Farewell, With Our Gratitude
Letter from the Head of School Dear Curtis Community,
ATHULA ATURUGIRIGE At the end of the school year, we said farewell to Athula Aturugirige, Curtis School’s Maintenance Supervisor and one of the longest serving employees in the school’s history. Athula has been a much beloved member of our community for 33 years, as attested to by the many current and former families, faculty, and staff who turned out to honor him at a farewell celebration in June. During his long tenure, Athula was a steadfast partner of two facilities managers, five heads of school, and 33 Parents Association boards—supervising the setup and breakdown of as many Curtis Fairs. Athula has been a generous, willing, and hardworking colleague, who facilitated many thousands of events over the course of his career at Curtis. He tended the campus with loving, personal care. He selected and planted many of the trees that grace our grounds and make Curtis such a uniquely beautiful place to work and learn—a legacy that will continue to enhance the experience of all who set foot on our campus. We will miss our dear friend and coworker who loves Curtis like a second home, as he moves on to spend more time with his family and to travel. But we have his promise that he will be back often to visit.
LINDA POLAN After 16 years at Curtis, teacher Linda Polan retired at the end of the school year. Linda has established a legacy that will long be remembered at Curtis. For many years, she worked alongside Sue Nihiser as a co-lead teacher in 1st grade, and most recently she taught 2nd grade with Deborah Seidner. For 14 years, Linda was also the Associate Teacher and Teaching Partner Representative. Her leadership and mentorship of so many associate teachers has been valued and appreciated not just at Curtis but in the larger educational arena as well. It is due to her tutelage that so many former associates are now in lead teaching positions here and at other esteemed independent schools. Linda helped train our teachers in the Lucy Calkins Writers Workshop curriculum and she loved teaching writing to her own students. She also was brilliant at working with early readers. Linda’s positive impact on so many generations of Curtis students and families is reflected in the many expressions of appreciation we received for her after Curtis announced her retirement. We are so grateful to Linda for her years of dedication to the school and the care with which she prepared her students for the next stages of their education.
The 2018–2019 school year was a year to envision our future—for our community to inspire and help chart a course for the next chapter in Curtis’s long and treasured history. We embarked on a strategic planning process by asking ourselves: “Who are we at our core?” and “If we, as a school and community, imagine our best selves years from now, what will it take to achieve that vision?” Thanks to the thought partnership, commitment, passion, and dedication of all members of our community, Curtis has affirmed its vision, confirmed its mission, and articulated its purpose and core values. Most importantly, we have charted a course for the future that ensures the highest quality education for our students in an ever-changing world. Among those who have been our partners in establishing Curtis as a preeminent elementary school and preparing us for an even greater future are two longstanding and beloved members of our faculty and staff who retired at the end of the school year: Athula Aturugirige and Linda Polan. We thank them both for their dedication and wish them well as they begin a new chapter in their lives. One of our school’s greatest strengths is our engaged, active, and supportive Curtis community. The work our community undertook to realize the strategic plan is a rich example of its commitment to our school, for which the board and I are so grateful. Outside of the time and effort devoted to helping envision our future, the Curtis community showed its unwavering dedication and generosity through time, talent, effort, and monetary gifts generously given during the year. My heartfelt appreciation goes out to parents, grandparents, alumni families, and faculty and staff who help to ensure our ability to realize the school’s mission and future, and most importantly, ensure that our students are provided with the quality education they deserve. Warm regards,
DR. MEERA RATNESAR
Head of School

Board of Trustees
Dear Curtis Families,
2018–2019
2019–2020
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank all Curtis families, past and present, faculty and staff, and the many friends of our school for making the 2018–2019 Annual Fund a great success. In addition, I want to thank the Parents Association for the countless ways that it has helped to create such an amazingly supportive and inviting community. Only with the support of so many dedicated people can we continue to grow and develop and provide our students with a rewarding and well-rounded education.

We accomplished much this year but nothing as important and impactful as the “Envision Our Future” strategic plan. The strategic plan was truly a collaborative effort, including input from every constituency of our community. I am very excited about the future of Curtis as Dr. Ratnesar, the administration, faculty, and staff embark on a journey to implement this new plan over the next five years.

At the end of the school year, we bid farewell to two longstanding trustees who dedicated an extraordinary amount of time and effort to Curtis. Judy Codding served for eight years. Her international educational experience and service as an academic liaison were instrumental in guiding the board in matters of school curriculum. Kathy Shane served for six years in a variety of roles, including Chair of the Finance Committee and member of the Committee on Trustees and the Head of School Committee. Her input on key decisions was invaluable to the board. We thank Judy and Kathy for their dedication to Curtis School.

