because as players get to understand each other’s way of playing, they will be able to predict what works best for success. With these approaches, both teams marched through the season looking to claim a medal in the final tournament. The battles were close but the players kept fighting until the buzzer rang. They practiced and worked hard, therefore winning the battle and achieving great victory, resulting in silver for the U-13 team and gold for the U-15 team.

Where will you be going after ISKL? What are you looking forward to doing there?

I am moving to Shanghai, China, to serve as a MS Counselor at Shanghai American School (Pudong campus). I am excited to experience the vibe of this very cosmopolitan city, explore its old neighborhoods, and awe at its modern side too! And, then, there is the food! I can be adventurous, but I do have some limits. Another hope I have is

A

to travel to Beijing and walk on the Great Wall of China.

[ Pg. 168 ]

} Q

What is something that your students do not know about you and would be surprised to know?

A

That I was bullied in Middle School and I survived. I learned the importance of staying true to yourself, being true to others, spending time with people who genuinely care about you and who ‘have your back’ and letting go of relationships that leave you feeling empty or unhappy.

Q A

What is your favorite color and why? Blue as it reminds me of blue skies and the many hues of blue in our seas and oceans. I am happiest at the beach and in the water.

Q A

Tell us about your overall experience at ISKL?

If I could create a Wordle to describe my experience, these would be included: Exciting / Fun / Adolescence / Laughter / Tears / Challenges / Malaysia Week / Funky Smells / Rewarding / Caring Teachers / Tremendous Growth / Opportunities / Palko / Peer Helpers / Activities, Activities, Activities / Eclipse Mints / Friendships / Teaching Health and ‘The Talk’ / Maturation / Assemblies / Athletics / Homegroup / Ms. Thompson, Miss Mimi, and Miss Teepa / Kuala Lumpur / Diving with Students (where else does that happen?) / Smiles / and many, many more.

Where will you be going after ISKL? What are you looking forward to doing there? We are moving to Vienna, Austria. I am looking forward to working with the former ISKL principal and living in Vienna beccause of the music, the culture, the city, the trains, the snow!

Q A

What is something that your students do not know about you and would be surprised to know? Since I have tripped over the cords in my room so many times, they might be surprised that I took 10 years of ballet.

Q A

What is your favorite color and why? I love the green color of the grass, the forest, the jungle, really any shade of green.

Tell us about your overall experience at ISKL?

This has been an amazing 10 years! Our daughter, Elisabeth, went through high school our first four years, so we were involved in the school by being parents of an athlete and a musician, as well as teaching in the middle school. She had a positive experience through her classes and her activities in music, drama and athletics. ISKL will always be such a special place for her with very warm memories!

Tell us about your overall experience at ISKL? It has been great. I have had the privilege of meeting and working with outstanding students, teachers, administrators and support staff.

Q A q A

Tell us about an embarrassing moment that you have had while teaching at ISKL? While racing to the canteen to get lunch, one of my shoes slipped off. Since I was walking down the stairs, I proceeded to trip and slide all the way down the stairs, in front of all the students. I was bruised for a week after that!

Q A

What is your favorite color? Oh jeez, I have to pick a favorite color?? Well, I’d have to say purple and green because those were the colors of my wedding. Thinking of my wedding day always makes me smile.

What is something that your students do not know about you and would be surprised to know?

This is tough because I’m pretty much an open book. Let me think... I am the complete opposite when it comes to teaching versus being a student myself. When I’m the teacher, I enjoy being in front of the class. I am not afraid to be myself and act goofy. When I’m in a student role, I am usually very quiet. I am not confident in myself and often do not want to be called on for fear of sounding foolish.

Has working at ISKL changed you? Yes, I am now a better teacher. My coworkers are so knowledgeable and caring; they have taught me more than they’ll ever know. I have also become a more well-rounded person. I feel that I have learned from all of the different people and the different cultures they are a part of.

} Creating the yearbook was fun but it was also a challenging experience as we had many deadlines we couldn’t miss.

I liked to create the music page because I did it on my own and I felt that I had independence. Also it was cool to see the opinions of our middle schoolers when it came to music and their different tastes.

This class was very hard but I learned a lot of skills that I will use in the future. Throughout the year I have had a fun experience and I also like the fact that I can be responsible for making something that the entire school gets to enjoy.

My color is yellow. I think the color describes me because I’m always willing to help other people, even if it means going a little out of my way to do it. I also try my best to be nice to everyone, because you never know what they’re going through.

If I could go back to one moment this year during the yearbook class it would be when we had to create our own page from scratch as this took a long time and was the hardest assignment.

It is a lot of hard work but nothing great comes easy and it’s great to work with all of the classmates in creating creative pages and such.

My favourite page to create would be the first page I made with Bianca covering Week 7 of our school year. I enjoyed making this page because after all the strict training we were finally allowed to begin making the yearbook.

My personality color is orange. It describes me because it is a calm color and I enjoy things like reading and photography. I was hoping for the color green because just about everything I own is green.

The person that’s inspired me on staff was Alex because he was my first partner for our very first page and it was nice to have someone to fall back on, especially Alex, because I knew I could count on him.

I’m orange because I’m outgoing and I don’t keep to myself. I’m very much a people person and I like being social. I prefer hanging out with my friends and I like having fun. I get bored easily and I like adventure.

