CAC had the distinct pleasure of chatting it up with the breathtaking beauties known as the Glamazons. The Glamazons (Meryl “Lady” Finger, Laura “Caramella” Johnson, Shanna “Red Velvet” Sharp, Megan “Sugar Cones” Allen and Katie “Honey Bun” Cass) are a sexy, voluptuous, pop inspired burlesque group based out of NYC. These ladies talents consist of their killer voices, sultry moves, and jaw-dropping curve appeal. They are an international phenomenon with TV appearances, magazine features and show performances from all over the world. To put it simply, the Glamazons are plain unforgettable. Who came up with the concept? MERYL – I started singing and dancing when I was 3 years old and incorporated burlesque into my act in the late 90’s. Growing up with one sister 8 years older was lonely for me. While on the National Tour of the show “GREASE” in the year 2000, I met Allison Tilsen. We were the same height, size; both had red hair and quickly became BFF’s. We dressed alike and everyone teased us and called us “Mary-Kate and Ashley”. I had never met anyone like her before. She was an incredibly talented triple threat (singer, dancer, actress) with a bawdy personality (like me)! She wore bikinis and was proud of every curve in her body. She taught me a lot about my self worth and about sisterhood. I no longer felt alone in the world. She was, and always will be, the twin sister I never had. We did a striptease act at a birthday party once, for fun. Everyone loved us! My mother read an article in People Magazine about a group of plus size Ballet Dancers in Canada. She encouraged me to start a performance group in New York. After telling Allison about this, we were on the search for more full figured gals to grace the stage with. In the beginning, we did burlesque and stripped to pasties! Girls have come and gone over the years. When Laura joined the group, she said she wouldn’t wear pasties. I loved her and was kind over the “shock value” of showing so much skin. The group was ready to really show our true talents!

How did you all meet? MERYL - We had a consistent group of girls for 4 years. Two girls left the group at the end of last year, leaving Laura and I. We had a 6-week competition at Therapy Lounge in NYC called “America’s Next Top Glamazon”. We were looking to pick two new girls, but found three who blew us away! It’s a good thing we did, because I developed tumors in my feet and couldn’t dance for six months after that. I am currently recovering from surgery and will continue to manage the group. I won’t be going back to performing anytime soon, but who knows what the future holds? How did the group get started? MERYL – After holding auditions back in 2001, the original group started out performing at Susanne Bartsch’s parties in NYC and Miami. We had many local television appearances and worked the downtown burlesque/cabaret scene. I have always dreamed of making the group a household name and finding a great blend of personalities, voices, looks and skills can be difficult. Being a Glamazon isn’t for everyone. The rehearsal and performance schedules can be demanding. Talent is very important, of course, but commitment and dedication make the strongest members. What was it like at your first few gigs? MERYL – I wasn't nervous to perform but rather anxious to see how people would receive the group. From the beginning, the audience’s reactions have exceeded my expectations! One of our first gigs was at the opening night party for Hairspray. I looked into the audience and Bette Midler was watching us with a big smile on her face! Performing in the group over the years, I always felt torn between being a member of the group and the leader. It was difficult for me to focus on what I was doing, while worrying about what the whole picture looked like. My injury has forced me to watch the shows from the outside over the past few months and I have never been happier! I am such a proud mamma watching my girls on stage! They are bright shining stars that the whole world needs to see! LAURA - With the first few gigs I had a rush of emotions. It was bananas! It was the first time I ever danced in panties and high boots. My parents came to my first show, which was at the NYC’s Gay Pride Parade stage and I thought “oh well this is who I am, I hope you enjoy it, because I’m having a blast.” The lashes, glitter, panties, the crowd, everything gave me such confidence that I looked forward to doing more and more shows. KATIE - My first performance as a Glamazon was on Broadway at the Shubert Theater. It was an amazing experience, getting to

strut our stuff at such a famous and beautiful venue. The response from the audience and the other acts in the show was so positive, it was unbelievable!