Welcome to Our New Trustees We at Curtis School are excited to welcome three new members to our Board of Trustees. We are grateful for their willingness to serve our school in this important capacity.
KAVITHA BHATIA, MD, MMM, FAAP A current Curtis parent, Kavitha Bhatia is the Chair of the Prime Healthcare Foundation, one of the nation’s largest health systems, and serves as Prime’s Chief Medical Officer of Strategy, leading strategic innovation, system-wide value creation, and excellence initiatives. She is Founding Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for California University of Science and Medicine, a newly established non-profit medical school made possible by the Prime Healthcare Foundation.
Erikson Albrecht is a current Curtis parent and is Directing Attorney at Bet Tzedek Legal Services, a non-profit law firm that provides free legal services to more than 20,000 individuals each year. He supervises many of Bet Tzedek’s legal policy and programs, including conservatorship, guardianship, unaccompanied minor removal defense, in-home supportive services, and a transgender medical-legal partnership.
Kavitha graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a B.S. in Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of California, San Diego. She received her medical degree from the UCLA School of Medicine, graduating with Honors and Letters of Distinction in Doctoring. She earned a Masters of Medical Management from the USC Marshall School of Business and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Prior to joining Bet Tzedek, Erikson was a criminal defense attorney and Deputy Public Defender in Santa Cruz County. During college and law school, he worked at the Ariel Foundation (now the Ariel Education Initiative), addressing the academic and social service needs of children and their families in an underserved community on the South Side of Chicago. This effort culminated in the creation of a new public school with an innovative investment curriculum.
Her career has focused on improving the health and lives of others. Her experiences have been broad, including practicing pediatrics, caring for the dying in the slums of Calcutta, and teaching inner city youth. She was awarded a Miraculous Medallion from Mother Teresa for her work with Missionaries of Charity, and she has been an advisor for national and global causes including the World Children’s Initiative. Kavitha is also Executive Director of the Reddy Family Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving healthcare and educational opportunities for the underserved through educational grants and charitable initiatives. Kavitha and her husband, Sunny, are the proud parents of Shay (6th grade), Lia (5th grade) and Layla (3rd grade).

ERIKSON ALBRECHT
Erikson previously served on the Board of Directors of Journey Out, a non-profit organization leading the fight for freedom and survival of people whose lives have been impacted by human trafficking or commercial sexual exploitation. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Erikson earned an A.B. in Public Policy. He received his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law at Illinois Institute of Technology. Erikson and his wife, Melissa, are the proud parents of a daughter, Quinn, who is in 2nd grade, and adoring uncle and aunt of Curtis student Harper (5th grade) and Curtis alumnus Gideon Evans ’19.
CRAIG VARNEN Craig Varnen is a current Curtis parent and has already been serving Curtis well as a member of the Board’s Finance Committee. A long-time partner at the law firm of Irell & Manella, Craig is an experienced trial attorney who has represented clients in a broad range of complex, “bet the company” disputes. Craig’s practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, with an emphasis on defending companies and their boards of directors and corporate officers in securities-related lawsuits and regulatory proceedings. Craig is also regularly retained to provide advice on issues of fiduciary duty, conduct high profile internal investigations, and handle cases involving trade secrets and employment contracts. He is a member of Irell’s Executive Committee, Vice Chair of the Litigation Group, and Chair of the Securities Litigation Group. Craig graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, San Diego, where he received a B.A. in Economics. He attended law school at the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated Order of the Coif and was an editor for the California Law Review. Prior to joining Irell & Manella, Craig clerked for the Honorable Cynthia Holcomb Hall of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Craig supports a number of local and national charitable organizations and regularly volunteers at pro bono legal organizations and non-profit law firms that provide free legal services to people who live at or below the poverty level. Craig and his wife, Ashley, are the proud parents of twin boys Hunter and Luke, who are in 2nd grade.