I would go back to the time when everyone was working and having fun at the same time. It was really great because we were having fun, but still getting work done.

I think that the theme is a really fun and cool idea. At first I wasn’t really pumped about the idea of having it but towards the end I liked it more and more.

My color is yellow, which is the color of sunshine. It’s associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. Those are some words that describes me. I am very joyful and energetic and happy most of the time.

One moment in the yearbook class I would go back to would be surveying people for hte Student Life polls because I find it interesting to know what people pick.

My favorite page was the Boys Basketball page because I played basketball this year. I thought it was cool that one of the players could help making that specific yearbook page.

I think it theme is a very neat idea because I have never seen a yearbook that gets to know each classmate so well.

The class was really good because we learn a lot of different things, like designing, photoshopping and taking photos. It was also hard to meeting the deadlines but it was fun and interesting.

My color is orange and my color means that I am very outgoing. I like to be the center of attention, I take risks and I can be very inspiring.

One person that inspired me on the YB staff was Jasmin. She’s a very carefree person but always on task, works hard, always positive and happy. Jasmin always helped me when I needed it.

I think the color personality theme is a great way to show everyone what the MS is like, from the people to the activities we have. I also think it is a really cool how the theme allows us to tell people what the color is.

I liked creating the Student Life page because we basically made it from scratch. It was our own page and we could make it however we wanted it to look.

It was hard to create the yearbook because when you make a yearbook, you want to make sure it will impress the whole school.

It was a fun experience it taught me a lot about graphic design and I became closer with a lot of people that I didn’t know before I took the class. It also taught me a lot about the production that is behind every page and every yearbook.

I think that there is a lot of profiling in today’s world and while some of it may be for our own security it reduces people to something less than their real character. This color system really looks at the content of people’s character.

MJ My color is orange and it describes me well because I am quite impulsive. I don’t think before I act sometimes. I am also a bit creative. I have a big imagination box in my head.

I think the theme of the yearbook is wonderful because we used colors which means we got to do lots of things with the theme. I think the book is creative and designed well. I personally like it because it is interesting. I think many people will really like it too.

My favorite page to create was the Student Life page because we got to choose our own topic, side bars and polls and interview people. We also took pictures of the people that we interviewed which was a little awkward but it was interesting and fun.

I really like the theme because it is a bit different than past years. The theme is fun and colorful which makes people happy. It is also cool because it is interactive as you can find out what color you are.

I think creating the yearbook was really fun. The whole process of creating the yearbook was filled with new experiences and new information. I was able to learn a lot while making the yearbook with the rest of the class and I felt I have improved on my skills.

I think that the color personality theme is a really good way to showcase the diversity and uniqueness of our whole school. It’s really cool to be able to see what color our friends are, compare them to ours and ultimately learn more about everyone in the MS.

My favorite page to create was the Student Life page. We had to do a page about the trends in middle school. My partner and I worked really hard on this page. The page is colourful, interesting and fun to look at.

The one person that inspired me was Bailey. She was always focused and was always on task. She knows what to do and she is full of creative ideas.

If I could go back to one moment this year during the yearbook class, it would be when we got to discuss themes. I loved being creative and thinking of all the possible themes we could use for the YB. I really expressed my creativity.

I think that the theme is very creative and I think that the middle school will like it a lot because it is fun.

My color is purple. Purple people are honest, organized, independent, gets things done, follows directions, can be impatient, thorough, need for a compliment. I think that I am a very independent student, and a organized one too.

My color is yellow. The best way that it describes me is when I make people laugh until their lungs burst. I like seeing warmth spreads on everyone faces and that is why I like when people smile around me.

Q uestions & A nswers with m s. c asares

ISKL is a very diverse place. This is what makes our school so special. We wanted to make a book that represented that everyone is unique but we make one united middle school, but we wanted to do it with a unique and fun twist. Everyone loves reading their horoscopes or finding out something special about themselves, so we figured that reflecting student’s personalities through color would be super fun.

Q

How does this compare to other books that you have created with students before?

In my 10 years as yearbook adviser I have never had such a balanced yearbook. Everyone and every subject matter is in the book. Just take a look at the index, it speaks for itself.

Q A

How was the making of this yearbook?

This book was incredible challenging to but together, especially because we wanted everyone represented equally. The staff worked really hard to learn what it takes to make a great book and apply it. I think they were all very surprised with how much work it was, but I know that they will always be proud of what they created. I know that I am personally very proud of them and the book. I am confident that people will enjoy it very much.

Any other thoughts that you would like to share? Yeah, I wanted to thank my staff for making this possible. It’s a beautiful book! I also want to thank the people that helped along the way. It is truly takes collaborating constructively to make such a big project possible. And know, go and enjoy!

Our Colorful Year

B

efore we knew it, the year had come and gone. We’d been through art classes and activities, field trips and tournaments, drama and dance. Students have matured, as knowledge was gained, and understanding increased. Having started off as apprentices, by the end of the year the sixth graders were creating their own masterpieces. Perfecting their craft, seventh graders got ready to be the masters of creativity. 8th graders got ready to leave the drying rack of middle school, to be put on exhibition in high school. In the past year, with the help of our friends, teachers and parents, students have reinvented themselves, repainted their own canvases, been shaped by their experiences and revealed their “True Colors.”