If so, how did you handle it? MERYL – In the entertainment industry, I have faced discrimination for being too big at a size 10, and being too small at a size 18. One of the reasons I started The Glamazons was because I was tired of auditioning to fit the mold of characters other people created. I wanted to make my own mold, and help other girls make theirs. LAURA - Yes I have faced discrimination because of my size. I have been big my whole life and grew up with the “fat girl” name calling in school and my neighborhood. It sucked because I was really talented but because I was teased so much, I became shy and I didn’t get to develop my talents with confidant gusto. I just thought “oh I’m fat so I can’t be this or do that, etc.” As a teenager I wasn’t very confident, but I loved to sing and dance. I don’t have any role models of plus-size woman who sang and danced and stood for I didn’t have any role models of plus-size woman who sang and danced and stood for glamour and sexiness. But something compelled me to just do it anyway. I also had really great friends in high school and a close friend introduced me to “City Kids,” a youth performing group where I sang and danced, and learned how to believe in myself…very slowly. I think it’s really important to learn to “discriminate discrimination.” Developing talents and skills, learning new things, and making friends is a right everyone deserves at any age, despite what society may have us think about what’s cool or not. It’s up to each of us to stand up for ourselves and help just one other person shine their own light as well. I hope I’m doing that as a Glamazon. MEGAN - Growing up, I was always the more voluptuous girl in my group of friends and held my own. One time a few of my girlfriends met some guys and they invited me out with them. While walking up to us, one of them said ”wow, who invited the fat chick”. At the time it hurt, ”but I felt sad in a way for them that they could be so small minded and childish to completely judge someone by there size. I pride myself on following the motto “never judge any book by its cover.” What are your favorite 3 venues/event you have performed at and why? MERYL –Oh my, just 3? Over the past ten years we have had so many incredible experiences! We performed in a small city called Cavour in Southern Italy at a festival called “Informissima: the International Big People’s Meeting”. The show was in a large stadium and then we led a parade across the town square and did an encore performance outdoors. We were treated like princesses and it all felt like a dream! When we were in the competition for “America’s Got Talent”, we sang on the stage at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. I would love to be back there with The Glamazons someday soon. The Shubert Theatre on Broadway was magical, but I also have to mention dancing on stage with Mika at his NYC concert. And, of course, a weeklong appearance in Key West where I met my biggest fan….my husband! LAURA - We’ve performed many places. I loved Rome, Italy where we performed in a Christmas music and fashion television special there. Italians love big women! America’s Got Talent was, of course, amazing. We were able to reach and hear from so many people who just needed role models. It was an experience I will never forget and always cherish. Also, the Shubert Theater on Broadway. It was just for one night but it was amazing to see those lights and the people. I met Sir Ian McKellen and he said “Hello Caramella.” I thought wow “It’s Magneto and Gandalf and he knows my name!!!” I lost it! Do you feel that you have developed a sisterhood with each other? MERYL: I love all the girls I have shared the stage with like my family. It’s very emotional for me because I have met wonderful friends throughout the years who have performed with the group. It’s hard to keep in touch with the girls who have left because we don’t see each other often but they all have a special place in my heart. It is also tough to work together and build friendships. There are times when we can have fun and joke around with each other, but when it's time to work everyone needs to reel that in and focus. At the end of the day, this is a business and everyone needs to be at the top of their game. MEGAN - Yes I definitely feel a sisterhood with my fellow Glamazons. I know that no matter what they except me for who I am, through hard times or when I feel helpless and vise versa. I will do anything to be that shoulder to lean on for my girls. I believe we definitely stand strong together. What is Sisterhood to you? MERYL: A Sisterhood can combine women from all walks of life to bond over a common goal. For The Glamazons, each girl has to leave their ego at the door and focus on what’s best for the group. Each individual brings something special and shines in their own way. It can be difficult to get rid of judgments and feelings of competition, but that’s what forms a Sisterhood for The Glamazons and makes the group dynamic work. KATIE - Sisterhood is when you and your girlfriends find a single pair of jeans that inexplicably fits all of you perfectly. ;) Just kidding! I think it means treating yourself and all women with R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Supporting one another with love and encouragement. It's hard being a woman!

