Welcome After the long winter and bitterly cold spring, it’s a great pleasure to welcome the warmer days and present our Summer season to you all. This year Curve celebrates its 10th Birthday. It’s been a remarkable decade and we are deeply proud to run this incredible building. Alongside a packed programme of work, there are various events across this historic year to mark our tenth year in the Cultural Quarter. Keep an eye on our social media channels and website for details of our upcoming Gala, Curve Live and other Birthday events across 2018. Curve wouldn’t be the success it is today without three vital ingredients – extraordinary artists who come to Leicester to make the work; you (our tremendously loyal audiences) and our fabulous staff – Team Curve. As the ultimate celebration of community spirit and resilience, we are thrilled to be presenting Fiddler on the Roof, our Curve Young Company and Community production this year. Directed by Sarah Ingram, this is one of the greatest examples of the traditional Broadway book musical, with songs that are ingrained in our cultural conscious. Sarah may be familiar to you through her work as an actor and notably, as the Grand High Witch in our production of Roald Dahl’s The Witches (let’s hope the young people behave!). We are thrilled Sarah is leading this epic production, working with our youth theatre, community groups and local actors, truly celebrating the ethos of Curve. Alongside Sarah, our Head of Learning Melanie Knott will recreate Jerome Robbins’ iconic and ground-breaking choreography. We welcome Curve Associate Artist Akram Khan back to LE1. Akram is one of the foremost choreographers and artists of his generation and we are delighted to be co-producing his latest production, Xenos. This marks Akram’s final performance as a dancer and promises to be a profound and earth-shattering swan song. As the only venue in England outside of London to be presenting the piece, Xenos is certainly not to be missed if you enjoy contemporary dance. Another incredible dance piece not to be missed is Matthew Bourne’s award-winning Swan Lake, which will return to Curve this October. This autumn we will produce the world premiere of Riaz Khan’s Memoirs of an Asian Football Casual. A Made at Curve production based on Riaz’s recollection of his days as a football hooligan in Leicester’s notorious Baby Squad, the gang that crossed racial divides and created an unexpected utopia in a fastchanging city. Curve Associate Artist Dougal Irvine has adapted this incredible slice of Leicester life for our stage. Filled with heart and humour, join us as we transform our Studio Theatre into the Filbert Street terraces, creating something truly immersive. In addition, we are pleased to be presenting some of the best touring drama including Sherlock Holmes: The Final Curtain, a new play based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic character, Agatha Christie’s Love From a Stranger, and as the Great War centenary remembrances draw to a close, we are proud to present The Wipers Times, which celebrates the determination of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity. We are delighted to be bringing the very best musical theatre to Leicester. Cameron Mackintosh has once again chosen our theatre to open the brand new UK tour of the incredible Les Misérables. We are also really pleased to be presenting the timeless Crazy for You and for a more contemporary musical, Cilla – The Musical, celebrating the life of one of the great television icons of the 20th century and featuring a stunning performance by Kara Lily Hayworth at its centre. But before that, enjoy the warmer days, great theatre and activities here at Curve including family days, relaxed and dementia friendly performances. Thank you very much for your continued support and making our theatre what it is today. Chris Stafford Chief Executive Nikolai Foster Artistic Director

WED 16 – SAT 19 MAY • STUDIO Following the BAFTA award-winning BBC series, DryWrite and Soho Theatre bring you the acclaimed stage production of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s cult hit. Fleabag may seem over-sexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig themed café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose. Stumbling through a maze of social anxiety, disastrous job interviews and meaningless sex, Fleabag serves up an uproariously funny and true account of some sort of a female living her sort of life.

FRI 10 – SUN 19 AUG • THEATRE This summer, the Curve Young Company and Community team bring Joseph Stein’s life-affirming musical Fiddler on the Roof to the stage. Meet Tevye the milkman, his long-suffering wife and five strong-minded daughters living in the small village of Anatevka, Russia. In a rapidly changing world on the brink of revolution, this tight-knit, tradition-steeped Jewish community live in a delicately balanced society where time-honoured traditional values are challenged by the changing social views and growing anti-semitism of Czarist Russia. Directed by Sarah Ingram (Curve’s Oklahoma!, 2017), Jerome Robbins’ iconic original choreography reproduced by Curve’s Head of Learning Melanie Knott and featuring a company of over 100 local people, Fiddler on the Roof contains some of the most memorable songs in musical theatre history, including Tradition, Matchmaker and the unforgettable If I Were A Rich Man. Executive Producer and Cilla’s son, Robert Willis, said of Kara: ‘I knew she was the one my mum would have wanted!’ For full terms and conditions, and information about ticket discounts please visit curveonline.co.uk

A New Adventures Production

‘AS BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL AS EVER’ DAILY TELEGRAPH

TUE 2 – SAT 6 OCT • THEATRE Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake returns with a fresh look for the 21st century. Retaining the iconic elements of the original production loved by millions around the world, Matthew Bourne and award-winning designers Lez Brotherston (Set & Costumes) and Paule Constable (Lighting) will create an exciting re-imagining of the classic production. Thrilling, audacious, witty and emotive, this Swan Lake is perhaps still best known for replacing the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble, which shattered conventions, turned tradition upside down and took the dance world by storm. Collecting over thirty international accolades including an Olivier Award in the UK and three Tonys on Broadway, Matthew Bourne’s powerful interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece is a passionate and contemporary Swan Lake for our times. THU 6 DEC - SUN 13 JAN • THEATRE As part of our 10th Birthday celebrations this year, join us at Christmas for the joyous festive favourite, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. Following the huge success of Scrooge The Musical last year, Artistic Director Nikolai Foster reunites with twotime Olivier award-winning choreographer Stephen Mear (Scrooge The Musical, Mary Poppins) to bring Irving Berlin’s timeless musical to Leicester. Based on the 1954 American musical film starring Bing Crosby, White Christmas follows ex-army friends Bob Wallace and Phil Davis as they team up with two sisters, Betty and Judy Haynes and put on a show to save their former general’s remote Vermont ski lodge when it falls on hard times. Irving Berlin’s beloved Broadway sensation is an enduring tale of friendship, camaraderie, hope and the pursuit of happiness, told through spectacular dance routines and some of the most memorable hits from the Great American Songbook. This Made at Curve musical features a dazzling, instantly recognisable score including Blue Skies, Sisters, How Deep Is The Ocean and arguably the most famous Christmas song of them all, White Christmas.

PERFORMANCE TIMES 12pm, 2.15pm, 4pm, 5pm, 7pm & 7.30pm Please note that the above performance times vary each week. For a list of performance times, please see the Diary on pages 42-43 or visit our website at www.curveonline.co.uk