2018–2019
The Year of Communication, Community, Caring, and Collaboration! The Curtis Parents Association is a vital and healthy life force of Curtis School. All of the man and woman hours that are dedicated to the care of the school are one of the most important resources of Curtis. In independent schools across the country, when parent associations and administration work together to build a strong sense of community, all of the stakeholders benefit and it helps to further the school’s mission, which in turn enriches the lives of children. This year, with the help of some talented videographers moonlighting as parent volunteers, we found out straight from your children that Curtis School would just be a “regular school” without the Curtis Parents Association. As the PA President, I know this to be true. I have seen first-hand how the involvement of parents has a positive impact and makes a difference for faculty, administration, and most importantly, the children. There are not enough ways to say “thank you” to parent volunteers for the magic they create, which makes Curtis a very “special” place and not a “regular school.” The PA’s indelible footprint, from fundraising for the Curtis Financial Aid Fund through Curtis Celebrates! to the Curtis Fair and all of the meaningful initiatives including Cougar Wear, Practically New, Faculty & Staff Appreciation, Buds, Seedlings, Lost and Found, Families Helping Families, Curtis Cares, Library Maker Days, Go Global Week, International Lunch Day, Parent Enrichment and the support given for Admissions Open Houses, Emerging Artists, Back-to-School Nights, and much, much more, assures that Curtis is a special place where friends are made, volunteer opportunities abound, and community is built. Each year, the positive contribution to school spirit and the accomplishments of the Curtis PA are part of what makes Curtis stand out from other schools! It takes hundreds of people, among parents, faculty, staff members and administration, to fulfill these efforts, and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to lead and collaborate with all of these stakeholders in the Curtis Parents Association’s success. John F. Kennedy said, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” Thank you for your volunteerism, support, and all the learning. With heartfelt gratitude,

One of Curtis School’s greatest assets is our community of families. Each year, through the Parents Association, our parents and guardians generously give their time, talents, and resources to provide services and experiences that enhance the learning environment and overall experience for students, families, faculty, and staff. Curtis is deeply grateful to all who served as PA officers, committee chairs, and volunteers during the 2018–2019 year and contributed in a myriad of ways, from serving lunch, assisting in the library and guiding student community service to fundraising, building community, and making lasting memories for us all.

Curtis School’s 35th school fair was the arts and music festival-themed CurtisFest, and it was everything we love about this annual tradition: amazing rides, games of skill and chance, incredible food and prizes, and most of all, being together with family and friends on our beautiful campus. Thank you to the following families and individuals who sponsored this fabulous day of fun that benefited the Curtis Financial Aid Fund.
We celebrated in style at Le Casino Monte-Curtis, a festive evening of dining, silent and live auctions, and casino games hosted by the Curtis Parents Association at the glamorous Petersen Automotive Museum. Curtis is grateful to the following donors who helped underwrite this fabulous event that brought our community together with proceeds benefiting the Curtis Financial Aid Fund.

Secondary School Placement
Congratulations to our alumni who graduated from high school in 2019. We are proud to share the announcement of their matriculation to some of the finest and most esteemed colleges and universities. We wish them every success as they continue to pursue their educations and passions and take their place in the world.
Curtis School seeks a strong partnership with our families, and this relationship is evident throughout the process of assisting our students with middle school outplacement. Curtis administrators, faculty, and staff work closely with families to identify schools that will be a good fit for their 6th graders. We are proud that our students move on to attend some of the most highly regarded secondary schools in Los Angeles, and this year was no exception. We congratulate the Class of 2019 and look forward to following these bright young people as they grow academically and as contributing members of their school communities. Annual Report 2018–2019

Report on Philanthropy We thank the following individuals and organizations for their gifts to Curtis in the 2018–2019 school year. The generosity of our donors enables Curtis to provide an educational program that prepares young learners to embrace the next phases of their education and lives with joy, confidence, and purpose and to set the standard for elementary education in the Greater Los Angeles area and beyond. We gratefully acknowledge these donors who increased their gift to Curtis in the 2018–2019 year.
Annual Fund The Annual Fund is vital to the school’s financial strength. It provides support for nearly every area of school operations, including educational programs, faculty and staff salaries and benefits, financial aid for students who would otherwise be unable to attend Curtis, and maintenance and improvement of the campus and facilities.

Ways to Give Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of providing an educational program that realizes Curtis’s Vision to inspire engaged, healthy, and empathetic young learners to embrace the next phases of their education and lives with joy, confidence, and purpose. Like other independent schools, Curtis depends on the financial generosity of its community, alumni, and friends of the school to close the gap between tuition and the true cost of a Curtis education. Gifts to the school help cover operating costs and capital improvements, attract and retain an exceptional faculty, and deliver an educational program that sets the standard for elementary education in the Greater Los Angeles area and beyond. You can help support the school’s Mission and Vision by making a gift in the following ways. ONE-TIME GIFTS
MATCHING GIFTS
You may make a one-time gift using a major credit card, cash, or check. To make a gift online, please use the Giving form on the school’s secure website, at www.curtisschool.org/give.
Many companies are willing to match gifts that their employees make to nonprofit organizations like Curtis School. To find out whether your employer might match your gift, please use the search utility that is accessible from the Giving form on the Curtis website, or consult your employer.
With a major credit card, you may make an annual, quarterly, or monthly pledge, or create a custom schedule for pledge payments using the school’s online Giving form.