We have launched a national sisterhood with women all over the country, what advice would you give them that may have difficulties within their sisterhoods? LAURA - For me, I think we must first recognize that we as woman are a sisterhood, and that this involves supporting each other through exchanging ideas and experiences about life. We also need to recognize that within this sisterhood we have differences ranging from socio-economic status to race/ culture/nationalities to religion to sexual orientations and beyond, and that may make it difficult for each of us to understand one another, but we are still sisters anyway. Me personally, I know I have to practice dialoguing better with people before things get too hectic. We cannot be afraid to speak up and to create a better understanding with each other, no matter what the issue is. SHANNA - I think the most important thing when it comes to sisterhood is knowing when to speak and knowing when to be quiet and listen. Women are unique in that they are strong, but at the same time emotional beings. Sometimes someone isn't ready to hear the answer and in those moments being a good sister means just listening without judgment. When the time comes, being a good sister is being strong enough to say the truth. Other than be an irreplaceable amazing member of this group, what else are you involved with? MERYL: The Glamazons have been my main focus creatively over the past 10 years. I am a licensed NY State English teacher with a Masters degree in Education from NYU and work as an on-set tutor for child actors in television and films as well. I am also a plus size model and actress when opportunities come up that don't take my focus off of The Glamazons. Are you married and do you have children? If so, how does your family feel about you being a Glamazon? MERYL: I got married on June 14, 2009 on the Style network's program "Whose Wedding is it Anyway?". My husband was a fan of The Glamazons before we met! He is extremely supportive of the group. We have no children yet, but we would love to start a family soon. What are your hopes for the next 2 years? MERYL: In the next two years, I would love to have a television show for The Glamazons. We came so close a few years ago when we were picked up for our own reality series on Oxygen, but dropped soon after when there was a new head of the network. I would also love to have The Glamazons headlining in a show in Las Vegas!

Where were you when you found out about the opportunity to join this group? SHANNA: A fellow plus size model friend of mine knew about The Glamazons and had heard they were looking for a new girl. She thought I would be great fit and luckily she was right. What were your first thoughts? SHANNA: I was totally into it. My only hesitation was the month long competition to get in. I wanted to be a Glamazon right then and didn't want to wait. Patience is a virtue I continually find myself lacking. What steps did you take next? SHANNA: I found Meryl on facebook and emailed her about auditioning. I couldn't be there on their audition day so they were nice enough to let me come audition a day early.

How has being in this group impacted your life? SHANNA: It's been a lot of work, but totally worth it. It's so wonderful to see what we are doing on stage affecting woman in such a positive way. I love hearing that we inspired someone whether it is with a career move or just having the guts to wear the outfit they wanted to. Other than be an irreplaceable amazing member of this group, what else are you involved with? SHANNA: Well, first and foremost, I'm a singer/songwriter. When I'm not on stage with The Glamazons, I am touring the southeast and Europe with my own music. I just released an album this past Nov. and have a blog and web show called "In Bed With Shanna Are you married and do you have children? SHANNA: No and no. If so, how does your family feel about you being a Glamazon? SHANNA: It took a little adjusting for my dad and three older brothers to be ok with the baby girl of the family dancing around in a bustier and panties. But they all are very proud of the work we are doing. What are your hopes for the next 2 years? SHANNA: I really hope The Glamazons can have their own TV show. That way we can let the world know that being a big girl doesn't mean you can't be sexy and beautiful. On the contrary, our curves make us sexy and beautiful. And the more girls that can look in the mirror and feel good about what they see, the better.

