WELCOME ...to the new season here at Curve. There is lots of uncertainty in the world at the moment and one of the great things theatre can do is bring us all together, celebrating our differences, offering new perspectives, sometimes challenging the status quo and an escape from it all. We have lots coming up in this season to amuse, challenge and inspire. Joe Orton was born in Leicester and went on to become one of the most important playwrights of the mid-20th century. Through his black comedies, wit and unique perspectives on the world, he created an extraordinary body of work, which electrified audiences. We are hugely excited to present What The Butler Saw and welcome Rufus Hound back to Curve, in the role of Dr Prentice, after he opened the national tour of One Man, Two Guvnors with us. Later this season, we are proud to present the world premiere of Ravi Shankar's only opera, Sukanya. Shankar was responsible for introducing Indian music to the West and was undoubtedly a genius, who changed the cultural landscape, uniting cultures and crossing continents. Our Associate Director Suba Das and Associate Artist Aakash Odedra are working with the Royal Opera House and London Philharmonic Orchestra to realise Shankar's beautiful vision. We continue our association with Cameron Mackintosh and are thrilled to present the brand new production of Miss Saigon, which opens here before embarking on a major UK tour. These are just three highlights in this action packed season, and we look forward to welcoming you to Curve very soon. It's been an incredibly productive past few months here in LE1, with more UK tours setting sail from our city than ever before, our very first production in London's West End and the volume of Made At Curve work increasingly significantly. As ever, we would like to thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for all that we do here at Curve; we couldn't do any of this without our wonderful audiences.

Now celebrating over 25 terrifying years in the West End, Robin Herford’s gripping production is a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror. A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a Woman in Black, engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. In a better-late-than-never nod to the Bard’s 400th anniversary, the bad boys of abridgement present this ‘new’ play by the man himself, as discovered in a Leicester car park! The show, mercifully abridged by the RSC from its full hundred hour running time to a more palatable ninety minutes, embarks on its debut UK tour following world premiere seasons at the renowned Folger Shakespeare Library and the Edinburgh Fringe.

First presented by Lewenstein-Delfont Productions Ltd. and H.M. Tennent Ltd. at the Queen’s Theatre, London, on 5th March 1969.
50 years since the death of celebrated Leicester playwright Joe Orton, Artistic Director Nikolai Foster brings What The Butler Saw to the stage in a Made At Curve production of the classic comedy. Joe Orton’s audacious farce was his final play, completed just a month before his untimely death. Orton’s comic masterpiece combines dialogue akin to Oscar Wilde’s witticisms with the craftsmanship of a French farce, and pokes fun at sex, authority and family relationships, spiked with Orton’s trademark cynical dark humour. Comedian and actor Rufus Hound (One Man, Two Guvnors, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Sancho Panza in the RSC production of Don Quixote) plays sex-obsessed psychiatrist Dr Prentice, who attempts to seduce his prospective secretary in a hilarious, innuendo-fuelled interview. Dakota Blue Richards (Stella in Curve’s Streetcar Named Desire, Endeavour, The Golden Compass) returns to play Geraldine, the naïve target of his advances. But when Dr Prentice’s carnally-crazed wife calls in unexpectedly, his clinic becomes a hotbed of heightened sexual tension and mistaken identity. Join us for an evening of door-slamming, crossdressing, trousers-down, anti-establishment, illicitly pleasurable comedy, intricately woven together in this ludicrously funny and subversive play.

BASED ON THE NOVEL BY MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT SHELLEY ADAPTED BY SELMA DIMITRIJEVIC DIRECTED BY LORNE CAMPBELL
MON 27 MAR – SAT 1 APR • STUDIO Victoria Frankenstein is a brilliant, visionary young woman born into a world not ready for her. The industrial revolution is dawning and the British Empire circles the globe. It’s an age of enlightenment, a time when old orders begin to crumble and everything seems possible. Provided of course, that you are an English-man. Women are not allowed to study medicine in England, so Victoria travels to Ingolstadt, Bavaria to fulfil her destiny and become Dr Frankenstein. Convinced that there is no magic, no god, only undiscovered science, Victoria’s experiments lead her to the very brink of human knowledge: the secret of life itself.
In the dark of night, a creature is given life. There is violence, there is anger, there is fear. There will be consequences. This psychologically disturbing new version of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s Frankenstein tells a truly great story of power and powerlessness, of fear and revenge; of the creative possibility and terrible destructive power of the human animal. SILVER ELECTRA It’s 1937. Amelia Earhart, the most famous woman on the planet has gone missing in her silver Electra aeroplane just as she was approaching the final leg of her round the world flight. 40 years later and 2,000 miles away in Australia, an old jar of freckle cream is discovered by an elderly woman on the beach. Could it offer a clue to the disappearance of Amelia? Created for children aged 9 – 14 years and their families, Silver Electra is an exciting new opera that looks both at the riveting story of Earhart herself, and the role of women pioneers in the twentieth century.
