“Spring is bustin’ out all over” and our new season at Curve is bursting with new productions. There is still time for you to see our highly anticipated festive productions of Leslie Bricusse’s great British musical Scrooge and Roald Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Medicine. We are proud to present these productions, which celebrate two magnificent British writers who have contributed massively to children’s literature and entertainment, inspiring many generations. Coincidentally, in addition to his beautiful adaptation of Dickens’ seminal work, Leslie is responsible for the music and lyrics to the iconic 1970s film adaptation of Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The Dahl theme continues later in to the season, when we are thrilled to welcome the Royal Shakespeare Company with Matthew Warchus’ multi award-winning production of Dahl’s Matilda, adapted by Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin. Moving across the Atlantic, we turn our attention to American culture later in this Made at Curve season. An Officer and a Gentleman was one of the great surprise hits of the 1980s, where beneath the Hollywood glitz, lurked edgy and popular low-budget movies, which were a smash with audiences. Officer perfectly captures a slice of gritty, working class American lives and history. Written by Douglas Day Stewart, the film follows the lives of men and women living and working around the Pensacola Naval Air Base in Florida. We started working on Officer about two years ago, and last summer presented a workshop here in Leicester, when we decided to green light the production. We have woven 80s pop hits through Douglas’ original film script; songs like Alone, Material Girl and of course Up Where We Belong, capturing the spirit and grit of the era and giving a musical voice to the well-loved film characters. We are proud to be presenting this world premiere here at Curve and after Leicester, the production tours the UK, produced by our terrific partners Jamie Wilson Productions. Our co-production with De Montfort University has grown in ambition each year, with directors finding innovative ways in which to stage productions in our Studio theatre. Local director Siobhán CannonBrownlie will direct arguably Arthur Miller’s greatest play The Crucible, which principally considers religious intolerance, censorship and how we ostracise groups within society who are deemed different and dangerous to the state. This play couldn’t feel more timely or relevant. Alongside our Made at Curve slate of productions, we continue to present a rich programme of visiting work across all genres; from Agatha Christie’s Love from a Stranger, English Touring Opera’s The Marriage of Figaro and Northern Ballet’s The Little Mermaid through to Josette Bushell-Mingo’s stunning production of Nina, the critically acclaimed Crazy for You and the return of Trainspotting Live following the recent sold out run. We are also delighted to welcome some of the nation’s best comedians to Curve for the annual Leicester Comedy Festival – Harry Hill, Sara Pascoe and Griff Rhys Jones are just a few of the names you will see in LE1 next February. We truly believe there is something for everyone at Curve in the season ahead. And if you’re not already a Curve member, please do consider joining up. Our brilliant army of members has steadily grown over the past few years and enjoy a range of benefits including priority access to tickets, discounts and invitations to special events. Finally, 2018 is a special year for everyone at Curve as we turn 10 years old; keep an eye out for some exciting announcements and events as we say a very big thank you to everyone who’s supported us and helped make Curve the place it is today. SAT 18 NOV – SUN 7 JAN • THEATRE This Christmas, Curve Artistic Director Nikolai Foster directs a magical new Made at Curve production of Scrooge – The Musical. Based on Charles Dickens’ much-loved A Christmas Carol, Scrooge is the perfect festive family treat, taking you and Ebenezer on a spellbinding journey through Christmas past, present and yet-to-come. Will the miserable Scrooge cancel Christmas? Bah Humbug! Or can he learn the error of his ways and let a little festive cheer shine in his otherwise dreary world? Meet the miserly Ebenezer, the Cratchit family and a host of Dickens’ most famous characters in this heart-warming story, with a fantastic score that includes the Oscar-nominated hit Thank You Very Much, I Hate Christmas, Happiness and many more. This spectacular musical is a wonderful, feel-good story about hope and the kind of happiness that money can’t buy, so join us as we celebrate the season of goodwill to all, even Scrooge. DRAMA

A CURVE & DE MONTFORT UNIVERSITY CO-PRODUCTION

DIRECTED BY SIOBHÁN CANNON-BROWNLIE THU 3 – SAT 5 MAY • STUDIO Winner of the 2007 Olivier Award for Best Revival, Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a thrilling window on the Salem witch hunts of 1692, where superstition and repression are exploited for emotional and political gain. This post-truth play holds particular significance in the current political environment, with division and exclusion recurring themes in both Miller’s work and in today’s wider world. What is truth? A political tool, a vehicle for fear, a weapon used in an ideological war, a trial by jury or trial by rumour, a scapegoat, paranoia, fake news... sound familiar? The Crucible is an interpretation of the brutal McCarthyism of American politics in the 1950s, the art of making accusations without proper regard for the evidence. Where suspicion and personal grievance turned friend into enemy, neighbour against neighbour and shows the terrifying fragility of truth when faced with mis-information, hysteria and false accusation. Regarded as a central work in the library of American drama, this gripping new production is performed by a talented company of drama and performing arts students from De Montfort University. This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd. *Transaction fee is £3 for all card payments. Excludes Members, Groups 10+ and e-tickets. MOZART: THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO

PUCCINI: IL TABARRO & GIANNI SCHICCHI

TUE 29 MAY • THEATRE

WED 30 MAY • THEATRE

English Touring Opera presents an energetic new production of one of the world’s most beloved operas, Mozart’s classic comedy The Marriage of Figaro. During the course of one eventful day, Figaro and Susanna must overcome every obstacle put in their way by Count Almaviva and his cronies before they can finally be united as man and wife. Blanche McIntyre (Tosca, 2017) returns to direct this most warm-hearted of operas, equally acclaimed for its sublime music and huge sense of fun. Sung in English with surtitles.

Puccini’s one-act operas Il Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi could hardly be more different: one is a moody romance ending in a grotesque murder on a barge in Paris, and the other is a sparkling comedy about a family inheritance in Florence. First performed in 2011 to great critical acclaim, this double bill shows Puccini at his finest as a master of the theatre that speaks to the heart. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