Where were you when you found out about the opportunity to join this group? MEGAN: I was actually at work when a previous Glamazon, “Candy Apple” and I got to talking and we immediately connected quickly as friends. She told me about The Glamazons and asked me if I would be interested in auditioning for their amazing group. I checked them out and fell madly in love with the group and their whole image and goal of showing the world that curvy girls can get up and shake what their mammas gave them, while singing from there heart and soul. What were your first thoughts? MEGAN: My first thoughts were, wow here’s a girl group that is so fierce and are putting it all out there showing all that they are amazingly gifted, beautiful, and so comfortable in their own skin. What steps did you take next? MEGAN “SUGAR CONES” ALLEN MEGAN: When I first auditioned for The Glamazons, I was a little intimidated. I wasn’t sure if I fit in, but after thinking it through I realized I wasn’t bold enough to take a stand and show off what I got. I shook that all off and just let my true self shine and now I’m can proudly say I’m a Glamazon! How has being in this group impacted your life? MEGAN: Since being in this group I have never felt more woman empowerment and self-confidence in my adult life. The feeling of knowing its ok that you don’t have to be a size 2 to be sexy is one of the most amazing feelings. Other than be an irreplaceable amazing member of this group, what else are you involved with? MEGAN: At the moment I don’t have any other projects in motion, but I do have many goals and ambitions to continue and follow through with. I feel with this newfound confidence I can follow through and live to the full potential I have. Are you married and do you have children? If so, how does your family feel about you being a Glamazon? MEGAN: No, I am not married but I have an amazing supportive boyfriend and I love him for that. My family thinks this a great opportunity and love and supports me with any decisions I make. What are your hopes for the next 2 years? MEGAN: In the next 2 years, I hope The Glamazons have become a household name and inspired women all over the world to be confident in their own skin, knowing they can do anything and be sexy no matter what size they are. I hope we are able to share our voices, headlining in our very own concert.

Where were you when you found out about the opportunity to join this group? KATIE: I was at the Wisconsin State Fair...random I know. I got an email from Meryl "Lady" Finger asking me if I wanted to audition. Creampuff in one hand, iPhone in the other, I accepted! What were your first thoughts? KATIE: At first I wasn't sure if I was ready to put "the goods" out there in bustiers and bloomers. But my family encouraged me to go for it. What steps did you take next? KATIE: I channeled Britney Spears, shook my ass and hair flipped my way into the Top 3 of the "America's Next Top Glamazon" weekly competition/audition/show. How has being in this group impacted your life?

KATIE “HONEY BUN� CASS

KATIE: I love having these beautiful, strong, talented women in my life. Their friendship means the world to me. The Glamazons have helped me learn a lot about myself as a woman and a performer. I am very grateful for that. Other than be an irreplaceable amazing member of this group, what else are you involved with? KATIE: I work at The Duplex, a piano bar in NYC, as part of the singing bar staff. I also work full time as an event coordinator on the Upper East Side. Are you married and do you have children? If so, how does your family feel about you being a Glamazon? KATIE: Not married. A note to my boyfriend..."If you like it then you better put a ring on it." ;) My family and friends think its pretty cool that I'm part of the Glamazons. They have always been supportive of my singing and performing, no matter what I'm up to. What are your hopes for the next 2 years? KATIE: THE NEXT TWO YEARS?!? I don't even know what my hopes are for dinner tonight! Haha. I just hope that whatever I'm doing, its fun and I'm happy.

Where were you when you found out about the opportunity to join this group? LAURA: I was modeling at a photo shoot for a book called “Big Girl Knits.” I met The Glamazons there who were also modeling for the book. I heard what they did and thought, “I need to do this!” But I told Meryl, “I can’t wear pasties, but I can sing and dance!” (I’m now rethinking wearing pasties. I think it would be lots of fun! *wink)

What were your first thoughts? LAURA: “Oh sh*t, my dad is going to kill me, but my mother will love this!” (They are both very supportive!). What steps did you take next? LAURA: I spoke to Meryl about what she needed in the group and what I was looking for and needed and we spent a month having me learn songs and choreography and performing at different venues. We clicked during our first rehearsal and the rest is history.

How has being in this group impacted your life? LAURA: Oh wow in so many ways, from feeling more confident in my body and myself to realizing being happy has to do with me being the best “me” not just looking some way. I know I am lucky to be surrounded by such talented, fun, loving and beautiful women. Sure we have “fat” days and bad days but we know how to focus that energy on becoming better people, not beating ourselves up. And…my closest selection has grown tremendously! It’s nice having friends with the same size feet and good fashion sense. I missed out on that exchange growing up being the only plus-size friend in my crew. I could never partake in borrowing clothes. But now it’s: “oh have this, oooh take that. This looks good on you. Oh I got this, but don’t really like it on me, but it looks great on you.” It’s so nice to share that with other women.

