The Graduate Certificate in Business (GCB) and the Graduate Diploma in Business (GDB) are stand-alone qualifications that can also act as stepping stones to further studies at the CGSB. STUDYING LEADERSHIP AT THE CGSB

Master of Business Leadership (MBL)

Developing future leaders is at the core of the Curtin MBL, formerly the Master of Leadership and Management (MLM), one of the longest running masters-level leadership courses in Australia. This program offers the integration of theoretical frameworks and applied knowledge developing graduates prepared to address current and future leadership challenges in the global environment. Immersing you in a diverse program with real-world challenges, this course introduces you to a wide range of leadership scenarios and practical course work. This program will enhance and further develop key talents enabling graduates to lead in a responsible manner that is ethical and sustainable, innovative and inclusive.

This course has provided me with an invaluable insight into the secrets of ‘harnessing human effort towards a cause’, whilst also providing me a very in-depth understanding of my own strengths and weaknesses. This in turn has allowed me to leverage the opportunity to significantly change my career path mid-stream by understanding what I really want to do in my working life.. Ian Jackson, Best Graduating Leadership Student (2007)

Master of Business Leadership (MBL) 196604 The MBL is structured to give participants a deep understanding of relevant theoretical frameworks and it challenges participants to demonstrate leadership in practice. The course consists of three key focus areas and is designed to develop the understanding that leadership occurs at the intersection of people, thinking and organisational skills. We work with individuals to identify your key talents and build on them with a dynamic study schedule aimed at producing leaders ready to make a positive difference. This will enable you as a mid to senior leader or an emerging young leader to advance your leadership career. International students in full-time study must complete the MBL within a 16 month period. Please check our website for timetabling information: gsb.curtin.edu.au

Jon Roestenburg Managing Director of the ASX-listed company, Monitor Energy Ltd (ASX: MHL), and Managing Director and Principle Geoscientist, Geotransformations Pty Ltd

What does your job involve? My role at Monitor involves a range of duties including upholding the principles of corporate responsibility in the growth and development of the company within the oil, gas and energy sector, having responsibility for all fiscal aspects of the company’s exposure to foreign risk and political points of difference and monitoring the development of the company’s strategies in relation to new business ventures and growth opportunities. At Geotransformations, I manage a specialist consultancy involving international and local petroleum companies and organisations. Why Curtin? As a Western Australian resource specialist, whose original Science degrees were from Curtin, I could think of no better institution than Curtin to continue my formal education. Curtin has a sound international reputation and offers one of the few combined leadership and business administration masters-level programs anywhere in the world. I believe the combination of business, ethics and human resource development must be relevant in the community in which it is offered. Curtin, based in WA, the state now considered by many to be the leading economic powerhouse for Australia, has a unique opportunity to deliver fit-for-purpose, post-graduate education to a market in which the type of outcomes stemming from a leadership degree are most relevant. Tell us about your CGSB experience. My experience at the CGSB was nothing short of transformational. When I started the program, I was unsure of my capacity as a manager and did not understand the difference between ‘management’ and ‘leadership’. One is often taken to mean the other yet nothing is further from the truth. I made a point of finding out how I could learn to lead, work better with teams of people and better manage the multitude of corporate tasks that are normal in business today. Studying part-time while working allowed me to structure my learning over a time frame where it was possible to assimilate and apply many of the lessons learned along the way. As a mature-age student, I also felt it important to set myself up as a role model not only for those in my working life, but also for my family as well. I was very fortunate to be able to study at university alongside my oldest son, Ben. We were in the same course and at one point in the same unit and worked as team members on the same assignment. It was a unique and truly inspiring experience. The lasting result of the joint learning was that our team was able to create a local solution to a global problem involving urban congestion that has ramifications on a global scale. What have you gained from this program? Curtin’s leadership program unleashed a passion and enthusiasm for innovation, creativity and learning within myself that was dormant. It has expanded my insight into people and has completely re-sculpted my thinking and behaviour in the business and corporate environment, also allowing me to better engage with the international communities I work within. Graduating has given me a sense of self-achievement and has allowed me to make many new friends and colleagues through the CGSB alumni. It has created a love of life-long learning within my whole family and was achievable because of the support and encouragement from my partner, Barb.

STUDYING RESOURCES AT THE CGSB

Master programs in Mineral Economics, Energy Economics and Management

Appreciating the business and economic framework in which the resources sector operates requires a suitable knowledge of economic, financial, management, legal, regulatory, political and social environments. Good resource sector managers must combine this with sound technical knowledge of exploration, extraction, and processing. This makes Curtin’s Mineral Economics programs a special and exciting field of study. Its interdisciplinary nature formalises and melds your significant management experience and technical skills. The Department of Mineral Economics and Energy (DMEE) originated within the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) in Kalgoorlie, a prominent mining town for over a century. Since its foundation in 1902, WASM has earned a reputation as an important centre of mining education both within Australia and internationally. DMEE has established a strong international reputation for excellence in education and research in mineral economics and is now proudly housed at the CGSB. Our linkages with the resources industry have given students the opportunity to gain a high quality education that combines practical and theoretical elements building most effectively on the strong partnership between the CGSB and WASM.

Undertaking the MME-MBA was a real eye-opener. One of the things this course surprised me with is just how many options there are. As a mining engineer you had two choices: you go down the field of being a practical manager; or you go the opposite direction as a highly technical expert. And those fields never crossed. It was rare to find someone with a strong technical background who was in a management position. But now I realise that’s possible...I know there are so many different opportunities. Lisa O’Connor undertook her MME-MBA while working as an Underground Planning Engineer for BHP Billiton in Leinster, WA.

Master of SCIENCE (Mineral Economics)/ Master of Business Administration 307426 This double masters degree combines the financial and economic resource sector focus of the Mineral Economics (ME) program with the strong management and business emphasis of the Curtin MBA. The curriculum has a highly applied practical focus and is delivered by leading academics and business practitioners. It seeks to equip graduates with a range of analytical and managerial skills that are suitable for senior management and decision making roles in mining and energy companies.

ME units are delivered in intensive mode in four and eight day blocks over a three week period. MBA Units are delivered online, intensive and face-to-face dependent on unit selection. International students in full time study must complete the MME-MBA within a 2.5 year period. Please check our website for timetabling information: gsb.curtin.edu.au

CGSB Professional Portfolio GSB Alumni GSB Toastmasters Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) at the CGSB

CGSB Professional portfolio In the past, student participation in extracurricular activities at the CGSB has been entirely voluntary and not officially recognised by the School. In an effort to formalise these efforts and in response to feedback from learning facilitators, employers and students, the CGSB is recognising student participation in extracurricular professional and career development activities through the development of the CGSB Professional Portfolio. Many professional bodies require their members to participate in continued professional development. The CGSB Professional Portfolio is similar in this regard; the goal being to improve students’ technical and professional skills and as a result, their career prospects. The Professional Portfolio is a tool for extending and developing professional development opportunities for CGSB students. It is a practical way to build on skills learned through our coursework and also contributes to the CGSB’s strategy of encouraging life-long learning. As part of the CGSB’s requirements for graduation, all MBL and MBA students are required to complete at least 40 hours of professional development. All GCB and GDB students are also encouraged to participate in Portfolio activities and maintain a Portfolio Log in the event that they decide to continue studies in an MBA or MBL program. Recognised Portfolio activities include, but are not limited to attendance at CGSB seminars and workshops; participation in CGSB Alumni and Toastmasters functions; attendance at work-related conferences and undertaking the CGSB International study tour. For a full list of recognised Portfolio activities, please visit our website: gsb.curtin.edu.au