Other than being an irreplaceable amazing member of this group, what else are you involved with? LAURA: I have lots in the air. I am a plus-size model and really want to grow that career. Since I’m really comfortable with my body (after all this time) I really want to be a lingerie model. I like shopping and seeing women my size modeling the clothes in my size. We need to see more plus women reflected back at us in the media and fashion. On the flipside, I also teach at a preschool. I love working with kids. They give me hope, make me laugh, and teach me so much about life. The staff loves me. laugh, and teach me so much about life. The staff loves me. I’m so glad they are supportive. I do dance around in my panties after all.

Are you married and do you have children? If so, how does your family feel about you being a Glamazon? LAURA: No kids, but I want them soon. Caramella is single and ready to get hitched. I have enjoyed my single life. It was fun just doing me whenever I felt like it, but now I want to grow together with someone and create more life and a future.

What are your hopes for the next 2 years?

The Glamazons: Remembering Mia Meryl- Mia Amber Davis Yard was truly a remarkable woman, friend and pioneer for plus-size women. We were always in complete awe of her grace and calm energy that made everyone in her presence feel at ease. When Mia walked into a room, all eyes were on her. We felt giddy being around her. Her positivity was contagious. Mia always made us feel like everything was going to be alright, no matter how hard the obstacle in front of us was, personally or professionally. She was very supportive of The Glamazons and always ready to help in any way she could. We are devastated that she is gone and will miss her terribly. The Glamazons will continue to perform and help give plus size women a voice in her honor. Curvy Girls Rock! Laura- I have always been a fan of Mia and she always made me smile. She had such style and grace that her energy permeated every room she entered and every heart she encountered. I remember the first time I met Mia. It was at BET’s “Rip The Runway” fashion show, walking for plus designer “Monif C.” I thought Mia was gorgeous and glamorous. She was so kind and sweet. It was my very first runway show and I was so nervous. She gave me so many pointers and filled me with such confidence that all I could do was shine. It was a great and memorable time. Shortly after, I stumbled upon the movie “Road Trip” on TV, and saw the love scene with her character “Rhonda” and the skinny geek “Kyle.” I jumped up and down yelling, “I know her! That’s Mia!!!” I was so proud and happy for her. I called her immediately and was so excited to know her. She just laughed and said thank you. Mia was a huge fan and supporter of The Glamazons and loved our message of self-acceptance. She would help us out in any way she could. Be it tips for the stage and fashion, giving words of encouragement when at times continuing seemed so hard, or finding us a place to stay in Los Angeles when we were touring, to styling the Glamazons’ first album cover photo shoot. I will always remember her kind and sharing spirit, as that was just her nature. Whenever I was lost or discouraged she was always there with lots of real advice about the business. She would call me with modeling jobs and I remember her once sending me in for a modeling gig to fill in for her. We are about 5 inches apart in height and both a size 18, but I thought there was no way the fashion designer is going see that I could fill in for Mia (what an honor too I thought). But when I arrived, she said, “well if Mia sent you then you must be good.” People trusted Mia. That ended up being a great modeling job for me and I created such lasting friendships, just because she was that great of a person.

Mia taught me the importance of being professional and talented, kind and responsible. She was a teacher of the human heart through her actions and kindness. She stood up for what she believed in and did it with grace. Mia wanted every woman to be beautiful, to be their best, and to keep their head held high and make the best out of whatever time we have on this earth. We owe her this and our love. Pink City Sisterhood

Pink City Entertainment started out as a division of a company called Toyl Events which stands for "Time of Your Life". Toyl Events was a social event planning company founded by Bev Wilson in June 1999 in Michigan. The Company also operated out of Las Vegas for seven years before it finally moved to Atlanta in early 2006. Once Toyl Events moved to Atlanta, it started producing bridal shows and themed expos. This led to the creation of the Bachelorette Expo which debuted in September 2007. Because of the overwhelming response from the Bachelorette Expos, Toyl Events decided to close the social events department down and strictly focus on public events catered towards women. In 2009, Toyl Events changed it's name to Pink City Entertainment and started recruiting Faces of Pink City (FOPC) Models. Pink City Entertainment is becoming the driving force behind the country’s most exciting ladies night out event--the “For Who I Am” Bachelorette Expo. This expo has produced more than six successful shows in Atlanta and Las Vegas. It features sexy lingerie fashion shows, pole dance classes, spa and beauty services, shopping, leading novelties, accessories vendors, games, food, drinks, a male revue and much more. Pink City Entertainment is also the parent/sister company to the popular Project Curve Appeal Movement, which was also the brain child of Toyl Events in 2008. While promoting events with the local Faces of Curve Appeal (FOCA) team, the Faces of Pink City grew an extremely tight bond with the FOCA team, which ultimately lead to the creation of the Sisterhood. What sets Pink City Ent apart from Project Curve Appeal is that it caters to women of all sizes. Following in the footsteps of the Project Curve Appeal Movement, the Pink City Sisterhood has begun to spread beyond Atlanta and has started new chapters in a few cities that also have an active FOPC/Curve Appeal Chapter. The Pink City Ent Sisterhood has grown from a promotional Modeling team to a full blown sisterhood of women that have a mission to unite, empower, educate and entertain sexy, independent, sophisticated women of all ages and sizes all over the country! In 2011, Pink City officially launched the PinkCitySisterhood.org website and started accepting members and welcomed outside supporters to also join the sisterhood. The Sisterhoods parent company Pink City Entertainment continues to produce hot events that are uplifting, empowering, community focused, provide a networking atmosphere, and exposure opportunities—while also offering fun, excitement and entertainment. In addition to events, Pink city Ent also offers design and marketing services through its affiliate company, Digime Marketing.

What is the Bachelorette Expo? One of the edgiest entertainment companies in the country, Pink City Entertainment, continues to push the envelope even further by hosting the most exciting and sometimes jaw dropping ladies nights events in the country. Pink City is famous for taking risks and setting new trends when it comes to hosting exciting themed events. The Company’s most popular event is the Bachelorette Expo event series, which mainly features Accessories in the City. However, this year Pink city is adding a refreshing twist to each Bachelorette Expo by attaching a different theme to each show. Since its start in 2007, more than 2,000 women have attended the Bachelorette Expos and events. The series is creating a major buzz that can't be ignored. The largest Bachelorette Expo of the year will take place on the weekend of the National Sisterhood Conference. The 2010 show debuted on Friday September 30 at the Holiday Inn Atlanta Capitol Conference Center in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The 2011 National show will take place during the Sisterhood Conference at the Hilton in downtown Miami on the weekend of September 21. “ We wanted to create a unique event that was geared toward women. It needed to be an event that offers a little bit of everything women love to do with their girlfriends and sisters; shopping for hot must have “exclusive” accessories, lingerie, toys, eating, drinking delicious girly mixed drinks, enjoying good music, dancing and enjoying live entertainment. We struggled with the decision on whether or not to make this event an event for bridal parties or open it up to the public. We ultimately decided that this event needs to be experienced by any group of ladies looking for a night of fun and excitement. We welcome all ladies over 18. What started out as the Curve Appeal Beauty, Fashion & Health Convention for the last 3 years, is now known as the Pink City Sisterhood Conference. The 4th Annual Conference will take place at Holiday Inn Atlanta Capitol Conference Center in Atlanta, Georgia September 30th October 2nd. The Pink City Sisterhood Conference is an event produced by Pink City Entertainment, The New Pink City Sisterhood Alliance and Project Curve Appeal. This conference is designed for women groups, clubs and organizations uniting for the ultimate experience, networking opportunities, shopping, fashion, women empowerment, health coaching, entertainment, speakers, makeovers, work from home opportunities, rejuvenation and allows women to meet those from a variety of other organizations to establish new connections. Exposing PCOS

What is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)? Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common hormonal diseases affecting reproductive-aged women. In actuality, PCOS includes a spectrum of disorders rather than a single, discrete disease. Women may experience a variety of signs and symptoms, and, as a result, some women may be inappropriately diagnosed with PCOS. Perhaps, more importantly, in many women the diagnosis is completely missed or even ignored. One problematic aspect of PCOS is that there is no universally accepted definition for this disease. Most reproductive endocrinologists, however, require the presence of hyperandrogenism (excessive "male" hormones) and chronic anovulation (infrequent or absent ovulation resulting in irregular menstrual cycles) to make the diagnosis. Others require the appearance of multiple small ovarian cysts on a vaginal ultrasound examination. Because other disorders of the ovary, pituitary gland and adrenal gland can mimic the symptoms and appearance of PCOS, these disorders should be excluded before an accurate diagnosis of PCOS can be made.

What are the symptoms of PCOS? The symptoms of PCOS may include irregular menstrual cycles (long intervals between periods), obesity (found in only half of patients), acne, excessive coarse hair growth, and infertility. Much of the hair growth many women, and sometimes their physicians, consider "abnormal" is not truly the result of excessive male hormones. Hairy arms and legs are not usually the result of abnormal hormone patterns, but rather reflect the woman’s family or ethnic background. "Midline" hair growth (e.g. upper lip, chin, abdomen, between the breasts and/or buttocks) is more suspicious for PCOS.

Some women with PCOS also have metabolic disturbances characterized by resistance to the hormone insulin. This hormone, produced in the pancreas, stimulates the cells of the body to absorb and utilize glucose, a sugar used by the body as a source of energy. In women with PCOS, the cells of the body are often resistant to insulin action and glucose is not utilized efficiently. It is therefore stored for later use in the form of fat, hence the increased obesity and abnormal glucose levels in some women with PCOS. Interestingly, even some thin women with PCOS exhibit insulin resistance. It is important for women with PCOS to realize that excessive fat tissue, insulin resistance and other hormonal aberrations put them at higher risk for coronary artery disease and diabetes. Furthermore, loss of ovulation and infrequent periods increase their risk for cancer of the uterus. Therefore, PCOS is a potentially serious disease and must not be ignored by women or their physicians. How is PCOS diagnosed? While many physicians empirically diagnose a woman with PCOS based on the clinical features mentioned above, proper diagnosis requires obtaining blood samples for a variety of hormones, including those produced by the ovaries, adrenal glands, pituitary gland and thyroid gland. A full physical examination and vaginal ultrasound are also important. Cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose and insulin screening should also be part of a complete evaluation. What causes PCOS? The truth is, no one really knows what causes this disease. There is certainly a miscommunication between the hypothalamus (within the brain), pituitary gland (at the base of the brain), ovary and fatty tissue. Where the miscommunication

So I have PCOS; what can I do about it? The treatment of PCOS depends primarily on the symptoms exhibited by the patient and whether or not the patient desires to become pregnant.

Anovulation and irregular menstrual cycles: For women who are not presently interested in childbearing, oral contraceptive (birth control) pills are very effective at providing regular cycles, reducing undesired "male" hormone levels and minimizing the risks of uterine cancer. Progesterone, a hormone produced by the ovaries of ovulatory women, can be used to induce regular cycles.

Those women who desire fertility can be placed on Clomiphene Citrate therapy for 3-4 months. Use of this medication for more than 3 or 4 months is unlikely to result in pregnancy and may waste valuable time. Furthermore, women over age 35 may have a lower response to Clomiphene Citrate and should consider the use of injectable fertility medications in order to more effectively induce ovulation. Hirsutism (excess hair growth): Besides oral contraceptive pills, other medications are commercially available for the treatment of hirsutism. The most common of these are Spironolactone and Finasteride. They are effective at preventing new hair growth but do not rid the body of existing hair. Therefore, they should be used in conjunction with mechanical hair removal methods such as electrolysis. Also, the effects of these medications on developing fetuses are not well-established and therefore, women should use contraceptive measures while taking these medications. Obesity: As in other obese women, treatment is based on the restriction of calorie intake and an increase in the performance of aerobic exercise. Women should consult with a nutritionist to create a diet that is low in fat and carbohydrates and provides adequate protein. Low-impact exercise programs (for 30 minutes per day 4-5 times per week) are optimal. Weight-lifting may also be helpful as increased muscle mass increases calorie consumption. Insulin resistance and glucose abnormalities: Weight reduction will greatly improve not only insulin resistance, but also help regulate menstrual cycles, improve fertility and reduce male hormone levels. In addition, weight loss will lower the risks of coronary artery disease and uterine cancer. Recently, two medications, Metformin and Troglitazone, have been shown to effectively improve insulin sensitivity in women with PCOS and help regulate menstrual cycles. They can be considered as an adjunct to weight loss and exercise in some patients.
